Local Stanground football news Power League Colts As the festive break approaches, so does the adverse weather. Managers, players, parents and league officials break out the thermal underwear and collectively cross their fingers hoping the snow and ice stays away for a couple of weeks more. Last season, around this time, many games became casualties of the bad weather. Not only does it mean we have little or no football for an extended period, it also leads to a backlog of fixtures that become a struggle to fit in around April/May time. With 13 teams to run this can be a massive headache for us here at powerleague colts. With the colder weather over the next 3 months or so, we also need to be aware of our responsibility as a charter standard club. Our young footballers need to be well wrapped up when attending matches. Over the years we’ve all seen a 9 year old standing on the sidelines as a substitute waiting to go on, wearing nothing but a football kit, and a flimsy, thin training bib. While we endeavour to provide as much kit as we can for our players it’s an expensive operation. We need the help of local businesses to come forward as sponsors. Just recently TK PACKAGING did just that, providing us with the money to buy some bench jackets for one of our teams. Our thanks to them are immeasurable. With 13 teams though we really need more, so if you can help please get in touch through our website: www.powerleaguecolts.co.uk. 6 Stanground Jan.indd 6

Claudio Cozzetto - Branch Manager An experienced estate agent who has been in the property industry for over 20 years and has seen every market come and go throughout the years. As Branch manager of our independent estate and lettings agent I believe that the most important aspect of looking after our clients whether it is our vendors or our buyers is honesty and integrity which I strive to train in to the staff and show them the way forward.
Adam Paull - Partner Adam has been a successful valuer for the past 6 years and has been always strived to be as honest with his valuations and advice and over the many years vendors as well as buyers and investors have turned to him for advice and recommendations. Having recently been made partner of Paull & Rose I am immensely proud to serve our clientele and hope throughout the many years forward to be a good, trustworthy and successful agent.
Having recently joined the estate agent industry Robert has learnt a lot from his peers and an intense training programme and feels that he is the right man for the job. Robert has learnt a lot and the feedback we get from Vendors is that they feel that they are always involved from start to finish and his honesty is very refreshing says Claudio the manager.

Church
Stanground Church
As this new January begins I find myself looking back on an amazing first year as Vicar of Stanground.
I have discovered that many of you are really proud of St John’s Church - your church. It is a truly beautiful building, a treasure passed down through the generations for us to enjoy. We are very aware that it is usually locked and we know many of you would like to go in to enjoy its beauty and find peace in the stillness so this year we want to explore ways to open it up during the week. We can’t promise anything because of security and safety issues, but If you have any suggestions we would love to hear them. You can contact me via the church website: www. stangroundcofechurches.net or send me an email. It has also been wonderful discovering the depth of community here with so many generational families with parents, grandparents and great grandparents. I have loved meeting so many of you and learning your stories I have laughed with some of you, cried with some and prayed with others. Most exciting of all I have watched people make new steps of faith and discover the love of God as he reaches out to us through Jesus. Later this month we begin a series of sessions called ‘Alpha’ in which people can explore the spirituality of the Christian Faith. Details are on our website if you are interested. Or perhaps you’d just like to take a look in to say ‘hello’ on a Sunday morning. It’s 9.30 at St John’s in Church Street, and 11.15 at St Michael’s in Mace Road and you are all invited!

January Bulletin Stanground Fire and Rescue HAPPY New Year! And why not make a New Year’s resolution to help keep you and your family fire safe this year. Firefighters at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service are encouraging people to make three New Year’s Resolutions in 2014 – and stick to them! •
Make sure you have a correctly fitted working smoke alarm on every floor of your house and test it weekly. Check older relatives and friends have a working smoke alarm and test theirs regularly. Make a fire plan so you and your family know what to do in case a fire breaks out in the home.
• •

Partners are welcome to come along with the mothers too. It is trained staff that runs the meetings, health professionals who are able to give parents the right information and advice. The Baby Café drop-ins offer help with all aspects of breastfeeding and its impact on everyday life. During the meetings, as well as one-to-one chats with the professionals, you can talk to other mothers and build your confidence. You can also look through books, various leaflets or watch DVDs while enjoying some tasty refreshments. The atmosphere is very relaxed, friendly, informal and safe. Delicious
gluten-free recipes to tickle everyone’s taste buds! Can you taste the difference? In recent years supermarkets have recognised the demand for gluten-free alternatives, and the majority now carry their own ‘free-from’ ranges. However, whilst undoubtedly representing choice for the consumer, these vacuum-packed products are often a poor substitute for homebaking (despite their hefty price tag!). It’s therefore well worth making your own: not only is gluten-free flour as easy to use as wheatflour, you tell the difference between the end results!
250g butter, melted then cooled for 5 mins 300g caster sugar 3 eggs 200g Dove’s Farm Gluten-Free Self-Raising Flour 50g cocoa powder 100g chocolate drops Topping: 85g butter 85g caster sugar 200g light condensed milk 50g chocolate drops (plus some for decoration)
•
3 lightly hardboiled eggs 6 gluten-free sausages (e.g. ‘Black Farmer’ or ‘Debbie & Andrew’s Harrogate Sausages’) 2-3 tsp dried sage Gluten-free breadcrumbs (simply blitz gluten-free bread in a food processor) • • • • •
Chocolate Fudge Traybake
• • • • •
Baked Scotch Eggs
•
Basic Shortcrust Pastry This pastry is easy to work with, although it tends to stay quite pale: if you prefer more colour, brush with a little beaten egg prior to baking. 200g Dove’s Farm Gluten-Free Plain Flour 100g block margarine 1 egg, beaten 1-2 tsp water •
Preheat oven to Gas 4/180°/160° Fan Grease and line a 20 x 30cm tin Beat together eggs, sugar and melted butter until smooth. Fold in the sifted flour, cocoa and a pinch of salt. Fold in the chocolate drops and bake for 35 minutes. Cool on a rack. For the topping, melt the additional sugar and butter, stir in the condensed milk and bring to the boil. Cool for 5 minutes before stirring in the chocolate drops and spreading over the cake. Facebook “f ” Logo

Use a food processor to blitz the flour and diced margarine to the breadcrumb stage. Add the beaten egg and 1 teaspoon water; process briefly until it forms a dough. If it needs another teaspoon of water to bind, add that and process again. Turn onto a floured surface (gluten-free!) and knead lightly. Wrap in clingfilm and leave to rest for about 20 minutes before using in quiches, tarts, pies, etc. For a sweet pastry, sift a little icing sugar in with the flour.

Pre-heat the oven to Gas 7/220°/200° Fan Remove sausage skins. Place the sausagemeat in a bowl with the sage, a little salt and black pepper; mix with your hands until thoroughly combined. Divide into three equal portions and roll into balls. Flatten each ball into a patty and wrap around an egg, ensuring no gaps. Dip into beaten egg before rolling in gluten-free breadcrumbs (you can omit the beaten egg, but the breadcrumbs may not stick so well). Bake on a non-stick tray for about 20-30 minutes until piping hot and golden brown. Turn every so often to ensure they’re evenly cooked. Cool on a rack, and refrigerate as soon as possible.

Falls and fracture rehabilitation by If you have had falls, feel you are at risk of falls or are recovering from a hip fracture following a fall, Falls Assist can help you. Falls Assist UK is an independent healthcare firm formed by a network of healthcare professionals specialising in falls and hip fracture rehabilitation in the community setting. Established in 2011 and a member of the Falls and Fracture Alliance in England, Falls Assist UK provides comprehensive rehabilitation services to the elderly in the community as well as residential homes and at local clinics in Peterborough and surrounding villages and towns. Falls Assist UK accepts referrals from not only GPs and other healthcare professionals but also directly from patients and their relatives who would prefer early intervention after a fall or as soon as someone is identified at risk of falls. Many of our referrals come from relatives of active individuals that have started to limit their activities due to a fall or a near miss or have been discharged from hospital following hip fractures. Clients are visited by a qualified health professional at their own homes or at a clinic* and following a comprehensive and detailed multifactorial assessment are offered intervention including individualized exercise and balance training programs, environmental safety modifications, functional assessments, interactive patient and
Is the fear of falling stopping you from leading an active life? It is estimated that about one in three people over the age of 65 will fall each year. Although not an inevitable consequence of old age, falls can have devastating effects resulting in fractures, loss of confidence, depression, social isolation, reduced mobility and independence. If you have had a fall (or feel you may be at risk) or are recovering from a hip fracture , Falls Assist’s Comprehensive Falls and Hip Fracture Rehabilitation can help you regain your independence and live a more active life.
family education, behaviour modification and goal setting. Clients can also receive eye tests from a qualified optician at home and the intervention and outcomes are feedback to the GP regularly. Clients are also provided with the necessary equipment to maximize their independence for as long as possible. The rehabilitation program is built around the client with the client taking ownership of the program from day one. Our staffs are qualified health professionals registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and are CRB checked. Falls Assist UK also often works as a signpost to other relevant services in the community and takes an active role in educating older people on preventing falls. *Subject to availability and prior arrangement. Delicious food at 2 for 1 prices! Set at the forefront of Cardea, The Apple Cart is a perfect family friendly restaurant for anyone living in the Stanground area. Stepping in to the restaurant, Elle and I knew were a bit sceptical, as it looked to us like it was just a pub, but we were greatly surprised. We were taken to a table by the very welcoming manager Kate and were served by the friendly Dee, who couldn’t have been more helpful for us. Before we knew it, it had come to choosing our meal; The waitress was very informative in telling me and Elle that all of the meals were on 2 for 1 (YES ALL!) and pointed us to look at the specials board. Elle and I went for something different off the specials board, she had the chicken and garlic mushroom and I had the mighty BBQ chicken and both were absolutely perfectly cooked.
After the delights of the main course, Elle couldn’t manage to fit in a desert, but that didn’t stop me – I wanted more of the chef’s delights – so I decided to try the Melt in the Middle Chocolate Pudding, which was recommended to me by Dee. WOW! As it came out it looked perfect, poured with custard and chocolate streaming out as I tucked into it. For a family friendly pub – with quiet zones for those who don’t want to sit with families – The Apple Cart is highly recommendable for it’s quality food and quality service.

The food came out piping hot, the chicken was succulent and tender, and for me, the BBQ sauce just added the extra flavour with the melted cheese and the smoked bacon – top commendations for the chef!

Question:
if you fancy both a curry and a cocktail, what do you do? Answer: You visit Bollywood Tiger in Yaxley, situated on Main Street. It was a busy Friday night when we visited. The decor is stylish and modern and the staff friendly and welcoming. We entered the stylish cocktail bar and were very surprised at how trendy and vibrant it was. We were seated almost immediately in the restaurant area and the drinks order was taken. The menu is an excellent mix of the curries we know and love and a selection of more authentic Indian cuisine. To start we shared a pancake of lentils, cheese and potato, unusual but tasty and of course not forgetting the popperdoms with a great range of dips. The waiter was keen to recommend mains and he certainly knew his stuff. The Goan curry was delicious, the Jalfrezi quite possibly the nicest we’ve ever tasted. For dessert we had cocktails: ‘kiss on the lips’ and ‘mai tai’, the perfect follow up to any meal. We can’t wait for a return visit!

Pets
Did you get a
new pet
for Christmas?
Pets are a wonderful and exciting gift to receive for Christmas but there are so many responsibilities that come with owning an animal. Here are some tips that will hopefully help you take good care of your new friend. First of all, just like humans, a balanced diet is essential for a pet’s wellbeing. It is not healthy to give them too many table scraps, it can lead to obesity or pancreatitis. If you are unsure about what to feed your pet and what not to, it is wise to consult a veterinarian. Regular generic health checks are a good idea and the best way of preventing eventual problems or issues. A simple daily walk will help your pet maintain the right body weight and reduces the risk of various health issues.

A good piece of advice is to make sure your pet is not able to reach any toxic or harmful products, such as cleaning ones or rodent poisons. It is also necessary to regularly groom your animal to maintain a shiny coat and healthy skin as well as avoiding bad smells. Good maintenance is very important for your pet, a clean and healthy environment is all an animal needs, as well as your time and love. It is good animal care to give some attention to your pet and create a bond with it. Remember to keep track of your pet’s medical history. Keeping informed about its health is incredibly important, you can search the internet for answers from reliable sources but it is always best to speak to a vet. Most importantly, don’t forget to speak up if you notice any neglected or mistreated pets anywhere, there are many animal rescue companies that are willing to take these creatures on and give them a better life.

Taxation: Question: I am employed – is it true that I can claim for expenses and set these against my PAYE income and obtain tax relief? Answer: An employee cannot claim tax relief for the cost of ‘ordinary commuting’, such as travel between home and a permanent workplace. As a general rule, a ‘permanent workplace’ is a place which the employee regularly attends in the performance of employment duties, which is not a temporary workplace. An employee can generally claim tax relief from their earnings for travel expenses and other expenses if certain conditions are satisfied. Care should be taken or professional advice obtained as HMRC will contest any claim, particularly if the claim is workplace based. Question: I am an employer so what do I have to do to ensure I am ready for Auto Enrolment (AE)?
Good maintenance is very important for your pet, a clean and healthy environment is all an animal needs, as well as your time and love.
Answer: As employers, you should now all be aware of your responsibilities under AE with your staging dates for commencement of these arrangements either notified or shortly to be notified to you. Qualifying employees will need to be automatically enrolled into a suitable pension scheme with the option of opting-out of this arrangement if they so decide. Employers must make this scheme by the staging date applicable to them, or face penalties or worse! Following on from last month’s question regarding HMRC acting like “Big Brother”, HMRC now have new powers to request information from UK’s merchant acquirers – the companies that process card payment transactions. This will enable HMRC to data-mine information on all credit and debit card payments made over the last four years. It would seem likely that HMRC will use their Connect software to make connections within the data obtained that will forward investigations into taxpayers’ affairs.
Dates to remember 19 January PAYE due for the tax month ended 5 January 2014 if paying by cheque or 22 January electronically. 31 January is the online filing date for self-assessment 2013 tax returns for individuals, partnerships and trsutees. 31 January is the date your balancing payment is due for the tax year ended 5 April 2013 and the first payment on account (if any is due) for the tax year ended 5 April 2014. Payment should be made to ensure HMRC receive it by the 31st. And don’t forget you must file your 2013 self-assessment tax return to avoid late filing penalties!

St Johns Primary School
The Autumn Term was a very busy one for us and was brought to a fantastic conclusion when the children all took part in their Christmas Performances! They made us all very proud and we were amazed with the confidence of the Reception children on stage - especially after just three months in school! Well done to you all!
A big ‘thank you’ to our parents for their outstanding support in providing costumes, ensuring the children had learnt lines and ferrying them back and forth for evening performances! We were also very proud when our gymnastic team did incredibly well during the Peterborough Primary School Gymnastics Competition for Key Stage 2 pupils, on Tuesday 26th November, where they placed 1st in the Years 5 and 6 categories and 2nd in the Years 3 and 4 section. The focus of the event was to give children the opportunity to participate in a gymnastics setting that caters for school curricular gymnastics as well as
for those who attended a club outside of school hours. The competition consisted of two disciplines: Floor and Vault. The children had two opportunities to perform their vault with the best score counting towards their overall mark. The children’s score for the two disciplines were added together to create their overall score. The children certainly took part with obvious pleasure and it certainly gave them the opportunity to perform their work in a very positive environment. After that fantastic result they now progress to take part in the county championships later this term. We are sure you will join with us in wishing them the very best of luck!

The children enjoyed the Christmas Dinner which is always very popular with them and and enjoyed being waited on by the staff, pulling crackers and wearing party hats. Our Christmas celebrations brought to a lovely close which saw the whole School walk to their choir service at St Johns Church. School finished on Friday 20th and re opens on Tuesday 7th January. Season’s greetings to all of our children, parents/careers and our local community.

Salon owner Emilio Pepe knows the secret to the success of creating your perfect style – after all Emilio’s has been doing it for more than two decades. He says: “We have been here for more than 20 years and the reasons are plain to see – we offer amazing value for money – great customer service and punctuality. You’re not left waiting at Emilio’s – we never keep customers hanging around – we know that for all of us time is money, hence we offer an efficient service.” Professionally trained staff are the key at Emilio’s: “We ensure that we take youngsters with potential and train them from the start. We really want to nurture young talent rather than poach people from local salons – that way we make sure that our staff are trained our way. Which we think is the best way.” Emilio himself is a specialist in cutting and styling – he has more than 25 years of experience in both hairdressing and barbering and the salon itself specialises in hair colour and hair colour correction. The latest service available is the Keratin Treatment which takes the frizz out of your hair but the salon also offers a number of special discounts which you can find on the salon’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook. com/pages/Emilio-Hair-Design/294759887231011. Cosmic Katie‘s Stars
JANUARY 2014
By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer
Aries March 21-April 19 As you enter into the New Year, you will feel like an enormous weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Decisions will be made that could alter the direction of your life, both professionally and personally. Just remember - you cannot change other people, but you can change how you react towards them. Taurus
April 20-May21 What are you actually waiting for? You can’t put your life on hold hoping that someone will wave a magic wand and make it happen - you have to go out there and get it! This is your time to shine and be heard, so find your voice, be brave and be proactive. Finances are set to improve toward the end of the month!
Gemini May 22-June 22 What a learning curve you have been on, and it’s not over yet. You life has had many twists and turns and you often wonder why everything is going against the grain. Be patient, all you hard work will pay off. News concerning of a former colleague will shock you; make sure you don’t get involved in their dilemmas. Cancer June 23-July 23 “Hello 2014!” at last you can say good riddance to what has been a tremendously tough year and you won’t look back. Developments at work will keep you on your toes; just make sure you don’t overload yourself. Beware of jealousy as a so called friend will reveal their true colours. Extra Money heads your way by the middle of the month! Leo July 24-August 23 Your feet won’t touch the floor this month - not only will you popular and in demand, others will also expect you to fix their problems, learn to say ‘no’ so as to not be overburdened. Money worries are set to ease at the end of the month, allowing you to breathe a little easier. Virgo
August 24-September 23 You can no longer keep living in limbo; you have to make some firm decisions as to which direction you want your life to take. Everything needs to move forward. Work demands will be high, ensure you address your work/life balance. News concerning a property will make your ears prick up!
Libra September 24-October 23 Although the festive season is over, invites will still come flooding your way, just be selective about which you accept. A change of heart regarding a relationship will put your head in a spin, think carefully before you act. Address any health niggles, your need to be strong this year. Scorpio October 24-November 22 There’s a new found determination about you now and you won’t let anybody or anything stand in your way. Although it’s an anxious time right now, stay positive and focussed on the end result. Keep your thoughts in check, as a loose tongue could cause a lot of chaos! A surprise turn in your work life will give you reason to celebrate. Sagittarius
November 23-December 21 Whoever has doubted you previously will have to eat their words. You are persistent and focussed, and your hard work is about to pay off. This month will be frantic and you won’t know which way is up, take a deep breath and keep striding forward. A new addition to the family will put a smile on your face.
Capricorn December 22-January 20 With the start of the New Year comes a major breakthrough in your work life, just don’t lose sight of where you are heading. Conflict in your love life could leave you reeling, but you may only have yourself to blame. If you are ‘too busy’ to bother with friends, don’t be surprised if they just move on. Aquarius January 21-February 19 Travel plans will be in full swing by the end of January, but you could find yourself in a logistical tangle. Sort matters out quickly rather than sweeping them under the carpet. A new work situation looks promising, do your research and your charm will do the rest. Complications in your love life will cause some sleepless nights. Pisces February 20-March 20 This year you are going to take a different view and approach to your life, there are many aspects that need attention, do what feels right for YOU. A family feud could rear its head again; do your best to not get dragged into it. A job opportunity will get your mind racing - what are you waiting for?
If it is your birthday this month....
This is your year! It’s now time to do something radical to change the way you live and work - whatever you turn you hand to will be a huge success. Old friends will reconnect with you and it will be great to catch up - let the reminiscing commence. Beneath your tough exterior is someone who just needs nurturing and loving, relationship developments will make you smile - trust your gut feelings!

COMPUTER TIP OF THE MONTH For further assistance with your computers please contact me on 01733 244544 I trust you all had a fantastic Christmas break? I would like to thank all my customers for their continued business during 2013 and look forward to see you in 2014 along with new clients. Happy new year to you all! No doubt some of you would have received new computer gadget gifts and are thoroughly enjoying them. It is worth checking that you have the best suited security software installed and are not relying on a trial version which could run out soon. I also advise installing some parental protection software on your computer, tablet and smart phone to ensure your children don’t accidently stumble into the wrong material on line!

January can be a cold month with some very bright, sharp, crisp days and it is the time when wild birds need feeding. Birds are particularly appreciative of fat balls this time of the year and feeding the birds in your garden will not only reward you of seeing them have their young in the spring but will assist you by eating aphids and many plant damaging pests. Please ensure that they have access to plenty of fresh, clean water at all times. Check your plants that you have fleeced for winter protection to ensure that there is enough air movement in the centre of the plant or trees and that they are free from damaged leaf tissue and securely protected. Check all plant ties and stakes not forgetting the rabbit guards. During January, you can of course start to force Rhubarb, this is done by placing a container over the top of the crown with a little straw around the plant and then placing a container (a large up turned terracotta pot with a hole is ideal for this) and doing this will ensure an early harvest of tender Rhubarb stems. If the weather is good and the ground permits you can plant Raspberry canes and in the veg garden over the next month or two you can start to chit your new potatoes - this is easily done by placing your new potatoes in a container such as empty egg boxes which are ideal for this, place the seed potatoes uppermost in the container with the eyes at the top and then place them in a cool, airy, light, frost-free place.
Computer Classes – 10:30am til 12pm – Designed for complete beginners and covers everything you’ll need to know. Stanground Library. 01733 864302.
Now, a shrub worth mentioning this month which is not seen as often as it should be is a plant called a” Sarcococca “ this is also known as the “Christmas” or the “Sweet” box - they are an evergreen plant with glossy leaves and incredible small, sweet smelling flowers. They are reliable, easy to grow being ideal for a formal shrub bed or even planted in a container. It grows to about 5ft tall, spreads reasonably wide and flowering from December with tiny white scented flowers followed by small black berries. Sarcococca’s can cope with sun and shade so is an excellent garden plant.
Scouts – 7:30pm til 9pm – 10½-14yrs - Scout hut on Thistle Drive contact Carolyn Lumley on 01733 561479.
And remember... “Grass is just a flower bed in waiting and new gardeners learn by trowel and error”
