Safe Local Trades raise over £6,720 for Age UK Peterborough During September and October each year, Peterborough based Safe Local Trades organise fund-raising events for their chosen charity Age UK Peterborough. This year, there were several skydives organised and a team took part in the annual Great Eastern Run. All events were an overall success and the organiser, Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, said: “We would like to thank each and every volunteer who took part as well as everyone who sponsored them in their events, all of which helped to raise an amazing £6,720.25 for this very worthy local charity.” Eileen went on to say, “We would particularly like to thank Axiom Housing Association for getting involved and helping to raise over £1,600. In addition to the skydives that two members of staff took part in, dozens of individual sheltered accommodation schemes raised money by having coffee mornings, quizzes, and the like—it shows great

community spirit to know that elderly people were raising money for their counterparts”. David Bache, Chief Executive of Age UK Peterborough, said “We are so delighted with this excellent achievement by Eileen and the fabulous volunteers. This is the largest amount we have ever raised in one campaign so my sincere thanks go to Eileen Le Voi, Axiom Housing Association and all the wonderful volunteers who make such a difference to the work we do to help and support older people in Peterborough. Over the past few years, Eileen and Safe Local Trades have helped raise over £25,000 – no other local company has ever raised this amount for our charity and we are enormously grateful.”

Ghostly Goings-on at Peterborough Museum Peterborough Museum not only has a fascinating history and many wonderful objects, but also has a reputation as Peterborough’s most haunted building. Now the Museum is offering you the chance to soak up the spooky atmosphere for themselves on one of two real, live ghost hunts…

On Saturday 24 January 2015 the Museum is staging a special ghost hunting event. During this unique evening you will be led on a tour of the Museum’s haunted locations, including areas not normally open to the public, and after being briefed by expert ghost hunters on what goes on at a paranormal vigil you will get the chance to visit the allegedly haunted locations until the small hours. Who knows, your presence may prompt supernatural activity! Stuart Orme, Vivacity’s Events and Programmes Manager said ‘We’ve obviously found a great deal of interest in this subject.

Many of the people who have been on our ghost walks have expressed interest on finding out more about what goes on in a real ghost-hunt, so we’re delighted to be able to satisfy that interest!’

Although no guarantees are given of ghostly happenings, it does promise to be a fascinating evening, and the Museum’s apparitions may always decide to put in an appearance. In the last couple of months a number of people have reported spooky experiences inside this building…

Tickets for this event are strictly limited in numbers, for adults only and cost £35, which includes light refreshments. The event starts at 8pm and will finish before 4am. As these are popular events we will be running a second night of ghost hunting on Friday 27 March 2015. For more details and bookings please contact the Museum on (01733) 864663, e-mail: museum@vivacity-peterborough.com, or visit the website at:

Stanground & Farcet C of E Churches Happy New Year to everyone in Stanground! At a time of looking to the future I find myself thinking about children. Stanground’s primary schools are bursting at the seams! I conclude that there are a lot of children living here, and of course with all the families moving into Cardea there are going to be more and more. I am delighted to tell you that one of the main focuses of our work at St Michael’s Church this year is around families and children, making sure all ages are welcome and feel part of the family of the church. The old African proverb, ‘It takes a whole village to raise a child’, really resonates with me and I believe that a family like the church where there are people of all ages and be a great environment for children to grow up in. For babies, toddlers and parents, we have Little Angels on Mondays as a place to come an meet, play and do craft together. For years 3-6 there is the church club, Friday Friends. And on Sundays we have Sunday Friends and church services for all ages where we learn and share together. We don’t believe in young people just sitting there, but try to give everyone a chance to contribute. An especially exciting development is our recently formed Youth Band. I hope and pray that this will be first of many exciting things as we grow as a church for all ages.

Cardea Community First Responders Cardea Community First Responders are members of the local community. Volunteers trained by the East of England Ambulance Service to attend emergency calls in our local area. In Cardea, there are 4 qualified Community First Responders (CFRs), Alex Burch, Charlotte Hamilton, Jen Owen and Kelvin Newton. In the New Year we hope to welcome at least two more volunteers, after training. What we do

Areas we cover

How you can help

When a 999 call reaches Ambulance control, we are activated if the emergency is in our area and it is appropriate for us to attend. We will provide emergency and lifesaving care to a patient before an ambulance can arrive. We are trained to deal with unconscious patients, those suffering breathing difficulties, diabetic emergencies, allergic reactions, strokes, heart attacks and more.

Cardea, Park Farm, and some of Farcet and Stanground. Our aim is provide emergency care before an ambulance arrives, so we only have a modest range.

If you want to volunteer, contact Alex at the email below to find out more. Our aim is to make sure that there is cover 24/7, but we are volunteers who work and have other commitments.

Are we paramedics? No, CFRs are volunteers trained to respond to life threatening emergencies, we are volunteers for the Ambulance Service. We will always be backed up by an ambulance. Previous medical experience is not required.

Who pays for this?

The more volunteers we have the more cover we can provide! If you can donate to support our work, donations can be made direct to the East of England Ambulance Trust (for Cardea First Responders) or to the Cardea Resident’s Association (for the First Responders).

You! Community fund raising pays for the main parts of our equipment. The volunteers are not paid, nor do they receive expenses such as mileage or subsistence. Each set of equipment can cost in excess of £2,000. The Ambulance Service provides our training and our consumable equipment.

I hope that everyone had a happy and peaceful Christmas, and welcome to 2015. A new year means a new start doesn’t it? A time when we all turn a new page and begin a fresh chapter in our lives. Here at Cardea we have lots of hopes and plans for the twelve months ahead of us, we are busy working at setting these plans in motion and hope to have lots of good news for our community very soon. Can’t reveal too much as yet but watch this space! One thing I can say is that we begin working towards our Summer Fete this month and want it to be bigger and better than last year , in order to do this we need your help dear residents so please join us either at our CRA monthly meetings or on Facebook MyCardea. On a personal note traditionally I’ve tried to make a New Year Resolution which normally begins with a bit of a negative idea , that is to give something up – crisps or wine are my usual vices, or lose something – like weight ! As we all know these resolutions more often than not fail at the first hurdle leaving us feeling guilty. So this year I’m doing things differently, I’m giving up nothing but taking up something new …….sounds a much more positive idea doesn’t it , doing something to make myself or someone else feel good ? Each month I’m going to do something nice, either for myself or for someone else, and I’ll report back here how it goes. I haven’t decided exactly what my “nice” things will be but one involves trying a Zumba class with some friends – they know who they are! So once again Happy 2015 let’s make this year one to remember. by Kate Ferris

MONEY MATTERS

Do you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdnco.co.uk and if of general interest, it will be published here!

Please note that the December 2014 edition included errors made by the publishers which were beyond our control, the newsletter with the hidden code can still be seen on our website and online edition. Question: Is it true that I can claim 100% allowance for the cost of my motorcycle that is used in my business? Answer: Yes it is true that you can claim 100% capital allowances (called Initial Investment Allowance) for the purchase of a motorcycle that is used wholly and exclusively for business purposes. From 1 or 6 April 2009 motorcycles were not categorised as cars for capital allowance purposes, although they were before that date. For capital allowance purposes, a car is any mechanically propelled road vehicle unless it is: • constructed in such a way that it is primarily suited for transporting goods of any sort • not commonly used or suitable for use as a private vehicle

Tax: Capital Expenditure - This is the cost of buying, creating or improving a business asset, used to increase profit. For example, the cost of buying a van for your business would fall under capital expenditure. Other examples include buying machinery, technology, fixtures etc. Business Expenditure - You can get tax relief for your business costs (called revenue expenditure) as long as its not capital expenditure or specifically non-allowable. Examples of specifically non-allowable expenses are the legal costs of buying property, entertaining clients and any payments for non-business costs.

EAAA receive no direct government funding, so the £7.6millon needed this year to continue our work comes directly from our generous supporters. Many local supporters chose to show their support for EAAA through holding charity fundraising events. An event that raises £280 for EAAA is enough to fund three lifesaving Autopulse life bands which are used for chest compression. Jean and Rob Blackham, from Balsham in Cambridgeshire, held a celebration for their 50th wedding anniversary and raised £300 for EAAA, enough to find three Autopulse lifebands. The couple asked their 32 guests to donate to the lifesaving charity in memory of EAAA Fundraising Manager, Alison Horsley, who lived in the village. Jean said: ‘We had a fantastic time with our friends and family and we are delighted to have raised £300 from the event. We asked our guests to donate to EAAA in place of giving gifts as we have been together for 50 years and have everything we need. ’ If you are interested in hosting an event for EAAA, and helping us to fund our service over East Anglia, why not contact your local Fundraising Manager, Barbara McGee on 01763262697, who would be happy to help.

From tiny acorns to mighty oaks The Stanground Academy garden is finally taking shape On Thursday 13 November the brand new garden at the Stanground Academy was officially opened.

and it is hoped that the produce grown will then be supplied to a local care home, bringing students, their families and the local community together.

The garden project is the creation of Mr Mike Schofield, Teacher of Design and Technology. He has worked relentlessly, mostly in his own time over the past six months to secure donations and help from volunteers to construct an exciting environmental project for students and the wider community to enjoy.

Supplies have been generously donated from Jewsons, Dobbies, B&Q, Eurovia, Marshalls and Peterborough City Council. In addition to donating supplies, Eurovia also has a construction team on site this week to install block paving pathways and two benches.

Mr Schofield’s vision was to create a space in the grounds of the newly built Academy for students to experience a life beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and selfdevelopment. The Government’s new manifesto states that projects like these add value to classroom learning; not only helping to raise achievement, but also supporting the development of key life skills such as problem-solving, cooperation and communication and offering opportunities for creativity, challenge and adventure. When the garden is complete, students will grow their own organic fruit and vegetables

A group of year 10 students had the opportunity to gain first-hand experience from the Eurovia team of how to lay a pathway and the preparation work required, as well as laying brick edging to flower borders, after first learning about health and safety on a building site. So far 1,250 bulbs, seven fruit trees, vegetables, various shrubs and a beautiful bamboo have been planted. Ged Rae, Principal of the Stanground Academy, said: “I am delighted to see our garden finally taking shape. I would like to thank Mr Schofield for all his hard work. His organisation and enthusiasm has been infectious, transferring onto staff and students alike, developing a team of volunteers who have worked in all weathers to develop the garden. I am sure that this will be a place which many people enjoy for many years to come.” Bob Sutton, Eurovia Contracts Manager, said: “We are delighted to be able to help Stanground Academy with this project. We have been able to re-use materials from our Public Realm works in

New Appointment at Stanground St John’s In January 2015, I shall be joining Stanground St John’s C of E Primary School, as the new Head Teacher. I feel privileged to lead such a friendly and caring school. Peterborough to help create this garden. In addition we have been able to give pupils the opportunity to work alongside our crews and gain hands-on experience in construction works.” Peter Hiller, cabinet member for planning and housing services at Peterborough City Council, said: “I am delighted we have been able to donate materials, like benches and paving slabs, from the improvements on Long Causeway to be reused in this fantastic project. “We try our best to recycle materials wherever we can for the benefit of the community, as this helps to keep the city green and contributes to our ambitions to be the UK’s environment capital. “This project is the latest that we have been pleased to support with reclaimed materials, and there are more organisations that Eurovia and the council will be working with in the coming weeks. “Two of the council’s core aims are to improve residents’ quality of life and raise educational standards, and these initiatives feed perfectly into both of these wider objectives.”

Your January garden In January, your garden could need protecting from frosts, gale-force winds and heavy rain. Check stakes, ties, fleeces and other supports for damage and consider moving plants to sunnier positions to maximize light. Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, food is scarce for them over winter. You can also start planning next year’s vegetable plot.

Top 10 jobs this month 1 Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch 2 Ventilate the greenhouse on sunny days 3 Dig over vacant plots that have not been dug already 4 Repair and re-shape lawn edges 5 Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out 6 Prune apple and pear trees 7 Start forcing rhubarb 8 Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season 9 Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds 10 Prepare a polythene shelter for outdoor peaches and nectarines, to protect them from peach leaf curl source: www.rhs.org.uk

Whittlesey Washes Update Rings End to Poplar House Farm This area of work is close to completion, with bank works now finished for the winter. The top-soiling and grass seeding has been completed; the bridge over the Counter Drain and the access track at Goosetree have been removed. The contractor will return in the summer to complete some work and repair the damage that has been caused by some unauthorised access.

CCTV is in use and the EA will prosecute anyone found to be trespassing. If you witness any unauthorised access please call the EA’s Contact Centre on 03708 506 506 or the 24 hour incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60. Vegetation management

Poplar House Farm to Bassenhally

Recently there have been a number of occasions of people, livestock and vehicles gaining unauthorised access on to the South Barrier Bank of the Whittlesey Washes, causing significant damage to the bank.

To reduce the likelihood of birds nesting, and possibly delaying works next year, over the winter period the EA will be clearing reed from the Counter Drain between Bassenhally and Eldernell. This section of bank, as well as between Ball Bridge and Stanground, will be grazed by sheep to keep the grass short.

This area of works has progressed well. The work is now finished for this year and the site has been secured for the winter. The contractor will return in summer 2015 to complete the works. The public footpath will remain diverted until December 2016.

The Environment Agency (EA) wants to remind everyone that the South Barrier Bank is private land. The public footpath will remain diverted until December 2015. The growth of the grass is being regularly monitored and the diversion will be removed sooner if the bank is ready.

Kingfisher habitat A kingfisher bank has been created at Rings End as part of the project’s environmental and biodiversity enhancements. This will give the kingfisher a protected area to nest and breed and was delivered in partnership with the RSPB.

Material will be brought to the site using Funtham’s Lane from December 2014 and throughout the winter, ready to place onto the bank in spring 2015. Creating a material stockpile over the winter will reduce the volume of lorry traffic movements during the spring/summer of 2015.

Trespassing

Funtham’s Lane, Whittlesey

Have your say! The bi-weekly Wednesday surgeries held at Whittlesey Town Council have now finished for 2014. These will start again next year to coincide with the 2015 works. The EA’s Public Liaison Officer Monica Stonham is available to deal with any questions you may have about the project. Please contact Monica on 07577 470803 or email her at WhittleseyWashesProjectEA@gmail.com.

Syn-free chips

We all love a treat, so why not try these delicious syn-free chips? Ingredients • 900g medium sized Maris Piper potatoes • Low calorie cooking spray • Crushed sea salt and malt vinegar

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 240°C/220°C Fan/Gas 9. Peel the potatoes using a potato peeler and remove any blemishes or ‘eyes’. Slice lengthwise into approx 1cm thick rectangular chips. 2. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil. Add the chips and cook for 4 minutes. Drain and leave aside for 10 minutes to dry. 3. Return the chips to the dry saucepan, cover with a lid and shake to ‘’’’rough up’’’’ the edges of the chips - this roughness is important to the texture of the chips. 4. Spray a metal baking tray with low calorie cooking spray. Transfer the chips to the tray, spray lightly with low calorie cooking spray and bake in the oven for 30 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown on all sides. Drain them on absorbent kitchen paper and serve with salt and vinegar.

Tip:

For extra flavour sprinkle your chip s with garlic salt, he rbs and spices

Separation and divorce Statistically January is the most common month for couples to separate. Christmas is over, finances are tight and we start to think about fresh starts. Separating or getting divorced is never going to be pleasant but it is possible to reduce the heartache and costs involved.

When a couple decide to separate or divorce it is not unusual to feel frightened, vulnerable and unsure where to turn. Clients need expert, friendly and proactive advice but don’t always know where to find it. Abby Smith of Woolley & Co Solicitors always approaches these matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting clients to reach a swift, amicable agreement but one which best protects their needs now and in the future. Abby Smith has many years’ experience in dealing with such issues and is an accredited specialist in this field.

When separating or divorcing, the most important issues to consider are the property and finances, together with matters relating to the children. Stanground Blog

I was thinking... Happy New Year! I hope that by the time you read this, those of you who overindulged during the festive period have recovered from the inevitable hangover. Of course thanks to the wonderful world of advance deadlines I’ve not even made plans to do anything for New Years yet, so happily all of that is still in the future for me. I’ll most likely end up in the pub. I’ve always enjoyed New Year’s Eve (not to be confused with New Year’s Day which I most certainly do not enjoy), it’s an event that requires little to no preparation whatsoever on my part, since I have never and will never host a house party. All it requires is either stopping at a cashpoint on the way to the pub or picking up a crate of Magners on the way to a party. It doesn’t get much easier than that. Unless its a fancy dress party, I’m not a fan of fancy dress parties, as anyone who has read more than one of these blogs could probably guess, most of my amusement from fancy dress parties is the terrible excuse I invent for why I’m just wearing normal clothes. New Year is also wonderful for the time off work, it blends into the Christmas break quite well, providing me with plenty of time to lounge around the house, annoying the cat and feasting on the leftovers we have. Though when the time does eventually come to return to the office, I’ll inevitably find myself still writing the date as 2014 rather than 2015 for a good few weeks. Resolutions; I can’t say I’ve ever actually made one, since I am a person with absolutely no willpower. The easy resolutions are out for me, I’m far too lazy to exercise or start going to a gym, my borderline addiction to Oreos means that I have no interest in dieting and I’ve been sensible enough this far not to take up smoking. I suppose I could make a resolution to give up the Oreos but I fear this would have a drastic effect on my productivity and jolly demeanour at work. I’m always vaguely impressed by someone who can make a resolution and actually stick to it for the entire year. The best one I can recall was a friend of mine who took a picture of something interesting in his life every day for a year. I know if I ever tried to do that I’d forget or lose interest in it by approximately the second week of January. I’d like to wish everyone reading this a very happy new year, and I really do implore you to ignore my pessimism and make a resolution for the new year and see if you can actually stick to it. Try and do something positive! by Jack Moakes

How many of you have made a New Year’s resolution in the past and actually stuck to it?

Lose weight? Check. Start exercising? Check. Stop smoking? Check. Was it just the last of the pine needles beneath your feet or a real prick of conscience? Was it merely the tree’s angel going back into her box or has the spirit of our past year already fallen? Does it feel a little gloomy because the pretty lights have all gone out, or are the cold shadows cast by the January dawn exactly what will provoke in us the will to change things for the better. The beginning of a week, a month, or a year forms what the psychologists have called a ‘notational boundary’, and with that, researchers suspect, comes a sense of optimism, the promise of ‘a new me’. Perhaps it is the novelty factor in the word ‘new’, but somehow many of us manage to quickly put the errors of the past behind us, by transforming it into a new sense of optimism for the future. Nevertheless, that novelty appears to quickly wear off. Research indicates that a tiny eight per cent of New Year resolutions actually succeed! So, how can you shorten the odds of staying out of the betting shop, let cigarettes finally go up in a puff of smoke and increase the chances of actually keeping that excess weight off?

Unhealthy behaviours develop over the course of time. Replacing the ones we’re not so proud of also requires time. Don’t become overwhelmed and think that you have to reassess everything in your life. Instead, work toward changing one thing at a time. Don’t beat yourself up Perfection is unattainable. Remember that minor missteps on the path to reaching your goals are completely normal. Don’t give up completely because you ate a brownie and broke your diet, or skipped the gym for a week because you were busy. Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track. Team up with others who share your goal and make your resolution obvious

Research has also shown that sharing resolutions with Optimism, however, isn’t always constructive. If family and friends, and also sharing your statement we’re too positive, we condemn ourselves to fail. So of intent with others, can help you succeed. It’s a way if follows that, if you set more realistic goals, you are to build accountability into the mix; and in the era more likely to succeed. of social media this can be a readily accessible tool. Make your resolutions realistic Consider joining a support group to reach your goals, Make resolutions that you think you can keep. If, for such as a workout class at your gym, or a group of co-workers quitting smoking. Having someone to example, your aim is to exercise more frequently, share your struggles and successes with makes your schedule three or four days a week at the gym journey to a healthier lifestyle that much easier and instead of seven. If you would like to eat healthier, less intimidating. Jotting down what you stand to lose try replacing dessert with something else you by breaking your resolve will help to remind you why enjoy, like fruit or yogurt, instead of seeing your you are trying to break a bad habit. diet as a form of punishment.

by Mel Elliott Anecdotal evidence suggests that one’s commitment to a determined spouse can also be helpful. “I haven’t had a cigarette in probably six years,” President Obama once said, “...because I’m scared of my wife.” Accepting help from those who care about you and will listen strengthens your resilience and ability to manage stress caused by your resolution. If you feel overwhelmed or unable to meet your goals on your own, consider seeking professional help. Psychologists are trained to understand the connection between the mind and body. They can offer strategies as to how to adjust your goals so that they are attainable, as well as help you change unhealthy behaviours and address emotional issues. To conclude, here’s a New Year’s resolution anyone can keep: Resolve not to make any more New Year’s resolutions. Now, wasn’t that easy? You know in your own heart what you want to change and although now is often as good a time as ever, by not limiting yourself to a once-a-year, do-or-die, all-out assault on that Everest of debt, those flabby thighs, or the hideous wallpaper you keep meaning to replace, you may find that the finish line isn’t so far away after all.

Cosmic Katie‘s Stars

JANUARY 2015 Aries March 21-April 20

By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer

If you are yearning for a new direction either with a relationship or career change, this is the year to show those around you that you mean business, don’t hide you light under a bushel. Last year was challenging, but this is the year of rewards.

Taurus April 21-May21

Change is in order as 2015 begins; there is much to consider, both on your love life and on the work front. Instead of shying away, stand up, speak up and showcase your talents, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Gemini May 22-June 22 It’s all systems go as you hit the ground running this month, you’ll be very much in demand and eager to please everyone. In a relationship? expect exciting changes and even the possibility of commitment. Single? don’t settle for less than you deserve, aim high and stand your ground. Cancer June 23-July 23

At last 2015 is finally here, and you for one couldn’t be happier. You’ll have big plans for this year, and will aim to squeeze every drop out of it. Optimism and positivity are order of the day, don’t look backwards because you’re not going that way.

Leo

July 24-August 23 How much longer can you keep up with facade? whom are you actually trying to fool? The only way to be truly happy is to face matters head on and deal with the problem in hand. A financial gain or pay increase is set to make you smile.

Virgo August 24-September 23 At last, you can start to firmly make plans towards your future and finally reach a long anticipated goal. Now you have an agenda in place, do not lose sight of what you are doing. BIg changes on the work front will cause shockwaves - be prepared. Libra September 24-October 23 You’ll need to clear the air this month and set the record straight, as someone close may well have the wrong impression of you. 2015 brings change and opportunity on the work front, make sure the figures match up to the workload. Scorpio October 24-November 22 Your positivity and optimism is infectious and you are surround by people who want to see you succeed. Whatever you set your mind to this month you are sure to excel at. This year will be a journey of self discovery, how much can you achieve? Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Priorities are order of the month - are yours in the right order, and are you sure? Take time to evaluate what is really important to you and your loved ones. Keep a close eye on your health and address and niggles. Success and recognition at work are yours for the taking. Capricorn December 22-January 20 You’ve had a major breakthrough and can finally see a way of moving forward during 2015. This month, ensure you keep up momentum as your hard work will pay off. Spending time with love ones will be a top priority, they need your support like never before.

Aquarius January 21-February 19 Why are you still looking over your shoulder, could it be that you can’t get a certain person or situation out of your head? You have big plans for 2015, make sure that you include the right people with you and not those just to make up numbers. Pisces February 20-March 20 Expectations are high as you enter the new year, especially from family members and loved ones, be firm and ensure everyone is kept up-to date with developments or else a heated debate could erupt.

If it is your birthday this month.... You’ll approach this new year with clarity and direction. For far too long you’ve been governed by others, but now it’s your chance to direct which way your life goes. 2015 will see you emerge stronger, healthier and ready for a new challenge.
