For those of you who are yet to join, you are missing out on a great interactive facility, conversations and ideas of for things to do in this glorious weather. A big thank you to all the local residents who have contacted us with news and stories for this issue. Our inbox grows fuller each month and we appreciate all the great support we are receiving. We love seeing these old pictures and the more mature people in the community may enjoy the memories. Please don’t forget to mention this publication when you approach any of advertisers, as without them we couldn’t bring you The Stanground Gazette. SUMMERTIME PROMOTIONS
Stanground C of E Churches Things are really exciting in Stanground churches just now. At the beginning of June, we had a brilliant first visit to the new St Michael’s Church School in Cardea with an amazing turn out of adults and children of all ages. The school hall was packed! We hope that now Cardea knows that our churches are here and that we have a variety of different worship styles on offer, from the more traditional Holy Communion at St John’s at 9.30 am to the ‘we never know what might happen next’ services for all ages which happen fortnightly at St Michael’s. Also at St Michael’s on the weeks we have a Holy Communion there is a group called ‘Sunday Friends’ for school years reception to about year 4. This means that if you have children every service there is a good one for you and they are always at 11.15. At the end of June, we have an old favourite returning to Stanground. On the 29th at 6.30, there will be Songs of Praise in St John’s. You are invited to suggest an item to include - just let us know what your favourite hymn is and why you have chosen it. The better the story you have to tell the more likely it is to be included! Then at the service, itself there will be a list of Britain’s top 50 and we will have a poll to see which of these we like best. If you love a good sing, this event is for you! I hope you are enjoying the summer as much as I am!

Cardea update
By Kate Ferris Cardea Residents Association Secretary
Gearing up for summer We’re gearing up for summer; busy planning our first Community Picnic in the Park which will be held on 2nd August not actually in a park but in the grounds of St Michaels School who have kindly lent us their lovely playground and field. We are hoping for sunny weather and for lots of people not only from Cardea but surrounding areas too, to come along and celebrate our community with us! Sunday 1st June was a special day for us as we had our first Church Service led by Reverend Anne Shorter and the congregation from St Michaels and all Angels in Mace Road Stanground. It really was a lovely affair attended by people from St Johns in Stanground and St Mary’s in Farcet who came over to show their support for us and meet Cardea families, there was a fantastic turnout and everyone sang, laughed and enjoyed themselves. As we do not have a Church of our own we used St Michaels School and everyone was invited on a tour of the fantastic facilities that our children have.
Last time I talked about the use of our recreation areas and how good it is to see folk enjoying living here, of course the school holidays will see more children and families out and about and so I really want to urge people to think about the state that our green areas are left in as lately the playing fields and basketball courts have been treated like rubbish tips! We are soon hoping to have some litter bins that will be maintained by voluntary members of the Cardea Residents Association, please use them and encourage your children to do the same as we do not have any Council Services here other than our household bin collections. Thank You.
Hope to see you all soon!

I have always believed that a good close relationship with a Landlord is paramount, not just working for them but working out any problems and coming up with solutions. This is the way I work and that’s why I am here at Paull & Rose because we all believe here this is how a lettings business should be run.

Let’s Get Messy St Michael’s Pre-School We can’t believe it’s almost the end of another academic year already! With paperwork completed, it’s fun, fun, fun until the holidays! We have a special visit from the Raptor Foundation, Male Carers’ Week, Summer Celebration at St Michael’s & All Angels’ church and our leavers’’ trip too. We can’t wait! Thank you to everyone who came along to support our Spring Fayre on 17th May, we really appreciate it! Our books are almost full for September, but we do have some spaces left for funded and non-funded children, so get in touch on 01733 686158 for further details and let us know you heard about us in the Stanground Gazette. We’d like to wish all our leavers good luck at ‘big’ school - we’ll miss you all.
Stanground St John’s CofE Primary School converted to an Academy in November 2013 now proudly coming under the umbrella of The Diocese of Ely Multi-Academy Trust.
Blackberry House Day Nursery in Peterborough have been trying out all kinds of messy play.
To celebrate we unveiled our new School logo on our uniform, external signs, headed paper and website coinciding with the Feast of St John the Baptist in June.
The children love to get involved in messy experiences, from cloud dough, gloop, mud and beyond. And despite appearances, messy play can make an enormous contribution to babies’ and young children’s cognitive and creative development. The children at Blackberries are being creative when they use materials in new ways, combine previously unconnected materials and make discoveries that are new to them, messy play enables them to do all these things.
The week of festivities started with an invitation to the parents of our new September Reception Class children to find out about our School. Followed by an Open Morning for our parents to see their children’s work during the school day which always creates a buzz in School which the children enjoy.
Messy play involves the children using all their senses in the process of exploration, especially the sense of touch and offering them plenty of opportunity to mould and manipulate materials without having a focus on making or producing something. However, at Blackberries, the children are involved in every step of each creation, including making messy play items such as play dough. Our children gain an enormous sense of achievement when bringing messy play together.
The children were very excited to join their families in a picnic lunch before our annual whole school Sports Day cheered on by their friends, families and supported by The Friends of SSJ. The week finished with a whole school parade to church for the Feast of St John the Baptist service held at our partner church St John the Baptist in Stanground, just a short walk from our School. Afterwards dignitaries invited to the service were treated to cakes freshly prepared by our in-house Catering Team decorated with our red and white colours.
With the limitless resource that messy play brings, Blackberries will be able to continue to support their children’s imaginations and development. Come and visit our Outstanding setting today to join in with all the fun. Tel: 01733 566700 www.blackberrryhousedaynursery.com
Sir Harry Smith Library Volunteers Nominated for Young Person of the Year Award (YOPEY) This year, three of our students have been shortlisted for a YOPEY award. The YOPEY awards recognize young people for positive things they have done in the community or in their colleges.
Owen Davis, Lily Andrew-Martin and Daniel Flack, all Year Nine pupils at SHSCC, have been shortlisted for the award. Owen was nominated for helping Year Six pupils in their transition to secondary school, giving up his free time to help out in the college and for attending cadets outside of school. Lily was also nominated for helping Year Six pupils in their transition to secondary school, but also for helping to raise £1489 for the library by helping to arrange several Book Fairs. Lily is also very prominent in after-school clubs and plays a huge part in helping younger students to volunteer for new things. Daniel was nominated for giving up his free time to help out in the college library, for helping Year Six pupils in their transition to secondary school, and for training to be a Cybermentor. Through his volunteering, Daniel helps students who have been being bullied online. All three students will now be invited to the YOPEY awards ceremony, held at Ely Cathedral later in the year. We give our huge congratulations and support to these students and hope they come away with an award!

Other attractions at the Stanground Academy marquee included a rowing competition and spinning bike display led by the sports centre. Hair and beauty were plaiting, nail stamping and creating colourful hair styles. Art and face painting was a very popular attraction led by the art team and year 11 students, Bethany Henson and Chris Chung. Children were also ’blown away’ by the bubble blowing experiment designed by the science department. The expressive arts team also led another great opportunity for the Academy to display the talents of our unique African Drumming, with individual workshops followed by an exciting community drumming session. Also under canvas, was the media workshop and transition stall. A fantastic weekend of sun and fun was enjoyed by all those who attended and thanks goes out to all the staff and students who gave up their time to promote the talent and outstanding work of the Academy.

Taxation
Question: I’ve heard that I won’t be able to reclaim the sick pay I paid to my employees from April 2014. Is this true? Answer: Unfortunately yes. For SSP paid after 6 April 2014 no off-sets will be given. The SSP will be a total cost to the employer, although it is a legal requirement to pay SSP to eligible employees. In return the Government is going to provide more help to employees who have been off sick for 4 weeks or more, in the form of a “back to work plan”.
Tax Tips
Are your children making the most of their personal allowances? If they have income from a bank or building society account and the total income for the year is less than their personal allowance, then the child (or the parent on their behalf ) can register to receive the income gross without deduction of tax. However, if the income is derived from money that the parent has put aside on the child’s behalf then the income will be taxed as the parent’s income (at the parent’s marginal tax rate) while the child is unmarried and under 18 years of age. In his latest Budget George Osborne announced that he is introducing a New ISA (or NISA for short) from July 2014. These new rules are the most radical overhaul to ISA rules since they were introduced in 1999, and signify the Chancellor’s intention to encourage individuals to save and invest for their future. New ISA limit - the ISA allowance (the amount you can invest each tax year) will rise to £15,000 on 1 July 2014.

Your pet and parasites by Whittlesey Vets
It’s the summer and for most pet owners this is when our pets become noticeably bothered by fleas. Even the most pampered pets and susceptible to the common flea. As vets we often hear “my pet has never had fleas”, when in fact you probably have not seen one on your pet. Only a small percentage of the flea population can be found on your pet the rest will live in your carpet and soft furnishing . So if you are treating your pets; and if you treat one you must treat them all., you should treat your house too.
Your pets can contract parasites in many ways: Out on walks ticks wait for passing dog or cat to jump onto. In contact with other animals, fleas do not have a preferred host they like cats dogs, rabbits, ferrets and even hedgehogs. There are all kinds of wild animals that have come into your garden, so if your pet does not meet other animals on walks they can pick up parasites at home. We can carry parasites on our clothes, for example we can carry worm eggs on our shoes, dogs and cats walk where we walk and they lick or wash their paws therefore ingesting the eggs. There are lots of different treatments on the market to treat fleas, ticks and worms for more information please come in and see us.

• The prescription treatment you can get from
your vet are the most effective. These are licensed and are proven to work, where as store bought products in many cases don’t work and can often be dangerous to your pet if used incorrectly.
• You can purchase ‘spot on’ treatments from your
vet which are applied directly to the skin, usually once a month, and these can protect against ticks and fleas for dogs, and in cats, even worms.
• Treatments also come in a tablet form; this is
excellent for people with children, as the spot on treatments must not be touched until the area treated is dry. The tablet treatment is the ingested and there is no greasy spot on the coat.
• It is also advisable when treating any pets
that have fleas that you treat the environment too. There are lots of household treatments available but you must remember to spray all soft furnishing, under you sofa, the carpets. Any bedding the animal has been on should be washed on a hot wash (min 60’C) and after treating your house you need to vacuum where you have treated.
If you suspect your pet may have fleas or worms you can call see us at Whittlesey Veterinary Centre where our flea and worming consultations are free when you purchase a flea or worming treatment from the practice. During your free consultation our vet will weigh your pet and give them a health check in order that they may prescribe the most appropriate and effective treatment for your pets’ type and weight.

The success of the young Puma cubs continues. On the back of reaching the U9 Hereward cup final last month and an undefeated performance at the recent Deeping tournament Pumas saw more success within our thriving U9 section. We played against some quality sides from near and far while also battling the elements at a stormy Yaxley tournament and prevailed, beating a strong Deeping Rangers team in the final after narrowly pipping Netherton in the semi-final which finished with a nail biting penalty shoot-out. A great achievement for our club, some new friends made and a trophy to go into the Pumas cabinet, well done boys. Our U10s also performed extremely well at Yaxley narrowly missing out on a cup final place, going out to a strong Stamford side via the dreaded penalty shootout despite having some great chances to take the lead in the game. Congratulations to our U9s, 10s and all teams that are representing Pumas in our Summer tournaments. Come along and join our great club. We are recruiting at all age groups U6 – U11.

Powerleague Colts There’s not many people in this world who can claim to have had a more involved role in grass roots football than our Chairman Duane Baker. After 8 years as Chairman you could be forgiven for thinking that he may have started to slow down…although his hair growth has, Duane certainly hasn’t! This coming season will be his 8th year of running a youth football team, and his 6th year as club Chairman. Duane also takes on a major role within the development stage at Powerleague Colts, giving up his spare time, not only to run the club and the U16s team, but also to help run weekly training sessions for the next generation of players, with kids as young as five attending the sessions. As Duane so eloquently puts it “Football eh? Don’t you just love it” Anyone who has a budding Beckham kicking things around the house that shouldn’t be kicked, get them down to Powerleague on a Friday evening and let them kick a football about, they can even kick Duane, he won’t mind…honestly! Home & Garden
July One for the children...
by Jim Green, Farcet Nurseries
“What do you get if you divide the circumference of a Pumpkin by its diameter? Answer.... Pumpkin Pi”
July can be a hot month in the garden and water becomes very important in order to keep plants growing well particularly those in containers. If plants do not get a sufficient water supply they will wilt and possibly die. Water needs to be used wisely in order to suit the plant and the environment.
The aim should be to give plants sufficient water without waste and one way to do this is to water directly around the plant waste and not all over the leaves. It is a good idea to water in the evening in order to reduce evaporation and allow the water to reach the roots. It is always a good idea to water thoroughly less often than little and often as to do the latter only encourages the plants roots to the surface of the soil rather than searching deeper for water and nutrients. There are a great number of smaller garden irrigation systems available now and they are very efficient and recommended. In the vegetable garden although the season is coming to an end, there is still time to sew spring cabbage, Chinese cabbage and lettuces, peas, French beans, carrots and radish. There is still time to plant your leek plants if you have not already done so. It is recommended by many to trim the roots and the top leaves of the leek plant before planting. In my opinion this is
not necessary as it serves no practical benefit. If growing broad beans, when they reach a good height with a lot of flower it is a good idea to pinch the tops out to discourage black fly. Black fly and green fly (Aphids) like to feed on the soft young growth of plants and they feed on the sap at the same time and can transmit a virus from the leaves to the plant. It is now proven that growing organically using organic fertiliser rather than inorganic fertiliser tends to give the plant a thicker leaf tissue system making it more difficult for aphids to penetrate foliage which means that they look for the softer grown plants. In the flower garden, continue to dead head your annual and perennial plants and ensure your plants in containers are well watered and fed if you have not used controlled release fertiliser then sit back and enjoy your fruits of your hard work.
A quote to remember... “My wife is a water sign. I am an earth sign. Together, we make mud.” Rodney Dangerfield

Food & Drink
With the sun highly likely to make a strong appearance this summer, it’s time to ditch those cold weather dishes, and trade them in for the light dishes...
perfect for those bikini bodies
Summer Recipes Hoorah! Summer is finally upon us! And what better way to welcome summer, than to introduce the summer eating and those long summer BBQ days!
Can money or assets be protected in a new relationship? Many couples bring assets or money into their marriage that they wish to protect in the event of a relationship breakdown. Nobody wants to think about what happens if a relationship ends unhappily, but preparation can prevent financial loss and arguments at what will be a very stressful time – a bit like an insurance policy. Prenuptial agreements are prepared and signed before the wedding. Both parties should obtain independent legal advice on the terms and legal meaning of the agreement and it should be prepared as early as possible before the wedding itself (ideally 3 months). A pre-nuptial agreement is not automatically legally binding in England & Wales but the views of the court are changing and each case is considered on its own individual circumstances. A pre-nuptial agreement shows what each party intended to happen if they were to ever separate and it provides more protection than having no written agreement at all.
For those of you whose summer means an abundance of BBQ’s, we’ve included our favourite BBQ dish that we found too good to not include, after making it for the past 2 years, it’s our BBQ Chicken Burgers.
BBQ Chicken Burgers Ingredients: 4 skinless boneless chicken breasts, 4 rashers bacon, 4 burger buns, lettuce, tomato, red onion. For the sauce: 4 tbsp tomato ketchup, 4 tbsp brown sauce, 2 tsp clear honey. Recipe: 1. Make the marinade for the chicken by adding the sauces together in a large bowl. Leave some spare and to the side.
Next up, it’s one for those of you whose summer is all about the cold food, tomatoes, salads, the light options and the quick on-the-go. While the tomatoes are ripe, and the peppers are crisp and juicy, allow yourself to indulge slightly with the addition of diced succulent chicken breast, grilled for 20 minutes, tossed into the salad and topped with a flavour of your favourite dressing!
Grilled Chicken Salad Ingredients: 2 boneless chicken breast halves, 1 large red pepper, ½ red onion, whole lettuce, cherry tomatoes, salad dressing, grated cheese. Recipe: 1. Preheat grill or BBQ 2. Lightly oil the grill pan or BBQ plate. 3. Grill the chicken for approximately 10 minutes on each side, or until completely cooked. 4. Remove from heat, leave to cool and then dice. 5. In a large bowl toss together the chicken, lettuce, peppers, onion, tomatoes and any other optional ingredients. Add grated cheese to top. 6. Pour on the salad dressing of your choice (Cedar dressing is a great choice) and serve!
2. Slice halfway into the chicken and open it up, flatten it down slightly with your hand.
BBQ Banana Boat And finally, it’s time to treat yourself! Is the BBQ still hot? We’ve the perfect desert option! Take a juicy ripe banana and fill it with sweet treats, including chocolate spread and peanut butter, chuck it back on the BBQ and wait for the delicious smell of banana and chocolate. Open it up, grab a spoon and you’re good to enjoy!
BBQ Banana Boat Ingredients: 1 banana, chocolate spread, peanut butter, marshmallows, chocolate chips (or chunks), aluminium foil. Recipe: 1. Peel a section off of a banana, but do not fully remove it as you will need the peel later. 2. Cut the peeled section out of the banana, but don’t cut all the way through. 3. Add the Nutella and peanut butter and optional toppings. (Marshmallows and chocolate chips are good)
3. Toss the chicken into the bowl full of marinade to coat
4. Put the peel back into place and wrap the banana in aluminium foil.
4. Barbeque the chicken for about 10 minutes, or until completely cooked.
5. Let the bananas sit on the BBQ for 3-5 minutes.
5. Cook the bacon at the same time as the chicken 6. Assemble burger with lettuce, onion and tomato and serve with a dollop of the spare sauce.

e s n a d Tu studios If you are looking for fun summer holiday activities Tu Danse Studios offer full day workshops from their Newark Road studios for children age 4-12. 24th July - Beauty & The Beast (for ages 4-8) Singing, dance and fun craft activities from this tale as old as time.
I was thinking...
Probably the most common animals I see are the pigeons that frequent the middle of the roads for some unknown reason, only to take off and fly straight at me as I drive near them. Joining the pigeons on the road are of course the hedgehogs, however since they lack the ability to fly, their stays on our roads are often slightly more permanent than the pigeons. But these are the animals everyone sees all the time, so what else calls Stanground home? If you frequent the dark streets on the way home from the pub at night as often as I do, you may have seen a few of our urban foxes creeping about, scaring the resident cats. But where Stanground really shines, is down by the river.
BLOG
Here on the water we have the traditional overly aggressive swans, who are obviously compensating for something, families of ducks swimming in a line, and moorhens and coots paddling around in the reeds. But if I sit down for a while, I’m likely to see a heron searching for a garden pond in which to find lunch and maybe even a grebe popping up

I’ll admit, as I thought about the biodiversity in Stanground it gave me quite a happy feeling that we still have so many things running, flying and scuttling around. I’m sure there’s many more that I’ve missed mentioning, due to the sheer amount of animals that call this place home alongside us. Unfortunately this happy feeling was ruined completely when I returned home from work this evening to discover my cat had eaten the steak off of my kitchen side that I was planning for my dinner.

But all of those places require a walk to get to, and that’s just not the kind of person I am, there’s plenty in my own back garden. While I might not see them outside myself very often, I’m often treated to a close up view of a frog or mouse, delivered personally by my cat at the most inopportune of times. As I gaze across the weeds currently decorating my lawn I see flashes of yellow and black darting between them. Thankfully most of the time these flashes are friendly bees and not the hate filled devil spawn that are wasps, which ironically make a bee line straight for your head as soon as you step anywhere near them.

Fabulous new fairytale film makes a brilliant workshop. Come and let your hair down at this fabulous workshop. Lots of dancing, games and craft activities...with a very special guest. All of the above workshops are held from 10am-3pm daily and cost £20. A packed lunch is needed.
With the recent announcement from the city council that certain areas of the city are to be left to grow freely as a “nature haven”, including our very own Tenter Hill, it got me thinking about wildlife that I’ve seen in Stanground.

Consumer Advice
Nuisance calls:
Crackdown planned Dear readers, the majority of us have experienced nuisance unsolicited calls and, as a result of pressure being put on the Government by consumer groups, thankfully they have now launched a new Action Plan to tackle this menace which includes the following:1: The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will now be able to take action against calls that are classed as ‘annoyance’ rather than ‘substantial distress’; this means far more calls will be covered. 2. Ofcom and the ICO will share information on rogue companies, leading to more fines. 3. The Ministry of Justice are currently consulting on whether PPI cold callers should face fines of up to 20% of their annual turnover. 4. The Government has asked Richard Lloyd, Executive Director of Which? (the consumer champion), to lead a task force reviewing how people consent to receiving marketing calls.
Advice To avoid unsolicited telephone calls, members of the public are encouraged to remove their personal details from the public arena. The following will help:Register free with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) Once registration is complete telemarketers are legally bound not to call you. Registration takes about a month to become effective and can be made online at www. tpsonline.org.uk or via telephone on 0845 070 0707. Electoral Registers - Each year, electoral registration forms are sent to all homes in the UK. There is a legal requirement to complete these forms, which list all of the people living at your address on 15 October. A new electoral register is published on 01 December each year. The electoral register is a list of the names and addresses of everyone who is eligible to vote. There are two versions of the electoral register:-
