Sculpture Parks

stangroundcommunity By Rachael Leverton

The sculpture parks and trails of England are a rather wellkept secret. They are found all over the country and are great places to visit and introduce the kids to real art They are also good introductions to for anyone who is curious about art but feels they would be a bit out of their depth in a gallery. You can take a picnic and the children can run around. Many are free, or very cheap to enter. Each sculpture park is different in character depending on the surrounding countryside. Why not have a day outdoors and take in some culture at the same time? Our picks of the parks are: Yorkshire Sculpture Park – with pieces by Elisabeth Frink, Barbara Hepworth and Antony Gormley New Art Centre, Wiltshire – set in beautiful lovingly planted gardens.

Burghley House and Gardens, Stamford – My children loved this when they were tiny. There is an additional garden of surprises with quirky water sculptures that children can play in. Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail, Gloucestershire – 20 sculptures set along a trail which takes about three hours to walk round. The Pride of the Valley Sculpture Park, Surrey – An enormous number of sculptures, and a varied landscape including lakes and woodland. Broomhill Art and Sculpture Garden, Devon – More than 300 sculptures in 10 acres of land!

Summer Meadows One of the greatest summer pleasures is a languid stroll through a meadow brim full of wafting wildflowers on a balmy summer's day ... Buttercups beaming their bright yellow-gold glow, tall grasses swaying gently in the breeze with bees buzzing and pollen gathering from the nectar rich flowers. e time to see them as from July onwards they will start to be cut and the seeds harvested. Across the county some of the Wildlife Trust nature reserves include gorgeous meadows in a variety of locations – from long walks with wide vistas along rivers with flower-rich grasslands, sand martins, swallows and swifts feeding over the river and wheeling around the old bridges. Meadow pipits, sky larks and banded demoiselles are also commonly seen in the meadows along with conspicuous butterflies, bees, beetles and moths making the most of the vast array of nectar, pollen and lush plant growth to feed on.

Old grasslands have become scarce and many are now mostly surrounded by arable fields, yet still retain a glimpse of what a former landscape would have looked like, such as the meadow at Upwood Meadows. Buttercups are currently dominating meadows, especially in damper places, with added yellows from hay or yellow rattle, as well as hawk-bits. Other plants of purples, pinks and reds are either ending or beginning their flowering such as purple or green-winged orchids, as well as blood reds of great burnet, pinks of ragged robin. Most tall white plants are currently ox-eye daisy, but frothy flowered dropwort, meadow sweet, sneeze-wort will soon be competing with the taller plants such as meadow-rue and narrow leaved water-dropwort.

Peterborough Dementia Resource Centre prepares for Saturday opening Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Resource Centre for Peterborough is opening its doors on Saturday 15 July to give free advice to anyone with questions about dementia. Staff will be on hand from 10am – 2pm to offer information, support and advice. The Alzheimer’s Society team are particularly keen to welcome people affected by dementia who are unable to access our services during normal office hours. Kevin Bowyer, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager for Peterborough, said: “We really hope that people can come along to our Information Day to find out about the services we provide for people affected by dementia. Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community yet far too many people with the

condition are left feeling isolated and lonely and unable to access vital services. This Saturday opening could be a chance for people who are usually at work to access and seek information on services available to them.” The Dementia Resource Centre is a one-stop shop for advice, information and support, ensuring people living with dementia and their carers in Peterborough are able to get the help they need in everyday life. Dementia Resource Centre, 441 Lincoln Road, Millfield, Peterborough PE1 2PE (entrance 5 York Road, PE1 3BP)

If would like any further information regarding the Saturday opening please call the Dementia Resource Centre on 01733 893853. The charity is also looking for volunteers locally – for more information please call Debbie Holmes on 01733 893853.

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so, email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.

Question

I was made redundant from my job on 1 March 2016 and I received a termination package of £25,000. I was then re-employed by the same company on 1 November 2016, but was made redundant from that job too on 1 March 2017. I was paid a further redundancy payment of £10,000 when I left in March 2017. Does the £30,000 redundancy exemption apply to each payment I received?

Answer

I'm afraid not! Since your employer remained unchanged you are only entitled to one £30,000 exemption. The whole of the first payment of £25,000 is exempt, but only £5,000 of the second payment. You will be taxed on the remaining £5,000 in 2016/17.

Due to recent successful driving tests Willow Driver Training now has lesson times available for new pupils.

Reform of Landlord’s Taxation?

The government’s plans to allow landlords to use the cash basis for tax purposes were confirmed in the 2017 Spring Budget, but although the proposed legislation was included in Finance Bill 2017, it did not appear in the much reduced Finance Act 2017, which received Royal Assent on 27 April 2017. It is likely that the proposals have been temporarily shelved, pending the outcome of the General Election, and are expected to reappear in a second Finance Bill later this year. If the provisions are subsequently enacted, they are expected to apply retrospectively from 6 April 2017, i.e. for the current tax year. Up to and including 2016-17, profits of a property business must be calculated in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice (GAAP), commonly referred to as the accruals basis. Although this remains the case for certain landlords (including companies, LLPs, corporate firms, and trustees of trusts), if the Finance Bill 2017 provisions are enacted, the position for 2017-18 onwards will be more complicated. The general rule is that the cash basis must be used. However, this is subject to some exceptions and there will be scope for the individual to elect to continue using the accruals basis if they so wish. The new property allowance will remove some landlords from income tax, whilst for others, it will provide a deduction from profits of £1,000. We will report on this after the election and when further details are known.

Dates to remember - July 2017 1 July 2017 Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 30 September 2016. 6 July 2017 Filing deadline for submitting forms 2016-2017 P11D and P11D(b) to HMRC and the employees must receive their copy of the P11D. 7 July 2017 Due date for filing and payment of VAT for the period ended 31 May 2017, unless you submit a paper return then the date is 30 June 2017. 31 July 2017 Due date for the second payment on account for the tax year ended 5 April 2017. Monthly dates: 19th of the month: Due date for postal payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions and on-line filing deadline for CIS300 monthly return to HMRC. 22nd of the month: Due date for electronic payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions to HMRC.

Drinks

wildlife

As June leads into summer, we often experience periods of drought ...

all round T

ravellers are warned to carry bottles of water with them on the London Underground, bird baths are regularly filled and allotments and gardens are watered to keep plants growing. Spare a thought though for bees, butterflies and other bugs as they too need to drink. Providing that drink is in fact easy to do. Sink a plant saucer into the ground, so that the edge is virtually flush with the soil, this enables easy access for the bugs that cannot fly. Partially fill the saucer with pebbles, this has two big advantages: it provides a way out of the water for bugs that fall in and reduces the rate of evaporation. Then, fill the saucer to the brim with water and

you have created the perfect, bug drinking trough. Just remember to keep topping it up, else it will run dry in really hot weather. June is also one of the best months for wildflower shows, so food for pollinators is in abundance in our gardens and common land. Many flowers will extend their flowering season, provided they are regularly dead headed, but this is also the time to think ahead to be sure that, as we move through July into August and beyond, that there will still be sufficient food for our pollinator friends. Thistles and their relatives are good late season flowers as are Michaelmas daisies, Tansy and Yarrow. Sadly, late flowering pansies are of little value to pollinators as they do not require pollination, so provide no rewards. Buddleia is also a great late season source of nectar for butterflies, though it is also an extremely invasive coloniser and it’s best to deadhead before seeds set; this also leads to secondary and even tertiary flowering of the cut stems. St John's Church

The bells of St John's Church The current keeper of our bells and head of the ringing team is Graham Hill who learned the skill here in Stanground. He would like to offer you then chance to have a go at ringing the bells, just for fun, or maybe to see if you would like to take up ringing as a hobby. You can have a go if you come along to St John’s on a Thursday evening at 6.30pm when the ringers practice. Or, get in touch through our website. All ages can ring and it could be a great thing to enjoy with friends or for people to bring children and grandchildren.

I look forward to meeting you. Revd Anne Shorter (Vicar of Stanground)

This treasure is a peal of six bells put in place by local people over the years and lovingly cared for through the generations. English bell ringing is unique because we are the only country where ‘change ringing’ takes place and there is nothing quite like the sound of bells ringing out across the countryside. Ringing the changes takes a team of people who work together to learn this special skill and it is great fun to be part of. We hear the bells of St John’s at weddings and on important days and often for church services. The last big peal was rung on St George’s Day.

Stanground Academy continues to be a 'good' school Following an inspection that took place on 4 April 2017, Ofsted has judged the overall effectiveness of the Stanground Academy, sponsored by the Greenwood Academies Trust (GAT), to be “good”.

O

fsted carried out a short (one day) inspection as the Academy was judged ‘good’ when it was last inspected in February 2014. Inspectors met with senior leaders, representatives from the GAT, teaching staff and parents. They also visited lessons where they talked to pupils and examined their work. The inspectors concluded that the leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the Academy since the last inspection. The report praises the senior leadership team at the Academy as well as the support and challenge from the Trust. The inspectors found that despite pupils entering the Academy with levels of prior attainment which are significantly below the

national average, they leave the Academy broadly in line with the national average which indicates that they make good progress overall. The inspectors looked at how well the academy promotes well-being and safety and concluded that “safeguarding and the well-being of pupils is clearly a priority for the school” and that “pupils are taught very well about how to keep themselves safe”. Parents will be particularly keen to read that “pupils believe that members of staff listen to their concerns and will act on them”. The inspectors also explored some issues in relation to examination results last year and were satisfied that the Academy has taken the appropriate actions to ensure that pupils in Year 11 are in line with their targets for progress. The

“I am pleased that Ofsted agreed with the

judgements of senior leaders and found that the Stanground Academy has maintained its ‘good’ rating. I would like to thank staff at the Academy, who are committed and enthusiastic, as well as our pupils and their families who have supported us to maintain our high standards over the last three years. “I feel confident that we are well prepared to continue to move forward and become an ‘outstanding’ Academy in the future.” James Scarrott, Principal inspectors also took the opportunity to speak with students in the sixth form who were full of praise for their teachers and told the inspector that the support they receive in preparing for the next stage of their educational career is “amazing”.

One of our many topics recently was ‘people who help us.’ We had many fun activities that included dressing up in different uniforms, rescuing our toys from shaving foam and colouring firemen. We were also very lucky as one of our parents came in to talk about their profession. The children loved listening and finding out all about the different jobs. The Baby Unit children been very busy enjoying the sunshine, creating crab handprints and pretending the animals are in a sea made out of jelly We would like to say a big 'goodbye' to our pre-schoolers and wish them all the best in their new schools. It has been lovely watching them grow and achieve during their time at Little Acorns and they will all be missed greatly. The children put a lot of work into performing a lovely concert for all the parents and then also enjoyed a party.

This month, we take a look at available options for caring for your pet while you are on holiday. It's wise to plan well in advance if you can, to make sure that you have the best choices on offer for your pet.

With or without you

Plan ahead if you're going away Plan in advance Pet services are busy in the summer months, whether pet-friendly accommodation, pet travel specialists, pet sitters, boarding kennels or other holiday-related pet activities. Sort out your plans as early as possible to give yourself the widest range of options and the best value. Taking your pet with you is easier than ever The recognition of the 'pet pound' has led to more pet friendly holiday destinations in the UK and abroad. If planning to leave the UK, you do need to get a pet passport for your dog or cat, with rabies vaccinations being given at least three weeks before your departure date, but once you get the paperwork in place, there are few restrictions on where you can go. If travelling with your pet, do your research first Think carefully about what will be involved with your pet when you are away and make sure that you have checked on the important details. Is the accommodation definitely suitable for your particular type of pet? Where will they sleep at

night? What will you do with your pet if you are engaged in other holiday activities? Make sure that there are no surprises when you reach your destination. Don’t forget your pet’s health care Check your pet insurance details to find out what sort of cover you will have at your destination (are trips overseas included?) Are there local diseases that you should be aware of? Do you need to take extra preventive care? Talk to your local vet before you go if you are not sure. Carefully consider how your pet will travel You may have heard about pet deaths while being carried in airline cargo. This may be very rare, but make sure that your pet’s comfort and safety are fully taken into account while travelling. If you are not taking your pet with you Boarding kennels and catteries are the traditional form of pet care over holiday periods, and a well run kennel can be a positive, enjoyable experience for a dog or cat. Plan as far as possible in advance. If using kennels, double check that your pets' vaccines are up to date, especially for Kennel

Cough. If vaccines have gone out of date, you could be refused entry to the boarding premises. Having a pet minder in a home environment can be a good alternative. Many people now like the idea of finding a home environment as an alternative to kennels. You may wish to ask a friend or relative to care for your pet, and this can work well, especially for independent-minded cats, or ociable dogs who are easy for people to look after in their own homes. Do remember, however, that this is a big responsibility and a burden of care. Assistance of this type should not be taken for granted: a token box of chocolates from the airport on the way home doesn’t cover it. Internet-enabled pet sitters are easier, cheaper and safer than ever 'Sharing economy' type of websites now connect pet owners with dog-loving members of the public who are happy to mind pets in their own home. This is a growing trend that started in the USA a decade ago, with Europe now beginning to catch up. Wishing you and your pets a great holiday!

Home from home

R

The alternative to kennels

un by Shirley Lilley and her dogs Berry and Bobby, Wagging Tails give dogs their very own holiday as the only guest in the home of a specially selected dog carer. All Wagging Tails carers are experienced current or former dog owners, who are at home

kennels, she fully understands the dilemma many of her fellow owners face when leaving their dogs to go on holiday. “Our family doesn’t feel complete without a four legged friend or two! We now have Bobby, our beautiful rescue Retriever and Berry,

We offer the assurance of a safe and loving ‘Home from Home’family holiday for your dog within the family home of a fully vetted, licensed and insured carer. during the day, have been licenced by their local council and are fully insured. Shirley, who lives in Whittlesey, near Peterborough, has been a dog owner for most of her life and, having endured breaks in the past where she had no option but to use

our very excitable CockerSpaniel. Our home wouldn’t be the same with out them." Leaving the dogs in kennels has always been a stressful experience for them and us. At the time we didn’t realise that there was such a wonderful home from home alternative.

A new business has launched in the Peterborough area offering dog owners a home based alternative to kennels Our aim at Wagging Tails is to provide the best holiday home for our four legged guests and provide peace of mind for their owners. This allows you to leave your four-footed family member within a loving home and enjoy your well earned holiday.” Shirley is looking for potential carers who would like to welcome dogs into their homes for a holiday. Many Wagging Tails carers describe the role being much like that of a grandparent  – all the fun – then you get to give them back and look forward to the next visit! As well as the companionship of the dogs they are looking after, carers also receive a small payment for looking after the dogs in their care.

Simple tips to avoid the

post-holiday burglary blues Whether you’ve booked a week or two in the sun or have planned a short family break – don’t forget to add home security to your money, passport and tickets checklist.

M

ake sure it’s not a case of out of sight, out of mind when it comes to protecting your property while you

are away. We can all greatly reduce the risk of burglary by taking a few simple, security measures to help make our home less attractive to thieves. It is well known that most burglars are opportunists and target homes and businesses that offer the least risk of being caught. Whether you’re going away for a day or a few weeks, you should take steps to make your home look occupied. A dark home in the evenings and uncollected mail is a sign to burglars that no one is home.

Before you go on holiday:  Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries  Set up automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark  Register for the Royal Mail’s ‘keepsake’ service  Move valuable items out of view of windows  Cut front and back lawns and trim back plants  Don’t discuss holiday plans on social media  Ask a trusted neighbour to watch over your home whilst you’re away Also, there are steps you can take to keep your home safe and secure, even if you are simply spending an evening entertaining alfresco or are using a sunny day to get to grips with the gardening.

If you are at home, but are spending time outdoors:  Ensure all windows and doors are closed and locked  If you are switching between front and back gardens, don’t leave lawn mowers or power tools unattended  Make sure you lock all gates and sheds when you return indoors  Keep the door chain in the front door  Keep all valuables and keys out of sight and out of reach of doors and windows  Keep items that could be used to break into your property such as: ladders, tools and wheelie bins stored safely away  Use pea shingle on driveways or under windows, as it crunches loudly when stepped on If you are considering installing or upgrading any CCTV security/lighting or alarm systems – or even changing the locks – Safe Local Trades has many reputable traders who can help.

Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval. Go to www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone 01733 530019

hen powering up your BBQs and putting out the garden furniture for the summer season, be sure to take note of our top tips below to ensure you have a fun and safe summer in the garden. •

If cooking outdoors, always check barbecues over after winter storage, keep them on level ground and ensure they are sited away from sheds, fences, overhanging foliage and property

Keep children and garden games well away from the cooking area and never leave the barbecue unattended

If you have a bonfire, build it well away from buildings, tents or other flammable objects and make sure it is properly out when you leave

When out in the countryside, extinguish cigarettes properly and dispose of them responsibly – never throw a lit cigarette into a field or wooded area.

Don’t forget to stay safe around our county’s waterways and if you see someone in trouble in water, call 999 immediately with clear details of your location

When out camping or using a tent, never use candles inside or nearby and always discourage smoking nearby. Never cook inside a tent.

BEER L FESTIVA

Peterborough Beer Festival 2017 celebrates the 40th year of CAMRA beer festivals in Peterborough, they will be extending their opening times on both the Friday and Saturday until 11.30pm which will enable festival visitors to enjoy a truly memorable August Bank Holiday weekend. The festival runs for 5 days from Tuesday - Saturday and will hold live musical entertainment every evening. There will be a good range of food available at PBF both bar snacks and main meals. Full details here: (www.peterborough-camra.org.uk/ index.php?module=pbfvendors) This year the PBF is hoping for a great attendance with it being their big 40. They feel that PBF has been held in great affection by residents of the city for many years now, in large part due to the number of local unpaid volunteers who staff it each year. PBF’s social media is filled with messages from people telling us that PBF is their favourite annual event and they genuinely look forward to it. It's often the place where friends who haven't seen each other for a while bump into one another unexpectedly PBF is a family friendly festival. As the festival is held on the Embankment there is plenty of green space for children to play, supervised of course, and under 18's are free (admittance only with an adult). There are a variety of alcoholic alternatives to beer as well as soft drinks bar. For the older children there are pub games and a funfair. 20 stanground gazette July 2017 www.stangroundgazette.co.uk

Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 0 mins Serves: 2

Ingredients:

Ingredients

120ml/ 4fl oz milk 1 tsp instant espresso powder 4 tbsps good quality chocolate syrup 6 tbsp caramel sauce, plus more for garnish if required 300g / 11oz good quality vanilla ice cream 4 tbsp Coffee liqueur (optional) Fresh whipped cream Chocolate-covered espresso beans to garnish

150ml / 5 fl oz milk 2 tbsp peppermint syrup OR 2 tbsp mint liqueur 400g / 14 oz peppermint ice cream Sprigs of fresh mint to garnish

Method Combine milk espresso powder, chocolate syrup, caramel and liqueur (if using) into a blender and mix. Add ice cream and blend until smooth. Garnish with whipped cream and espresso beans (and caramel sauce if desired).

Method Pour the milk and peppermint syrup into a food processor or blender and use a slow setting to combine them. Add the peppermint ice cream and blend until smooth. Pour the mixture into tall glasses and decorate with sprigs of fresh mint. It’s really that simple! It also works brilliantly with mint and choc chip ice cream. Grate dark chocolate curls over the top before serving.

Chocolate Fondant Tart Preparation time: 45 mins (plus chilling time) Cooking time: 30 mins Serves: 6-8 Ingredients Pastry 100g/3½oz plain flour 50g/1¾oz icing sugar 50g/1¾oz chilled butter, diced Yolk from 1 large egg 1 tbsp water Filling 100g/3½oz butter 150g/5½oz dark chocolate (70%) 150g/5½oz golden caster sugar 75g/3oz plain flour 6 medium eggs To serve: Icing sugar, strawberries or raspberries, cream

Summer shakes are not just for the kids

Simple summer indulgence

Method For the pastry  Place the flour and icing sugar in a large bowl.  Rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.  Add the egg yolk and water and mix quickly so that it comes together to form a firm dough.  Wrap in cling film and leave to rest in the fridge for about 30 minutes.  Preheat the oven to 200C/ Gas 6 (180C fan).  Dust the work surface with flour and then roll out the pastry to form a circle about 5cm/2in larger than your flan tin. Line the tin with the pastry. Pop it into the fridge to chill for a further 15 minutes.  You now need to blind-bake the pastry. To do this prick the base of the pastry with a fork then line the pastry case with a circle of greaseproof paper and fill with baking beans (these are ceramic beads, but you can use lentils or dried

beans if you don't have any). Bake the pastry for 10 minutes, or until just lightly golden-brown, then remove the paper and the beans and return the tart to the oven to cook for a further 5-7 minutes, or until golden-brown and dried out. For the filling  Melt the butter in a medium pan over a low heat, then add the chocolate and stir until melted, smooth and glossy. Remove from the heat and beat in the sugar and flour, then beat in the eggs, one at a time.  Place the pastry case on a baking tray. Pour the chocolate mixture into the pastry case, filling it almost to the top then place in the oven. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until just set around the edges and still slightly wobbly in the centre.  Remove from the oven. You can serve it warm with raspberries or strawberries, or allow it to cool and dust with icing sugar.

The Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Club For the past 5 years we have held a 6-week Saturday morning Introductory Training Course. This year we are starting on 5 August at 9.30am to introduce newcomers to our most enjoyable game.

I

n the past, these introductory courses have proved very successful and over the years have resulted in well over 100 people coming along to give it a try. Most have found it to be pleasurable and you do not have to worry about the weather – a warm welcome always awaits you. As well as gentle exercise, bowling brings a new challenge and something to do over the winter months. We have over 250 bowling members and one third of these are ladies. This is a sport where finesse is more important than force and where the ‘gentle sex’ can comfortably ‘hold their own’! If you come to our Introductory Course we will provide all the equipment necessary and all we ask is that you bring along a pair of flatsoled footwear, (we have 5 separate rinks each costing over £10,000 so we must look after them). Each rink measures 40 yards long and 6 yards wide, and they will be staffed

by experienced club members who will show you the way. By the end of the 6-week course you will know whether this is for you and decide whether to become a club member. For the first season, new bowlers will have their own leagues so that they start on a level footing and are not overwhelmed by those who have been playing for years. The main season begins midSeptember through to mid-April. During this time we run 19 internal leagues as well as enjoying weekend friendly fixtures with other clubs. We also run 9 individual competitions on a knock-out basis throughout the season. Bowling sessions are for two hours 15 minutes and begin at 9.30am, 11.45 am, 2.00 pm and 4.30 pm, as well as evening sessions at 7.00 pm. In addition to all these, there are daily opportunities to book a rink for extra practice and training. This year we fully re-furbished our sports hall. It is currently used for table tennis, walking football, kurling

and carpet bowls. The hall is available for hire for other sports activities or club functions. Also, there is a social side to the club with events usually on Saturday nights, including quiz nights, Beetle Drives, Bingo and barbecues in the summer - when we run a limited programme according to demand. We have a fully licenced bar together with a good range of hot drinks from our in-house dispenser. With over 260 members, we are probably the biggest sports club in Whittlesey and are well known to be a very friendly bunch! Why not give it a try? If you wish, you can come and have a preview beforehand on any Tuesday or Thursday morning from 9.30 am, or on a Friday evening from 7.00 pm. Introduce yourselves and see the rinks in full swing.

During the summer, the club office may not always be manned, so, if you would like any further information we have an answering facilit y on 01733 202209. We will get back to you if you leave your name and contact number. See our advertisement below.
