VetSavers Pet Shop & Vets opens at Cardea
VetSavers opens its second Pet Shop and Vets in Peterborough this week, completing the parade of shops at the new Cardea development in Peterborough. The shop unit has been fully fitted out and now displays a large range of toys, bedding, training aids and other pet accessories, for cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters and even our feathered friends outdoors. It also stocks pet food ranges Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Iams, James Wellbeloved and Natures Menu. Veterinary Nursing Assistant, Charlotte Thirtle who works at VetSavers in Cardea said “As a local resident I’m so thrilled that VetSavers are bringing their great value services here and can’t wait to start meeting lots of Cardea’s four-legged residents”. Charlotte has five guinea pigs, a three legged cat, a hamster, a leopard gecko and recently added a puppy to the family too. So it’s safe to say that she has plenty of first hand experience with many species as a pet owner, as well as a veterinary professional and says she is very much looking forward to welcoming anyone with a pet related query, through VetSavers doors. The Pet Shop and Vets has some fantastic opening offers including 25% off any Royal Canin Lifestage food. Plus any clients registering pets at the Vets throughout May and June, will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win a years supply of Royal Canin pet food – a prize that could be worth over £650! The Vets will offer all the usual GP services such as vaccinations, consults, ongoing care for existing conditions etc… Clients will also benefit from local referral services at Broadway Veterinary Hospital in Peterborough for cases that require hospitalisation, intensive care, Ophthalmic or Orthopaedic care. “Even before we opened this week, we have been made to feel very welcome by many of the local residents as well as the other local businesses here. We are already enjoying being part of such a positive and proactive community and are very excited about the future here” said Marketing Manager Julie Howard when on site assisting with the set up the Pet Shop last week.

City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra
SUMMER CONCERT Saturday, 14 June A wonderful concert characterised by energy and passion, from three composers at their absolute best, is promised by the City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra. The concert on Saturday, June 14, at 7.30pm, features works by Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns and Holst, and will be staged at The Voyager Academy, Mountsteven Avenue, Walton. Passion and brilliance are there in equal measure in the wonderful Saint-Saëns cello concerto, which is regarded as the very greatest cello concerto of all time. The soloist is James Halsey, also plays cello with the Bingham String Quartet. Mendelssohn’s whirling 3rd Symphony, ‘The Scottish’, is full of tremendous panache, while Holst’s popular St Paul’s Suite includes the famous tune ‘Greensleeves’. Maestro Steve Bingham has a particular affinity with Mendelssohn’s music, which will bring a concert of many moods and be perfect for a summer evening. Tickets are £12.50 and £10.50 (concessions) and are available on the door or at
www.cpso.org.uk
As with the VetSavers practice at Netherton, clients will be able to take advantage of discounted annual preventative care, paid for monthly by direct debit if they sign pets up to their Healthy Paws Plans, as well as many other client promotions from VetSavers. The Pet Shop is also offers to order in any food or products clients may want that aren’t currently stocked, with next day collection available on weekdays. VetSavers Cardea are currently opening 9am – 7pm weekdays, however plan to be open all weekend by June for pet owners convenience, adding to the already vibrant atmosphere at Cardea shopping centre. Dance for young people... Jenna Tudor formed Danzfusion; helping its students become talented dancers, confident and well rounded young people, based in Peterborough.
Recently, eight students competed in a regional street dance competition. It was their first time competing at an event and was exciting for all involved. Group “Fusion 8” came 4th in their category and qualified to represent the UK and compete at the UDO Worlds street dance championships, held in Glasgow this summer. The competition is a massive opportunity enabling the girls to compete and develop as dancers by taking part in workshops with judges and leading dance professionals. Cost is around £600 for each parent including travel, accommodation, costume and passes for the event so events are being arranged to support the parents. There will be a two and a half hour Zumba session, Saturday 28th June, at Stanground Sports Centre, running from 1:00-3:30pm, costing £7 and is for anyone 13+. Profits go towards getting to the championships so come along, show support and burn a few hundred calories too! Contact Jenna for details. - 07743073420.

by Kate, Cardea Association
Well there’s plenty going on over here in sunny Cardea at the moment! As you can see the playing fields have really taken shape and the basketball courts are being used which is great to see, children are zipping around on bikes and scooters and we have an ever growing number of dog walkers using our green areas. All of which are fantastic for our new community but we do have one downside… Due to the fact that we are still developing our roads and that the recreational areas are unadopted by the PCC, it means that we do not have litter bins! Therefore, we would urge everyone to carry ‘poo bags’ to clear up after their dogs and for the users of the playing fields and basketball courts to either take their drinks bottles and other litter home with them or use the bins at Morrison’s . It really would help us members of Cardea Residents Association who are trying to keep on top of the litter situation we have no other service clearing up over here! Talking of the CRA we are holding our first Picnic in the Park on Saturday 2nd August , it’s looking to be real family fun with a tug of war competition as the main event, so look out for updates on Face Book “My Cardea UK” , the Morrison’s notice board and Fishtastic at Cardea. We also have our monthly Saturday coffee morning on June 21st again check out the same place for details. Also on Sunday June 1st St Michaels Church School is hosting our very first Church service as St Michaels from Mace Road Stanground bring the congregation to Cardea, of course everyone is welcome and I promise it will be a very family friendly service! You don’t have to live at Cardea to join us on any of our events so hopefully see you soon!
As our thoughts turn to an upcoming summer of sport, and praying for some Brazilian sunshine right here in Stanground, the Cardea Community Sports Association (CCSA) is already looking forward to a bright sporting future closer to home. We are a group of residents from Cardea and the surrounding Stanground area, that have come together to work with the local authority to manage the planned sports pavilion and grounds situated at Cardea. Our main aim is to utilise a purpose built Pavilion building and sports ground in a way that will encourage, promote and facilitate sporting activity for all in Cardea, the wider Stanground area and beyond. Our voluntary organisation was officially formed in November 2013 but we have been in talks with Peterborough City Council on the development of the land for around 3 years. On the 7 May we held a question and answer session at St. Michaels school on Cardea, for members of the community to hear more about what we are doing. We had a good turn out and were asked some really interesting questions. Everything from council funding to future fund raising, football matches to children’s parties and more were discussed. We are always looking for ideas and support to encourage participation in sport and other activities in our wider community. Contact details can be found on our website along with details of the questions raised at our q & a session.

Whittlesey Washes Ready, steady, go! The first phase of works between Ring’s End and Poplar House Farm began in July 2013 and will be completed in autumn 2014. The full project will be complete in November 2015. 2014 works programme • June-November: Stanground to Ball Bridge, Whittlesey • June-November: Green Wheel diverted • July 2014: Showground access works • July-November: Poplar House Farm- Bassenhally
Green Wheel diversion – 1 June 2014 While the works take place, it will be necessary for public safety to divert the Green Wheel cycleway between Ball Bridge in Whittlesey and Stanground. The Green Wheel will now be diverted from 1 June 2014 until 30 November 2014. This means we are able to keep the cycleway open for the May holidays. The diversion will be along the North Bank between Millennium Bridge and Peterborough as shown on the map overleaf.
Public footpath diversions The public footpath diversion will remain in place between Ring’s End and Poplar House Farm until December 2014. The public footpath has been diverted from the top of the bank to the bottom of the bank and is clearly marked out by fencing. This will also be the case between Poplar House Farm and Bassenhally from July 2014. Take care when using the diversion and keep dogs on a lead for the safety of your pet and construction staff.

- South Barrier Bank Works From 4 June 2014 we will be holding a weekly surgery for the community to come and find out more about the project and ask any questions. Our Public Liaison Officer, Monica will be available Wednesdays 10am – 12pm Whittlesey Town Council, Grosvenor House
Out and about In March we had the pleasure of visiting Year 6 pupils at Alderman Jacobs School in Whittlesey to talk about the project. We helped the children to understand flooding and how it can be managed. This then gave them the knowledge to manage a flooding scenario by designing their own flood defence systems.
Weekly surgery Community drop-in events The project team would like to extend a big thank you to all who visited our drop-in events and took the time to look at the work plans for the next two years. The events were well attended and very positive with many questions and problems addressed. If you were unable to attend the drop-in events and would still like to find out more about the project, please come along to the surgery events.
Our Public Liaison Officer Monica Stonham is available to deal with any questions you may have. Information boards have been installed at Stanground, Ball Bridge, Ring’s End and Poplar House Farm to keep you up to date.

Charity headshave
A brave colleague from Morrisons, Stanground, took on a hair-raising challenge at the weekend, shaving his precious locks to raise funds for Sue Ryder.
Adam Biggs said ‘goodbye’ to his long flowing hair in front of customers and colleagues as part of a day-long fundraiser for Morrisons national charity partner. Male colleagues at the Bellona Drive store also had their legs waxed for charity and gave their female colleagues makeovers, while a fundraiser from Sue Ryder, Thorpe Hall Hospice, was on hand to answer questions from customers and colleagues.
Adam suggested the head shave himself, as Sue Ryder is close to his heart, and it definitely provided some entertainment for colleagues and customers! Money raised through the Morrisons Raise a Smile partnership with Sue Ryder will fund new community services, family support teams and an online support community, providing the best possible care to people with life-limiting illnesses and support for their families.

Stanground Church All during Lent about 80 of us kept an extra plate on our kitchen tables and each of the 40 days we said a prayer for people in need, then we put some money onto the plate. We brought the plates back to church at Easter and when all the money was added up we found we had £700 to send to Christian Aid. (Christian Aid is not about helping Christians, but about Christians helping others.) Then in May we had Christian Aid Week and we did some more fundraising. This year the theme was ‘Helping heal the scars of war’. As our own soldiers leave Afghanistan we realise how long the shadows are that war creates and how it is the ordinary people who are the real sufferers. This is where charities like Christian Aid, Save and Children and other groups come in and carry on helping after the news cameras have gone. Thank you to everybody who took part in Christian Aid week this year. BACK TO SCHOOL! Now we look forward to Sunday 1st June at 11.15 at Cardea. St Michael’s Church School has invited us to hold a service in the school and to have a look around their amazing building. There is an invitation to anyone who would like to come, especially if you live in Cardea. It will be a fun service suitable for all ages. Hope to see you there!

Great news for
Stanground Pre-School Stanground Pre-School is very proud to announce that, following their Ofsted inspection in April, they have been rated as ‘Outstanding’ in all areas. The pre-school would like to give a huge ‘thank you’ to all children, parents, committee and staff, who worked together to make their preschool so special and such a happy and welcoming place to be. Manager Jane Watkin said, “It’s fantastic that Ofsted have recognised all the great effort from everyone involved in our lovely pre-school. We are all thrilled at this fabulous result!” Some notable quotes from Ofsted’s report are: “Caring, professional preschool”, “Children become confident, curious learners” and “make rapid progress towards the early learning goals”. Meanwhile, we continue to have lots of exciting times at Stanground Pre School. In March, we had lots of fun visiting Sacrewell Farm; all children and staff really enjoyed meeting the animals and having a bumpy tractor ride around the farm.
12
We are now looking forward to preparing our older children for their move to ‘big school’. We have several exciting events planned to look forward to, including a teddy bears’ picnic and a summer party. Stanground Pre-School offers a stimulating environment, where learning is fun. There are four highly experienced and qualified staff, who provide a safe, secure and welcoming place for children to begin their early years education. The pre-school currently has vacancies for children aged 3 and 4, with funding available, and is open every weekday morning, and each afternoon except Tuesdays, during the school term.
If you would like further details, to arrange a visit or trial session, please contact Jane Watkin on 07 749 514679 or stangroundpresch ool@gmail.com

Budding reporters at SHSCC take on the BBC! At Sir Harry Smith Community College, we like to try new things. Last year, we decided that we would like to try and become news reporters and a small group of students from Year 7-10, started to produce a College Newsletter. Since that day we have produced one newsletter every half-term, writing all of the stories and taking all of the photographs ourselves. Even the editing is done by us students! On Thursday 21st March this year, thousands of schools from around the UK joined together to make the day’s news for the BBC School Report Project. Our budding reporters were keen to show what we could do! In the morning we
turned up and started scouring the internet and newspapers for news stories. We then combined notes and prepared our scripts for a live video report in the afternoon. We rushed off to get everything ready, and then two of our news team presented the live broadcast on the BBC website. We then had all our written news stories uploaded to the school website. It was a very good day and everyone enjoyed it. We can’t wait for next year!

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools to open two Peterborough Academies The City of Peterborough Academy is a brand new Academy which opened in September 2013. Peterborough City Council refurbished and updated the former Hereward Community College buildings, costing £13 million, so that they now look and feel like a new school. Included are specialist rooms for science, technology, art and ICT. The Stanground Academy, which the GDFT took over in April 2012, has been completely rebuilt following a £24 million investment by Peterborough City Council. The new Academy buildings include a state-of-the-art teaching block with fully equipped specialist rooms for science, technology, art and ICT. There’s also a new dance
On Friday, 2 May, Lord Nash, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools, opened the new buildings for two Academies operated by the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust (GDFT).
studio plus, two new drama rooms and a dedicated sixth form centre. Barry Day, Chief Executive of the GDFT, said: “We are delighted that Lord Nash has agreed to formally open the buildings for these two Academies in Peterborough. “Our new City of Peterborough Academy received its first monitoring visit from the Department for Education (DfE) and they confirmed our belief that the Academy offers an outstanding education in all areas. “In addition, our Stanground Academy has recently been judged ‘good’ by Ofsted which is exceptional considering that the Academy has only been open
for a little over four terms and that the predecessor Stanground College had faced a significant number of challenges and was in an Ofsted category.
“These two new high quality learning environments offer young people in Peterborough an excellent educational experience and I am sure Lord Nash will enjoy his visits.” The City of Peterborough Academy and the Stanground Academy are two of five Academies in Peterborough which are sponsored by the GDFT. The Trust now has 24 open Academies in total.

The Heron As things seem rather quiet with our pubs this month, I have looked slightly further afield to bring you some pub gig listings for the next month - at pubs a mere stone’s throw from Stanground. Remember Landlords, if you have any news – please get in touch!
By Roz Wright
Rob & Meri at The Heron kept to schedule and had their grand opening over Easter. They have started holding live music on Friday evenings in the main bar, which kicked off with Velocity. We will keep you informed in this column and on the Stanground facebook page of other gigs. Meri intends to move the bands’ nights00 into their spacious function room once they have finished refurbishing it. The Heron are proud to have been accepted into the Oakham Ales ‘Oakademy of Excellence’ for their high standard of beer keeping. They stock a good selection of ales from local brewers including; Star Brewing Company: Meteor, Tydd Steam – Barn Ale, and Digfield’s – Fools Nook as their current guest ales, plus Oakham Ales: JHB, Adnams: Ghost Ship. On draft is; Symonds Cider, Fosters, Budweiser, John Smiths and Adnams Jack Beer (which is a British made dry hopped lager). Cider lovers can also get Westons Perry at £3 a pint.
I’ll keep updating you on what’s happening in your locals, if you have any pub news, please let me know by contacting:

I have my own small limited company - what is the level at which to pitch my monthly drawings to minimise my income tax and national insurance bills… whilst at the same time obtaining another qualifying tax year towards my State Pension contribution?

IfIf you you see see aa dog dog locked locked in in aa very very hot hot car car do do something something to to try try and and help help itit before before it’s it’s too too late. late.
Answer: The simple answer for the year to 5 April 2015 is to pay yourself a monthly sum of £663 (that’s £7,956 in a full year) which potentially can be done tax and NIC free. Extra sums could then potentially be paid by the company as dividends to you which do not attract NIC, wouldn’t trigger a personal tax liability for you as a shareholder up to the higher rate tax threshold. In a straightforward case dividends up to a further £30,500 or so could be paid to you which would see a total of almost £38,500 drawn out of your company over the course of the current tax year.
Tax Tips There’s something quite appealing about the words TAX and FREE when they appear next to one another in the same sentence. But under certain circumstances they can be a reality when it comes to the salary packages your business makes available to both your employees and to yourself! For example did you know that: There is an increasing range of benefits to be enjoyed tax-free…including mobile phones, interest free loans, parking, company shares, life cover etc Certain benefits lend themselves nicely to salary sacrifice arrangements which can leave both the employer and the employee better off for every year the arrangements are in place. A common example is pension contributions but others, such as company car schemes, the provision of bikes and childcare vouchers could also be used. One simple example: Harry (who is on a salary of £30,000 p.a.) pays £3,000 into an approved pension scheme each year with his employer paying another £3,000. Both parties agree to salary sacrifice Harry’s contributions with the result that he will in future only pay tax and national insurance on £27,000 saving around £800 each year.

Pets
Pet obesity by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre
We all love our pets, but what if we love them too much? Overfeeding is such a problem now that people are forgetting what pets should look like because they are so used to seeing obese pets. They become concerned that their pets are underweight, when in fact, they are the perfect weight. It’s easy for everyone to over indulge, and tempting for us to ‘treat’ our pets to human food, but this can be full of calories, even more than we should be having…so you can imagine what this might be doing to our pets! It’s not just the amount and type of food they eat that can affect their weight; there are other factors too: Age - Older dogs have a slower metabolism than younger dogs, so an age appropriate food is recommended. Breed - Some breeds are prone to weight gain; a light diet can help keep weight under control.
Having pets that are overweight not only stops them from doing things that come naturally and decreases their mobility, but can also have some more concerning associated health risks:
• • • •
Heart disease • Diabetes Respiratory distress High blood pressure Cancers • Joint Problems
Neuter status - Although animals that have been neutered are more likely to gain weight, this doesn’t mean you should not neuter them. Again, there are diets specifically designed for animals that have been neutered, that are calorie controlled so your pets don’t gain too much weight. Owners – Human food often has both too many calories and an incorrect nutritional balance for your pet. The harsh reality associated with obese pets is that they do not live as long, and as an owner, that is heartbreaking.

Is my pet obese? There are a few simple checks you can do yourself, but if you are still in doubt, visit your vet. Waist: You should be able to see your pet’s waist when you look down on it from above. Ribs: If you run your hands along the side of your pet you should easily be able to feel your pet’s ribs, and there should be no excess fat in this area. Belly: From the side, your pet’s belly should tuck up, and after the ribs there shouldn’t be too much of the ‘belly’ showing. Obesity is a preventable problem; from extra exercise, through cutting out fatty treats and human food, to calorie regulated food that you can purchase from your vets. No matter how far you think your pet’s obesity problem might have gone, there is always something you can do.

Park Farm Pumas U9 Blacks Park Farm Pumas U9 Blacks made the final of the Hereward cup but lost out to a well organised Bourne side. It was a valiant effort from a great young group of footballers but Bourn proved too strong on the day. The finals day was a very well organised affair with a Wembley style walk onto the pitch for both teams and the obligatory RESPECT handshake at the start of the game. Although the football didn’t go to plan the boys really enjoyed the experience and had loads of smiles when picking up their runners up awards. It was also great to see the mutual RESPECT held by both sets of players and supporters for both the winners and the runners up – a great day for football in the city and although we lost we hope Pumas have again made some new friends in football.

Home & Garden
June can be a lovely month on the garden calendar and you start to see the rewards of your earlier efforts. Your lawns look green and fresh, roses unfurl their lovely petals to reveal lovely colour and scents, and vegetables start to produce beautiful tasty crops, rewarding you for all your earlier hard work. In the vegetable patch this month, those of you lucky enough to have an asparagus bed shouldn’t forget to stop cutting them on 21st June (longest day), as this will allow the asparagus crowns to build up energy for next year’s harvest. Sow cabbages, cauliflowers, calabrese and kale for winter use, and keep the plants in your veg plot hand weeded or hoed, to cut out the competition from the weeds. If you have already planted runner beans, provide canes or other support to give them something to climb. It is also important to keep your courgettes, marrows and squashes well watered, which if allowed to dry, will increase the chance of powdery mildew. If growing tomatoes, wait until the first flowers have set fruit before starting to feed with a high potash feed. Plants growing in grow bags such as chillies, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers will also benefit from regular feeding.
your garden by Jim Green, Farcet Nurseries
Continue to plant up hanging baskets, containers and garden boarders with bedding and basket plants. I would encourage you to try and grow sunpatiens in your garden, as these are wonderful floriferous plants. These vigorous and wide spreading plants will give a wonderful show all summer. Place many flower tubs and containers all around your garden and
this will bring your garden alive. The effect is instant, always admired by friends and family and will look wonderful when having a BBQ. Oh...and being June, eat and enjoy those lovely strawberries with cream! Many people have told me how useful they have found the gardening tip that I gave last year on using your spare wasted cooking oil to keep your tools clean. I will repeat this for those who missed it. It is simply this... Get a large box or container, line it with polythene, fill it with sand and pour some waste oil onto the sand. When you have used your tools in the garden (eg. a spade or fork), clean off the soil and then plunge it into the sand box, which will not only clean the tool it will also oil it to stop rust.
And remember... “By the time you find greener pastures...you can’t climb over the fence!”

Whilst ice-cream vans may be a seasonal delight, the confection itself is of course readily available from our supermarkets all year round in an astonishing array of different flavour combinations. But it has to be said that there’s nothing quite like the homemade variety and all you need is an ice cream maker!
Divorce or Separation can it ever be amicable and less expensive?
A firm favourite is real vanilla ice-cream, made with a rich homemade egg custard infused with seeds from a vanilla pod. It’s delicious on its own, but it also makes basic desserts such as fruit crumble or cinnamon-baked bananas into something special. In addition, you can incorporate all sorts of extras to add different flavours and textures: small pieces of good quality caramel or fudge, a marbling of raspberry purée, chopped strawberries, slivers of stem ginger, or even finely-chopped chilli with chocolate. And for a luscious, grown-up, boozy version, try adding whisky and a little Manuka honey – go steady with any alcohol though, as it slows down the freezing process quite considerably.
It is a sad fact of modern society that each year the national divorce rate in England and Wales goes up. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said there were 118,140 divorces in 2012, up 0.5% on 2011. The report says there were approximately 13 divorces an hour granted in England and Wales in 2012. Almost half occurred in the first 10 years of marriage. When a couple decide to separate or divorce it is not unusual for them to feel frightened, vulnerable and unsure where to turn. Clients need expert, friendly and proactive advice but don’t always know where to find it. I can help. I’ll provide a friendly ear to listen and the legal expertise to provide answers. When separating or divorcing, the most important issues to consider are the property and finances, together with matters relating to the children. These two issues cause the most upset and stress but obtaining expert legal advice can ease the pain. If handled well, divorce or separation does not have to be expensive or anger driven – many of my clients say that I provide a calm and collective approach, with quick results in a proactive, amicable and cost effective way. To find out how I can help you in relation to any Family Law queries call or email me now. I offer a FREE initial telephone consultation to all new clients. If you do require further help, meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient and local to you.

Reducing
the fear of crime As the owner of www.safelocaltrades.com, an online local register of vetted, recommended tradespeople, I work with a number of different partners across the county, one of which is The Bobby Scheme, based in Sawtry. The Bobby Scheme is a charity dedicated to securing the homes of victims of crime aged 60 and over. They also help to reduce the fear of crime to non victims, disabled residents and victims of domestic abuse. The charity aims to:
• • • •
Reduce burglary Reduce repeat victimisation Reduce the fear of crime Increase feelings of safety and provide peace of mind
Why the community needs this charity Because they work closely with Cambridgeshire Police, they are able to identify victims of burglary aged 60+ within 24 hours and can offer their security service immediately. They can then target crime hot spots in the county and secure the homes of non-victims aged 65+ in the area, thus reducing the likelihood of thieves returning to the vicinity. The Bobbies not only fit security equipment to the homes of the elderly but also give safety advice which helps victims feel safe in their own homes again. They offer the same service to non-victims for a small donation.
Work to date Since the scheme started, they have visited over 21,800 homes. Last year the Scheme helped 228 victims aged 60+, 827 potential victims and fitted 114 key safes. Their figures show the repeat burglary rate in the county is 12% and, where The Bobby Scheme has secured homes, the repeat burglary rate is less than 1%.
