Stanground C of E Churches This month, we come to the celebration of the Queen’s official birthday and all round the country there will be special events. We are very excited that someone from our church has had an invitation to Buckingham Palace. Sadly, we can’t all go there, but we can all go to one of the local celebrations. In our churches there are three events; the first on on the afternoon of Saturday 11th is a Strawberry Tea at The Stables, Thorstlenest, Farcet. On Sunday 12th there are two special services; one in the morning at 9.30am at St John’s with a very big birthday cake. In the afternoon at St Michael’s Church School, Cardea at 4pm, the service will have an international flavour to celebrate the fact that the Queen is also loved around the world, so we will be waving the flags of many nations, and singing ‘happy birthday’ in all the languages we can think of, as well as eating cake, of course. On 24 June, it’s St John the Baptist Day, the traditional ‘Stanground Feast’ time. This year we plan to celebrate with a Treasure Hunt followed by a barbecue and a special evening worship, all at St John’s. Finally, I would like to express my thanks to all Peterborough City Council candidates who took part in our two Election Hustings at the end of April. Both meetings demonstrated the sense that in spite of party differences there is a great willingness to work together for the good our our local communities, to engage with local people and to work to maintain a strong community. May God bless and keep you, Anne /StangroundCofEChurches www.stangroundcofechurches.co.uk

Successful spring-clean for community church A large number of Stanground Baptist Church members got stuck into an array of jobs for the annual spring-clean. They arrived bright and early on two Saturday mornings in April and May, buckets, dusters and trowels at the ready, to tackle a variety of jobs inside and outside the church, including cleaning windows, weeding and tidying the garden/around the church and clearing out cupboards. As the church does not employ a cleaner, gardener or caretaker, it relies on willing volunteers from its fellowship to keep the building and garden areas tidy and clean throughout the year and the spring-clean targets any extra jobs. The youngest volunteer, Zachary Stapleton, is only 5 years old, but enjoyed helping his dad to polish all the chairs and happily vacuumed the Sunday school room on his own (with dad providing guidance!) The team was blessed with fine weather, so many outdoor jobs were completed, in-between plenty of cups of coffee and slices of cake! Paula Stapleton, one of the Deacons, who was responsible for organising the springclean and a long list of tasks, explained : “Our church has long had the motto: ‘Church of the community, for the community’ and it is very important to our members to serve the people of Stanground in practical, as well as spiritual ways. Part of this service is to open the church during the week, not just on a Sunday and to make it a safe, welcoming and pleasant place to come to. We have an ongoing plan of improvements to the building, which has already included new guttering this year and will hopefully include some redecoration in the summer. I would like to thank everyone who helped at the Springclean and all the volunteers who look after the church week by week.” Groups which regularly use the church during the week include Brownies, Totstop baby and toddler group, coffee morning and Food bank. If you would like details of when these groups run please visit the church website or look at the notice-board outside the church on Chapel Street. See our website for further details of all activities and directions: www.stangroundbaptistchurch.org.uk

Elizabeth, a Southfields Primary student, stood up for what she believed was wrong when she observed a local bakers bagging perfectly good food up to be binned.

Bags of help for homeless Elizabeth and her mum went into town and on their way back to the car they popped into a local bakers for a drink, whilst they were there Elizabeth noticed that a member of staff had come out with two bin bags and started chucking what appeared to be perfectly good food into them from behind the counter. Elizabeth asked the lady if the food was off and the staff member said that it wasn’t, but added: “but we can’t sell it because it’s no longer fresh so it has to be binned.” Elizabeth was so surprised that she and her Mum decided to take away the two bin bags of good food and after spending some time messaging various places they discovered an organisation called GiveBack Peterborough via Facebook where the food was taken to and given out to homeless people and the also the Amazon Ward for the parents staying at the hospital. Southfields Primary and Elizabeth’s family are very proud of her using her initiative and speaking up when she saw something that she knew was wrong and that could potentially help others. Well done Elizabeth and special thanks to Lauren Barnard (Year 5 Lead, Southfields Primary School) for bringing this to our attention. Greggs have since agreed to make donations to an organisation on a regular basis to limit their waste.

Cardea update

Kate Ferris on behalf of Cardea Residents’ Association

I

t finally seems as though summer is just around the corner and here at Cardea we are looking forward to the opening of our new pavilion and more sports and activities taking place. I’m still on the look out for prizes for our tombola stall in aid of Cardea Youth Club, so if you have any suitable items or are a local business wanting to donate a prize, please let me know and I’ll arrange collection. The youth club recently took part in an activity to collect the sounds of Cardea, which will form part of an arts exhibition on display later in the year in the gallery at Peterborough Museum. The kids really enjoyed going out with the recording equipment; the group of girls that I accompanied surprised shoppers in Morrisons with the big furry microphone but as soon as they explained what they were doing, no one seemed to mind. The kids then had fun turning their collected noises into music, which sounded very impressive, so look out for updates on this project. The youth Club is now nearing capacity with over 40 young people, which is

fantastic and has taken us by surprise, however, this amount of young people needs a fair amount of supervision and we could benefit from one or two committed leaders to join us. Even if you can only do once a month it would really help and we will organise a simple DBS check for you. If you feel you could spare a couple of hours on a Friday evening now and then, or just want some more information, please contact me. On other Cardea news, we now have our first double yellow lines at the beginning of Apollo Avenue which has caused a great deal of interest and conversations on the Facebook page! Whilst it has eliminated the problem of double parked congestion, it has caused further parking issues on the side streets and speeding around the corner near St Michael’s School. We urge residents and visitors alike to drive considerately as we do not want the situation to continue until the day we have a human casualty at Cardea (we have seen plenty of poor cats run over). If you need somewhere to park when picking up and dropping off children please use Morrisons carpark. The important message: please drive slowly through Cardea, 20 mph maximum.

Thistle Drive Community Centre As the last worksop was such a success there are another two Willow Weaving Workshops being held. These are free sessions and the dates of the next ones are: Friday 3 June and Friday 10 June. 10am – 12noon. For further information please contact Rachael on 074688 63108 or pop in and see Lindsey at the Centre.

Stanground chat club The club meets every other Tuesday 2 - 4pm at King Fisher Court, where you can enjoy a cup of tea and a chat. Various activities are programmed in throughout the year, including quizzes, guest speakers, outings and much more. Weekly membership is £1.50. Please contact Mandy Dewdney on 01733 564185 or Jean Fear on 01733 342206

The evacuees

N

early 5,000 children, known as evacuees, arrived in Peterborough in 1939 at the outbreak of the Second World War. The children, from London, had been put with Peterborough families to escape the German bombardment over London which was known as the Blitz. Imagine young children, some only six years of age, being put on a train and having to leave their loving environment of the family home to travel, in some cases, many miles with other children, to goodness knows where. This was being carried out at this particular time in Peterborough. It must have been a harrowing experience, not only for the children, but also for parents, who would have endured the most traumatic experience of not knowing when they would see their children again. This was the hardship and sadness of losing one’s children, as some

evacuees found happiness in their new homes whilst others were very unhappy indeed. My parents had volunteered to take an evacuee, his name was Derek Bishop. He was two years older than me and came from Palmers Green, London. Derek settled into his new home almost immediately where he and I became very close. It felt as though I had found another brother. He attended the local school where his personality was such that he knew everyone. We were together in the church choir where he had the most beautiful singing voice imaginable. Then, when my brother Tony was called up to serve in the British Army, Derek helped in my dad’s butchers shop for which my father was most grateful. Derek loved butchering and was never happier than making sausages and cooked

meats. He spent eight years with our family before, at the age of fourteen, his parents took him home to London. It was said at the time that he was the longest serving evacuee in the Peterborough area as all the other evacuees in Peterborough had long since returned home when the war had ended. Derek and I always kept in touch and we recently celebrated my 80th birthday together. He has often mentioned to me that when his parents took him home he was so miserable and he missed Stanground dreadfully . He was always eternally grateful to my parents that he had such an enjoyable time growing up in Stanground.

Please get in touch. E: info@stangroundgazette.co.uk We look forward to receiving your pictures and memories.

FINANCIAL FINANCIAL

MONEY MATTERS by Pete Bird, Bird & Laws Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Laws info@birdandlaws.co.uk and if of general interest we will publish them here.

Question If I own a property, can I assign all of the income to my children but retain the ownership of the property? The children would then pay zero income tax as the rental income is within their personal allowance. Answer You can do so, but it will not be effective for tax purposes – you will still be liable to income tax on this rental income. Even if you were to transfer the property ownership to them, as long as they are under 18 and unmarried and the income is more than £100 per year, you will still be liable to income tax on this income. This is due to the “settlements” rules. Directors’ Liabilities and Protections Company directors in limited companies may be held personally liable for the actions of the company, including other directors, “shadow directors” and non-executive directors. Directors face many risks and liabilities that may result in penalties, fines, disqualification and imprisonment for acts and omissions not only committed by themselves, but also by others. The Companies Act 2006 lays down seven statutory duties of directors which are owed to the company and also to shareholders. Only shareholders are protected against personal loss by limited liability companies – not directors. All directors should therefore be aware of their duties and responsibilities and avoid illegal acts, acting beyond their powers and failing to use sufficient skills and care. Practical Tip File returns and pay tax on time to avoid personal liability for company tax bills and NICs. Have insurance in place to protect the director acting on company business.

LOCAL AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT

Robert Jenks One Man’s Justice Local author, Robert Jenks, draws on his life experience to write One Man’s Justice, a book which reveals the power struggle of Martin Blake who thought he’d won the worst battles of his life after recovering from his mother’s cruelty and coping with depression, her only legacy.

W

hat could be more normal than coming home to his wife Karen, son Tommy and daughter Becky after an ordinary working day on the outskirts of Coventry? Yet nobody realises that an evil predator will drive a wedge through their lives. Before anyone knows it Becky has gone missing, taking the life her parents knew with her. Will Martin’s family and friends be enough to see him through? Or will a toxic cocktail of rage, guilt and grief gnaw Martin to death, or drive him to seek somebody else’s? Can the best of lawyers save Martin from the consequences of his actions? If justice fails to help him a second time, will he be beyond the help of his family and friends? Author Robert Jenks was born in Battersea in London in 1960 and went through state education leaving at sixteen to join the British army with no academic accomplishments behind him. He saw active service in Ulster, Belize and the Far East before leaving and becoming a family man in Cambridgeshire. “Life has been my greatest tutor!” he replies when asked, “What qualifies you to write a book such as this?”

BUSINESS

LEGAL ADVICE

New grant fund for Peterborough rural business Parental responsibility and your children As a family lawyer I am often contacted by distressed parents who are unable to reach an agreement with their former partner as to the arrangements for their children. Clients often feel they have lost the ability to be an equal parent because they are no longer living in the same home as their children. Some parents who have the children living with them, start trying to make all the decisions and control the situation regardless of what the other parents says or wants.

T

he law has tried in many ways over the years to deal with this situation and remind parents that even though they are separated they both jointly remain the parents of the children and should co-parent. The court will presume, unless it is shown to be unsafe for the child, that involvement of both parents in a child’s life will benefit their welfare long term. The court’s paramount consideration in any matter relating to a child will be the child’s welfare now and in the future. Parental responsibility means the legal rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority a parent has for the child and the child’s property. Since December 2004 all fathers automatically have parental responsibility, in addition to the mother, so long as they are married or named on the child’s birth certificate. If this does not apply to you then you can acquire parental responsibility by marrying the child’s mother; by both signing a parental responsibility agreement; or by order of the court. If you have parental responsibility you are automatically entitled to be involved in any important decisions relating to your child’s upbringing. This does not mean that you get to decide what they do on a day-to-day basis when they are with the other parent (or vice versa), but that you are automatically entitled to be involved in decisions relating to important matters such as education, medical care, religion and name changes. You are equally entitled to discuss your child’s welfare with their school and/or GP, with our without the other parent’s express agreement. If your former partner is not allowing you to be involved in decisions relating to your child’s upbringing or not allowing you to spend time with your child then you can take action to resolve this. The best way is always to try to communicate with the other parent to see if you can reach an agreement. As your child’s parents you two know better than anyone what is best for your child. However if communication has broken down and an agreement cannot be reached then a Resolution accredited lawyer may be able to assist you to negotiate an agreement fairly and amicably via correspondence and this is the best way to resolve matters so you get to spend time with your child quickly.

Rural Peterborough communities and businesses looking to grow but needing help with funding can now apply to the Rural Peterborough and Rutland LEADER programme for financial support.

Economic development company Opportunity Peterborough launched the new grant fund and support programme last November, following a successful bid to secure £1.32 million to fund and deliver support in rural Peterborough. The LEADER scheme, part of the Rural Development Programme for England, is jointly funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Farmers, growers, businesses and community groups can now apply for LEADER funding to support projects that help to grow the rural economy in their area. Grants are also available to boost tourism, by supporting cultural and heritage activities. “I would encourage any business or group to attend this event where potential applicants can learn whether they are eligible for funding and how to apply”. CHARITY

Citizens Advice Peterborough (CAP) are celebrating Volunteers’ Week by highlighting the invaluable work of their volunteers who help people in Peterborough to solve problems and issues in their lives and to get back on to their feet.

Thanking volunteers for their invaluable work

V New electric wheels for local charity! The independent charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) has gained a new way to travel around the city and surrounding areas.

T

he PECT electric car will help the charity to further reduce its environmental impact and continue to raise awareness of sustainable transport choices with local residents and organisations. The electric car will be added to PECT’s sustainable transport fleet, which includes bicycles for staff to use to get to meetings: “Using sustainable transport to carry out our work is important to us, whether that’s by walking, cycling or by taking public transport. The varied nature of what we do means that there are some tricky journeys that staff have needed to use their own vehicles for - the electric car is intended to replace those,” explains PECT’s CEO Carly Leonard. PECT is grateful for the support of Smiths Motor Group, who has teamed up with the charity to provide the new electric Nissan Leaf. The new PECT car is 100% powered by electricity, which means that it produces no localised pollution – meaning cleaner air and reduced noise. Electric vehicles charged using average UK mains electricity show a reduction in lifecycle CO2 emissions of around 20% compared to conventional vehicles. However, larger carbon reductions are likely as the UK grid continues to ‘decarbonise’ and make more regular use of renewable energy sources. “As a charity, our work takes us to lots of different areas in the city and surrounding areas to enable us to make a difference on the ground to businesses, communities and schools,” explains PECT’s CEO Carly Leonard. “Current activity includes our Healthy Homes project where we are working with residents in Peterborough and Fenland to provide energy advice and home improvements with the aim of saving energy and enabling affordable warmth in homes.”

For more information about the charity’s work, visit www.pect.org.uk or call 01733 568408. Plus find PECT on Facebook by searching ‘Peterborough Environment City Trust’ or on Twitter @SustainableCity.

olunteers’ Week is an annual event celebrating the contribution made by millions of people across the UK. This year, it takes place from 1-12 June; when they will be celebrating the work of their current volunteers and hopefully recruiting new ones at stands in Queensgate Shopping Centre on Thursday 2 June and in Serpentine Green Shopping Centre on Tuesday 7 June. If you are interested in finding out more about what the volunteers do please go along and speak to one of their current volunteers. “CAP offers free, impartial advice and each year the team of wonderful volunteers help thousands of people with every problem imaginable. Each week our volunteers give up their time to support and advise the community, and we would like to say thank you, not only during volunteer week but all year round. As the backbone of the service, volunteers perform all sorts of roles from advising people face to face or over the phone, to administration, IT support, policy and research officers and as trustees. Our volunteers have the opportunity to learn new skills through our extensive training programme.”

During April 2016 CAP collated compliments from their clients: • “Excellent service, so glad I came. Lovely friendly people working there, give 5 stars.” • “Very helpful and informative” • “Delighted with advice received, great service” • “Was very calm and helpful, patient and did all she could to solve my problem” • “Such a pleasant visit and a very helpful lady and some great advice. I’ve struggled with illness and things like this can be quite challenging so I’m very happy with the help and advice” • “Very helpful, caring and in my opinion wonderful” • “Very good advisors, give me attention and good advice and help.” • “First class help, support and service.” Citizens Advice has found that as well as giving a lot, the volunteers receive a lot in return: • 9 in 10 volunteers gained knowledge of local issues and felt more engaged with their community • 9 in 10 feel better equipped and empowered to deal with issues in their own lives with 4 in 5 also helping friends and family • Nearly a third of volunteers who leave Citizens Advice go on into paid employment or full time education.

The volunteers are made up people of all ages and backgrounds, including those in work and those who want to dedicate more time to community activities. If you can spare a few hours each week and would be interested in getting involved, please visit www.citapeterborough.org.uk/volunteer-with-us/.

SPORT

Good Sport Pumas cubs come good in Cambridge

Park Farm Pumas’ first tournament of the spring/ summer saw the club land on Cambridge Utd’s Abbey stadium.

For some, like the U11s & U10s, it was a revisit to our friends at Cambridge Utd but for the U6s it was not only their first ever tournament but their first ever match. Our super 6s stepped out onto the turf of the professional Division 2 side at the Abbey and despite some nerves of the occasion and the substantial crowd of people they did the club proud with a fantastic effort. These young lads are currently seeking a new sponsor for the upcoming season. Anyone interested should contact Ciaran McAuley on

07713 106898 ASAP. Our tenacious U10’s also had a fantastic tournament, just getting pipped at the post with an extra time defeat in the semi-final that attracted the attention of the Cambridge Utd Chairman Dave Doggett who watched the game with interest. Coach Trevor Blackmore said that “defeat in a semi-final is never easy to take but I am so very proud of the efforts of these lads this tournament and throughout the entire season, I can’t wait for the next one.”

Park Farm Pumas want to grow their number of teams for next year and are particularly interested in players at Current U11 (current school year 6), U12, (Current school year 7) and U13 (current school year 8). If you are interested in playing, coaching or just getting involved, please contact our chairman Ciaran McAuley on 077131 06898.

Pavillion grand opening

The Cardea Community Sports Association (CCSA) would like to extend an open invitation to the entire community of Cardea, Park Farm and the wider Stanground areas to the grand opening of the Cardea Pavilion building & playing fields. Pumas), BBQ, Beer tent (organised by the Apple Cart), fun activities for children like bouncy Castles & slides, Tombola (organised by the CRA), Raffle, Beat the Goalie, and many more activities. There will also be a variety of information stalls from our partners in the community – The Cardea Residents Association (CRA), Park Farm Pumas FC, Cardea FC and the CSSA. If you are a business in the area or someone who is keen to get involved in your local community we would love to hear from you. We are looking for sponsors, volunteers and attendees at this grand opening.

We are now in a position to reveal more details about the event and it gives me great pleasure to announce that on the Saturday 16th July the Pavilion building will be officially opened by Shailesh Vara MP for North West Cambridgeshire. We are hopeful of also having a celebrity guest to support on the day as well but this is yet to be confirmed. Watch this space for more information. The CCSA will also be planning a plethora of additional activities over the whole weekend of the 16th & 17th July – these include a car boot sale, a craft fair, a youth football tournament (organised by Park Farm

For any further information please contact Ciaran McAuley on 07713 106898, Jason Holt on 07973 704259 or Trevor Blackmore on 07856 290338. ART

Community art project

The Community Art project took place on at Thistle Drive Community Centre. Centre users were invited to come and create a large scale art piece that is to be displayed in the garden area at the centre.

Hand prints large and small were used to complete the piece. Children, parents and volunteers worked together using materials donated by The Creation Station and materials sourced by the team at Thistle Drive Centre. Afterwards, families enjoyed tea and cake in the sunshine. The artwork is now on display in the garden. The garden is much improved over recent weeks thanks to volunteers and the arrival of spring! For more information on future projects please contact Coralie on 01733 741354 or email coraliehuson@thecreationstation.co.uk

June

June brings forth Father’s Day – Sunday 19 June – so remember to take your Dad out and make him feel special. Whilst looking up the date for this, I came across a few other notable June dates; did you know that Father’s Day shares it’s day with National Kissing Day? Or that there is a National Yo Yo Day? This is jointly shared with the beginning of Ramadam fasting (6 June). 20 June is the Summer Solstice - which sadly is the longest day of the year – so make good use of the lovely light evenings. 21 June is World Music Day and 29th is a National Hug Day, so spread the love!

The Woolpack

The Heron

Big changes are happening at the pub, with Ang and Geoff - formerly of The Whittle in Stanground - moving in to take over the day to day running of the pub from the end of May. Linda says that this will free her up to organise lots more events such as beer festivals, charity days, etc., so watch this space! The Woolpack will be open at 12noon on a Monday and Tuesday and offering lunches again. Food times will be: Lunches 12-2pm Mon to Sat, 123pm Sun. Evening Meals 6-8pm Mon to Sat.

The Heron Quiz and Play Your Cards Right are on every Tuesday from 8pm. Meri says that their beautiful enclosed garden is an ideal place to have an evening sup whilst the sun goes down. All the international football will be shown on Sky Sports HD, BT Sport HD and terrestrial television in HD. The England International will take place in The Back Room on the big screen on 18 June. The Heron has a Facebook page for you to find out what’s happening. Meri promises BBQs galore over the summer months... www.facebook.com/THEHERONSTANGROUND

The recent Woolpack Beer Festival was a great success and raised over £400 for a local 8 year old boy, Rico, who is fighting a rare form of meningitis. Rico was in a coma and has lost a foot and some toes whilst battling it. There are a number of charity events going on in the area to support Rico and his family. It is hoped that they can enjoy a family holiday once he is better.

If you have any pub news, please send to: roz@stangroundgazette.co.uk. We have a Stanground Gazette Facebook page where we can keep you updated. Landlords – you can advertise/promote your gigs on there too. So, find us on Facebook and join in!

FOOD & DRINK

Let’s get barbecuing Build a pyramid shape with the charcoal and insert charcoal firelighters. Light and wait for 30 minutes. Use a barbecue tool to spread out the charcoal. It’s not ready for cooking until the coals are white.

Be patient

The biggest mistake is to start cooking before the charcoal is ready. If your barbecue party starts at 7.00, light the barbecue at 6.30.

Storage

Store your charcoal in a cool dry place. A garage or shed is ideal but it must be off the floor. A plastic dustbin is ideal. Proper storage will eliminate the use of starter fluids.

Tightwad or recycling?

When you have finished cooking, close the lid of the barbecue and close the air vents. In the morning you will be able to salvage some left over charcoal. Just place in a plastic throw-away shopping bag and shake. All the dust will have come off the charcoal and it will be ready to use again.

Additional safety points to remember • • • • •

Barbecue safety Choosing a barbecue

There are many different types of barbecue on the market. Whichever one you choose, keep safety in mind. Besides the normal charcoal models, you can also purchase calor gas ones and do-it-yourself kits. Make sure your barbecue is sturdy as barbecues become deceptively hot and many cheaper models are extremely unstable. Look out for sharp edges and follow assembly instructions very carefully. Look for a barbecue with a fat collector to minimise smoke emissions and potential fire risk. Barbecue position Position the barbecue well away from fences and trees. Ensure the site is level and not situated in a position where the barbecue can be knocked over. Consider your neightbours. Site the barbecue away from their homes. Do not disturb them with smoke or noise. (You can always invite them!) Lighting up Always use the correct materials and fuels for lighting the barbecue and observe the manufacturer’s instructions. Look for child-

CREATE THE PERFECT BBQ proof caps when buying lighter fuel and always replace the cap after use. Never pour lighter fuel onto hot coals even if they appear to have gone out. Keep combustible materials and matches away from the barbecue. Food preparation & cooking Keep all utensils and plates for cooked foods separate from those used for uncooked food. All frozen food must be completely defrosted before cooking on a barbecue. Meat and other high risk foods should be kept in a refrigerator until needed. Barbecues tend to char food on the outside and leave the centre raw. All meat should be cooked thoroughly but portions of chicken and other poultry need particular care. It may be a good idea to pre-cook meats by conventional methods before finishing off on the barbecue. Food should not be left in the sunshine. To prevent contamination by insect pests, all food should be placed in sealed containers and be kept off the ground. Only kettle-style barbecues are suitable for cooking joints and whole chickens. Other types will not cook the meat thoroughly. Use a meat thermometer to check that the meat is cooked properly.

To minimise accidents, ensure children are under constant supervision and never leave the barbecue unattended. Glassware is breakable and can be dangerous. Use plastic or disposable beakers and plates. Ensure suitable fire fighting equipment is close at hand, e.g. garden hose/bucket of sand. Dispose of refuse in a covered bin so as not to attract insects and vermin. Never put hot ashes directly into a dustbin. Wait until they have cooled down.

Makes 4 skewers

Ingredients 1 skinless and boneless chicken breast ½ green pepper (cut into big cubes) ½ yellow pepper (cut into big cubes) ½ red pepper (cut into big cubes)

sizzling summer recipes

Top tip

Chicken Kebabs

Marinade: 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil 1 ½ tablespoons lemon juice ½ – 1 teaspoon paprika (if you like spicy, use 1 teaspoon) ½ teaspoon chilli flakes ½ teaspoon ground cumin seeds ¼ of one small onion 2 cloves garlic ¼ teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley leaves (or dried parsley)

If you use bamboo skewers, soak them in cold water overnight so they don’t get burned during the grilling process.

For cooking 2 tablespoons olive oil (for brushing) Method  Cut the chicken into small cubes (a total of 16 pieces), pat dry and marinate with the ingredients for at least 1 hour, best if left in the fridge overnight.  Thread four pieces of chicken meat with one piece of each of the peppers onto a metal skewer or bamboo skewer. Repeat the same and make four skewers. Set aside.  Grill the chicken kebab on your BBQ until cooked. While grilling, brush the chicken and bell peppers with olive oil. Serve hot.

GARDENING

Lawn care TIPS This month sisters Sarah and Jo Parish who run GreenThumb Peterborough & Oundle give their top tips on lawn care as we head into summer.

T

he welcome flurry of bank holidays in April and May encouraged people into their gardens and we’ve been busy visiting new customers who have been despairing of all their weeds and unhealthy looking grass. If you don’t have the time or know-how to put it right, don’t worry, it’s never too late to call us in to give you a lovely healthy, weed free lawn for the summer.

What can we do to help? We’ll carry out a FREE lawn analysis to assess the condition of your lawn, the different types of weed and the ground conditions that the lawn is growing in. We’ll agree a programme of treatments to get your lawn lush and weed free, often from as little as £15 per quarter depending on the size of the lawn. Direct debit options are available too. It’s hassle free and there’s no more worrying about buying and storing fertilisers and weedkillers at home. Our technicians are all fully qualified to safely use the best products, in the right quantities, at the right time of year.

And you? A regularly well-mown lawn will be healthy and will naturally discourage weeds. Never cut your lawn less than 1” and never let it get longer than 3”. This is the most common piece of advice we give to customers. Just sit back and enjoy the results!

If you’d like us to look after your lawn for you or for a FREE lawn analysis, contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028. Email peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk

CONSUMER ADVICE

It’s daunting enough having to make contact with a tradesman, let alone trust a stranger, to enter your home and carry out maintenance work or repairs.

Safe Local Trades supporting the work of Age UK locally

I

magine being elderly, vulnerable and in some cases, living alone, and having to make that decision? That is why Safe Local Trades is delighted to support the work of Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. We admire the charity’s hard work and all it does for the local community – which of course could be a friend or relative reading this. Over the past seven years, Safe Local Trades has raised over £33,000 for the cause, through the personal efforts of SLT director Eileen Le Voi, trade members, family and friends. One of the most recent events was the hugely successful Insane Terrain challenge, which to date has raised around £2,075. Helping to achieve that great total were Hampton brother and sister, Sarah Copland and Simon Gooch – who have raised £686 in memory of their dad John. Sarah said: “Thanks to everyone who has donated so far. We wanted to raise funds for Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough in memory of our cherished and hugely

missed dad, John Gooch, who supported several charities including this one. Age comes to us all eventually and, for some, can be a challenge in itself. “It was great for us to get involved in this fantastic event through the support of Safe Local Trades.” Would you like to join Simon, Sarah and do your bit to add to the £33,000 already raised by Safe Local Trades for the charity? Well, getting involved is just a couple of clicks away. There is still time to sign up for a 13,000 ft tandem sky dive at Sibson Airfield – which takes place on Saturday 9 July. And, if you raise £300 for charity, you will be on cloud nine at receiving a free sky dive. Why not make it a team building event and get your friends or work colleagues involved. Or if you prefer your feet on terra firma, why not sign up for the Perkins Great Eastern Run half marathon (or fun run) on Sunday 9 October and fulfil a personal goal as well as rise to a fundraising challenge?
