Cardea update
Kate Ferris (Cardea Residents’ Association)
Greetings from Cardea, where the number of houses and residents grows literally day by day!
W
elcome to all new Cardeans. We hope you enjoy your new home and living here whether you come from near or afar. We are a friendly bunch and have several groups and activities established and up and running, so if you’re a family with young children looking for a toddler group, a jogger seeking people to run with, somewhere to Zumba or do yoga or a teenager wanting a youth club to meet up with friends ...Cardea now has it all! Speaking of the Youth Club, we returned after a break on 3 February with a revamp, a new structure to the way the club is organised and themed activities throughout the evening. The club is still free to attend, still has a tuck shop and still runs every fortnight in term time on Fridays, 7-9pm. We have room for a few more members, aged 11-16 and we still need new volunteer leaders, particularly male. If you have two hours to spare once or twice a month and can help, please get in touch as we’d love to hear from you. The community of Cardea is taking part in The Great British Spring Clean by holding a litter pick on the morning of Saturday 4 March; exact details and times will be announced nearer the time and communicated via the Mycardea Facebook group, the community notice boards, the Pavilion and Morrison’s. We already have volunteers from various elements of our growing community and further afield. The message is Pride in Our
Community so let us know if you’d like to be involved in this event, which will, of course, finish with refreshments and a chance to socialise with friends and neighbours. About litter, we are disappointed when we see that a small minority do not use the many litter bins that we are fortunate to have all around Cardea. We are disgusted, however, at the amount of dog poo that is left everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. Many of us are dog owners, myself included, and part of dog ownership is being responsible for clearing up after your pet. Dogs cannot use poo bags or reach to put said bag into the numerous bins provided for this purpose that are again all around Cardea. There really is no excuse for animal faeces left on every green area and even on private front gardens. Please take ownership and clear up after your dogs. Residents are not happy with this problem and are trying to find a civil way to tackle the problem while we wait to be adopted by Peterborough City Council. Lastly, it has been put to me that people would like to see the community meetings return. We used to hold a monthly meeting with updates from the Residents' Association, Neighbourhood Watch and First Responders. If a community meeting would be welcomed on an informal basis, more of a 'coffee & catch-up' type of event on a less frequent timetable – quarterly maybe - let me know.

Tax tips - matters to consider before 5 April 2017
Owner Managed Limited Companies: The taxation of dividend income changed significantly in April 2016, so it might be tax efficient, if there is sufficient retained profits in your company, to vote a minimum dividend to shareholders of £5,000. The first £5,000 dividend paid per tax year is tax free and the remainder over this amount is taxed at 7.50% providing you are a basic rate tax payer. Also you may consider gifting shares to your spouse to take advantage of the first £5,000 of dividend income that is tax free. Use your ISA allowance: ISA’s provide a tax free environment for your savings. Have you paid the maximum into your ISA investment during the 2016/2017 tax year of £15,240 per person – if not consider topping this amount up. In addition, parents can now also fund a junior ISA. Any unused investment limit cannot be rolled forward into next year, so it will be lost.

Use your personal allowance: Ensure that you are making the most of your tax-free personal allowance (PA), which is set at £11,000 for 2016/17. If your spouse or partner has little or no income, you may wish to consider transferring income (or incomeproducing assets) to them to make sure that they fully utilise their PA. However, you should take care to avoid falling foul of the settlements legislation governing ‘income shifting’, and consider the legal consequences of transfers. Certain married couples and civil partners may also be able to make use of the Marriage Allowance. This allows couples to transfer 10% of their PA to their spouse or civil partner, where neither pays tax at the higher or additional rate. The above is only a few matters you should consider, but there may be other opportunities depending upon your circumstances. More details are on our website, but professional advice on any matters should be taken as soon as possible, or talk to us.

nightingales The Wildlife Trust has some very special evenings on spring’s horizon at Cambridgeshire’s Grafham Water ... in collaboration with folk singer and nature lover Sam Lee. The Trust is hosting unique evening events; Singing with Nightingales at Grafham Nature Reserve, starting from Easter every weekend through until mid-May. These events will be a celebration of nightingales and their exquisite, melodious song; a series of musicians will commune with the birds deep in the woods after dark. The audience will meet round the camp fire for harmony with singers and musicians, have some delicious campfire food, hear information on the habitat and life of nightingales – then venture into the woods for a special close encounter.
The events are also a way of highlighting the worrying decline in nightingale numbers – and will reflect the important work which goes into creating perfect habitat for the birds at Grafham – to which the birds return every year from their overwintering grounds in sub-saharan Africa – Senegal, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and the Gambia. The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) carry out an annual tagging project at Grafham using tiny geolocator tags which feed data back from the route which the birds take on their long migrational journeys.

As part of its mission to inspire young lives, YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough has launched a new campaign designed to create a virtuous circle that encourages young people to keep themselves fit and healthy, and at the same time help others through tough times.
T
o create this win-win formula, YMCA has invested in a significant revamp of its gyms and fitness classes in Peterborough and Cambridge, while maintaining some of the lowest and most flexible prices for membership. The key to the campaign is that any surplus from gym memberships is passed immediately back into the charity to support programmes such as community counselling, supported accommodation, schools programmes, holiday clubs and access to employment. Julie Martin, Fitness and Training Manager commented: “YMCA exists to inspire young lives, and this campaign just does that. We want to inspire people to take care of themselves and at the same time take care of others. “We know people of all ages are put off gym membership by high prices and fixed contracts and we know too that many young people really want to look after themselves and to make a difference to their community. Along with our new facilities, we’re offering low prices, flexible membership and a commitment to invest the money we raise
through gym membership on work that supports young people through tough times.” Brenda already uses the gym and says: “It saved my life. I’ve lost five stone in weight, and the gym is so friendly and helpful I didn’t feel intimidated at all.” Another user, Helen, added: “I don’t see it as exercise – it’s fun and the atmosphere is great, I love it!” With monthly fees from just £11.99 per month, YMCA’s competitive offer also includes access to exercise classes and four free personal training sessions with every monthly membership purchase. The charity runs gyms at both Queen Anne House in Cambridge and The Cresset in Peterborough. The new facilities boast over 70 gym and studio stations and are all open for use from today. YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough is part of the wider national YMCA federation that, in total, runs 54 gyms, 29 leisure centres, 26 multi use game areas, as well as 48 community halls for leisure use. YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough was created in 1852 in 2015/16 we had 16,383 visit to our gym.

Little Acorns
Day Nursery and Montessori School We have been celebrating Chinese New Year at Little Acorns; the children have enjoyed getting messy, playing with noodles using chopsticks and dressing up in Chinese outfits.
T
he pre-school children have been learning about the different animals on the Chinese calendar. We have also tried some Chinese food for our snacks. 'Thank you' to the parents who joined us for lunch, the children really enjoyed having their parents with them and showing them how well behaved and helpful they are at nursery. This month, we will be spending time in the garden where we have a new growing area. The children will be able to watch the different fruits and vegetables grow and will eventually be able to pick them for their snacks and meal times. We are now taking bookings for children to start at Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori school in August 2017. For more information please contact us on 01733244000 or email us on littleacorns.daynursery@yahoo.co.uk
NSPCC appeals for more volunteers to help local children stay safe from abuse A scheme that empowers children as young as four to stay safe from abuse is looking for more volunteers.
T
he NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe programme has reached nearly 6,000 children in schools in the Peterborough area over the last three years. The initiative is fully ageappropriate and sees assemblies take place with reception and year one pupils as well as more in-depth interactive talks and workshops with older students. Primary school children are taught about different forms of child abuse such as neglect, bullying and physical and sexual abuse and encouraged to speak out about any worries they have with the help of mascot Buddy. In some cases, the assemblies have even resulted in children reporting abuse, leading to offenders being prosecuted and convicted of their crimes. The NSPCC’s Lisa Hynes recently visited Farcet Church of England Primary School where pupils will also take part in a sporting activity to raise money for the charity. Lisa said: “It is vital that young people know the trusted adults
they can talk to and through this programme we can help protect a generation of children. “Our team does a fantastic job in creating a fun atmosphere to educate young people, but in order to reach our goal of visiting every school in the Peterborough area we simply need more volunteers.” Farcet head teacher Nathanael Robinson said: “The team gave vital advice to the children in an engaging and lively way. “The pupils understood the key messages and can't stop talking about Buddy. They already knew what to do in order to keep themselves safe, but they now have an even clearer understanding. They are motivated to take part in the upcoming fundraising activities.” Volunteers will be given extensive training about the NSPCC’s work and the different forms of abuse children suffer and will be required to visit two schools a month.
For more information contact Michelle Newton on 01163 665640 or email michelle.newton@NSPCC.org.uk. Teachers can also request a Speak Out Stay Safe visit to their school via www.nspcc.org.uk

Naughty Amelia Jane! by Enid Blyton
Some books never fail to entertain generation after generation and the Amelia Jane books by Enid Blyton are no exception. At some point in childhood we all wonder what would happen if our toys were alive. Well in this nursery they are. Amelia Jane is a big ragdoll and she is not just big, she is bad. And the other toys are generally scared of her. Hardly surprising when she does things like throwing pints of milk over other toys on a regular basis! These short chapters almost work as individual short stories
which makes it a nice transition for readers to proper ‘chapter books’. Each chapter sees Amelia Jane getting into trouble and being naughty but ultimately learning a lesson: one that she seems destined to forget despite her protestations that she ‘will be good from now’. Lessons that demonstrate to the reader why it is important to be kind and considerate towards others. In the words of Enid Blyton: “I do somehow feel perfectly certain that she can’t be good for long.”

March
The days are starting to lengthen out now with signs of spring in the air. March brings about one of my favourite days – St Patrick's Day – which is always loads of fun to celebrate. This year the date is Friday 17 March.
S
t Patrick is credited for driving all of the snakes out of Ireland. What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods, lots of green and much drinking of Guinness. I have found out a few interesting facts for you about this special day:
LOCALGIGGUIDE
• According to Irish legend, Patrick wasn’t actually his name. He was born Maewyn Succat, but changed his name to Patricius after becoming a priest.
The Swiss Cottage
• St Patrick isn't Irish and is thought to be Welsh.

EFER
• Originally the colour favoured for symbolising St Patrick was blue, with the green being associated with St Patrick's Day after being linked with the Irish independence movement in the late 18th century • For most of the 20th century, Saint Patrick’s Day was considered a strictly religious holiday and the Irish pubs were closed for business. In 1970 the day was converted to a National Holiday, and the stout flowed. (Hooray!)

• In 2010 the Sydney Opera House coloured itself green to mark the 200th anniversary of St Patrick's Day in Sydney
• Every year in Chicago, plumbers dye the river Kelly green – the dye in the river lasts for 5 hours.
The Heron Meri is incredibly proud to let you know that they have recently won the CAMRA LocAle Pub of The Year, which is fantastic news! The Woolpack Linda and her team continue to serve their popular Sunday roasts from 12noon-3pm.

Eggs Benedict Treat mum to a well-deserved break and a lot of pampering this Mother's Day. Start her day with breakfast in bed with this quick and simple and classic Eggs Benedict recipe. If you’re not a fan of ham you can swap this by using spinach, salmon or bacon.
5. Transfer it to a heatproof jug and keep warm in a pot of warm water while you poach the eggs.
How to make the hollandaise sauce
Time to poach the eggs
1. Place three egg yolks in a heatproof bowl with one tablespoon cold water; whisk for one to two minutes, until the mixture becomes light and frothy. 2. Place the bowl over a pan of barely simmering water but don't let the bowl touch the water because if the egg mixture gets too hot, they may scramble as they heat. 3. Continue to whisk for another one or two minutes until warmed and slightly thickened. 4. Slowly add softened butter cubes, one at a time, whisking continually until mixture thickens. 5. Season well with salt and lemon juice.
1. Bring a wide, deep pan of water and 1 tablespoon vinegar to the boil - the vinegar will help the eggs to set quicker. 2. Lower the heat and use a spoon to stir the simmering water to create a swirl. 3. Crack each egg into a separate ramekins or small bowls. Gently slide the eggs into the water, one at a time. 4. Cook until the egg white has set but the yolk is soft and runny, about two minutes. 5. Use a slotted spoon to carefully scoop out the poached eggs. Drain on kitchen paper to remove any excess water.
To serve: Butter the toast, arrange ham on top of each slice, then top with a poached egg. Spoon the hollandaise sauce over the top of the poached egg and garnish with some chopped chives.

lawn to life To achieve a lush, healthy and weed free lawn, now is the time to take action! Sisters’ Sarah and Jo Parish who run our local award winning GreenThumb lawn treatment service say that a little work now on the lawn will reap real rewards in the year to come.
Five tips for a great lawn: Go carefully on your first cut Raise the height of your first cut to just ‘top’ the grass – too low will stress the grass just when it needs encouraging.
Lawns don’t like shade Border plants, shrubs and trees all have a habit of encroaching on the lawn and denying it light … time to get the secateurs out!
Check your blade is sharp blunt blades shred the grass and don’t give a clean cut. This may cause a brown, bruised appearance and can lead to the onset of disease.
Get expert help from GreenThumb If you’re looking at a weedy and tired looking lawn, after a couple of visits from GreenThumb most, if not all, of your weeds will be gone Not too short … or too long and your grass will be healthy and Never cut less than 25mm (1”). Mowing little and often is by far the green. GreenThumb’s hassle free seasonal ‘weed & feed’ treatments. best. are four times a year. Mother'sDay Day Gifts 26 March
Mother's Day is very special time to let your mother how much you appreciate everything she has done for you all year, so why not show her how much you care with a thoughtful gift? Whether it's a traditional gift like delicious chocolates or sumptuous perfumes and fragrances, you're sure to find something she'll love here.
Mother’s Day You may not realise, but Mother’s Day happens on the fourth Sunday of Lent and originally had religious traditions attached to it. In the sixteenth century, it was a celebration of the ‘mother church’ and people would return to the church in which they were baptised or where they attended as a child. Thus families would be reunited. This was known as going ‘a mothering ‘or Mothering Sunday. It was commonplace for the Lent fast which prohibited sweet, rich foods and meat to be lifted a little and for a Simnel cake to be shared. Years later, youngsters working as servants were given an annual day off to visit their mothers and would take gifts. This was called ‘Mothers Day.’ The celebrations of Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day have generally combined into one annual occasion.

The first official Mother’s Day was organised by Ann Jarvis in 1908 in West Virginia as a memorial to her mum. By the 1920’s however Ann had become disillusioned by the commercialism of the day and especially the common use of printed greetings cards. Celebrating the day became less popular. It wasn’t until the second World War when soldiers wanted to acknowledge their distant mothers, that the day grew in popularity once more. By Susan Brookes- Morris

Tough new laws now in force for mobile use behind the wheel
by Eileen Le Voi
As tempting as it may be to send that quick text or make that short call on your mobile – it is now worth remembering more than ever, that as well as being dangerous - using your phone whilst driving could cost you dearly.
T
ough new laws brought in from 1st March by police forces around the country will see those caught using their phone at the wheel facing a £200 fine and six points on their licence. If they are caught a second time, they would face a minimum six-month driving ban and would also be summoned to appear in court where they could be fined up to £1,000. We have all seen the disturbing news footage and images in the newspapers in recent weeks and months of what can happen when using a mobile phone whilst driving. These new changes will have a significant impact on young drivers in particular as they risk having their driving licence revoked following a first offence, and will require them to retake their test. Motorists will no longer be offered the opportunity to go on a driver awareness course. It is illegal to use a mobile phone, held in the hand, whilst driving or while stopped with the engine on.
But while it has been illegal since December 2003, research shows there has been a worrying shift in attitudes to mobile phone use behind the wheel. The RAC recently surveyed 1,714 motorists and 31% said they used a handheld phone behind the wheel compared with just 8% in 2014. The number of drivers who said they sent a message or posted on social media rose from 7% to 19%, while 14% said they had taken a photograph or video while driving. While to some it may seem acceptable to punch in those digits whilst driving, however, it has been proven that just for a couple of seconds of distraction, the consequences can be devastating.
Safe Local Trades is among the many organisations supporting this new law and the nationwide awareness campaign with the messages #itcanwait #dontriskit.
Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval. Go to www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone 01733 530019
Healthy Homes project helps local residents save £30,000 per annum The project Healthy Homes, run by the independent charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), has made a significant impact in the local community during the time it has been running.
L
aunched back in January 2016, the project has helped 362 households save money through providing energy tips and advice on switching to cheaper energy tariffs. This community-based project, funded by the British Gas Energy Trust and managed by Charis Grants, aimed to help local residents save money and improve the energy efficiency of their homes in order to have a positive impact on the environment. The
area of focus for Healthy Homes was in Peterborough and Fenland, enabling households in these areas to enjoy affordable warmth. Those eligible received a free home visit, where residents received impartial advice and tips on energy tariffs, plus information on the national £140 Warm Home Discount. In addition, referrals were made for fully-funded home improvements, including boiler replacements, insulation and
property maintenance, with these changes saving an average of £2,533 between 50 households. These improvements have saved a total of 17,418kg of carbon per year, which has in turn reduced the carbon footprint of individual homes. Local resident and project participant Miss Smith explains: “I knew my gas and electricity were getting in a muddle and I was paying too much. With help from Healthy Homes, I switched tariff

Do you want to join an award winn winning company? Cross Keys Care has recently won two prestigious Great British Care Awards. Its Kingfisher Court extra care scheme has won the Housing with Care category, while local superstar Care Worker, George Carpenter is celebrating having been awarded the Care Newcomer award.
G
eorge came to work in care after having a number of other jobs previously. In fact, he was working as a gardener during the building of Kingfisher Court when he saw that they were advertising for Care Workers. George had previously helped care for a number of family members and, as he says: “I thought why not give it a go. It would be a great way of using the skills I gained caring for my family and help others.” Since joining our Community Care team George has proved himself to be a natural carer and a huge asset to the team and business. He always does that little more to make his clients lives better, and to help them to stay living in their own home.
“I really do love my job – it doesn’t feel like work at all! Every day I leave work with a feeling of total job satisfaction, knowing I have helped to make someone’s life a bit better. Plus Cross Keys Care is such a great company to work for. So supportive and encouraging.” says George. “To have received this award is just the icing on the cake.” So, could you be next year’s Care Newcomer or Care Worker of the Year? Cross Keys Care is recruiting for committed and enthusiastic people who want to make a difference to people’s lives. With a competitive hourly rate, free uniforms, free training and a great mileage rate, what’s stopping you?
Join us today and become a winning Care Worker! Call today on 01733 385107 or visit www.crosskeyshomes.co.uk/workingcare www.stangroundgazette.co.uk February www.stangroundgazette.co.uk March2017 2017 stanground gazette 29
