Cardea Update I’m sure that almost everyone from Stanground and Park Farm has visited the Morrison’s store over here at Cardea by now and if you have you’ve no doubt noticed how much the development is growing, we now have in excess of five hundred households! Some of us have been here for more than three years now and have seen Cardea grow from a muddy building site, overlooking Farcet fens into a budding community. Besides the Morrison’s and The Apple Cart, we have St Michaels school which provides us with a base for community activities including Zumba classes and a meeting place for Neighbourhood Watch and other community events. The school also invites us all along to their celebrations, such as the Summer Festival, which last year was on a lovely sunny day and extremely well attended, and the outdoor Christmas Carol service. Last Christmas we even had snow falling gently as we sang (provided by a snow machine) but it added that magical touch! Morrison’s itself is active in the growth of our community, also allowing us to use their training room for meetings and providing funds for signs for NHW along with the community notice board in store.
You may also have noticed the grassed area in front of the pub which is our playing fields and, in the near future we hope to have a sports pavilion and play area to add to the facilities at Cardea. Another group open to all residents, old and new, is The Cardea Residents Association. We have a website, MyCardea.co.uk where you can find all local news, updates from the CRA and NHW and join forums. We strongly urge all residents to take a look as we are always keen for new members to join. Our meeting dates and times can be found on here and also on the community notice board in Morrison’s. We are hoping to hold events such as summer fetes and car boot sales and the more residents we have on board the more we’ll be able to do. So now you know that there are quite a few ‘Cardeans’ take a look on the website to see what’s going on and we hope to have regular updates in The Stanground Gazette.
Neighbourhood Watch Wants
YOU!
The Peterborough Neighbourhood Watch Association is urging Stanground residents to sign up to their local neighbourhood watch co-ordinator. Richard Taylor, Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator for Cardea said “People need to understand how important it is to be a part of their local group. It is a way of bringing the community together; to protect each other’s property and to provide a modern way of informing everyone what is going on in their local area.” The neighbourhood watch association also stressed the importance of signing up to their alerts system ‘OurWatch’. OurWatch is a service provided by the NHW to provide you with updates on Peterborough and your local area, keeping you informed all of the time. To sign up to the OurWatch system, visit the website at www.ourwatch.org.uk and enter your postcode to find your nearest co-ordinator.

Have you noticed what a lot there has been in the news recently about sugar and how bad too much of it is for us? Each year I try to do something for Lent. Usually I give up alcohol but a few years ago I tried giving up chocolate and that was so very much harder, for me at least. I realised that I was actually really quite addicted, not to chocolate itself, but to the sugar it contains. Since then I have been so much more aware of the effects of sugar. Lent begins on 5th March which is Ash Wednesday. Some people come to church to get a cross marked on their foreheads using ashes as a sign that they want to do something different in the 40 days that lead up to Easter. For some it is giving something up and for others it is doing something extra. The Ashing services are at 12noon at St Michael’s Mace Road and 7pm at St John’s Church Street. I like to think of it as a time of turning to God, a kind of spiritual spring clean. If you are curious about it, just come and see.

Sport
Player retention in youth football This picture was taken in 2008, seven of these players still play for us here at Powerleague Colts. Of the other seven, I know of 2 who still play for another team. It would be nice to think that the remaining five may still play football, either for fun or for other teams. It would also be nice to think that they may even have taken up a different sport and play that on a regular basis. If however, they haven’t carried on playing, or taken up another sport, what reasons could be behind that? In a recent survey of participants in grass roots football, 84% cited “poor facilities” as one of their greatest concerns. The pitches that our children have to learn to play on are shockingly bad, learning to control a ball on a pitch that resembles the Somme in 1916 is almost impossible. The entire city of Liverpool apparently has just one full-size third generation pitch, and that belongs to Liverpool FC. The FA estimates that 1.5 million adults and youngsters want to play but have nowhere to do so. The Football Foundation reckons the £1bn it’s spent since 2000 upgrading pitches and changing rooms equates to just 5% of what needs to be done to bring the entire national infrastructure up to the standard of some countries on the continent. Up and down the country matches are being cancelled, children are having to play on water-logged, muddy or even dangerous surfaces where skill and technique are rendered even harder to master, and then being put off from turning up at all by often having to get changed outside. Think of the negative impact that has on the numbers who play the game, and the way the game is played. Think of the number of potential players lost from the
Powerleague Colts sport, who could have gone on to become something special had they just had the chance to play on a decent surface, or had a pitch nearby to play on at all. Think of the wages of Wayne Rooney and others in the Premiership who could build a full size 3G pitch for a local community with just one weeks pay. As we face another week of heavy rain and abandoned games, I suggest that the seven lads from the picture above who are still playing should maybe take up swimming, or exchange their boots for flippers.

Taxation
Question: I have received a new PAYE Notice of Coding for the tax year 2014-15 from HMRC – what should I do with this? Answer: You have received a notice of coding if you have two or more jobs at the same time, income from two or more pensions or receive a pension and have a job and you may receive more than one notice. PAYE codes are issued so that you pay the correct amount of tax in the tax year. You should check that these show the correct personal allowances and deductions or restrictions and contact the tax office straight if they are incorrect, or pass it to your advisor or to us to check. This will ensure you do not pay too much tax or too little in the tax year, but it can be corrected later.
News:
The Chancellor has announced that the 2014 Budget will be held on Wednesday, 19 March 2014. This will be George Osborne’s fifth and follows on from his Autumn Statement of December 2013. Dates to remember: 19 March PAYE due for the tax month ended 5 March 2014 if paying by cheque or 22 March electronically. 5 April 2014 is the end of the current tax year - have you considered the above tax planning points?

The Woolpack This is one of Peterborough’s oldest surviving pubs – dating back from 1711. It has changed over the years, but remains very much a traditional village pub. It caters for most people’s palette’s; from flavoured Sambucas to a large range of wines, beers, ciders & real ales with a frequently changing guest ale & scrumptious cider . A range of home cooked foods are available with light lunches & tasty snacks served 12-2.30pm (3pm on Sun) with the evening menu of traditional fayre served from 6-8pm Mon-Sat. Their signature dish is a mouth watering steak & kidney pie & their current special is Haggis, Neeps and Tatties. As a family pub, children under 14 are welcomed until 9pm daily along with your four legged friend.
If you have any pub news, please let me know by contacting: roz@stangroundgazette.co.uk
There is an extensive garden; with seats in a covered area to the top and a long grassed garden with wooden seating leading down to the river side mooring – perfect for a pint whilst watching the boats go by on warmer days. If you are lucky enough to own a boat, stop by & moor up!
There are frequent music events including live bands, acoustic sing-alongs & karaoke. Live sports fixtures are shown, with football fans welcomed for drinks on their way to the match. The Landlady, Linda, holds popular mini beer & cider festivals which have become a regular calendar feature. These sell 1/3 pint samples – ideal for working out which ones are the tastiest! Watch this space for the date of next one!

New dawn for Broadway club Attica VIP is changing direction for 2014 and seeking to attract many new faces through its doors. It’s an exciting new venture for the local nightclub. Committed to celebrating all genres of music, the club now hosts two live music nights: Kookie Tuesdays and Attica Live, a showcase for local bands to perform on stage. There is also an early doors cocktail bar, and a re-launch of many great offers. Manager John Scriven said: “We have learned from past mistakes and turned the corner. It’s a beautiful venue, offering a friendly, relaxing evening for everyone to enjoy.” With many events planned for the summer, it could be time to put Attica on your list of places to go in Peterborough for a great night out.

Beef Wellington
This is one dinner party classic that deserves a revival. Not only does it look and taste spectacular, but it’s surprisingly simple, and can be prepared ahead of time, ready to eat for any occasion. In my house there will be baked and roasted vegetables and plenty of meat roasts too - not just ribs of beef and loins of pork but more economical alternatives too. When cooked correctly these ‘cheaper’ joints can be equally as tasty. A firm favourite at home, here is my take on Beef Wellington.
Food & drink Recipe Ingredients 1/2 lb mushroom 1/2 onion 2 tb butter Salt and pepper 4 oz canned foie gras pate 1 tb oil 1-1/2 lb beef tenderloin Salt and pepper; to taste 1 pack frozen puff pastry
Serves 4.
Method 1 - Puree the mushrooms and onions together in a food processor. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat, add the mushroom and onion mixture and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is dry. Add salt and pepper to taste and mash in the pate. Transfer the stuffing to a bowl and chill in the refrigerator. 2 - Heat the oil in a skillet over high heat. Add the beef and sear on all sides. Remove the beef from the skillet and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place in the refrigerator until cold. 3 - Roll out chilled puff pastry into a rectangle large enough to enclose the beef. Spread the dough with a generous layer of stuffing, place the beef on top and spoon another bit of stuffing on the beef. Wrap the pastry to enclose the beef and stuffing and place the Wellington in the refrigerator to chill for at least 15 minutes. 4 - Preheat oven to 2200C/2000Cfan/425F. Place Wellington in oven and immediately lower heat to 1800C/1600Cfan/350F. Roast for about 20 minutes. Serve with seasonal roast and steamed vegetables.

March
March is the month for when serious gardening begins so gardening tools at the ready!
Informative and helpful website - Home visits are our speciality
- Carpet - Wood - Laminate - Vinyl - Karndean - Sisal - Coir
In the vegetable plot continue to buy and chit seed potatoes and if you already have some chitted and the weather and soil conditions are suitable then you could plant them now but it is a good idea to protect them with fleece. Onions and shallots can also be planted but again be sure that the soil conditions are suitable and plant in a sunny position. Tomatoes, peppers and aubergine seeds can also be sewn this month providing that you have a propagator making sure that they receive plenty of light throughout growing otherwise they will grow tall and lanky. Make sure that your greenhouse for your tomatoes are clean and ready for planting during April. If the soil conditions permit, you can now take your first light cut from your lawn and if you have not done so already cut the remains of last year perennials and clean the growing area. Plant out strawberry plants and rooted strawberry runners and if you grow that wonderful and useful herb chives, now is the time to divide and replant those established clumps. A very good tip for this month is to sew some peas in an ordinary gutter drainpipe filled with compost and start them in the greenhouse. Once weather conditions are suitable the peas can be slid from the gutter into a small trench in the garden and make sure that you protect from birds. For those people with smaller gardens and wanting to grow peas, it is a good idea to grow climbing peas in a large container, caned and wired for them to climb. This method, saves space and looks quite decorative and the peas are really easy to pick and it is surprising as to how big a crop you can obtain. However, you must look for the best pea varieties and these come from Heritage seeds (older varieties) and are available from many suppliers on the internet. Finally, do not forget to fertilise your roses and it is a good idea to place charcoal in the bottom of your water butts to help keep the water sweet. Remember...

Learning to love loving to learn.
St Johns Primary School As the new Head teacher I am honoured to be part of Stanground St Johns Primary School. The school has the vision of; learning to love and loving to learn. The links with St Johns church and the diocese of Ely support this ethos of strong Christian values that teach children, through the bible, to learn to love irrespective of background, race or religion so that all are respected and treated equally. As a school we also believe in giving children the opportunities to love to learn in order to make it a lifelong process. The skills that they learn at Primary School equip them up for a future of being able to tackle anything with confidence and independence. We work with the families in our community to ensure that the children’s wellbeing is paramount and for the staff the success of the children reaching their potentials is paramount.

Divorce & Separation Cohabitation Disputes Pre-Nuptial Agreements Mediation Financial Matters Children Matters
For further information contact our local Family Law Specialist, Abby Smith
Protect Your Future Before Marriage or Cohabitation Nobody wants to think about what happens if their relationship ends unhappily, but preparation can prevent heartache and arguments at what will be a very stressful time – it is like an insurance policy. Many couples may have assets and money they wish to protect. Pre-nuptial agreements are prepared and signed before the wedding. Both parties should obtain independent legal advice on the terms and legal meaning of the agreement and it should be prepared at least 3 months before the wedding itself. A pre-nuptial agreement is not automatically legally binding in England & Wales but the views of the court are changing and each case is considered on its own individual circumstances. A pre-nuptial agreement shows what each party intended to happen if they were to ever separate and it is better than having no written agreement at all. Equally couples who choose to cohabit, but not marry, can protect their financial assets by preparing a Living Together Agreement.

March Bulletin from
CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE Every year, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service raise thousands of pounds for The Fire Fighters Charity – and we couldn’t do it without the support of residents so we would like to say a big thank you! This month, a number of fire stations across the county will be holding car washes so visit www.cambsfire.gov.uk or our social media channels to find out what stations near you are taking part. Registration is now open for the annual Ladies Driving Challenge on Sunday, May 11, at Alconbury Airfield. More than 300 women will get behind the wheel of super-sized vehicles and if you want to take part sign up quick! For more information and to register, email ldc@bedsfire.com or call (01234) 845130. Finally a huge thank you to all who supported our clothing bank challenge in January to see which station could collect the most unwanted textiles to raise cash for the charity – we’re eagerly awaiting the results. Make sure fire safety still stays at the forefront of your mind in March – and don’t forget to test your smoke alarm. To find out if your are eligible for a free home fire safety check, call 0800 917 99 94. Follow us: @cambsfrs /cambsfrs
Would you like to make a difference to someone’s life? Do you enjoy
knitting or crocheting? We’re looking for people to make baby hats for Berega Hospital, Tanzania where the babies often die from hypothermia as there aren’t the facilities to keep them warm. Volunteer UK doctors who work at this hospital say that lives would be saved if only the babies could be kept warm, so here’s our chance to help! The hats can be any colour, pattern or wool – they just need to be sized for a premature or newborn baby. Yaxley library has kindly agreed to have a collection box, along with hat patterns, so when you’ve finished a hat or two, just pop them in the box. We’ll send them to KOFIA, the charity that runs this wonderful scheme. If you can’t see the box, please do ask at the library desk. As this is a long term project we plan to be collecting hats for many months. Please help us to knit or crochet hats and save the lives of malnourished and premature babies - just by keeping them warm.
Light years away from saving money? We take a look at what has LED the way forward in energy efficiency... With soaring energy costs it is in all our interests to make savings wherever we can. Double glazing cavity wall insulation and loft insulation etc. are well known areas of energy conservation but how many of us look at our lighting costs. A lot of public money went into promoting the benefits of CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) These are fine in that they provide energy efficiency but the feedback from our customers here at The Lampshade Warehouse is that they are slow to warm up, they do not like the light they give and most of all they are not nice to look at. LED lighting (light emitting diodes) is the latest technology to provide household lighting. LED has been around for some years now and is most commonly seen in Xmas lights, car headlights and increasingly in street lighting
but relatively recently has the technology been developed to provide domestic light bulbs that are readily available to the public. Although the bulbs are more expensive the savings they provide more than compensate for the initial outlay. A “Which” report found bulbs cost anything between £4 and £40. Here in The Lampshade Warehouse we have created a range of LED bulbs all at £10 each. We have chosen the best bulb from various manufacturers offerings. When you consider that the lifetime of an LED bulb is in the region of 25 years and, for example, a 50watt halogen bulb can be replaced with a 3 watt LED bulb giving similar light output meaning that for every £1 spent on old tech lighting you can now spend 6p! Quite impressive I think you will agree.
The range we stock in our Westwood showroom consists of various types of candle bulbs and golf ball bulbs in all fittings as well as GU10 spots in warm white or cool white and now a direct replacement for G9 halogens all these can be seen and demonstrated at The Lampshade Warehouse Lighting Outlet, Westwood showroom. 28

Business Focus
Chromium Book Keeping
When I took my first accounts role allocating customer payment for a large telecoms company, I didn’t expect it to lead to running my own business! However, I was introduced to (and fell in love with) credit control, an often hated task, and discovered that good credit control actually builds and strengthens relationships. As I moved to smaller companies, my roles expanded as I took on extra responsibilities, so I decided to study accounting. Once qualified (AAT Level 3 Diploma) I chose a company name and designed a logo, finally taking the plunge and leaving my old job for Chromium Bookkeeping and haven’t looked back since! Before printing business cards I got a professional to improve the logo design, and I’m so glad I did – much less expensive than expected and far better than my own attempt. This taught me a valuable business lesson – saving money by doing something myself isn’t always wise. The hours spent designing my own logo showed me the value of getting it done professionally, and that became the focus of Chromium Bookkeeping – helping businesses owners by taking care of their books, tax/VAT returns, payroll (and credit control!) to free up time for customers and family. With free consultations and tailored packages, my aim is to allow my clients focus on what they do best.

Spread a layer of mulch over bare soil to retain moisture and reduce weed regeneration. Weed driveways and paths while you have the time to get on top of the garden.

Frosts can still be a hazard, coupled with the fierce March winds, it is essential to continue to protect vulnerable plants if a frost is forecast. Now may be time to have your trees looked at and remove the deadwood. Work can be carried out on most trees and has the benefit of looking good for the summer. With all the rain that we have been having this year we need to ensure our lawns are looked after in the right way. Keep off water logged lawns as much as possible. When the weather improves and the lawn has dried out enough you should cut the grass on the highest setting. Apply compost and seed to any bare patches that have developed. Edge the lawn with a half-moon to tidy up the edges. Keep an eye on pots and containers as they may need watering. Protect young shoots from slugs by applying slug repellent around the base. And remember to keep feeding the birds, they become accustomed to regular food. Scenic Gardens T: 01733860587 (Behind Dobbies Garden Centre).
