The Stanground Academy Charity Fashion Show On March 20, the Stanground Academy will be hosting their annual Charity Fashion Show. This fun-filled evening raises money for the Sue Ryder Foundation, with catwalk shows, dance acts, singers, stalls, raffles and refreshments.
Grab an oar for Thorpe Hall Hospice Neighbours, community groups, gym buddies and friends are being urged to jump in a boat to raise money for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. But not just any boat – a dragon boat. The hospice in Peterborough is the new official charity for the 2015 Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival. And that means there’s a chance to take part in a whole day of fun on the water while raising money for an important local cause. This year’s Festival will take place at Peterborough Rowing Club at Thorpe Meadows – within view of Thorpe Hall itself.
At the Stanground Academy the sixth form hairdressing and beauty students pride themselves on the hair and beauty services they offer to the public during their salon sessions. This year the VRQ level 2 and 3 students have produced a fashion show around the theme ‘a night at the movies’. The show will incorporate different looks from a wide range of films and will require all the students’ skills and expertise to prepare the models for the catwalk. In addition to the catwalk show, local companies will be selling and advertising their goods and services in the auditorium before and after the show. Staff expect the show to be bigger and better than last years. So if you are looking for a fun-filled evening head down and support your local school and students. Tickets prices: £3.00 for adults and £2.00 concessions. Tickets available on the door or in advance from the Stanground Academy main reception, Sports Centre reception and hairdressing salon.

COMMUNITY NEWS
The focus at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough is on quality of life – giving every patient the palliative care and support they need so they can spend their time as they choose. Thorpe Hall cares for and supports adults with active, progressive and advanced illnesses who may need help with managing symptoms such as relieving pain, or may require specialist end of life care. There is a team of specialist staff which means that they can work holistically with every patient, giving them exactly the help they need, when they need it.
G
Thorpe Hall is there for their patients’ families and loved ones too – providing ongoing support through the family support team. The day service centre is open to those with long-term conditions who come along on a regular basis to join in activities and outings, and exercise in the specially-adapted rooms. By the time of the event on Saturday, June 13 there will be just two weeks of the capital appeal – raising money for the building of the new in patient unit – to go. And that means it’ll be one of the last chances to get involved in this vitally important project. Up to 50 crews will be battling it out over the 200-metre course in qualifiers and finals while, bankside, there will be a host of activities to entertain teams and spectators between races. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment will be provided. Fancy dress is optional and all money raised on the day will go towards the Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal. Regional fundraising manager Lucy Squance says: “This year is a really exciting one for us as we look to open our new in patient unit and introduce new services into the community. We’d love to get as many people involved as possible in this event – what a perfect way for a sports team, group of friends, team of neighbours or workmates to have fun!” For further information please call the fundraising team on 01733 225999 or visit www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/peterborough
Tour of Cambridgeshire Bike Ride 132km Tour of Cambridgeshire offers perfect opportunity to raise money for Thorpe Hall If dry land is more your thing but you’re still keen to raise money for the Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal – how about entering the Tour of Cambridgeshire and seeking sponsorship for completion of the 132km bike race? This event on Sunday, June 7, is the UK’s first Gran Fondo – roads closed to other traffic – and a first for Cambridgeshire too. To find out how you can take part in this unique bike ride while raising money in support of the Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal speak to the hospice’s fundraising team on 01733 225999. First Responders visit Oakdale Primary School
Question:
By Charlotte Hamilton
I wish to set up my own limited company – can I do this myself?
There is nothing that beats the smile you get when you help someone in need. It is also an honour volunteering for East of England ambulance service because they really support and appreciate the time Community First Responders (CFR) provide for their service.
Answer: Yes you can, but a limited company must be properly created in accordance with company law requirements and registered with Companies House. This process is known as incorporation. Although a company formation agent, accountant, solicitor or chartered secretary can be used to incorporate the company in return for a fee; it is possible and relatively straightforward to set up the business yourself using the web incorporation service offered by Companies House. The fee for this service is only £15 (see www.companieshouse.gov.uk). However, you may wish to seek professional advice prior to setting up a company, as there are many factors to consider before doing so. This is something that we can assist you with. Tax: I would like to thank Mr Jackson from Stanground who enquired whether we knew the position regarding the transfer of personal allowances, as he thought many people were not aware of this. In the 2013 budget, then the amount was subsequently increased in the 2014 budget, it was announced that from the tax year 2015/16 couples, where neither partner is a higher or additional rate taxpayer, will be able to transfer £1,050 of their personal allowances to their spouse. Choosing to transfer £1,050 of the personal allowance will mean that one spouse or civil partner will pay tax on £1,050 less of their income and will be worth £210 to eligible couples. Taking the tax liabilities of a couple together can provide a financial benefit where one spouse/civil partner has an income less than their personal allowance. From 2016-17 the transferable amount will be 10 per cent of the basic personal allowance.
Being a community first responder is rewarding, especially being close by to emergencies and being able to assess and reassure the patient prior to the ambulance arriving. I approached Oakdale as the reception classes were learning about people who help us, including police, paramedics, nurses, and the fire service. It can be very daunting for children if an ambulance turns up at their home. It was a pleasure introducing ourselves at Oakdale School and leaving knowing their views of the ambulance service and CFRs were positive and they felt at ease with us. Kelvin Newton from Cardea Stanground, the other CFR that attended the school with me, owns his own First aid Company called Newton Medical. He showed the children how to dress wounds, and how we are there to make the patient comfortable prior to the ambulance arriving. Kelvin had made his own play dough which resembled a skin wound and the children were fascinated by it. The school have requested the ingredients so they can recreate his work for Halloween.
The lead option is that one party will apply on-line to transfer the allowance to their spouse or civil partner and HMRC will notify the recipient about the subsequent change in their PAYE tax code. HMRC recognises that some customers may need additional support to apply to transfer the allowance in which case means contacting them direct.

“There are some keen potential future CFRs, paramedics, police officers, firemen and nurses at Oakdale!” It was interesting to find how many children in the reception class actually knew the number to call for an emergency, they all had their hands up and a lot of them shouted out 999. This was really rewarding to know. They were also familiar with where their heart was and how it plays a big role in pumping blood containing oxygen around their body. We showed the children how we measure oxygen in the blood with the pulse oximeter and demonstrated how they can take their pulse manually; they were all taking part and were really keen to learn. Overall the visit to the school went really well and there are some keen potential future CFRs, paramedics, police officers, firemen and nurses at Oakdale!

Cardea First Responders fundraising day at Morrisons By Charlotte Hamilton
We had a fantastic day at Cardea Morrisons and are privileged to have so many community members supporting East of England ambulance service. We raised a few funds too! The governor of Oakdale School arrived to give his support. We are grateful for the very generous support from Morrisons, Cardea allowing us to use their lobby. We will be attending Southfields Primary School in the near future.

Stanground & Farcet C of E Churches
Bingo, Holy Communion and mothers! by The Revd Anne Shorter, Vicar of Stanground For many years we’ve had a fun evening of prize Bingo in the Church Hall on Mace Road at 7.30 on the first Saturday of each month. It’s a good chance to get together with some friends, or come along and make new ones. Bryant Latham is the host and he has a team of helpers who serve refreshments. No need to book, just come along. I recently heard a vicar telling how he had been doing hospital chaplaincy in a London hospital. Part of his job was to ask people to visit on a Sunday and offer Holy Communion. He was sharing some of the replies he got from patients. ‘No thank you, I’m church of England’, and ‘No thank you, I’m vegetarian,’ were among them. For many people Holy Communion is completely outside their experience, kind of scary and strange. But when you understand it, and
take part in it, you realise that it is a gift from God to help us come closer to him and be blessed. I wonder whether some of you reading this might have been part of a church long ago and enjoyed sharing fellowship in this way and maybe you miss it. People from our churches are happy to come to the homes of those who can’t get out on Sunday mornings and share a little service with you. If this is something you’d like, please just give me a phone call. Finally, a reminder: Mother’s Day is on March 15. It is always on a Sunday because it originated as a church festival, so you are invited to keep up the tradition and join us in celebrating our Mums. 9.30 at St John’s for informal Holy Communion, and 11.15 at St Michael’s for All Age Worship. With Christian love and prayers to you all.

v Method Grease a brownie tin and line it with baking parchment. Leave the paper sticking up at the sides to make it easier to lift the brownie out when it’s cooked. 1. Put the chocolate, milk, butter, honey, maple syrup and vanilla seeds in a saucepan. Warm over a gentle heat, stirring regularly, until everything has melted and you have a rich, glossy-looking batter. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the cocoa powder.
Healthy alternatives Recipe Sugar-free Brownies Here is a healthy alternative for an after school or mid-morning snack
2. Allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes and then beat in the eggs. Finally add the flour and baking powder. 3. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake it in the oven for about 15 minutes until it is just set in the middle but still nice and gooey. 4. Remove the tin from the oven and use the baking paper to help you slide the whole brownie on to a cooling rack as soon as possible so it doesn’t continue to cook. 5. Cut into squares when cool. Makes 15 squares.

Success for Pumas U11 Black & U12 Red teams make great progress in knock out competition! Not satisfied with their excellent run in the PFA cup, currently at the quarter-final stage, the U11 Black side put in a stellar performance against league challengers Werrington, coming out victors with a great 4-0 win. This put the Blacks into the semi-final of the Hereward cup. A great performance and superb accolade for the whole club. So the U11 Blacks are attacking trophies on three fronts, with League and two cups still prizes on the horizon. A great team, playing great football. The U12 Red side too are pursuing the club’s first big trophy to add to the Yaxley tournament win of the U9 Reds last Summer. The U12 Reds won 4-0 against Parkside to take them into the quarter final of the U12 Hereward cup against Crowland with a semi-final place the prize. But they too have other irons in the fire. Although a league title looks unlikely, the boys have made great progress in the Huntingdonshire County Cup, currently with a challenging quarterfinal game against Yaxley Blue.
Little Scrummers Rugby Club There’s so much fun when your active under sixes joins Little Scrummers Rugby Club. The exciting, outdoor lessons on Saturday mornings can be made into fun family activities whenever and wherever you want! You can practice what has been taught in your garden, at the park, at the beach, in fact anywhere there is an open space. It really does involve the whole family as tag-rugby is a safe non-contact form of the rugby game, and anyone can play it at any age! At the weekly 45-55-minute sessions, the children also gain confidence, improve their motor skills, communication and behaviour. The fun-filled sessions are led by fully-qualified coaches who play and/or coach at their own local, rugby clubs. Learning sport at an early age is essential and it is proven to have a positive educational impact; the children learn to work as a team, improve their skills and it even prepares them for better concentration and understanding of given instructions at school.
A great success story for two great sides at the club. Well done to all concerned for their efforts. Success in the form of silverware is great, but at this club they pride themselves on ensuring that the players keep developing and improving each week and that too is great success in football.
So, if you have pre-school children who have loads of energy, who love running around and mixing with other children, sign up for a free trial session and see what you all have to gain!
The clubs is on the lookout for two new experienced coaches to take on two new teams at the club and deliver further successes next season. Call Ciaran McAuley, chairman, on 07713106898.

Moving into their Whittlesey premises in 2008, they started with the aim of offering quality and a different approach. Decker bus cover school trips, contracts & private hire anywhere and also have a Party Bus for parties, weddings, hen dos, etc., and Playbus for children’s parties.
“
I recently hired the party bus for my 7-year-old’s birthday party and was so pleased with the service I received and the fun the children had. The bus had two floors of fun activities with a ball pool and slide. The bus also hosts a music system, candy floss machine, popcorn machine and games console. The driver of the bus was amazing, he kept the children fully entertained and I hardly had to lift a finger. The children all went away happy with a packed party bag.

As a school, they want to create a buzz about physical activities, where every child feels confident and ready to participate. Staff ensure that all the children are given the opportunity to take part in competitive sports and activities and instil the belief that trying your best and having fun are two of the most important factors when competing. The partnership with Stanground Academy has given the children the opportunity to take part in a variety of events including Multi-Skills Festivals and the Year 5/6 Swimming Gala last month. The School is also lucky to be working with Matt Milner from Premier Sport – the leading children’s coaching company in the UK. Matt provides one hour of high-quality PE to each of the classes every week. In addition, the children have the opportunity to attend lunchtime and after school clubs led by Matt, free of charge. Staff are looking forward to the year ahead as they continue to develop the whole School approach whilst working alongside Stanground Academy and Premier Sport.

HOME & GARDEN
Your March garden Even though the weather can still be wintry, it’s time to start working in the garden. • As temperatures begin to warm and plants emerge from dormancy, slowly remove protective mulches. Beware of removing mulches too soon since hard freezes are still possible. • Transplant roses, shrubs and ornamental trees before the leaf buds open. • • Walking on wet soil will cause it to compact. So after the spring thaw wait until the ground dries to start working in your flower and vegetable beds. • Apply slow release fertilizer to shrubs and perennials.
It is important that your greenhouse is properly ventilated during early spring when fluctuating temperatures are common. Open the windows on mild days and close them before nightfall.
To repair bare spots in lawns combine five shovels of sand, one shovel of sterilized topsoil, one shovel of grass seed and one cup of slow release fertilizer. Cover bare spots with this mixture, tamp down and water.
• Transplant and divide snowdrops (galanthus) and snowflakes (leucojum) after the flowers fade, but the foliage is still green.
• Plant parsley in your herb garden. • Get your lawn mower ready for the growing season. Replace the spark plugs, clean the air filter, remove grass and debris clogging the fins of the engine cover, and take it in to a small engine repair shop to have the blade sharpened and balanced.
• Clean water features and fountains. Make sure pumps and lights are working properly. Remove leaf guards.
• Feed peonies with a low nitrogen fertilizer when they are about 2-3 inches tall.
• Check your compost pile. Turn it every two weeks and keep it moist, but not wet.
• Most perennials bloom for a two to four week period. When adding new perennials to your garden go for those that have great foliage as well as blooms or extend the flowering time by choosing a mix of early-, mid- and lateblooming varieties.
• Set up an outdoor thermometer and a rain gauge. Keep a journal of the weather and when plants start to bloom.
24

• Order bulbs such as crocosmia, eucomis, gloriosa, kniphofia and lycoris for interesting summer bloom.

HOME & GARDEN
Love your lawn this year
GreenThumb, the UKs leading lawn treatment service, has a new and knowledgeable team looking after lawns in the Peterborough area.
Sisters Sarah and Jo Parish took over the GreenThumb business in August 2014 and are still busy getting to know hundreds of existing customers in the area. Both come from horticultural and agricultural backgrounds and have two experienced lawn care technicians, Jim and Simon, working with them.
Go careful on your first cut – raise the height of your first cut to just ‘top’ the grass – too low will stress the grass just when it needs encouraging.
GreenThumb treatments are wide ranging and cover everything from regular feed and weedkill treatments to pest and disease control and tackling the causes of moss. Treatments start from just £15 a quarter depending on lawn size and takes away all the stress and hassle of doing it yourself. GreenThumb even offers full direct debit programmes for ultimate convenience. Here are Sarah’s top tips for spring: • Go careful on your first cut – raise the height of your first cut to just ‘top’ the grass
– too low will stress the grass just when it needs encouraging. • Check your blade is sharp – blunt blades shred the grass and don’t give a clean cut. This may cause a brown, bruised appearance and can lead to the onset of disease. • Not too short... or too long – never cut less than 25mm (1”). Mowing little and often is by far the best. • Look out for irregular, sickly looking patches – leatherjackets can devastate a lawn as they chomp through the roots. If you suspect a problem, give GreenThumb a call. • Lawns don’t like shade – border plants, shrubs and trees all have a habit of encroaching on the lawn and denying it light... time to get the secateurs out!

STANGROUND BLOG
Pet Insurance
I was thinking... I’ll begin this month with a confession, I have a problem. I’m addicted to binging. Binge watching TV shows on Netflix that is. I’ll never admit I have a problem with binging on alcohol. Binge watching TV programmes on Netflix is simultaneously satisfying and depressing. For example, I started watching Community yesterday, which is satisfying, but at the time of writing this I’m 21 episodes in and that number is only that low because I took a break to watch the Superbowl, this is depressing. Community is really good though, watch it. Now. It truly is remarkable how much time you can lose to Netflix; I dread to think of how much time in total I’ve spent watching it. Many a time I’ve come home from work and picked something to watch only to realise it’s now midnight and I need to be up again in six hours.
Getting the best deal for you & your pet
As pet owners we never want to have to make a decision on treatment for our furry family members based on cost, we want to do what is going to be best for them. However this can often be expensive, for example a broken leg can cost over £2,000 to fix, or a lifelong condition such as diabetes or a heart problem cost over £60 per month for treatment.
The thing is, I never intended to even watch TV programmes when I first got Netflix, I originally got it because I was too much of a cheapskate to buy films when they came out, instead I intended to be sufficiently lazy to wait until they eventually became available. The opposite of this occurred.
For many of us these kinds of costs would be difficult to cope with (and they certainly put our own free healthcare in perspective), however sometimes families have no alternative but to make heartbreaking decisions about their pets, that they would otherwise not choose because of the financial implications.
Perhaps the worst thing about the whole binge watching thing is how Netflix likes to remind you exactly what you’re doing, about every four episodes a message will pop up asking if you’re still watching. A polite enough message if you take it at face value, however I suspect the subtext of this message is “Are you really still watching this? Go and do something else”, a message I of course ignore. Multiple times a night.
This is where pet insurance comes in and is why vets tend to encourage you to have your pet covered. But beware, not all pet insurance is equal and if you don’t know to ask the right questions you could have a nasty surprise when you come to claim.
I suppose my habit came to a height during a holiday to Canada a couple of years ago. Many of the group I was with complained about the slow and sluggish internet speeds we were getting in our hotel, making the internet borderline unusable. Coincidentally during the times people experienced these slow speeds, I was watching Netflix from my laptop. Yes, I managed to use an entire hotel’s bandwidth for my own selfish binge watching needs. Despite my borderline addiction to this particular streaming service, I can’t really recommend binge watching TV series enough, it’s a great way to kill a large amount of time easily and enjoyably. Also, I know this whole article has basically been a massive advert for Netflix, if anyone reading this is in anyway connected to Netflix management, please get in contact with the magazine, who can pass on my details for any royalty cheques they may wish to send me. I could use the money, my motorbike gets increasingly unreliable as each week passes. By the way I’m on episode 25 of Community now, proving how distracted I get from doing things when I’m watching TV. by Jack Moakes

PET CARE The cost of pet insurance will obviously vary dependant on the type of pet you have, as well as things like its breed and age. Much like car insurance, the range of things covered by pet insurance can also differ, making a policy that looked like a good deal based on its cost per month, a bad deal when for example your pet’s emergency treatment costs £2,000, but the policy limit (even for an accident) is a lot lower than this. Here are a few other things you may want to ask when looking for the best price and cover for your pet: n Many policies on the market offer cover only for a limited amount of time and only a single ‘pot of money’ from which to claim. Will the policy cover your pet if it contracts an ongoing illness, and will the policy cover your pet’s treatment for life? n Furthermore, if your pet is unlucky enough to suffer from multiple unrelated conditions in the same year, will you be able to claim on each separately. Ask if the policy’s claim limits apply to each unrelated condition and if they recharge every year? n You should also ask what the excess for any policy would be, as most vets will need this paid at time of treatment.

Hairstylist Eugene Souleiman did the impossible backstage at Stella McCartney: He created a crimped style that’s actually cool (not in a funny, throwback way), sleek and wearable. The secret is to only crimp the very top layer of hair in random sections as the minute you crimp the layers underneath, the hair gets too big and you get that ‘80s thing, then pull it all into a tight, low ponytail.
FLYAWAY FREE Want hair as slick and smooth as it gets, without looking at all greasy or oily. The trick? Hairspray and a Kabuki brush! Hairspray works just like gel, only it doesn’t flake or give that wet look. You can spray it on a makeup brush and use it to brush flyaways back for the latest sleekest looks.

In 2015, Love to Ride, CTC and Cyclescheme will invite 20,000 businesses to take part in the first National Workplace Cycle Challenge. The Love to Ride Challenge will be a competition between organisations across the UK to see who can get the most staff to try riding a bike. The National Workplace Cycle Challenge will run from 8-28 June and will be a major annual event in the cycling calendar. The aim is to get as many people as possible to ride a bike and log their trip during the Challenge period. Organisations will compete on local and national league tables to see who can get the highest proportion of their staff to ride for 10 minutes. They will be able to compete between offices in different locations around the UK and against similarly sized companies. It’s free for organisations and individuals to take part. There are six size categories for organisations and a range of individual and team prizes. Local Authorities can sign up to support and boost participation in their area, whatever budget they have to promote cycling. The organisers want every LA to be able to join in and have drawn up a range of options from fully bespoke programmes to a Freemium package with no frills. Love to Ride have run Workplace Cycle Challenges on three continents and engaged 110,000 people. Over the last 12 years they have developed a unique behaviour change model and accompanying website and mobile app. Cyclescheme started nine years ago and has provided over 450,000 bicycles to commuters through a tax-free benefit scheme.

Another community team effort, spearheaded by Safe Local Trades
DIY SOS answered for Dementia Centre
Safe Local Trades volunteers answer ‘DIY SOS’ for resource centre garden revamp. Volunteers from Safe Local Trades in Peterborough joined forces in their own DIY SOS-style transformation project for the city’s newly opened Dementia Resource Centre. The facility on Lincoln Road opened its door last September, providing a hub for dementia support; offering information, advice, activity groups and training for carers. But it was when the centre appealed for help in transforming a patch of wasteland into a community garden – where patients and groups can plant flowers and grow vegetables – that Safe Local Trades came to the rescue.
Rob Henchy, interim commissioning manager, Adult Social Care, Peterborough City Council said: “This act of kindness and generosity, reminiscent of the BBC’s DIY SOS programme, is thanks to individuals from Oakfield UK for excavating the land and from Style Home Improvements for laying the paving slabs, and of course to Travis Perkins for donating the materials for the ground works.
“A huge thank you from everyone at the Dementia Resource Centre to you all and especially to Eileen Le Voi from Safe Local Trades Peterborough for making this happen.” As the Dementia Resource Centre were so grateful, they erected a plaque on the wall thanking Safe Local Trades and their members for donating their time and labour.
The centre is run by the Alzheimer’s Society and funded by Peterborough City Council.
Following an appeal to members by Safe Local Trades director Eileen Le Voi, free materials and labour by generous volunteers have led to the revamping of the area to create a calming and relaxing space. Among those offering their help were Travis Perkins in Ivatt Way, Peterborough – who provided all the building materials free of charge. The design and transformation of the garden was thanks to Safe Local Trades’ landscape experts, members Oakfield UK and Style Home Improvements. Safe Local Trades director Eileen Le Voi, who coordinated the project, said: “These generous members had no hesitation in offering their services, skills and time to this remarkable and very worthwhile project – I can’t thank them enough. “The end result looks wonderful and we all hope that the patients and activity groups using the garden will get enormous pleasure from it.” To find vetted and approved local traders, go to www.safelocaltrades.com or call 01733 530019
