Brown bin subscriber? It’s time to renew!
stangroundcommunity
As gardens begin to burst into a spring bloom, Peterborough households are reminded that it’s time to sign up to the 2017/18 garden waste collection service.
H
ouseholds can renew their subscription or sign up from Monday 3 April 2017 for £39. This will cover fortnightly garden waste collections from 22 May 2017 to 18 May 2018. For people thinking about using the brown bin service for the first time, it’s simple to sign up and means quick and easy disposal of garden waste. You are able to put grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, weeds, leaves and old flowers and plants in the brown bin. Councillor Gavin Elsey, Cabinet Member for Waste and Street Scene, said, “We’re delighted that so many households - over 21,000 now - subscribed to the brown bin scheme last year. However, if you don't want to sign up, there are other options to dispose of your garden waste such as at the Household Recycling Centre in Dogsthorpe."
Wildlife Trust
celebration of Lovely Lattersey at 30! Sunday 28 May 11am–3pm Residents can pay the annual brown bin fee or subscribe for the first time online at peterborough.gov.uk/brownbins or by telephone on 01733 747474 Existing garden waste subscribers will also be written to in the coming weeks with details of how to renew. In December and January, collections will be monthly.
Family Open Day at Lattersey Nature Reserve, celebrating 30 years of Whittlesey’s only local Nature Reserve. Open to all: guided walks, wildlife trails, wildlife art and craft activities, face painting, willow weaving, wildlife quiz, refreshments, displays activities for all.
This local nature reserve was once a quarry for brick clay and 'borrow' material used to build the local railway. The abandoned pits filled with water, providing a haven for the wildlife that was forced into the area as the surrounding fenland was drained and ploughed.

MONEYMATTERS
by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants
Willow Driver Training
Do you have any tax or business questions? If so, email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.
Mandatory digital record keeping and reporting for businesses will be phased in from April 2018. Unincorporated businesses with turnovers above the VAT threshold will be the first to make quarterly reports. Making Tax Digital (MTD) aims to create one digital account for each taxpayer - incorporating all of your taxes. Quarterly filing obligations will be imposed for businesses and landlords, with a view to enabling you to track your business transactions as and when they occur. At present, there is no plans to change the tax payment dates, although a voluntary ‘pay as you go’ system will be introduced. From April 2018, unincorporated businesses (self-employed, sole traders and partnerships) and landlords with an annual turnover above the VAT threshold (currently £85,000) will be required to keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates. From April 2019, unincorporated businesses and landlords with turnover below the VAT threshold will need to comply with the new rules. All incorporated businesses and landlords (limited companies) will be required to meet the MTD filing requirements from April 2020. Those with an annual turnover of less than £10,000 will be exempt from digital record keeping and quarterly updates unless they choose to enrol. If your accounting year end is 5 April, your turnover is over £85,000, your first quarterly update will be for the period 6 April 2018 to 5 July 2018. However, if your year end is 31 March, your first quarterly update will therefore be from 1 April 2019 to 30 June 2019 - a delay of one year. At the moment as we understand the position, after four quarterly updates have been submitted, there is a period of 10 months for the reconciliation of end of year accounts and final submission of any adjustments or further claims necessary. We believe that, for most clients, MTD will be a positive transition, which should simplify reporting, making taxation more efficient and accurate through the use of digital tax accounts – we just have to get over the transition period. How we manage and budget for this change will depend on the software available and we will be working closely with our clients to ensure a smooth transition.
Due to recent successful driving tests Willow Driver Training now has lesson times available for new pupils.

Peterborough Artists
Open Studios 2017 Inspirational art in homes and studios throughout the city of Peterborough and surrounding villages.
W
e are really excited to announce that one of our new venues this year for open studios is the Thistle Drive Centre in Stanground and four of our artists will be showcasing their work there. The Centre is located in Wessex Close, Stanground and has been running for a while now, by Lindsay Roberts. Meeting Lindsay for the first time, I could sense her passion and energy for the centre and the local community. The Tea Room, which not only serves up a lovely cuppa but also delicious slices of cakes, will be celebrating two years in July. While the Community Room, which offers lively art and craft workshops, celebrates a year in July also. There’s also an outdoor space which has had plants donated by Dobbies Garden Centre. The artists showing their work at Thistle Drive Centre are: Anne Roberts - a mixed media artist who works in Painting, Drawing, Encaustic Wax and showing with PAOS for the first time. Paul Saunders - a creative photographer - who specialises in Digital art, Photography and Photo Restoration. Mark Lonnie - a print maker - who enjoyed some positive results showing his work with PAOS for the first time last year. Sanae Dvorjetz - another mixed media artist, works in Painting, Drawing and Printmaking - showed her work
last year with PAOS at the City College. Opening time: 10am – 3pm. (Time varies for each venue so please check our brochure or our website).
About PAOS / Celebrating 17 years PAOS is a membership group of local, talented artists who live or work in the Greater Peterborough/PE postcode area. The organisation was started in 2000 by two artists and has grown in strength over the years. Our artists open their homes, studios, galleries and often gardens, to showcase their work during three separate weekends for Open Studios. This usually takes place between June and July each year. This year, we have a total of 93 individual artists exhibiting at 41 locations. You will have the opportunity to see many art forms including: textiles, jewellery, ceramics, mosaics, digital art, printmaking and painting in its many forms – something for everyone! We are privileged to have so many talented artists working across a wide range of medium on our doorstep, so please take the opportunity to support them during the Open Studios 2017 weekends.
Free prize draw
Following on from the success of last year’s prize draw, we are
again offering visitors to our events the chance to win £100 worth of vouchers to spend on an artist(s) of your choice. You need to visit 8 or more venues to enter and collect a sticker in your brochure from each venue – see full details on how to take part on pages 5 & 6 in our brochure. These can be found at any of our venues. On our website and in our brochure, you will find details of the artists, their locations and opening times, together with contact details and a brief overview of their artistic disciplines. You will also find a helpful map in the center pages to help you plan your journey. Full artist details and an online version of the Directory is also available on our website www.paos.org.uk.
What to expect
You will get a warm welcome at all of our venues, many of which are the artists’ own homes. In some, you will be able to look around the gardens and/or enjoy refreshments, so look for the symbols in our brochure next to the artist’s information. In some venues, there will be more than one artist exhibiting. Sometimes, you will be invited into the artist’s studio to see work in progress as well as finished work; in other venues you will just see the finished art on display. You will be able to talk to the artists about their work
and methods and in some venues, you will be able to see demonstrations. There will be work for sale wherever you go. Entry is free and there will never be any obligation to buy. We ask that you respect the venues wherever you go, bearing in mind that you will often be in the artist’s private home. Please note, that whilst cash and cheques are usually acceptable, a few artists may accept cards.
Access
As most venues are private homes, disabled access may be limited so if in doubt, please telephone the artists in advance to discuss your requirements. Tony Nero

Sharing the message of Jesus
Little People UK (LPUK) was co-founded in January 2012 by actor Warwick Davis, his wife Samantha and a group of individuals with the same goal: to offer friendship and support to people with dwarfism, their families and friends and helping build a positive future for those individuals. Since its inception, LPUK has become a registered charity and an essential resource for the social, medical and financial needs of the little people community in the UK. To date, it has attracted over 300 members, along with support from highly respected doctors and physiotherapists with a particular interest in helping individuals with dwarfism. Over five years, LPUK has: held Annual Conventions, along with other smaller events/workshops throughout the year, created a new website, developed an Equipment Loan Scheme and released a guidebook on DLA/PIP transition. Delegates also attended the 2016 International Dwarfism Leadership Summit in Berlin. LPUK relies solely on fundraisers to sustain the support we offer our members - every

We have also been learning about how tadpoles grow into frogs and looking at other life cycles. The Baby unit have also enjoyed being out in the garden, they are enjoying exploring different sensory play and getting messy. The children have enjoyed celebrating Easter. We have made Easter egg pictures to decorate the nursery and take home for our families. We also had great fun searching for all the Easter eggs in the garden left by the Easter Bunny! We are now taking bookings for babies up to pre-school age to start with us from September. From September 2017, we will be offering 30 hours funding for eligible 3 year olds.
Two children from Southfields Primary School, Kieran and Alexis Holland, asked if they could organise an Easter egg collection for eggs to be delivered initially to all the care homes in Stanground. The parents, staff and children have been so generous and children have delivered eggs to residents in Kingfisher Court, Nelson Place, Tuckers Court and The Tudors Care Homes. Because of the amount of eggs donated, they have also
been donated to Stanground Fire Station and to the Amazon Ward at Peterborough City Hospital. Well done and a huge thank you to all our amazing parents, staff and pupils for the fantastic response to the appeal.

Stanground Baptist Church
There are two things coming up that I hope you will enjoy. The first is Godparents Sunday on 30 April in both of our churches (9.30 at St John’s and 11.15 at St Michael’s). It's specially for you and your Godchildren or Godparents. It will be a lovely opportunity to remember the special bond you have with your Godparents (whatever age you are). Please accept this as an invitation to come along. Then in May, Stanground Churches are joining with churches all over the world for nine days of prayer, based on the prayer Jesus taught us - The Lord’s Prayer. The event is called Thy Kingdom Come and lasts nine days - from 25th May to 4th June. I expect most of you will know the words of The Lord’s Prayer off by heart, but lots
of people don’t know it. These powerful words came from Jesus to help us to pray and the more I pray (not just say them), the more I realise that almost anything I want to pray can be covered by this short prayer. It can go right deep into so many situations. We’d love you to come and join us to explore praying in words, or actions or silence. St Michael's will be open on Saturday 28th from 9am - 9pm and John’s will be open on 31 May, 1st and 2nd June from 5-6.30 in the evenings. There will be a host of different ways to pray, or you can just sit and enter the amazing stillness that comes in places where people pray. To find out more search: StangroundCofEChurches.
May God bless and keep you, Anne

Do you need help to neuter your cat? Are you a cat lover? Have you acted on impulse and taken on a cat that you've seen advertised on social media badly in need of a new home, or from a friend who can't keep it any longer? Your heart may have got the better of you and not being able to bear the thought of this poor cat being homeless, you're off to collect your new family addition. You probably think, ‘well, it doesn't cost much to feed a cat', but I often wonder whether people would think twice before buying or taking on a new pet if they stopped to consider the animal’s average life expectancy and calculated the real cost of responsible pet ownership. We see and hear all too often that once the new pet arrives, sadly so do the problems, an expense that many can ill afford and haven't taken out pet insurance. So, if you’ve made a new addition to your family by getting a cat or kitten, you will need to make sure that you’re not going to land yourself with a whole litter of kittens. Neutering is one of the most important things you
should do for your cat’s long term health and welfare. There are many reasons why you should neuter your cat. Un-neutered cats wander and are more likely to be involved in road accidents, male cats can become more territorial when not neutered and this leads to fighting (potential risk of FIV disease) and spraying. Around 16 years ago, (2001) Cats Protection were called in to help neuter a thriving feral colony around the Thistle drive area. Descendants of these cats still wander round Stanground as strays today. This could have been avoided if the original few cats had been neutered early on. With the average cost of a male neuter being around the £40 mark and £50 upwards for a female, this cost is something that people on low income or benefits are often unable to afford.
Cats Protection offer an assisted financial neutering help scheme - Please call us on 0345 371 2750 to find out more. Registered charity 203644

Freemasons donation helps vulnerable children in Peterborough The NSPCC’s Peterborough Service Centre was given a boost thanks to a donation from local Freemasons. Craig Bunday, the former Worshipful Master of Fitzwilliam Masonic Lodge in Bretton, visited the service centre to donate £610 to the child protection charity. The money will go directly to the centre which works with children and young people who have been abused or are at risk of sexual exploitation in Peterborough. Chris Bunday said: “We understand the NSPCC is a large
charity, but we wanted to directly support the Peterborough Service Centre and raise money for the good work they do in the city.” Sarah Lambley, the NSPCC’s Community Fundraising Manager for Peterborough, said, “More than 80% of our income comes from individual fundraising and giving, so this generous donation will help us carry out our substantial work of helping children every day here in Peterborough.”

May
The days and nights are drawing out, the beer gardens are getting sunny and again, we have two Bank Holidays to enjoy this month. We have bands a plenty to enjoy, including: special acoustic sets, open mic nights, spoken word evenings and quizzes. Iron Fist looks like an interesting band to watch at The Heron, described as 'the ultimate 80's rock parody band!' If you fancy a dance, you could check out The Dizzy Miss Lizzy's, fronted by Gizz Butt, at The Swiss Cottage or sing along with Matt Zilch & Spike Smith at The Woolie.
The Heron Meri said that they had an awesome Peterborough Scooter Club Egg Run. The Heron also held a charity day to raise money to purchase a nebuliser for the Cystic Fibrosis unit at PDC. Although their target was to raise cash to purchase a single nebuliser, the generous customers and staff at the Heron managed to raise enough money to be able to purchase 4 of them! Well done. The Heron will be holding a WI meeting on 3 May from 7pm. There is a range of live music happening throughout the month. The Heron has a spacious outside area to enjoy in the sun.
The Woolpack Following on from the fantastic packed out Sunday afternoon session that Spike Smith & Matt Zilch recently played, Linda has brought them back during May. The duo played a very informal acoustic set through a wide range of musical genres. There was a lovely atmosphere, with all ages joining in the singing along. They will be performing from 4-6pm on Sunday 21 May.
Why not make an afternoon of it & have one of their home cooked roasts first? Remember the Woolpack has a beautiful beer garden over looking the river – perfect at this time of year.
The Swiss Cottage I will be announcing some exciting news from Ange at The Swiss Cottage in next months edition, in the meantime, they have a full line up of music for you. Please check out the guide.
Charters Charters hold their weekly Quiz on a Thursday evening, starting at 8pm with free entry. They have also started to do a monthly spoken word night – which might be a reading, poem, story or drama enactment. The evening is called 'What The Thunder Said' and is hosted by Lewis from Charters at 8pm on Monday 8th May. I've been along to one of them and it was a really interesting, funny and entertaining evening! The Sunday afternoon sessions continue – see the guide for details.

Swim the Channel without leaving your home town Ever wanted to take on a big challenge and raise money for charity but never had the time? Did you aim to get fitter this year but haven’t had the motivation?
T
his year, Heart Research UK is giving you the chance to swim the channel, but don’t worry - it’s in the comfort of your local swimming pool! Swim as an individual or a team and complete 22 miles over 12 weeks, while raising money for a pioneering heart charity. This is the perfect challenge to take on if you don’t have much time; it can be done in the morning before work or in your free time at the weekend, you can’t make yourself any excuses! By signing up for Swim the Channel, you are not only raising money for a fantastic charity, but you will also be encouraged to get fitter and healthier along the way. Having a set challenge and sponsors will help you stick to your fitness goals and as a bonus, all
the money you raise will be spent helping hearts near you. Heart Research UK is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and they have a lot to celebrate. They have funded £24million of medical research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease and your support helps continue this research. In the last 50 years, they’ve helped to reduce the number of UK deaths from cardiovascular disease by more than half – an achievement they are very proud of. It may come as a surprise that heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer and even more of a surprise that a significant number of cases are preventable. In fact, by completing the swim the channel challenge and getting fitter, you will be reducing your risk of heart disease.
Sign up by calling 0113 234 7474 or email community@heartresearch.org.uk and you’ll be sent a fundraising pack including a swim diary to track your lengths, sponsorship forms, tips and posters to promote your challenge.

EGGSTRA careful with Syns at Easter for charity Members of the Stanground Slimming World groups are taking care that all their hard work so far isn’t undone over Easter, by donating their chocolate Easter Eggs for Charity!
C
onsultant Elaine Dove said, "My members have worked really hard to shift those unwanted pounds since Christmas and they are determined to keep on track for the Summer and every year I help them to set strategies to work with during the four day break, where they can still enjoy food optimising whether they are eating out, going away or expecting visits. This year, I have combined two things together as an added bonus! I am a member of the Peterborough Lambretta Vespa Scooter Club - a cluster of great friends who have vintage scooters that like to meet up for a good old chat. Every year, the club and other clubs around the district like to gather together and donate Easter eggs for Sue Ryder and other small children’s homes in the area. With around 200
plus scooters, we ride out to the Sue Ryder Hospice and deliver the Easter eggs so they can raffle them in a Tombola and with the money raised, it will go to the upkeep of the home as well as other things they may need to buy. My members were very EGGCITED and jumped at the chance to raise some great cash and keep them on plan as well. So, both of my groups kindly donated Easter eggs. The members know that they are still able to have Easter eggs and we have talked about the alternatives. Cadburys Creme Eggs are only 9 syns or maybe a small Easter egg would still be able to be enjoyed at only 14.5 syns and will still be on the right track." Elaine said, "Nothing is banned on Slimming World; it's about choosing healthy options for
a healthier lifestyle. Losing weight and staying slimmer forever." We have been talking about barbecues, as we have a new book with some great tips and ideas and hopefully, if the weather is good, a great chance to sit in the garden with a Slimming World Pimms. Also, as the weather gets warmer, the members can enjoy some Body Magic, which is anything that makes the heart beat a little faster and builds up a bit of a sweat like getting out and walking in the sunshine, taking the dog or kids for a walk, etc. We have many charity events each year! One big charity EGGSTRAVAGANZA will be in June for Cancer Research, where members can empty their wardrobes of bigger clothes and treat themselves to a new closet.
If anyone is interested in losing some weight for the summer and would like to know more about our extra easy plan, no weighing, no calorie counting, no hunger, then pop along to Elaine’s groups Thursday’s 5.30pm & 7.30pm and Friday’s 9.30am at Stanground Community Centre, Whittlesey Road to find out more or just call 01733 346699 or 07729 689552 and she would be happy to help you or there is another local group in Cardea, Monday’s 5.30pm & 7.30pm St Michael’s School, Constantine Ave with Kirsty 07581407037

Spring BBQ
with a twist!
food&drink Looking to host a Spring BBQ? Forget the fail-safe burgers and sausages and put a fresh spin on your Easter celebrations with this Middle-Eastern inspired recipe - Taylor, butterflied spiced lamb leg with Persian jewelled rice and grilled squash with yogurt, mint and Aleppo pepper. This delicious lunch is full of exciting flavours - the perfect mix of complementary herbs, vegetables, meat, fruit and spices.
Ingredients Spiced lamb
• 1 leg of lamb (about 1.5kg) • 1 tbsp cumin seeds • 1 tbsp coriander seeds • 1 tbsp sumac • 2 tsp smoked paprika • 3 cloves garlic, crushed • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp sherry vinegar • A small bunch of fresh mint, roughly chopped • Freshly ground black pepper and sea salt flakes
Persian jewelled rice
• 300g basmati rice • 150g dried cranberries • A generous pinch of saffron threads • 2 tbsp olive oil • 75g unsalted butter • 2 large onions, finely chopped • 2 cinnamon sticks, broken in half • 1 tbsp cumin seeds • 1 tsp cardamon pods, bruised • 1/2-1 tsp dried chilli flakes (or to taste) • 100g walnut pieces, toasted • A generous bunch parsley, chopped • 3 garlic cloves, very finely chopped • Seeds picked from 1 large pomegranate • Finely grated zest from 1 orange • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Grilled squash with yogurt, pomegranate molasses, mint and Aleppo pepper • 1 butternut squash, cut in half, then sliced into 1cm rounds • 2-3 tbsp olive oil • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 3 tbsp Greek yogurt • 1 tbsp pomegranate molasses • A small bunch mint, chopped • 1 tsp Aleppo pepper flakes
Method q Begin by butterflying the lamb
leg. Lay it (fleshy side down) on a chopping board and starting at the thick end of the leg, use a really sharp knife to cut through the meat down to the bone. Continue to make small slicing incisions through the meat, following the line of the bone as closely as possible to ease it away. Discard the bone. Where the meat is thickest, make a few deep slashes to open the leg out further and make it more even. Set aside while you make the marinade. w Set a frying pan over a medium heat and add the cumin and coriander, toasting for a minute or so until deliciously fragrant. Tip into a pestle and mortar and roughly grind. Add the sumac and smoked paprika and grind together. Stir through the garlic, olive oil and sherry vinegar, and then rub all over the lamb, working it into all of the meat. Cover and leave to marinate for a couple of hours at room temperature, or ideally overnight in the fridge for maximum flavour. e Once the meat is ready, add the rice to a sieve and rinse well under running water, then tip into a bowl and cover with cold water. Put the cranberries in a separate bowl and cover with boiling water. Add the saffron to a small glass and cover with 2 tablespoons of boiling water. Allow to soak for 1 hour.
What to do at the barbecue q Fire up the barbecue: one end
high for the lamb, the middle burner to medium for the squash and the other end to a low flame for the rice. w Once the rice, saffron and cranberries have soaked for 30 minutes, add the oil and half of the butter to a large deep frying pan and place on the cooking grates over the low flame. When the butter has melted, add the onion, cinnamon, cumin, cardamon and chilli flakes and fry gently for 30 minutes until the onion is soft and lightly caramelised, stirring from time to time. e When the onions are nearly done, start to grill the lamb. Lay the lamb leg over the high heat for 8 minutes on each side to caramelise and then reduce heat to a minimum and cook for a further 15 minutes, until the internal temp is 60-65°C for mediumrare, 65-70°C for medium. Turn off the burner under the lamb and transfer to rest for a good 10-15 minutes on the warming rack. r Drain the rice and cranberries and stir through the caramelised onions. Add the saffron and its infused water. Cover with boiling water to come level with the top of the rice. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, stirring well, then dot the surface of the rice with
the remaining butter. Cover the pan tightly with a lid or layer of foil and leave over a low heat. Cook for about 30 minutes, after which time the rice will be fluffy and a delicious buttery crust will have developed on the bottom. t Once the rice has been covered, cook the squash. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and pepper. Lie on the grates over a medium flame and cook for about 20 minutes, turning regularly until lightly charred and soft when pierced with the tip of a knife. y Make the topping for the rice by stirring the walnuts, parsley, garlic, pomegranate and orange zest in a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Once the rice is ready, stir through half the walnut, pomegranate and parsley mixture, scraping the lovely buttery crust off the bottom of the pan and stirring that through as well. Pile the rice onto a warmed serving dish and scatter over the remaining walnut mixture. u To serve, cut the lamb into thick slices and pile onto a serving plate. Sprinkle over the mint and a little sea salt. Pile the roasted squash onto another plate and add little dollops of yogurt. Drizzle over the pomegranate molasses and sprinkle on the mint and Aleppo pepper. Tuck in!

All those times you have thought your cosmetic products have run out or needed replacing, there were ways to make them last longer. Here are eight helpful hacks for your make-up and beauty products to ensure they last as long as possible... and save you a few pennies along the way.
1. Cut open bottles
3. Fix broken powders
5. Mascara in hot water
7. Wash make-up brushes
Scoop out any product hiding within corners of plastic bottles or tubes of hair and beauty products.
Pour rubbing alcohol on crushed blusher, bronzer or eyeshadow powder and press it back together.
When your mascara is dry or clumpy, soak it in hot water to loosen the product along the side of the tube.
Wash and condition your make-up brushes to make them last longer as oil, dirt and bacteria gets trapped in the bristles.
4. Re-use false lashes
6. Melt your lipstick together
8. Airtight-seal nail polish
Carefully clean glue residue and make-up off the falsies with a spoolie brush and they’re good to go for another use.
Freeze your lipstick after melting the bottom of the broken piece with a lighter and reattaching it to the bullet.
Air can thicken up the nail polish formula, so always cap the bottle tightly and remove the crust around the thread to keep the seal airtight.
2. Add moisturiser to foundation Pour a little face moisturiser into your ‘empty’ foundation, shake it well and voila! You have a tinted moisturiser.

consumercourier Cardea to Park Farm footpath planning conditions agreed before future build by Persimmon. My fellow councillors, Ray Bisby & Brian Rush, had met with planning officers to discuss and decide on our recommendations regarding future phases of the Cardea building programme by Persimmon.
W
e have been pushing to have our conditions accepted as part of the next phase, to ensure a footpath/ cycleway link is completed to link up the pelican crossing on Whittlesey Road, to enable safe access for residents from Park Farm into Cardea and acceptance that an unofficial cut through from Barham Close would not be included in the plans and that it wold be shut off in perpetuity. The great news is that these conditions (along with others) have been accepted. Full submission below along with map.
Re - Planning Application 16/02419/ OUT Land to the South Of Oakdale Avenue, Stanground Peterborough. Stanground South Councillors, Brian Rush, Ray Bisby and myself, would like to propose a number of reasonable conditions are included as part of the application should committee be minded to approve the above application. q Background. Access into the Cardea development from other areas of Stanground South to the North of the development is severely restricted. Residents from Park Farm and other adjacent areas of Stanground therefore, are forced to walk a long way to the Oakdale Primary School area in order to find a safe route into Cardea, which thereby understandably means many prefer to use a vehicle or bus to drive around the bypass, in order to safely access the shopping precinct, sports pavilion and primary school. This is clearly not sustainable. Peterborough City Council promotes the use of sustainable transport methods and local residents would like to support this aspiration, but in order to do so, a safe route constructed to allow access on foot, by cycle or bus using
the bus lane must be provided. The plans show the proposed routes for the bus lane and footpath/cycleway network. However, the need for the safe route is already overdue and we request this is constructed without any further delay by way of condition as part of this application. As per the attached map, we ask that a condition requires the footpath/cycle-way and bus lane is to be completed before any property construction begins on Phases 6 and or 8 of the application, indeed, if possible, we would strongly request that no more development is permitted without first constructing this vital safe and sustainable route for buses, cyclists and pedestrians. The footpath/cycle-way must link the existing pelican crossing on Whittlesey Road, to the Cardea Shopping Precinct in its entirety, complete with the necessary safety barriers as specified by Highways. This route is shown with a blue and green line on the attached map. w Barham Close is shown with a link through from Cardea to other areas of Stanground South however, we are strongly against the use of this route due to the substantial concerns and objections we have received from residents who, quite understandably, wish it to remain a quiet cul-de-sac, free from ASB and litter. For this reason, we strongly suggest that this access route is removed from the plans and is blocked off for perpetuity. Please see circled area on the attached map. e The boundary between the North of the development and the rear gardens of properties in Oakdale Avenue and Barham Close needs to be agreed by negotiation with the residents, in order to prevent what could turn out to be something akin to a 1M wide strip of 'no man's land'. A potential flytipping nightmare and an area of future ownership disputes in the long term. r In addition, the map shows a green shaded area near to the social housing, adjacent to the allotment site backing onto the properties on Oakdale Avenue. Please can you confirm who will be responsible for this area and once identified, ensure it is included as a condition.
If your home is your castle – then you’ll want to protect it and its contents Safe Local Trades will be joining a range of crime prevention and other organisations at an important event this month – aimed at home owners from all over the Peterborough area. POLICE are hosting a home security event at Hampton Police Station, 401 Eagle Way, Hampton Vale in Peterborough on Wednesday, May 24. This event - which runs from 2-7pm - will focus on all aspects of home security, with lots of advice and information on offer, as well as some great product displays and practical demonstrations. Representatives from The Bobby Scheme, Safe Local Trades and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service will be on hand to offer advice. Peterborough Neighbourhood Watch will also be available to help any residents interested in starting a scheme in their area. All residents of Peterborough are welcome to come along on the day. Limited parking is available in the rear car park or visitors may choose to park at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre. Hampton Police Station is less than a five minute walk from the shopping centre and accessible via the rear doors at the shopping centre food court. The volunteer Police Cadets will be around to guide those attending. Police crime reduction officer Helen O’Driscoll said, “Much of our work is aimed at making people feel safe in the community and helping
them avoid crime. We will be on hand to offer advice on how to secure your home and your belongings and to discuss topics such as rogue traders, doorstep crime, scams and any other issues that are affecting you. “This is a great opportunity for anyone to come along and discuss their concerns, as well as view new products and find out what is best for them. “The event is being held between 2pm and 7pm and I urge people to drop in whenever is convenient for them.” We look forward to seeing you there.
