Stanground Church Cardea Update... Stanground has been growing for the past 70 years and it still is! Every week people are moving into new homes in Cardea.
In the 1960s and 70s, when the Southfields and Oakdale estates went up, the local church decided to put up a new building in the middle of the Oakdale area and St Michael’s Church was born. Today, St Michael’s is a wonderful thriving community of all ages, very relaxed and welcoming with a very real, warm spirituality. However, many people don’t realize that this building is a church! On the Wright Avenue side there is an illuminated cross, but the trees that were planted when the church was built have grown up and it is now hidden behind the branches. We are thinking hard about what kind of new sign to put up and how to publicise what a great place it is. On Thursday 22nd May the church will be open as a polling station for the local elections. If you come in to vote, do have a look around and enjoy your lovely little church.
Church Service at St Michael’s School On June 1st at 11.15am the whole congregation from St Michael’s is going over to Cardea to hold our Sunday service in St Michael’s Church School. Afterwards there’s coffee and eats, and a chance to look round the school. All Stangrounders are welcome, and especially anyone who lives on Cardea. Well the signs that spring has sprung are all around us here at Cardea. There are daffodils nodding their jolly heads and birds singing above the evergrowing number of homes. The sight of families enjoying a cold drink outside The Applecart means that summer is almost upon us. Talking of summer, there are some family friendly events planned, including a BBQ and activity days for the children. Please watch this space where details will be announced and also, check the community notice board in Morrisons and see our poster in Fishtastic when you next visit for the best chips in town! The first Saturday Coffee Morning was held on 22nd March which went very well. It was a great opportunity to meet new residents. The next event will be Saturday 17th May and/or 21st June at St Michael’s School. There will be free refreshments, and toys and crafts for the children, plus the chance to hear the latest Cardea news and chat with your neighbours.
There is also an open invitation to all to attend the Cardea Residents’ Association meetings, which are held at Morrisons’ training rooms at 7pm on Wednesday evenings. The next two dates are 9th April & 14th May. It would be great to welcome some new members on board, bringing fresh ideas. Everyone is welcome! Neighbourhood Watch has its next meeting on Monday 19th May 7pm at St Michael’s school and again, everyone who lives at Cardea is welcome. Cardea playing fields are really starting to look the part and have had initial inspections. Again, watch this space for progress reports.
If anyone has any thoughts on t family activities and events tha , dea Car in see to they’d like ent questions about the developm or nity mu of this growing com ase simply want to say ‘hello’, ple ee coff the of one to g alon come us t pos or mornings or meetings, e, pag ok ebo Fac a query on the My Cardea.

Saturday Sports Clubs Key Sports launch their popular Saturday Sports Clubs, for children aged 3-7, at Stanground Academy Sports Centre starting from 26th April. The Sports Clubs, already running successfully at Nene Park Academy, provide a wide range of sporting activities and is a great opportunity for children to learn and play sports, led by fully qualified sports coaches, in a safe and fun environment. The Sports Clubs help children to develop co-ordination, concentration and confidence levels. This not only promotes their all round development, but also gives them an introduction and head start into sport by learning to play a dierent sport each week. Parents also get the chance to share the sports experience by seeing their children active and improving their skills. Key Sports is a recognised, local Sports Coaching Company, delivering sport to hundreds of children through nurseries, pre-schools and primary schools in the Peterborough area.

Proud Pumas on the Prowl by Ciaran McAuley, Chairman, Park Farm Pumas
Park Farm Pumas are now drawing close to the end of another successful season. Success, not measured by trophies in the cabinet but more on the satisfaction and enjoyment that all of our young footballers and their families get from being a part of our great little club. Our U6 squad (school year 1) of 5 or so players are in preparations for starting the Peterborough Junior Alliance League (PJAL) in September. We are currently recruiting and urgently need up to 5 more players to fill our squad for the coming season. We are also looking for coaches and sponsors for this great group to purchase a new kit for the season. Our U7 squads (x2 teams at school year 2) have had a great season, picking up some great wins & performances along the way but more importantly making new friends from across the city and having loads of fun. We potentially only have a couple of places available in each team and again would be happy to hear from coaches or sponsors interested in getting involved. Our superb young U8 squad (school year 3) have had another enjoyable season and are now transitioning to play 7v7 football next season. If we get more players in there is a chance that we could host two teams with his group. So if you are interested please get in touch ASAP. In the U9 section (School Year 4) we have seen some immense performances with Our U9 Red squad making it to the plate tournament final earlier in the season and our U9 Black squad in the semi-finals of the Hereward cup – fingers crossed for a great performance in that one – GOOD LUCK PUMAS!
Our U10s (school Year 5) have had a mixed bag this season with our U10 Blacks performing well against established clubs and finishing in a very respectable mid table position against strong opposition. Our U10 reds have struggled to have a consistent turnout all season and as such suffered in both results and performances but really enjoyed it nonetheless. These guys all transition to 9v9 football next season and we urgently need players at this age group if we hope to continue with two teams – so please pass the word and get in touch.
If you fancy getting involved in our great little club pop down to the Pumas Lair at Fletton Avenue at weekends, check out our website – GOOGLE – Park Farm Pumas, or call our Chairman Ciaran McAuley on 07713106898 for more information
Again our U11s (School Year 6) have had a mixed bag. Despite numerous team personnel changes and coaching let downs our U11 red squad & coach have battled adversity and ended up showing immense character to still be playing week in week out and enjoying their football. Our U11 Black squad has grown in popularity and have picked up some superb victories throughout the year finishing in a Respectable mid table position. But we are looking to add to this great crop of players so please get in touch. The future has some exiting Spring / Summer tournaments for Pumas, a party atmosphere for our end of season presentation and the prospect of new and greater experiences going into next season.

Blackberries Gets Physical…. Blackberry House Day Nurseries setting in Stanground has been developing how they support their physical development. As part of their under twos units, they have developed physical development on different levels. This includes soft play apparatus that encourages a wealth of different movements. As children grow and flourish in the Blackberries nursery environment, they are open to a world of challenge and knowledge to support this development further. In the Pre-School and Toddler unit, sports sessions take place twice a week. These sports activities are packed with fun and link perfectly with preparing the children for PE at school. Blackberries’ Future Stars group of music, dance and drama, enables children to explore new ways of moving and express themselves freely. But it doesn’t stop there; the children also take part in ‘Sticky Kids’ as part of their daily routine. This is a group activity of fun exercise which is accompanied by a variety of music and songs that the children know and love. This is mixed with some yoga time to add a slower, tranquil rhythm to the day. Blackberries physical development is support by a fantastic menu, prepared by the nursery chef, giving everyone the energy and nutrition they need. Little Owls Day Nursery is set in Stanground, Peterborough, in what used to be known as Thistle Drive Playcentre. It is now known as Thistle Drive Centre.
Little Owls Day Nursery
Little Owls Day Nursery caters for 25 children aged three months to five years. Both Managing Directors, (Katrina and Abbi), have over sixteen years’ experience in the childcare sectors, working with children aged 0-16 years, in a variety of settings. They both have relevant childcare qualifications and are parents. “We set up Little Owls Day Nursery as we know how hard it can be to find childcare that is of a high standard within a stimulating, friendly and educational environment.” All staff are appropriately trained or are training, and there are also volunteers who join them to help out with sessions, on a daily basis. Parents will be introduced to all staff and volunteers. Opening hours are from 8.00am to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday, 51 weeks of the year. Little Owls is closed Bank Holidays and for one week between Christmas and New Year. There are two amazing rooms; Wise Owls is for two to five year olds and Baby Owls is for three months to two years old. The nursery will be cooking healthy, nutritious meals on site for the children at lunchtimes and shall also be providing breakfast and a tea time snack, as well as a snack for morning and afternoon break. Menus and snack menus will be added to the website in the near future. Stanground Academy
Charity Fashion Show On Friday 7th March, the Stanground Academy hosted its first fashion show. The show was organised by the staff and students of the business department, under the leadership of Jilly-Marie Kelly and students; Kirsty Hall, Lauren Wilson, Vicky Cox and Katie Magnus. Showcasing both the work of Alison Spataro’s Hair and Beauty students and the fruits of the Academy’s Performing Arts scene, it was a joyful celebration of talent and self-expression. As final preparations were being made backstage, the steadily growing crowd was welcomed with a set from a perfectly synched three-piece band. A pared-back cover of Valerie, conjuring images of a bee-hived, redlipped Amy Winehouse, gave a taste of the sixties vibe that the Academy’s hairstylists and make-up artists would soon be serving up. But before their models took to the catwalk, there was to be another brilliant performance – this time from the five-strong Harmony Majorettes. It was clear, long before their backing track changed to that Bastille hit, that their energetic baton-twirling display would set the rhythm of the night.
offering and two solo dances punctuated the catwalk spectacle. Its first cohort of models – decked out in pieces from The Party Shop and made up by Hair and Beauty students – provided a 20th century retrospective, evoking Hairspray’s 1960s Baltimore or the rebellious cool of Cyndi Lauper. Next came a parade of young men and women in eveningwear: the former sporting the neat, lustrous crops of Disney princes; the latter hair jewellery and side-swept curls. Closing the show was an eclectic but fascinating series of looks, bringing onto our collective fashion radar everything from traditional saris to Gaga-esque towering headdresses.
Three more breathtaking pieces by the Academy’s performing arts students – an African dance group’s

community spirit to be seen that night at the Stanground Academy. A number of students volunteered to model their friends’ work; many more turned out to support them. A dozen or more teachers took to the catwalk and their willingness to get involved with their students’ projects (poking fun at themselves along the way) was recognised with thunderous applause. Even the Principal, Ged Rae, did a turn modelling. Head-to-toe in Scottish national dress, he brought students to their feet, cheering and laughing, with a traditional jig. And the appreciation was clearly mutual. Mr Rae said that it was events like these that made him proud to be the Principal at the Stanground Academy. Students were told that they were ‘a credit to the team that work with them and to themselves’. The congratulations of Hair and Beauty teacher, Mrs Spataro, as she was called on stage to receive her own thanks, left the four show directors visibly beaming. Even without the public recognition, these students had a lot to be smiling about, having seen their hard work realised in a wonderful meeting of movement, sound, and colour. Yet, here was more than a foray into spectacle. The well-attended event, which had been in the pipeline since November last year, was in fact conceived as a fundraiser for Motor Neurone Disease charity, the Broad Appeal. Helping to raise money and awareness for such a worthwhile cause has delighted students and the public alike, so it could be that the Academy’s fashion show becomes an annual event.

Meri & Rob are both CAMRA members and will ensure The Heron is fully stocked with up to 4 real ales. Meri comes from a pub and club background and is very keen to renovate The Heron, bringing this family friendly pub strongly back into community use. Children will be welcome until 7pm and they are installing wheel chair / buggy access into the garden area.
With the weather warming up, it’s time to get out there and enjoy a drink or two or maybe a delicious meal in your local pub’s beer garden – you can bring along the kids and dog too - to while away a few hours on a sunny day!
For those who don’t know the pub, it has a spacious bar area with Sky Sports, a pool table, darts board and jukebox. There is a vast car park and impressive function room, complete with a stage, dance floor and it’s own bar, catering for christenings, weddings, school functions, etc. The Heron intend to carry out bingo, tea & coffee mornings etc., in addition to more lively dos such as hen nights! Taxation Question: I understand George Osborne promised in the budget that Class 2 National Insurance would be paid through Self-Assessment rather than separately – is this correct? Answer: Yes this is correct, but what he didn’t say was that this won’t be introduced until April 2016, so you will have to continue paying as usual for another two more years. Class 2 National Insurance Contributions (NICs) are paid by self-employed tax payers who pay this as a flat weekly rate (currently £2.75) unless they qualify for the small earnings exemption or other exemptions which remove the necessity to pay NICs. You should also note that starting from the tax year 2014-2015, that HMRC can collect outstanding Class 2 NICs by adjusting a taxpayer’s tax code or by passing the debt onto a specialist private debt collection company.
News No Income Tax On Director And Employee Loans Up To £10,000 - The limit has increased to £10,000 from 6 April 2014 (previously £5,000) for cheap or interest free loans to directors and employees. This means that such loans will not need to be reported on form P11D and there will be no income tax or national insurance liability on loans up to the new limit. However, there may be a 25% corporation tax charge payable by the company if the loan is to a shareholder and is still outstanding nine months after the end of the accounting period. Employers should note that HMRC is changing the way they charge interest on unpaid PAYE from 6 April 2014, so you should ensure PAYE is always paid by the due dates. Our monthly newsletters always show these as “dates to remember”.

Following an audacious debut in 2013, the Yaxley Festival returns this May with an extra day, more live music and even more community involvement. With the generous support of Yaxley Parish Council and the local business community, the event takes place in the heart of the village at the Middletons Road Recreation Ground from the 16th to 18th of May. Once again live music and entertainment collides with community, living history, sport and village tradition in an event that promises to deliver a fantastic weekend of family fun. This year the Festival Committee is working in partnership with Stanground Academy, who are creating their own zone to showcase the school and its students. New for this year is a second stage, which the Academy will share with our local schools to provide even more opportunities for the youth of the village to perform and have fun.

‘Pet’ senior citizens Is your dog or cat around 7-8 years of age? Did you know this is when they are becoming senior citizens? They can also start to develop illnesses associated with old age such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, arthritis and cancer. These signs develop slowly and are usually only diagnosed when the problem has become advanced.
by Whittlesey Vets Finding these problems early means we can help your pet live a longer happier life with a better quality. You know your pets better than anyone and can inform us of any changes that you notice before they become a problem.
Some of the problems you may notice are: • Stiffness or slowing down, difficulty exercising and climbing stairs • Drinking and urinating more often • Toileting in the house • Becoming confused disorientated or other behavioural changes • Noticing changes on the skin, lumps and bumps • Bad breath, red gums • Change in eating patterns, gaining or loosing weight • Not interacting with the family as much as before • Changes in activity levels, less active, increased sleeping hours

Stanground Gazette
Note any behavioural changes and whether they are becoming more obvious. Help keep your pets active during the ‘Golden years’. Regular check ups with your vet, the same as we have regular checks with the doctor. Your pets should be checked yearly at their vaccinations and kept up to date with flea and worming treatments. Make sure your older pets have soft surfaces or beds to lie on. Old bones and joints really appreciate somewhere soft. Make sure your pet is receiving the correct nutrition with age appropriate diets. Note any behavioural changes and whether they are becoming more obvious, like drinking more or if they become unusually grumpy, these can be subtle signs of underling problems. Make it easier for your pets to get around, having ramps into the car or onto the sofa for dogs, soft carpets on otherwise slippery floors so they can get their grip, and for cats several platforms they can access to get to the places they like to sit like window sills.
If you are at all worried, remember, we vets and vet nurses are there to help you.

A visit to
Moor Farm by Olivia, aged 10.
“
Moor Farm Meats are based in Newborough, and every other Saturday, I go with my family to buy our meat. It is great at Moor Farm because they sell homegrown, free range beef and lamb and make all of their own sausages using English gilt pork. When we visit on a Saturday morning, we can taste some of the award winning sausages in a very appetising sausage sandwich, free! If you are unable to get to Newborough, Moor Farm sells meat in Cathedral Square on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.
In the spring, you can go along and feed the baby lambs with a very friendly lady, called Judith, who owns the farm. You have to wear a funny outfit to protect you from germs, but you can pick them up and give them a bottle of milk, which is really good fun! I also held some tiny baby chickens and baby rabbits, which are really cute.
...enjoy the friendly atmosphere, along with visiting some of the farm animals. animals.”
Olivia
So, you should definitely visit Moor Farm for your own, great, freshly produced meat and other products such as vegetables, jams etc and enjoy the friendly atmosphere, along with visiting some of the farm animals.

Maintenance on divorce - for children and spouses? Separation or divorce is extremely stressful especially when considering ongoing financial arrangements. All financial aspects need to be considered including housing, pensions and income. In some cases, in addition to child support payments, maintenance for a spouse is also appropriate. As a married couple each party has an ongoing obligation to financially support the other, even after separation or upon divorce. Spousal maintenance is generally calculated on a “needs vs. affordability” basis. If one spouse has an income which is much lower than their reasonable monthly outgoings they can be said to have a “need” for additional financial support. Consideration then has to be given to whether or not the other party can reasonably “afford” to pay spousal maintenance, sometimes in addition to child support. Many other factors also need to be considered such as which benefits or tax credits should be claimed now that each party are “single” as opposed to being a “couple”. This is an extremely complex area but one that is essential to consider when ensuring that each party has financial security now and the future. Abby Smith of Setfords Solicitors always approaches such matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting couples to reach a swift, amicable, cost effective agreement which best meets their specific needs. For any Family Law queries or information about Family Mediation please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you, with very competitive charging rates.

Make sure fire safety still stays at the forefront of your mind in May – and don’t forget to test your smoke alarm and the smoke alarms of the vulnerable and elderly in your neighbourhood. Brighten your patio with our colourful hanging baskets and patio containers. Primulas and Bellis available together with shrubs and conifers can be planted now.
A combination of wet and warm weather accelerates the growth of plants, trees, grass and unfortunately weeds! Ensure that you keep on top of weeding. I like to cover most of my beds with a weed suppressant membrane and cover that with either decorative aggregates or wood chippings. It is a good idea just to spread a thick layer of wood or bark mulch on to any boarders that have bulbs, herbaceous perennials or any plant that would not propagate through a weed preventative membrane. It can be topped up through the summer, retains ground moisture and then dug in over the winter months. Don’t let that precious rain go to waste. Secure guttering to greenhouses, sheds and summerhouses, and direct the water to a water butt. You can also harvest the rain from the downpipes of your home with special adaption kits. Keep an eye on pots and containers, even with the rain they can tend to drain quickly and dry out. Regular lawn mowing is important so try and cut the lawn on a weekly basis. If left too long the task can be harder and take longer. Lawns get used to the frequency that they are cut and this can be the difference of a good lawn and a great lawn.

Nesting birds don’t necessarily prevent tree work. Minor tree surgery may still be carried out if required as long as the nest is not disturbed and a good distance is kept. Contact a qualified tree surgeon if in doubt. Your vegetable seedlings should be coming on nicely. For any that are too late to sow, pop down to your local garden centre and pick up some teenage plantlets to pot up. There are still many vegetable crops that can be sown this month, carrots, broad beans, lettuces and salad leaves, leeks, spinach are great healthy one to sow. Make sure you sow salads and herbs in small batches every other week. This will allow you to harvest them throughout the fortnight and have fresh produce all season!
Seed potatoes available.
