Celebrating the growth of local business... Bird & Co Certified Accountants of Yaxley move into new, larger premises Local and well known accountant Pete Bird F.C.P.A. who started Bird & Co many years ago has now moved into new office premises in Holme Road Yaxley from September 2014. You may have read his monthly articles in this magazine. This move has been necessary due to the number of new clients and expansion of existing clients who have grown with him. Pete has now been joined by another local accountant from Fletton, Mark Laws F.C.C.A. who practices under the name of Prospect Accountancy. Their combined qualifications and experience enables them to deal in a prompt and timely manner with all accountancy and taxation requirements whether it be start-ups, sole traders, partnerships or limited companies in the most tax efficient way of trading. We of course continue to offer all services you would expect from a firm of accountants, such as VAT returns, Book-keeping, Company Secretarial, Payroll, Self-Assessment and Tax Planning. The new offices are in Holme Road on the right hand side. Pete and Mark also both share the same outlook of a personal relationship with their clients. As Pete previously worked from his home which is just around the corner from the offices, any clients that wish to drop any correspondence, records or meet outside of normal office hours, can still do so at his home at 17 West End, Yaxley. We therefore look forward to welcoming old and new clients to these new offices even if it’s just a chat over a cuppa!

Cardea Update The summer holidays are over the children have returned to school and we can all fall back into our regular routines for a while before we begin our Autumn and Winter festivities. It’s been a lovely summer over here in Cardea with our first Community Fun Day at the beginning of August which was a great success, despite the weather not being the driest or sunniest! It was opened by Marco Cereste who has kindly supported the CRA from our very beginning and all the families that attended had a great time. Many thanks to everyone who helped out with their time and supplies, especially Fishtastic for providing a nonstop BBQ, Morrison’s and St Michaels School for letting us use the premises to hold our event. We , the CRA, are always working hard and planning all year round with the intention of building a strong community spirit and providing a social network for all our residents , we really hope that next summer we’ll be in a position to put on a bigger , brighter family fun day along with Christmas and other occasional events. In order to do this we need YOUR help, we need more folk to get on board with us, bringing ideas, opinions and skills to the table of Cardea! We have the opportunity now to build on the foundations that have been laid and take advantage of all the assistance that’s out there for community groups like us. You don’t have to commit to attending every meeting, just pop along when you can and join our Face Book MyCardea page where you can keep up to date with local happenings and share news and post your views. The more members we have the bigger our voice, so please spread the word and get involved. You can find dates of CRA meetings on the notice board in Morrison’s so even if you don’t surf the web you can still find out when to come along, meetings are held in St Michaels School. If evenings are not suitable for you there’s a weekly term time coffee morning on Thursdays from 9 – 11, and occasional Saturday mornings, everyone’s welcome. We especially welcome those new to the area or indeed the country and we always have plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits too! Hope to see you real soon, Kate from Kate Ferris on behalf of The Cardea Residents Association

YOUR people, YOUR community, YOUR church
Stanground Church
I also received this lovely letter below... We were interested to read in the Stanground Gazette of your Lights Out vigil on 4th August for those whose names appear on the church War Memorial. Whilst you were holding your vigil, we were in France at the last resting place of Cor poral Ernest Medlock, one of the 32 fallen, paying our respects and giving thanks from Stanground. Having seen his name some yea rs ago on the Memorial, we were determined to find out where he was buried. Ernest was the great uncle of my husband and is not mentioned on any memoria l in France as he died in a Field Clearing Hospita l in Abbeville, in the Somme region of Picardy. Ern est was in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and was wounded in action on 3rd September 1916 and died, follo wing amputation of an arm, on 12th September 1916. He is buried in Abbeville Community Cemeter y Extension. Unfortunately, we have no pho tographs of Ernest but are pleased we were able to loca te him and thank him for his sacrifice. With kind regards, Sue and Richard Garner
HARVEST SUNDAY: 12TH OCTOBER In October we celebrate harvest. This is all about being thankful for absolutely everything we have. If we think what we have at a basic level, an income whether from work or retirement or even benefits, a place to live, warmth, clothes, food. On a world level, we are the extremely lucky ones. Its so easy to forget this and so easy to always think of what we haven’t got rather than being grateful for what we have. So once a year in church we make a point of thanking God for all this. There will be a harvest celebration for Cardea at St Michael’s Church School, at 11.15am on Sunday 12th October and this is a service suitable for all ages including children. People like to bring gifts at harvest and this year the gifts will be going to local charities for homeless people and those in need in Peterborough. Our other harvest service for the whole parish will be at 6.30pm on Sunday 12th October. After the service there is a ‘bring and share’ buffet supper in church and everyone is invited to come and join in. St John’s will also be OPEN whilst we are decorating the church on Saturday 11th October from 10.30 - 12.30. There will be free teas and coffees and food served in and outside in the lane.
I look forward to seeing you as we thank God for all his good gifts! The Revd Anne Shorter, Vicar of Stanground

Treble 20 Club
Stanground Fire & Rescue Service
Treble 20 Club based in the Church Hall Mayce Road is looking for new members.
Winter is coming and after seeing a rise in chimney fires last year, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging all residents to get their chimney professionally swept before the cold sets in.
The group meet on Tuesdays afternoons from 2pm and enjoy great times playing various games including Bingo and Dominos.
Above all, ensure you have a working smoke alarm fitted on each floor or your home. To find out if you are eligible for a free home fire safety check, call 0800 917 99 94.
Top tips to enjoy an open fire safely: • Sweep your chimney at least once a year and get brickwork inspected, especially the chimney breast and roof space. The club has been going since the 1940’s and is a big part of the Stanground community. If you are new to the area or if you are just looking to meet some new friends then please come and join us. We look forward to seeing some new faces soon.
• Do not bank fires too high or overload the grate, and remember to let them burn down well and check the hearth before going to bed. • Use a fire or spark guard to prevent accidental fires. • Do not place objects on or over the mantle-piece which may cause you to stand too close to the fire to reach or use them. • Burn only suitable fuels and avoid burning resinous woods as soot builds up quickly.

Vital surgery exten The Stanground Surgery Patients’ Participation Group (PPG) is fearful that a long awaited and vital new extension to the existing Surgery premises is not now going to happen. The plans have been stalled because of a last minute change of heart by the Co-op Funerals Estates Team who had given an ‘agreement in principle’, nine months ago to allow access over a lay-by on the current access road. They’re now refusing to sign a legal document allowing this to happen. This is key to widening the current access road to ensure that two cars can safely pass, which is a requirement of the planning permission. The doctors and the PPG have been trying for three years to obtain all the necessary land, planning permissions and finance to build an extension, providing six additional clinical rooms, doubling the size of the patient waiting area and providing a new, separate staff car park area, leaving all the spaces in the current car park for the patients. The practice patient population is increasing rapidly, particularly with the new Cardea development, and the current building, without an extension, is no longer fit for purpose. The PPG has embarked upon a campaign to raise awareness of this problem, enlisting the help of our MP, Peterborough City Council, local press and community groups to push this to a successful conclusion. A petition is also available to sign in the surgery. We are grateful for your support.
Family Law worries Court is NOT the only option
When a couple separate difficult decisions have to be made including arrangements for the children of the family and how to divide the finances to ensure everyone’s housing and income needs are met now and in the future. In an ideal world couples would sit down together and work out an agreement, but sadly that is not always possible. There are several options available to couples which do not include court proceedings. These include: • Solicitor Negotiation - where each party instructs a solicitor to enter into negotiations on their behalf in the hope of reaching a mutual agreement;
Opening Hours Tuesday-Friday 9am-5pm Saturday 9am-5pm 10 Saville Road, Westwood, Peterborough PE3 7PR
01733 264391 sales@tlsw.co.uk www.thelampshadewarehouse.co.uk The largest independent lighting showroom in Cambridgeshire
• Mediation - where an independent mediator holds a number of meetings with the couple jointly in the hope of assisting them to agree arrangements directly; • Collaborative – where each party instructs a solicitor separately and the four of them meet to discuss matters directly in the hope of reaching an agreement; • Court proceedings – a last resort if no other option allows the parties to reach agreement on all issues Abby Smith of Woolley & Co Solicitors always approaches such matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting clients to reach a swift, amicable agreement but which best protects their needs now and in the future. Abby Smith has many years’ experience in dealing with such issues and is an accredited specialist in this field. For any Family Law queries please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you.

Great Fen Archaeology Group An exciting new Archaeology Group has been launched at Great Fen. The group hopes to bring together both experienced and budding archaeologists who are interested in the great opportunities to explore beneath the surface on the Great Fen area. Working with Jigsaw Cambridgeshire the group will discover and learn the skills needed for field walking, artefact identification, excavation and other archaeological survey techniques. Already the group have nominated a Chairperson and have decided to focus on the area that was once Whittlesey Mere (now part of the Great Fen project area). The Mere used to be the largest lowland lake south of the Lake District before it was drained in 1851. When the Mere was drained many items of historical interest were found including the skeleton of a grampus (whale) and the skull from a wild boar. Of particular interest were a medieval censer and incense boat believed to be from Ramsey Abbey which is now housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Many medieval fishing weights have been more recently found and the group hopes

Some of the first activities for the group are to explore the eastern side of the Whittlesey Mere area, in preparation for field walking one of the fields in which previous discoveries have been located. Field walking in this area has been planned for late autumn 2014. The information gathered from their activities will be vital to help discover more about the Mere and to help continue to preserve the heritage of this area.

Pet Care
Preventing poisoning of pets Vets are often contacted by owners who are concerned that their pets have ingested something they shouldn’t have, that is potentially harmful or even poisonous. So here are some tips on how to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning and what to do if you suspect your pet has ingested a potential poison. Reducing the risks of accidental poisoning: • Keep human and animal medicines separate and out of reach to avoid accidentally giving the wrong medicine. For example, even small doses of Paracetamol can kill if given to a pet • Keep chemicals out of reach, including cleaning products, DIY products, fuel, oil, lubricants, anti-freeze etc… • Never give animal’s medicines intended for humans. Only give medicines prescribed by your vet, in the dosages prescribed by your vet
ns, avocados, Chocolate, onio uorice and grapes, raisins, liq name just a certain nuts, to d potentially few, are toxic an fatal to animals!
• Be selective with plants and flowers. For example, some types of lilies are poisonous to cats • Alert neighbours that you have pets and ask them to notify you if they are using products that could be harmful to them such as lawn feed, anti-freeze etc… • Foods such as chocolate, onions, avocados, grapes, raisins, liquorice and certain nuts, to name just a few, are toxic and potentially fatal to animals. You are always best to avoid feeding human food to pets and sticking with food that is formulated for their specific species.
Suspect your pet has ingested a poisonous substance?: • Call your vets immediately! • The more accurate you can be with what, when and how much has been ingested the better. Have any packaging with you when you call so you can quickly provide information on products active ingredients. • The vet will then be able to confirm if the food/ chemical/medicine is harmful and advise you if your pet requires immediate attention from a vet.

You can’t help but notice the resurgence that cider has had over the past few years. It is now said to be one of the most popular drinks in the World, with alcohol content ranging from 1.2%-8.5% in most traditional English ciders and Continental ones ranging from 3.5% to a staggering(!) 12%. It now comes in a variety of different flavours – some hideous in my opinion! – but catering to all tastes.
A few little known facts about
cider
• In the 14th Century, children were baptised in it • Farm workers’ pay regularly used to include a daily allowance of cider • Captain Cook carried it on his ships to cure scurvy • It was felt to be a cure for gout during the 19th Century
As we’re around Harvest Festival time, I got thinking about apples and cider! roz@stangroundgazette.co.uk
• About 36 pieces of fruit are needed to make up a gallon • 45% of UK grown apples go into making cider. We have a Stanground Gazette Facebook page now, where we can keep you updated. Find us on Facebook and join in!

Taxation
Question: I’ve heard I won’t need to tax my car any more as DVLA are abolishing car tax discs? Answer: I’m afraid not. The traditional tax disc will no longer need to be displayed from 1 October 2014, after 93 years on our windscreens, but drivers will still have to pay vehicle excise duty, which we commonly refer to as car tax”. Other changes are that if you sell your vehicle you will get a refund for full calendar months left and you will now also be able to pay for “car tax” monthly.
Bird & Co News The vast majority of VAT registered businesses must submit VAT returns online and make any payments due electronically. In the past it has only been possible to avoid the obligation to file online if the taxpayer was a practicing member of a religious society or order whose beliefs are incompatible with the use of electronic equipment, or if the business was in insolvency proceedings. However, following a recent Tribunal decision, HMRC agreed to relax the rules to allow businesses to file by telephone if they can satisfy HMRC that it is not practical to file returns electronically due to their age, disability, computer illiteracy, remoteness of location, or any other reason. If telephone filing is similarly impracticable, affected VAT traders will be able to submit paper returns. Changes to the legislation to formalise the option for telephone filing came into effect on 1 July 2014. The Judge in the tax case that prompted the change found that the failure of HMRC to provide additional filing options was a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
Dates to remember 1 October 2014 - Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 31 December 2013. 19 October 2014 - PAYE and NIC deductions due for month ended 5 October 2014. (If you pay your tax electronically the due date is 22 October 2014.) 19 October 2014 - Filing deadline for the CIS300 monthly return for the month ended 5 October 2014. 19 October 2014 – Due date for CIS tax deducted for the month ended 5 October 2014. 31 October 2014 – Due date for filing the paper self-assessment tax returns that applies to individuals, partnerships and trustees. (Electronic returns can still be filed by 31 January 2015).

Autumn Term... St Michael’s Pre-School, Mace Road It’s been a busy few weeks, welcoming and settling in our new children and their families as well as a new team member. We’re looking forward to the rest of the autumn term, with lots of activities planned as well as continuing to develop our Head Start programme and Home Learning resources. If you are looking for an excellent childcare setting, then please get in touch for further information. Call 01733 686158 or email stmichaelspreschoolstanground@yahoo.co.uk.
Stanground St John’s Primary School Our children returned to school at the beginning of September all looking very happy and smart with their new school uniforms, ready for the start of the academic year. Having changed our school logo, every child was given a free book bag on the first day of term. The new Reception Class intake children have all been very excited to start ‘big school’ with no tears. Assemblies during the first week of term focused on our ‘Golden Rules’ and information about topics which will be covered during the course of the year. The Autumn term’s topic is World War I, although our Reception Class will do something slightly different called ‘Being Me’. We start the term with a ‘Meet the Teacher’ open evening for parents, where we will share expectations and school routines as well as unveil SUMO, which is a programme to encourage children to raise their self-esteem and aspirations. Later in the term, Year 5 and 6 are off for an adventure and team building residential at West Runton which will be followed by the “B Word” whole school production by a performance group during AntiBullying Week. I was thinking...
I’m not really as miserable as the last couple of months have made me seem. It’s just that I seem to do a very good impression of a grumpy old man, despite the fact I’m still in my early twenties. So here goes then, cheerful. Right. One of the things that has always struck me about Stanground is the great sense of community that its people has. The vast majority of people I meet walking around always seem to be happy and friendly, sometimes, on one of the rare occasions I take a walk down to the shops before about
I decided this month I’d at least try and sound vaguely cheerful, try, being the operative word in that sentence. 9:30am to try and find something nice for breakfast, I’ve even had people smile at me and wish me a good morning. A completely alien concept to me. I dread to think what would happen if I tried that in the city centre, most likely all attempts at friendliness would be met with looks of confusion and sheer horror. But it’s not just in the streets where the sense of community really shines. I honestly don’t know what I’d be doing today if I didn’t regularly visit one of Stanground’s fine drinking establishments. I certainly wouldn’t be writing this column that you’ve found nestled in amongst the adverts in this magazine. I’d also be unemployed, I’ve actually been lucky enough to have found two jobs thanks to the wonderful people in my local, and you never know, these nice words about them might even inspire the happy community enough that I find a couple of drinks waiting for me on the bar on my next visit. Though I suspect that’s really testing the community spirit! All these realisations made me think out
in more broad terms, where else can I find a strong sense of togetherness? I was pondering this on the way to work one morning, when I passed another person riding a motorbike and he gave me the biker nod, which I, out of habit, instantly returned. Just the simple act of purchasing a motorbike and driving on the roads gets you instant access into a club, where one of the mandatory rules is that you greet a fellow biker with a friendly nod as you pass each other, a good idea in principle. But when I took a trip to the MotoGP at Silverstone last weekend, I returned home with a distinct pain in my neck. Basically I’ve come to find over the course of researching this column, if walking to the shops and drinking in the pub can really be classed as research, that if you try to look at things around you with a positive attitude, you’ll find things to be positive about. Anyway, that’s cheerful enough for me this month, I’m sure normal service will be resumed next time.

Cosmic Katie‘s Stars
OCTOBER 2014
By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer Aries March 21-April 20 Breaking free from old routines and attachments will be necessary in the next few weeks. Future happiness and dreams will only be realised and achieved by having more time and independence, think very carefully though before you drop friends, quit jobs or ditch partners.
Sell your items for free by simply emailing a brief description and attaching a photo if possible, to

Taurus April 21-May21 Getting away from your usual routine will do you the world of good, a change of scenery or company is just what you need right now. High expectations from a loved one will cause unnecessary pressure, have a heart to heart talk in order to get back on an even keel. Gemini May 22-June 22 You’re on cloud nine this month and you won’t actually believe the turnaround your life has just gone through in the last few weeks, you still need to pinch yourself to check that it’s all real; but it is, and it’s for keeps. However, communication is key in order to avoid crossed wires. Cancer June 23-July 23 A weighty pressure may be resting on your shoulders this month as you go around in circles trying to figure out how to please those around you, especially loved ones. You are doing your very best considering the circumstances, but stand your ground if someone starts to stir the cauldron up with drama, trouble or even lies.
Maroon Ford Focus LX £995 ono Manual, 5-door, Petrol, 1796cc 48,000 miles. In excellent condition with a very low mileage. Leo July 24-August 23 You are in striking distance of one of the most important chapters of your life, for a long time now you have been patiently waiting for the tide to turn, and now it finally is. Your fiery yet vibrant nature is sure to stand you in good stead when you want to be heard and obtain the results you are after.
Full size wooden office desk very good condition £20 ono Contact details: 07967 706536
Virgo August 24-September 23 Pressure from work needs to be addressed, you cannot continue to work at this ridiculous pace, an emergency meeting may be called with all parties expressing their views, by thrashing things out a harmonious conclusion will be reached. Libra September 24-October 23 If certain friends have proved to be unreliable and disappointing, see this as your get-out-of- jail card and cut the ties once and for all, you haven’t room for time wasters. A golden opportunity on the work front needs to be seized, really show people what you are capable of. Scorpio October 24-November 22 If you feel like you are being tested right now either physically, emotionally or even both, this is down to Saturn being in your sign and testing you to the limit. Stamina, patience and quiet reflection are what you need to dig into this month, and in doing so you will reap huge rewards. Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Family and property affairs require your full attention at present, no longer can you continue to bury your head in the sand. Avoid mediating between waring family members, as their reluctance to listen to sense will only cause further disruption. Capricorn December 22-January 20 Selling yourself will attract people who could make a real difference to your career, you will be in demand by the latter half of the month and may not know which way to turn next, money talks, see who is prepared to put the cash on the table. Aquarius January 21-February 19
You would be wise to think about ways to cut costs this month, as there could be a spell of uncertainty or a period of waiting to do before finances start to stabilise, don’t over stretch yourself or spend to impress others.
Pisces February 20-March 20 Fulfilling hopes and dreams takes time, you may well be feeling impatient right now and want everything to hurry along, but all good things come to those who wait. Your health and lifestyle needs to be watched this month, tackle any niggles or complaints.
If it is your birthday this month....
Your work/life balance needs addressing closely if you are to maintain any form of normality, you have nothing to prove by running yourself into the ground, speak up and ask for help, you will be astounded with the options available.
