YOUR COMMUNITY
For the craic and campaigns! There’s a lot more to the WI (Women’s Institute), than you might know already. Imagine if you could spend one evening a month in the company of some great friends, learn a fantastic new skill or craft and at the same time make a difference to other people’s lives. This year in June, WI members voted overwhelmingly to adopt two new campaigns (we call them resolutions). The first was a resolution to campaign for supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to stop wasting so much food. The second resolution is a campaign to improve access for families and carers to relatives who are Dementia sufferers when they need hospitalisation. Every year a member of the WI, someone like you or me, puts forward an issue for a campaign that they feel needs changing or supporting. Many different ideas are submitted and through due process they are whittled down to two which the rest of the members decide to adopt or not. In recent years, WI members have voted to adopt resolutions on
several important issues including ‘SOS for Honey Bees’, ‘More Midwives’, ‘Save Our Libraries’ and the ‘Time to Talk’ Organ Donation campaign. Historically, WI campaigns have included the ‘Right to Analgesia During Childbirth’, the ‘Right For Parents to Visit Sick Children in Hospital’, ‘Fair Pay for Women’ and ‘Mandatory Screening for Breast Cancer’. With such serious campaigns you might wonder how we managed to have fun, but we promise you we do. We take making sure we enjoy ourselves and learning new skills as seriously as we take campaigning for our adopted causes. On Saturday 24 September, the Huntingdon and Peterborough Federation of WIs will be hosting The Big WI Bash at Serpentine Green, Hampton. 10am-4pm So, please come and see us and learn all about the WI and how you can be a part of making history, improving lives and having huge amounts of fun into the bargain. We look forward to seeing you there.

Peterborough Women’s Development Community An exciting opportunity for women in Peterborough! We increasingly hear about the positive benefits of having a diverse workforce. In particular, companies with the highest representation of women on their senior management teams have a 35 percent higher return on equity and 34 percent higher return to shareholders (Catalyst). In the UK only 21% of senior roles are held by women and as at July 2013 there were only 19 female elected presidents and prime ministers in power around the globe. (Forbes). That has just increased by one with recent events! Here in Peterborough, we want to encourage local women who aspire to become managers, leaders or entrepreneurs to become part of a strong and
exciting community focused on women’s development in the workplace. Anna Lee, one of the founding members says “A great deal of inspiration can be gained by sharing challenges, along with success stories and exploring development topics together”. She invites you to mark the date in your calendar to attend the launch of the Peterborough Women’s Development Community on 22 September at 4pm, at the Allia Centre adjacent to the Abax Football Stadium. Details are on the promotional poster. Book your place by emailing michelle.craig@allia.org.uk No membership will apply and all are welcome.

The specials and the blackouts Known as the ‘specials’ the volunteer officers attached to the police station in Stanground patrolled the streets on dark winter evenings and sometimes through the night, so when it was known that German bomber planes were in the area air raid sirens would sound informing everyone in Stanground to get under cover quickly. Hopefully not one flicker of light would be visible from the ground, and this darkness came to be known as the blackout. The reason for these blackouts was that if the bombers spotted a light on the ground below, they could target the area and a bomb could be dropped. As a special constable, my father was primarily required to patrol the streets of Stanground and Fletton. My father became a special as he wanted to help the war effort by giving something back as he always felt fortunate to have survived three years in those appalling trenches of the First World War.
On locking up his butcher’s shop and disregarding his butcher’s apron, he would then report to the local police station to be be paired off with another special. With Great Britain at War with Germany the specials had been trained to stop and search anyone in the middle of darkness.Vigilance and security were paramount at all times. They would then patrol the area they were given and if they saw anyone acting suspiciously on the streets during a long curfew, they had the authority to arrest whoever it may be. That person could then be locked up in the police cells overnight.
Growing up in Stanground In the July issue, Brian told us about his experience meeting Derek who was evacuated from London to Stanground. Derek has kindly written into us to tell us about his time in Stanground. I was six years old when I arrived in Stanground on the 1 September, 1939, when it was my good fortune to be fostered by Tom and Edna Holdich, who lived in Church Street with their sons Tony, Michael and Brian. Their fourth son, Gordon, was born after my arrival. Mr. Holdich was a Master Butcher, and the family shop stood in Church Street a short distance from the family home. I lived with the family for eight years, and during that time attended Chapel Street School,
became a choirboy at the village church, and later on, assisted my ‘Uncle Tom’ by delivering meat to customers in Peterborough by carrier-bike, and accompanied him on the van rounds to the outlying villages. Being an only child, it took me a little while to adapt to life in a large family, but thanks to my ‘Auntie Edna’ and ‘Uncle Tom’, I soon became part of the family, and it is because of their boundless care and kindness that I will always look upon Stanground as my spiritual home.

Praying for Stanground Prayer has always been important to the members of Stanground Baptist Church, but recently we have decided to pray for different areas of Stanground each week eg. Park Farm, Cardea, the old village and this is then publicised on our Sunday news-sheet. This means that over 5 or 6 weeks all the residents, schools and businesses are prayed for. In addition to this initiative there is an established Prayerchain, whereby anyone can ask for prayers for a particular person or situation known to them, such as someone who is going into hospital for an operation, someone who has been bereaved or someone going for an interview for a new job. The prayer request gets passed to volunteers from the church by phone or text and any answers
or news passed back along the chain. The church also has a Prayerbuddy scheme for the children who attend Junior church, so that each child has an adult praying for them on a regular basis and making sure they have someone to talk to if they want to. What links all these and other prayer times in the life of the church is the belief that God loves and cares for all peoples, whether they have a faith or not and as Christians we are called to love others in the same way. We can bring any situation or problem to God and trust that He hears our prayers and will answer. If you are in need of prayer please let us know, either using your name or anonymously. Any request will only be put on the Prayer-chain if you give your permission.

Trust launches new enhanced pregnancy scanning service
Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest we will publish them here.
Peterborough City Hospital has launched a brand new service offering pregnant women, who are under the care of the hospital’s maternity unit, the opportunity to have a 4D scan from 24 weeks onwards.
Mobile Phone Tax Relief for Limited Companies HMRC allow limited companies to provide a director / employee with one mobile phone which can be used in both a business and personal capacity without causing benefit in kind tax issues. However, in order to be able to claim the cost, the phone contract has to be in the name of the limited company, as opposed to a personal contract. You cannot simply pay the monthly phone bill from the companies bank account, the contract itself needs to be between the limited company and the phone provider. It is possible to speak to your mobile phone provider to ask them to officially transfer the contract to the company. If you are going to do this you need to be careful that they don’t put you on a more expensive plan.
However, if you are on a low price monthly plan and do not wish to change your contract, what you could do instead is simply have your limited company purchase a new mobile phone handset directly. This would be allowable as a business expense, meaning 20% corporation tax would be saved on the cost of the handset. Depending on whether the company is VAT registered and what VAT scheme they are on, they may also be able to claim the VAT back on the handset. Please be aware that when it comes to claiming mobile phone expenses, the handset will be an asset of the company, so if it is sold any proceeds will be taxable income for corporation tax purposes (and if VAT registered, VAT will be charged on the sale).
The 4D scan provides women and their partner a unique bonding experience that is similar to a 3D experience but also allows them to see their baby moving in the womb. Lorna Adams, Principal Sonographer, said: “We are proud to offer expectant parents this wonderful experience at a competitive rate and we aim to give the parents the best possible images of their baby. We also offer them a USB memory stick or CD and four black and white prints to take home. “All of the scans are performed by an experienced Sonographer, who will be able to refer women to

Local people are being invited to help shape the future of hospice care in the region. Having expanded services over the past year and with ambitious plans to extend its reach even further in the future, Thorpe Hall Hospice, in Longthorpe, Peterborough is now introducing a service user group to ensure the views of patients, carers and the community are heard. Impact will become a channel of two way communication between users of the Sue Ryder hospice and the hospice’s management team. The group will ensure the views of patients and their families are taken into consideration and feed into plans for the development of services. LEGAL ADVICE
Pensions and Divorce – the Facts We read and hear about celebrity divorces all of the time. The press is full of articles about who got the ‘City Apartment’ or ‘Villa in Marbella’, but what about the less glamorous, but often more valuable asset – The Pension? When couples divorce, the Court must consider all of the assets, including the available pension provision. In many cases, other than the home, the biggest asset is a pension, especially if one party has worked in the public sector or has a final salary scheme pension. Quite often, one party has a greater pension provision than the other, particularly if one partner has spent time out of the workplace looking after the children. The Court has three main options in dealing with pensions upon divorce: • Offsetting – the pension owner keeps their pension and the other retains another asset i.e. house or savings • Attachment orders – the pension remains in the name of the owner but the other “flags” a share of the pension to become payable to them when the pension owner retires
• Pensions sharing orders – pension is split (not always equally) and some of the pension is transferred from that party’s pension to the other party’s pension – they are then in control of how to invest and manage the pension and when to draw the pension. This is the most usual way to split pensions on divorce Pensions are difficult issues to deal with as they are not easy to value. Anyone thinking of divorce or separation should give consideration to all financial issues including pensions but regardless of the issues it is always advisable to obtain some legal advice. Abby Smith of Woolley & Co Solicitors always approaches matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting couples to reach a swift, amicable agreement, specific to their needs.

W
omen aged 17 and above will be eligible to join the Peterborough Royals, that aim to offer junior, youth and noncontact teams within the next three years. American Football is a unique way to get active and meet new people, and with positions to suit all shapes, sizes and fitness levels, is more accessible than many other sports.
The number of women’s teams has grown by 80 per cent in the past year. New players have unprecedented access to international opportunities with the Great Britain team, established in 2012 and currently ranked second in Europe, offering an attainable goal for anyone aspiring to compete at an elite level.
With over 30 years’ experience and a proven track record launching and developing successful clubs, the group behind the project are looking to talk to anyone interested in getting involved, on or off the field. “Playing American Football is great fun” a club spokesperson said “but it takes a committed team of people behind the scenes to get us there in the first place.
“There’s dozens of ways to get involved, from playing to helping out with social media. Everyone has something to offer”. You can find the Peterborough Royals on Facebook and Twitter or for more information, visit getready.org.uk

LOCAL WILDLIFE
Go Wild!
A10 year project - a collaboration with The Wildlife Trust and Perkins Engines across Peterborough has produced lasting results for the wildlife of the area.
T
he Go Wild! project has been a positive force for Peterborough, engaging residents with the rich variety of wildlife on the doorstep and helping preserve valuable wildlife-rich fragment that make the city such an attractive place. The project has offered thousands of people, schools and community groups an introduction to wildlife, nature reserves and their local Wildlife Trust. Community Wildlife Officer at the Wildlife Trust BCN Rachel Price said: “From the beginning Go Wild! has taken people on a journey, offering a variety of ways in which local people can develop their interest in and love of nature. Engagement has been via children’s wildlife clubs, practical conservation work, surveying for wildlife, events, developing local spaces and inspiring others to care; plus family events on the Trust’s nature reserves to outreach projects in communities to engage with newer audiences who are not as familiar with outdoor spaces. Specialist volunteers have supported the day-to-day work of the Wildlife Trust – and at the root is a desire to better provide for wildlife in Peterborough while developing the chances for people to enjoy it.” The funding has been exclusively from the Caterpillar Foundation, administered
through Perkins. The Foundation operates throughout the world and exists to improve local communities. At the core of Go Wild! has been community outreach. “This has included working with local groups who perhaps have a local community green space – a village green, city space or perhaps school grounds – that they want to see improved. We can help them enhance the wildlife interest while making that space a nicer place for people to enjoy,” says Rachel. Many spaces start off as close-mown grassland with very little else; the Go Wild! team have helped with the creation of ponds to wildflower meadows and new woodland, bringing wildlife specialism to transform green spaces for the benefit of both people and wildlife. A good example was at Ravensthorpe Primary School where, in consultation with pupils and staff, a number of project areas were identified within the school’s grounds. Rachel and team developed a pond, running pond-dipping and bug-hunting sessions. A full maintenance plan for the site was written so staff can maintain and develop both its wildlife interest and educational value. To maintain momentum Go Wild! has helped the school find parent volunteers to champion the project and
drive forward future ideas such as a mini-orchard and marsh garden. One of the more unusual projects was at St Botolph’s Church, Longthorpe, where the church community wanted to know how they could improve their churchyard. “Old churchyards are fantastic wildlife resources, especially lichens and mosses,” explains Rachel. “We did a lichen survey and found a nationally rare lichen in the churchyard. One of the country’s leading lichenologists led a lichen safari with another local lichen enthusiast; we’ve made recommendations about site management to include conservation of the lichens, as well as creating areas of wildflowers and increasing the number of hedges.” Clearly, the Go Wild! project has had a profound impact across Peterborough: new spaces for wildlife created, green spaces transformed, and people from all walks of life discovering the natural world that’s all around them. The future of the city’s wildlife is promising.

Our biggest recruitment challenge to date...
F
ostering has changed dramatically in recent years, making it harder than ever before for local authorities to recruit good foster carers. Peterborough City Council explain why they are having to ask for more than ever before from prospective new foster carers, and how to get in touch if you can help. We’ve had great success over the past few years recruiting more than 80 new fostering households - however this, combined with several other factors have resulted in some significant changes in local fostering. So what does that mean for a prospective foster carer in Peterborough? “You’ve recruited 80 new foster carers, how can you still need more?” we hear you ask… Government led adoption reforms and newer initiatives such as “Fostering to Adopt” have seen greater numbers of younger children securing permanency at an earlier stage, meaning less are placed in temporary foster care – an excellent result, but one which means we’ve seen a drop in the need for foster carers able to care for babies and toddlers and with many foster carers already approved for these groups, demand currently outweighs supply. Today, more than 60% of the children in our care are aged 10 and above and it’s in this area we intend to focus our recruitment efforts for the next 12 months. So what do you need to know? Whilst the welfare of young people is our top priority, ensuring the wellbeing of our carers is equally important and we will always look to avoid making placements which would compromise your existing family dynamic. Caring for older children, whilst undoubtedly more rewarding carries a greater risk making it difficult for us to place teenagers with fostering families who already have younger children at
home – for this reason, we are looking for carers whose children have already grown up, moved out or are leaving for university later this year. As a foster carer, you’re so much more than just a bed for the night, you’re an advocate for young people and will need to attend various meetings, to contribute to the development of their care plan, or to review their progress with your supervising social worker. It’s important you are available to attend these meetings, which isn’t always possible when working full time. That’s why applicants will need to demonstrate their availability, so if you’re working part time, semi-retired, or have the security to put your skills and experience to good use without reliance on fostering to provide a regular income, then we’d love to talk to you. Finally, you must have a spare bedroom. It might sound obvious, but young people in care are already in a period of significant change, a personal space to call their own is essential to give some stability during an otherwise confusing time. We’re realistic
about the challenge we face, and we know that many of the people who might make the best carers will have other commitments which prevent them from doing so right now, but if just one percent of Peterborough residents could nominate one potential carer who ticked the boxes above, that could mean dozens of new foster carers, better futures for children, and more money for the local authority to invest back into the services families need most.
If you’d like more information on becoming a foster carer for Peterborough City Council, you can request an information pack by calling 01733 317427 or visiting our website www.peterboroughfostering.co.uk stanground gazette September 2016 www.stangroundgazette.co.uk 23

Shampoo hair in warm water and rinse hair with cool water to close the hair follicles. This will limit damage during styling and will also maximize shine. Always use a heat protector, like this one, when styling your hair. GHD Heat Protect Spray, John Lewis £12.95 Swop every other wash for a cleansing conditioner. Shampoos can sometimes do ‘too good a job’ at cleaning your hair and strips out the natural oils, leaving hair frizzy and dry. A no ‘poo’ cleansing treatment avoids this and helps replenish the natural oils in your hair. Ojon Rare blend moisture rich cleansing conditioner John Lewis £18.50 Silicone free conditioner. Many conditioners contain silicones which coat the hair creating a smooth feel and shiny look. Although this can look nice, it’s not always great for your hair, especially curly hair. If you find your hair is dry and frizzy try this range from The Body Shop which has no silicones, paraffins or sulphates. Time to get prepared for the big boiler switch on – winter’s on the way
by Eileen Le Voi
September – late summer or early autumn?
W
hatever your take on it – it’s the perfect month to get your boiler checked and serviced before winter kicks in. The days might be warm, but the nights are already turning a bit chilly. With most people ‘hanging out’ until October to turn on their boilers after the summer months, it is essential that you use the next few weeks to ensure your boiler gets the professional once over. Your boiler has been working throughout the year giving you all the hot water you require, and as we are about to enter the autumn and winter months when your boiler will also be providing your home with heat and taking on an additional workload – it’s time to get in touch
gas/oil, boiler and central heating plumbers and engineers all over the PE area. So, for peace of mind and to avoid the misery of a boiler breakdown this winter, what should you do to prepare your central heating for the cold weather? Annual boiler services The weeks leading up to winter are the best times for boiler services and safety checks; months of disuse can create problems in gas appliances, and these problems can lead to central heating system failures when the appliance begins operating in winter. The best way to nip boiler faults in the bud is to arrange a boiler service. If you can get your boiler serviced before the winter strikes, you can identify and resolve any problems swiftly. The last thing you want is to have no central heating or hot water on a freezing winter morning! Visit www.safelocaltrades.com to find a recommended engineer in your area. Insulate your pipes

When the weather drops below zero, standing water in your pipes can freeze, which can block up your plumbing system. As water expands
when it turns into ice, frozen pipes are also particularly likely to rupture and break. Pipe insulation is a simple, cost-effective solution to this problem. Check your radiators The approach of winter is also a good time to bleed radiators. This will ensure that your central heating operates efficiently – if there is air trapped in the radiator, then it will not warm up as well as it would if it was full of water, and might not even properly warm up at all. Test it in the autumn British households typically switch their central heating on in October. You may not realise that a fault has developed in your boiler until you turn it on just before winter, and by this point, all the reputable plumbers may be extremely busy.
