Registration now open for Thorpe Hall’s Starlight Hike It’s time to dust off your trainers, grab a friend and get registered for this year’s Thorpe Hall Hospice Starlight Hike.

A

fter a year’s break, the popular fundraising event is back in the calendar, on Saturday, August 8, with a new look, a new route and a lots of new reasons to get involved. For those looking for a challenge there’s a 10km route taking in some of Peterborough’s prettiest parkland. For those keen to take the more leisurely option, or maybe looking for a family challenge, there’s a 5km circuit available. Both routes will start and finish at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough, with the start scheduled for early evening so walkers return for their triumphant finish down Thorpe Hall’s stunning drive as the sun sets. There will be a warm-up to get those feet moving before the starting pistol is fired, and

entertainment along the marshalled route to keep the motivation levels high. There’ll be a barbecue in the beautiful gardens of Thorpe Hall Hospice and activities to keep the supporters busy while the walkers are on route. All the money raised at this year’s Starlight Hike will help pay for the services in the new Thorpe Hall Hospice, which will welcome patients from the start of July. Thorpe Hall’s senior event fundraiser Jo Killick said: “We’re thrilled to have the Starlight Hike back on our events calendar and delighted that, this year, we will be able to start and finish at Thorpe Hall. Walking down the drive as the sun sets, to be welcomed by staff and patients will, we’re sure, make it a really memorable occasion.”

The event is open to all ages including children. It costs just £15 to enter with all entrants receiving a must-have Starlight Hike t-shirt to wear during the event. Walkers are asked to raise £100 through sponsorship. To find out more about this year’s Starlight Hike visit www.sueryder.org/starlighthike/thorpehall or call the fundraising team on 01733 225993.

The Wildlife Trust

Wessex Close, Stanground A wetland reserve with its own distinctive habitat.

C

ut off from the rest of the washes by a busy railway line and enclosed by parallel flood banks, this reserve has its own distinct habitat. This area of wash land is flooded each winter providing a winter refuge for waterfowl and nesting space for waders. In the summer, it is grazed. The network of deep and shallow ditches host rare beetles and, along the southern margin of the reserve, the river contains nationally scarce plants such as fringed water-lily and grass-wrack pondweed, and spined-loach, a rare European fish. The site is very good for birds, so sit awhile with your binoculars and you might be lucky enough to hear snipe, redshank and sandpipers, or catch a glimpse of a peregrine as it stirs alarmed waders into flight.

Holylake Drive, Stanground Nestled among houses, a collection of small ponds and meadow that is a local stronghold for newts.

V

isitors who stumble upon this tiny site will find what remains of a wet meadow and pond system that predates the housing estate. Great crested newts and smooth newts share this refuge and it is thought to be one of the best breeding sites in Peterborough. Scattered around the site you will find piles of logs and grass clippings, left to provide shelter for the adult newts. As well as being important for newts, the ponds are home to a range of damselflies and dragonflies. At the height of the summer butterflies will float gently above the meadow.

New Councillor highlights his concerns “As one of the new Councillors for Stanground Central, writes Ray Wisby, I would like to thank everyone who voted for me in the recent local election.

W Stanground Chat Club Stanground Chat Club is a club for retired people that meets in Stanground at Kingfisher Court from 2-4pm every other Tuesday.

T

he club offers a chance to meet other people and have a cup of tea whilst enjoying a varied programme of social activities. In the coming months, for example there is a tea party with British Sugar, a reminiscences workshop with Eastern Angles Theatre Company, flower arranging and an exercise class. This is a friendly club costing just £1 per session, where new members will always receive a warm welcome. So, why not come along and join Stanground Chat Club this month on 14 and 28 July.

hilst out campaigning, one of the main complaints was the cutbacks on grass cutting. Along with Councillor Chris Harper, of Park Farm, I put forward my reasons for this cutback to be repealed. I stated that dog walkers, whilst trying to do the right thing and remove their dog’s mess, found that in the long grass it was just smearing on the long blades of grass. Children should not be playing in grass, amongst dog mess, and consequently are forced to stay at home, or end up gathering with their friends on street corners. When children loiter, some people feel they are up to no good and label them a bad bunch. However, although this is not often correct, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, with children thinking they may as well be what people label them as. The children get no exercise and are then at risk of becoming obese. For the community it looks like their home area is neglected and can lead to them not bothering about their own property. The saving for not cutting the grass was in the area of £24,000. There is a further problem that residents and all Councillors in the area should be worried about. There is a proposal to build an Anaerobic Digestion Plant on the old London Crane site at Horsey Toll. This would involve putting large propane gas tanks underground, which can never be regarded as 100 per cent safe. Large 10x15 metre tanks would be visible on site with open pools of liquid and mounds of solid waste. There is a chance of fluid leaking into the water table and river, as has happened in the past, when it killed fish and affected other wildlife. The road infrastructure is not sufficient for the 24-hour a day deliveries and collections from the site, making already long tailbacks at certain times of the day even longer. There will be smells from the plant which could prevent the enjoyment of the countryside and gardens, with residents not opening windows and hanging washing out. House prices will be affected in the future should this plant be permitted to go ahead. Again I thank everyone who voted for me and let you know I will be fighting for the whole of the community to improve our area.”

COMMUNITY NEWS

Stanground & Farcet C of E Churches This year in July our churches and our community are really excited to be welcoming a new full time member of staff. His name is Staffan Dawkins and he will be here for three years. I am sure you will soon see him around the place, in the schools and leading various services so here is just a little of what he has told me about himself: “I was born in the Parish of St Elizabeth in Jamaica, but grew up in the country’s capital city of Kingston,

before moving to London to start a new life. After spending 12 years working in banking and marketing I felt called to ministry within the Church

and began training as a Counselling Psychologist for Christian Ministry. “Later I pursued a career in the Health and Social Care sector and worked as a Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Mental Capacity Advocate across several London Boroughs, while being actively involved in Church and parish life. When later I realised my call was to ordained ministry, I went on to train at the South East Institute for Theological Education in London and Westcott House in Cambridge.“ Staffan’s name really is spelt like this. Many of us are used to Stefan, or Steven but I for one have never met a Staffan before. I am looking forward to hearing the origins of his unusual name. Maybe it’s Jamaican?

Stanground resident Anne Rowcliffe has announced the launch of The Little Yellow Duck Project, involving leaving hand-crafted ducks for people to find.

T

he finder is invited, by the attached label, to register the duck on a website which details the importance of blood, organ and tissue donation and has a link to the organ donation register. (Thelittleyellowduckproject.org) This project was launched on 15 April 2014 in memory of Anne’s daughter, Clare, who died whilst awaiting a lung transplant. As part of this project, on 4 July Anne will launch 60 yellow helium balloons, with hand-crafted yellow ducks attached, from her garden in Oakdale Avenue. Anne chose 60 as she will have just reached her 60th birthday and the following week is Organ Donation week. If you look at the sky at 1pm you may see them floating off with their life changing messages. If you are lucky enough to find a yellow duck then please let us know by tweeting @stangroundmag or through our Facebook page with a picture of the duck.

MONEY MATTERS

Do you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co on info@birdnco.co.uk and if of general interest, it will be published here!

Question: I’ve been told I can pay my self-assessment tax online instead of sending a cheque or making a payment to HMRC at the Post Office or my local bank? Answer: Yes you can – HMRC has enhanced its online payment service, which now accepts credit Visa and MasterCard and debit card payments for not only self-assessment, but VAT and Corporation Tax. Taxpayers can find this service at the www.gov.uk website and by following the links are transferred to new payment screens, operated by Worldpay. HMRC has said their ‘customers’ have told them they are happy with the service, and they are making further improvements by listening and acting on the feedback. The service will soon accept Employers PAYE, Stamp Duty Land Tax and some miscellaneous payments by credit and debit card, and will eventually replace Billpay. Tax Tip – Pre-Letting Property Expenses: Expenses may be incurred on a property before the first rental receipt is received (for example, travel, phone, advertising, etc.). If so, a deduction may be possible once the letting starts. Relief is only allowable under these special rules where the expenditure is:

■ incurred within a period of seven years before the date the rental income actually starts; and is not otherwise allowable as a deduction for tax purposes (i.e. against any other income or capital); and ■ would have been allowed as a deduction if it had been incurred after the rental business started. Letting expenditure incurred pre-commencement is treated as having been incurred on the day on which the rental income starts and then added to other allowable letting expenses incurred during the tax year. This total amount is then deducted from the total letting receipts for that year. The expenses must not be for the purchase of capital items. Capital expenditure is potentially deductible but there are separate rules of calculation. Costs incurred in relation to the actual purchase of the property, including legal fees, are a capital cost allowed against the proceeds of the eventual disposal of property under the capital gains tax rules.

Successful boat project completed at Grafham Water Centre

O

n Tuesday 9 June at 3pm, a group of students from the Stanground Academy celebrated their sailing projects at Grafham Water Centre. A group of 30 students have been working closely with staff at Grafham Water Centre for the last two years to restore an old Wayfarer Sailing Dinghy as part of Grafham Water Centre’s Boat Project. The Grafham Water Centre Boat Project was introduced in 2013 by a local Huntingdonshire Secondary School and has grown into a very worthwhile project for other local schools. The Project works with students to help them develop practical life skills and gain in confidence and self-esteem. The work they complete during the project is included in their individual school portfolios and counts towards their final school grades. At first, only a small group of students from the Stanground Academy were involved, however, the Academy’s participation soon grew as other students showed an interest. The project resulted in the Academy having its own sailing boat in which students could learn to sail. A ceremony was held in June 2014 when ‘Stanground I’ was launched in front of the students who had worked so hard to rescue the

boat. In fact the project was so successful that the Academy has since acquired a second boat which is currently undergoing an extensive refurbishment, again, with students carrying out the bulk of the work. As part of the Project, the students have been learning to sail by working their way through The Royal Yachting Association’s Youth Sailing Scheme qualifications with the ultimate aim of taking the Academy’s boats out on to Grafham Water. Educational Visits Co-originator Mike Murray from the Stanground Academy said: “It quickly became apparent from the first boat project, that the students were gaining so much from their involvement. That is why we have extended the scheme and have purchased a second boat, which was worked on over the winter and will hopefully be completed by the end of this year. It is especially pleasing to see students who don’t necessarily excel academically developing a range of skills, both practically/manually and also in problem solving, planning, numeracy and literacy.

This event is a great way to celebrate the hard work of the students and showcase their achievements to a wider audience.

For more information about Grafham Water Centre and the Grafham Water Centre Boat Project, please contact Alison Baines on 01480 810521 or visit www.grafham-water-centre.co.uk

Principal Ged Rae said: “This is another example of the high quality extra-curricular opportunities available to Stanground Academy students. Activities such as this allow our students to develop new talents, improve confidence and above all have fun. I am grateful to the staff involved for their hard work and commitment to the innovative project. Grafham Water Centre Development Officer Alison Baines said: “It has been great seeing how enthusiastic and hard working the Stanground Academy students have been. Grafham Water Centre has been able to show them another side to the outdoor learning industry. They have gained useful skills, including their RYA Stage 1 Sailing qualifications. We are really looking forward to seeing them out on the water in their very own Wayfarer Dinghy.”

MR HOLMES

AMY

Released 17 July certificate PG

Released 3 July

A long-retired Sherlock Holmes lives in a sleepy village outside of London with his housekeeper and her amateur-sleuthing son. With his legendary mental powers on the wane and minus his sidekick Watson, Holmes becomes haunted by an unsolved case from 50 years ago where he remembers only fragments. Starring Ian Mckellen as Sherlock Holmes.

From a BAFTA award-winning director, Amy tells the incredible story of six-time Grammy-winner Amy Winehouse. Featuring extensive unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks, this strikingly modern, moving and vital film shines a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few can. A once-in-a-generation talent, Amy Winehouse was a musician that captured the world’s attention. Her huge success, however, resulted in relentless and invasive media attention which coupled with Amy’s troubled relationships and precarious lifestyle saw her life tragically begin to unravel. Amy Winehouse died from alcohol poisoning in July 2011 at the age of 27.

MINIONS MOVIE Released 10 July Meet Stuart, Kevin and Bob as they embark on a journey for their new master. The story of the Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. After accidentally killing off so many of them – from T. rex to Napoleon – the Minions find themselves without a master to serve and fall into a deep depression. Starring Sandra Bullock as Scarlet Overkill.

TERMINATOR – GENISYS Released 1 July The Terminator is back . . . When John Connor, leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Now, Sgt. Reese finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past, where he is faced with unlikely allies, including the Guardian, dangerous new enemies, and an unexpected new mission: To reset the future.

Well the festival season is now in full swing with a variety of events going on in and around Peterborough. It’s the perfect excuse to get out in the great outdoors, listen to some live music and sup on your favourite tipple with friends and family.

PUB GRUB

T

he Green Meadows Festival will be taking place in nearby Oundle from 3-5 July with the Stereo MCs, The Ragamuffins, Gangsters, Latino Sound and Mark Morriss from The Bluetones to name a few (£40 per adult for three days including camping). The Willow Festival Sadly The Willow Festival has been postponed until July 2016. The organisers told the Gazette that it had been a very hard decision and they were very disappointed. The decision having been made to secure the longevity, security and growth of The Willow Festival for the future. Despite the many public donations and sponsorship secured, the festival faced a shortfall in bringing the quality of event that the organisers wished to deliver. Thanking all those who had donated this year, both financially and with their time voluntarily, the organisers say that no effort has been in vain. And all of the band applications will be carried forward for 2016. The dates for 2016 will be 8-10 July, so please put these in your diaries. Again thanking all their supporters for their continued and unprecedented support, the Willow’s organisers say the support is very much appreciated as always, and they are looking forward to next month and Peterborough’s annual Beer Fest.

E: roz@stangroundgazette.co.uk

The Heron During June and July The Heron will be running a ‘Roll a 6 @ 6’ event. If you can roll a six on a dice, you will receive your round absolutely free! This takes place between 6-7pm daily for June and July. The Heron continues with darts on Monday nights, quiz and Play Your Cards Right on Tuesday nights from 8pm and pool on Thursdays. Entertainment for Friday and Saturday nights is listed in the Gig Guide. Remember that their back Function Room is available to rent – which Meri assures me is at very reasonable prices. Their enclosed garden is ideal for those lovely sunny summer days and evenings. The Golden Lion The Golden Lion has got its For Sale signs up once again and has now been boarded up. Anyone got around £350K to spare? Charters Charters hold an Open Mic night every third Monday from 8pm, which is hosted by Ben Rogers-White. They hold a weekly general knowledge quiz every Thursday from 8pm. It is free to enter with a £20 bar tab for the winning team. 18 July Rock for Research – Fund-raising event run by Kidney Research UK

Make your own

ice cream! Pensions and Divorce THE FACTS

W

e read and hear about celebrity divorces all of the time. The press is full of articles about who got the ‘City Apartment’ or ‘Villa in Marbella’, but what about the less glamorous, but often more valuable asset – the pension? When couples divorce, the Court must consider all of the assets, including the available pension provision. In many cases, other than the home, the biggest asset is a pension, especially if one party has worked in the public sector or has a final salary scheme pension. Quite often, one party has a greater pension provision than the other, particularly if one partner has spent time out of the workplace looking after the children. The Court has three main options in dealing with pensions upon divorce:

v Offsetting – the pension owner keeps their pension and the other retains another asset i.e. house or savings

v Attachment orders – the pension remains in the name of the owner but the other ‘flags’ a share of the pension to become payable to them when the pension owner retires

v Pensions sharing orders – pension is split (not always equally) and

some of the pension is transferred from that party’s pension to the other party’s pension – they are then in control of how to invest and manage the pension and when to draw the pension. This is the most usual way to split pensions on divorce.

Pensions are difficult issues to deal with as they are not easy to value. Anyone thinking of divorce or separation should give consideration to all financial issues including pensions but regardless of the issues it is always advisable to obtain some legal advice. Abby Smith of Woolley & Co Solicitors always approaches matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting couples to reach a swift, amicable agreement, specific to their needs. For any Family Law queries please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Abby Smith – 01480 270499 or 07948 533610 abby.smith@family-lawfirm.co.uk

FOOD & DRINK

Whilst ice-cream vans may be a seasonal delight, the confection itself is of course readily available from our supermarkets all year round in an astonishing array of different flavour combinations. But it has to be said there’s nothing quite like the home-made variety and all you need is an ice cream maker!

A

firm favourite is real vanilla ice-cream made with a rich home-made egg custard infused with seeds from a vanilla pod. It’s delicious on its own, but it also makes basic desserts such as fruit crumble or cinnamon-baked bananas into something special. In addition, you can incorporate all sorts of extras to add different flavours and textures: small pieces of good quality caramel or fudge, a marbling of raspberry purée, chopped strawberries, slivers of stem ginger, or even finely-chopped chilli with chocolate. And for a luscious, grown-up, boozy version, try adding whisky and a little Manuka honey – go steady with any alcohol though, as it slows down the freezing process quite considerably. Experimenting with flavours is great fun, and well worth the effort. However, if you’re in a hurry, the following is a very speedy vanilla ice-cream using good quality ready-made custard from the supermarket chiller cabinet: it takes about 15 minutes from start to finish!*

500g tub vanilla custard (e.g. ‘Taste the Difference’ or ‘Finest’) 300ml carton double cream 2-3 tbsp icing sugar (sifted) 1-2 tsp vanilla extract (not essence) Whisk everything together in a large jug, then pour into the ice-cream maker following the manufacturer’s instructions. Process until the volume increases and the desired consistency is achieved. A delicious accompaniment to nectarines baked in a little dessert wine and sprinkled with crushed amaretti biscuits. *Recipe suitable for machines with a 1.4 litre capacity. Reduce quantities for smaller machines.

Try our own beef and lamb, local pork, homemade sausages and other lovely produce.

Success at Sawtry Sixes Pumas U10s victorious in Sawtry among a sea of black & red

P

by Ciaran McAuley

umas embarked on another of our summer tournaments over a weekend in May. We were welcomed by the dedicated volunteers of Sawtry Colts FC, who had put on a great tournament over the weekend. On Sunday the Pumas arrived in force. We had brought 10 teams and it was like looking over a sea of Red & Black hoops as Pumas were playing on every pitch. A really proud moment for all the Pumas volunteers was seeing the 60+ young Pumas representing our fabulous little club from our Super U7s through to the tenacious U10s, who managed to walk away as the U10 Sawtry 6s champions for 2015. It’s not often that our young Pumas get the chance to win competitions; we’ve never been a club where the winning is

the most important thing. But I have no problem in crediting these lads once in a while and saying how proud I was of their efforts. They were all superb in their perseverance and eventual belief in their own ability and deserve the accolades for a great performance on the day. This win, coupled with the superb representation of Pumas talent across all of our younger age groups, was a real sight to behold and a fabulous advertisement. Something that was commented on to all our coaches throughout the day. Huge thanks must go to all the fabulous volunteer coaches and of course the parents and players for all their commitment to Pumas come rain or shine. GO PUMAS!

If you would be interested in joining our great club as either a coach, volunteer or player in one of our teams then please contact the chairman Ciaran McAuley on 07713106898.

PET CARE

On 1 June, Cats Protection Peterborough launched their 8 week snip n chip for £10 campaign. This offer is separate from the long standing neutering assistance plan in place to help cat owners on low income or receipt of qualifying benefits. This great short term offer is open to anyone owning either a male or female cat and enables cats to be microchipped ensuring a permanent method of identification which increases the chances of a lost cat being safely reunited with its owner.

S Long, hot summer ahead for local cat charity

o, why launch this additional scheme? The answer is simple, getting the neutering message across is a tough hurdle for cat welfare and the vast majority of people are not neutering their cats early enough to avoid unwanted cats and kittens. Cats can start breeding from as young as four months of age. Without neutering, the UK’s cat population quickly gets out of control and each summer as a charity we are overwhelmed with kittens in need of homes. Last year we saw the numbers of abandoned pregnant stray cats soar, and unwanted kittens were at an all-time high. 80 per cent of these were under a year old, a gym slip mum, little more than kittens

themselves. Cats are prolific breeders, one unneutered female can produce 18 kittens a year and can be responsible for 20,000 descendants in just five years. So, it’s easy to see how the problem can escalate. In 2014 the branch neutered in excess of 800 cats and this year the calls reporting pregnant strays came much sooner than we had anticipated. A heavily pregnant stray came into our branch on 19 January and the first litter of 2015 were born days later. And the calls have not stopped since. As a charity we recognise the need to both educate and help Peterborough cat owners who for whatever reason have not had their cat neutered.

To take advantage of this offer cat owners need to call the helpline on 0345 271 3750 to request a voucher and they will be directed to one of the participating veterinary practices.

CONSUMER ADVICE

by Eileen Le Voi

Top five D E L A E V E R

1 Bank scam emails

email scams

Nine out of ten emails sent worldwide can be regarded as spam; undoubtedly a large proportion of that spam will be scams trying to get your hard earned money. A recent survey has revealed the top five email scams to be aware of this year.

A few pieces of key information may be all the scammers need to get into your account. Emails often say there’s a problem with your account, and ask you to update your account details, either by email or by clicking on a link. Never click on a link in an email. Call your bank or go directly to your bank’s official website.

2 PayPal scam emails PayPal emails are definitely on the increase. A legitimate email from PayPal won't ask you for sensitive information such as your password, bank account or credit card details, nor will it have attachments or ask you to download/install any software.

3 Tax rebate scam The HMRC was notified of almost 75,000 scam emails between April and September 2014, and they were only the ones that were reported! Promising a tax rebate, such emails often ask for key information including account numbers and passwords to make the payment. HMRC never asks for bank details via email.

4 Scam emails purporting to be from HM Revenue & Customs Other HMRC scam emails can take several forms – a mistake on a self-assessment form, or that a tax notice has been issued. You may be asked to verify your identity by providing a copy of your passport. Never respond to these emails or provide a copy of your ID. For queries, contact HMRC directly for advice.

5 Scam emails seeking money for services or help Emails asking for money for services or help continue to be prevalent. Scammers are constantly refining this technique, which will often prey upon the most vulnerable with desperate pleas for aid or offers of low investment and high return. Unsolicited contact, promising a return too good to be true – will be exactly that. To report any type of fraud, please visit www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud or telephone 0300 123 2040 To find vetted and approved local traders, go to www.safelocaltrades.com or call 01733 530019
