Spring Edition

WELCOME Welcome to our Spring Issue of Term Times magazine! As ever, you will find this issue packed with interesting articles, great competitions and suggestions for trips out with the family. As it’s Spring, we have been to the West Norfolk/ King’s Lynn area to discover the many attractions for families. With the warmer weather around the corner, the prospect of some fun days on the beach without an overly arduous car journey is definitely welcome. Fast approaching is the 2014 football World Cup and we offer some predictions. Still on football, Beverley Clarkson at the Cambridgeshire FA explains what to look out for at your local grassroots club and we’ve also grabbed an interview with Peterborough United star, Britt Assombalonga, to ask him about his experiences, both at Posh and back in his school days. If it’s competition prizes you like going after, then we have a special one provided by Peterborough United and others from Stamford Arts Centre, Lego and many more. We believe we have produced a cracking issue that is interesting, informative and entertaining in equal parts - but we would love to hear from you if you want to suggest what else we should include to make Term Times even better.

Good sports at Whittlesey primary school Alderman Jacobs Primary School pupils, dressed in sports kit and ‘onesies’, took part in a 2 kilometre fun run in the school grounds to raise funds in support of Sport Relief 2014.

The Foster Care Co-operative

A cake sale at playtime attracted donations from students, while staff dressed up for the event which raised £497 for Sport Relief. The funds will help people living incredibly tough lives, both at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries. Mrs Carlisle, Acting Head teacher at Alderman Jacobs Primary School, said:

Bourne to swim!

It was wonderful to see the whole school participating and raising money to help others. The event was thought up and organised by our fundraising committee made up of children in years 4, 5 and 6. The year 6 pupils in particular worked very hard and we are all proud of the whole school’s achievements.

Since then Little Voices has gone from strength to strength! Our pupils work in small groups (up to 8 children per class) so that we are able to give each child the individual training and attention that they deserve, whilst they still learn to work as part of a team. We work in association with LAMDA (The London Academy Of Music And Dramatic Art) and school aged children from 4 - 18 years are able to take their exams, performing everything from dramatic acting pieces to scenes from the world of musical theatre. We are very proud of our 100% success rate in exams, with over 90% at merit and distinction. The Little Voices holiday workshops and theatre showcases have proved very popular too, where children can sing, dance and act their way through the school holidays! So, whether you are looking for expert tuition in drama and singing for a child who is destined for the stage - or you would simply like your child to have more confidence in social situations, the small class sizes at Little Voices means that we can achieve all of this for you. Here to help Peterborough Families Information Service is striving to become the first point of contact for families experiencing problems who would like some financial advice or maybe just need help sourcing the right kind of childcare for their needs.

What else do we do?

We don’t always have all the answers. We will, however, always try to find out as much as we possibly can and, if necessary, signpost callers to the most appropriate service if it is outside of our expertise. We also manage a very comprehensive directory of services that may be able to help or simply be of interest to many families. In addition, the website holds a record of any activities we are made aware of, ranging from Teddy Bears Picnics or reading sessions at the local library to large scale events taking place in or around the city.

Financial • To encourage the take-up of funding for all 3 and 4 year old’s childcare and also to identify any children that qualify for the 2 year old funding. • Offer advice or assistance in cases of hardship by exploring any benefits for which they may be eligible, thereby helping to reduce poverty. Extra Support Service (Brokerage) • Going the ‘extra mile’ to assist our clients with specific or unusual requirements. • This can take many forms and be on a variety of different subjects ranging from financial difficulties to relationship issues or sourcing childcare for a child with special needs or for unusual hours.

• To register, visit www.peterborough.gov.uk/fis and select ‘Disability and Special Needs’. • We are currently producing photo ID cards for all the children on the database which should prove very useful for days out, eliminating the need to carry around further documentation with you, and we are trying to negotiate some additional benefits as well…so watch this space!

Signpost callers • Children’s Centres and any activities they may have. • Parenting courses. • What’s going on in and around Peterborough. Discover more about this town’s fascinating maritime history...

The rich maritime past of King’s Lynn is making the attractive West Norfolk town a popular attraction for tourists... By the 13th century, King’s Lynn was England’s fourth largest port and was recognised as being a key trading post by the medieval Hanseatic League, a union of German towns working together to improve trading conditions who established a warehouse in the town in 1475. The building is still there. Visitors of all ages can explore the King’s Lynn Maritime Trail to discover stories of the town’s merchants, ship-builders, sailors, fishermen, press gangs, porters and pubs that have provided so much history. Pick up a 50p trail guide and look out for 27 bronze way markers as you walk the quaysides, market places and historic streets.

Custom House, now the Tourist Information Centre, is one of the town’s most iconic landmarks.

The guides are available from from the Tourist Information Centre in the Custom House (open daily) or True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum where the trail starts. The museum (open Tuesday to Saturday) is in the North End of the old town where fishermen once lived and worked in a close-knit community. Squeeze into the only two remaining fisherfolk cottages, visit the old smithy, a Victorian smokehouse and a fully-restored 1904 Lynn fishing smack.

A battle re-enactment in front of West Norfolk’s Castle Rising.

Sandringham Flower Show. Youngsters are admitted free.

The famous Hunstanton sunset.

West Norfolk Special events worth noting in your diary are the town’s carnival in June, the kite festival and tennis tournament in August and the returning allaction Lifestyles Festival in September.

A glimpse of everything to do in this special area of charm and natural beauty...

All roads in summer often lead to the classic resort of Hunstanton where Victorian charm combines with traditional seaside fun. For years ‘Sunny Hunny’ - the only East coast town to face west - has been the ideal base for enjoying coast and countryside. Funfairs, gardens, walks over the striped cliffs, a land train to the lighthouse, pony and boat rides, rock pools, bandstand music and theatre shows, Hunstanton has everything for a day trip or a week’s holiday. And then there’s those famed world-class sunsets at the end of a happy day when the water seems to turn pure gold.

But what else is in and around Hunstanton that can offer holiday pleasure for all age groups? Here are a few ideas: • Snettisham Wildlife Park, a busy, 392-acre working farm, has a unique 45-minute tractor and covered trailer deer safari ride - with a live commentary - that enables you to hand-feed a herd of over 50 hinds and some awesome stags. During the deer calving months of May, June and July, a beautiful new calf might be observed at Snettisham Wildlife Park. During late spring and summer, younger visitors can enjoy the new Young Drivers activity - a chance for budding farmers to practice their tractor driving skills. There are also three farm trails. • Sandringham House is the much-loved country retreat of Her Majesty the Queen and has been the private home of four generations of British monarchs since 1862. The house is set in stunning gardens. Look out for the royal family’s toy cars in the museum. The Country Park is open to the public free of charge every day. Marvel at the mass of rhododendrons in May. • The private Norton Hill Light Railway at Hall Farm, Snettisham, has four wonderful narrow-gauge locomotives to transport passengers around a one kilometre-long track that includes viaducts and a tunnel. It operates for charity on a few weekends each year in July and August. • Sandringham Flower Show on July 30th is one of the most prestigious horticultural events in the East of England. Many of the region’s leading nurseries exhibit and there are show gardens by leading designers, 200 trade stands, craft marquee and arena entertainment.. The £10 adult entrance fee allows entry to Sandringham grounds, museum and church. • The 12th century stone keep at Castle Rising is amongst the finest surviving examples of its kind in the country and, together with the massive surrounding earthworks, ensures that it’s a castle of national importance. • Escape from the car and jump onto the Coasthopper bus to explore the coast and villages all the way from Hunstanton to Cromer. • If you want to find out more about Hunstanton’s growth from Victorian creation to what it is now, visit the town’s free Heritage Centre, open most weekends. • A little further afield but well worth the journey to the south of the region is WWT Welney, a beautiful wetland reserve and eco-friendly visitor centre with so much to see. In spring, watch breeding birds and chicks while in summer see dragonflies, butterflies, and wildflowers. The Ouse Washes in winter are home to thousands of whooper and Bewick’s swans, the largest gathering in the UK. Open every day, Welney has lots for families such as their pond dipping stations and a variety of hides to observe waders in the summer.

West Norfolk ha s great beaches for making sandca stles!

Food and Drink >> continued from previous page

There is no shortage of excellent family-friendly pubs, restaurants and tea-rooms all the way from King’s Lynn to Hunstanton. The Farmer’s Arms near King’s Lynn, the Feathers at Dersingham, the Old Bank at Snettisham and the cafe at Heacham Lavender are just a few worth deviating off the A149 for refreshment.

Best Beaches If it’s sand to dig and to make castles, Hunstanton and Heacham both have plenty of ideal beaches for family fun. For even greater expanses and small lagoons for toddlers to play in, better to go to Old Hunstanton and, a little further on, Thornham. But it is recommended the local tide table is studied beforehand so the beaches aren’t covered by water upon arrival!

DISCOVER

But one of the most popular places along this part of the coast is the Ancient Mariner Inn at Old Hunstanton with its spectacular views across the Wash. Dating back to the 1600s, there are low beams, snug seating and lots of nooks and crannies where hearty meals are served. Outside it’s a great place to watch the famous sunsets. Ladybird lovers

the ladybird In Scotland young girls would ask was to find their true love. The ladybird ld say: wou girls the and air the in wn thro “Fly away east or fly away west, I like best.” And show me where lives the one d if the The legend was usually discounte beetle flew the wrong way…

It’s a jungle out there Just creepy crawlies? Sometimes there’s more to garden insects than meets the eyes... If your children are bored in the back yard why not prove to them that it’s full of fascinating creatures? As the weather warms most of these common insects may be seen in action in your garden.

Leaf-cutter bees Are little circular sections cut out of the leaves of your roses? Nothing is eating them – it’s the nest building activities of the leaf-cutter bee that’s to blame. It lives a solitary life but, after mating. it nests in holes in dead wood, plant stems, even bamboo canes. It seals in and protects its eggs with circular sections of leaf glued with saliva. These hatch inside, and hibernate through the winter, appearing in April as bees. Look out for their orange bellies and their sealed-off homes.

Froghopper What’s that foam tucked into a leaf bud on your plants? It’s the home of a froghopper larva. Froghoppers are dull brown insects which lay their eggs on the plant. The eggs hatch and the larva bubble a home of ‘cuckoo spit’ from their bottoms as they feed on young leaves. This hides and protects them and even offers some temperature control.

Lacewings These seem to be the fairies of the garden with transparent meshed wings, golden eyes and almost fluorescent green bodies. In fact they are the vampires… They seem too delicate to harm anything yet they feed on aphids, sucking the little greenflies dry and may even build shelters from their desiccated bodies.

Spring fling

Cuckoos arrive at the sam e time as the froghopper’s foa my homes appear – hence the nam e.

Ladybird Ladybird, Ladybird, fly away home. But look closely before it does and you may see that their red wing case usually carries either two spots or seven (or sometimes a different pattern, as there are 40 species). Ladybirds are beetles and the bright colour is a warning – they apparently taste nasty, can squirt a foul liquid at you and have even been known to give you a nip. Not quite the friendly little creature they’re portrayed as. You’ll often find ladybirds overwintering in your house. They seem to like to hide in curtains. They also eat greenfly and even in mediaeval times they were respected for eating crop pests.

Bee hotel

Encourage your children to set up their own leaf-cutter bee hot el. If they take short lengths of bamboo (say 10cm long and 1cm diameter), tie them together in bunches and fix them on the shed wall they will find that the bees use them to nest and little leaf seals appear over the ends.

Do you want to be a TA?

Riverside Training is a specialist childcare training company, with over 20 years’ experience of delivering qualifications to many employees including childcare workers, teaching assistants, administration staff and managers in the workplace. Term Times meets Robynne, who tells us how her career changed through the help and training that Riverside offers.

Tell us about yourself? I am Robynne Hayes, 41 years old and married with two children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I have dyslexia and dyspraxia, which I have used to my advantage in my employment.

What did you do before a career in education?

Robynne Hayes WANT TO KNOW MORE? See our advert on page 2 for more details!

I studied horticulture in York for 3 years and worked in nurseries and garden centres as a self-employed gardener. I was also a registered childminder for many years.

Why the change? I moved to education for a job due to my boys’ needs and my husband’s job as a farm manager. I found I had a wealth of knowledge and experience gained through my school life, raising two very unique boys with special needs and through dealing with many different specialists over the years.

What were the first training steps you took?

What do you do now?

When we moved to Spalding I considered doing my Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification as most jobs wanted that level of qualification plus maths, English and information and communications technology (ICT). I evaluated many colleges and training bodies for the best part of six months while unemployed.

I work as a one-to-one Teaching Assistant within Spalding Primary, working with a young man who has special needs, but also with the other children within the class who need help or a boost. I support class teacher and my fellow staff member within the school, part of an excellent team working for the best for both children at the school and the parents.

How did Riverside help you?

The future?

Riverside were brilliant. They gave me the flexibility to look at different courses and costs, Time-scales and how long I would have to work at an education establishment. They advised me about finding a work placement and even offered to set me up in some of the establishments that they had worked with before. I had written a number of letters to local schools enquiring as to whether they would take me on at this point and, luckily, Spalding Primary engaged me as an apprentice so I could do my level 3 through the apprenticeship programme as I could not afford to pay for it myself.

As I would like to carry on working at schools, I have now commenced a further course with Riverside, training to specialise in working with children with additional needs. Then I would like to consider working for the county council with parents who have special needs children, especially in the first five years when things can be very uncertain and frustrating.

Farmers open their gates Let’s all celebrate British food and farming on Sunday, June 8th. That’s when you can visit free of charge one of hundreds of farms across the country opening their gates for ‘Open Farm Sunday’, the only day in the year when farmers and producers across Britain unite to open to the public. Our farmers produce more than half of all food consumed in Britain, from fresh foods like milk, cheese, meat, fruit and vegetables, to store cupboard staples such as breakfast cereals, flour, rapeseed oil and eggs. Add to that the vital work farmers do to manage the countryside. Organised by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), ‘Open Farm Sunday’ is your chance to meet farmers and find out for yourself how your food is produced and what it takes to look after the countryside. ‘Open Farm Sunday’ offers an informative and enjoyable day out for everyone, young and old alike. Each farm plans their own unique event and many will include a host of activities from nature walks and farm tours, to sheep shearing, machinery displays and even cookery demonstrations. You can search for participating farms near you and find out information on their event by visiting www.farmsunday.org. Since 2006, ‘Open Farm Sunday’ has attracted a million visitors. the ‘Open Farm Sunday’ conversation on Twitter by using @openfarmsunday or #OFS in all your tweets. HELPING HANDS

Top tips to help...

Reluctant readers While some children learn to read effortlessly and love every step of the journey, others find it more of an uphill climb, needing extra encouragement and support along the way. Here are a few tips to help reluctant readers:

Liz Walker, Founder of Reading Chest

11 Most importantly, make sure you are in a good routine of reading regularly. This might sound obvious, but once a routine is established, then children are much less likely to protest. Reading for 10 minutes every day after breakfast will become just as normal as brushing teeth. 22 Make the most of the reading opportunities in the world around you. Reluctant readers may prefer reading about a competition on a cereal box during breakfast, rather than getting a book out of their school bag. Other good reading opportunities are menus, instructions and blurbs on DVD covers. 33 Car journeys can be filled with reading activities, such as number plate games to help with phonics for early readers. For example, say silly sentences based on the letters in a number plate such as CYT - ‘catch your tomato’ to think about initial sounds. Look for signs and place names with different phonics sounds in them such as ‘ey’ ending words. Playing audio books is a fantastic way to listen to longer stories and keep children engaged.

share your

44 Read and act out a play. There are some great plays included in reading schemes now such as Bug Club which can be read and acted out with parents or other children. Otherwise, get children to write their own! 55 Read more as a parent. Many of us will only read for a few minutes in bed before nodding off to sleep. Perhaps your children never see you reading a book. Try having a TV-free evening once a week where reading becomes the family activity. 66 If your children spend time on apps, then make sure you have a few reading apps downloaded. Collins Big Cat have some brilliant free story apps (http:// www.collins.co.uk/page/Collins+Big+Cat/Apps). Nosy Crow is another great publisher of story apps (http:// nosycrow.com/apps). The ultimate challenge for reluctant readers is getting them to read for their own pleasure rather than to please their parents or teacher. It is up to us to not only help children to develop the skills to read, but also more importantly the desire to want to do it. The best way in which we can do this is to ensure that it has a strong presence in their lives and that they have access to enough inspiring content to keep them interested, engaged and entertained.

A MARKS & SPENCER VOUCHER

Winner from last issue Best suggestion received for homework (Easter issue) advice from Term Times reader Fiona Ruiter. Fiona wins a £25 Marks & Spencer voucher.

When it comes to maths, I teach my children throughout general day to day life whereever they are. So, I would encourage earning pennies for things like manners, respect, kindness, helpfulness and the like. Then they get to count up their own money to spend in shops on things they would like although they still need to save enough for items they really want. I also find posters are great to put up and have a chair with pointer stick, teddy bear, chalkboard and classroom things, making a room in their home a bit similar to school. They tend to love role-playing school. Sometimes I use random games like ‘I spell with my little mouth’ or provide a small part of a shopping list for my daughters to shop with me. Placing workbooks or other learning resources on the living room table and changing them about once a week also encourages the children to go to them of own accord and learn a little more. Reading seems to work better as soon as they come home from school and say with excitement, “I have got a new book!” Then you should immediately stop what you are doing to listen to them read. 18

Fast approaching is the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the country associated most with skilful, entertaining football. You can almost hear the carnival music in the distance.

Children across the world will once again be inspired to strive to become great footballers like their sporting heroes such as Messi, Ronaldo, Robin van Persie, Gerrard and Casillas.

Wherever they finish up, these exceptional players all started at entry level football in grass-roots clubs. Grassroots clubs are the first step in a superstar’s career but are equally crucial in providing football for all young people who just want to enjoy playing the game they love with their friends.

Children who love to play football in the school playground, in after-school clubs and school teams are not always aware of the many opportunities to play for local clubs. If you are a child, parent, grandparent inspired by the World Cup, clubs will be looking for new players and volunteers for the 2014-15 season.

Term Times magazine catches up with Peterborough United’s hot-shot striker Britt Assombalonga. With over 30 goals netted by mid April, we learn about Britt , his school days and much more... Which Primary School did you attend?

What other sports did you play at school?

BA: ‘I went to St Mary’s Primary School in London. I don’t remember much from Primary School, but I certainly enjoyed it.

BA: ‘Handball, but it basically involved throwing a tennis ball at a wall.’

‘Did you have a favourite subject at school?

At primary school, what did you want to be when you grew up?

BA: ‘It has to be maths. I loved doing numbers. I just enjoyed it. Those difficult situations were challenging and I loved that.’

BA: ‘I didn’t think that far ahead. I wanted to live life and play with my friends.’

Packed lunch or hot school dinners? BA: ‘Hot school dinners.’

Star Wars or Star Trek?

BA: ‘We didn’t actually have a school football team. I played during lunch time, but there was no actual team.’

Who, out of the Posh team, would be sent to the headmaster’s office?

Finally, who is your tip for this year’s World Cup?

BA: ‘That is a good question. Probably Kgosi Ntlhe. He talks too much. ‘

BA: ‘I would say Germany. Germany or Brazil. It will be between one of those two.’

Were you in the school football team?

BA: ‘Neither of them to be honest.’

What advice would you give to primary school children who want to grow up to be a footballer? BA: ‘They are still young, just focus on school. They have a lot ahead of them. They need to concentrate on school until you reach the age of making your own choices. What do others have to say about the competition? Favourite World Cup player? ‘Lionel Messi. I am a great believer in developing children’s’ football skills through Futsal and Messi is a living proof of that. Young England starlet to shine in Brazil? ‘Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be able to shine in Brazil. He is already a player with a great deal of flair that flourishes on big occasions. What are the signs of meningitis? The first thing to look for is a rash that does not disappear when you apply the glass test. RIGHT? WRONG. The rash that might appear is not meningitis at all but one of the signs of septicaemia. By Deborah Slater Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. It is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection.

The spots/blotches do not fade when pressed (unlike many other rashes). To check for this do the glass test. Place a clear glass firmly on one of the spots or blotches. If the spot/blotch does not fade and you can still see it through the glass, get medical help immediately.

Burghley House Home to William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer and Chief Minister to Queen Elizabeth I, Burghley is a true treasure house and this year is open for visitors until Sunday, 2nd November. A family favourite since opening in 2007, the Historical Garden of Surprises is perfect for a day out with the children and for readers of Term Times we are happy to offer a 2014 Gardens of Surprise Season Card to 1 lucky competition winner. Family day admission tickets and a new Gruesomely Grubby Gardens Guide to the Gardens will be awarded to 2 lucky runners up. The amazing contents of the Garden of Surprises, inspired by William Cecil’s original Elizabethan ‘trick’ garden at his Hertfordshire home Theobald’s, are hidden from the outside waiting to reveal their surprises to those who enter. Features such as the moss house, swivelling Caesar busts, basins of water, jets and a mirrored maze have been designed to be accessible to all regardless of age or interest, and are particularly enjoyable for the young and young at heart who enjoy a paddle on a warm day.

Alongside the Garden of Surprises is the Sculpture Garden. On entering the Sculpture Garden visitors are welcomed by a mixed array of trees and shrubs which form a major structural element within the gardens, creating archways and external rooms where discreetly hidden contemporary sculptures can be found. This year’s sculpture exhibition is ‘Elemental’ which includes a wind sock, delicate shimmering kinetic sculptures that appear and disappear on the breeze and a photographic installation that uses sunlight to reveal the moon at Burghley. Other elemental sculptures on show display pure geometry with contemporary monoliths such as Mark Beattie’s spherical ball and Julian Wild’s knotted Ugli Fruit. Following the bark and mown pathways around the Sculpture Garden you pass many different species of trees, which was once ‘Capability’ Brown’s

arboretum, along with additional seasonal exhibitions of contemporary sculpture, making the perfect surroundings for a relaxing stroll or family picnic. The Garden Café sell delicious homemade cakes, biscuits and light lunches and the Garden Shop will tempt you to buy a treat for your own garden… or for the children.
