Welcome...

I’m sure I am not the only person who has vivid memories of their childhood summers. In fact, in my memory, during my childhood, it was either sunny or snowing, with the occasional dramatic thunderstorm thrown in for good measure! I think this is primarily down to the wonderful six weeks of freedom that stretched out ahead, ready to be filled with a variety of possible adventures.

Now we, as parents, are in the position of tour guide rather than intrepid explorer. Here at Term Times we have worked hard to make sure the new summer edition will form part of your essential toolkit for what to do in the local area… before we have to think about measuring up for the next set of school shoes!

For us this summer is the end of an era as our younger child is preparing to start school in September. It seems like only moments ago that he was a little baby and now we are looking at the last summer holiday before he gets into the routine that will last him for the next 14 years.

It’s an exciting time for him, and his future classmates, but I’m sure I’m not the only parent with mixed emotions at this time.

In this issue we have tried out a fabulous initiative being run by Leicestershire Tourism which gives you access to all of their biggest and brightest attractions. We have our usual great mix of competitions where you could win a family ticket to the Raptor Foundation, one of two family tickets to Wicksteed Park... or, should we enjoy a typical Great British summer, you could win one of three sets of Puffin books for schools or a Reading Chest membership valid for a year.

Whatever you are planning on doing, we wish you a fabulous summer.

Free Family Fun at Redwings Horse Sanctuary

Stuck for things to do with the children this holiday? Look no further. Redwings Horse Sanctuary offers both an exciting and educational day out for the whole family.

Redwings cares for over 1300 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. They rescue malnourished, neglected and abandoned equines from all over the country, and offer them a home in the sanctuary for the rest of their lives, or find them a loving Guardian home.

Huge puzzle of fun!

Skylark Maize Maze needs you for an a-Maze-ing family day out. The giant maize maze is a huge puzzle of fun, one of the biggest mazes in the country!

Skylark this year is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War. Navigate your way through the maze, find the clues and discover a giant poppy made from poppies - an amazing sight. In the Funyard play area, children can meet the farm animals, watch pig racing and delight at the attractions including pedal-go karts, obstacle course, giant inflatable slides, zip wire and more.

New for 2014 is the Pesky Pigeons Tractor Trailer Ride 2 - the pigeons squirt back. Expect to get a bit wet on this ride!

Redwings’ four visitor centres offer the public the chance to see some of the work that goes on behind the scenes and offers an exciting opportunity to meet and cuddle some of their four-legged friends. Visitors can meet various adoption stars, such as the beautiful Victoria, Wensley the wiley Shetland and Del Boy the daring donkey. With guided tours, meet and greets, a café, gift shop and play area there is plenty to keep everybody amused. The children can also join the Young Redwings Club, which is completely free and will provide them with updates about everything going on at the sanctuary.

There is a BBQ grill and a delightful cafe which has been recognised by the Guild of Food Writers as a “special place to stop for a super snack.” Skylark also offers retail therapy on site with its large Garden Centre.

Come along to learn how we care for rescued horses and to learn more about the Five Freedoms - five rules for looking after any pet.

Summer in Ferry Meadows Long summer days are perfect for visiting Ferry Meadows in Nene Park, Peterborough. Explore the lakes, meadows and woodlands or just relax with a picnic or a BBQ. If you are looking for activity, why not try water sports, boat trips, train rides, cycling or orienteering to name a few? Throughout the summer there will be a fun packed events programme including “Marvellous Mondays” which will be series of craft activities during the school holidays.

How children can fulfil their passion for horse riding...

Horsemanship not only stimulates children physically, it develops selfconfidence, coordination, balance, awareness of surroundings and discipline. If horse riding is something any parent is considering for their children, doing some research beforehand is vital. While horse riding as a hobby can be expensive, it can prove very rewarding.

Find a suitable riding school near to your home by searching on the British Horse Society website. British Horse Society standard means the establishment holds the highest standards of safety, tuition and welfare for horses and ponies. From the search, visit all of the riding schools you are interested in with your child. Check the yard is well maintained and machinery and tools are kept in safe places; see if the ponies are happy and kept in good condition; and speak with staff and the tutor who may be your child’s instructor. Look at the services on offer at the stables. Some places offer only riding lessons, other places offer ‘the Pony Club’ a national body that your child can be a part of. In the Club your child learns about horsemanship. Pony Club membership allows attendance at regular shows, competitions and gymkhanas.

My advice would be for your child to have a go first before committing fully to the hobby. Even better still, why don’t parents also have a go! What could be more fun than parent and child embarking on the new adventure together? Prior to committing to the hobby, good riding schools will usually have the protective equipment available to borrow or loan for a very small fee which can be included in the price of your lesson. Once committed, you

will need a hat, riding gloves, jodhpurs, riding boots, body protector, t-shirt and jumper. As there are lots of children who outgrow their clothes and equipment, you can usually find second-hand items on the internet or on sale at your local stables.

During your initial lessons you will learn how to mount, dismount and sit correctly on the horse and how to use the bridle reins. Once these have been mastered, your child will learn how to use ‘Natural Aids’ - hands, legs, voice and body - to communicate with the horse/pony to instruct them on how you want them to move forward.

Next step is to master the Walk, Trot, Canter and Gallop. However, canter and gallop are transitions that are only taught when the instructor feels the time is right. Instructors always put safety first and take into consideration the ability of the rider and how their learning is progressing. I would recommend speaking with the instructor to identify what games can be done during the lessons to help your child’s learning.

The cost of each lesson varies between establishments. Lessons start from £15 upwards, ranging from private 30-minute riding lessons to an hour and a half of combined riding and theory, 45-minute riding lesson and 45-minute theory where your child can learn how to groom, tack up and understand stable management.

Stand by to watch your child’s development and enthusiasm for an amazing outdoor activity and love of horses take off!

Give your child a healthy start in life Health experts recommend that children do at least 60 minutes of activity every day. But, in reality, only 20 per cent of girls and 25 per cent of boys achieve this on a regular basis.

In Peterborough, there’s a big push underway to get more children and young people active, whether it’s spending increased time in the garden playing football or getting involved in after-school clubs.

The school summer holidays are a great time to get active and it doesn’t need to cost money. Why not visit one of the many parks and open spaces in Peterborough? Or you could make use of the city’s Green Wheel cycle route - you could choose a small section or if you’re feeling fit you could attempt the full 54 miles!

Peterborough City Council is running a week-long summer holiday activity club at Stanground Sports Centre to help children and young people who would benefit from losing a little weight.

The club is completely free of charge and gives children and young people the chance to get active whilst making new friends and having fun. Parents must register their children in advance by calling 01733 207185 as places are limited.

The city council also runs a Youth Health Champion programme which involves young people aged 16 to 24 working with other young people to help them develop healthier, more active lifestyles.

The champions organise events and activities, and provide advice on topics such as sexual health, smoking, healthy eating habits and physical exercise.

HELP YOUR CHILD LOOK AND FEEL GREAT THIS SUMMER

Nationally there is a drive to increase the amount of physical activity undertaken by children and young people. The Change4Life programme allows families to access information which will help them to improve their overall health by eating better and increasing their exercise.

This year Change4Life has teamed up with Disney to encourage children to have fun and move more. Together they have created the 10 Minute Shake Up - an initiative that uses Disney’s great stories and fantastic characters to encourage and inspire children to stay active over the summer break.

Families who visit www.nhs.uk/Change4Life and sign up will get a free 10 Minute Shake Up pack that includes a stopwatch, activity cards, wall chart and stickers as well as lots of online Disney content. The website also offers more information about up and coming events and activities, plus top tips, like how to save money on food shopping while also ensuring you are eating your five-a-day.

The Kumon Maths Programme aims for students to study advanced-level maths. We place great importance on children understanding how a calculation works and therefore their ability to select the most efficient approach to solve a problem.

Mental calculation is vital to ensure a full understanding of the mathematical basics. In order to develop these skills, repetition of number sequencing is key. Fully grasping addition before introducing subtraction will further build these number bonds, both orally and in writing.

Gaining a full understanding of times tables is important; it will help speed up all later forms of mental calculations. There is no other way around this, they need to be practiced orally every day until they have been memorised. We would recommend saying the calculation in full, i.e. one times two is two, two times two is four, rather than two, four, six, eight, etc.

We would also suggest focussing on division before moving on to fractions, gaining a full understanding

of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division is important to fully grasp fractions and to ease the journey into this area of mathematics.

Each level of the Kumon Maths Programme progresses incrementally on the one before, ensuring a full understanding and the ability to put learning into practice. Through daily study of this worksheet-based programme, students develop an affinity for mental maths and the confidence to apply a range of skills when faced with a new challenge.

Four go in Leicestershire

By Amanda Stacey and team Saturday 8:55am – We set off from the wilds of South Lincolnshire on our latest family adventure. One Family, one car, 1,500 bags. Dad driving, Mum navigating and kids somewhere in the back under the weight of the varied toys, games and snacks that were apparently indispensable to our trip.

9:23am –Well on the way, with our tour operator having given us a ten minute lecture on the features of our first stop: Snibston Discovery Museum (note to self, keep the leaflets in the front of the car from here on in).

10:10am – We have arrived at Snibston and not knowing quite what to expect we are pleasantly surprised by the amount of really interesting exhibits on display. Snibston has something for all the family from a wide range of interactive fun including using magnets to lift a Mini and a mineshaft for the kids to explore. There are talks around the old Colliery buildings led by the men who used to work there, some beautifully maintained vehicles showing the area’s industrial heritage and a large outdoor play area complete with water park demonstrating how canal locks and water wheels work…although I think the educational value may have been lost on the two younger members of our team, surpassed by the pure joy of getting Dad wet. This is not to say that Snibston is a traditional science and technology museum, there is a toy gallery displaying a number of nostalgic toys that were developed in the area, most famously the Action Man, which made Dad a bit misty eyed. There is a great fashion gallery displaying some good examples of fashion through the ages and Snibston is currently the home of local artist, Shauna Richardson’s massive Lionheart Project, which formed part of the cultural Olympiad during the summer of 2012.

12.15pm Lunch – After an action-packed couple of hours we were delighted to find that Snibston has both indoor and outdoor picnic facilities of which we were able to make full use.

Twycross Cuddles

1:30pm – 25 minutes after leaving Snibston we arrive at Twycross with full tums and ready to begin the second leg of our adventure. Twycross is one of the best known zoos in the country and is currently celebrating 50 years since it first opened. Our two, like many kids, are animal-mad and the World Primate Centre has a host of them to keep everyone amused. On arrival we walk into the impressive Himalaya lobby which not only has a collection of great eateries and a well-stocked gift shop, but has recently added a multistorey soft play area and has the best viewing for the fabulous snow leopard enclosure. Recently, Twycross has enjoyed a veritable stork-fest with a large number of babies being born at the zoo meaning that we had an afternoon of cuteness waiting for us. With this in mind, our first stop must be the Elephant enclosure to see the herd of four female Asian elephants, who were joined in March by an adorable new addition. We were lucky that the elephants really put on a show for us, coming to pluck fruit from the nearby bank and trying to break into the lake area! We then moved onto have a look at the massive variety of primates housed at Twycross. The gibbons put on a great show. The walking with Lemurs attraction gave us a chance to get really close to these characterful little creatures, especially as one tried to make his escape! This year Twycross is undergoing lots of exciting changes, many of which we were able to experience. In particular, the kids loved the Butterfly Forest and the new Zebra home looks like it will be an impressive addition.

Once outside we were able to get on the train for a ride to the beautiful and tranquil waterside zone of the park where we could sit on the waterfront overlooking the lake. A hop back on the train, after bonding with the duck over sandwich crusts, and we were back in the centre of the Discovery Zone where there are lots of things to do. Our two were a little too young for the assault course, which looked amazing, but we had fun in the Fairy labyrinth and the kids thought Mummy doing the barefoot walk was great fun (note someone else had to ‘hold the camera!’, Grrr). All in all, Conkers is a great attraction at which you could spend lots of time. All of the exhibits were interesting and fun and there are other things, like “Pond dipping” that you can book on the day.

So that’s it! The end of a truly memorable weekend virtually on our doorstep.

We’ve had a great time and would highly recommend the ”Stay Play Explore” mission. Now time to get home and stick the washing on!

Due to the great deal in the Stay Play and Explore Family Fun Package, we were not now faced with a long drive home but instead just a short hop to our hotel of choice; the four-star Hinckley Island Hotel. The hotel proved to be a great base for our weekend and was a lovely way to round off our long Saturday. The family room was an excellent size, the swimming pool and gym a great addition and the kids were given a free activity pack upon arrival that kept them quiet. The hotel has a lovely brasserie restaurant and two bars serving food in a slightly more relaxed atmosphere.

We decided to have dinner in the Triumph bar (nothing to do with a football match that was on the wide screen televisions in the bar) to the great delight of Harry as it was decorated with various motorcycle parts. Both the food and the service were excellent and we all went to bed that night with full tums and tired heads!

Sunday 8:00am – Dad ventures out to take advantage of the gym facilities, whilst the rest of us still slumber (who am I kidding, the kids have been up since 6:30, desperate to get going).

9:00am – All present and correct, we go down for breakfast, which is a veritable feast. Twenty minutes later, when my fingernails were finally removed from the pastry bar, we are ready to get going. After a tense amount of debate and deliberation, the family decide that our third attraction will be Conkers. Conkers is a great attraction in the middle of the National Forest that combines lots of fun interactive exhibits inside with big green spaces and lots to explore.

Only twenty minutes from the hotel, we arrive. One of the best things about Conkers is that it’s a great day out, whatever the weather, whatever the age of the children. The amount of interesting attractions inside kept us busy for a good hour and to be fair, with two children of reading age we could have spent longer in there. We had to haul Harry out of the Enchanted Forest Adventure Play area and Emilia wanted to work for ages at some

Sugary Loveliness Take a bit of time to make one of the foodie trends of the season. Marshmallows are surprisingly easy and once the basic recipe is mastered the sky’s the limit when it comes to new flavours.

Our current favourites are marbling a raspberry syrup at stage 8, using lemon juice in the gelatine mix or coating in chopped pistachios at the end.

Obviously, boiling sugar means you must take the utmost care when creating these marshmallows. In our house it’s only the gelatine stages at the beginning and any flavouring at the end that require the help of little hands! (Adapted from a recipe from www.rivercottage.net). This recipe should produce 50-60 little clouds of sugary loveliness.

Vegetable oil for oiling cake tray and scissors Gelatine powder, 25g 2 Free-range egg whites, Granulated sugar 500g

Equipment :

• Sieve, • 2 small bo wls, • 20cm squa re cake tin, th e silicone ones work really well • measuring jug, • wooden sp oon, • free-stand ing food mixer , • medium he avy-based sauc epan, • sugar ther mometer • jug, • chopping board, • Scissors.

1. Sift the sugar and cornflour together into a bowl. Rub the tray lightly with just a few drops of oil and shake a little of the icing sugar mix around the tin to coat the base and sides.

2. Bring the kettle almost to the boil, then measure out 125ml water. Pour it into the second bowl and sprinkle the gelatine on top. Stir with the wooden spoon until the gelatine has all dissolved. Leave the mix to stand near the hob.

TAS T Y TREA TS 3. Put the egg whites into the mixer bowl.

4. Put the granulated sugar in to the medium saucepan and add 250ml water. Place over a low heat and stir with a wooden spoon until the sugar has completely dissolved and you can’t see any grains left. At this point you should stop stirring. Warm the sugar thermometer under hot water for a few seconds so it is prepared, then stand it in the pan. Raise the heat so the syrup comes to the boil.

At the same time switch on the food mixer and whisk the egg whites until they’re stiff. Put some hot water in a jug and have it near the hob.

5. The sugar needs to boil fiercely until it gets to the hard-ball stage (122C). Once the sugar reaches 122C, switch off the hob. Using oven gloves to protect your fingers take out the sugar thermometer and pop it in the jug of water to cool down.

6. Pour the gelatine mix into the pan of syrup, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon. The syrup will bubble up a little, although not too much. Stir until it is well blended.

7. Switch the food mixer on low so that the egg whites carry on whisking. Very carefully pour the syrup on to the beating egg whites in a slow stream – be careful not to pour it on to the beaters or it will splash. The mixture will turn creamy. After you’ve poured in all the syrup, leave the machine to carry on beating until the mixture turns really thick and bulky but is still pourable, be aware this can take around 10 minutes, make a cup of tea!. When you lift up the beaters, a ribbon of marshmallow should remain on the surface for a few seconds before sinking back down in to the mix.

8. Pour the marshmallow into the prepared tray. Leave it to set in a cool place, though not the fridge - this will probably take an hour or two. You won’t want to wait that long, obviously, but try and be patient.

9. Dust the chopping board with the rest of the cornflour and icing sugar mixture. Coat the scissors in a little oil. Carefully ease the marshmallow out of the tray on to the board. Dust all of the surfaces of the marshmallow with the icing sugar mixture. Cut the marshmallow into squares, oiling and dusting the scissors as required (probably between every cut).

Marvel at these birds of prey There’s plenty to do during the school holidays at the Raptor Foundation in Woodhurst near St Ives, Cambridgeshire.

The Raptor Foundation - originally known as Ramsey Raptor Rescue - was established in 1989. Over the next five years, it grew rapidly and soon housed over 100 birds of prey. When it was decided it was time to move, a new site was found not far from St Ives in 1996.

This venture started with a single bird called Boris, a young disabled Tawny Owl. Numbers of injured birds arriving at their door grew over the coming years and some of them are still there today including good old Boris.

The Foundation still continues to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome injured wild birds and unwanted pets. It currently houses over 200 birds of prey comprising over 40 different species - from a Little Owl to a 40-year-old Golden Eagle.

Open to the public, you can get up close and even fly some of the birds in one of three daily flying displays at 12pm, 2pm & 4pm. Enjoy lunch in the Silent Wings tearoom, browse around the ‘Mad about

Wicksteed Park, Kettering, has unveiled a wide range of new attractions for 2014 to mark the completion of the £2million project to restore its lake to former glories

Learn about a variety of species from trained staff and see these magnificent creatures in action. Over 200 different birds of prey will greet you for what is an interesting, educational and fun day.

It was formerly opened in 1921 by founder Charles Wicksteed as part of his vision to inspire and encourage play as part of families’ health and well-being.

The project, which has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund along with Northamptonshire County Council and Kettering Borough Council, has brought back to life one of the most popular parts of the park.

New developments including a paddling area for toddlers, a beach and a 90m pontoon. Elsewhere in the park, other new features include a Bah Humbug hand-made retro sweet shop, Waxhands hand modelling and a refurbished Ideas Café.

Older teenagers and adults can also enjoy the new RUSH zip wire (height and weight restrictions apply), which is the height of a six storey building and more than 300m long. It is part of an activity tower which also features a ‘Leap of Faith’ and a climbing wall.

The lake restoration also includes the conservation of the redundant roundhouse, a 1924 lakeside shelter, which has been repaired, bringing it back into use as a focus for lakeside activities.

A large ampitheatre, new pathways providing access around the entire lake for the first time and an arboretum have also been created.
