www.termtimes.ltd.uk Easter edition

Welcome . . . Welcome to the Easter edition of Term Times magazine. Since becoming a Mum, I have become increasingly fond of this season as, to me, it feels like we are definitely able to get out and about more. It always seems like the right time to get the bikes and scooters from the shed to spend longer outside. Obviously, by writing this, I may have just sentenced us all to the wettest Easter on record - but I’m prepared to take the risk! Both of my two are definitely ready to get back into the garden and it hasn’t been unheard of for us to plan an Easter barbeque or picnic… although I must admit sometimes they are consumed in the kitchen or car respectively. Easter is synonymous with the re-awakening of the good old British spirit of undented optimism when it comes to our outdoor adventures. With that in mind, this issue’s competitions are entirely tailored to get the most reluctant of our readers into the fresh air! We have a great trip for a whole school class to visit Hamerton Zoo to witness the new tigers first-hand; there is a family ticket to Grafham Water up for grabs; a Rutland cycling voucher for a family cycle ride; and tickets to the Countryside Lincs event. No need to be stuck for things to do - from Truckfest to Shakespeare at Tolethorpe, we have it covered. On an exciting note for us all here in Term Times house, we are delighted to announce the launch of the first Term Times Education Awards, in partnership with Mana Education. As we work so closely with our fabulous primary schools, we wanted you to have the opportunity to praise your teachers and support staff for the wonderful work they do. Information on how to make nominations is on pages 12 and 13. We can’t wait to hear about the brilliant and inspiring work being done in the local area for our children.

NEWS Moor Farm’s lambs are coming!

Nene Outdoors re-opens under new management Following a temporary closure at the end of 2015, the Nene Outdoors Watersports and Activity Centre reopened at the beginning of March under the management of Nene Park Trust. Situated on Gunwade Lake in Ferry Meadows next to the Lakeside Kitchen & Bar and the Rutland Cycling Hire Shop, the watersports currently on offer at Nene Outdoors include: • Sailing • Windsurfing • Kayaking • Canoeing • Raft building • Pedalo football • Paddle boarding In taking over management of the centre, the Trust hopes to build on the core watersports offered and link this with its existing outdoor education, forest schools and events and activities programme. Anna Thompson, Outdoor Education and Activities Manager at Nene Park Trust commented: “We are really excited about the opportunity to develop Nene Outdoors as a hub for outdoor activities in the region. The centre is already a great place to enjoy watersports and as we look to the future we aim to develop a great range of land based activities to add to our offering.” To celebrate the reopening of the centre, Nene Outdoors will be holding a Family Fun Day on Sunday 22 May. Jayne Torvill wants more adopters Ice skating champion Jayne Torvill OBE is helping Adopt Together spread the important message of adoption through local TV and radio advertisements. Jayne said:'I had exactly the same fears when I was considering adoption. But for my husband and I, it was the best decision we ever made.' Children aged four and over, siblings, children with minority ethnic backgrounds and those with disabilities tend to wait longer for the loving, forever home they deserve. Could you offer the stable, secure and loving family life that these children dream of? The ewes at Moor Farm, Decoy Road, Newborough, near Peterborough, have been scanned and the results are very promising for this year’s crop of lambs with 17 singles, 71 sets of twins and 19 sets of triplets expected. Lambing should therefore start on 24 March, just in time for the Farm’s lambing open day on Easter Saturday. There will be a few new-born calves too as there are some late calvers. Moor Farm’s new Blonde d’Aquitaine bull, Eagle, has produced some fabulous calves this year. Come and see what you think! Ronnie and Rita, the Barn Owl couple, may well be on view on the CCTV cameras in the shop as they get ready to lay their eggs for the new season. For the second time, you are invited to the farm on Easter Saturday, 26 March, between 2 and 4 pm, to see for yourself what life is like in the maternity ward of a sheep farm in Peterborough. All the proceeds from the day are going towards buying new doors for St Bartholomew’s Church in Newborough to try to keep out the draught! Your £5 family ticket will include tea and hot cross buns after your guided visit to the lambing pens. Wear wellies and protective clothing although there are some you can borrow. There may be an opportunity to sit on a tractor too. To book a place, contact Moor Farm on 01733 810 229 www.moorfarmshop.com

Easter invite to Peterborough Cathedral Families with children of all ages are invited to drop in to Peterborough Cathedral during the Easter holidays to discover the Easter story and have fun making some colourful crafts to take home. The trail and craft activities will be offered between 11.30am and 3.00pm on Monday 4, Tuesday 5, Thursday 7 and Friday 8 April. There will be a route around the Cathedral with various stopping points, including the Cloisters, where there will be prompts for something to look at or think about to help understand the Easter story. There will also be something to collect so that you can make your own wristband or necklace to take away. The trail will end in the beautiful New Building where there will be lots of colourful Easter-related things to make, including a mini stained glass window, an Easter garden and a decorated Easter-egg candle. Alex Carton, Schools and Families Officer at the Cathedral, said: 'This is a great opportunity for families to explore the Cathedral and the Easter story during the holidays.' PETERBOROUGH

Children can only aspire to what they know exists Children’s University is a critically acclaimed international extra-curricular learning programme. We encourage 5-14 year olds to try new experiences, develop new interests and acquire new skills. Children’s University believes that children benefit most when they decide for themselves what, when, where, why and how they learn.

What can children do through Children’s University? We work within local communities to encourage all children, but particularly those who need it most, to participate in a range of challenging and fun learning activities, delivered by accredited learning partners called learning destinations: museums, sports venues, universities, community partners, after school clubs and many more.

Why do schools get involved in Children’s University? Children’s University is a way to build the curriculum ‘from the inside out’, celebrating achievement and effort wherever they happen beyond the school day. Each completed Learning Activity earns a credit in a child’s Passport To Learning, leading to certificates awarded at a Children’s University graduation ceremony, neatly modelled on the ‘grown-up’ version.

Where is Children’s University available? Across the UK, Children’s University operates with 90 centres, stretching from Aberdeen to Cornwall. Each local centre enables member schools to offer our programme to all children who want to take part, as well as targeting those who would benefit most. Children’s University aims to raise aspirations, build resilience and, above all, encourage curiosity and a love of learning.

What head teachers say about Children’s University ... “Children’s University is the spark that awakens our children to the possibility of achieving great things.” Richard Machin, Finham Primary School

he discovers he has to commit ever more murderous deeds to keep himself in power. The Tempest Tolethorpe's beautiful gladed stage is the perfect setting for what was possibly Shakespeare's last play and gives us a dramatist at the height of his creative and poetic power- a magical mystical tale of a remote island, of shipwrecks and lost kingdom, of spirits and monsters, of true love and revenge, of conspirators and clowns. For something different, the third production for 2016 at the Open Air Theatre is: The Wind in the Willows This stage adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's classic novel captures vividly the idyllic world of the river bank and the distant wild wood where wily weasels lie in wait. Nautical Ratty, modest Mole and wise old Badger are determined to save the irrepressible Mr Toad from his relentless passion for fast motor cars. A timeless, enchanting story set in Edwardian England.

SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENTS Wisbech Grammar School is holding a Sixth Form Open Evening for 2016 and 2017 entry from 6-8pm on

Wednesday 16 March Wisbech Grammar School, founded in 1379, is an Independent HMC Coeducational Day School for pupils aged 4-18 located on a 34 acre site on the historic North Brink in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. The School’s Sixth Form epitomises all of the unique strengths of education at Wisbech Grammar School: academic excellence at its heart in tandem with a wide range of extra-curricular activities for a truly all-round education.

An all-round education that inspires…

T

he Sixth Form encourages pupils to take on roles of responsibility and leadership, experience increased independence and contribute to the wider community. This unique combination equips them with the knowledge and experience needed to achieve success as they enter Higher Education. Sixth Form pupils are based in the Hazel Centre, a dedicated Sixth Form facility, which provides pupils with the space and facilities needed for study, recreation and social events.

With more independence, guidance is provided to ensure pupils are successful in their studies. In addition to Personal Development, General and Life Studies lessons, visiting speakers and trips are regularly arranged to enrich the curriculum offered. Uniquely, Wisbech Grammar School uses vertical tutor groups and the mixture of Lower and Upper Sixth pupils allows each member of the group to learn from the experiences of their peers. Form Tutors offer daily support whilst working closely with

pupils to complete successful UCAS applications. Pupils in the Sixth Form are given the opportunity to supplement their studies with the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This is much valued by universities due to its emphasis on independent study and research and allows pupils to specialise in an area which interests them. As well as the ever growing range of extra-curricular activities, the School is fully committed to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and Young Enterprise programme.

The benefits of A

good night's sleep is just as important as healthy eating and exercise for children's physical and mental development. As every parent knows, it can be the deciding factor between a harmonious and a hostile household. A well-rested child is more settled, pleasant to be around and ready for school the next day. More worryingly, scientific evidence shows there is a long list of damaging effects related to children not getting enough sleep including weight gain, poor concentration and forgetfulness, impaired ability to combat infection and illness, growth or hormone issues and behavioural problems. The brain also uses sleep to sift through the day’s events and process them, including any new skills that have been learned. Children around the age of five need an average of 11 hours' sleep a night, reducing by 15 minutes for

22

each year to 9.5 hours for an 11-yearold. However, every child is different, and the simplest way of knowing if your child is getting enough sleep is if they get up fairly easily in the morning and are alert and happy for most of the day. The Sleep Council recommends keeping bedtime to around the same time each evening, with the odd exception on non-school nights for children with an already established sleep pattern. And parents shouldn’t expect children to go to sleep as soon as they get in bed - most adults don’t. Playing quietly or reading for a little while until they drop off is fine. However, watching television or using electronic equipment such as computer tablets close to bedtime is a big no-no. It has been associated with bedtime resistance, difficulty falling asleep, anxiety around sleep and sleeping fewer hours.
