Welcome ...to the Easter issue of Term Times magazine. Winning is always a great feeling, whether you're a child or an adult. That’s why the Term Times team goes above and beyond in its efforts to search out a variety of fantastic family-friendly competitions to include in every edition of the magazine. We always receive an impressive number of entries and are delighted when winners send us photos of them enjoying their prizes. Well, we've really pushed the boat out this issue and have a fantastic - in fact I think it's safe to say unique - school sports day competition. Peter Burrow and Rocket the Hare, mascots for Peterborough United Football Club and Peterborough Greyhounds, have agreed to attend one lucky primary pupil's sports day. I anticipate there'll be lots of fun and frolics! Have a read through the magazine to find out what other competition prizes and give-aways are up for grabs. This issue also sees the launch of our annual Education Awards, with new partners Hamerton Zoo Park. We have seen the number of awards nominations grow year-on-year and hope 2018 will be bigger than ever. But we need you to tell us your top teachers and teaching assistants, school office team and, new for this year, most proactive PTA. We look forward to reading your nominations - it's always a very humbling experience. We also have two pages packed with events and activities to keep the whole family entertained this Easter school holiday as well as an interesting insight into the Racing for Schools charity supported by Huntingdon Racecourse among others. Enjoy the magazine, have a relaxing Easter and we look forward to seeing you again when Spring will hopefully have sprung.

More than half (54 percent) of those surveyed said doing chores - including washing up (39 percent), making the bed (35 percent) and setting the table (24 percent) - was the most popular tactic to promote positive behaviour.

Two family events are being staged this Easter as part of the Peterborough Celebrates campaign to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the city's iconic cathedral.

The company recognises the importance of bringing easily accessible, high calibre tutoring services to children in their own environment.

Tina and her team are available to discuss any request or answer questions.

In fact, the average British parent encourages their children to get involved from just six years old.

Peterborough Celebrates this Easter

Based in Peterborough, but serving Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and surrounding areas, Grade A Learning will focus on bringing exceptional tuition to students of all academic levels.

Tina Watson, Managing Director, says: ‘After 17 years of working with schools across Cambridgeshire, providing high quality supply teachers and support staff, Grade A Recruitment is now delighted to be able to provide experienced tutors to children aged four to 18 across all subject areas.’

A survey of 1,439 UK adults carried out by fuel supplier Emo Oil found 68 percent believe children should help out with household chores and tasks.

Nene Valley Railway is giving away 900 free rides in it's 900 Not Out Free Ticket Bonanza on 17 and 18 March.

Here are four more of our lucky competition winners. Aidan won a fantastic birthday party at Sacrewell, Ella Mae - holding a gym equipment key fob - is enjoying spending time at One Leisure centres after her mum won a three-month membership and Joshua and Sebastian both scooped books.

Hamerton Zoo Park: Term Times Education Awards 2018 partner Hamerton is a 25-acre open parkland zoo park near Sawtry and home to an ever-increasing collection of rare, endangered and unusual animals and birds.

Education Awards in partnership with

Open year-round, apart from Christmas day and Boxing Day, it is a sanctuary for almost 100 different species and plays a vital role in animal conservation.

It's that time of year again when we launch our search for those who go above and beyond to promote excellence within our local primary schools. The Term Times Education Awards 2018 is designed to recognise and reward their contribution - the unsung heroes who inspire and innovate. And this year we are delighted to announce we have a new awards partner, Hamerton Zoo Park, and an exciting new prize-winning category, Best PTA. Steven Beacham, Term Times Publisher, says: 'The Term Times Education Awards are always a cause for celebration as we applaud the hard work and commitment of those working in, and supporting, primary education. 'Their dedication to making a real difference to our children's school life and educational experience is truly inspiring. 'I am also very pleased to welcome Hamerton Zoo Park as this year's award partner.' Andrew Swales, Director of Hamerton Zoo Park, adds: 'We are delighted to support the awards because we believe in education...especially when it comes to conservation and the natural world. 'Hamerton is not only a great day out for the family, we also offer school educational workshops where children have the opportunity to learn about and meet some of our animals.'

Funds collected from visitors and supporters are contributed, whenever possible, to field research and in-situ conservation projects.

We now need your help to turn the spotlight on inspirational teachers and teaching assistants, dedicated school office staff and hard-working PTAs.

Educating visitors, both in its own work as well as the wider conservation of animals and the Earth's natural resources, is a key objective.

Nominations are invited from parents, headteachers, governors, co-workers and pupils, with parental permission, and can be made via the dedicated awards page on www.termtimes. ltd.uk, by post to 70 Rutland Road, Stamford, PE9 1UW, or via e-mail to steven@termtimes. ltd.uk

One way Hamerton achieves this is by running educational sessions for visiting schools and other groups on a wide variety of topics to suit all ages.

For postal and e-mail entries ensure you tell us which category you are voting for, the name of the individual/team and no more than 250 words about why they should win an award. You can submit one nomination for each category.

Primary school topics include looking at the similarities and differences between animal groups, how animals use their senses, camouflage and habitats.

The deadline for nominations is 12 noon on 19 July, 2018 so there's plenty of time to think about who you would like to single out for praise.

The half-hour workshops include getting close to, and handling, some of the small animals such as snakes, giant African land snails, giant millipedes, parrots and pygmy hedgehogs.

However, workshops can be tailored to a school's specific requirements and discussed in advance with the Education Officer. For more information visit www.hamertonzoopark.com

A panel of judges from Term Times and Hamerton Zoo Park will decide the winner in each category. Winners will each receive a special trophy to mark their achievement and a £100 www.highstreetvouchers.com voucher.

WIN A SCHOOL VISIT FROM SPORT MASCOTS Term Times has teamed up with Peterborough United Football Club and Peterborough Greyhounds to offer one lucky young reader the chance to win an exciting addition to their school sports day. POSH's Peter Burrow and Rocket the Hare from Peterborough Greyhounds will not only attend the winning pupil's year group sports day, but also take part in a fun rabbit versus hare challenge.

The winner and every child in their class will also win a POSH goody bag. Peter and Rocket are competing in head-to-head challenges across the city throughout 2018 in a bid to win the title of Peterborough's Ultimate Mascot. As Term Times went to press Peter Burrow was leading two to one. The school sports day will count as one of these challenges.

Peter Burrow's match day schedule

Rocket the Hare's personal factfile

12 noon: Arrive and take a look pitchside (I still get butterflies) 12.30pm: Put on my kit while listening to the Last Waltz, Let It Go and some Meat Loaf

I only have four baths a year and my favourite deodorant is Febreze

12.50pm: Head out to meet fans for photos and general messing about 1.50pm: Time to chill

I love supporting Peterborough Greyhounds because I am faster than any of the dogs

2pm: Meet first time fans for photos in the dug out and walk around the stands for more photos and to cause some craziness followed by a kick around with the other match day mascots

I can reach speeds of up to 45mph, if I really try hard, and am the fastest land mammal in the UK

2.45pm: Time to run, hop and dance like a crazy rabbit with POSH's Peeby and Mick the Skip and visit the away fans which they seem to enjoy (or maybe not!)

My ears are longer than Peter Burrows' as he's a rabbit I can swim really well

3pm: kick off Cheering for our lads on the pitch

Three words that best describe me are fast, faster and fastest

Half time Go in goal for penalty kicks with local junior football team players

I love to eat loads of grass, my favourite food, before I race

Second half: More cheering on the team Match end: More photos and high fives with the fans

My home is ‘Rocket Burrow’ where I live on my own

5pm: Return to my burrow for a much-needed lie down

For a chance to scoop this super prize simply follow the instructions on page 3. Please check with your Headteacher first. Closing date 10 April. The sports day visit is subject to availability by both mascots and must be in May, June or July 2018.

Making a difference The Children’s University is a national project which supports, encourages and celebrates the achievement of seven to 14 year olds, and five to six year olds with their families, who take part in out of hours learning activities. It recognises that learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom, it can happen anywhere and everywhere. Crucially, it enhances the joy of learning, boosts self-confidence and motivation and improves academic attainment. Any school, parent or child will tell you that being part of the Children’s University – and being celebrated and rewarded for taking part in out of school activities – makes a difference.

SCHOOLS Teachers in Peterborough Children’s University schools have noticed that participation: • Raises pupils’ self-esteem • Encourages children to try different activities and have a go at new things • Helps children build friendships with others outside their usual friendship group • Creates excitement – children are keen to show what they’ve done and achieved

The list of Children’s University Learning Destinations continues to grow.

New this term are: • The Deepings Library • City of Peterborough Swimming Club • Cambridge Cheer Academy • Nene School of Dancing • Imagination Theatre Arts • Wood Green, The Animals Charity • Oakham Castle • Fenland Clarion Cycling Club

PARENTS ‘My daughter likes doing things outside of school, but the Children’s University has made her more motivated.’ ‘We really enjoy completing activities and challenges together.’

CHILDREN The University of the First Age recently looked at the impact of the Children’s University and it found:

University of the First Age study, experience reduced stress and anxiety. And every week more schools, organisations and children are joining the Children’s University and enjoying the benefits of membership. This year the project will be celebrating local children’s achievements with a citywide graduation ceremony in a new and bigger venue, Peterborough Cathedral.

• 80.95% of participating children believed that their involvement in Children’s University helped them in lessons • 72% of participating children believed that Children’s University makes school more fun and interesting By being involved in Children’s University, children are introduced to new activities and knowledge, build confidence, develop their communication skills and, according to the

Be part of the adventure and look out for the Passport To Learning logo when you are out and about.

CHildhood Vaccinations ........................................ Research from around the world shows that immunisation is the safest way to protect your child’s health. Parents often have questions about why their baby or child needs to be vaccinated, especially when we don’t hear about the diseases children are being vaccinated against.

If you're not going to be able to get to the GP surgery when a vaccination is due, talk to your doctor, as it may be possible to arrange to have your child immunised at a different time.

This is because of the effective immunisation programmes in the UK.

If you've missed a vaccination it is possible to catch up.

The number of children catching serious diseases is now very low.

How do vaccines work?

But if children do not continue to be immunised, the diseases will come back. Diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella, influenza…these are just some of the serious infectious diseases your baby and child will be protected from through vaccination, before they start school. Many of these diseases are still around in other parts of the world and your child may be at risk if you travel with your family. And, with more people coming to visit this country, there is always a risk that your child could come into contact with the infections in this country. Vaccines are routinely offered to everyone in the UK free of charge on the NHS. Try to have your child's vaccinations administered on time to ensure they are protected.

.

24

Vaccines contain a small part of the bacterium or virus that causes a disease, or tiny amounts of the chemicals the bacterium produces. They work by causing the body’s immune system to make antibodies required to fight off the infection. If your child comes into contact with the infection, the antibodies will recognise it and be ready to protect him or her. Because vaccines have been used so successfully in the UK, diseases such as polio have disappeared from this country. How do we know that vaccines are safe? Before a vaccine is allowed to be used, its safety and effectiveness have to be thoroughly tested. After they have been licensed, vaccine safety continues to be monitored. Any rare side effects that are discovered can then be assessed further. All medicines can cause side effects, but vaccines are among the very safest.

Racing to School An exciting educational initiative is giving schoolchildren the opportunity to experience unique behind-the-scenes access at Huntingdon Racecourse. The Jockey Club racecourse is an active supporter of the Racing to School charity which delivers free outdoor learning activities for young people at racecourses, studs and trainers’ yards across the country. Currently the education charity works with around 200 primary and secondary schools, with 350 events scheduled this year. Liam Johnson, Huntingdon Racecourse General Manager, explains: 'Racing to School is all about getting the younger generation involved with horse racing. 'The Education Programme we host gives them an insight into what goes on both behind-the-scenes and in public view on a typical race day - from the jockey’s weighing room to the horses in the parade ring. 'We are very proud to work with the charity and the chance to offer children, many of whom have never been racing before, the opportunity to learn more about our exciting and accessible sport.'

Equine fact file

Racing to School's Education Programme aimed at children in Year 5 and above - enriches a range of National Curriculum subjects, sparks interest in the sport of horseracing and opens young minds to the many different career opportunities within the industry. Educational opportunities at racecourses, such as Huntingdon, range from weights and measurements and the handicapping system to the geometry in the construction of fences, the art and symmetry used in jockeys silks, to the science of jockey nutrition. It offers young people many exciting ways to practice their school subjects and apply them to real life settings. Each pupil is given a workbook that focuses on numeracy and literacy and contains a range of resources that supports interactive and outdoor learning. They and their teachers are encouraged to continue working with the racing-themed books back in the classroom.
