Welcome to this issue One of the joys of being a parent is witnessing the vitality for life and the passion with which children approach the things they love. Whether that’s a sport’s team, their friendships, toys, music, films or other pastimes – even if we as adults don’t agree or understand the fascination – their resolve is inspiring. In our household, most recently, that fierce fascination has been directed towards storm Ciara and storm Dennis.

While the adults bunkered down to wait the storms out, the children were eager to enjoy the chance of getting blown away or drenched by the heaviest downpours. Their visceral excitement wasn’t tainted by any of the negativity streaming from their adults – they embraced the muddy puddles, the ferocious winds and sudden shifts as something new and exciting. It’s a mindset, I think, more of us old folks should rediscover. Consequently, in this issue, we’ve an array of competitions that encourage families to enjoy the great outdoors whatever the weather, including a family ticket to Huntingdon Races’ Easter Monday and a 13-month family membership to Sacrewell.

While we cannot cater to every passion, we do have a variety of prizes for a range of interests too, including the chance for puzzlers to win one of five Rubik’s cubes and budding palaeontologists and geologists to grab a National Geographic Dino Dig or Crystal Garden Set. We have also been lucky to get a sneak preview at the recently refurbed Cromwell Museum in Huntingdon, which should intrigue any future Historians …. or Revolutionaries!

CLEAN UP YOUR GREEN FINGERS Up The Garden Bath is a new non-profit social enterprise in Peterborough that upcycles unwanted bath tubs in to ready-made garden planters. These recycled raised planters have been designed with a wooden surround to make it more accessible for children in particular.

In addition to providing one of the planters, the company delivers a fun, educational look-and-learn workshop to teach students about self-sufficiency, eating healthily and the importance of recycling. The workshops have been created in consultation with PECT. There are already several Mini Allotment planters and its larger Pollen Paradise planter schedule for installation at a number of Cambridgeshire primary schools, including Woodston Primary School. SCHOOL NEWS! Ramsey Spinning Infants School is holding an Easter Bunny Hunt on Saturday 28 March, 2-4pm. Costing £1.50 per person, children can explore in search of the Easter bunnies with letters and solve the anagram. Food and refreshments available. The event is organised by the Parents and Friends of Ramsey Spinning infants group.

EASTER AT THE CATHEDRAL Spend Easter Monday, 13 April, from 11am – 2pm, at Peterborough Cathedral’s Fun Day. Children can make crafts and an Easter garden to take home, hear the Easter story and enjoy a Easter-themed treasure hunt as they explore the Cathedral. JUST DOGS LIVE The eagerly anticipated Just Dogs Live, incorporating The East of England Championship Dog Show, is expecting more than 8,000 dogs to visit the East of England Arena and Event Centre for the show on 10-12 July. Over the course of the three-day show, Just Dogs Live will engage and educate on the wonders of dogs through demonstrations, seminars, competitions and have-a-go activities. The event is open to all, whatever the pedigree. SAY YAY, NOT NAY, THIS EASTER AT REDWINGS The free We Love Donkeys event is returning to Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Norwich this Easter, with three weekends jam-packed with exciting activities for the whole family. Starting on Friday 3 April at Redwings Aylsham, north of Norwich; Redwings Caldecott, near Great Yarmouth; and Redwings Ada Cole, near Harlow, you can make a long-eared friend during special meet ‘n’ greets sessions with the sanctuary’s fabulous Adoption Star donkeys.

What is Forest School and how is it a benefit to students?

Our Environmental Education programme is based at the Discovery Den in Ferry Meadows and is designed to deliver National Curriculum objectives through outdoor learning. We have a range of different day courses for Key Stages 1-4, each with a different theme. Some of the most popular courses include our Key Stage 1 day ‘Once Upon a Time’, which uses traditional fairy tales to deliver literacy learning and our Key Stage 2 ‘Living Rivers’ day that helps teachers to deliver the geography curriculum. New for 2020 is our Key Stage 2 ‘Romans Day’ that draws on the Roman heritage of Ferry Meadows.

Forest School is a model of outdoor learning that originated in Scandinavia and has been increasing in popularity across the UK. Schools offering Forest School to their students commit to providing children with regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees.

What do you hope children leave having learnt after their time at Nene Park?

One of the great advantages of outdoor learning is that it gives pupils an opportunity to engage with their environment. Studies have shown that children who have regular contact with the outdoors are more likely to engage positively with environmental issues in later life. We hope that by providing an opportunity we will be inspiring the next generation to value and protect it.

What experiences does Nene Park bring to schools?

Our outreach programme brings a range of adventure activities to schools. Suitability of activities depends on the space available, but popular choices include mobile climbing walls, archery and problem-solving activities. We provide the equipment and our qualified and experienced instructors lead all the outreach activities in the school setting.

At Nene Outdoors, we offer schools the opportunity to bring children to our dedicated Forest School site to take part in activities delivered by our qualified staff. Schools may bring the same group of children regularly so skills can be developed over the course of several weeks, or they can book a taster session where children have an opportunity to take part in activities such as tool use or fire lighting, which may not be practical for them to do in their own setting.

What other popular activities are offered to students at Nene Park?

From our base at Nene Outdoors Watersports and Activity Centre we offer a huge range of adventure activities. In the summer months, Gunwade Lake is the perfect venue for watersports such as sailing, raft building and kayaking. For those preferring to stay dry; climbing, archery and bushcraft are just a few of the land based activities on offer. Environmental education activities are available for ages from early years through to adult. Adventure activities are available for ages 8+.

Journalist Caroline Schmidt tests one of the themed National Geographic dig kits to see if they really are as fun and engaging as they look for ages eight and over

THE BIG DIG Anything that combines excavating, mess-making and science has got to be a winner for inquisitive children, so I knew this toy from National Geographic would be a hit. The ‘Nat Geo’ Shark Tooth Dig Kit comes with tools to discover three real shark teeth from the Sand Tiger, Otodu and Crow Sharks.

Although it’s earmarked for children aged eight years and over, it held the interest of my six-year- old for at least half an hour, who was also keen to learn about the fossils’ origins from the included Shark Tooth Learning Guide.

to discover the fossils, like a real palaeontologist. This under eight did well for 20 minutes before requesting a hammer for a heavier-handed approach.

It's advisable to supervise and guide users on the right techniques for managing the fine dust, to avoid it reaching their eyes. Cromwell Museum reopens The Cromwell Museum in Huntingdon has formally reopened offering an improved visitor’s experience and new insights into the life and time of Oliver Cromwell Over the last four months, the interior of the 800-year-old building on Huntingdon High Street has been refurbished to make it brighter, more inviting and interactive for visitors. The museum, which pays homage to Huntingdon-born British Prime Minister Sir Oliver Cromwell, was reopened this month by former Prime Minister Sir John Major after a parade through the town by re-enactors from the Sealed Knot Society.

Since its renovations, more of the building’s original medieval arches and columns have been revealed as well having its mahogany floor restored. Improved lighting and cases showcase the museum’s new and old collections. There are new information panels, interactive displays

and films that explain the life and time of Oliver Cromwell. Paintings have also been restored, including a life-sized portrait of Cromwell by Robert Walker, which is now in pride of place at the museum’s entrance.

Amongst the personal items on display are Cromwell’s hat (with a replica you can try on), his swords, medical chest and copies of the cast taken off his face after he died. Visitors can engage in more hands-on displays, with a chance to try on a helmet, lift a pike or share your opinions on what sort of person you think Cromwell really was. Films, animations and projections also explain more about him and paint a picture of Britain at the time, bringing a key part of British history to life.

The Museum will be open Tuesday – Sunday 11am – 4pm, admission is free of charge – although charitable donations are welcome.
