FULLY REFURBISHED
Welcome to this issue of
Easter time is a precious holiday in the Term Times house not only for the younger members of the family, but it also brings back vivid memories of Easters past. I remember very clearly my stepbrother being introduced into the family tradition of receiving a blown hen’s egg filled with dark chocolate and nearly breaking his teeth on it (obviously a practice not encouraged these days due to possible exposure to raw egg!). As a child, I loved receiving my chocolate egg. Certain favourites appeared year in year out… even better when the eggs started appearing in mugs or with my name iced on it (although the name tag didn’t seem to stop my siblings and I raiding each others’ stashes!). While the designs may have changed on the packaging, the excitement is still there for children past and present. As a parent, the ‘egg hunt’ family outing has really evolved with maps, craft activities and even the odd Geocache to find that golden egg. So many local attractions offer such a great variety of Easter-related fun and, if you are popping along to one of the organised egg hunts, we would love to see your pictures and share them on our social media pages. Easter is not just about chocolate. Obviously, it’s a significant religious date in the Christian calendar and it’s also when we like to think of new beginnings. New flowers, lambs and general optimism for the year ahead. In these uncertain times, it is important to face the future with a light step and a smile. The following spring verse might help us all towards those simple goals. I hope it makes you smile and encourages you to embrace all the new beginnings: Spring is sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where the birdies is? PS. Remember to treat your mum this month for Mother’s Day on 31 March… they deserve it! Besides, your life won’t be worth living if you forget! Enjoy the issue,

Egg-cellent Easter Crafts It’s time to get cracking on What you’ll need: To dye the eggs: some Easter crafts – let’s Eggs begin with an old favourite! Assorted food colouring Eggs have been symbols of new life and spring long before they became the signature of Easter and it’s arguably a childhood rite of passage to dress them up for the occasion. Styles of egg crafts have come a long way way over the years and seem to get more elaborate and intricate, with hand-painting, pen art and character designs destined as a centrepiece long after Easter. But let’s start with the less tricky designs. To begin with, you'll need some eggs; white shells are ideal but not always easy to come by so regular brown eggs can work just fine, you may just need to leave them in the dye a little longer.
Preserve your eggs There’s no point losing out on the tasty inners so hard boil or ‘blow-out’ the eggs before you begin.
Vinegar Cups Hot water Plastic gloves For the marble effect: Olive oil and paint Or nail polish A shallow dish Drying rack Kitchen towel (to clean up the inevitable mess)
Make your mixture
To dye your eggs, mix half a cup of off-the-boil water with 1tsp of vinegar and 10-20 drops of food colouring depending on how deep you want the colour to be. Repeat this for every egg/colour combination. Encourage children to experiment with their colour mixing too by handing them primary colours to see what they can create.
Dip your eggs
Depending on the quality and pigment of your food colouring, this part may take five minutes to an hour until you reach the desired colour density. During this time periodically rotate the eggs under the coloured water to get an even covering, then scoop them out with a spoon or pincers to dry and drain on kitchen towel and a cooling rack.
Give these a try ...
How to marble
Mix a few drops of paint into water and olive oil (or add drops of nail polish to a tray of distilled water for the same effect). Swish the mixture into swirls and then carefully roll the egg along the surface so it picks up the colour. For these we used various mixtures of glitter nail polish and metallic paint. Have fun!
Position stickers or tape over the surface of the egg for some post-dye patterns. Tissue paper and decoupage glue …enough said. Add some funky feathers and a cardboard beak to your colourful eggs for delightful birds. Get handy with a paint brush and some glitter! Mix dye in whipped cream or shaving cream for a mottled watercolour effect.

New chapter for Baston Primary School Work is underway transforming a doubledecker bus into a new library for Baston Church of England Primary School. "Thanks to parents, the local community, external applications and PTA fundraising we have raised £23,000 of our £28,500 target in just four months - amazing for a small village school." Parents, villagers, companies and contractors have volunteered their time and expertise and the bus, donated by Stagecoach East Midlands, is now stripped, cleaned and painted ready for fitting out. Mrs Mills says: "We are fortunate to have a very active PTA and the Library Bus is undoubtedly its most ambitious and exciting initiative. We are really excited to be creating a community project that celebrates reading." Shoppers can support the project through the ‘Tesco Bags of Help’ initiative at Market Deeping, Stamford and Peterborough's Dogsthorpe, Chadburn and Werrington stores, throughout March and April.

The average weekly amount boys receive is £7.09, compared to £6.91 for girls, while nearly a quarter of parents make their children earn their pocket money by doing chores, although almost half say they would withhold cash if the jobs were not done properly. 2018 Halifax Pocket Money report
KA-CHING! up with the Joneses Celebrity financial expert Jasmine Birtles shares her valuable advice with writer Kate Chapman for handling the pennies and pounds of pocket money
“I think it’s absolutely fine to tell children they have to earn it too – they should be doing chores, contributing to family household and playing their part,” she adds. You could also give them the opportunity to earn extra money if they are saving up for something special. “A lot of children, particularly younger ones, think that money comes out of the hole in the wall, so it’s important to explain where it does come from and how you earn it. “You need to give them an idea of how you are managing the household finances. It’s really helpful if you are struggling to sit down and talk together to perhaps work towards saving for something as a family.
How much is too much? How old is too young? Is it given or is it earned? When your son comes home to say his friend gets £10 a week and can he have the same - are you aghast at the amount, send him packing with a list of chores or say ‘sure, how about £15?!’ We all want to help our children understand the true value of money and develop sound financial habits for life, but is giving rather than earning pocket money a good way of doing this? Financial expert, author and TV presenter Jasmine Birtles thinks receiving weekly unearned pocket money will help children develop healthy spending and saving habits, standing them in good stead from an early age.
“You could do things such as a car-boot stall together, find things to sell on eBay and, by working as a family in this way, you can achieve your goal and then your children will understand they are not being deprived. This way, they can help be part of the solution too,” Jasmine suggests. For more information visit www.jasminebirtles.com
“I am very pro-pocket money – I think it’s good for them to have a small unearned amount each week. I also think they should be given opportunities to earn more through doing chores if possible, as well as training on what to do with it,” she says. “You can give them an idea of what they can get if they spend their money now – such as sweets or a magazine – or what they could get if they waited for a few weeks to buy something bigger like a particular toy. It’s all about forming good habits for the future at a relatively early age,” Jasmine says that the sum each child receives is down to individual families to decide and should only be an amount parents can comfortably afford. She recommends giving children pocket money from the age of five or six, when they have started to recognise coins and the sums they are worth, and suggests that £1 or £2 per week is ample.

Railworld Promotion
Our world
Railworld Wildlife Haven, in Peterborough, is somewhere very special. Created by volunteers for over 30 years – supported by companies, groups and individuals – it was their environmental mission to create a habitat from a derelict coal yard. The haven is now home to more than 300 species of flora and fauna, as well as a 2,000sq ft model railway to enjoy. It’s a place designed to intrigue and excite children as they explore and learn about the wonders of the world. But that’s just for starters… Self-funded and run by volunteers, the Railworld Wildlife Haven is embarking on a momentous campaign to create a new £4m Entertaining and Educational Centre to help people understand the potentially devastating effects of changing temperatures on our world, if left unchecked. Whilst many people believe the planet heats up and cools down, as do the oceans rise and fall, no differently than it has for generations, it is happening faster than ever. Whether climate change is fiction or fact remains undetermined, but without a doubt the Industrial Revolution has had a huge effect. The burning of fossil fuels has increased carbon dioxide and the rising number of trees being cut down means this carbon dioxide cannot be changed into oxygen – causing the world to warm. Caution dictates we need to learn at the very least how to look after our planet, if only for our children’s children. Our environment is one thing that we all ‘own’ and we all share a responsibility for. FACEBOOK/Railworld Wildlife Haven TWITTER@Railworld www.railworld.org.uk
