FULLY REFURBISHED

Welcome to this issue of

Time: we all need more of it, but how well do we use what we have? Our daily routines are crammed to the minute with work, chores, family and social plans, but it still seems like there’s never enough, which got us thinking about time given by others for our children. Given the extra-curricular activities of an average primary-school child, this ‘extra’ time required by families often comes from others. The others I refer to are numerous. Whilst on a two-day rugby tour with my son, the coaches (all of whom are volunteers) gave up five hours in one day to facilitate the needs of our children, that’s even before I mention their input in planning. The day before they also looked after the children as they did high ropes, fencing and a variety of other pursuits. All of them are parents and have their own time constraints. These heroes are not just limited to the sports fields but appear at school too in the shape of volunteers, and at organisations such as Cubs, Scouts and Brownies, the list is endless. Even one of our advertisers, the Citizens Advice Bureau in Peterborough, is calling out for volunteers whose responsibilities sometimes will include giving time to aid families. Time is a consideration of all, but many families benefit from the time given by others. As a family we thank them for all their input that’s helping to shape our children and as a local community magazine we champion their efforts. We would like to hear about people that give their time, for your child, your school or your family. Send us your details and we will publish a selection of these ‘Family Champions’. The published Champions will each receive a gift from us at Term Times as a small gesture of appreciation. Enjoy the issue and all that comes with it and don’t forget your Dad on 16 June, he needs a pat on the back sometimes! Enjoy the issue,

Childr en love learning with Peterborough Children’s University!

More than 1,000 children benefit from extra-curricular learning experiences through the Children’s University. Find out how your child can too… The Children’s University is a national scheme that promotes and celebrates children’s learning outside the school classroom, and here in Peterborough more schools and families are joining us. The Children’s University encourages children to get involved in different activities, to develop new skills and enjoy new experiences. Through signposting, encouraging and celebrating participation in fun, high-quality learning experiences, we aim to grow inquisitive, confident, motivated and independent children and learners. Over 1000 children are now enjoying learning with the Peterborough Children’s University. Celebrating their achievements is really important to us. Thanks to the grant from Tesco Bags of Help, we are able to hold this important occasion in the Peterborough Cathedral for the second year running and with so many children ready to graduate we are holding a morning and an afternoon ceremony. This will be a fabulous day and a fitting recognition of the achievements of our Peterborough CU children.

With the number of Learning Destinations growing every month, there are plenty of opportunities for children and families to engage in really high level learning in a range of locations in the Peterborough area as well as in other parts of the country. Any child, aged five to 14-years-old can join The Children’s University and it will cost just £6 to get started. A child will be issued with a paper passport, the CU Passport To Learning, and an online E-licence, and is then signposted to the many and varied CU validated Learning Activities and experiences which are available locally and nationally. Each hour of CU-validated learning they complete brings the child closer to a Children’s University graduation certificate, which start at 30 hours and goes through to 1,000 hours. The awards are then presented at a locally-organised CU graduation ceremony. The scheme is accessible through many schools and our Virtual School is available for children whose school isn’t registered with us.

Be part of the adventure and look out for the Passport To Learning logo when you are out and about. If you are a school or a parent who would like to be a part of Peterborough Children’s University, or a venue interested in becoming a Learning Destination, contact Gill Hall, Peterborough Children’s University Manager, at Gill.Hall@vivacity.org or call 01733 864 729. Take the LEAP and save money Find out how LEAP, a free money-saving advice service, could potentially save you hundreds If you're struggling to pay your energy bills don't trust in a leap of faith to save you money, rely on LEAP – your new national support service. Standing for Local Energy Advice Partnership, LEAP offers you a helping hand to receive free insulation, advice and energy-saving measures. LEAP is funded by major energy companies and offers a comprehensive, free of charge service to help households who might be struggling with their energy bills up and down the country. The eligibility criteria is broad – if you have children and you’re on a low income, claiming Child Tax Credit or Child Benefit, then you may qualify for free help from LEAP.

The LEAP HEA will also be able to give free energy efficiency hints and tips and, if they have a heating controller, advise on how to set it to save energy. The residents’ energy tariff will be checked and, if they are not on the best tariff, the LEAP HEA will help them to change to a cheaper one. On average, a household can save more than £200 a year by switching their heating and electricity supply to the cheapest tariff.

Your local council and other local and communitybased organisations such as the Citizens’ Advice Bureau and local food banks can refer you to the LEAP service, or you can apply yourself via the dedicated website: www.applyforleap.org.uk

Where funding is available, the HEA may be able to arrange for larger-scale measures such as loft insulation. The HEAs can check if your property has uninsulated cavity walls or an uninsulated loft – if there is no insulation, the HEA can find out if this can be installed for you. However, LEAP goes far beyond looking at energy efficiency. The service offers plenty of valuable advice on reducing your overall household bills, maximising income and available benefits.

If you qualify, a LEAP Home Energy Advisor (HEA) will visit your home to evaluate your current heating and warmth levels. If possible, the advisor will then fit a variety of energy and water-saving measures, such as draughtproofing, low-energy LED lightbulbs, radiator panels and shower savers, which can save households around £30 a year on their energy bills.

LEAP can also organise for a follow-up telephone consultation with a money advice specialist from IncomeMax. IncomeMax is dedicated to helping householders to access millions of pounds of unclaimed benefits, grants and other financial help. IncomeMax advisors know what help is available for priority bills like energy, water, rent, mortgages and council tax, and can also help deal with any debt problems.

Call LEAP today for free on 0800 060 7567 or apply online at www.applyforleap.org.uk

Case studies: Feeling the benefits of LEAP Sharmila's savings Sharmila in Peterborough was pleased with her visit from Home Energy Advisor Andy. She was able to make an annual saving of £606 by switching energy providers and was also grateful for the easy measures that Andy was able to install for her. Her new LED bulbs are giving off the same brightness, but using much less energy, which she is very happy about. Sharmila has also been referred on to IncomeMax to see if she is entitled to receive the Affordable Warmth discount as well as any other further benefits that she is not currently receiving.

Peter's water discount Peter in Devon was pleased with his visit from Nicola as he found the energy efficiency advice very useful. Nicola was able to help Peter to switch energy providers saving him £228 per year. She was also able to refer him onto the income maximisation service, which couldn't offer him further income, but did say that he may be entitled to a discount on his water bill, which would save him further money. Peter was very happy with the service he received from LEAP and said that he thinks "it is a great scheme that and would be happy to recommend to others."

Discovering

Sacrewell More than just another farm, Sacrewell offers families a fun-filled day out with a dash of education and animal appreciation. Journalist Caroline Schmidt explores what this Peterborough-based heritage and country centre has in to offer “It was super – I got to make s’mores!” endorses my six-year-old son, Aiden, “and I learnt about the olden days when there was no electricity, about kinetic energy…and I won the [Easter egg] hunt…when can we go back?” he asks while journeying home. His two-year-old brother, who sits soundly asleep next to him, clearly concurs – exhausted after more than an hour of soft play in the immense Playbarn, a bumpy tractor ride and several hours of fun exploring the beautiful blossom-covered grounds of the Sacrewell Heritage Farm and Country Centre. These days an open farm needs to be more than a working farm to attract the public for days out; the stakes are higher as people expect more than a few sheep, horses and goats – but, I hasten to add, Sacrewell didn’t disappoint. In fact, on almost every level, we got far more than we bargained for – especially from £17.99 per family (two-year-olds and under are free). As part of the William Scott Abbott Trust, Sacrewell is a Heritage Lottery-funded charity that aims to provide an agricultural education for everyone, from school children to heritage enthusiasts, and it certainly does that. Dating

back to the Domesday survey of 1086, Sacrewell’s history is fascinating and centred around a restored 18th Century watermill, children get a sense of what it was like before the dawn of microwaves, iPads and light bulbs. There’s woodcarving workshops and a working blacksmith on site too, so lots to nurture eager minds. We didn’t spend as long as I’d hoped in the mill as the boys had far more important things on their minds: Easter eggs. Sacrewell’s Giant Easter Egg Hunt enticed all the children – and many zealous adults – to explore the trails and many animals around the centre before exchanging their completed maps for a rather generous reward. Although this may sound a seasonal treat, Sacrewell apparently substitute Easter eggs for treasure hunts regularly as well as hosts varied events – fancy a Viking Re-enactment in July? It’s worth checking their website (www.sacrewell.org. uk) for upcoming events over the school holidays and weekends but, even on a regular day, there’s plenty to keep the family entertained. For £1.50pp you can cook s’mores over an open fire (that’s a giant marshmallow squished between two chocolate digestives for anyone not familiar with

the campfire delicacy); see feeding demonstrations and enjoy animal handling in the Animal Village; before taking a tour on the mini tractors. You’ve then got an actual 20-minute tractor ride around the farm (£1.50pp) where you can learn how food goes from field to fork. Paul, our driver, educated and entertained as he drove us through the grounds showing us the orchard, crops, camping site and its tenants Riverford Organic Farms – which, incidentally, is one of many local providers whom supply Sacrewell with its café-sold produce. There was very little not to like about Sacrewell – safety is obviously at the forefront with plenty of washbasins and reminders to clean your hands, as well as carefully placed disinfectant pads for people to walk on. Its wide paths make it very accessible and buggy-friendly, picnics are welcomed with many dedicated seating areas throughout and inside the Playbarn. But, if you have a couple of bottomless eaters like I do, you’ll love the wholesome meals in the Origin 8 café served 12-2pm. Sandwiches and cakes are available in the Playbarn café and you only have to ask for the variety of options available for those who are dairy or gluten free. All-in-all a great day out for exhausting and educating the kids.

Peterborough Cathedral goes mobile New augmented-reality app guides and educates visitors on the incredible Peterborough Cathedral You can now explore Peterborough Cathedral in a whole new way thanks to the launch of its dedicated trail app. When used on mobile phones or tablets, this free app uses visual recognition to find points of interest. Each stop triggers bites of information about the history and purpose of the Cathedral, as well as augmented-reality animations, ‘hands-on’ games and puzzles. Look out for the leaping fish in the font, try your hand at playing a tune in the choir stalls, and rearrange Jesus and his disciples in a jigsaw of the Apse Chapel ceiling. The app was launched in early April by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Justin Welby, whose office dates back more than 1,400 years. The trail has been made using the award-winning Gamar app, which has been used by some of London’s top attractions such as the British Museum and Madame Tussauds. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, says: “Cathedrals are places of welcome for all sorts of people, so it’s wonderful to have a variety of ways in which they can get information and experience their visit. God has given us Cathedrals as places of fun, joy and good news. Cathedrals are places that do exciting, imaginative things, and I warmly welcome this innovative new way of helping people engage with sacred spaces and, ultimately, with Jesus Christ.” To download the app, go to the Apple App Store or Google Play and search for ‘Gamar Ltd’. Then look for the ‘Peterborough Cathedral Trail’ to download. Once you have downloaded the trail, you are ready to go to the Cathedral and play. TIPS TO REDUCE LEAD LEVELS Only use water from the kitchen cold water tap for drinking and cooking Only cook or drink with fresh cold water – run the tap for a couple of minutes before use until you feel the temperature drop

Lead could be harmful, particularly if you’re pregnant or have young children. Check your pipe where it enters your property, usually at your stop tap.

Boiling will not remove lead from the water Replacing lead pipes is the only sure way to eliminate lead levels completely

Father’s Day

Say it best with

a custom card!

GIFTS

It takes mere minutes to create a handmade card for Dad but means a lot more, and cost a lot less, than if you were to deliver store-bought sentiments. This 'card' is ideal for children of all ages and abilities.

Knock dad’s gimmicky socks off this year with experiences and crafts that show you care! Mugs and socks that declare he’s the greatest dad, framed photographs for his work desk or maybe his favourite tipple are failsafe options, but let’s try something different this year. Personalised gifts are heartfelt and often mean the most, but some dads might argue a thrill-seeking day-off or a night out is exactly what they’d wish for on Father’s Day this year. Term Times has something for everyone, including an unusual but quickand-easy card the children can create too. Time to get personal Engraved wallets, personalised books and handprint keychains are some favourite Father’s Day gifts and there are plenty to choose from online and in stores. However, for something really unique that puts his smiling face front and centre, check out www.printster.co.uk. It offers personalised

face wrapping paper and the Father’s Day staple – socks. You just can’t get away from them! Get active

If he’s an outdoor enthusiast or adrenaline junkie, buy him a gift voucher for an experience. The Grafham Water Centre, Nene Park and Ride@Wyboston all host a range of adventure and water-based activities for adults. National Children’s Gardening Week Join in w

ith this week-long family event for some green-fi n

gered fun and help children to grow

Make your sunflowers smile Shopping list • Small plant pots • Bamboo cane • Garden string

• Multi-purpose compost • Pack of sunflower seeds

Instructions

National Children’s Gardening Week is a fantastic opportunity for families to get outside with nature, plants and wildlife to impart the joys of gardening to kids. Happening between 25 May - 2 June, hundreds of garden centres and schools will be providing activities, events and promotions to encourage children to give gardening a go. This year, former Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins has written a set of brilliant activities designed for children, including ‘Grow your own pizza.’ You don’t have to restrict the fun to the week – you’ll be able

to pick projects to use all-year round at home from edible hanging baskets to growing a bamboo TiPi made from runner beans. More than 1.5 million children garden at school in the UK because it’s more than just good outdoor fun, school gardening has been shown to have many benefits to health and wellbeing. Gardening has been proven to make children happier, more physically active and to help with social interaction, all-in-all cultivating better behaviour in the classroom and a willingness to learn.

 Fill your small pots with compost.  Plant a seed in each pot and give it a watering. Put your pot onto a window sill and water it once the seed sprouts so the compost stays damp.  As your sunflower grows, tie the stem of the sunflower loosely to the bamboo cane with your garden string to support your plants.  Once the frosty weather is over (usually mid-May), dig a hole in your garden for your sunflower. Ideally dig it next to a wall or fence that gets lots of sun.  Squeeze your sunflower and the compost it’s growing in out of your pot, and plant it in the hole you’ve dug. Put a bamboo cane next to your sunflower, and give your sunflower a good watering.  As your sunflower grows, make sure you tie the stem to the bamboo cane loosely with garden string. Try tying it using a ‘figure-ofeight’ knot as this will reduce any rubbing on the stem.  When your sunflower appears, gently tease out the seed heads to make a fantastic sunny smiling face.
