Welcome to this issue As I write this letter on an early sunny and mild January day, a news story pops up to announce that the last decade in the UK was the second warmest in 100 years. Snow does seem like a distant childhood memory and although the ‘Beast from the East’ was bad, closing many schools, it seems our winters are much milder overall. We’re lucky in the UK that even when the weather does turn, we are spoilt for choice for great family things to do across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Rutland. In this issue, we explore all the new delights at Big Sky in Peterborough, a warm and familiar haven for families – look out for their their advert on page 15 for more details! The Role Play Village is now open, too, although I don’t think a road gritter is one of the roles on offer. Places like Sacrewell are great for both temperate extremes with indoor and outdoor activities as well as a host of school holiday events to occupy and entertain. Our theatres have plenty of shows on and let’s not forget the new indoor event that promises to be an extravaganza this season: Peterborough’s Kid’s Fest, which makes its debut on 8/9 February at the Peterborough Arena, check out their website for more details at www.kidsfest.co.uk Turn a few of these pages and your fingertips will soon be warmed with the chance of winning some great competitions. There’s an Easter family coach trip from Shaws, tickets to Skylarks new February half-term offering, a fabulous fairy tales’ book and over £100-worth of free performing arts tuition at the Urban Arts Academy. Wishing you a fun half term and if the weather allows, seize the opportunity to build that snowman when you can.

All-time high in vitamin D prescriptions for British children Study highlights that public could do more to safeguard their vitamin D levels with supplements. A new study, published in the medical journal BMJ Open, has revealed that prescribing of high dose vitamin D for British children has surged to an all-time high. The analysis of data from 744 GP surgeries, representing 6% of the UK population, found that prescriptions for the bone health vitamin have risen 25-fold over the last ten years. Nearly 13,000 children, mostly girls, received vitamin D supplements for the first time during this period. It’s suggested that increased prescribing may be due to greater awareness of vitamin D deficiency but also the lack of supplementation during the winter months. It’s advised to safeguard vitamin D status that you should eat oily fish, eggs and take vitamin D supplements or a multivitamin that contains 10μg of vitamin D.

Local people share their favourite Peterborough moments Hundreds of residents have shared their favourite places and moments in Peterborough as part of a citywide, award-winning #1000Moments campaign The campaign, #1000Moments, is about celebrating the city by sharing moments, memories and stories of life in Peterborough. The 80 residents who contributed their moments were professionally photographed and filmed, and the photographs are being posted on the Peterborough Presents Facebook page in the run up to Valentine’s Day 2020. All of the collected memories can be found at www.WeLovePeterborough.co.uk and includes walks along the Nene, football matches at London Road, sledging at Ferry Meadows, being Bretton Festival Princess and the joy of a mosh pit. The #1000Moments project is a collaboration between Peterborough Presents, We Love Peterborough, Jumped Up Theatre, Thomas Byron Photography and Peterborough Regional College. The campaign received a Highly Commended Award at the recent Athene Peterborough Regional PR & Media Awards 2019. Here you can see a selection of the photographs from young people involved in the project. Interestingly, they all talk about a moment where they felt special performing or being involved in creativity! What would your #1000Moments memory be?

Peterborough is a place where I am finding my voice and am being accepted for who I am. July 2019, I performed in a BHM event in Cathedral Square. It was my best performance to date and I felt like a rock star.

I performed on stage at Pride. I was a bit nervous in front of hundreds of people but I felt like I belonged there. Peterborough is an amazing town, it's so open for everyone.

This year UROCK Youth Theatre, which I am part of, celebrated our great achievements with an evening of performances and awards. Bringing everyone together it showed I was part of a supportive community for young people who also make great work.

I like dancing at the Village hall because I like the pretty outfits and being in shows. It means a lot to me, I don't get scared. I feel proud of myself.

Hegarty Promotion

A Day in the Life of a Family Solicitor Family solicitor Julia Weber, of Hegarty Solicitors, gives you a peek into the world of family law

for several years at a Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) and didn’t attend university until my children were in their teens, which I would highly recommend as life experience was a real asset learning family law. My work is never dull as every case is different, even if the facts seem similar – different circumstances, personalities, assets, number and ages of children. I often see clients at their most unhappy and vulnerable, so my CAB training is vital for asking the right questions and listening without judgment.

TV legal dramas can make lawyers laugh out loud or shout in frustration as a good story nearly always gets in the way of the facts. Reality TV programmes can accurately show the day-to-day life of many occupations but let’s face it – no one is likely to make a show featuring ‘high-street’ solicitors anytime soon. So, what’s it really like? For me personally, I can’t remember a time I wasn’t interested in law and justice. I volunteered

which never involves wigs or gowns contrary to client expectations. I try to keep cases out of court and negotiate a settlement if possible as our legal system can be very adversarial and will almost certainly increase conflict, take longer and cost more, none of which is good for families. I also dedicate time to keeping abreast of developments in family law and professional training; there are many rules and regulations governing solicitors and law firms that we must comply with. These rules set the ethical and professional standards expected of solicitors.

Usually my day starts with emails, post and phone messages, before prioritising cases. However, it’s very easy for my plans to be derailed by one email or a phone call concerning a situation that needs urgent attention – if a court application is necessary, then work on one file can take up a disproportionate amount of the day, too.

As I work in our open plan office in Oakham with colleagues from our Wills, Trusts and Probate department, when we close at 5.15pm I make the most of the quiet – no keyboards, phones, photocopier or noisy kettle – to catch up with clients by phone or email, which is often more convenient for them.

Face-to-face or telephone meetings with clients can last up to a couple of hours, depending on the nature of the case, and the work generated from it can involve setting up files, sending letters and drafting documents such as divorce petitions, financial settlements, pre- and post-nuptial agreements. I may also have to attend court,

Being a ‘high-street’ family solicitor may seem less glamourous than working in a large city firm (and is nothing like the TV drama The Split), ultimately the law is the same. It is demanding and sometimes stressful, but the work is so rewarding I can’t imagine doing anything else.

For further help and advice about family matters, contact Julia Weber at Hegarty Solicitors, Oakham on 01572 725772 or email julia.weber@hegarty.co.uk We also have family solicitors in Peterborough and Stamford. Thinking of entering education in 2020 but afraid life’s commitments will get in the way? Mum and mature student Cherrelle Melton shares her experience and why UCP might be the answer Technically, 30-year-old Cherrelle is a ‘mature’ student. Although many will argue 30 to still be young, the responsibility of a mortgage, a job and two young daughters means Cherrelle has commitments most first-time university goers aren’t even thinking about. After attempts to complete an online Foundation Degree in Early Learning were thwarted by life, Cherrelle turned to the University Centre Peterborough (UCP) for more hands-on learning and support. Two years later she’s graduated from her Foundation Degree in Early Years and Education, and is now embarking on a BA Hons in Education Studies and moving towards teacher training, all whilst balancing health, family and work. Here’s how she describes her experience: “I was so worried that managing a family, my health condition and working four days a week would be an impossible task, but it wasn’t – the support you receive from UCP is incredible. Being a small university centre, you’ve smaller class sizes with more

time from lecturers, and the student support team help you to overcome issues that get in the way of study and deadlines. “Due to the nature of my course, I had to work (paid or unpaid) within an educational or nursery setting; I currently work as a full-time primary teaching assistant. My employer is happy to release me for one day a week to be in university as we both benefit from my personal and professional development. I do lose a day’s pay per week but student finance can aid with loans to cover living costs; without the extra income from student finance I wouldn’t have been able to undertake my studies. Tuition fees can be eye-watering at first but financial support is available for this too and you don’t start to pay anything back until you’re earning £25k or more. Don’t let costs put you off attending university, it’s best to enquire about what help you may be entitled to. “I am not going to sugar coat it, though – it is hard work! studies, social activities and staying sane. It is totally achievable though. I call on family help with the girls when a deadline is looming and rely on breakfast clubs and after-school clubs so I can get to university on time. The beauty of the Early Years course, though, is that it is only one day a week so logistically it blends seamlessly with the day-to-day family routine. “On the first day I was ready to pack it in when I saw the reading list but then you realise everyone in the room feels the same. You all talk and help each other through. The lecturers support and listen to your meltdowns and you all then find yourself halfway through the year and wonder how you got there! “I am so glad I embarked on this journey at a ‘mature’ age. I have learnt so much about myself and so many new skills. I have a deeper understanding of my subject and it opens doors to new professional pathways. You will never regret going back to education,” shares Cherrelle.

Hard Fun at Soft Play

Tucked away in the heart of Peterborough is perhaps one of the region’s best soft play centres, Big Sky. Journalist Caroline Schmidt explores its assets as the go-to place for indoor fun

Ample, plentiful and fun are three words that come to mind about Big Sky, the soft play and party centre, in Peterborough. Easily accessed and situated within an industrial estate, the expanse of the facility is generous not just in dedicated space but its offerings. As with most soft play centres, there’s a large, highspec play frame for older children (4+), but it’s the added extras for no-added cost that make Big Sky exceptional. Throughout the giant play frame, there are educational touches that teach children about different countries as the play, an interactive piano, a football pitch, wiggle cars, electric go karts and a climbing wall that can be used at any age (so long as the child fits the harness). But it’s the under 5’s section that surpasses expectation. As most parents know, once a child turns two years old they’re often so capable and energetic that a modest baby & toddler area rarely contains them as they yearn for the bigger challenges being dominated by heavy-footed pre-teens. The toddler section,

however, at Big Sky is almost the same size as the larger play area with plenty to keep under 5s occupied and safely enclosed. Next to it is perhaps one of the largest and most-equipped interactive sensory areas in the region. Due to such envy from the over fives, plans are being discussed to create two new sensory rooms – a disco room and a quiet space – for older children designed to benefit those with sensory disorders. The latest addition to the play centre though is a vibrant, interactive Role Play Village featuring a corner shop, doctor’s surgery, vets, workshop and kitchen with functional lighting, microwave, fridge (without the elements) and even a backlight to review X-Rays. Parents can be served imaginary tea by their children, buy groceries and have their play pets groomed. It’s a place you can spend the day, or a few hours, where under 12s can go wild. With plenty of table space to breathe and great customer service it strikes the balance for parents who want a bit of fun with a

decent 'cup of Joe'. The menu is reasonably priced and diverse, with dairy-free milks and plenty of allergyfree options, costing mostly under £5 a meal. Big Sky is called a soft play and party centre for a reason, though, and its range of parties for all ages is worthy of acclaim. From superhero and piratethemed events to pizza and pottery parties, as well as the original soft play – but it’s the laser tag party, with exclusive access Monday – Thur after 6pm, that I’ve got sday earmarked for my seven1-3 years old: £5 .25 year-olds next shindig. 4-12 years old: £6.95 While Big Sky is open Adults : £1.75 all year, with the colder Friday – Sunday months upon us, we’ll certainly be planning a 1-3 years old: £5.95 repeat visit to expel 4-12 years old: £7.95 some energy. YOUNG SINGERS

Love singing? Join the collective voice of the Peterborough Young Singers to fill your Saturday mornings with fun and music The Peterborough Young Singers is an independent youth choir comprising a Junior and Senior section, with members aged seven to 21. Directed by Matt Smith, an experienced head of music, conductor and accompanist, this longstanding group shares his infectious enthusiasm for music making at all levels and repertoire. The choir meets on a Saturday morning during term-time at the CSK Church, Silver Hill, Hampton, Peterborough, PE7 8FF. Rehearsals begin at 9:30am, juniors finish at 10:45am and seniors finish at 11:30am. The choir has performed at a wide variety of events, from singing Christmas Carols at the local residential home to taking part in a nationwide performance of Messiah at The Royal Albert Hall.

The organisation is keen to welcome new members to its singing family and encourage anyone who has an interest in singing to drop by one Saturday morning for a trial. There will be no auditions or entry requirements, other than the enthusiasm to sing! As an independent organisation, originally established in the early 1990s, the Peterborough Young Singers are run by a dedicated team of parents who are focused on the children’s enjoyment. It aims to have at least one performance per term for the children to look forward to, in addition to social events that enable them to let loose and have fun together in a totally different environment, such as ice skating, laser force and summer BBQ’s!
