Stilton Twinning Association The Stilton & District Twinning Association arranged a very varied weekend to France this year, full of history, respect, emotion and enjoyment. Our first stop in France was the historic First World War museum at Peronne. The museum commemorates much of what went on in WW1, particularly at the Battle of the Somme. It is a moving museum to visit and visitors move around in respectful silence. On the Sunday we visited the Thiepval Memorial the 72,195 Lost Lives of the Somme. i.e. those missing and never found!! Whilst there were found the name of Private Thomas James Wright. A Stiltonian who died on 26 September 1916 aged 26. He lived

The fun part of the weekend was spent in the ancient city of Amiens, eating alongside the River Somme, visiting the Cathedral and its night time light show spectacular, wandering the market, boating along the Somme floodplain, called The Hortillonnage, amongst gardens, horticulture and
It was a great weekend, good company, good food, good hotel, brand new coach, much fun and much to do. The Twinning Association will decide on the 2015 visit in September.

We had no speaker in July as it was our produce show, many of our members found time to enter categories that ranged from pie making and wildlife photos to poems on our 65th birthday. Jenny Dickman took the prize for “best in show” and the overall prize for the most points on the night, can anyone stop the jubilant Jenny. Two of our members also produce a short quiz on famous 65 year olds, a very good night. We are also knitting squares for blankets, for Oxfam, Peterborough streets and Kenyan children, our next knit and natter morning will be at the pub in Holme on Wednesday 30th July at 10.30am, all welcome or knit at home 30 stitches with 4ply wool and drop it into the pub that morning or at our next meeting. Our next meeting is on Thursday 7th August, 7.30pm at the village hall; our speaker is Jane Ryan talking on “friends of Peterborough prison” all welcome In June members and visitors were entertained by Craig Bewick, an auctioneer, who gave us lots of information on our various ‘treasures’ which we took along. Instead of a meeting in July several members visited John Clare’s cottage followed by a cream tea.

An exciting new running event is coming to Oundle this September. Called The Oundle Magnificent Ten, the 10-kilometre (6.2 mile) race is a multi-terrain event, starting and finishing in the beautiful grounds of National Trust property, Lyveden New Bield. Taking place on Sunday 28th September, competitors can expect to run through meadows, along woodland paths, cross-country trails and farm tracks making a refreshing change from road running.
Outlaw Events, the team behind the race are hoping that if the race proves popular it will become an annual fixture in the running calendar. “Competitors can expect a lot from this race; a great course, a t-shirt for all finishers, refreshments on sale from the National Trust café, plus the opportunity to explore Lyveden and all it has to offer. Not only that but Peterborough based Physiotherapists, Ultimate Performance Lifestyle will be on hand to offer pre and post event physio advice for runners”.
The race is a first for Lyveden as Operations Manager, Claire Barrett explains; “We are really proud to be supporting this local event, as it provides an alternative way for visitors to experience all that Lyveden has to offer. As each runner heads towards the finish line, they will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the garden lodge at Lyveden, so it will be an amazing way to finish the race”
Places are limited so they would urge anyone interested to enter early to avoid disappointment.
Entries can be made online at www.digitaldouble.me/outlaw/

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue What lovely weather we have seen across Cambridgeshire – and long may it continue! Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service hopes you have all been staying fire safe with your latest outdoor activities, but just in case, here are our firefighters’ top tips:

Great Fen, Great Fun The Great Fen is an ideal place for a short walk through ponds, reedbeds, meadows and trees, with plenty of wildlife and fen heritage to explore. Take some time out this summer, bring a picnic and enjoy the wonders of the Fens. In the last issue I told you about New Decoy, this month let take a closer look The Wildlife Trust Countryside Centre at Ramsey Heights and the events taking place over the summer. The Countryside Centre is a wonderful place to explore the inter-connected worlds of plants, animals and fenland heritage. The indoor centre is converted Victorian brickworks, with the fascinating brick kiln still visible through windows. You can touch and feel many of the ancient fens and wildlife finds on display. The surrounding nature reserve is free to visit at any time, throughout the year. This August we have planned some exciting drop-in ‘Wildlife Wednesdays Events’ in a super setting for families. Come and explore the natural world of the Fens and the amazing wildlife living within it and even take some time to create your own wildlife inspired masterpieces to take home! You will have the chance to get up close and personal with birds of prey with our special guests: the Hawk and Owl Trust, and discover how we can find out what they eat. Plus imagine shrinking yourself down to the size of a bee and explore the amazing world of all the tiny insects that help to create the beautiful habitats we see around us. Also discover more about the wetlands and visit the amazing creatures that lurk in and out the water or use nature as your inspiration and see how creative you can be with just a few sticks as your starting point.

Theft of catalytic converters doubles in the last 3 years
Across the UK, thefts of catalytic converters from motor vehicles have more than doubled over the past three years and local reports of this type of crime continue to rise. Motorists can be left with repair bills of thousands of pounds. Thieves are ripping out the devices because they contain precious metals such as platinum and palladium. The global rise in the price of platinum has fuelled this illegal trade. Catalytic converters reduce poisonous gases from the vehicle’s exhaust system and legislation introduced in 1993 required all cars (J reg onwards) to have one. Although it is not illegal if you don’t have one, be aware that you would fail your MOT without. Further legislation that came into force on 1 October 2013 banned cash payments for scrap metal with the aim of making it easier to trace people selling stolen metal, but one of the emerging problems identified is the direct export whereby they are being exported in containers to emerging economies where they are either reused or broken down there.
How can you prevent theft? •
Catalytic converters can be uniquely marked in acid with a serial number
•
Motorists are advised to keep their cars in garages or park in well-lit areas
•
Most converters are bolted on - but they can be welded, which makes them harder to remove
•
Fleet owners are advised to obstruct access to high vehicles by parking cars with lower ground clearance round them
•
CCTV cameras should also be installed and warning notices posted up nearby
For many different reasons, you might be looking at the option of counselling to help you through a difficult time. The practice is in a private, quiet and discreet location so offers a safe and confidential place to talk.

Royal British Legion needs you! The RBL was founded by British veterans after World War 1 and a century on, those serving in the Armed Forces, veterans and their families can still obtain help when needed. Yaxley & District Branch was founded on 4 February 1926, and serves the villages of Yaxley, Farcet, Stilton, Folksworth, & Norman Cross and is conveniently adjacent to the Hamptons. The Branch currently has over 300 members, but those active are fewer than ten, so some hold more than one office. The RBL Yaxley Social Club Ltd is a separate entity sponsored by the RBL through the Branch. A Branch is required to elect Officers and Committee at the AGM held each November. The Officers are: President, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Membership Secretary, Welfare Secretary, Treasurer, Standard Bearer, Deputy Standard Bearer, and Poppy Appeal Organiser. In addition, there should be 7 Committee Members, so currently there are insufficient active members to fill the offices meaning some hold more than one in order to keep the Branch viable. All Officers and Committee members are either retired or disabled, and soon may not be available either through ill health or passing to the Great Muster. Yaxley Branch are rapidly approaching a critical time in their history approaching its centenary. We are appealing to current RBL members or any member of the public who may be ex-service, family of ex-services, or have an interest in the welfare of the Armed Forces, veterans, and dependants, to help us to run the Branch. We need to replace our Deputy Standard Bearer and Treasurer at the AGM, and there may be others. Without people prepared to run the Branch, it may be necessary to call an Emergency General Meeting to decide its viability or disbandment. If forced to close through lack of interest, it begs the questions of: who will organise the Poppy Appeal, the Remembrance Parade and service in St Peter’s Church; and who will represent the ex-service personnel in our community? If the Yaxley Branch is to continue to exist, we urgently need help to ease the burden of our active members. Training courses for most offices can be arranged for any interested person. Will you accept the challenge as service personnel accepted the challenges in their lives to guarantee the freedoms we all take for granted nowadays? If you can to help, please come to one of our monthly meetings on the 3rd Thursday at 8pm in the RBL Club, 210 Broadway, Yaxley, where you can be assured of a warm welcome.
Fund raising fete Yaxley Public Hall, Back Lane, (a former World War I Officer’s Mess Hut), is holding a fund raising fete on Sunday, 7th September from 10am-4pm. Stands are available for hire @ £10. Displays include; Talking Dogs, Ju-Jitsu, Table Tennis Club, Norman Cross Crusaders, Majorettes, Belly Dancing, local fire station engine and police vehicle.

Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club A (Tony) Casbon At last; some weather that bowls is all about, perfect for both players and the Green, the Green with the addition of lots of hard work mainly by Norman and Les is in tip top condition. And so to business. A come back in the final ends saw our boys poised for victory holding the winning shot with one wood left to play. This time however, it was bowled with complete accuracy by the opposition, so ending our hopes of progressing further. Fortunately both our ladies and gents still have plenty of chances to reach the finals, with no less than six individuals and teams already playing at semi –final level. A warm welcome to our new members. Beryl Bates, Mick Fulcher, Max James Tony and Rosemary Smith, Trevor Woods, Peter Hannah and of course it is great to see Ringo Starr back amongst us. We are not quite up to the ideal number of members to meet our many commitments, plenty of season left so feel free to come and have a look! The Oundle Challenge Cup. Wow! What a truly amazing night as mums and children walked 5k around the streets of Yaxley, all clad in pink, raising money for Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall and Cancer Research. The Rac4Jen was organized by our group of class mums in memory of our dear friend Jen Marriott, who sadly lost her brave battle with cancer last summer. All of our children are in the same Barn Owls class at Fourfields Community Primary School.
“Jen, we haven’t forgotten you and never will. We hope you enjoyed watching us walking through the village - it was all for you chick!”
We lost count of the number of walkers at around 120! Online we have raised £1060 (and rising!), the buckets in the pub contained over £160, and we know of at least another £250 on paper sponsor forms yet to be collected. The money keeps coming in! What a fantastic village we live in - your generosity is fantastic and we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. Also, a big thank you to The Three Horseshoes - we kind of took over your pub!! And another huge thank you to Clark Howe, our official photographer how did you keep appearing ahead of us? The Barn Owls class mums had a separate collection which was given to Jen’s husband and family for her Memorial Fund.

Chuch News St Peter’s
Ingrid and I recently enjoyed a week’s holiday in Northumberland. We had a really relaxing time in some beautiful scenery. We had amazing weather and found an excellent Indian restaurant! We also did a bit of sightseeing. We visited a Roman fort and village called Vindolanda. The remains of the buildings in the town were impressive on their own. However, due to the conditions in the soil there (there is no oxygen in the soil) there were an incredible number of well preserved artefacts. These included leather shoes, clothing, beautiful jewellery and even some fragments of letters written to other members of the community. It was really possible to get a good idea of how the people there lived. A couple of days later we visited Lindisfarne also known as Holy Island. This island is only accessible at low tide and is otherwise cut off from the mainland. This is the location chosen by St Aidan for his base when he came over from Ireland. From this base St Aidan and his monks introduced Christianity to the north of Britain (and possibly beyond). In their different ways, the villagers and soldiers of Vindolanda and St Aidan and his monks have left clear legacies which we can now enjoy. What legacy are we leaving for future generations – both as individuals and as community? A frequent question on chat shows is “how would you like to be remembered?” How would you answer that question? How would the people of Yaxley or the place where you live answer it? I have no desire to become a Saint (which is probably just as well!!). However, I do hope that I and St Peter’s will be remembered for spreading the love of Jesus Christ in our communities and beyond. John tells us that God so loved the world that he sent his only Son Jesus Christ so that all who believe in him would have eternal life. May you know God’s love for you and receive everlasting life. We are running a “Cops and Robbers” Holiday Club at William de Yaxley School from August 26th to 29th. This is for primary school aged children. For further information please visit our website or contact me. As always, you are all welcome to join us at any of our services at St Peter’s. Details on our website – www.saintpeters.co.uk or from me (contact details below).
Yaxley Methodist Chapel Did you know we are the drop of point for the Peterborough Foodbank? Sunday services and Junior Church begin at 10.30 am. Communion Service is on 10th August. Coffee morning with homemade cakes is on 9th August from 10 am.
With my prayers and best wishes.

Common law marriage
truth or myth?
Today many couples choose to live together before marriage and sometimes they never marry. Many people believe in a “Common law marriage” – but it is a myth.
Couples who live together do not acquire the same rights and legal responsibilities towards each other as those couples that are married. Difficulties can arise if cohabiting couples later separate as there is no automatic right to be supported or housed by the other – even if this was the case during the relationship. There is no law to rely on to obtain financial support from an ex-partner (except for the children). These difficulties can be avoided by preparing a Living Together Agreement setting out what the assets were when the couple met and how they intend these and any future assets to be divided if they separate. Anyone thinking of cohabiting or already cohabiting should obtain legal advice. Equally those thinking of marriage should consider a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. Abby Smith of Woolley & Co Solicitors always approaches matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting couples to reach ax swift, amicable agreement. For any Family Law queries please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you. Contact me now:

Doctors This month Dr. Alison Graham and Dr. Sharon Brackenbury tell you a little bit about their interests and specialities.
Dr. Alison Graham I graduated from Newcastle in 1989 and have worked at Yaxley since 1993, firstly as Dr Grant’s registrar! I love the variety that being a GP brings but I am especially fascinated by mental health issues and how the brain operates to either help us or limit us. I have done a lot of further training in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) which I find very useful both at work and home! I have 3 children aged 13, 10 and 6 who take up a lot of my time away from the surgery. My husband Alan is self-employed and works in property (buying, selling, renovating and letting) and he works from home which is good for our family’s work/life balance. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, going on days out, trying to keep fit, travelling and have a particular love for all things Italian.

Taxation
Question: I rent out an unfurnished property and I have been told I cannot claim tax relief on the cost for the replacement of a faulty fridge? Answer: Following the withdrawal of a tax concession from April 2013, you are unable to claim tax relief for the replacement of defective, free-standing white goods in unfurnished properties. However, if the fridge is incorporated into a fitted kitchen, any replacement of defective white goods will be allowed as a repair. This applies if the white goods are only part of the overall fitted kitchen, whereas a free standing fridge is an item in its own right. Replacement of white goods in furnished properties continues to be covered by the annual 10% “wear and tear allowance”.
Tax Tips
Many employers pay their employees a monthly car allowance to compensate them for the business use of their private vehicles. In most cases this car allowance is treated as remuneration and is subject to PAYE and National Insurance deductions. Additionally, employers may also pay a nominal amount per mile as a contribution to fuel costs. Employers are entitled to pay their employees a tax free mileage allowance for the business use of their private vehicles. The rates are: 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles in any tax year, and 25p per mile for any additional use. In a recently decided case, an employer that paid less than the above rates, was allowed to deduct the difference between the actual rate paid and tax free rates, from the monthly car allowance, before working out any employer’s or employee’s N.I..C.’s due on the monthly car allowance. If the amount being paid for business use of fuel is nominal, this can make quite a difference to National Insurance Contributions that are due. Employers reading this article, in certain circumstances, may be able to claim refunds for overpayment of past NIC deducted from car allowance payments. However, it should be noted that in the decided case mentioned above, the allowance was only paid to employees travelling more than 2,500 business miles each year though the mileage rate they received was correspondingly reduced to 12p per mile from 40p. It was thus aimed at compensating those incurring additional costs for using their cars substantially for business purposes.
Dates to remember 1 August 2014 - Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 31 October 2013. 19 August 2014 - PAYE and NIC deductions due for month ended 5 August 2014. (If you pay your tax electronically the due date is 22 August 2014.) 19 August 2014 - Filing deadline for the CIS300 monthly return for the month ended 5 August 2014. 19 August 2014 – Due date for CIS tax deducted for the month ended 5 August 2014.

Stanground Academy A group of students from the Stanground Academy have taken to the water and are learning to sail. The students from Years’ Seven, Eight and Nine were all total novices at the start of the lessons; some had never even been in a boat before. Now five weeks into their lessons they are all confidently taking boats out onto Grafham Water and more than capable of navigating their way around the large reservoir. Danielle, a Year Seven student, says “I had never been in a boat before but I enjoyed going with my friends and learning new skills”. Starting off in small Fun Boats the students were taught the basic skills of setting the sails and how to steer the boats. Danielle explains the rhyme they were taught to make sure the sails are correctly set “A flappy sail is unhappy, a tight sail is right”. Having mastered the basics the students have moved onto more complicated skills and are now capable of setting up their boats, launching them and packing them away after the lessons without help from the instructors. They have also learnt what to do when their boat capsizes; some of the students have had a practical experience of this! But even getting wet has failed to dampen their enthusiasm. Danielle tells of an especially exciting incident “We crashed into another boat and our boat tipped over, we both fell in but with the help of the other two students we got our boat back the right way up, climbed in and sailed it back to the shore!”Whilst this might sound dangerous the students are closely supervised by instructors in a safety boat and wear life preservers whilst on the water. Over the next few lessons the students will move out of the Fun Boats and into Toppers. These are proper sailing dinghies and are a level up from the simple and “unsinkable” Fun Boats. This is a challenge that they are looking forward to. Sailing lessons are one of a range of extra-curricular activities available to students at the Stanground Academy as Danielle says “it’s fun to learn new stuff and be out of the classroom, it’s good to be outside with my friends”.

Folksworth Preschool Folksworth Preschool has had a very successful village fete and would like to thank everyone involved. A huge thank you also to Peppa Pig. The last half term has been spent transitioning into new schools and preparing our leavers for “big school”. A few great things have happened over the last half term. Folksworth Preschool was able to lend St Neots Playgroup our Peppa Pig when theirs was destroyed in Customs. We were also able to reunite a baby wood pigeon with its owners when it popped into our playground to say hello. He had fallen out of a tree as a tiny baby and adopted by a couple living on a farm in Coddington yet had somehow made his way to us to say hello and play on the top of our shed. The children loved petting him and he loved trying to nibble everyone’s fingers but we are pleased to be able to report that he has been returned to his home on the farm. After an emotional goodbye to our school leavers we look forward to welcoming our remaining children back to Preschool on Friday 5th September.

William De Yaxley At the end of the summer term eight children from Year 6 represented the school at the annual DT (design and technology) Challenge at Sawtry Village College. There were seven schools competing this year and the theme was World War 1. The children spent time preparing for the day by learning about the Great War and assembling image boards to take with them. On the day, the children split into four teams, showingoff their talents, or acquiring new skills in; cookery, textiles, woodworking and graphic design. They were really pleased with all their efforts and finished a very credible 3rd place – well done to them!
The end of this term has seen farewells for two long standing and respected members of staff; Mrs Janet Rossin, our Administrator, and Mrs Dawn Smith, one of our most experienced Teaching Assistants. I’m sure many of our readers will know them and they shall be remembered fondly by both children and staff.
We are always proud of our sporty children, especially so this year as our team of elite athletes competed at the A1 Sports Day. We were thrilled to come 1st (for the 5thconsecutive year). Our children were a credit not only in the sporting arena, but also they were judged to be the best in terms of sporting behaviour towards the other teams and competitors too
We would like to thank them all and send them our best wishes for the future.
We also say goodbye to our Year 4 Class Teachers Mrs Charlton and Mrs Houghton and also Mrs Wells from Year 5 who have all taught at the school for a number of years. Mr Bob Higgs, our former Caretaker also left his role as Lunchtime Supervisor.
We would also like to send all our Year 6 children our best wishes as they move to their new secondary school. We hope that all our children and staff have an enjoyable and safe summer break.
Holme Church of England Primary School What a fantastic term it has been for Holme School and to complete our Inspire topic we organised for Etienne Stott and Tim Bailey, the 2012 Olympic Gold, slalom canoeists, to visit the school and inspire our children about achieving your dreams. They brought their gold medals along for the children to touch and give the school some good luck for the small schools A1 sports day the following day which we won!

Holme Preschool As we reach the end of term before our summer break we have been enjoying a variety of activities with the children to provide them with different experiences. These have included exploring the local area, we have walked round the village, watching the wildlife, finding bugs and visiting the church. At the Preschool we have enjoyed making volcanos and watching them explode when mixing vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. We have also had the wooden climbing frames out and talked about safety and the best ways of climb. The final couple of weeks will be an opportunity for the children to do what they enjoy most whether it’s certain toys, playing games and of course the messy play with water, the sand pit and the mud kitchen!
Yaxley Infant School The children have been very busy this term at Yaxley Infant School, they have all been working hard on the whole school theme of Healthy body, happy body showing the ‘Evil Baron Von Burger’ the error of his ways! The theme’s exciting ending involved the children and parents having a healthy life styles week, filled with opportunities to showcase their learning. This started with a day of healthy activities on the Monday and on the Thursday we had an interclass games competition (I am sure most of the village heard us, as the cheering and shouting was certainly very enthusiastic). On the Friday a whole school sports day ended the week, which was fantastic time. The summer term is always a busy and happy one in which we welcome lots of new families to our foundation stage classes for September. We love watching the children grow in confidence with each visit and we look forward to seeing them in September. It is also a sad time when we say goodbye to our oldest children in Year Two, who will be moving onto pastures new. We would like to wish them well at their new schools and thank their families for being such wonderful partners over the last three years.

Fourfields
Stilton C of E Primary School We’ve had a wonderful summer term at Stilton C of E Primary School. Children in Rabbit, Badger and Hedgehog classes have been learning all about Stilton. Using maps, they have been walking around the village to identify the different buildings. The children also went on a walk to Folksworth Park to practice their landscape drawing. They also managed to find some time to use the playground! Badger and Hedgehog class have also been busy making their own bread, pizza or cookies. The children created their own recipe, thinking about how their product is unique. The children also designed the packaging for their product by making cardboard nets and then decorating them. We have rounded off our summer term with our annual performances, leavers church service and leavers assembly, where the children reflected on their time at Stilton. We wish all our leavers lots of success and happiness at their new schools.

I joined Fourfields Primary School in September of last year so can’t really call myself the ‘new’ Head Teacher especially as I have felt very welcomed and supported by the community and particularly amongst my own school parents and staff. We have had an extremely eventful year in school, which I suppose is to be expected with a change of leadership but it has been exciting and full of wonderful experiences for the children. In terms of academic achievement our children this year have made outstanding progress which we are rightly extremely proud of. We have developed a new and innovative way of planning our lessons and delivering them to our pupils which has meant that staff from other schools now come to learn from us and learning is moving forward a pace! We have been awarded the highest accolade a school can have from the RHS for our garden and after a 2 day assessment have also been awarded the Inclusion Quality Mark for the way in which we ensure all members of our school community are valued and developed. Last month saw the inaugural Farmer’s Market at Fourfields; an exciting afternoon was spent tasting different food from local producers as well as preparing and making our own items to sell. It has been an action packed year and we look forward to another- just as fun! Sue Blyth, Headteacher at Fourfields

Peterborough is on an exciting challenge to create the UK’s Environment Capital delivering truly sustainable growth and as part of this challenge recognises the need to promote effective travel and to reduce the need to travel by car and promote a cleaner, greener and healthier city. also using cars in greener ways whether it be through car sharing or by using an electric car.
If everyone on Earth lived as the average Peterborian, British or European citizen does, we would need three planets’ worth of resource to sustain us. This mean, on average, each of us is using too much of the world’s resource to produce what we need to live.
As part of this, Travelchoice are hosting a number of events throughout the month of August which promote sustainable travel and the benefits it can have on us both as individuals and as a community.
The Environmental Capital Action Plan was adopted in 2014, it provides a vision and aims for how the Environment Capital will be delivered. The plan is broken down into 10 areas, each containing a vision to 2050 and interim targets to 2016 of which sustainable travel is one of these. Peterborough has the potential to be a truly sustainable city which has a thriving local economy, strong communities and a sustainable way of life where the residents are healthy, happy and prosperous and where the environment is clean, enjoyable and safe for all use. Travelchoice recognises the importance of sustainable development maximising the environmental, social and economic benefits of different transport modes. It’s not just a case of going from one place to another, it’s about discovering that Peterborough has more to offer than what you can see from the road and ultimately creating a sustainable city which visitors and residents of Peterborough can continue to enjoy for years to come.
Envitonment
Travelchoice Environment Update
The weeks then become divided into specific transportation weeks to highlight the benefits of each method.
Party in the Park 2nd August Travelchoice aims are simple and are to encourage sustainable travel wherever possible and to reduce the need to travel by car by achieving the following: • Improve the quality of life and transport opportunities in the City • Reduce the cities’ impact on climate change • Enhance safety and security for all the citizens of Peterborough • Support the economic growth within the city Travelchoice is by no means ‘anti-car’, we just want to let people know there is an alternative to the car which can be cheaper, quicker and healthier for all involved. We advocate people walking, cycling and using transport but
This year it will be bigger and better than last year’s event, including:
• Family fun fair • Hover Cars • Pedal powered music stage with live music acts all day • Inflatable Maze • PlayBus • Rollapaluza • Test track for assorted bikes • BBQ • Smoothie Bike

Yoga Birth After the birth of her third child in 2004 Sharon Budworth decided to immerse herself in the world of birth and babies. Sharon trained as a Birth and Postnatal Doula and has attended over 30 births to date. In 2005 she embarked on a wonderful journey with YogaBirth and in 2007 after qualifying as a YogaBirth Teacher she began teaching a regular weekly class in Cambridge, St Ives and Peterborough. YogaBirth classes offer a safe, effective and integrated form of yoga, carefully adapted for you to practice from fourteen weeks of pregnancy up to the birth of your baby. Our classes are infused with preparation for labour and birth, incorporating intelligent, gravity-assisting positions and movements. These provide great comfort, keep the baby well-oxygenated, and potentially make birth easier, faster and uncomplicated. The breathing you will learn in class is specifically designed for labour and birth, which we call hypnobreathing. After each class we chat over tea, and often mothers return to introduce their new babies and to share and celebrate their birth experiences. Many longlasting friendships begin at YogaBirth classes. Sharon is starting a “new” class in Yaxley. Thursdays 7.00pm – 9.00pm please visit www.yogabirthcambridge.co.uk for more information. Some feedback from my classes: “It was so lovely to come back to class and see you again, you’ve had such an impact on not only my life but the beginning of my babies lives, I’ll always be very grateful. (L. Mum of four, 3 Yogabirth babies!)” “It was the most relaxing time I had at Sharon’s yoga class during my pregnancy. I liked the time after class too as Sharon gave us more knowledge about birth. It was very useful. (J, Cambridge)” “I attended Yoga Birth during both my 2 pregnancies. Yoga Birth helped me understand the stages of labour so I wasn’t shocked or surprised by what happened. It helped me to understand what I could do to help myself during the labour. And when I had a very quick labour with my second child and didn’t have time to get to the midwife unit as planned, it helped me to stay calm and give birth at home with a paramedic present who had only attended one birth previously. Yaxley FC It’s been a busy few days for Yaxley FC with a new committee being formed on Thursday, the first pre-season friendly on Friday and a mass of cyclists heading out from the ground for the Tour de France in Cambridge.
“
it’s been pretty hectic, but that’s how we like it.” President Jeff Lenton
The AGM was very productive in helping us begin to form a new committee that will make us even more efficient in delivering football for all ages across our community. I want to welcome Gary Warman and Dee Walker as Chairman and Vice Chairman. Both are already key members of the clubs structure and know how we work. Chris Dann joins as General Secretary and we are very pleased about that.” The first pre-season friendly was against Dunstable Town of the Southern Premier League the following evening. Manager Brett Whaley told us “they were a very good side who expect to be challenging to get into the Football Conference at the end of the season.” Pre-season is all about getting ready for

key league matches and the games that always attract big crowds from the village, the FA Cup.
Whaley added “this year we have a massive Huntingdonshire derby game against Godmanchester Rovers on 16/08/2014. I have seen the disappointment on the fans faces after some of our recent FA Cup defeats and the lads and I would love to put that right and put Yaxley on the map. We will be giving it our all, so please come on down and cheer us on”.
The final part of the long weekend of activity was the joint venture with Yaxley Riders heading out from In2itive Park over the Cambridge for the 3rd stage of the Tour de France. The riders headed to a base in Cambridge before watching the race go by. They then cycled back before some food and drinks at the ground watching Marcel Kittel win the stage on the big screen.

Pets
SG
YOUR PETS IN HOT English weather might be notoriously unpredictable but we can still enjoy some very hot weather here in England. While we’re all soaking up the sun and indulging in our ice creams, we urge you to consider your pets. With their fur coat, an animal’s cooling system is not as efficient as ours and they can quickly become overheated and dehydrated. They are highly susceptible to heatstroke - a rise in body temperature which can cause organ damage, and failure, which sadly can prove fatal. Temperatures can rise quickly, especially in cars and conservatories, when the weather is hot and humid (even when it’s cloudy). Signs for heatstroke include increased panting or open mouth breathing, disorientation, anxiety, pacing, excessive or thick saliva, collapse or even loss of consciousness. If your pet shows these signs move them immediately to a cool shady area and cover them in a towel soaked in cold water, and call your vet. Heatstroke isn’t the only danger for our pets in the hot weather. With warmer temperatures come more flies and these can be a cause a big problem to our outdoor pets. Rabbits are particularly at risk of “flystrike”, which is when a fly lays its eggs on an animal and the maggots that hatch cause damage to the animal’s skin and tissue (which can happen within 30 minutes of contact with the fly). Check your outdoor pets daily for signs of flies and their eggs.

Pets
WEATHER Heatstroke can be easily avoided by taking simple precautions. • NEVER leave your pet in the car or shut in a conservatory - even with the windows open, the temperature will still rise rapidly •
Always allow access to cool shady areas – don’t forget your outside animals, make sure hutches and pens have some shade!
• Provide plenty of fresh, cool water (not ice water) • Avoid over-exertion – take your dog for a walk in the cooler early morning or late evening As Brits we’re not very good at applying sun cream to ourselves in the sunshine never mind our pets. Now it may sound silly to apply sun cream to our animals but their skin is just as sensitive. White pets and exposed pink skin on ears and noses are most at risk of sunburn and we all know how uncomfortable it can be. If you are concerned about heatstroke, flystrike or extreme sunburn with your pet, don’t hesitate to contact us at any of our surgeries.

I work in an IT department. I love electronic gadgets and technology. I’m even the editor of a computer gaming website. You’d think then I would be pretty adept at getting to grips with any new electronics that find their way into my house. Sadly, this has proved not to be the case. Recently, I bought a new mobile phone and, for reasons that I can no longer remember, thought it would be a good idea to buy a Windows phone. I now fully understand the blank look on my mum’s face when I tried to explain what Bluetooth was, and the confusion in my grandmothers voice when I tried to explain that if she was going to buy herself an iPad, it might be a good idea to get access to the internet first. I have literally no idea what I’m doing. In the unlikely event that you are not familiar with mobile phone platforms, here is a handy user guide. First, you have the iPhone and the IOS system, which essentially says to you ‘do everything this way, because we’ve made it look really pretty for you’. Second, you have Google’s system Android, which says ‘you can do literally anything you want! We know that you’ll set everything up how you like it once and never change it again, but you can do anything you want!’

Then, wrapped in a strait jacket in the corner dribbling and singing a song about a cow called Geoff, is the Windows phone. A specialist in being able to do none of the things that you could ever want to do, I spent a week missing calls as I was unable to answer them, not being notified of text messages, and apologising to people who had left me voicemails that had been committed to the ether. It’s so ridiculous, I was reduced to doing the most shameful thing a man can do – I had to get my wife to fix it for me. In summary; if you find yourself in need of a new mobile phone, take my advice and ask one of the experts. Not the people in the shops, they have even less idea than you do. Ask a teenager, and do exactly what they tell you. Don’t make the same mistake I did and think you know best, because you don’t.

Moving home could not be easier Step 1 Your home will sell much faster if it does not look cluttered. Make your home look more spacious and you will make it more attractive to potential buyers. Let’s start the moving process before you sell, and take the pressure of all the last minute work. We will deliver to your house, free of charge, one of our INBOX pods. It will sit on our trailer outside your home and you can pack it at your leisure, with all of those things you don’t need for a while, and any excess furniture you don’t need or use (but don’t want to lose).
Step 2 You padlock your pod and we collect it and store it for you in our secure indoor warehouse. If you need more, we can deliver more. Again, there is no charge for delivery or collection. You can have access your pod at any time whilst it is in our store and have as many pods as you need.
Step 3 Once you have exchanged, you can begin the house moving process gradually filling pods, in your own time and only leave essential items until the last minute. Easy! No stress! No Time pressures! No expensive removal companies! It could not be easier (or more cost effective).
You will only be charged for the time the pods are in storage. Prices start at £60 per month.
Step 4
• Delivery is free within a 30 mile radius of our warehouse in Yaxley, thereafter it is at £ 1.00 per mile. • We can store your pods for as long as you need us to.
We deliver your pods to your new home as you want them. Again, you can take your time and have them one at a time, when you want them.
