DEPARTURE...

Community News

Well, December is here and unfortunately this will be my final write up for the Yaxley Detachment Army Cadets. For some unknown reason apart from age alone, the powers that be at Brigade Headquarters have decreed that I am being compulsorily retired... it just does not make sense that after 32 years of running a very successful Detachment I am being cast out into the cold... I have tried to get the decision delayed but to no avail. Ageism rules!! Anyway, the Christmas Camp at Waterbeach was quite a successful weekend with the Junior Cadets spending time at RAF DUXFORD at the Royal Anglian Museum before returning to Waterbeach for a little more training, a Christmas Dinner served up by the adults (and if you saw some of the costumes worn by them I think the word”adult” would be used loosely) Great fun for all though, it always is. Lance Corporal MURPHY T came away from the weekend feeling happy with his well deserved promotion to Corporal and he’s about to find out that with the promotion comes more work and responsibility but he is capable of it. January will see the Cadets shivering again at the Folksworth “Frostbite” 15 run marshalling and handing out much needed drinks at the water points around the course, all part and parcel of their commitment to the community, something we at Yaxley look on as an important part of being in the ACF. The photo shows Sgt MURPHY C being served his Christmas

Editors Note

Dinner by Under Officer BAKER, who he will get to know a lot better when Mr BAKER takes over the reins as Detachment Commander with effect 1st January 2014. U/O BAKER started with me as a young Cadet at the Detachment where he worked his way up to Cadet Sgt Major before age (again) meant he had to leave. He came back as an adult instructor and is now awaiting his commissioning board, which on passing, will see him promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. I wish him all the luck in the world and I know he will be as happy at Yaxley as I’ve been, I just wish I could do it all over again. Nothing else will be changing, the Cadets will still be meeting on Thursday from 7-9pm at the Detachment, 12 years old and year 8 for new recruits. This time the phone number for any more information will be 07969009215 (Mr BAKER), the web is the same www.cambs-acf. So it’s goodbye from me... and hello from him. Thanks BW Hayward Lt Cambs ACF.

Thank you Brian for all your contributions Enjoy your retirement Brian x

HAPPY New Year! And why not make a New Year’s resolution to help keep you and your family fire safe this year.

The Annual General Meeting reported an interesting past year, we also said ‘goodbye and thank you’ to Irene Burnham as President and ‘hello and welcome’ to new President Pauline Brown.

Make sure you have a correctly fitted working smoke alarm on every floor of your house and test it weekly. Check older relatives and friends have a working smoke alarm and test theirs regularly. Make a fire plan so you and your family know what to do in case a fire breaks out in the home.

It was good to know that we had a good financial year, mainly due to the cake stall at the Yaxley Festival and we are looking forward to 2014 with confidence. We then had a talk about the Kurari School Project in Kenya. Jill Wandsworth has been supporting Wangari with fund raising, for education for her village children. Handbags, wonderful designs, made by the Kenyan villagers were on sale. Our next meeting is on the 9th January, 2014, 7.30 pm to be held at the LANCASTER CLUB, Main Street Yaxley.

Community News Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club AGM, as always changes our Officers are few and far between and the election is pretty seamless. John Thurston, after an extremely busy year as President of Peterborough and District will be leaving the Committee as will Hazel Bass. We are all relieved she will continue her sterling work on our Social Committee. Peter Ford along with Ex President Stella Dale take their places. It is particularly pleasing to see Peter as one of our newer members taking on this very responsible position. Bruce Saint, very deservedly will be our President in the coming Season along with his other major roles. Two major problems arose last year, it was very gratifying to see positive action plans are already in place and hopefully both will be behind us before the coming season. The printers of the Gazette have decided that they also will be having a holiday over Christmas so reports of our social events from now up to Christmas will not appear until February. Cecil Bradshaw Cup as is usually the case, we win the outdoor legs and Whittlesey the indoor. This year we managed to win on one rink indoor. Judy Ford and our two Andrew’s (Andrew Black and Andrew Cooper) playing in top form won very convincingly. Race Night Very well supported both by members and friends always one of the highlights of our winter socials all of which are about meeting up during the winter months. We wish all the good folk a Happy and Prosperous New Year and remember, if you want to join in our fun next season it is never too soon to give us ring. Chairman Graham 242322 or Secretary Kath 241967 will be happy to explain the very simple procedures involved.

Divorce or Separation can it ever be amicable and less expensive? Statistically January is the most likely month for any couple to separate – Christmas is out of the way, the children are back at school and finances are tight. Cracks in the relationship become more apparent. When a couple separate it is a very stressful and daunting time for everybody. It is not unusual to be unsure where to turn. You need expert, friendly and proactive advice but don’t know where to find it. I can help. I’ll provide a friendly ear to listen and the legal expertise to provide answers. When separating or divorcing, the most important issues to consider are the finances and matters relating to the children. These two issues cause the most upset and stress but obtaining expert legal advice can ease the pain. If handled well, divorce or separation does not have to be expensive or anger driven – many of my clients say that I provide a calm and collective approach, with quick results in a proactive, amicable and cost effective way. For any Family Law queries please contact me, Abby Smith, for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you, with competitive charging rates.

Community News The Queen knows more about Christmas then you or I We have heard recently that the Queen insists that the Christmas decorations at Sandringham stay up until she leaves at the beginning of February.

Secret Dealers Do you have a treasure lurking in your living room? The hit TV show “Secret Dealers” is returning to ITV and is on the hunt for people to take part. Turn your unwanted antiques into serious money, without even leaving the house!

Right and proper I say. So many things in the church year have 40 days in them. 40 days in Lent. 40 days between Easter and Ascension Day.

If you are having a party to celebrate 12th Night, how about joining one of the churches who hold a Candlemas Service on [or near] 2nd February.

So, why not 40 days between Christmas and Candlemas?

One such service will be held in St Giles Church, Holme at 4 pm on Sunday 2nd February. Any of you who have joined us in the past but have suffered from the cold will be surprised because since last year we have had new heating fitted, do come along and worship the Lord whilst sampling the opulence of a warm church.

Yes, Candlemas on 2nd February is the turning point from looking back to the birth of the Baby Jesus to looking forward to Good Friday and Easter.

Complete with a fresh look for the new series, Secret Dealers sees three rival antique dealers doing battle in private homes for items they can sell. The competing dealers tour the house inspecting everything of value. From jewellery, sideboards and children’s toys, to jumbled attics, and furniture; nothing is out of bounds to the dealers.

So, you see it truly is the end of the Christmas season not 12th night as we assume. That is the Feast of Epiphany, the arrival of the 3 Wise Men but Christmas goes on.

The owners are then faced with a bonanza of surprise valuations and cash offers on some of their most prized (or not so prized) possessions. They can either accept or reject the offers and the owners must then face the choice between sentimental attachment and the chance to make a fast buck. The dealers must use all their skill to sell the items and compete to make the most profit.

Recent events have included John Pilbeam, in November, who accompanied himself on guitar and banjo, singing songs from the 1900’s to the present time.

How to apply for Secret Dealers: We are now looking for people nationwide to take part, so if you think you have any quality antique items or collectables and want to cash them in then we would like to hear from you. Call us on: 0117 970 7674 or Email: secretdealers@rdftelevision.com

A talk on the benefits of Crystals used for healing was given by Lynne from the School of Unified Healing. Claires-cupcakes.org.uk provided some fabulous cup cakes. Mulled wine and mince pies, great raffle prizes and a one night B&B at the William Cecil in Stamford was auctioned. All the proceeds of product sales, crystal healing, raffle and refreshments raised £420 for GOSH CC. The reason behind the whole event was little Freja. Freja was born in July 2011. When she was 13 days old she was rushed to Great Ormond Street hospital because she has a rare and complex heart condition which suddenly deteriorated. She spent the following 17 months there. Miffy ward at GOSH specialise in Freja’s care, Freja will be returning to Great Ormond Street hospital for further open heart surgery in January 2014. Miffy ward will be using the money to improve their facilities for the children they look after on the ward. The children currently have to borrow sensory equipment from other wards; the money raised will enable them to buy their own. The ward can also buy high chairs for the children to use; this encourages meal time routines and gives them a bit of normality. Lastly, the cubicles the children spend most of their time in look very much like a hospital, it would be lovely to re decorate and have the cubicles feeling more homely and less like a hospital. It was a very successful evening. A big thank you to everyone who gave their support.

January can be a cold month with some very bright, sharp, crisp days and it is the time when wild birds need feeding. Birds are particularly appreciative of fat balls this time of the year and feeding the birds in your garden will not only reward you of seeing them have their young in the spring but will assist you by eating aphids and many plant damaging pests. Please ensure that they have access to plenty of fresh, clean water at all times. Check your plants that you have fleeced for winter protection to ensure that there is enough air movement in the centre of the plant or trees and that they are free from damaged leaf tissue and securely protected. Check all plant ties and stakes not forgetting the rabbit guards. During January, you can of course start to force Rhubarb, this is done by placing a container over the top of the crown with a little straw around the plant and then placing a container (a large up turned terracotta pot with a hole is ideal for this) and doing this will ensure an early harvest of tender Rhubarb stems. If the weather is good and the ground permits you can plant Raspberry canes and in the veg garden over the next month or two you can start to chit your new potatoes - this is easily done by placing your new potatoes in a container such as empty egg boxes which are ideal for this, place the seed potatoes uppermost in the container with the eyes at the top and then place them in a cool, airy, light, frost-free place. Now, a shrub worth mentioning this month which is not seen as often as it should be is a plant called a” Sarcococca “ this is also known as the “Christmas” or the “Sweet” box - they are an evergreen plant with glossy leaves and incredible small, sweet smelling flowers. They are reliable, easy to grow being ideal for a formal shrub bed or even planted in a container. It grows to about 5ft tall, spreads reasonably wide and flowering from December with tiny white scented flowers followed by small black berries. Sarcococca’s can cope with sun and shade so is an excellent garden plant. And remember... “Grass is just a flower bed in waiting and new gardeners learn by trowel and error” Have a good month in the garden and a very happy, successful gardening New Year!! Jim

Adam Paull - Partner Adam has been a successful valuer for the past 6 years and has been always strived to be as honest with his valuations and advice and over the many years vendors as well as buyers and investors have turned to him for advice and recommendations. Having recently joined the estate agent industry Robert has learnt a lot from his peers and an intense training programme and feels that he is the right man for the job. Robert has learnt a lot and the feedback we get from Vendors is that they feel that they are always involved from start to finish and his honesty is very refreshing says Claudio the manager.

GET FIT with Jason Welcome to my column, from where I aim to help people achieve their goals for health and fitness. It is a subject I am extremely passionate about and have dedicated my life to. Through many years of training in the gym I have been able to help people transform and develop their physiques through nutrition and training advice. Being a fully qualified advanced nutritionist specialist I can develop plans to personally suit you in order to help you achieve your goals. This may not only just be about losing weight or building muscle, it may be about boosting selfconfidence and feeling better within yourself, something of which I struggled with during my teenage year’s growing up. Whilst being a personal trainer I am also a sponsored athlete and brand ambassador for NRG Fuel Sports Nutrition. My goal is to transform

people’s lives globally and bring confidence and well-being in a healthy environment. A recurring issue I have come across with many clients is having the time to train. I have always been a fan of HIIT training (high intensity interval training) and functional training. This involves short intensive workouts which improve athletic condition, metabolism and fat burning. Classes such as Metafit and circuit based training use combinations of bodyweight exercises such as burpees, squat jumps and squat thrusts which encourage the after burn effect. If your time is limited why not try fitting these exercises into your daily routine. Squat Jumps

this New Year at the Stilton Cheese Inn. Walking through the doors of the Stilton Cheese Inn, there is a fantastic ambience, fuelled by the excellent fireplace that really sets the tone of the restaurant. We were greeted by the welcoming and friendly owner Carlos, who seated us and recommended the specials to us. Taking a seat, it became clear that the restaurant had its quaint characteristics, including a brilliant and unusual foreign currency collection above the bar which was collected by the owner himself. Before we knew it, our starters had arrived. I had gone for the soup of the day – Stilton Cheese and Broccoli and Mum had gone for the Melon. The soup was perfect, a perfect temperature and a perfect mix – it was simply delicious. The melon was crispy and soft where it

needed to be and came with a bit of salad on the side, for those of you who like it like that. After teasing us with those starters, we really couldn’t wait for the mains, and that was good as we didn’t have to wait for long. Grilled swordfish steak and a whole grilled sea bass was placed in front of us – a recommendation I truly thank Carlos for making – followed by vegetables and new potatoes. The fish was perfectly cooked – it fell a part as you cut into it at all the right times – it was so soft and delicious and the vegetables were crisp and crunchy, top commendations to the chef! Overall the night was absolutely fantastic, from the welcoming friendliness of the owner to the wonderful delights of the cuisine, it’s definitely a restaurant that tops my list for 2014!

A home from home for the pampered pooch January 2014 sees PamPooch Guest House (PPGH) – a ‘home from home’ exclusively for the small pampered pooch, celebrate their 1st anniversary. Owner of PamPooch Guest House, Dawn Webster, says that she’s always loved and kept small dogs and set up the business to appeal to owners, like herself, who couldn’t leave their dogs in a kennel. “PPGH is an alternative” Dawn explains, “with VIPs (very important pooches) being cared for in my home. I thought like-minded owners would also be looking for a similar environment for their VIP when they go away; somewhere where they receive that personal attention with a good routine of walks, cuddles, play and feed time in a luxury environment”. Recently, PPGH took care of Sol who had never been away from home. Here are a few comments from her owner: “We hadn’t left Sol at all and had reservations to the point that we wouldn’t have gone on holiday. We were really surprised at the accommodation as it looked too good for dogs! There were no kennels, no cages, no mess and no dog odours! We were made very welcome, shown around and knew Sol would be looked after. How right we were! We were kept updated whilst we were away via email and Facebook with pictures & comments. The whole service truly exceeded our expectations.” Contact: Dawn Webster Email: dawn@pampoochgh.co.uk T: 01733 241413 | M:07889 210678 www.pampoochgh.co.uk

Pets

Happy New Year from all the staff at Cromwell Vets We all enjoyed our treats over the festive season, our pets included no doubt! As the trend for dieting starts in the New Year, don’t forget about your pet’s waistline too! It’s estimated that a staggering 60% of dogs and 35% of cats are overweight. This is mainly due to lack of exercise and overfeeding. Obesity holds the same danger to our pets as it does us. There is an increased risk of diseases such as arthritis, diabetes and cancer. The excess weight puts added strain on the animal’s body potentially leading to respiratory distress, high blood pressure and heart failure. Ultimately all these health complications sadly mean a decreased life expectancy. While some of our food is dangerous to our pets due to toxicity (chocolate being the main culprit), it is worth remembering that all human food will pile extra pounds on our pets.

Schools Stilton Primary School The whole school have recently taken part in our ‘Global Thinking Week’. The children learnt about other countries and cultures, including different festivals, food, music and dancing from around the world. We were also thinking about Christianity across the world. Each class learnt about a different type of Christian cross that is symbolic in other countries. Then we all had a go at creating our own crosses using different art techniques, which are now on display in school. To round off our week, each class took part in a circus skills workshop, where the children learnt how to juggle scarves, balls and clubs, spin plates, balance peacock feathers, ride fun wheels and walk on stilts. We have had a wonderful festive period at Stilton Primary School. Children in Owl, Robin and Otter classes performed a nativity play for their grown-ups, and children in Rabbit, Badger and Hedgehog classes performed in our annual carol concert. We rounded off our term with every child going to the Beauty and the Beast pantomime, followed by a Christmas party in school.

Stretton preschool Stretton preschool had a very busy and festive December which started with a bang by holding our Christmas Fayre. We were treated to a performance of Christmassy songs from the children in the headstart groups, such a proud moment seeing the children singing so beautifully on stage to a packed crowd! An amazing amount of money was raised which will go towards purchasing the equipment both sites have requested. It couldn’t have been done without the generosity of those who donated raffle prizes, held stalls or just came along to support us...THANK YOU! Another thank you must go to Tesco’s for donating items for us to sell, and also to Dobbies who kindly donated bulbs and pots for the children to decorate and plant their bulbs; these could be seen at our fayre. We do break for Christmas but for information and to contact us please visit our website www.stretton-pre-school.co.uk. Finally we would like to wish you all a Happy New Year.

Schools Folksworth Preschool Folksworth Preschool teamed up with Amazing Raise for a fundraising competition selling toilet paper. The prize for top fundraiser was a family ticket to see Joseph at the Broadway Theatre. Big thanks to all who participated and sold toilet roll. Congratulations to our little preschooler for selling so many. Preschool has been bustling away making decorations for the village hall for everyone to enjoy over the Christmas holidays (we thought we would help the elves as they were very busy leading up to Christmas). Our Santa float and pub night on 14th December was a huge success made all the more special by the guest appearances of Peppa Pig and Santa Claus himself. We all return after a lovely break ready to start working hard and preparing for big school. If you would like a space for your child, please contact Jade Smith on 07542172075 or news@folksworthpreschool.co.uk

Fourfields Last month saw the children celebrate Christmas with a Carol Service, three separate Christmas shows, a Christmas lunch, Christmas Fayre and class Christmas parties. In between, Year 6 hosted a World War II themed day where they ‘Dug for Victory’, experienced rations and dressed up as evacuees – each with a gas mask box made in class. Our Foundation Stage children went on a ‘Bear Hunt’ and on their way experienced snow, leaves, puddles and woods. Our Netball Team and Football Team represented the school and played in local leagues and we introduced many after school sports clubs which have proven popular. The new calendar year has started and this month the children will be celebrating a love of reading with a whole week based around Literacy. This will include a number of events such as visits to the library, visiting story tellers, a bedtime story evening, a book bingo and a theatre production involving three books and many songs. Please take a look at our gallery of photos on the school website to see how our Literacy Week went and to get a flavour of the other fun learning activities taking place at Fourfields.

Little Acorns Pre School and Day Nursery Little Acorns would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year. December was filled with lots of festive activities with the children making Christmas cards, snowmen and tree decorations to give to their families and friends. We also put our Christmas tree up, with lots of help from the children. The children put on a Christmas concert for their parents and families. They practised very hard with their songs and all enjoyed dressing in their costumes and dancing on the ‘big’ stage. The children were very excited to see Father Christmas at the Christmas party and had lots of fun dancing and eating party food!! We would like to thank all parents/guardians who helped with the play and the party; the children had a fabulous time.

Holme Church of England Primary School We are a small, church school situated in the heart of Holme village. We have four classes of mixed age groups and our current roll is 110 children. We are really looking forward to welcoming more children into our school for September 2014 when the new reception children come! Last term, we were very busy not only with our learning but also with difference projects around the school and in our community. One of these was raising money for the NSPCC to support all of the work they do in helping children. Each class did either a sponsored spellathon or sponsored shape sort and we raised a staggering £1,200! This was an amazing achievement and could not have been done without the support of the families of our school. As the new Head of Holme School, I am very proud of the children and families who together, make our school the wonderful place that it is. Mrs Allen Headteacher 26 26

William de Yaxley Junior School What are the two colours of the South African rugby team, and what is the number of degrees in a right angle multiplied by the number of French hens in the 12 days of Christmas? Just two examples of the questions faced by our Year 6 Quiz Team (Regan, Lauren, Adam and Tayla) last month when they competed in the A1 Schools Quiz. They came a well-deserved second out of nine schools – congratulations to them! Year 6 also received their badges for completing their Bikeability training course to teach them how to be safer cyclists when using the roads. They were praised for their good behaviour and not complaining about the damp weather! The weeks leading up to Christmas were a very busy and enjoyable time for the children and staff. We held a fundraising “Secret Santa” evening, where the children bought presents for their families and had the opportunity to ask Santa for a present or two…Children from the Craft Club and Rainbow Room particularly enjoyed making items to sell at the event such as; felt decorations, painted glass ornaments and colourful trees, aided by parent helpers Sarah Gee and Melissa Twydle. As we write early in December, the choir will be singing at St Peter’s Church as part of the Peterborough Choral Society evening. Year 4 practice enthusiastically for their entertaining production of “Hagbanes Doom” and our youngest children are going to perform the Nativity to the whole school, friends and family at St. Peters Church, during our annual Carol Service. You may have seen us walking along the pavements to the church as we do every year! It remains to say a hearty “Happy New Year” to you all from the children and staff at William de Yaxley

BLOG Who is the Yaxley Gazette Blogger? Drew Pontikis has been a Yaxley resident for the past 6 years, and has two young sons to keep him busy. He works as an Analyst in Orton Southgate, but dreams of becoming a writer.

The word on the street Congratulations! You’ve made it through the festive season! You’ve survived spending time with your family, spending all your money on gifts for people you don’t like enough to speak to in any month that isn’t December, and most importantly you made it through the work related festivities without photocopying parts of your body not intended to be put into print. But now you’re a bit deflated. It’s the New Year, but same old tedium. Not to worry though, your old buddy Drew is here with an easy reading guide to New Year’s resolutions to help you out of your funk and into the gym. •

Put down the fork! – Let’s be honest, you’re full to bursting after eating a whole farmyard’s worth of meat and animal produce in the past month. You’re struggling with the buttons on your work shirts now and when you look down, what you thought were your toes turned out to be the family cats flailing legs, having mistakenly got caught in your newly acquired blubber. Bin the sweets, pick up some celery, and feel superior to all those people you see getting out of breath queuing in Spar.

Ditch the car and stick it to the government – Petrol is now more expensive than unicorn tears, and let’s be honest you’re sick of the way everyone else drives. Buy yourself a bike and be part of the problem; if someone’s going to be causing massive traffic jams it may as well be you, and old David Cameron isn’t likely to add duty to Lucozade any time soon. Plus, you know you’ve always looked in lycra.

Jump start your career – You’re bored with sitting in an office all day, coming in to work to earn just enough money to be able to afford to go to work every day. It’s time to get into those upper echelons of management that you’ve always dreamed of; a world of golden handshakes and executive bathrooms. Buy yourself a nice tie, get a print of a motivational picture for your desk and start the smear campaign on the person whose job you REALLY want; I too have wondered why Karen in accounting keeps going back and forth to Colombia.

Register your bike As part of on-going crime prevention we are encouraging residence to register their bikes on the National Data Base. Just take a picture of your bike and the serial number then go to www.bikeregister.com to register. To increase the chance of returning your stolen bicycle act now, don’t leave it for later.

There you go – three easy steps to getting 2014 off with a bang. And besides, when February comes around and you’re back on the fags and chips, you’ll be out of the New Year lull anyway. 28 28

St Peter’s Church

Churches

As I write this Jonathan Trott, one of England’s cricketers, has just returned home from the tour of Australia with a stress related illness. I don’t know the details, but the verbal abuse which cricketers hurl at each other cannot have helped. One of England’s players was told to “expect a broken arm” (I’ve missed out a word or two from what was actually said!!) as he came out to bat. I rather suspect that the England players have plenty to say to their opponents as well. I’ll leave it to others to decide whether such verbal abuse has a valid part to play in cricket or any other sport. However, the words we speak to each other clearly have a huge impact on the way we feel and indeed on our health. When our children were young we attended a parenting course on which we were told that we should aim to give our children 10 pieces of praise for every criticism or negative message we needed to give them. A failure to do this can result in children having a very low level of self-worth. The principles apply to our relationships with adults as well. If we value our friends, our colleagues, our families etc we need to make sure that any criticism is offset by a larger amount of positive comment. In my view, the old saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me” is wrong. Words can cause significant damage, but well chosen words can give great encouragement and a sense of worth to our fellow humans. We have to be so careful with the words we use. Jesus was a gifted speaker and chose his words very carefully. As we start a new year let’s remember that Jesus told us that he came to earth so that all of us “may have life and have it abundantly”. If you would like to explore this abundant life to which Jesus invites us you might like to come along to the Alpha course which we will be starting on February 28th. Alpha looks at the basics of Christianity and is an opportunity for you to ask questions too. We will be running the course at both 9.30am and 7.30pm. Please feel free to come along to whichever time works best for you. If you would like further details please get in touch with me. May we all choose our words carefully throughout the coming year and use them to encourage and build each other up. With my prayers and best wishes for 2014. Money Matters

If you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdnco.co.uk and if of general interest, it will be published here!

Taxation: Question: I am employed – is it true that I can claim for expenses and set these against my PAYE income and obtain tax relief? Answer: An employee cannot claim tax relief for the cost of ‘ordinary commuting’, such as travel between home and a permanent workplace. As a general rule, a ‘permanent workplace’ is a place which the employee regularly attends in the performance of employment duties, which is not a temporary workplace. An employee can generally claim tax relief from their earnings for travel expenses and other expenses if certain conditions are satisfied. Care should be taken or professional advice obtained as HMRC will contest any claim, particularly if the claim is workplace based. Question: I am an employer so what do I have to do to ensure I am ready for Auto Enrolment (AE)? Answer: As employers, you should now all be aware of your responsibilities under AE with your staging dates for commencement of these arrangements either notified or shortly to be notified to you. Qualifying employees will need to be automatically enrolled into a suitable pension scheme with the option of opting-out of this arrangement if they so decide. Employers must make this scheme by the staging date applicable to them, or face penalties or worse! Following on from last month’s question regarding HMRC acting like “Big Brother”, HMRC now have new powers to request information from UK’s merchant acquirers – the companies that process card payment transactions. This will enable HMRC to data-mine information on all credit and debit card payments made over the last four years. It would seem likely that HMRC will use their Connect software to make connections within the data obtained that will forward investigations into taxpayers’ affairs.

The Lampshade Warehouse

CELEBRATES 25 YEARS

25 YEARS

We have come a long way from the days of a dome shaped, fringed shade shielding a 100watt bulb in the middle of the lounge, nowadays we are seeing sparkling crystal fittings, subtle ambient lighting from an incredible array of ceiling fittings, chandeliers, wall lights, floor lamps and table lamps. Here, in our 2,000 sq. ft. showroom in Westwood, we have hundreds of dierent items on show and most can be viewed, illuminated, at the flick of a switch. We stock products for every room in the house as well as an entire wall of outside lights. In our showroom we spend a lot of time talking to our customers in order to understand exactly their requirements and inevitably the conversation turns to economy, a subject close to all our hearts and purses. With the demise of incandescent bulbs we are now able to choose from 3 mainstream technologies; halogen, CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) or LED(light emitting diodes)if you find these a little baffling, don’t worry as we can both explain and demonstrate the pros and cons of each. For those customers who are unable to visit the showroom we will be up and running with a brand new website in the New Year and for those who can visit us we are going to welcome in the year with a massive clearance sale starting on Thursday 2nd January.
