Community News

Green Backyard My name is Maria and I have lived in Yaxley for over 30 years. 3 years ago I began volunteering at The Green Backyard in Peterborough. This is a vibrant community growing project run entirely by volunteers, who are passionate about sustainability and work hard to raise awareness regarding environmental issues. On 1st February, myself and Renny, who is the project co-ordinator, visited Yaxley library to run a willow-weaving event. Two people came along and although we were prepared for more, we do believe it’s about the quality not the quantity. Sure enough the first feedback from the two ladies was that one had always fancied a go at willow and the other said she’d been anticipating the session all month, since she’d first seen the poster in the library.

Our next planned visit will be at Yaxley festival on 18th May. If you or your local community would like to visit please contact us on 07523 939 424 or visit www.thegreenbackyard.com In no time at all they had each chosen a project selected from the many examples provided for their inspiration and both were picking the appropriate materials we had supplied from our willow beds. Two and a half hours later they had created a colourful duck sculpture and a handsome circular fruit basket. The atmosphere was calm and relaxed and both found the activity therapeutic. Both gave a donation to cover our expenses and were delighted to have experienced a little of this ancient craft.

As the newest member of the club, just 6 weeks, after moving back to Peterborough and having just been awarded the Terry Hollington award by the ABSP (Association of British Scrabble Players) for encouraging new players to join clubs, I am helping out with recruiting new members to our wondrous world of words. The Peterborough Club meets on a Monday Evening in the Millfield community centre on Lincoln road. All new members are guaranteed a very warm welcome. There is a wonderful social aspect to playing within a club and a great wealth of knowledge to be shared with you. The Rhythm of Life Exhibition Spring Exhibition 14th March – 30th April 2014 The Norman Cross Gallery welcomes the drummer of the legendary 70s Group Squeeze now with its founder Jools Holland’s and Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, musician and accomplished artist Gilson Lavisto, having his first solo exhibition at the gallery. The list of musical giants Gilson has worked with reads like a Who’s Who in the music business, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Sir Bob Geldof, Bono, BB King, Chuck Berry, Bryan Ferry, Noel Gallagher, to name but a few, as the list is endless. Many of the artists’ pictures he has painted will be on show for the exhibition.

Dog Walkers Please Help How many of you reading this enjoy a stroll around Yaxley and walk your children to and from school? When you are out on your walk, have you found yourself dodging the dog faeces on the pavements because their owners haven’t picked up the mess?

Vivacity Premier Fitness enjoys

successful launch day

Vivacity Premier Fitness, the new premium gym in Hampton, opened its door on Saturday 1 February to a crowd of excited gym users, ready to set foot in the brand new facilities for the first time in public use. None were more excited than and as keen to enter the building as Lisa Richardson, 35, from Yaxley, who was the first person into the building as a gym user. Lisa was presented with a bottle of Champagne by Ben Clawson-Chan, General Manager, and John Marsden, Head of Sports and Recreation at Vivacity. Lisa explained how she had many reasons why she wanted to join Vivacity Premier Fitness, but namely to get fit, tone up and to be able to give herself some ‘me time’ as a mother of young children. First in the new 25m swimming pool was Helen Crosbie, 38, from Folksworth. Helen explained how she was drawn to Vivacity Premier Fitness by the great swimming facilities and joined with the New Year’s resolution to get fit, lose weight and be more positive in life. Previously a keen swimmer, she has returned to Vivacity Premier Fitness with the personal challenge of swimming half a mile every day. Vivacity Premier Fitness has been really well received with great feedback on the facilities. The centre offers great family, couple and individual memberships. Call 01733 864 744 for more information. Hadfield Road, A15 London Road, Hampton PE7 8BT

It has become quite common to ask our children to be careful where they are walking, for fear of walking in something very unpleasant. Dog faeces can contain toxocariasis which is a rare infection caused by roundworm parasites. It is spread from animals to humans via their infected faeces. Worst case scenario is if this gets in the eyes it can cause blindness. The residents of Yaxley are working with Huntingdonshire District Council to watch and report dog owners who leave their dog’s faeces behind. It is an offence to allow your dog to foul in public places and then you don’t clear it up. This includes FIELDS and PAVEMENTS. Please don’t let a child from Yaxley become poorly, clear up after your animal, because if you don’t you could be liable to a £75 fine.

Holme WI We had a great meeting in February, when David Milner and Tom Davies gave a very interesting talk and slide show on their recent travels in Africa. Some of the pictures were stunning and made all the members wish they had been able to go on such a wonderful trip. We also planned some exciting day trips out for the coming year, as well as evening trips to sample local restaurants. Next meeting Thursday 6th March 7.30pm at Holme Village Hall Our talk on this night will not be “puppy walking” (this will now be later in the year), but Veronica Hewins will be tickling our taste buds with an insight into Indian Cookery. Visitors are very welcome.

St. Peter’s Church Pledges Auction

15th March, 7.00pm (Raising funds towards the redecoration and rewiring project) Looking after a church building means constant work and expenditure, and the electrical wiring at St. Peter’s was getting to the dangerous point a couple of years ago. The congregation decided to redecorate at the same time as rewire, and have raised or promised a substantial proportion of the £120,000 cost already. As a major fund-raising event, there is to be a Pledges Auction, in the Church, with lots of really unique and amazing lots to bid for. There will be tea, coffee, and cake available, but please bring your own alcohol and glasses. The bids range from one hour of ironing to a week in a skiing chalet; from a framed picture of the church to a day sailing on the Norfolk Broads. As I write this, mid-way through February, we already have over 60 lots, and really interesting donations towards a raffle. There is still time to make a pledge – please contact us through the website. On arrival on the evening, you will be asked to register, and will be given a bidding number card. You can then bid for as many items as you wish, settle up with the cashier (cash is best, sorry no cards, cheques will have to clear) and take your pledges home. Then you can liaise with the person who pledged each item to redeem it on a date convenient for both of you. You can see the full list on the website, www.saintpeters.co.uk or detailed separately on our Facebook page, St. Peters Church, Yaxley. If there is something you are interested in, but you cannot be there on the night, there are “commission bid” forms available to download on the website. Please come along and support this event – it is really lovely to see the village’s historic church looking so beautiful with its clean bright walls and modern lights. Put the date in your diary, and get together with all your family and friends, for a fun night out!

Yaxley Parish Council

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Every year, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service raise thousands of pounds for The Fire Fighters Charity – and we couldn’t do it without the support of residents so we would like to say a big thank you!

What a start to the new year, the continued bad weather has played havoc with football, so much so that we have had to cancel most matches due to be played at both Middleton’s rec and Queens Park. However our team of ground staff continue to work hard to maintain our pitches in an effort to allow matches to be played as soon as we possibly can. Allotments, for those budding market gardeners, Yaxley Parish Council still have a few allotments available for rent. If you are interested in growing your own produce please call into the council offices off Main Street, ring on 01733 241958 or email clerk@yaxleypc.org.uk We are pleased to say that the replacement of the notice boards is continuing at a pace and the interest from groups advertising their forthcoming events or activities is so popular, that we can now only accept A5 size adverts. Dog mess! With all the bins around the village it is amazing that a few irresponsible dog owners continue to fail to clean up after their dogs. Please for the safety of young children and

out of respect for your neighbours and our neighbourhood take responsibility for your pet, bag it and bin it, and yes, it can go in any of the bins. The council have received a petition regarding this and are looking to support some of the ideas. This group have posted pictures of the effect it can have on children if we do not take action, and we welcome dog wardens to our village to challenge and take action on offenders.

This month, a number of fire stations across the county will be holding car washes so visit www.cambsfire.gov.uk or our social media channels to find out what stations near you are taking part.

Registration is now open for the

Annual Ladies Driving Challenge

Sunday, May 11, at Alconbury Airfield. More than 300 women will get behind the wheel of super-sized vehicles and if you want to take part sign up quick! For more information and to register, email ldc@bedsfire.com or call (01234) 845130.

Les Middleton from Cambridgeshire County Council continues to hold drop in meetings at Yaxley library every other Thursday 10.00 - 12.00, his next is the 6th March. Please use the opportunity to highlight highway issues, pot holes, dropped kerbs etc. for remedy.

Finally a huge thank you to all who supported our clothing bank challenge in January to see which station could collect the most unwanted textiles to raise cash for the charity – we’re eagerly awaiting the results.

Forthcoming parish council meetings can be found via our website www.yaxleyparish.org.uk

To find out if you are eligible for a free home fire safety check, call 0800 917 99 94.

Small change makes a big difference! Yaxley shoppers’ small change has made a big difference to a local scout and guides group and their fundraising efforts to build a new headquarters. The Central England foodstore on Bentley Avenue, Yaxley - part of the new society formed by the merger between Midlands Co-operative and Anglia Co-operative - ran a till point fundraising campaign which offered shoppers the opportunity to donate the small change from their shopping bill to three local causes. The four-week scheme raised £452.99 which was divided between Yaxley Scouts and Guides, Yaxley Infant School, and Stretton Pre-School. Gavin Price, store manager, said “Many of our shoppers are touched by the stories of local causes and are happy to give up their loose change to help the community.

The scouts and guides headquarters was a victim of an arson attack a few years ago and they are now raising funds to complete the new building”. Group scout leader, Gavin Needham, said “We are very grateful to the Yaxley foodstore for their continued support.”

“Supporting the scouts and guides has proved popular with our customers along with Yaxley Infant School and Stretton Pre-School. We will continue to support all three local causes throughout 2014.”

Divorce & Separation Cohabitation Disputes Pre-Nuptial Agreements Mediation Financial Matters Children Matters

For further information contact our local Family Law Specialist, Abby Smith

Maintenance On Divorce For Children and Spouses? Separation or divorce is extremely stressful especially when considering ongoing financial arrangements. All financial aspects need to be considered including housing, pensions and income. In some cases, in addition to child support payments, maintenance for a spouse is also appropriate. As a married couple each party has an ongoing obligation to financially support the other, even after separation or upon divorce. Spousal maintenance is generally calculated on a “needs vs. affordability” basis. If one spouse has an income which is much lower than their reasonable monthly outgoings they can be said to have a “need” for additional financial support. Consideration then has to be given to whether or not the other party can reasonably “afford” to pay spousal maintenance, sometimes in addition to child support. Many other factors also need to be considered such as which benefits or tax credits should be claimed now that each party are “single” as opposed to being a “couple”. This is an extremely complex area but one that is essential to consider when ensuring that each party has financial security now and the future. Abby Smith of Setfords Solicitors always approaches such matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting couples to reach a swift, amicable, cost effective agreement which best meets their specific needs. For any Family Law queries or information about Family Mediation please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you, with very competitive charging rates.

Sean Elliott from Scenic Gardens gives you his handy gardening tips and advice. Get ready for spring! It’ll be here before you know it so take advantage and have a good spring clean. Clear all leaf matter from the beds if this has not already been done. Dig over the beds incorporating organic matter to give the plants the best start. Remove any weeds that are starting to show. Spread a layer of mulch over bare soil to retain moisture and reduce weed regeneration. Weed driveways and paths while you have the time to get on top of the garden. Frosts can still be a hazard, coupled with the fierce March winds, it is essential to continue to protect vulnerable plants if a frost is forecast.

Wherever we start from and however late we “check in” we are promised that we can reach our heavenly destination.

Now may be time to have your trees looked at and remove the deadwood. Work can be carried out on most trees and has the benefit of looking good for the summer. With all the rain that we have been having this year we need to ensure our lawns are looked after in the right way. Keep off water logged lawns as much as possible. When the weather improves and the lawn has dried out enough you should cut the grass on the highest setting. Apply compost and seed to any bare patches that have developed. Edge the lawn with a half-moon to tidy up the edges. Keep an eye on pots and containers as they may need watering. Protect young shoots from slugs by applying slug repellent around the base. And remember to keep feeding the birds, they become accustomed to regular food.

I read a little while ago about a couple who thought they had bought themselves a real bargain holiday to the Caribbean. They turned up early at Birmingham airport in great expectation of a wonderful holiday in the sun.

Scenic Gardens T: 01733860587 (Behind Dobbies Garden Centre).

However, when they tried to check in they realised that they had made rather a big mistake. The holiday was so cheap because they had booked tickets from Birmingham Alabama in the United States and not Birmingham International in England! The couple had no choice but to go back home. What a contrast to the message of the Gospel of Christ. Wherever we start from and however late we “check in” we are promised that we can reach our heavenly destination. Whether we live in England, the US or anywhere else, whether we are young or old, whatever we have done in the past we are invited on the journey of faith which leads to eternal life. If you would like to check in for this journey please feel free to come along to one of our Sunday services – you are all very welcome. You might also like to join one of our Alpha courses which started on February 28th – details from me or see last month’s Gazette. May I also remind you that Sunday March 30th is Mothering Sunday. Our 11am service on this Sunday will provide an opportunity for us to give thanks for all that our mothers do or did for us. Please invite your mothers to this service and bring them with you before going out for lunch together! Finally, a last reminder that we are having an auction of pledges at St Peter’s in the evening of Saturday March 15th. Proceeds will be helping to pay for last year’s rewiring and redecoration of the church. There are really exciting lots on offer and I hope to see many of you there. With my prayers. Schools Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School This month Little Acorns have been continuing to take advantage of the bad weather by making mud pies and jumping in the puddles. All the children have been celebrating Chinese New Year. We have been dressing up in costumes from China, and have been sampling a variety of food. Pre – school made a Chinese dragon to parade around the nursery.

William de Yaxley Junior School Science trips have further immersed the children in their subjects last month. Year 3 visited the Think-tank museum in Birmingham, as they have been studying “Materials” as their topic. Year 4 has visited the National Space Centre in Leicester to further their learning journey and understanding about the Earth and Moon; inspiring them to write some wonderful poems about space, which they shared at their recent celebrations Assembly.

As spring approaches we have been planting seeds, and looking at how things grow and change. Our Pre- school children have been continuing to look at different stories and the characters within the books. To enhance this we are going to have a parent helper come in to visit and read a book in a different language. The children have also been learning basic French, and we were lucky enough to have a French student to help us. The nursery has also been looking at Valentine’s Day, and doing associated craft activities. If you would like to book/enquire about our Nursery please contact: 01733 244000 or visit www.littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

Holme Pre School Our theme ‘people that help us’ continue this term with the children particularly enjoying postmen/women.

In our upper school, Year 5 has paid a visit to the Museum of Classical Archaeology in Cambridge where they “wowed” the curator with their knowledge of Greek Gods! They were able to look at replicas of Ancient Greek statues and find out more about this civilisation, their sports, pastimes and how they lived (yes – there were a few giggles along the way!).

We are also working closely with Zoe Stockhill from the Children’s Centre who visits once a month at drop off time to offer any support to parents and provides a variety of different resources for the children to use in the setting each time she comes.

Year 6 are studying Kensuke’s Kingdom, a story written by the famous author Michael Morpurgo. In science, the children are looking at how animals have adapted to their environment and also been painting their wonderful clay models of Budagold in R.E. which they have made themselves in a linked Art activity. As part of their PSHE subject across the school, they have been talking about emotions and how they could manage risks: all very important life skills. Mrs Fussell has now joined the Year 3 team as Mrs Price left the school at half term. Our thanks to Mrs Price for all of her work in Year 3. On a sporting note, all the children in Year 4 took part in a Sportshall Athletics Competition at Stanground Academy and were the overall winners of the event. Some of our Year 4, 5 and 6 children also took part in a Swimming Gal at the Academy last term. Well done to all the children. As you may be aware, Ofsted paid our school a visit recently and whilst the outcome of the report was not what we were hoping for, it is has provided us with a very clear picture of areas for improvement, which we will all be working incredibly hard to achieve in the coming months. Should you want to read the report for yourself it is available via a link on our website.

The children wrote their own letters and drew pictures before walking to post them at the Village mobile post van. They also met the local postman when he came to deliver the Preschool post and were very excited to receive their letters and pictures back. The children have also enjoyed making their own post boxes too. This month’s also saw visits from Mrs Tofts, the Holme Primary School teacher and Steve Rose, a policeman which was a nice surprise for the children. We have more planned to entertain the children including a music teacher.

Reminder of our forthcoming fundraising event…

Yaxley Infant School Our whole school theme of Nursery Crimes continues to be a huge success, with visits and messages from characters, crime scene investigations, problem solving situations and many opportunities for creative writing. The village police are aware and have supported in the search for ‘Jack Frost’ although he hasn’t been around as much as we would have liked for the time of year! (maybe a rain based nursery rhyme would have been more appropriate!) At Yaxley Infant School we are keen to develop the children’s enthusiasm for books and reading. Our themed curriculum is just one way to achieve this. We also work hard to foster this love for reading by having termly reading challenges, visits to the village library, book swap days, volunteers on our reading sofa in the library, reading lots of stories and sponsored reading challenges. World book day is on 6 March and the staff will be dressing up as characters from the ‘Jolly Postman’ and the children will take part in a fun day of ‘Jolly Postman’ activities, let’s hope he delivers on time! Happy Reading!!

Stilton C of E Primary School

Stilton Playgroup

Children at Stilton Primary School have recently taken part in an RE Day, focusing on Christianity.

Love is in the air!

The children were split up into groups and took part in a number of RE based activities, including writing prayers and performing role plays of different bible stories. The children also took part in a number of art activities, such as making their own crosses and finger painting pictures of the world. They also made their own stained glass windows out of paper to represent different bible stories. We were also thinking about what Lent means and the children made their own Lent calendars. In the afternoon we all went over to the Stilton church to learn about the different features of the church. The children even had a go at playing the organ and ringing the church bells.

At time of writing, we are focusing on Valentine’s Day. We have learned about different emotions and have been making some beautiful heart crafts. On 14th we will be joined by a parent helper to do some Valentine’s baking. Last month we celebrated Chinese New Year with noodles for snack, fortune cookies and gold coins. We took home horse masks to welcome in the year of the horse. We are looking forward to a visit from Zoolab. We can’t wait to see all the creatures, from spiders to snakes! We will tell more next month! Late February will also bring our parents’ evening and open afternoons. These are fantastic opportunities for parents/carers to chat with their child’s key worker about development. It also gives them a chance to see the setting and the children’s wonderful creations.

Stretton preschool We have been very busy at both sites since our return from the Christmas break; our Main Street site headstart group have visited the Olivemead Care Home to entertain them with singing and to share drinks and biscuits. Preparations are already in full swing for the Yaxley festival!! During February both sites had a close encounter with ‘The Lion Learners’ allowing children to get up close with spiders, snakes, rabbits and other creatures. The children were all extremely brave and had an amazing time. The Fourfields site is holding a sponsored Princess and Pirates Day to raise money for a fantastic charity ‘Crackerjacks Children’s Trust’. Children and staff will be dressing up for this themed day. For more information about either site please visit our website www.stretton-pre-school.co.uk

To Gym or not to Gym?

Health & Beauty

Ok so I decided to take on a challenge. I am not the fittest person, the most exercise I get is walking my dog coupled with the odd bike ride or swim. I love my food and the odd tipple of alcohol which all in all means I’m not in the best shape I could be. So on entering the new Premier Fitness Gym on London Road, Hampton I was apprehensive, slightly embarrassed and scared, but hey I got through the doors so stage one was complete! Checking in with my new personal instructor Mo, (no not Mo from the Olympics even though I have been told he trains as hard!) was the second stage and daunting for both of us (believe me Mo was going to have his work cut out getting me in to shape!) My first session with Mo was ‘interesting’; he measured me, weighed me (one at a time I hear the scales shout) and talked to me about my plan. I was pleasantly surprised, no silly diet, sensible eating and exercise. I think Mo and I will get on well although maybe I was not quite in agreement with his insistence regarding some of the classes booked for me as I was hoping for a gentle start. However one big lesson was acknowledging that Mo was the one in the know and I would follow his advice to the letter.

My first class was ‘spinning’ or to give it the correct title ‘studio cycling’ which gives you a great cardio workout on a Star Trac Spinner Blade bike where you control speed and resistance- the ultimate fat burner. Getting on the bike was not fun, but the lady who took the class put me at ease and within 10 minutes I felt more relaxed if a little bit sweaty. 30 minutes on the bike, up and down hills with pumping music had the desired effect and I was proud of my efforts. Rounded off by a swim I felt pleased with the start of the 12 week challenge which is the programme I am going to follow and if I can do it then anyone can! I will be honest with how it’s going; the high and lows, hopefully no tears but lots of laughter all leading to a fitter me which will be a good thing. I anticipate it will be hard but I am sure, as with everything in life I will get out of it what I put in, and that includes the chocolates, pizza and cakes I have consumed and the cider and wine I have drunk.

Now if I could only find the corkscrew and darkened room life would be perfect...

Cardio by Jason Goodale

Is there really a best time to perform cardio? The timing you perform your cardio will not make a difference at all, there is no “best” time to do your cardio, you can do your cardio whenever you want, it all comes down to personal preference. (I just don’t recommend doing cardio right before your weights as you won’t have much energy for the weights). But any other time is perfectly fine and will not make a difference on your overall end results. Now yes you probably have heard that cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach (fasted state) or cardio post-workout is the best time to perform cardio as your glycogen stores are depleted/low so you can dip into your fat stores for energy and that you will burn more fat by doing cardio at these times. Well ok yes this is true, kind of.. You will burn more fat during the cardio if you do it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach (fasted state) compared to doing cardio later on in the day in a (feed state). However, the END results of the total amount of fat lost over the WHOLE DAY will be EQUAL! Why? Because fat loss is all about calories in VS calories out and the human body works on a much larger time frame! So yes if you do cardio in a fasted state you will burn more fat DURING the cardio session but then later on in the day you will burn LESS fat and more calories. Now if you did cardio in a feed state you would burn LESS fat during the cardio but you would burn MORE fat later on in the day. (presuming both diets are equal amounts of calories in both scenarios). If your fasted cardio session burns 400 calories than your feed cardio session burns 400 calories the end result over the day will be EQUAL. So whether you choose to do your cardio in a feed or fasted state it will NOT matter or make any difference what so ever in the total amount of fat lost as an end result.

CONCLUSION Do your cardio whenever it suits you best, it will make no difference on fat burned over a 24 hour period.

Yaxley riders

19th January “reliability ride” . Over 100 cyclists took part in the first Yaxley Riders Reliability Trial recently.

The event was based at the “Sunny Cafe” in the Broadway shopping centre attracting riders from as far away as St Ives and Oundle. This mass participation, non competitive event was staged to help bridge the lengthy gap between the 2013 and 2014 cycling seasons and attracted riders of all ages and abilities. There were courses of 50 and 80 miles with a sociable cafe stop at half distance in each event. The route went out across Northamptonshire before heading towards Rutland Water. Despite lots of flooding and some windy conditions the riders enjoyed the event giving it a thumbs up for future years. Riders President James Warrener said “it was great to run an event and tribute must be paid to Rob Bernard, Gary Gywnn, Andy Orvis and the res t of the team for making this happen and for it passing off so smoothly.” “Yaxley Riders started as a couple of blokes riding out to Sawtry and back for a chat on Tuesday nights and now supports a flourishing website, multiple weekly group rides, and social events.” “Of course it was nice to see riders from across the region come and join in with our ride, but

most of all the men and women from the village who took up the challenge and completed it. That’s what we set out to do and it gives the people running the group the most satisfaction. “ “Could the next Bradley Wiggins or Mark Cavendish be from Yaxley? We hope so and if they are we hope to aid their development in some way by teaching good, safe riding and the values of teamwork.” The summer promises to be a busy one for the group. Various riders within Yaxley Riders will be off racing with their clubs before a couple of local key cycling dates being marked with their new “Save the Dates” posters.

Yaxley girl’s cricket set to soar in 2014 Yaxley Cricket Club’s girl’s cricket team is looking to challenge for honours in 2014 following a hugely successful launch last season. The new team struggled early on by improved significant to pick up 2 league wins against local boys teams in the league and lifted the inaugural Ramsey U11 Girls tournament title, winning all 4 of their games. The progress was recognised by the Huntingdonshire County Cricket Board with 3 key members of the side – Nesta Bryant, Shannon Leishman and Grace Dowdeswell being selected in the County Squads for 2014 Yaxley youth coach and girls’ team manager Phil Lewis commented. “We took a bit of a risk at the start of the year, hoping that we could get enough girls to join the club, but I could not have predicted what an amazing turnout we had. Some of the talent that has been incredible, but importantly, the girls just have so much fun playing and training together as a group.” “The girls’ will play a full league programme again this season and we have also entered a local festival with the winners selected to represent Huntingdonshire nationally. If they keep improving and working hard they will give themselves a great chance of doing well” Junior coaching has already started at Nene Park Academy Sports Hall and will run through to Easter. Interested girls and boys from 6-15 years old are welcome to attend at the following times – beginners of all ages welcome. Wednesday from 6pm to 7.30pm for Years 7 and above Friday from 6pm to 7.15pm for years 3 and 4 Friday from 7.15pm to 8.30pm for years 5 and 6. Gardening

by Jim Green, Farcet Nurseries

March

March is the month for when serious gardening begins so gardening tools at the ready!

In the vegetable plot continue to buy and chit seed potatoes and if you already have some chitted and the weather and soil conditions are suitable then you could plant them now but it is a good idea to protect them with fleece. Onions and shallots can also be planted but again be sure that the soil conditions are suitable and plant in a sunny position. Tomatoes, peppers and aubergine seeds can also be sewn this month providing that you have a propagator making sure that they receive plenty of light throughout growing otherwise they will grow tall and lanky. Make sure that your greenhouse for your tomatoes are clean and ready for planting during April. If the soil conditions permit, you can now take your first light cut from your lawn and if you have not done so already cut the remains of last year perennials and clean the growing area. Plant out strawberry plants and rooted strawberry runners and if you grow that wonderful and useful herb chives, now is the time to divide and replant those established clumps. A very good tip for this month is to sew some peas in an ordinary gutter drainpipe filled with compost and start them in the greenhouse. Once weather conditions are suitable the peas can be slid from the gutter into a small trench in the garden and make sure that you protect from birds. For those people with smaller gardens and wanting to grow peas, it is a good idea to grow climbing peas in a large container, caned and wired for them to climb. This method, saves space and looks quite decorative and the peas are really easy to pick and it is surprising as to how big a crop you can obtain. However, you must look for the best pea varieties and these come from Heritage seeds (older varieties) and are available from many suppliers on the internet. Finally, do not forget to fertilise your roses and it is a good idea to place charcoal in the bottom of your water butts to help keep the water sweet. Remember...

”Play in the soil because life is too short to have clean fingernails” Happy Gardening!

Farcet Nurseries Brighten your patio with our colourful hanging baskets and patio containers. Primulas and Bellis available together with shrubs and conifers can be planted now.

Taxation

Question: I have received a new PAYE Notice of Coding for the tax year 2014-15 from HMRC – what should I do with this? Answer: You have received a notice of coding if you have two or more jobs at the same time, income from two or more pensions or receive a pension and have a job and you may receive more than one notice. PAYE codes are issued so that you pay the correct amount of tax in the tax year. You should check that these show the correct personal allowances and deductions or restrictions and contact the tax office straight if they are incorrect, or pass it to your advisor or to us to check. This will ensure you do not pay too much tax or too little in the tax year, but it can be corrected later.

BLOG Who is the Yaxley Gazette Blogger? Drew Pontikis has been a Yaxley resident for the past 6 years, and has two young sons to keep him busy. He works as an Analyst in Orton Southgate, but dreams of becoming a writer.

HELLO TREACLE! I recently had an extremely unusual experience whilst going to the shops that I thought I’d share with you. It was a Sunday afternoon, my wife and mother in law were busily cooking a delicious roast dinner and my two boys were frantically redecorating the living room walls with their crayons, and I had been sent to Co-op to choose something for pudding. Naturally, my mind was filled with thoughts of cheesecake and profiteroles as I walked towards the entrance. To the left, sitting on the railings were a couple of boys, probably about 13 years old, laughing and joking and comparing who had the biggest micro-scooter. ‘Fair enough’ I thought to myself ‘kids have got to hang out somewhere, and better here than on the street corn…..’ My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by one of them calling to me loudly “helloooooo treacle!” As his mates all fell about laughing, I found myself stunned. What on earth had gone through this kids mind to think that a) this was something funny and b) that it could be considered a good idea to yell this at a stranger? Bewildered, I shook my head in disbelief at the shocking state of the youth of today, walked on passed his now hyperventilating mates, and into the shop.

I must confess, I had never been called treacle before. It was a bit like being called baby doll; not the sort of thing a 28 year old man can expect from a stranger. I became a bit concerned for the child’s welfare at this point; where I grew up, shouting ‘hello treacle’ at a stranger was a sure sign that you were about to have your face rearranged. What if he tries that with some lunatic? It was my civil duty to point out to him that this was a dumb thing to do and it may perhaps be a good idea not to do it anymore. I needn’t have worried. As I walked out of the shop cheesecake in hand, I saw him being led to an Audi by his very disgruntled looking mother, followed only by the smirks of his friends. The moral of this story? No matter how funny you think you are, it is nothing compared to how funny it is seeing your mum embarrass you in front of your mates.

You are always in such a hurry, but it will pay to change your routine this month and slow things down somewhat, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Virgo August 24-September 23

You may feel frustrated by delays this month, but you need to take things in your stride, remember a bad mood is like a flat tyre, you can’ get very far without changing it! A heart to heart with a loved one will allow you to express how you are feeling and achieve the support you so dearly need. Good karma is about to start paying off.

If you have been wondering which move to make next, take a step back and look at your situation objectively, imagine it were a friend in your situation, what advice would you give to them? Listen to your words and you’ll have the answer you have been searching for. Good news concerning a loved one will give you reason to celebrate.

Aquarius January 21-February 19

Remember you cannot please everyone all of the time, so take time to look after you! Someone who has been playing with your heart strings may reappear when it suits them; make sure you don’t get hurt all over again. A work opportunity could see you considering relocation.

Pisces February 20-March 20

Small may be beautiful, but not when it comes to life goals, this month you need to aim big if you are to achieve what you really want. Watch out for gossipers and jealousy, certain people are desperate to know what you are up to, keep you plans close to your chest. Pay close attention to any legal documents you have to sign.

If it is your birthday this month....

Pull out all the stops in order to get the results you have been longing for. Your work is in high profile this month and you will have your eye on the star prize, you are determined to improve you income potential, but you have to do the hard work first. A jealous colleague could cause a stir, don’t be too reactive. A relationship needs some TLC, communication is vital.
