As I write, the sun is shining, the evenings are drawing out and spring is here! In this edition, Stewart Howe gives us a fascinating insight into one of the projects aimed at safeguarding, promotion and diffusion of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Fenland basin and Fen edge. Read about the FenEdge Trail on page 15. The centre pages of this issue host the Yaxley Parish Council Chairman’s report and plans for the future. As preparations for Yaxley Festival reach fever pitch, read about the sparks that flew during recent fundraising and also more about this unique and exceptional event that promises music, lights and entertainment for everyone on page 15. Our community is thriving and it’s great to be a part of it. Let us know if you are investing in the local area. Please don’t forget to mention to the advertisers that you saw them in the Yaxley Gazette, as without them this publication would not be possible. As always, we look forward to hearing all your news and views. Thanks again for your continued support and Happy Easter!

I have a cat. Well, I say I have a cat, I don’t really – I’ve adopted a cat. Like all my best friends, I know virtually nothing about them; who it belongs to, what its name is, whether it’s a boy cat or a girl cat. What I do know, however, is that ...

This cat is awesome! So, the first time I met this cat, it was in my house. Normally, when some uninvited animal finds its way into my house (like a wasp, or a spider, or a double glazing salesman), they’re dealt with in the same way – swatted with a magazine, thrown out the window. This cat though, wandered into my kitchen (from the hallway, I might add) and walked up and started rubbing on my leg. I’m not one for pets; my base line position is I generally don’t like things that aren’t me, but I couldn’t be too cross – even if it had just wandered into the room from somewhere else in my house. Gently, I ushered it out the kitchen door and went back to my washing up. Within a minute, I looked down and saw the same cat back in my house, rubbing against my leg again. Clearly then this was some sort of magical, opposite version of Schrödinger’s cat; neither alive nor dead in the box but permanently alive and in my kitchen. Ignoring the fortune that I would make from owning a magic cat, I once again ushered it out the door. Having shut the door and walked back into the living room, I was just in time to see it jump in through the window like it owned the place. I couldn’t help but smile. That was the first time we met. Since then, I find it at least a couple of times a week waiting for me outside my garden; it then walks down the street with me and keeps me company until my friend picks me up on the way to work. It wanders through my garden most days, and looks in through the window at my two year old, who gets very excited – it’s a relationship that has all the perks of having a pet cat without any of the fuss. Just for reference, whoever owns this cat – your cat is awesome.

Inconsiderate parking I have received a number of complaints recently from our neighbours regarding inconsiderate parking by parents taking children to and from school. Whilst I am pleased to report the new zig zags outside our pedestrian entrance on Daimler Drive, funded by the Yaxley Parish Council, have calmed the parking along that stretch of road, we are still experiencing issues along Queen Street and the road leading to the school from that corner. Please DO NOT park on the verges or drives of our neighbours; I have taken a look and they have been churned up to a muddy bath and I can understand why our neighbours are so frustrated. Please do not block drives or park on the pavements. In addition, please comply with the yellow zig zags (at each entrance to the school) and keep this area clear; please note there is a ‘keep clear’ zone along the road leading to the school from Queen Street, for peak school hours. This provides a clear, traffic free area for children to access the school and needs to be adhered to for their safety.

Thank you Yaxley!

Dear Yaxley residents, On Saturday 4 March, I lost my paper round wages in between delivering customers’ papers and going home. I retraced my steps and village to no joy. I am saving up £400 for a new bike to do my round on and to cycle with my dad's cycling group. Losing my wages was so upsetting and silly of me; I work hard in all weathers delivering the village newspapers. So, to lose my wages was so gutting. Unknown to me, my dad posted on the Yaxley Gazette Facebook page, to see if anyone had found it and handed it in. What happened next was amazing, the community of Yaxley/ Farcet chipped in to cover my wages and a little more towards my new bike. This was so overwhelming and especially from people I've never met. On the 6/3/17 I banked £82 from people's kindness. Again, a huge thank you to the community for helping me. Logan Langley - 13yrs

Broadway and Landsdowne shopping centres Having listened to the shop keepers and in an attempt to boost trade, it has been decided, for the time being, to withdraw parking control measures at the Broadway Shopping Centre. This will probably take effect from the end of February, with the equipment being removed during the last week in February. We shall, however, be monitoring parking use at the Broadway Shopping Centre, as the car parks are private for the sole use of visitors to the shops and the flats on site. These shops serve your local community – please support them. Shopping centre management team

Rotary Club Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, has once again selected 12 unsung heroes, to be recognised as part of the Champions of Change Awards. Many congratulations to our member Janet Cooke! She has been invited to the House of Lords in April, to be presented with her award by The Rt Hon - The Lord Hague of Richmond PC FRSL. Also being presented with the award, for international service, is David Wallwork from Ramsey, whose outstanding work for the David School in Sierra Leone, has been proudly supported over the years. The awards, now in their fourth year, celebrate the outstanding humanitarian service of Rotary members. Janet has been chosen in appreciation for the work she has done over the years for those living with dementia, and for their carers, in Peterborough. The letter offering the award, congratulates Janet on “being nominated as a Champion of Change for your Crocus Café & Peterborough Dementia Action Alliance Project and being recognised by your District for this prestigious award.” It goes on, “I am delighted to inform you that you will be awarded one of the 12 Champions of Change Awards.” Janet has been the moving spirit behind the opening and development of the Crocus Café, which meets every month at the Salvation Army and which provides entertainment, conversation, companionship, advice and tea and cakes for those living with dementia and their carers, not to mention days out Janet is also a leading member of the Peterborough Dementia Action Alliance (PDAA) which is so effective in providing help all over the city and makes this city an example to others. Peterborough is a truly dementia friendly city. Very well done, Janet. Congratulations!

Stilton Pavilion All the years of hard work, frustrations and triumphs were crowned on Saturday 18 February, by the formal opening of Stilton Pavilion. A huge crowd of sponsors, contributors, villagers, Pavilion users and well-wishers filled the Main Hall to hear words of appreciation from Olive Main (Stilton Parish Council), Mark Angus (Project Team) and Chris Walford (Amenities Committee). By any criteria, the Pavilion has proved an outstanding success, coming in within budget, built to an exemplary standard and demonstrating what a community can come together to achieve. Our local MP, Mr Shailesh Vara, honoured the project by unveiling the commemorative plaque and adding his own words of praise. And Rev. Richard Gibbs provided a blessing on our newest asset and the people who brought it into being. But, perhaps the most welcome appreciation of the new Pavilion comes in the form of the many users who have already moved in to this spacious new facility. Also, event bookings are already being taken for dates into 2018! As Mark Angus explained, this opening is just a milestone in the future of the Pavilion, which will continue to develop over the years to provide a legacy to future generations.

Both our speakers for February and March cancelled at the last moment; however, they were ably replaced by Dorothy Woods and Maureen James respectively. Two very different speakers, but equally entertaining in their different ways. Dorothy spoke on 'Creative Embroidery' and brought examples of her lovely work along. She is a lady of many talents - hat making, make up, hairdressing and in later life did a degree on garden design. She has certainly made the most of every minute of her life! At our March meeting, Maureen showed slides and talked of Fenland Folklore, which brought back a lot of memories of sayings learned as children. Apparently, some superstitions are reversed in different areas. For instance, in the Peterborough area, we would hang a horseshoe with the open ends up to stop the luck falling out, but in some parts of the country, it would be hung with the open ends down to prevent witches hiding there! As our members were expecting some cheese samples, we had cheese and crackers after the talk, instead of our usual biscuits. Our speaker for 13th April (fingers crossed!) is George Waugh, a retired butler from Burghley House. We meet as usual at the Lancaster Club, Main Street, Yaxley at 7.30 and visitors are always welcome.

The newly refurbished Yaxley Community Fire and Rescue Station, was officially opened by the Chairman of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire Authority - Sir Peter Brown and Chief Fire Officer Chris Strickland. Around 30 people, including former firefighters from the station, attended the event held today (Wednesday March 1). Sir Peter said, “This new station is a significant improvement for the crew, while also keeping the character and heritage of the old station. Firefighters can also maintain their skills on-site in a modern, purpose built training facility to harness their techniques. “As a Service, we are passionate about providing the best possible service to the residents of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, which is why it is a real positive that we continue to invest in new equipment for operational firefighters.” Chief Fire Officer Strickland added, “We are a predominantly on-call service, so investing in ensuring our crews have modern stations to work and train in, is hugely important to us. This station marks the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication from all involved. “We rely heavily on local communities to crew our fire engines and are always looking to recruit staff to join our on-call service. With these fantastic new facilities available, now is a great time for Yaxley residents to get in touch with us to find out more about becoming on-call firefighters.” Work on the 1879 conserved building began in September 2015 and took just over a year to complete and was carried out by SDC Builders Ltd. The project cost around £1.2 million. Watch Commander John Cox said, “The project was a first for the Service because normally any new

work is based around existing architectural plans. However, with Yaxley, an architect had to design the new part of the building based around the existing station, which is situated on a narrow site as well as built on a slope. The work blends in very nicely with what was there and retains the history of the station. “I was delighted to be part of the project. I was involved in the development of the site from the planning and development stage, and so were staff, which makes it a very pleasurable working environment and we have now got everything we need.” The station has a lecture room, office, welfare facilities and bay with space for one fire engine, along with a new smoke house training facility, that replaced the old drill tower at the back of the site. The on-call crew from the Huntingdonshire village was moved to a site in Enterprise Court on the Eagle Business Park, for a year while building work took place. They moved back to the station in October. Watch Commander Cox added, “The new station has made a huge difference to the crew. The old station didn’t have any showers, so now it means we don’t have to go home after a job and wake our families up at three in the morning when we have a shower.” The station is crewed by oncall firefighters who live or work in the village. To find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter at Yaxley, or any other on-call station, visit the on-call section of the CFRS website.

Local community groups are able to make use of the new facilities, such as the lecture room and kitchenette by emailing bsgservicedesk@cambsfire.gov.uk

Memorial to B17 ‘Ten Horsepower’ Lambing Sunday

Reliability ride success More than sixty riders braved cold and wet conditions to take part in Yaxley Riders’ fourth annual Reliability Ride. The ride, which took place on Sunday, March 12, began and finished at Yaxley FC’s In2itive Park, in Leading Drove, with cyclists setting the aim of finding out whether they are a reliable rider or not, based on completing the ride in a chosen time. With three routes to choose from (over 39 miles, 50 miles or 80 miles), riders took on some of the area’s most picturesque and challenging terrain sprawled across Cambridgeshire, with a dip into Northamptonshire and Rutland. Despite the challenging conditions, all of the participants returned home safely, with just under half proving themselves reliable. Yaxley Riders admin member, Nick Reinis-Keightley said, “For the fourth year in a row, this was another hugely successful event. “We’re delighted to have had so many riders turn up, with many travelling from far and wide to take part; as an admin team, we really appreciate the distances people travelled to be involved on the day.” Attentions now turn to the new season, with more regular weekly rides (on Tuesdays and Thursdays) due to begin once again next month, to join the Sunday Spinner, which takes place every week, weather permitting.

For more information, search for: “Yaxley Riders cycling group” on Facebook or visit www. yaxleyriders.co.uk. Alternatively, find us on Twitter via @YaxleyRiders.

On Sunday 12 March, around 1,500 visitors made their way to Morborne for the annual ‘Lambing Sunday’. The event was organised by the National Farmers Union (the NFU) and hosted by farmers, Nigel & Janet Rome and their children, Amelia and Joe. Despite a little light rain, adults and children alike were able to climb aboard various farm machinery - with a red tractor (promoting the British Farm Standard) supplied by local machinery dealer, Chandlers. Many took the chance to ride a horse and cart brought by Waldburg Shires and there were also chicks hatching on cue from eggs – all supplied by local hatchery, Joice & Hill. There was also toy tractor racing, marshalled ably by the Oundle Young Farmers – it was a lot of fun! Amelia Rome was on hand for children to hold a lamb and the East of England Agricultural Society hosted an interactive classroom with straw bales for chairs. Refreshments were served in the bustling All Saints Church next door. The centrepiece, of course was the lambing shed and local farmers gave commentary and answered questions as not one, not two, but seven sheep gave birth in the lambing shed including two sets of triplets! The £3,000 gate receipts were split between charities, including the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (a welfare charity which supports farmers and farmworkers in difficulty) and Anna’s Hope (the leading children's brain tumour charity in the East Of England) who sent a team of brightly dressed angels to raise spirits and organise games. If you missed out and would like to keep in touch, search and join the group ‘NFU Lambing Day – Morborne’ on Facebook. Watch out for local signs for the event next year on 11 March 2018. The organisers, the NFU and Nigel and Janet, want to thank everyone who came and helped out and look forward to seeing you there next year!

On 20 February, Stilton gathered in the new Pavilion, to unveil a memorial to the crew of B17 bomber ‘Ten Horsepower’ of the 351st Bomber Group, USAAF, which crashed on Red Hill on 20 February 1944.

Image credits to Stilton Community Association Local landowner, Don Darke, who was a small boy at the time, vividly recalled his memory of the doomed aircraft. As the remaining two crew members wrestled with its heavy controls in an icy blast through the shattered cockpit, to try and land at Polebrook Airfield and save the life of their injured pilot. The southwest corner of the Pavilion looks out directly onto Red Hill, making it the perfect location for a memorial to the USAAF’s most decorated aircrew. Looking out, it is all too easy to visualise the awful sight of a B17 breaking up and cartwheeling to destruction. With guests of honour from the USAF, we stood in thought for the oneminute silence, which was ended by a particularly poignant Last Post, played by a trumpeter from the GB Home Guard Band. Then, we watched and applauded as Colonel Bickerstaff, Commanding Officer of RAF Molesworth, formally unveiled the memorial plaque to his fallen countrymen. The story of Ten Horsepower might have remained forever untold but for the diligent research of author Rick School, who described the crew’s heroism in his book ‘Valor at Polebrook’. Sadly, unable to be present for the ceremony, Rick sent his own personal tribute, read by Karen Munton, MD of Airfield Warehousing at Polebrook. In it, Rick concluded: ‘I thank God for the men and women who have gone before us so that we may be free. Yes, seventy-three years ago today, the lives of ten men were forever altered. We pay tribute to them and all who have answered the call to protect and defend our freedoms. May God bless our two countries and our armed forces, who willing go when called, so that we may be free.’ You can find the full text of Rick’s moving tribute on www.stilton.org

Run your way to a healthier heart The Great North Run is the most iconic half marathon in the world and covers 13.1 miles from the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, to the coast in South Shields - with an amazing atmosphere, it’s an event not to be missed. This year, why not set yourself the challenge of completing the famous race while raising money for Heart Research UK – a charity which has been helping hearts for 50 years. Since 1967, they have funded £24 million of medical research across the UK and it’s thanks to work like theirs, that the annual number of UK deaths from cardiovascular disease, has more than halved. Although the UK’s single biggest killer, a significant number of heart disease cases can be preventable through maintaining an active lifestyle and healthy diet. This is precisely the reason why training for an event such as the Great North Run is a great way to keep your heart healthy. Help more people live healthier, happier, longer lives by signing up for one of Heart Research UK’s places in this year’s Great North Run. If you have been lucky enough to gain your own place on the run, you can still join the team, raise sponsorship money and run in a Heart Research UK vest. Simply fill in the form on the website and select “own place.” By signing up to raise money for Heart Research UK, you will gain support throughout your fundraising, including: fundraising ideas, training and nutritional advice, a running vest and other hints and tips. As well as all this, they will help you get publicity to highlight your own personal story and advertise your fundraising to support you in raising as much money as possible. Visit www.heartresearch.org.uk to sign up and for any questions contact Rachel by calling 0113 234 7474 or emailing community@heartresearch.org.uk

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so, email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.

A tax return can be filed as soon as the tax year ends. Once you have collected all that is required – you do not have to wait until the following January. It is far better and less stressful to get everything together sooner, rather than later. Of course then, you know sooner what the dreaded tax bill in the following January will be. Also, if your tax return is prepared before the second payment on account in July is due and if your tax is less than the previous year, you can apply to reduce it. Lesley, who keeps our offices running smoothly, has compiled a few tips to help. Lesley’s Housekeeping Tips for the Tax Year Ended 5 April 2017:  If you were scrambling around last tax year to get everything ready for your accountant, or even yourself, to enable your tax return to be prepared, why not follow these few tips to make life easier.  As soon as you receive information relevant for the tax year 2016/2017, make a file (or obtain a proverbial shoebox) to keep everything together. These are a few items you should obtain and keep:  P60’s or P45’s;  Pension statements;  If you are a landlord and claim mortgage interest relief, keep the mortgage statement(s) that are in respect of let property;  Obtain and keep bank/building society interest certificates for all accounts that pay you interest;  Keep all dividend vouchers in respect of dividends received;  Don’t forget that if your spouse or civil partner has not used all their personal allowances, they may transfer 10% of their PA to you, providing you are not a higher rate tax payer. Tips for Self Employed and Owner Managed Limited Companies:  Obtain and keep invoices and/or receipts for all expenses. HMRC could refuse your tax relief or input VAT if you have no evidence of an expense without a receipt or VAT invoice. Also, fuel receipts etc. do fade if left in sunlight  Obtain and keep all bank statements where business transactions are made  Write up your records on a regular basis; there is nothing worse than having to write your records up for a long period These are only a few ideas to consider and there may be many other “housekeeping” matters you could attend to make your life easier (and your accountant’s) and take some of the stress out of preparing tax returns.

Dates to remember - April 2017 1 April 2017 Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 30 June 2016. 7 April 2017 Due date for filing and payment of VAT for the period ended 28 February 2017, unless you submit a paper return, then the date is 31 March 2017. Monthly dates: 19th of the month: Due date for postal payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions and online filing deadline for CIS300 monthly return and final FPS for 2016/17 to HMRC. 22nd of the month: Due date for electronic payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions to HMRC.

Outdoor bowling commences Spring is here and the indoor season bowling on carpet gives way to the outdoor season bowling on grass. As usual, after a lot of hard work our Green, behind the Farmers on Broadway, looks fantastic, all members are looking forward to the outdoor season. However, we still have some work to do; after storm ‘Doris’ caused considerable damage and lifted off what we thought was a permanent veranda and dumped it over the other side of our pavilion! The Green will be open for play on Friday 14th April - and we can’t wait! We have a very active, friendly team run by our Club Captain Mr. Bruce Saint. Bruce is always looking for new talent to join the club and compete in friendly games against other clubs in the region. As well as our friendly side, we will be fielding 3 teams in the Midweek league, (the Yaxley Kites, Yaxley Falcons and Yaxley Eagles). 2 teams in a weekend league (the Yaxley Sharks and Yaxley Seals), and 2 teams in the Club 60 league (the Yaxley Spitfires and the Yaxley Hurricanes) During the year, our members compete for various trophies that are

awarded at our Annual Presentation Night – this year on the 3rd March at Yaxley Football Club. It’s good to get together once again after the winter, and ready ourselves for the summer ahead; a great time was had by all that attended. We are always looking for new members, in particular new talent to come along and bolster the chances of our teams winning trophies. Bowls is a game for everyone, not just ‘oldies’, so if you think you could be good enough, come along to one of our Saturday morning friendly ‘Roll-ups’ and have a go; you never know, you might even find yourself competing in the Commonwealth Games in 2018 in Australia. (Contact our Secretary Kathy Browning Tel: 241967) Members are reminded that subscription will soon be due. The picture shows some of our members with the League and Cup trophies they won in 2016

Cuckoos to face Wisbech in cup final The Fenmen won their semi-final at Desborough on penalty kicks to set up a mouth watering final against our lads. With a number of former players of each club on each side and our Manager Brett Whaley and Chairman Malcolm Clements, both having served the opposition, this one promises to be a grudge match. Yaxley were last UCL cup winners 11 years ago, under Jim Watson and we have an interview with Scott Bogusz, the only surviving member of that side on

Yaxleyfc.com at the moment. There is still a number of league matches to be completed before the season ends and we sit third in the UCL Premier Division at the moment. But it’s not all about the success of the first team, we have junior sides going over a year unbeaten and ladies teams putting 11 or 12 goals past their opponents - so it’s a great time to be part of the club.

Yaxley Festival

Wow! Where have the last 4 weeks gone? It has been a bit of a whirlwind and now we only 5 weeks left to go!

I

am excited and very pleased, to say that we are all systems go and the planning of the festival has reached fever pitch. We are finally entering the penultimate stage, with every member of the organising committee working exceedingly hard towards the same goal - to bring you a bigger and better festival, reaffirming our title as the biggest free community festival in the UK. This would not happen without the amazing support that the beautiful village of Yaxley gives us and, with over 40 bands and artists, playing a mixture of covers and new material, a new light show and a floodlit event, there is guaranteed to be a sight and sound for everyone. This year, you can also get involved with the Yaxley Rugby Club on the 3G pitch with touch rugby. This is the fastest growing sport in the UK and the best thing is that it’s non-contact. There will be skills training and fun and games

for all ages from 5 – 105. So, take a breather from the music and see what you can do to get fit in 2017. For me, the most important part of the Festival is the parade and this year we are going to make this more accessible for everyone. We are reducing the length of the route and having it directly from the Three Horseshoes on Main Street, into the Middletons Recreation Ground, removing the hill and traffic, so more children and groups can get involved in a safer parade. If you, your children, your school or group want to be involved in the parade, please contact us because we can make it happen. We want to say a massive thank you to everyone involved with the 1st Great Yaxley Firewalk; the support for this event exceeded all of our expectations. Not only did we raise a staggering amount of over £7000, but also a huge well done to Jasminka Jovkouska who raised in excess of £800 and has

also won the full VIP Hospitality Package and will, as part of the prize, be opening the festival alongside our patrons Warwick Davies and Shailesh Vara. The firewalk would not have been possible without the Yaxley Partnership and the organisations involved with it. A huge thank you to the Yaxley Scouts & Guides, The Young People’s Counselling Service, Gemma’s Hearts, The Three Horseshoes, The Young Technicians, Junction 17, Excel Autocare, Moor Farm, ABC Meats, RTC Plant Hire, Howsafe Ltd, Marc Wheatley, Crystal Clear Productions, DB Fire Safety, ImpraGas, ICKLE Pickle Faces and of course, you - the amazing residents of Yaxley - whose generosity and support made this the biggest fund raising event EVER in the history of Yaxley. I also want to say well done to Excel Autocare, who won the prize for the largest team and highest combined sponsorship at the

Alec Pickles

Firewalk, with an amazing £500. This has earned them a free pitch at the Festival. Make sure you pop along and see what they can do for your car with dealer level servicing at garage prices. A special thank you goes out to Michelle Lay, from The Young People’s Counselling Service, as well as Zack Batchelor and Pino Soccio, from The Young Technicians; this was a great event and the work that you do is unmeasurable. The Young People’s Counselling Service and the Yaxley Partnership are already planning their next adrenaline filled adventure, so don’t forget to ask them how you can get involved. Remember to keep an eye out for a flyer coming through your door, with exclusive Festival offers and new for this year the programme of events, meaning you can plan what you want to see and do not miss any of your favourites.

If you want to volunteer, be involved with the parade or have any questions you want to put directly to me, email me at chair@yaxleyfestival.info

“ ...the Trail will enable the public to enjoy a fascinating area that has been of strategic importance for the local inhabitants since their first arrival.” Stewart Howe

a journey across a landscape & time

S

everal years ago, Yaxley’s Fenland Trust proposed a walking route to the Great Fen, subsequently encouraging both Parish and District Council to engage with a project that we believe offers tangible social and economic benefits for the parish. Since that day, we have been working in partnership with the Great Fen and developing our own projects centred around the safeguarding, promotion and diffusion of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Fenland basin and Fen edge. We have embedded heritage plaques, undertaken research, presented across the length and breadth of the country and assembled a growing collection of historical artefacts. One of the most exciting of our collaborative projects, is the Fen Edge Trail. In development for several years now, this is a walking route around the Cambridgeshire Fens, roughly following the land that is 5 metres above sea level, where the low-lying fenland meets the surrounding higher land. With detours to visit nearby viewpoints, historical sites and areas good for wildlife, the Trail will enable the public to enjoy a

fascinating area, that has been of strategic importance for the local inhabitants since their first arrival. The Fen Edge Trail is a national initiative set up by The Cambridgeshire Geological Society as part of their Geosites work. The CGS was born from the natural history department of Cambridge University and promotes interest in the geology of Cambridgeshire, the UK and worldwide. The Geosites team work to designate Local Geological Sites, which are highlighted for geological value for scientific, educational, historical and aesthetic reasons. Partners in developing the Trail are several local organisations, who are each exploring their local landscape to contribute to the project. The main partner in developing the Trail is The Fenland Trust in Yaxley and other key partners are the Great Fen and the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. The project is supported by academic institutions, including Cranfield University - who have used their state-of-the-art virtual reality suite, to produce and subsequently present 3D models of the Fenland edge landscape of Cambridgeshire. This virtual

approach is supported by aerial surveys over Cambridgeshire, which are expanding into Lincolnshire in 2017, as aircraft follow the trail as it slithers north along the fringe of the fen basin. Complimenting these efforts, is a major long-term study of the fen basin, to map its flora against geological data. This is notable because the region has been studied botanically since at least the 17th century but, almost without exception, the Fenland parts of its counties have been neglected. The Fen Edge also presents a natural perimeter for the unique landscape and biodiveristy of the Fen basin and could therefore potentially function as the threshold of a Biosphere Reserve. Multiple teams across Cambridgeshire are now dividing up and working on the Fen Edge Trail, considering physical interpretation, the establishment of ‘micro museums’ and even the restoration and development of new trail routes. Locally, geologists have been on the ground working from Peterborough to Ramsey on the trail with preliminary route data, now filtering through to

the Fen Edge Trail team. Farcet Parish Council is supporting the development of the “Fen View Museum”, which will play an important part in telling our local story, including the history of Fenland drainage, the brick industry and the worldfamous fossil deposits of the fen edge Oxford Clay, which offer a tantalising glimpse into a prehistoric world of predatory marine reptiles. The Fenland Trust’s own local work includes a study of the landscape history of the Fen Edge between Farcet and Holme, which is unearthing not only new information, but also highlighting sites for investigation. We look forward to developing the trail in 2017, as it continues to attract national and international interest and brings attention to an often neglected region.

Chocolate poisoning in dogs

T

here are a few ingredients in chocolate that aren’t good for our pets. The digestive systems of cats and dogs cannot cope with a high content of fats and sugars in their diets and it can contribute to a painful condition called pancreatitis. This is inflammation of the pancreas, the organ responsible for producing digestive enzymes and hormones such as insulin. Once a pet has had pancreatitis, they will often suffer bouts again in the future. It is treatable but can be fatal in some cases. The main poisonous ingredient of chocolate you need to be aware of, is a compound called theobromine, which is similar to caffeine. It is a plant alkaloid, which means it is naturally found in a plant, namely the cacao bean from which chocolate is derived. It is bitter tasting, so the more bitter the chocolate, the higher the theobromine content. Like caffeine, it is a stimulant and is responsible for the famed lift some people get from eating chocolate. As a stimulant, it affects the central nervous system,

We’re sure you know (and we’ve mentioned before) that chocolate is poisonous for our pets. There’s quite a few special occasions recently when chocolate is a popular gift (Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter coming up). Poisonings this time of year are more common, so we thought we’d tell you more about it.

increases heart rate, dilates blood vessels and stimulates urine production. In the pet’s body, all this adds up to serious consequences, including an often lethal overstimulation of the heart. Why is chocolate so toxic to our pets and yet we can eat it with no ill effects? It might surprise you to learn that theobromine can also be poisonous to people! It would just take a very large quantity to have a reaction (so don’t panic, you can still safely eat chocolate). The difference between us and our pets, is the digestive systems. Cats’ and dogs’ systems are not as efficient at metabolising (breaking down) theobromine and the process is much slower. This means our pets are far more sensitive to the compound. Toxic levels Like most poisons, effects are determined by a few factors. Theobromine toxicity levels is dependent on: • Type of chocolate – dark chocolate has a higher theobromine content per 100g than milk chocolate.

• Quantity of chocolate – it goes without saying that the more chocolate consumed, the more theobromine that needs to be metabolised by the digestive system. • Size of pet – it takes less theobromine to reach toxic levels in smaller pets. Remember, chocolate is also poisonous to cats, but cases are less common than with dogs. Symptoms of toxicity include: vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, excessive panting, muscle spasm and increased heart rate. Advanced symptoms include: cardiac failure, seizures, weakness and coma. It can be deadly – even a small amount! Luckily, fatalities are relatively rare (in comparison to the number of cases Vets see) thanks to awareness and prompt veterinary care. How does the vet treat a pet who has eaten chocolate? There is no antidote to theobromine poisoning. Veterinary treatment is dependent on toxicity level and symptoms shown. In serious cases, neurological (such as fitting) and heart

symptoms are treated as a matter of urgency to stabilise the pet. If the chocolate has been eaten in the last hour, the Vet must try to minimise theobromine absorption. This is done by: • Using a special drug to make the pet vomit – this expels any chocolate left in the stomach • The pet is given activated charcoal which absorbs any theobromine in the intestines (gut) • The pet is put on a drip to help to flush the toxin out of the body. The fluids also supports the body systems. Unfortunately, if it has been over an hour since the chocolate has been eaten, it is likely it has already passed through the digestive tract and the theobromine has already been absorbed into the bloodstream, so there is very little point to making the pet vomit. Veterinary treatment would concentrate on giving supportive care and monitoring closely. The prognosis is good and the majority of pets make a full recovery when given prompt veterinary treatment.

Leading the way to a dog’s personality By Graham Sykes

Are you frustrated with people judging your dog just because of their breed, when in fact they have nothing to worry about? ...

D

o you have a dog that isn’t good with children or adults and you need to let others know in advance? Or maybe, you have a dog that is not good with other dogs, yet other dogs come running up to your dog? There is a nationally recognised scheme for dog owners called the Traffic Light System. For those not familiar with it, the system is a colour coded collection of dog collars, leads, harnesses and coats, to forewarn other dog owners, or non dog owners, about your dogs personality. The collars , leads, harnesses and coats also have messages embroidered on them, reinforcing the warning.

Yellow: Adopt me, advertises the fact the dog is available for adoption.

Orange: Likes humans but not other dogs, so give me a bit of space.

Yellow: Nervous dog, give the dog space, may not like being petted, approached etc.

Green: Friendly and enjoys meeting other dogs and people.

Dark Blue: Training in progress, dog not fully trained. White: The dog is blind, so be careful not to startle the dog. White: Deaf dog, it is unable to hear you.

Purple: Do not feed, dog may have an allergy, be on a diet etc. Red: Caution do not approach, either humans or dogs. Bright Blue: Service dog, is being used for a specific duty.

These products make your dog walks a lot safer for you and your faithful friend; if everyone used the products it would prevent many unpleasant incidents. www.friendlydogcollars.com/about-us Yaxley Gazette | April 2017 | T: 01733 757342 | E: info@yaxleygazette.co.uk | www.yaxleygazette.co.uk

Chairman’s report to the Yaxley Annual Parish Meeting 6 March 2017 Full Council – Chairman Kevin Gulson and Vice Chair Rodney Butcher

It has been another busy year with the Council; we have continued to build on existing programmes while adding projects to improve facilities and areas for Yaxley

T

he council continues to support activities and groups that give benefit to the whole of Yaxley and its parishioners. Some of these grants we have awarded by way of free use of council facilities, this year totalling £7,420. These grants are to groups such as Yaxley parent and toddler, walking football and The Welcome club to name a few. Free use of our facilities is considered when organisers also offer their services free or at greatly reduced cost to users. Further grant funding is made available to groups such as the Library reading challenge, Citizens Advice, Cambridgeshire Search and Rescue and Fourfields School. We continue to be a key contributor to the Yaxley Festival, sponsoring the stage with £10,000 additionally free use of all Parish Council facilities through the whole weekend. Therefore we grant fund approx £23,000 throughout the year Councillor Ann Rees retired and moved away this year after a number of years service to the community, she will be missed. Following the usual adverts for councillor I am pleased to report that we have co-opted Jonathan Orchard to council. Long serving Councillor Clive Thorne reached a great milestone with 40 years’ service to the village. As a token of our appreciation he was awarded Honorary Freedom of the village. I could mention each and every Councillor but to keep it short I would like to personally thank all Parish Councillors who have given 20

their time freely to the community working to deliver improvements within the village. Each councillor brings something different to the table ensuring a balanced view of subjects to be discussed. Thank you to you all, the community benefits because of you. Personnel Committee Chairman Andrew Wood. This committee meet quarterly dealing with matters relating to our work forces safety, training and development etc. We have had both Mark Maltby and Sue Finch move on from the Council, and Olive Lenaghan takes a well deserved retirement. We wish them all well for the future. Unfortunately we have had to accept early retirement of our Ground Maintenance Supervisor Graham Hill, due to illness. Graham had dedicated 10 years to the Council and demonstrated local knowledge and skills which will prove difficult to replace. We wish Graham and his family well for the future. We have been busy recruiting replacements to which we have had significant interest and have recently appointed Michelle Darbon as Booking Clerk and Andrew Wright as Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, both live in the village. The ground maintenance team have continued their program of activities within the village. Many of the Council’s open space areas have been, or are being cleared to encourage new growth, removing self set undergrowth and encourage wild life. Graham continued to provide guidance and experience

where possible, Peter Marchant, Ray Allen & Jason Thorne have taken individual responsibility to successfully complete projects throughout the year. We also had Jo Anderson support the team through the summer months then returning to University to complete his studies. Jo proved to be a great asset with a variety of work. Our facilities continue to be looked after efficiently by Beryl Maltby, who has increased her responsibility following Olive’s retirement. Financial reporting is delivered by Beverly Porter, who analyses our costs, identifying areas of high spend and areas for improvement. The clarity of reporting is very much appreciated by the Full Council in assisting with the approval of expenditure and understanding our overall financial position. During such a challenging year, our Clerk, Helen Taylor, has proven to be the valuable lynch pin that we have become accustom to, at times working beyond the call of duty to ensure the smooth running of Council operations. This year Helen had taken on additional work due to staff changes, which the recruitment process will alleviate. Her work involves keeping council informed of all new laws and regulations, liaising with various authorities including Cambridgeshire County Council, Huntingdonshire District Council, Police and local groups, encouraging a closer working relationship with them while keeping an eye on our cost base. With all this going on, its’ pleasing to offer our congratulations to Helen

in achieving the CiLCA (Certificate in Local Council Administration) qualification, well done Helen and thank you for your dedicated work through the year. As you can see, our workforce has continued to rise to the challenges, improving facilities and reducing costs to the benefit of the community. Using their individual skills and expertise to ensure Yaxley village continues to be maintained and supported. Thank you. Community Facilities Committee Chairman Graham Bellamy. This committee meets monthly and has a wide range of responsibilities including cemeteries, street furniture, play areas, pitches, equipment and allotments. The work program this year included repairing and painting the Parish Council bus shelters, gravelling of the old cemetery area started late last year, painting the Austin Hall through the summer, while maintaining weekly schedule of emptying the 60+ bins around the village every week and maintaining Parish Council grass areas. Use of the 3G pitch has gone from strength to strength we currently have a waiting list for evening sessions and weekend games including new football sessions for juniors. Following completion of verti –draining at Queens Park, the playing surfaces have been greatly improved as reported in this year’s FA inspections. This should help with reducing damage and cancellations due to water logged

pitches etc. Again these pitches are being booked up well in advance. The main equipment purchases this year have been a triple mower for use at Queens Park and Middletons Recreation ground and a new Kubota mower, trading in similar older equipment. A full survey of Parish Council trees has been carried out in line with our 5 year inspection requirement, and a program of advised remedial work is being carried out by our grounds team where possible and the remainder work outsourced. All of this is being delivered to a digital mapping program which will help with future maintenance requirements. Two years ago this committee were successful in their LHI (Local Highways Improvement) bid for a safe crossing at the London Road end of Broadway; however we have been less than happy with the pinch point supplied. Therefore a further LHI bid has been included in this year’s round requesting that the pinch point to be upgraded to a full crossing. Two defibrillators have been installed in Yaxley one fixed outside the doctors surgery and the second, to the new fire station. Thanks to all helping with fund raising to purchase the defibs and weather proof housings, also to Gemma Saunders founder of Defibrillators for Yaxley, for ongoing maintenance of these units. The new junior play area and picnic tables in Middletons recreation ground has been seen as a great addition to the existing play area. We continue to collaborate with local groups, such as Yaxley Countryside Trust led by Reg Bingham and his small band of volunteers, agreeing various

planting schemes, pruning and hedge laying in areas around the village. Councillor Philippa Crooke is leading on the improvement scheme off Seaton Close/Green Lane, working with volunteers. The area is being opened up and self set trees reduced to encourage wild life. We are extremely grateful to Des Watt for supplying the footpath from Seaton Close to the play area, thanks to all concerned. I can say that working with a number of fellow Councillors and volunteers is very satisfying, when you can stand back having learned new skills such as hedge laying, or even just clearing an area knowing you are making long term improvements. If anyone is interested in joining in with volunteer work within the village such as above, please do not hesitate to contact the clerk who can forward your names accordingly. On the downside, one of the continual issues raised by the whole community is that of dog mess. We have installed additional bins, used footpath spray signage and publicised the issue, but this is still a constant concern in Yaxley. Therefore, I ask if you see or know who is avoiding taking responsibility for their pooch, please help the village by taking the time to contact the Huntingdonshire Dog Warden Service who will look to educate and if required prosecute offenders. I hasten to add that it is a minority causing this big and messy problem and thank the majority of dog owners that take responsibility for their dogs. Furthermore can I ask for everyone’s help by reporting acts of vandalism and anti social behaviour, not just to the council

or only on social media, but directly to the police as they cannot act on third hand reports. This then hits the crime figures for Yaxley, helping us raise the need for more local policing. Recent vandalism has cost the community over £2,000 plus loss of income for football matches. Property Committee Chairman Rodney Butcher. This committee meets quarterly and looks after the buildings, maintenance and facilities within. The planned building maintenance program for this year has been completed, thanks to our workforce a majority of this work has been carried out in house making cost savings. Yaxley now has green credentials, having recently added solar panels to the Austin Hall. We are looking to see the benefit coming through on power cost savings for future years. Cambridgeshire County Council have removed the old Youth Porta cabin from Middletons Recreation Ground with no plans for replacement, the Parish Council is reviewing premises and requirements going forward. The planned office extension has commenced and is due for completion by the end of March. This will help greatly with the administration of the village. Planning Committee Chairman Paul Russell. It has been quite a busy year, with the committee meeting every two weeks subject to planning applications, and we have reviewed approx. 80 planning applications. These range from the Roxhill Development 610 houses, through to smaller housing / industrial estates, to single storey domestic extensions and ‘change-of-use’ applications.

We strive to ensure all approved plans are in keeping with the needs of the village, bearing in mind neighbours, the effect on the village, visual impact, traffic concerns and public safety. While we are not always able to get the result we want, we will persevere, promoting Yaxley’s interest. Members of this committee also attend District meetings to put our case in more detail when necessary, so you can see a very busy team of councillors. Looking forward: The Councils action plan looking forward include:l Provision of adult external exercise equipment within the village l Extension to the Skate Park or BMX track l Refurbishment of Queens park facilities heating and lighting l Review building use following loss of CCC youth Club l Working with CCC & HDC to ensure safe walking/cycling routes to the new secondary school at Hampton l Continued financial restraint without loss of key services de livered by the Parish Council. Review While this is not a complete view of the services we are responsible for and deliver, I hope it goes some way to demonstrating the wide range and extent of the works carried out by Yaxley Parish Council. Finally, it has been an extremely busy year. So once again I will thank all the councillors for their time, our personnel as a whole, working to deliver our requirements and not forgetting the band of volunteers delivering a variety of schemes to improve Yaxley. Thank you and here’s looking to the coming year.

Holme Pre-School The children thoroughly enjoyed Valentine's Day this year, especially when we invited our current parents and carers into the setting for some fun. The morning was very well attended and the children were able to show their parents their heart biscuit making skills, painting with flowers, making and decorating hearts and more. It was also an opportunity for parents to see their children in the setting, what they do, enjoy and how they interact with their friends and the team. Learning about celebrations continued with a fun Shrove Tuesday, where the children made real pancakes, art ones too and had some fun team races.

Holme Primary School On Tuesday afternoons, we hold our PE session with the children, which not only helps with their mobility and listening skills, but also practises dressing and undressing themselves. We sometimes have external support for these sessions and one of our visitors was Joe, from the Dalton Peterborough Islanders Ice Hockey, which the children found very exciting and can't wait for their return! As a registered charity, our April fundrasier will be a table top sale on Saturday 22nd April at the Holme Village Hall. If you would like to sell any unwanted items and would like to secure a table, please email admin@holmevillagepre-school.org. uk or pop down between 11am-1pm to grab yourself a bargain!

Yaxley Infants

Last month, the children in Reception had an exciting delivery! Red and Blue class had chicken eggs and an incubator arrive. They watched as the eggs wobbled and heard cheeping from within the eggs just before hatching commenced! The children watched in amazement as the chickens hatched and started to dry and walk around. Teachers used this opportunity to plan two weeks of learning around the chicks. They wrote to the farmer and developed instructions on how to look after and care for them. We also took part in World Book day. Children and adults dressed up as their favourite book characters. Children were asked to plan a meal for their favourite book character. Designs were judged on creativity so that children of all ages could be in with a chance of winning a £5 book token donated by Cambridgeshire Catering Service. The winning design

came from a child in Foundation Stage, who designed a grass chips and a mud pie for Peppa Pig delicious! Parents had the chance to join in with Phonics sessions with their child. We had a great response with some of the sessions which were all fully booked! Parents sat with their child and tackled sounding out words, finding words with particular sounds and in Year 2, they used homophones. Parents were given our new phonics booklets, which can be found on our website http://www.schoolswire.org/public/ infant566.html Last month, we informed you about taking part in the “Read It Again” scheme, run by the Cambridgeshire Library Service. The book that the children picked as their favourite was Lazy Dave. The book tells the story of a dog whose owner thinks is very lazy. Or is he ...

On 2nd May, we are lucky enough to have Keshia Grant from Hertfordshire Mavericks Netball Team. Hertfordshire Mavericks play in the Vitality Netball Super League, which has just started and is the elite netball competition in the UK. For people that are not familiar with netball, Mavericks are the netball equivalent of your Manchester United/Chelsea of the football premier league. They have been champions and runners up over the last few years. Their opening match this weekend was against Team Northumbria and they won 53-48. The captain of Mavericks, Lindsay Keeble, has had 11 caps for England and they have other

players who also play for England. Keisha Grant will be coming to visit/coach at 4:15 after our usual session. Keisha is from New Zealand, a new signing for Mavericks in 2017. Keisha played 2 years in the NZ Championship, her normal position she plays is Centre, and is unusually short for a netball player, so will be good to ask her how she overcomes this! As well as netball, Keisha also played Rugby and was champion Javelin thrower for New Zealand. Some of the Mavericks matches are going to be aired on Sky Sports. Sport England has recently awarded £16.9 million of National Lottery to Netball, and numbers are growing for netball, with projects such as "Back to Netball".

Folksworth Primary We have been really busy at Folksworth over the last half term. We've celebrated St David's Day, Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, Shrove Tuesday and World Book Day. The children have looked at healthy eating and the makeup of a flowers structure - where we fed coloured water through it’s stem system to see what happens to the petals. They have learnt all about measure and who is the tallest and smallest.

The rest of our term will be spent revising the phonics we have already discovered and celebrating Mothers Day and Easter. If you would like to book a taster session with us, then just give us a ring or message us on Facebook. Contact details for the setting are Jade Smith on 07542 172075

Little Acorns Planting seeds to success

We have been celebrating World Book Day here at Little Acorns. The children brought in their favourite book from home and dressed up as their favourite character; they have also made bookmarks to take home and decorated biscuits to look like their character. Our pre-school children have been learning about growing, they have planted some seeds and are enjoying watering them and observing the change each time they come into nursery. We are looking forward to Easter time, where we have an Easter egg hunt planned and lots of craft activities for the children to take part in..

We are now taking bookings for children to start in August 2017. For more information please contact us on 01733244000 or email us on littleacorns.daynursery@yahoo.co.uk

Tom Farmer

“April hath put a spirit of youth in everything. (Sonnet XCVIII)” William Shakespeare, Shakespeare’s Sonnets On the farm, there’ll be frantic nesting (that’s the birds, not us), you’re practically able to see the spring lambs getting bigger (many will be gaining 2 kilos every week at the moment), and every plant is growing fast: grass, wheat, barley, and oilseed rape. In fact, in the second half of April, we get that welcome shot in the arm of the oilseed rape coming into flower, and the merry fields of yellow

Ah April. Happy birthday to me! What a gift of a month April is. With March having disappeared like a lion…or a lamb (I can’t remember which it was supposed to be), April is the month when nature realises that it had better get on if we’re going to make anything of the year. are enough to jolt us out of any persisting winter funk and remind us of summer. Hal Borland’s famous quote, “April is a promise that May is bound to keep” is, I think personified in the rapeseed (or ‘canola’ for our transatlantic cousins) plant and the yellow fills me with excitement and reminds me of long summer evenings, sunshine, and of course, hard work! Hay fever sufferers may not be looking forward to this time with such relish, with the vibrant rapeseed plant getting the blame for sniffles, when many species are erupting with pollen. The ubiquitous hawthorn, for example - favoured hedging plant of the ‘Inclosure Act 1773’ when the open, featureless fields and common lands were cut and bound in the patchwork quilt of hedgerow and fields that we see today – reaches its floristic zenith at the same time.

Perhaps the rapeseed plant has been vilified, and we should instead be seeking out rapeseed oil, which contains the least saturated fat of all oils and has less monounsaturated fat, but a bigger proportion of LDL, cholesterol-lowering polyunsaturated fat, as well as a higher smoke point (making it better for cooking) and a lot more vitamin E than olive oil. That’s the science bit over, but moving on to home economics; you can match your rapeseed oil with seasonal venison, wild garlic, crab, rocket and lamb (ahem, villagefarm.org.uk), and you too will be full of the joys of spring – that’s both literally and metaphorically. Perhaps I should just stick to farming. Wherever you are, have a fantastic April, and thank you for supporting British farmers and fishermen (it’s 2017, perhaps ‘fisherpeople’)!

Big bumblebees

home&garden

This is a time of year when the casual gardener or walker can often be startled by very large bumblebees flying low to the ground - quite often over areas devoid of flowers. You will need:

T

his is not odd behaviour, these are the queen bumblebees and they are looking for a nest site. In fact, they are sniffing for stale mouse urine, as traditionally ground nesting bumblebees use old mouse holes for their nests. Constructing a bumblebee home is relatively simple; find a dry shaded area, bumblebees don't make their nests in direct sunlight. Hedges, banks and along fences make perfect spots.

• Terracotta flowerpot with drainage holes (greater than 200mm in diameter). • Hosepipe (greater than 18mm in diameter and around 200mm long), use a nail or similar to make a series of drainage holes in one side of the hose. • Piece of slate/tile or a matching tray for the flowerpot (this will act as a rain cover for the nest). • Handful of nesting material (ideally from an old mouse nest or straw or moss sourced from wild areas preferably with dry rodent droppings). • A few small similar sized stones.

How to do it: • Dig a small, shallow trench for the flowerpot. • Place the length of hosepipe into the trench, drainage holes down. • Place the nesting material inside the pot and sink the upturned flowerpot into the ground. • Leave the end of the hosepipe exposed. • Place some small stones on the surface of the flowerpot and then place slate on top of the pot to prevent water entering the nest, this helps to circulate air around the nest. Don’t despair if at first you get no bumblebees; you may get a mouse increasing your chances of bees the following year.

REMOVAL OF YOUR OLD TATTOO WHEN IT IS NO LONGER RIGHT FOR YOU

Some people are now regretting tattoos they had when they were younger. Laser Erase offers safe and effective solutions.

T

attoo removal is becoming increasingly popular and several factors need to be considered when deciding to remove a tattoo. The colours used in the tattoo, as well as its size and density, can affect the suitability of a laser removal treatment, also how long it will take, which laser to use, and how effective it will be. It might be that you’re only looking to fade your tattoo so you can have a different design. However, it is essential to discuss these determinants with a trained professional, who can ensure that your tattoo is removed in the safest and most effective way for you. Laser Erase is a purpose-built studio based in Farcet, offering a full laser tattoo removal service at prices starting from £35 depending on size.

READER OFF ER Facials - just £40 (include FRE E diamond suction peel)

Laser treatments for tattoo removal Laser tattoo removal is simple, safe, and produces fantastic results. The advanced technology works by allowing the light and heat produced by the laser to pass through the skin and break up the tattoo ink into tiny particles. The body then disposes of these fragments via its immune system. It usually takes several treatment sessions to ensure success, with minimum 4 week intervals between sessions.

LASER

TATTOO REMOVAL

Removal of all tattoos; colour or dark ink, amateur or professional, small or large.

Rejuvenating treatments A range of rejuvenating treatments, such as radio frequency collagen wave and laser carbon facials, are also avaiable, both of which improve skin tone and stimulate collagen production. For Yaxley Gazette readers we are offering these for just £40.

Phone companies are waging war on

nuisance callers You’re just about to sit down to your favourite soap or are in the middle of cooking dinner / bathing the kids the phone rings - and it's one of those calls.

I

t is estimated that around 30 million nuisance calls are made each week. Did you know that the average Brit receives four nuisance calls a week? More often than not, they are direct sales calls or automated ‘offers’. It is little wonder then that according to research by BT, 60 per cent of people find receiving these

kinds of nuisance and cold calls stressful. BT is one of the companies fighting back, with a new breakthrough service to help manage the situation, by developing a system called BT Call Protect to help customers avoid nuisance calls on their landline - by diverting a whopping 30 million calls a week to junk voicemail. Other service providers are also putting customers first, with Sky and Virgin offering their own system to deal with nuisance calls. Check with your provider to see what they offer. It may be worth mentioning that at Safe Local Trades, none of our professional and recommended tradesmen operate a ‘cold calling’ approach. Our user friendly website www.safelocaltrades.co.uk offers customers looking for a particular

trade the opportunity to contact the professionals through an online enquiry form or by telephoning 0800 014 1832. It’s safe to say that all our time is precious, and we don’t want to be disturbed or harassed in our own homes by these calls. Did you know that there is a way to curb these calls? The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service which enables you to join the official register to opt out of unsolicited sales and marketing calls. Remember, it is a legal requirement for telemarketers NOT to call a TPS subscribed number after 28 days, but you should start noticing a gradual decline once registered. To find out more visit www.tpsonline.org.uk or telephone 0345 070 0707

You can protect your privacy even further by not giving out your telephone contact details to a third party during online surveys, quizzes or competitions. And if you continue to be plagued by people telling you that you have won a dream holiday, offering to help you after your ‘car accident’ or claim to have a PPI reward for you – you can report them online at (https://complaints. tpsonline.org.uk/consumer/ complaint )

by Eileen Le Voi

Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval. Go to www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone 01733 530019

“A coach is someone who gets you to do something you don’t want to do, so you can be who you want to be.” Tom Landry. So do you know when to coach and when to manage? Pick the wrong time or the wrong task and you run the risk of your questions and guidance coming across as critical and patronising. Coaching works best when employees agree they could benefit from learning more and are willing to improve and develop their skills. Motivation is key in the coaching relationship on both sides, as well as openness and honesty. Coaching should not be used to address poor performance issues, where you are hoping employees will have some sort of lightbulb moment and realise how difficult they are being, or how much harder you need them to work. To ensure your coaching is welcomed and effective, it can be useful to use one of the many coaching tools. A particular favourite is the TGROW model by Miles Downey. Coachees are taken through each of the stages: Topic, Goals, Reality, Options and When/Will with the coach asking open questions to guide through each stage. The model is particularly effective because it ensures the person being coached provides the answers and a true picture of their current performance vs. their desired goals. If you would like to refresh your coaching skills, or would benefit from some career or development coaching yourself, get in touch with Gillian at The Training Booth to find out how we can help you.
