So, this is a good time to head out with your camera and enter the Wildlife Trust's Photography Competition (page 13), the theme of which this year is 'celebrating the seasons'. April is also the month of the daisy which appear everywhere as daffodils and flowering trees start to bloom. All of a sudden there’s a load of jobs to do outside and this edition turns its attention to lawn care advice from Green Thumb, to Tandee Nursery for its amazing selection of plants and to growing fuchsias, which are a beautiful and rewarding addition to any garden, if given the right care. For further inspiration for any size of garden or green space, spend an evening online in the green-fingered company of Joel Ashton for top spring garden advice. Author of the popular book Wild Your Garden, and an ambassador for both Butterfly Conservation and the British Dragonfly Society, this informative and interesting evening will be about gardening while 'working with nature, for nature'. Turn to page 13 to find out more. A whole year of coming up with new ideas to entertain the kids has been difficult for some of us, however, we have some fresh ideas to try out over the Easter break. Also, The Great Fen has an eggs-citing trail and has activities celebrating the magic of springtime and the new life it brings. If you are thinking about having a barbecue, you might like visit Hampton Butchers for the fantastic selection of fresh meats they have to offer, including sausages that they make in-house. Whatever awaits you in April – and the rest of the year – be kind to yourself, do the things that make you happy, and believe that things will get better. Happy Easter!

As most people know we have lost our usual venue due to The Lancaster Club deciding not to reopen when lockdown finishes. Our Committee has considered other premises in Yaxley and despite having several halls within the village we were a bit limited on dates and availability so after consulting with members the following decision has been made: When we are able to reopen meetings will still take place on the 2nd Thursday of each month but will be held in the afternoon at Queens Park Pavillion in Daimler Avenue. Hopefully this will suit everyone and perhaps encourage members who prefer to go out in the afternoon rather than evenings, especially in the winter. We still have no reopening date but when we do we will of course let you know in the Gazette. Keep well ladies and with the combination of vaccinations, spring flowers and some sunny days things are starting to feel much better.

Now we are into March and hopefully Spring is well on its way, the mornings and evenings are at last getting lighter. Is it really, almost a year since we first locked down? We are obviously still a little quiet on WI news, but members are still busy behind closed doors knitting, sewing, and now a little gardening, and each month an e-card is sent to all our members as a reminder we are still here. The vaccination program is going well and many of our members have received theirs so hopefully we are heading towards a little more freedom in the not, too distant future. Once again, as before, we now just wait for the Covid situation to improve, so stay safe everyone. Anyone wishing to contact us please email WIholmevillage@gmail.com

Walk Route Instructions 1

Turn right from the library onto the path between the Yaxley Group Practice and the library. Follow it for a few yards then follow the path to the left between the playing fields and the houses. This takes you to Main Street.

At Main Street, turn left and walk for about 15 yards, cross the road at the footpath sign, enter the footpath between the field and the house on the right.

Follow the path to the field keep going until you reach the bridge, cross and turn right following the path around the field.

Keep going as the path narrows behind a couple of houses which brings you out to a road. Turn right follow the road to a path. (Do not cross the bridge). This leads you to behind Yaxley F.C. grounds and allotments. Turn left between the allotments, follow to another road.

Turn left following the road for some distance before turning left between a field and houses. This leads back to the bridge which you cross this time and continue up Askews Lane.

At The top of Askews Lane turn right on Main Street and follow until you reach Middleton’s Road (Flower Shop) bear left and follow all the way to the playing fields where you cross the road and turn right at the entrance pathway through the playing fields. Follow this back to Library.

A) At top of Askews Road cross Main Street and continue up Chapel Street. Turn right into Mountbatten Drive. At the green space turn right and follow the footpath until reach Blenheim Way. Cross this road and continue down the hill to re-join Middleton’s Road by the Flower Shop, etc. B) At top of Askews Road turn right into Main Street. Continue to Community Centre and School on left. Cross the road to footpath and retrace step 1. back to Library. C) At top of Askews Road turn right into Main Street. Continue and crossroad when safe. Turn left into Windsor Road, turn left into Landsdowne Road and continue back to the Library.

New season, new hope – let’s get spring cleaning! The Easter weekend and school break is traditionally a time when DIY-ers and spring cleaners emerge from winter to tackle all those jobs around the home. But as the route out of lockdown brings renewed hope for many of us, there is even more to look forward to when we talk about new beginnings. This may include plans to move house, dreaming of a home or garden makeover, or just a renewed enthusiasm to get your house in order – in the meantime however, there is nothing more satisfying than a spring clean – whether you have five minutes or a whole weekend. Here are a few tips if you are making a start:  Take one room at a time – this way you won’t get overwhelmed by the task; and be ruthless with your decluttering. Ask yourself, does the item make me happy, does it serve a purpose, when was the last time I used it?  In the kitchen – start with the cupboards and then move on to cutlery drawer (tip: soak tea-stained teaspoons in a mug of water with a few drops of vinegar) and then finish with the microwave, kettle and toaster.  When it comes to the bedroom, the wardrobe is usually the biggest issue. Take everything out and discard anything you haven’t worn on the past year or if doesn’t fit. Sell good condition clothes and bag up others for the charity shops.  If you are still working from home, think about how you can improve your working area. Re-assess your space and how you can maintain a clutter-free environment. Go through paperwork, refiling or shredding as you go along. A minimal look will help clear your mind for each working day. Have a digital de-clutter too.  In the kids’ bedrooms, encourage them to go through their belonging and donate any unwanted items to charity (as and when non-essential shops re-open). In return, treat them to some new bed linen and if you want to keep the space as clutter free as possible – some funky storage boxes or containers will give them a reason to keep their room tidy!  If you have taken down numerous paintings, pieces of artwork of photo frames from newly decorated walls, try and get used to living in the space without them for a while, and only put back up what you really want to. Less is more – and besides, you want to show off your fab new walls don’t you? LAUGHTER SUNDAY According to Wikipedia Laughter Sunday is sometimes observed during Eastertide by early orthodox churches, and in Slavic regions today Christians gather for dancing and feasting. This is the time of celebrating the big joke that God pulled on Satan by Jesus rising from the dead. It reminds people that ‘God is a God of laughter as well as sorrow’ (Genesis 21 1-6.)

For many reasons it has been difficult to find things to laugh about during the past 12 months. But even while grieving there can be moments when a memory of a loved one can make us smile. When my Father died the Funeral Director asked me for my Fathers false teeth. I handed the blue tooth pot to him without looking. Later we realised that my Dad now had my Mum’s teeth. I didn’t know they used pink for a boy and blue for a girl! We

couldn’t help but laugh and I said to my Mum “well now Dad will always have a part of you with him”. The words of a lovely hymn include “give us laughter as laughter can banish so much of our strife”. Laughter and love give us wholeness and health, even in sorrow and hours of grief, laughter and tears bring most healing relief”. LAUGHTER YOGA Have you heard about laughter Yoga? I hadn’t until recently. There are books about it and groups you can join, and on You Tube there are short videos. I have found a site called Bollywood laughter yoga. It combines laughter, breathing exercise and movements from Bollywood dancing. I have found it beneficial. It is worth looking it up. Laughter is infectious. We enjoy laughter and good companionship at our monthly Saturday coffee mornings with the many folk that join together in our Chapel. We hope that in the Summer we will be able to start these again. We are unable to open for Easter Services but will continue our online Services on our Peterborough Methodist Circuit Facebook and You Tube site every Sunday from 10.30, and Prayers on Weekday mornings at 8.30. We would love you to join us then or catch up later. Take care and keep safe until we can meet again and share in laughter together..

Dear Friends, I have the privilege and joy of working in our schools, although of course at present it is on the whole virtual through recorded assemblies and Zoom Governor Meetings. One of the things that I have loved doing over the last few weeks is Bishop Stephen’s Lent Challenge with William De Yaxley C of E School. Every year, the Bishop of Ely sets a Lent challenge for schools in this Diocese and this year we are looking at hope, such an important subject for this time when we have been in lockdown for a year and we are hoping to emerge from it gradually over the next few weeks and months. We have many things that we are hoping for as we look to the future around seeing people, hugging people, holidays, meals out…. The list will go on for a while I suspect.

Hope is essential to us as human beings. I have seen what happens when people lose hope, and it can be devastating. The 4th April is Easter Sunday and we hope that we will be able to open the church building that morning for one service. If you would like to come, then please let me know so that we can ensure that we meet safely. Easter Sunday is the ultimate day of hope for Christians as Jesus overcomes death and rose again on that first Easter morning. Light came from the darkness and that hope is always with us as we live and move and have our being following the life of Jesus. I also have some exciting news for our church building. It will remain closed for a few more weeks yet but for positive reasons. We have a building project that should start just after Easter expanding

our facilities for small groups and our young people in particular and will provide better facilities in toilets and kitchen area so that we can be a better venue for the village and that in the future when possible we will have the possibility of hosting things like The Peterborough Winter Night Shelter. We hope that this work will finish at the end of September 2021 with a view for Bishop Stephen to come and visit St Peter’s, Yaxley in October to see our new facilities and bless this work. We also hope that towards the end of the year that we will be able to return to some kind of normality and we have so missed seeing our community at different activities and events. A huge thank you to everyone who has done such an amazing job in raising the funds and doing all the paperwork to get us to this point.

With every blessing as we hope for a brighter future as we approach Easter.

Tax Calculation Advice

The tax year ends on 5 April 2021 and consideration should be given to payments on account (POA) as briefly set out in our January 2021 Newsletter. This gave rise to many questions and enquiries what they are. We therefore explain in a little more detail as below:

What about 2020/2021?

As part of your tax bill you may see an amount called a POA. This is an amount that you have to pay on account based on the tax due in the current year.

2020/2021 started on 06/04/20 and finishes on 05/04/21.

Often people think that they are having to pay tax in advance but actually tax due for the self employed is paid in arrears; by 31 January following the end of the tax year. So 10 months later. HMRC use the POA system to make sure that they have collected at least part of the tax due as you go. It can be rather confusing but let’s take a look at a simplified example which will hopefully explain how this all works: Jane makes £19,500 profit from her small business in the tax year 2019 / 2020 and she has no other income. She is preparing her accounts and submitting her tax return for the tax year 2019/2020; that covers the period 06/04/19 to 05/04/20. Her tax bill for the year (excluding his Class 2 National Insurance (NIC) which are not included in the POA calculation) will be:

Calculating Tax Due Profit less personal allowance = taxable income £19,500 – £12,500 = £7,000 taxed at 20% =£1,400 income tax due Profit – £8,632 = amount subject to Class 4 NIC at 9% £19,500 – £8,632 = £10,868 x 9% = £978.12 Class 4 NIC due Total taxes due and payable by 31 January 2021 = £2,378.12

POA are due when the tax payable for the previous year was over £1,000. However if more than 80 per cent of this tax has already been collected at source, then no POA will be due. POA for tax year 2020/2021 was due on 31 January 2021 and 31 July 2021 i.e. two POA are made each being half of the tax due in the previous year. You can apply to reduce or eliminate your POA, but when the total tax for 2020/2021 is known the POA that would have been due are calculated as being greater than the amount paid interest will be charged on the difference.

Final Tax Payments at 31 January 2021 As Jane’s tax due is more than £1,000, HMRC will expect her to make a POA of half of the total of the taxes due of £2,378.12 including the Class 4 NIC making a POA of £1,189.06 due on 31 January 2021 and 31 July 2021. This makes the total tax due on 31 January 2021 £3,567.18. POA are not a payment in advance, just an interim payment Therefore if possible, you should calculate as close as you can your tax payable for 2020/2021 that will enable whether to reduce the POA. If you made the first POA in January 2021, complete your 2021 tax return (and include any taxable grants received) and if necessary reduce the second POA due in July 2021 if necessary. April is lively month full of spring lambs and calves bursting with joy and reminding us that winter has passed. We enjoy lambing season on our farm and our neighboring Uncle’s farm already has some calves for us to welcome and enjoy. On our farm, the sheep breeds we mostly keepare: Hampshire, Texel, Beltex, Zwartble, Suffolk and mules (a cross, not specific breed). I thought I’d take some time and share some information on a few of Britain’s favourite native sheep breeds and how to recognize them. 1. Cheviot Sheep

These sheep originated from the Cheviot Hills and being an older breed originated as early as 1372. The breed derives its name from a range of hills in north Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. You can recognize this breed with their distinctive white face, picked ears, black muzzle and black feet. They are mainly white in colour with long wool and their head and legs are wool free.

These sheep were developed in England crossing the Southdown rams with Norfolk Horned ewes. It was recognized as a breed as early as 1810.In 1886, the English Suffolk Society was organized to provide registry service as well as provide guidelines for the further developing of the use of the breed. You can recognize this breed by their black faces and their legs from the knee and faces are free of wool. Their stocky body has white wool which forms a sort of collar around their necks. Interestingly, they are very popular in the United States and account for more than fifty percent of the pure-bred sheep registrations in the US.

2. Black Welsh Mountain These sheep originated in the mountains of Wales and were bred from the black sheep that occurred in the Welsh Mountain breed (also called Defaid Mynydd Duon), which interestingly were all white sheep. The Welsh shepherds bred the black sheep together and generated this fine line of what we now know as the Black Welsh Mountain sheep breed. You can recognize them by their dark colour and they too have no wool on their face or their legs. The wool is short, thick and dense and the males have horns.

That’s it from me on recognising some of our favourite sheep as we should let you know that lamb is very much in season in April, and we’ll be delivering boxed lamb throughout the local area in April (as soon as restrictions allow!) – you can order on the website at www.villagefarm.org.uk As spring is beginning to take hold, we are enjoying more time in our garden. It’s rhubarb season and so that does mean a fait bit of crumble is baking in our home. For local British produce, meat and fish this month, be on the lookout for: Asparagus, Cauliflower, Crab, Lamb, Peppers, Purple sprouting broccoli, Rhubarb, Salmon, Spinach, Spring onions, and Tuna (coming into season). Three good larvae Most gardeners recognise the benefits of certain insects, such as the pollination services of bees and other species, and the ladybird munching on aphids, but not so well-known are some of the many beneficial insect larvae that are often confused as pests. In reality, these play a valuable role in controlling common pests. So, here we will take a look at three really useful larval groups ... The parasitic or Ichneumon wasp larvae play an invaluable role in protection against caterpillars and other fleshy plant eaters including sawfly larvae and even aphids. The good work of these larvae is a direct consequence of the work of

the adult wasp. These parasitic wasps lay their eggs inside the bodies of caterpillars via means of a sharp egg laying tube but it is the tiny larvae that then carry out the good work for gardeners by consuming the caterpillar from within. Lacewing larva © Roger Key

The adult wasps are not capable of stinging humans and also carry out a small amount of pollination and indeed Ichneumons are often sold commercially for release in greenhouses. One of the best plants for attracting these handy wasps is the herb, dill.

The gracious lacewing often described as fairy-like due to its translucent veined wings is another beneficial insect that eats aphids but so do its larvae, often in the thou-

sands. Adult lacewings are found in three main colours: green, blue and brown. Again, a great plant to attract lacewings is dill but so too are fennel, coriander and angelica. The hoverly is a great mimic of bees and wasps , one of our best pollinators and worthy of space in our gardens for that alone, but the larvae are predators that consume on average 1,000 aphids. Great plants for attracting hoverflies include dill and lemon balm.

Snap into spring

As spring has now sprung, and the welcome warmer, brighter days are here, trips outdoors with a camera will be something to relish. So, this is a good time to consider entering the Wildlife Trust's 2021 Photography Competition, the theme of which this year is 'celebrate the seasons'. In the annual competition 24 images are selected to appear in the Trust's wildlife calendar – beautiful images taken by keen wildlife photographer Matt Hazleton have been regularly selected. Matt writes: “My subjects change as the year progresses - at the start of any year I try to capture photos of waterbirds, including ducks locally and wading birds further afield. Into spring my focus usually shifts to breeding and migrant birds which look their best at this time. As spring progresses into summer, butterflies and orchids are my main focus, and photographing the common butterfly species is always a highlight of my year with quite a few of my butterfly photos having been part of the Wildlife Trust calendars in the last four years including one in the 2021 calendar. In autumn I start thinking about wading

birds again and while photographing different species throughout the year, wading birds remain my favourite and have been a significant part of my photography right from the start. “My preferred regular locations these days are in Northamptonshire - there aren’t many weeks when I don’t visit the Trust's Summer Leys reserve – in fact all but one of the photos I have contributed to the calendars over the last four years have come from there. I love taking photos of waders so anywhere I can do this will be a favourite. When I get the chance I spend time in Norfolk and I’ve had a few trips to Scotland exploring the Outer Hebrides and the Cairngorms - I’ve only scratched the surface in Scotland though and hope to return once possible.”

He has a wealth of experience through consultations, designing and implementing wildlife gardens, ponds, meadows and hard landscaping projects via his business Hazelwood Landscapes. Passionate about gardening for butterflies in particular, transforming his own back garden into a haven for all wildlife, and having two young children, Joel is keen to encourage, educate and inspire the next generation of wildlife enthusiasts. This will be celebrating the magic of springtime and the new life it brings: visits will include pond dipping to discover the hidden world developing beneath the water, following an egg trail to learn all the many different ways new life is created within them, and other fun springtime activities. Lockdown – Seeds for Schools Whilst many voluntary groups have had to take a step back from their activities this has not been the case for the “Yaxley Countryside Volunteers” (YCV). Following Lockdown 1 last year the group looked at ways to interact with the younger generation. Mrs. Jessie Boucher came up with the idea of getting local school children involved with growing things and obtaining a better understanding of nature through the experience of growing seeds. When the current Lockdown was introduced Jessie swung into action, she quickly recruited Mr. Reg Bingham the Chairman of the YCV and Mrs. Odette Pineger to her team. Reg was tasked recommending and sourcing a suitable range of seeds, Odette a former teacher herself became the sounding board and photographer. The seeds were sourced from John Burrows of Pro – Veg Seeds Ltd of Sawston Cambridgeshire. Two local schools agreed to participate they were Yaxley Infant School and William de Yaxley C of E Academy. Jessie and her

team produced five hundred packs of seeds together with information sheets “Calling All Nature Lovers and All Those Who Want To Learn More”. Jessie also showed an example of a large paper flower with a sponge centre contained within a bottle cap, which if filled with sugar water will help feed Butterflies; the children were given a page of instructions on how to make more. This was supplemented by further information from Reg on the value of hedges and their history. Going forward the YCV offered both schools help with their hedges and fruit trees.

Fuchsia perfect

I love hardy fuchsias. They are some of the most rewarding plants to grow. They are easy to propagate, flower well and are not the least bit temperamental They are named after a 16th Century German herbalist and physician called Leonard Fuchs. Lots of gardeners struggle to spell fuchsia but if you think of his name and stick and ‘ia’ on the end you have it! In mild areas or at the seaside they can grow into huge shrubs. Elsewhere hard frosts see off most of the top growth in winter, then new shoots burst up from the soil in the spring, maturing into small shrubs about 2-3 feet / 60-100cm tall. At this time of year rooted cuttings are cheap. Grow them on for a few weeks under cover, changing the pot to a slightly larger one as they grow, then plant them out in May. Choose a sunny spot in well-drained soil. Make sure you pinch out the shoot tips frequently. It delays the flowers a little but they will become bushy little plants which produce more flowers in the long-run. Once they are mature you can more or less leave them to it. Simply sprinkle a handful or two of fertiliser

around them in the spring and again in the summer. There are lots of lovely varieties. “Mrs. Popple” is tall with red and purple flowers. “Mrs. W. P. Wood” is paler with pearly flowers. I have a soft spot for “Whiteknight’s Pearl” which is a beautiful pale pink. If you have a smaller plot try “Tom Thumb” or “Alice Hoffman”. It’s a little known fact that the berries and inner petals of fuchsias are edible (though it’s worth noting that ‘edible’ doesn’t mean they necessarily taste good!). However there is now a variety bred especially for eating. It’s called “Berry” and produces fruit with a flavour something like a sweet fig. The fuchsia berries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. They don’t have a long shelf life so pick them when they are soft and squishy and eat them fresh, or freeze small quantities as you collect them, until you have enough to make fuchsia jam or add to muffins, much as you might add blueberries. younggazette Folksworth Pre-school Get Booking! 'The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.' (Dr. Seuss) It has been 18 months since we launched our fantastic book-based curriculum at Folksworth. Each class has a set text which forms the centre of their curriculum that half-term, and our imaginative teachers choose them so that they can connect each aspect of the curriculum to the story in some way. This was considered a terrific success by our parents during home-schooling, where teachers recorded audio of themselves reading the text to their students, and the children still took part in our online World Book Day celebrations. During Half-term we also refreshed our library space so it was even more inviting and inspiring for our children when the school opened again. So what has been the impact of all this hard work? We are delighted to be recognised by the Local Authority SIS as now being in the top 10 maintained schools in Cambridgeshire for phonics, and in the top 20 overall. Holme Church of England Primary Academy This year we enjoyed a remote World Book Day. The children and their families were incredibly creative when asked to recreate book covers, ( see photographs). The children have returned to school brilliantly. Naturally, there were nerves, but once in the classroom all the children have settled back into a bit of normal. Most children are seated with their friends. We thought very carefully about the first few weeks back and as well as phonics, reading, writing and maths the teachers have planned lots of active sessions to get the children moving and to get them outside. The children are enjoying our new ‘Active Maths’ sessions. All classes held regular circle time sessions to talk about feelings and to remind the children of how to access support in school.

Teachers have been planning a range of activities to allow the children to reconnect with each other. Taking turns, sharing views, working as a team and learning to compromise has been a huge focus. We have additional members of staff on duty at break times to support with this. The new playground markings are a hit with the whole school community. It is great to hear the sounds of children laughing and enjoying being with their friends. Over the past few weeks we have continued to reach out to the parent community via our virtual Mother’s Day and Easter Services. These are special moments in our calendar and we are keen that these still go ahead. We are proud to be small but mighty! Mrs Thomas (Head of School)

Firstly, we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who asked for their Christmas Trees to be chipped in our charity fundraiser in January. We are pleased to say the day raised over £500 for the Scout & Guide Committee which is especially helpful in a year where fundraising has not been as easy. We had a couple of small teething problems, some very helpful feedback and some other ideas on how to improve on this for subsequent years and will be making sure to organise this in the future. We could not have done this without the generosity and support of John Griffin, the tree surgeon who offered to do this for us and donated his time and equipment to help with this. Thank you so much, John. In other news, we are still searching for people who may want to join our Committee to help support the running of Scouting and Guiding in

This term in Year Four, we have been studying 'Our Local Area and Beyond'. For most of this unit, the children have been studying from home. However, this has not stopped them enjoying the experience of being a cartographer and carrying out field work. We started the unit by sketching the school like cartographers and hopefully we will finish the unit by visiting Burwell near Cambridge. This trip will allow us to compare Burwell and Yaxley currently, but we will also use OS maps to find differences and similarities between the two areas over time starting in the 1950s!

At this time our units are starting to get back to face-to-face meetings and say goodbye to Zoom! Our Preschool children have been learning about potting plants, in preparation for summer. We set up a potting station, supported by resources and provocations so that the children could carry out a practical learning experience. The children are learning about what plants need to grow and what they can do to help. The children have practised potting seeds; caring for them and watching them grow. This is a great learning opportunity for them and is giving them the practise they need in preparation for the larger scale in the garden. Little Acorns and Baby unit have celebrated world book day, we have dressed up in our favourite book characters, read our favourite books and played in story book sensory tuff trays. 1. Prepare for mess Let’s get one thing straight, it is highly likely your cooking session is going to end up in a mess. I advise starting with a tidy cooking area (ie tidy the kitchen bench etc so there is space) but do not bother cleaning the kitchen before your session. Right after you have swept and mopped the kitchen floor, is not a great time to have a cooking session with the kids. Because trust me it is a lot easier to surrender to the mess, if the mess is happening in an already slightly messy kitchen. Dress your kids appropriately. Think more along the lines of the clothes you would have them in for painting, rather than their best outfits.

When you cook with your kids it needs to be at a time when you are calm, have the time, and are absolutely able to surrender to the process. Because cooking with kids, particularly pre-schoolers is about the process, not the end result. It will probably take much longer than you anticipate. You may not end up with much end product (kiddos spilling things, tasting things, inadvertently adding wrong ingredients). So approach it like you would a craft activity for the kids rather than preparing the evening meal. ie do it at a time when you have the time.

3. Measure, measure, measure This tip harks back to tip 5 where I suggest following a recipe. Follow a recipe and get out all the measuring equipment, spoons, cups, jugs, scales. Kids love measuring. They love it, and it’s a great practical way to learn some basic maths.

FUN TO MAKE WITH KIDS

Preparation time: 15 minutes + marinating time Cooking time: 12-15 minutes Makes: 12-16 (depending on case size) Ingredients Cakes  140g soft unsalted butter  140g caster sugar  3 medium eggs

Ingredients  Low-calorie cooking spray  2 onions, finely chopped  4 garlic cloves, finely chopped  100g chorizo, roughly chopped  3 celery stalks, finely chopped  1 carrot, peeled and finely cubed  2 large tomatoes, peeled, deseeded and roughly chopped  300g dried paella rice  4 skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into 2cm pieces  4 tbsp tomato purée  1 tbsp Spanish sweet smoked paprika  Large pinch of saffron threads  200g roasted red peppers in brine from a jar, drained and roughly chopped  200g frozen peas  Handful of fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped, to serve  Lemon wedges, to serve Method 1 Spray a paella pan or large non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium-low heat. Add the onions, garlic, chorizo, celery and carrot and stir-fry for 6-8 minutes, or until softened. 2 Add the tomatoes and cook for 2-3 minutes. Stir in the rice and cook for a further 2-3 minutes, then add the chicken, tomato purée, paprika and saffron. Pour in enough water to just cover the rice, and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3 When there is only a little water left in the pan, stir in the peppers and peas. Continue to cook for 5-6 minutes, or until the rice is just tender and the chicken is cooked through. Add a little boiling water if it gets too dry. Season lightly and scatter over the parsley. Divide between 4 bowls and serve with lemon wedges for squeezing over.

 100g self-raising flour  25g cocoa powder Icing  85g milk chocolate / or plain if you prefer less sweet icing.  85g softened butter (I actually like salted butter for the icing but unsalted works well).  140g icing sugar (sifted)  Mini chocolate eggs of choice for decoration. Method For the cakes: Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5 and put the cases into a fairycake tin. Sieve the dry ingredients into a bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and beat for 2 mins with an electric hand-whisk until smooth. Divide between the cases so they are two-thirds filled, then bake for 12-15 mins or until risen. Cool on a wire rack. For the frosting: Microwave the chocolate on High for 1 min. Cream the butter and sifted icing sugar together, then beat in the melted chocolate. Spread over the cakes and decorate with mini chocolate eggs of choice!

pawsforthought Chocolate Poisoning We’re sure you know, but it's good to reiterate it at this time of year…that chocolate is poisonous for our pets. Mother’s Day and Easter are coming. Poisonings at this time of year are more common, so we thought we’d tell you more about it. There are a few ingredients in chocolate that aren’t good for our pets. The digestive systems of cats and dogs cannot cope with a high content of fats and sugars in their diets and it can contribute to a painful condition called pancreatitis. This is inflammation of the pancreas, the organ responsible for producing digestive enzymes and hormones such as insulin. Once a pet has had pancreatitis, they will often suffer bouts again in the future. It is treatable but can be fatal in some cases. The main poisonous ingredient of chocolate you need to be aware of is a compound called theobromine, which is similar to caffeine. Like caffeine, it is a stimulant and is responsible for the famed lift some people get from eating chocolate. As a stimulant, it affects the central nervous system, increases heart rate, dilates blood vessels and stimulates urine production. In the pet’s body, all this adds up to serious consequences including an often lethal over-stimulation of the heart.

Why is chocolate so toxic to our pets and yet we can eat it with no ill effects? It might surprise you to learn that theobromine can also be poisonous to people! It would just take a very large quantity to have a reaction (so don’t panic, you can still safely eat chocolate). The difference between us and our pets is the digestive systems. Cats’ and dogs’ systems are not as efficient at metabolising (breaking down) theobromine and the process is much slower. This means our pets are far more sensitive to the compound.

Toxic levels Like most poisons, effects are determined by a few factors. Theobromine toxicity levels is dependent on: Type of chocolate – dark chocolate has a higher theobromine content per 100g than milk chocolate Quantity of chocolate – it goes without saying that the more chocolate consumed, the more theobromine that needs to be metabolised by the digestive system Size of pet – it takes less theobromine to reach toxic levels in smaller pets Remember, chocolate is also poisonous to cats, but cases are less common than with dogs.

Ensuring that all our products are of a high standard. Ensuring all our products are processed in a timely and effective manner to the correct level of quality and quantity.

 

Ensring that any documents are read and understood or filled out correctly and that all non-complying products are segregated from good products.

Duties & Responsibilities:  Processing all components manufactured at your machine.  Ensuring that when components are ready for the next stage of production, they are presented in the correct manner for optimum mechanical handling efficiency, are defect free, and correct.  Reading and understanding the job instruction for the product being made on your machine  Carrying out other duties that would assist production as and when required.  Carrying out any other duties reasonably requested to the best of your ability.

Ensuring a smooth operation within Despatch Working as part of the Despatch team.

Primary Responsibilities: Preparing orders for despatch accurately and safely, ensuring product is:  

Safely stacked and banded on the pallet. Checked for quality and appearance

Additional duties will include: 

 



Good housekeeping and general cleanliness of the despatch area at all times including that all products are stored / returned to the correct location and any damages to product are reported. Assisting with stock take when required Carrying out any other duties reasonably requested to the best of your ability Meeting requirements of the core competencies required by the Company

As an operator you will ensure that all our products are of a high standard and that all our manufactured products are processed in a timely and effective manner, to the correct level of quality and quantity. You will also ensure that any documents are read, understood and filled out correctly and that all non-complying products are segregated from good products.
