Local mums children turn in style to ta Yaxley’s seco Jen’. All 128

he race was organised by a group of Foxes class mums from Fourfields Community Primary School, to honour the memory of a lovely class mummy friend Jen Marriott, who sadly lost her battle with cancer in the summer of 2013. The group promised to hold a charity event in her memory each year and the village of Yaxley certainly turned out to do her proud. So far this year, mums have raised over £1,800 for Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall and Cancer Research. The fundraising was started earlier in the year when a cake sale was held at the Rainbow store. We live in an amazingly generous village and we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We must also thank The Three Horseshoes pub for once again letting us take over the pub for the evening. The BBQ was delicious and much needed! Thank you also to our photographer, Clark Howe, to How Safe for printing our T-shirts, the dads who helped with road crossing and so many other friends who all helped along the way. Jen’s mum & sister also organised a raffle on the night which raised an additional £300.

HOLME YOUTH CLUB TO RISE AGAIN?

olme resident Renee Ross, a mother of two, and long-standing member of the Parish Council, writes to say that the closure of Holme Youth Club last year was very disappointing. “I strongly feel the young people in Holme should have something to call their own. As the young people I have spoken to are quite enthusiastic about it restarting I would like to give it another try with two sessions on 11 and 18 September from 6.30-8.30 pm, followed by the AGM on 25 September. All 10-15 year olds who live in Holme, or attend or have attended Holme School, are welcome to come along. Admission fee will be £2 each and a tuck shop will be available. “A few over 18s (no upper age limit!) to assist me as supervisors for the sessions are essential and I would appreciate anyone willing to be DBS checked, or already checked, who can spare a couple of hours a month to please get in touch with me so I can get things started. How are you tackling dementia? Sign up for Peterborough’s Memory Walk

Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue service August Bulletin

round 225,000 people develop dementia every year – that’s the equivalent of one person every three minutes. The effects are more than just losing your keys, as Alzheimer’s progresses, patients suffer severe problems with memory loss, communication, reasoning and orientation. This leads sufferers to develop out of character behavior such as agitation and aggression; in the later stages even difficulty walking and eating unaided. There is a temptation to think ‘it will never happen to me’ however, one in six people over 80 are victims, making it increasingly likely that either you or a loved one will be affected. This September Memory Walks will be taking place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to raise money and awareness for a world without dementia. The Peterborough Memory Walk is taking place at Ferry Meadows Country Park on 20 September. The Alzheimer’s Society would like to encourage as many people as possible to join up and start fundraising today! If more incentive were needed research shows that people who adopt a healthy lifestyle, especially from mid-life onwards, are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease, so sign up today and make a difference to your life and the lives of sufferers all across the UK. When out camping or using a tent, never use candles inside or nearby and always discourage smoking nearby. Never cook inside a tent either. If cooking outdoors, keep barbeques on level ground, never pour accelerant on it and use it well away from fences, sheds and foliage. If you have a bonfire, build it well away from buildings, tents or other flammable objects and make sure it is properly out when you leave. When out in the countryside, extinguish cigarettes properly and dispose of them responsibly – never throw a lit cigarette into a field or wooded area.

Photography Course Winners Announced The latest winner of the ‘Introduction to Digital Cameras’ photo course, run by Richard Houghton of Photous Photography, in Main Street, Farcet, was Jim Davis from Longthorpe.

Family history in Yaxley I am an amateur family historian and have four great grandparents from the Yaxley area; some of their descendants emigrated to Victoria, Australia, in the 1850s in search of riches in the goldfields.

eorge Speechley (b. 1806) married Lucy Coles (b. 1808) and their only child, Judith Elizabeth was born 1832. Lucy died around this time and George married Sarah Dent (b. 1815) and had nine children. Judith married William Woods (b. 1833) in Holme and had eight children in Victoria. Edward Woods (b. 1800) married Mary Coles (b. 1806) and this union produced

12 children, three of whom emigrated. I have a database of around 700 people with the above names along with Abbott, Askew, Axe, Beeby, Beeton, Brains, Curtis, Day, Freeman, Gatwald, Haywood, Lilley, Moyse-s, Preston, Robinet and Ward. I am happy to share my data with anyone with an interest in these families.

Hat Club The shade of the trees in the garden of Mr and Mrs Bliss was very welcome when the Holme Afternoon Tea Club held their annual strawberry tea on 1 July, the hottest day of the year so far. 30 members and guests helped raise funds for the club for the next financial year. Thanks go to all those who attended and all those who helped. HAT Club will meet again on Wednesday, 9 September at Holme Village Hall at 2.30pm, speaker yet to be arranged.

Holme 1940s Weekend It will soon be time for the fantastic Holme 1940s weekend. This magnificent event takes place over the weekend of 3-4 October, with public entry from 10am till 4pm on both days.

Yaxley WI

In June we enjoyed a very interesting talk by Chris Carr on the life of a medieval lady. Surprisingly they didn’t sit around all day gossiping and doing embroidery, but had to run the estate whilst their husbands were away, and tended to their servants aches and pains, as well as the day to day work of the household. Chris very bravely donned authentic clothes consisting of five layers despite it being one of the warmest evenings of the month! On 24 June several members had a historical walk in Yaxley with facts and place details explained by Stuart Howe, Sally Howell and Margaret Long, which proved very interesting and we look forward to further walks. Our July meeting was spent at Holmewood Hall where members and friends enjoyed a delicious cream tea. Highly recommended!

Question: I’ve been told that HMRC have made a U-turn on self-assessment late filing penalties? Answer: Yes, HMRC have relaxed their conditions for accepting appeals against late filing penalties for self-assessment tax returns. This change in practice was first highlighted by The Daily Telegraph which obtained a leaked memo from HMRC. The HMRC position was finally confirmed on 5 June, 2015 after a huge amount of press coverage on the issue. HMRC do not have sufficient resources to check in detail every reasonable excuse offered for a late tax return, so from now on it will accept those excuses on face value if certain conditions are met. Taxman zones in on online traders Thousands of online sellers will need to get their tax affairs in order as HMRC wield expanded powers to get user information from online marketplaces such as Amazon, Gumtree, eBay and Etsy. The clampdown is a continuance of the e-marketplace campaign which initially ran between March and September in 2012. According to HMRC’s press office, the initial correspondence sent to traders to inform them of the campaign was educational. The new crackdown was launched on the back of extensive new powers introduced last year enabling HMRC to download people’s account information. It has been reported that the websites in question are being forced to hand over customer account details, including their selling activity, as part of the taxman’s legal powers. HMRC have avoided stating exactly what the threshold is where an online seller becomes an online trader. Instead, they use the badges of trade as their guiding principle. Some of the 14,000 targeted thus far had made as little as £100 profit online. Anyone just selling the occasional item has nothing to worry about. This is about making sure online traders pay the right tax, ‘wealthy or otherwise’. The campaign has had some notable successes, with one eBay seller who turned over an undeclared £1.4m in six years handed a two year prison sentence. For discussion another day, if you are trading, this income is taxable, but if you are just pursuing a hobby with no intention of a making a ‘profit’, this may not be taxable!

Holme Pre-School

What a busy year it has been for all members of the Fourfields community.

It’s been another busy month for all the Holme Village pre-schoolers.

With the welldeserved break underway, we now look forward to what the new school year will bring. We have seen examples of both the adults and children in our school shining recently. Headteacher Mrs Blyth was thrilled to sing in front of 15,000 people at the O2 Arena. Mrs Blyth described it as the experience of a lifetime. Having kept it as a surprise, her mum is still recovering from the shock of seeing her daughter on stage! As a Level 5 Royal Horticultural Society school, we were also extremely proud that Noah, a Year 4 pupil, was selected as a finalist in the RHS Young Gardener of the Year category. As Head Gardener, he works very hard alongside the equally dedicated Mrs Warrener and Mrs Johnstone to look after our beautiful and thriving garden. He went on to receive a highly commended, which was presented at a special award ceremony. It is fantastic to see when children’s hard work and commitment is recognised beyond the four walls of our school, and we always love to hear about the achievements of all members of our school community. During group time the children were given the opportunity to discuss what they like best at preschool and what they would like us to plan for them. There were some very interesting answers! At the children’s request we have been building dens, castles and dressing up and discovering fairy tale stories. There was no surprise that the children’s favourite story is the Gruffalo, so there have been fun activities based around the characters of the story, which the children have taken great interest in. They have made their own stick puppets and used these to retell the story, they enjoyed a mini Gruffalo hunt finding hidden lettering and they have all helped make an impressive Gruffalo collage for the wall. The weather has been glorious so there has been some great mud pies made in our Mud Kitchen, the children just can’t get enough of

getting messy! We are so proud of our outside area we make sure it is always open for the children to access. Holme Pre-school provides the perfect stepping-stone to Holme C of E Primary School. SCHOOLS SCHOOLS Our Year 6 children enjoyed an end of year treat to Tallington Lakes Adventure Day, where they learnt new outdoors and adventure skills and also enjoyed an evening at Activity World, to celebrate their fantastic SATS results. We have had numerous sporting events this term and we are very proud of our children for their behaviour and achievements, and look forward to sharing more successes in the Autumn term.

Stretton Pre-School Summer Fête a great success despite weather!

Yaxley Infant School As the end of the school year speeds towards us Yaxley Infant School have continued to be very busy. Our whole school creative day started with us splitting into different teams each representing a country from around the world. In our team we spent the morning learning about the country by listening to the music, tasting foods and discovering famous landmarks. We then worked as a team to create the flag from that country. In the afternoon we carried on our creativity by making flags and posters for our very own ‘Race for Life’.

We had over 20 stalls selling all sorts of different products, a bouncy castle and slide, children’s swings, a candy floss stand and an ice cream van. We organised a tombola along with a second hand book and toy stall. Our kitchen was busy making toasted sandwiches and hot dogs which were a huge hit! We ran free craft activities for the children, who also had the opportunity to choose a new name for a teddy that had forgotten his name and take part in our lucky dip. Naturally, we were The next day we had our Fun Sports Day. The weather was great – bright and sunny with just a hint of a breeze to stop us from over-heating – and lots of parents and families came along to support us, even the pre-school came to cheer us on. Each team marched onto the field with their flag to claps and cheers. The children worked together on 12 different activities and collected points along the way. There was fantastic hulahooping, goal scoring, bouncing in sacks and balancing eggs on spoons. The children had a

let down by the English weather, with a rainy day, but despite this the event was extremely well attended by children and parents of the pre-school along with some of the local residents of Yaxley. We are delighted that we managed to raise a huge £1,005 at the fête! This is going to be put towards buying new toys and equipment to aid the development and learning of the children attending both of our pre-school sites. fantastic time and were all very good sports. The winning team, with an amazing 320 points, was Poland, with Italy and Zimbabwe taking second and third places respectively. We are now looking forward to our ‘Race for Life’, where we are aiming to raise £500 for Cancer Research and, of course, our leaver’s assembly, where we will bid farewell to our Year Two leavers, before we all begin the well-earned summer holiday.

peaking with local residents and through obtaining old newspaper articles, we understand that the Fayre goes back over 100 years, originally celebrating Tillaging. Some of the historic photos can be found in the publication ‘Farcet and its treasures’ written by local resident Veronica Woodcock. The parade was well attended, with Twist & Twirl Majorettes leading the way, followed by Farcet pipe band, Brownies, local farmers with their new and vintage tractors, Mr Rhubarb, The Rhubarb King and Queen; even Batman and Captain America couldn’t miss out on this one. Steve Davis, the previous organiser of the Rhubarb Fayre, was honoured by officially opening the Fayre, and crowning the Rhubarb King and Queen. Next year we are encouraging other villages to get involved, maybe bringing their own Prince or Princess? A local resident, Jodie Batch, was in contact with us to tell us that her son Finlay told her “it was the best day of his life”. A visitor to the village said that the evening entertainers, The Fedz, were amazing and “were to good to play in clubs, etc”. It was also so nice to see local residents getting into the spirit of the day by dressing their houses in a Rhubarb Theme.

This was a great event, supported by sponsors, local residents, their friends and neighbouring villages joining the daytime and evening entertainment. The event created a great community spirit with many local community groups, businesses and sponsors benefiting from the event. We are excited to hear that The Old Forge Hair & Beauty Salon, one of our current sponsors, are already engaging with us about sponsorship for next year. If you would like to sponsor the event next year please get in touch. This year we had five months to plan the event, with a small committee to put this event together. I personally would like to thank the committee for all their hard work. We have been overwhelmed with positive feedback and that’s why we have started to plan for next year already, making it bigger and better than before. New managers aim for UCL success It’s been all change at Yaxley FC since last month with manager Brett Whaley leaving to join local rivals Wisbech Town. That will be two interesting matches next season!

Yaxley Methodist Chapel We recently held a Thursday afternoon Fun Quiz in aid of the Sue Ryder Hospice Building Appeal.

t was a lovely afternoon and we hope to arrange another quiz soon. Watch this space! Two days later we held our Summer Coffee Morning with book stall, bric-a-brac stall, raffle and tombola as well as our famous homemade cakes. It was a very successful event and thank you to all who came and joined us. St Peter’s Church From my childhood I remember many expressions which my grandmother used (or misused!). One of my favourites, as a car overtook us at speed, was “oh, he won’t get there any quicker than us”.

f course, he did! I was reminded of this on a recent trip to Birmingham by train. Our train left Peterborough around 30 minutes late due to a “slow moving freight train in front”. It was interesting to note the different reactions of my fellow passengers as we stood on the platform waiting for our train to arrive. Some got very cross and berated the station staff; others shrugged their shoulders and carried on reading. One young couple used the time ‘amorously’. I have to admit to being irritated by the delay, at least for a while, as I’d had to rush from my previous appointment to get to the station on time. Relaxed or irritated, really angry people and lovers all arrived at Birmingham New Street at the same time of course (my grandmother would have been pleased). Some of us used the journey and delay constructively; others just fumed. I know it’s frustrating to be delayed, but maybe we could all try to use such time productively.

We could admire the beauty of creation, send an encouraging text to a friend, pray or something similar. Whenever Jesus was delayed on a journey, usually by people asking him for something, he never got angry. Rather he had compassion and showed God’s love to those who delayed him. Allotments Hard work or relaxing?

llotment – what does this word mean to you? Freedom, boredom, hard work, traditional? Who do you feel an allotment provides for, both in satisfaction terms, as a hobby, and the actual produce grown? Who does an allotment cater for? The old, the young, the retired, the busy dad or mum? Or just anyone with an interest in growing and a few hours to spare each week? The joy is that

anyone with a bit of time and vision can successfully run an allotment. Vegetables don’t magically appear, although we might think they do when we see them packaged up and on display in our local supermarkets. HOME & GARDEN own mistakes often leads to a better understanding of how things work. You do need to know what’s allowed (a tidy plot and well tendered crops) and what’s not (sometimes bonfires, barbed wire and sub letting) and tips on how to get the best bean crop or what to do about slugs can prove invaluable. However, one of the great joys of an allotment is the chance to lose yourself in your own little world. An allotment can be a wonderful place to rediscover a sense of fulfilment, especially if modern day life presents you with many stresses. Mundane jobs such as watering make you slow down and are an excellent time for contemplation. Planning what you want to grow in the cold days of winter helps to remind us that better weather is just around the corner and that whatever happens the seasons continue to change and take us forward in a comforting and controlled way. Late spring and early summer are very busy times on the allotment. There are crops to be sown and nurtured, weeds to be removed, and bugs and other crop threatening creatures to be eradicated. Predominately though, it should be the time you reap the rewards of all your earlier hard work and planning. If you are new to allotments, try simple crops first, but

do remember to sew ones you will harvest and enjoy. Lettuce and other salad crops, runner beans, peas and new potatoes are good choices. Many of us have found, no matter how hard you try, if you have children, they may not appreciate your efforts to grow spinach, kale, chillies and other delights perhaps more suited to the adult palate. Involve the kids in the growing though and they may be open to trying new things – it certainly worked for me with my very sweet small tomatoes. A little early research on what works on surrounding allotments, and how easy certain crops are to grow and maintain, can pay dividends on your own plot. No-one could really argue that an allotment doesn’t involve some hard work, but the benefits usually far outweigh this. However, I have to issue a final word of warning. One of the things I initially found slightly tiresome was the amount of washing the crops needed when you had picked them. Like many people I was used to buying pre-packed from the supermarket; vegetables that had been carefully sorted in the first place so no earwigs, slugs and other creatures were likely to drop out. However, the overwhelming difference in flavour soon made up for any little inconveniences and the sense of achievement was superb.

t’s why vets will often talk about vaccinations, flea treatments and wormers – these regular treatments really do prevent serious and potentially fatal illness and disease. Now, as the weather warms up, people and pets alike will spend more time outdoors. Without scaremongering, it’s important to know about the dangers of the outdoors and how to significantly lower the risk. Worms are nasty parasites that live inside their host in organs such as the intestines, lungs or even the heart. They can cause serious illnesses and infections and can sometimes prove fatal. There are a few facts that many people don’t know: n There are many species of parasitic worms in this country. n The microscopic eggs can hide anywhere and transfer easily on clothing, shoes and pet fur. n They can spread to people!

The eggs are shed into the environment from an infected individual usually through their faeces. Some eggs can survive in the environment for years, even when it’s cold. A shocking 67 per cent of public playgrounds and 75 per cent of sandpits are contaminated with roundworms and their eggs! Tapeworms (a species which can spread to people) can also be transmitted via fleas. Like our pets, people are infected if they ingest the eggs. Which might sound easy to avoid. But if you think how tiny these eggs

are and how easily they can be transferred around, you definitely won’t see them when you reach for that picnic sandwich! Once inside their host the worms can travel round the body before they reach their destination organ (where they end up depends on the species of worms). This migration can cause serious organ damage; roundworms can even reach the eyes where they will cause blindness. Children, the elderly and immuno-suppressed adults are most at risk of serious complications. To protect yourself, your pet, your family and everyone else around you, we urge you to please follow these guidelines: n Always pick up after your dog and clean litter trays regularly. n Give monthly flea treatments to all cats and dogs in your household. n Give worming treatment at least every three months. n Always wash your hands before eating. n Cover sandpits when not in use.

Don’t get stung by holiday scams New figures have revealed that British holidaymakers lost £2.2m in 2014 through a series of internet-based scams, frauds and deceptions.

he National Fraud Intelligence Bureau revealed more than 1,500 cases of holiday booking fraud were reported in 2014. The most common types of fraud related to fake air tickets, bogus online adverts, hacked accounts and dodgy websites, with those aged 3049 most commonly targeted. If you’re looking for a holiday deal, there are easy steps you can take to help safeguard yourself and your holiday.

1. Research your company and accommodation Do conduct thorough online searches to ensure the company’s credibility. Online forums ask for other customers’ experiences. Visit long standing review sites such as Trip Advisor and look at overall customer feedback. 2. Is the company ATOL and/or ABTA registered? By law, every UK travel company that sells air holidays and flights is required to hold an ATOL, which stands for Air Travel Organiser’s Licence. ATOL offers consumers financial protection in the event of a travel company failure or if something goes wrong and you’re stranded abroad. ABTA, the UK’s largest travel body, provides a code of conduct for their members to abide by. Following last month’s paranoid tirade against the yellow and black menace, a new foe has reared its head these past few weeks. It would seem that the entirety of my house and the land surrounding it is about to plunge into a sink hole; a sink hole caused entirely by ants.

s mentioned previously I have been doing my best to become garden-literate this year – I’ve been mowing the lawn, trying to keep on top of the weeds, mourning the death of my pot plants, etc. And yet each time I stop, thinking I’m about to be struck down by heatstroke and the floor is moving beneath me, I look and see that everything is crawling with ants. Front garden, back garden, patio; ants. There are so many of them around right now I can’t help but think they’ve moved on from leaves and bugs to feed themselves; no wonder there are so many missing cat posters up

around at the moment. I don’t even think they are the same type of ants either, as they have different tactics. In the front garden it’s like the savannah, with what looks like termite hills rising out of the lawn, whereas there are deep crevasses between the paving slabs in the back garden. I poured a kettle full of boiling water down after them the other day and it didn’t even touch the sides. At first I didn’t mind. It was just a minor inconvenience when I was mowing the lawn and suddenly the mower would bog down, and a billion lives cried out and were extinguished as I ran over

their ant hill, but now it’s getting worse. I was washing up a few nights ago and I swear I saw my kids’ trampoline moving across the grass. Dealing with them isn’t any easier either. Inside I’m a bit of a nature lover and would prefer not to kill them all, but I’m starting to worry about letting my boys out in the garden in case one of them ends up waist deep in an ant hill. The fact that there’s so many means that I can’t put ant killer down or it’ll end up like a chemical warfare test range, so I’m a bit stuck for options. All I can hope now is for flooding to drown them out, otherwise my house is going to sink into the ground.
