I hope the start to 2017 has been a positive one for you all and that you are keeping to those new year’s resolutions that you set for yourself. As always, there is plenty of information for our readers, including local news and updates from our schools, churches, library and local groups. This month our blogger, Drew Pontikis, takes a satirical glance at the meaning behind Valentine’s Day. Staying on the subject of Valentine’s Day, local lady Nina who runs Elite Flowers is going to be at Serpentine Green on the Monday 13 February 7am-10pm and Tuesday 14 February 7am-10pm, more details on page 15, Please remember to keep supporting local businesses. Our community is really thriving and is great to be a part of . Always let us know if you are investing in the local area, it would be good to hear your story. We’d also like to learn about your triumphs and achievements as a community, charity work, forthcoming events and any information that you wish to share with our readers. Next month, we are hoping to start our regular Yaxley Festival updates, we are working hard to make sure it’s the best one so far! Thanks again for your continued support.

community What’s on in your library Engage in the Afternoon (for adults)

Dear Residents,

On Friday 3 March over 5,000 services will be held in the British Isles on the theme of ‘Am I Being Unfair to You?’ The Christian women of the Philippines wrote the service and it has been translated into 1,000 different languages and dialects, to be used, throughout the whole world, on Friday 3rd March, starting at sunrise over the island of Samoa and continuing until sunset off the coast of American Samoa. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan – named locally as’Yolanda’ – struck the Philippinea islands in the western Pacific Ocean. This is mentioned in the service but you will also hear the stories of a girl, a mother and an older woman, recounting their situations and their hopes and fears. The service focusses on the Bible story of the workers in the vineyard: Matthew 20 v 1-16. There is a reflection on the artwork designed by Rowena ‘Apol’ Laxamana-Sta.Rosa. It is very thought provoking and illustrates contrasting scenes. Why not find out more about the theme, the Philippines and the service? The Day of Prayer is not just for women. Everyone is welcome to attend the service. Service will take place at Anglican Church (hosted by the Roman Catholic community), St Peters Church, Church Street, Yaxley PE7 3LH @ 1.45pm. Women’s World Day of Prayer

It has come to light that there is continued concern with regards to parking in and around Stilton Village. Please can we ask people to be mindful where they are parking and in a manner not contravening the Highway Code. Cambridgeshire Constabulary are working closely with the school, and the parish council with the intention of taking positive action against those who commit traffic offences. Please accept this letter as a polite warning, that should anyone be found parked in a manner that is contrary to the Highway Code they will be dealt with via a fixed penalty notice.

Stories in the Dart Tent

The next event will be held on Wednesday 15 February. The topic this month is Ghost Hunting – Mark Egerton will talk about his experiences as a paranormal investigator and will focus on Huntingdonshire’s ghosts. This is a ticketed event so please book early to avoid disappointment.

HAT Club

Yaxley Singers I start by thanking our audiences that have made our Christmas programme probably one of the best ever for all concerned, not least of all for our chosen charity! Christmas is mainly a time for the time honoured favourites but we found room for some innovations which were very well received! At all of our venues we were pressed to come back ASAP. A couple of weeks rest and our

group will be working away on the programme for our future concerts with different ideas from the vast world of music. The picture above tells its own story of the group’s enthusiasm. Thank you. Vicky Davis.

For people aged 50+

HAT Club was pleased to welcome members, past and present, to an open meeting on Thursday 8 December in the Village Hall. The Yaxley Singers led by Marjorie Richardson, entertained everyone beautifully with a selection of Christmas readings, carols and songs. A special Christmas tea was served. The Christmas hamper was won by Charlie Wilson For a variety of reasons we are unable to continue to run HAT Club in its present form. So sadly, this was the last HAT meeting. However, in the future it is hoped to occasionally organise outings and events. We would welcome any input, volunteers and or suggestions in which older members of the community can participate – contact Sue Knight on 01487 830768.

NSPCC appeals for more volunteers to help local children stay safe from abuse A scheme that empowers children as young as four to stay safe from abuse is looking for more volunteers.

T

he NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe programme has reached nearly 6,000 children in schools in the Peterborough area over the last three years. The initiative is fully ageappropriate and sees assemblies take place with reception and year one pupils as well as more in-depth interactive talks and workshops with older students. Primary school children are taught about different forms of child abuse such as neglect, bullying and physical and sexual abuse and encouraged to speak out about any worries they have with the help of mascot Buddy.

In some cases, the assemblies have even resulted in children reporting abuse, leading to offenders being prosecuted and convicted of their crimes. The NSPCC’s Lisa Hynes recently visited Farcet Church of England Primary School where pupils will also take part in a sporting activity to raise money for the charity. Lisa said: “It is vital that young people know the trusted adults they can talk to and through this programme we can help protect a generation of children. “Our team does a fantastic job in creating a fun atmosphere to educate young people, but

in order to reach our goal of visiting every school in the Peterborough area we simply need more volunteers.” Farcet head teacher Nathanael Robinson said: “The team gave vital advice to the children in an engaging and lively way. “The pupils understood the key messages and can’t stop talking about Buddy. They already

knew what to do in order to keep themselves safe, but they now have an even clearer understanding. They are motivated to take part in the upcoming fundraising activities.” Volunteers will be given extensive training about the NSPCC’s work and the different forms of abuse children suffer and will be required to visit two schools a month.

For more information contact Michelle Newton on 01163 665640 or email michelle.newton@NSPCC.org.uk. Teachers can also request a Speak Out Stay Safe visit to their school via www.nspcc.org.uk.

The December meeting went very well although it now seems a long time ago! Our meeting was opened by our new president Pam Sussex and after minimal business we settled down to enjoy a variety of finger foods followed by games of ‘rock & roll bingo’ The tunes brought back many memories and lots of laughs when the winners were presented with fabulous prizes such as ‘tea for 2’ which wasn’t quite what it seemed. We finished the evening with carols. At our next meeting, to be held at 7.30 on 9 February at the Lancaster Club, Main St, Yaxley we will be entertained by Dorothy Wood talking about ‘Creative Embroidery’ - visitors very welcome.

In January, the ladies of Holme WI enjoyed their annual Christmas meal at the Admiral Well public house in Holme. They all had a fantastic time with great food and company; a good night was had by all! We will meet again in Holme Village Hall on Thursday 2 of February at 7.30pm. We are a group of ladies of mixed ages and backgrounds who like to get together both at our monthly meetings and informally. It would be great if you would like to come and join us, we always meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in the village hall in Holme, a friendly welcome is sure to be waiting for you, please come and join us.

On-call firefighters are a vital part of today’s fire and rescue service, providing an efficient, effective service that gives emergency cover to more than 90 per cent of the UK. In Cambridgeshire they make up 56 percent of the workforce. An on-call firefighter is not based at a fire station but carries a pager and responds to emergency incidents as and when they happen. They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit to being available plus additional payments for attending incidents and drill nights (one evening a week for two hours). On-call firefighters are men and women who may have other jobs and are able to provide evening,

daytime or weekend cover. When they are on-call they may be at home, working for themselves or for a nearby company or out in their local community (staying within a five-minute travel time of the fire station) and are generally located in rural communities, small towns and villages. If you would like to become an on-call firefighter, or find out more, then please go to our website at www.cambsfire.gov.uk and search for on-call firefighter under the careers section.

Bag up to £5,000 for local community projects TESCO is inviting local community groups, green space projects and other organisations to apply for their share of a £12MILLION carrier bag charge fund. The supermarket has teamed up with the charity Groundwork on its Bags of Help initiative, which sees the money raised from the 5p bag levy being used to pay for a large number of local projects to improve green spaces in communities. Tesco customers will decide on a monthly basis which groups receive grants of up to £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 in regions up and down the country.

It’s expected that the new monthly format will see more than 100 projects receiving vital funding across Cambridgeshire every year. Funding will be awarded to projects that use and develop outdoor spaces in ways that will benefit their local community. We’ve already seen local groups, schools and charities benefit and look forward to seeing many more exciting projects come out of this initiative.

churches

Yaxley Methodist Chapel Along with my daughter, I have been privileged to train and volunteer for the Peterborough Night Shelter Project. Money raised at our December and January coffee mornings was donated to the Light Project, to offer help to people who have found themselves in such dire straights that they live on the streets of Peterborough. It has been an eye opening experience to meet and to share in their stories. 7 churches in Peterborough have provided evening meals, beds and breakfasts since mid December and will continue to do so until mid March. These guests are offered fellowship, help and advice to enable them to find a more permanent roof over their heads. One of these churches is in Stilton and another on the London Road.

By working with the Council and the Haven and other organizations, at the time of writing this and only 5 weeks since the start, 20 different guests were welcomed overnight. Three of these people have been moved into accommodation and one has found work. People have been very generous in donating food, blankets and time, and at Christmas, a small gift. We pray that when the Night Shelter finishes at the end of this winter many more will have found a permanent roof over their heads. Our next Coffee Morning will be on the 11 February. Come in from the cold and enjoy some delicious homemade cakes and a hot drink. Sunday Service and Junior Church start at 10.30 am, every week. Children of all ages are welcome.

Everyone is welcome. We would love you to join us. Reverend Gordon Limbrick T: 01733 243170 E: Revgordonlimbrick@gmail.com

St Peter’s Church When I said in a recent interview that Yaxley was a close knit community I was challenged by someone (not the interviewer) to support this comment. I thought I would record here just two of the things which came to my mind in support of what I had said. Firstly, just before Christmas, we gave out hampers from the Food Bank to 29 families. These hampers had a combined weight of 1,138kg – all of which was donated by the local community. I am aware that some of this was donated from people living outside Yaxley. ‘Thank you’ to everyone who so generously donated in order to enable us to support these families in Yaxley and the surrounding area. Secondly, there have been three recent and tragic deaths in Yaxley where the costs of the funeral have been largely or wholly covered by ‘crowd funding’, which is amazing generosity displayed by both those who knew the families and those with no connection at all but who wanted to reach out to a local family in distress. In addition, I know that an With my continuing prayers.

enormous amount has been done by and in the local community to support the bereaved families. When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, he responded by encouraging us to love God with all our heart, body, mind and strength and to love our neighbour as ourselves. Jesus’ response is the focus of our sermons through February and into March. Whether you have a Christian faith or not and wherever you live my prayer is that we would all love our neighbour as ourselves and continue to build our local communities. Through this may we come to know the real love of God. It would also be wrong of me to let the month of February pass without mentioning Valentine’s Day. My congratulations to all those of you who have recently got engaged and who will do so on February 14. If you would like to get married at St Peter’s I would love to hear from you. Please contact me as soon as you can – we already have around 25 weddings booked for this year and 12 for 2018.

A new website has launched to help YPA has been in existence for more than 30 years and has acted as a critical friend to (Yaxley Group Practice) YGP on behalf of the practice patients. In addition, with the support of patients, YPA has raised considerable amounts

of money to purchase extra medical equipment for the benefit of patients using YGP. The Association has reached a point where, in its current form, it is no longer tenable and cannot provide the financial support to secure the services of our librarian who is based at the Practice. It is therefore with much regret that the committee of YPA has decided that the Association will go into a holding mode until the finances are exhausted and at that point will be wound up. We would like to express our thanks to all those who have worked hard over the life of YPA to make the Association such a great success. Special thanks must go to Pat Thomas, Liz Whitehouse and Linda Smith who have acted as our Librarians and have worked tirelessly on behalf of patients. Once the YPA has been wound up if the practice patients want

to keep a voice in YGP then it will be necessary to form a Patient Participation Group (PPG). This is the normal form of ‘patient voice’ in the primary care part of the NHS and such groups exist in many local GP practices, these groups do not fund raise but act as an interface between patients and the healthcare professionals to ensure that patient rights are protected. If patients wish to continue to donate to the practice for the benefit of patients they can continue to do so. If you are interested in being part of a PPG please contact Linda Smith (to the end of February) or Peter Leaton on 07780 915266. Peter Leaton – Chairman Yaxley Health Centre Patients Association

Patients’ Library

As a result of this closure, the Patient Librarian Role and service currently carried out by Linda Smith, will also

sadly cease on the same date. From the 1 March 2017, Yaxley Group Practice Staff and Partners will be signposting Patients and all users of the Patient Librarian Services, to external providers/sources. Yaxley Group Practice is currently putting together a Fact Sheet of these services and contact details and this will be available to all Patients from 1 March 2017. Linda has accepted a new role at Yaxley Group Practice following this closure but she will be moving into a new Administrative role supporting the Finance and Facilities, HR and Business Operations Teams.

Half Day Closing

The Practice will be closed on Wednesday 15 February from 1 – 4pm. We are available for emergencies during that time. Emergency telephone 01733 240478.

good sport Yaxley FC Big month of wins for the Cuckoos If goals are your thing then you should be watching your football at Leading Drove. The Cuckoos’ first team recently despatched local rivals Huntingdon Town 6-1 after beating Harrowby 10-0 the week before. This brought plenty of Christmas cheer to the Cuckoos and at the time of writing we are up to 4th in the division. Buoyed on by their senior club-mates, the Ladies team have been matching and beating those achievements. The U14s beating Milton 15-2 at home whilst the U15s demolished Plantation & Spartak 11-2 away from home. They are results and performances that have left everyone at the club purring. Despite it being the worst time of the football season to be out

watching matches, the attendances across all of the clubs’ teams remains healthy, so we would again like to thank each and every one of you for turning out to support what we are trying to do for the village. It is appreciated. We would also like to take the new year as an opportunity to thank the numerous players, parents, managers and volunteers who are needed to make a nonleague football club tick. Yaxley FC wouldn’t be what it is without you all. The final order of business this month is to plug our facebook page which has all the news, views previews and match reports from across the full spectrum of the club https://www.facebook.com/ YaxleyFootballClub/ See you at the Drove!

Yaxley Yaks Yaks hoping to help get people active in 2017 You might think that a recent survey of Australians shouldn’t necessarily be newsworthy to sport fans and families in Yaxley. This one, however, is key to the sporting landscape in the village and shows a degree of foresight and planning by the Yaxley Yaks rugby club. In terms of participation, touch rugby (the non-contact family friendly version of the code we practice) is now ahead of other forms of rugby and is closing in on cricket. Almost 700,000 play the game and before long the UK will be catching up. It is with that in mind and the feeling that whilst people love the

game of rugby, they are put off by the strong physical nature of it that the Yaks are promoting their brand of the game. Our values are simple - family, fitness and fun - and we look to promote inclusion and enjoyment from the youngest players at the club (4 years old) to the oldest (50 something, they won’t be more specific!). If you are thinking of getting fitter in 2017 and would like to join in with some drills and practice matches then please get yourselves along to Yaxley FC at 9am every Saturday to join the Yaks.

More football sessions for boys & girls With their first squad up and running in the village, ICA Sports Football Club will be introducing additional age groups for both boys and girls during February. On Sunday 12 February a new Under-10 squad will start training for boys in school years 4 & 5, this team will join the Peterborough & District Junior Alliance in September and will play in a range of tournaments in the summer. Then on Saturday 18th February a new Under-6 boys squad will start for boys in Reception & Year 1, providing an enjoyable environment to learn basis football skills. Also on 18 February an all new Girls’ Football Development

Centre will start for 5 to 11 year olds girls, this will complement our hugely successful girls section in Fletton, which accommodates over 100 girls. Players in the Girls Development Centre will benefit from a host of activities that are part of our relationship with Arsenal Ladies under the FA WSL Sister Club program. All squads will run on the new 3G pitch at Middletons Road Recreation Ground in 6 week blocks and each block only costs £20 per player.

If you know a boy or girl that would like to come along to a session you can get in touch with Steve Purnell on 07964 496259 or steve@icasports.com or you can find more about the work of ICA Sports on their website at www.icasports.com Yaxley Yaxley Gazette Gazette || February February 2017 2017 || T: T: 01733 01733 757342 757342 || E: E: info@yaxleygazette.co.uk info@yaxleygazette.co.uk || www.yaxleygazette.co.uk www.yaxleygazette.co.uk

by Drew Pontikis

Hooray for Valentine’s Day! Once more I will spend my day in excited anticipation for the van full of love letters to arrive, and once more I will spend my evening crying despondently into a family size bag of Doritos and loneliness whilst my wife sighs wearily and goes back to her book. It seems that the Valentine’s Day that is conjured up in our collective mind’s eye; the one filled with rose petals, Milk Tray and teddy bears clutching hearts with ‘I wuv you’ embroidered in them, does not exist. Worse still, long gone is the teenage me who’s hope for Valentine’s Day was a date, a good film and the hope of a kiss in the bus station at the end of the night. Gone too are the days in my twenties when the hope was my girlfriend turning up with a bottle of wine and an open mind. Now I am boring and cynical, and in terms of romance, the best I can hope for is sharing a KitKat. If I want to go out with my wife, everywhere’s all booked up; I can’t get into a restaurant because they’re all full of young lovers ordering oysters and trying not to fill up on bread. All the films are terrible and

all the TV channels are showing Love Actually and Bridget Jones on a loop. Things might get so desperate that my wife and I will have to talk to each other. In case my subtle wit hasn’t given away my feelings on the subject, I’m not a tremendous fan of Valentine’s Day. It’s not romantic, nor is it a day off work so I can’t even make a day of it. There isn’t much left to 14 February now, aside from shops trying to convince you to spend your money on tat that your beloved won’t like and doesn’t want (unless its chocolate). How about this instead? If you love someone, tell them. If you want to get to know someone better, ask them. If you’d like to meet someone for something meaningless, swipe right. Seize the day and don’t just sit around waiting for Clinton Cards to tell you it’s the right time of year to do it. www.cambsfire.gov.uk

history Be part of the #Yaxley50 history project Between April 1966 and February 1967 Ronald Moore compiled a Geographical Study of Yaxley in Huntingdonshire. Although the aim of the project was to analyse as many of the aspects of Yaxley’s geography as possible to draw up an overview of the landscape, it also addressed agriculture, industry, buildings and settlement, communications and sociology. In the last issue of the Gazette we explored Yaxley’s industry and agriculture and due to some very positive feedback, we have been inspired to sow the seeds for a brand new local history project. Half a century later we are preparing to start work on a document that explores Yaxley in the present-day and will be a companion to the original, offering an opportunity for comparison and study. #Yaxley50 will be published as both a Yaxley Gazette branded e-book before the end of the year and presented as a travelling exhibition at locations in and around the parish. In order to make the project a success we need help from residents, specifically those who have

memories of Yaxley half a century ago and still live in the village. The 1966-67 study relied upon the input of 50 local residents and 12 local business owners and farmers. Perhaps you may have been one of those contributors or may know someone who was? Perhaps you would like to be part of the new 50 or represent our business community? There will also be an opportunity to meet our team at upcoming events in Yaxley including the Festival in May. To make initial contact and share your initial reminiscences and observations please contact us using memories@ yaxleyhistory.org Back in 1967, the author was also brave enough to make some predictions

about the future of the village, suggesting that a future Yaxley would be split into two distinct areas: a thriving centre on Broadway with all the features of a small town and the old village centred around Main Street, which would most likely become a backwater. Whilst this vision of the future has only in part become reality (Main Street is still very much thriving), it is nonetheless tempting to look forward as part of our project and ponder what our village might look like fifty years from now. We invite your input, which you can share on the Yaxley Gazette Facebook page or on Twitter using the hashtag #yaxley50.

What New Year’s Resolutions? That’s our typical response when asked how our new year’s resolutions – excitedly made and eagerly discussed in early January - are progressing in February. Nearly half of us have already failed to keep our resolutions for even four weeks. I feel that I’m still doing OK in eating more locallyproduced, seasonal, British, quality food, and championing fantastic UK farmers at the same time, but I’ve actually been inspired to do more. While everyone else has joined the gym, I’ve joined the library. Yes, the library. I realised that in the same way that failing to support British farmers will lead to their likely demise (along with all the associated food security, environmental contributions and low food mileage), the same goes for other examples. If we want to see something survive and

Tom Farmer

corner

even thrive, then we should be prepared to support it with our time, with our voice, and with our wallet. We have our milk delivered by the milkman not because it’s cheaper (it isn’t), or because we haven’t the time or transport to buy it at the shop, but because (as well as being better for farmers) it supports a local service that we want to see thrive, and which our older neighbours may rely on (and one day that’ll be us!). So I’ve realized my hypocrisy regarding libraries and I’m now supporting our local one (which I really want to thrive for this and for future generations) firstly by joining, and by encouraging others to (like here: “dear reader, please join; if you’re not already a member, why not check it out!”). As Paul Samuelson said “every good cause is worth some inefficiency”. On the

farm through February, we’re spending a fair amount of time embracing inefficiency for the cause of our Great British countryside, by providing cover for overwintering birds, creating and maintaining wetland ‘scrapes’ for lapwings and wagtails, rotational grazing of livestock, and the supplementary feeding of songbirds. We’ll also be monitoring our bird population in early February as part of the GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count – do get in touch if you want to help us! The count last year recorded nearly half of the UK’s most endangered birds spotted on 970 farms, and the figures are generally moving in the right direction. Finally, when you make your shopping list, don’t forget that this month is your last chance to enjoy seasonal leek, parsnips, and rhubarb. Have a great February!

‘To Infinity and Beyond’ is where we have been this month in Key Stage One! Our exciting trip in January to the National Space Centre at Leicester inspired us to search the galaxy, become space rangers and investigate the world beyond. Star Command have been impressed by our questioning minds and our higher order thinking skills. Year 1 children enjoyed making planets and created the Solar System in their Imagination Zone. Our youngest children in Foundation Stage have become experts in all things animals, reading stories about bears, going on bear hunts, rainbow coloured fish, going to the zoo and ladybirds to give you a few clues, I am sure you know the stories! Their Maths skills have been very useful when

planning with the Zoo Keeper how much food will be needed at feeding time and how the zoo can afford to pay for it. Later this month the children will be visiting Hammerton Zoo to talk to a real life zoo keeper and see the animals they have been learning about. At Yaxley Infant School we are always working on developing the children’s self confidence and emotional well being. Our focus this term is feeling proud, just walking around school, talking to the children it is obvious they all feel very proud of their learning, their ‘can do’ attitude and their enthusiasm to have a go, not being frightened to make mistakes but learning from those mistakes…. What more could we ask.

William de Yaxley

January is traditionally a time for fresh starts and new beginnings. Here at The William de Yaxley Church of England Academy, our choir are fortunate enough to start the New Year with their new polo shirts following sponsorship from Total Clothing. To celebrate they would like to share their wonderful singing with our community. If you have an event that would like them to perform at, Mrs Wharton would love to hear from you so please contact the office. We would also like to introduce our Worship Council. One representative from each class was chosen by their peers, with the aim of giving the children's voice to our collective worship, designing a garden of reflection and bringing new ideas to benefit our local community. Once again if you feel you have a project that the worship council could help with, please contact the school office. Their first task will be to carry out Bishop Stephen’s Lent Challenge for 2017. Watch this space as we will share

the results of their challenges. The New Year is also a time for reflection, and we have been very fortunate to have our local historian Stewart Howe help the children in Year 5 reflect on the history of our village. He took them on an insightful tour of the village, telling them the history of the church and other buildings along Church and Main Street, the children learned how Yaxley has changed over the decades and the origins of some of the street names. Their homework task was to then act as guides for their parents as they took them on a history walk along the same route. We had so many positive comments from parents who were impressed with their depth of knowledge and how much they were able to remember. We would like to thank Stewart, not only for his time but for making it such an enjoyable experience for them. He followed this up by giving the children a presentation, including many artefacts.

Holme school Holme Church of England School is a good school situated in the heart of Holme village. We are a small school with a big heart! We strive to provide a safe, happy, challenging learning environment where all children are supported to reach their learning potential. We have been lucky enough to have some extensive refurbishments to our school as well as a brand new front office, visitor waiting area, small rear

extension and a wonderful new outdoor space for the reception children. If you are looking for a place for your child, we still have a handful of places across the school; please contact Cambridgeshire admissions for more details. In the meantime, please do visit the school website www.holme.camb.sch.uk or telephone 01487 830342. Mrs Allen, Headteacher

We have had a busy January at Little Acorns. The children have enjoyed getting creative and making winter pictures. We have been using different materials and paints to create the children’s masterpieces. We have also been out in the garden exploring the ice and cold weather, we are hoping for some snow so we can build a snowman!

The Rose room are spending more time taking part in Montessori activities, they are enjoying having some more structured activities in there room. We are looking forward to some parents coming into the nursery for lunch with their child in February. The children will help serve the lunch and show their mummies and daddies how independent they can be.

Music For Little People Are you looking for something fun, stimulating and enjoyable that you and your little one can do together whilst meeting new parents? If so, then Music for Little People is just for you!

M

usic For Little People celebrated its 20th birthday in 2016! Classes have been running in Yaxley for 12 years now and for the past 8 years the classes have been taught by local mum of two and ex-primary teacher, Louise Wootton. The exceptional curriculum of songs, instrument time, rhythm exploration and music from many cultural traditions all make the Music For Little People experience unique while developing important speech, listening and motor skills for your child. Classes are split by developmental age from birth to five and follow a familiar structure each week to give children and their grown-ups confidence to enjoy the music making adventure together!

It’s not too late to enroll for the new term. Classes are held at the British Legion Club on Broadway on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for ages 2yrs + and 0-2yrs. Louise also runs classes in Netherton On Mondays and Fridays and Eye On Thursdays. Music For Little People can also provide music for nurseries and Preschool and musical entertainment for parties. “Caitlin attended Music for Little People for approximately 18 months before starting school. She thoroughly enjoyed the group each week and learning new songs and using instruments in a playful way. Louise was always child focused and enthusiastic, and would focus on all children, bringing the quieter ones out of themselves while still giving the more vocal ones a voice.

My daughter has gone on to join the school choir while in reception, through having gained the confidence in group. Also regularly still groups her dolls and teddies to play 'Music for Little People' singing songs and doing the actions that have stayed with her. Thank you Louise” Claire “We love MFLP. Ben has learnt so much and really enjoys the songs during and after the classes. We've both made great friends and Louise is a fantastic leader - always patient, fun and full of energy!” Alison “MFLP is fab. Jessica loves going as do I. Great songs and actions. Louise does a wonderful job. Would recommend it to anyone.” Sarah “My daughter and son love MFLP. Louise is very welcoming and her classes are well organised and

provide a variety of activities which keeps them interested for the whole session. The repetitive and familiar structure of the sessions mean enable my daughter to quickly learn songs and actions and this has helped her gain confidence and join in. I would definitely recommend MFLP” Megan “My little ones have loved every minute of these classes” Lisa “My eldest went to MFLP until he went to school and would still go now if he could! My 3 year old daughter currently attends classes and loves the variety of songs, singing along and joining in with the actions. It has really built her confidence up and she asks all week if it’s MFLP today. Louise is lovely, very welcoming and all the children want to sit with her instead of their parent/ carer!” Nikki

The start of a new year is often when people re-start their thoughts about moving home. But if you are in the process of getting your house sale-ready, it may be worth thinking about some dos and don’ts when it comes to attracting buyers.

A

ccording to a recent survey, which details the 10 biggest issues preventing sellers from getting the asking price when selling their homes, bad smells top the list for homebuyers. Inspired Wallpaper asked 1,500 people what the most likely issues are that would put them off buying a house when viewing a property and 36 per cent said this was the biggest reason. Behind unpleasant smells on the list were bad layouts and DIY disasters, with outdated fixtures and fittings and clutter close behind. In addition 13 per cent named garish décor as their biggest turn-off.

And in 7th position on the list is mould, followed by lack of character and a disappointing garden. The research highlights just how important it is to present your home without these irritations because they could result in lower bids for the property and possibly cost the homeowner a sale. So, if you are looking to sell your home in the near future, and your home is in need of some TLC, call in the professionals to ensure you have the best possible chance of attaining the asking price for your property.

It all happened so quickly! Jill struggled emotionally after the loss of her husband and thought she had the peace of mind that her husband left her £40,000 through a life assurance policy. Jill could not face an immediate return to work. £40,000 did seem a lot at the time, but after only a year away from work the money had gone.

A

year later Jill returned to work but then she was made redundant which really set her back again. Jill found coping with life was difficult but did not want to burden the family with her money problems. The family became aware of Jill’s predicament and Heather her daughter decided it would be beneficial to purchase the home from her mother, letting the home to her mother and sibling. Heather had not realised that letting a property to family members, meant that she now had limited options, a potential tax burden and future financial stress

should her circumstances change. Jill’s and her family’s predicament could have been easily avoided and at a low cost, if she had considered taking some financial advice and putting in place solutions, that would have prevented all this stress. This is a true story with names changed to protect privacy. None of us know what is around the corner…could this happen to you and your family?…if you are not there to protect and look after them who will ? At Vivid Finance we can help you through this. Our first meeting is free and without obligation… so what have you got to lose?

Did you know a mortgage becomes regulated when renting your home to a family member and how this affects you? Please contact Rachel Spencer, Mortgage & Protection Expert at Vivid Finance on 01733 232249 or drop an email to rachel@rgl-ifa.co.uk

Have you still got the ‘best’ mortgage? What do the latest rate cuts mean to your mortgage? Now may (or in some circumstances may not) be the time to shop around depending on your current rate and circumstances, we will help you to check you have got the most suitable option for your needs. At Vivid Finance & RGL we can help you through this. Our 1st meeting is free and without obligation… so what have you got to lose? Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest we will publish them here.

Spam alert: don’t fall for fake HMRC tax refund emails

We have received quite a number of our clients ringing us saying they have received an email from HMRC stating they are due a refund, is this correct?. May we remind clients and readers that HMRC tax refund scam emails are doing the rounds again? Even though it is a standard phishing scam, many taxpayers do fall for it. The worst part is that such emails often contain HMRC’s logo and official style reference which can make it difficult for the individual to detect the fraudulent activity. To save yourself from fraud, please keep in mind the following points: • Have we or your own accountant advised you that you are due a tax refund; • HMRC will never contact you via an email or a text message about anything confidential. They will correspond on the phone or by post; • HMRC will never ask you to disclose sensitive or personal information on email or text, such as your bank or credit/debit card details, or your pin number; • The language used in email spams is frequently poor. If you read them carefully, they are often easy to spot; • Do not visit the website contained within the email. For more details, go to the HMRC website page at www.gov.uk and type “tackling phishing emails” in the search box. An HMRC report states that it prevented 8 million malicious emails from reaching customers between April 2015 and March 2016. Let’s hope we all can make a difference at our level by staying alert. If you receive a suspicious message by email or text, please report it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk

Making tax digital update

We have also received a few enquiries from client’s regarding Making Tax Digital. Over the last summer HMRC published six consultation documents on MTD that set out detailed plans on how HMRC propose to fundamentally change the method by which taxpayers, particularly the self-employed and landlords, send information to HMRC. This will in effect be the end of the tax return as we know it, we will be advising our clients accordingly and full details will be published here when they are fully known.

paws for thought didyouknow? Three dogs (from First Class cabins!) survived the sinking of the Titanic – two Pomeranians and one Pekingese. The three dogs that lived all had one thing in common: they were tiny. So small that the people who were being left behind by the lifeboats probably didn’t notice them being carried along. (Can you imagine being ready to die so someone’s dog could live?)

Mr Fen retires after nearly 45 years at Cromwell Vets As you may well know, the Cromwell Vets has a long history – 105 years and 3 months of history to be exact! Many things have changed over the years but for the last 44 of them, one thing has remained a comforting constant – the presence and leadership of one of our Directors, David Fennell. On the 31 December 2016, Mr Fen (as he’s affectionally known) retired. He joined the Practice in 1972 as a newly qualified Vet from the University of Liverpool. This was a time when the Practice was still run by Ian Hall, (the son of Fred Hall who founded the business) and we looked after both the farm animals and the pet dogs and cats. David became a Partner in 1975 at the young age of 24. The Practice was known back then by the names of the Partners, so it became “Hall, Thurley, Soldan & Fennell” (but the practice was more commonly known by locals as “Halls”). We became The Cromwell Veterinary Group in the 1980s. Many of our Ramsey clients will know David well as he spent many

years of his career at our Ramsey surgery since it opened on the Great Whyte in 1989. It’s a place that has very much become close to David’s heart. It was Mr Fen who founded the “Hunts Vets Emergency Service” which offers out of hours emergency care to all pets. Before then there was only a single Vet “on call”, now there are Vets and Nurses on site (and able to operate) at our fully-equipped accredited hospital 24/7. A service very much used and appreciated by many in Huntingdon and the surrounding area. David was very active in the local community, spending much of his spare time helping the local church and community mainly with youth

activities. David is still very much a member of his local church. With his work at Cromwells and the local community, Mr Fen is very well-known and we still get people come into the surgery and give us snippets of information of “Halls” and their visits to the surgery to see Mr Fen (or indeed from his farm visits). From it’s roots of a small family owned business in 1911, Cromwell Vets has changed over the years, and much of it under Mr Fennell’s leadership. We are proud to still be an independently owned Veterinary Practice in the local area, upholding the values Mr Hall

installed all those years ago, carried through by Mr Fen. One of our current Directors, Joseph Munoz, has said: “After nearly 45 years of committed service, the Directors at Cromwell Vets, Joseph Munoz, Nigel Belgrove and Rachael Day would like to wish David a long, healthy and fruitful retirement which is richly deserved. We would like to express our gratitude to him for being such an inspiring colleague and friend, who has without doubt been instrumental in making Cromwell Vets what it is today. Thank you David!”

For more information, please speak to Cromwell Vets or call 01487 800199. 24hr Emergency Service: 01480 52222

Cosmic Katie‘ s Stars COMMUNITY NEWS

February 2017

health& beauty

By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer

Pisces February 20-March 20

Instead of trying to start new projects, concentrate on finishing up what you’ve already started. Make sure you let down those you’ve been leading on by Valentines Day, or you could end up looking the bully to those watching. Do the right thing and you’ll attract love and fun.

Aries March 21-April 20

Don’t ignore texts and emails but re-read them and, more importantly, reply to them. Your element of fire is pushing you to get a reaction out of a close one which you may regret. Back off and give them the space you need or you may both end up saying things you regret.

VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL ONE DAY ONLY

Taurus April 21-May21

You’re digging your heels in at the moment, which is making it hard for your close ones to get any sort of sensible answers from you. Don’t let pride stop you from admitting what and who you really want. This could be your last chance to lay your heart on the line after last month’s dramatics, so think before you act.

Gemini May 22-June 22 Most people depend on others to gain happiness but, the truth is, it comes from within you. Start living life in a way that makes you happy rather than planning your days to ‘placate’ others. Your career takes you far away and maybe even across waters to find success from the 18th. Cancer June 23-July 23 You’ve learned a lot of lessons recently, most importantly who you could and couldn’t trust. Do you have to let those concerned know of your discovery? No, but you do have to remember how you feel now so that when emotions kick into play you’re not treated as a fool again. Travel links to career goals. Leo

July 24-August 23 You start to make some of the temporary arrangements in your life into more permanent fixtures. Although this is a good thing, it doesn’t come without a little fear thrown into the mix. Sit down and work out what you really want. Knowing these decisions are your own, will see you winning half the mental battle before you’ve started.

What do you get for your loved one on this wonderful romantic occasion? Why not purchase some Arabellaz Gift Vouchers? Ideal for him and her or just someone special in your life. An aromatherapy massage is so sensual!

Call now to book this amazing treatment 01733 241027 All clients who are booked in on Valentine Day will receive Heart Chocolates and Product Sample Bag.

Virgo August 24-September 23

Work has been taking its toll on you’ve have quite clearly been burning the candle at both ends. Try to use this month to sit down and work out a more sensible schedule for your day to day life. A house move or renovation may fill you with dread, but the end results will be worth it.

Libra September 24-October 23 You’re allowing the little things to become big issues in your life, try to take some time out to recharge your batteries and work out what and who your priorities should be. Travel plans make life a more exciting place to be. Money may need to be spent on the home and the longer you delay, the more expense you’ll be incurring.

Scorpio October 24-November 22

This month you start to see how much you’ve been closing yourself off from the world. Opening your mind to new suggestions from those you love can help you to find fresh inspiration. Avoid lying to get out of a work commitment. What you’ve committed to is more important than you could imagine.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21

Don’t be angry at the wrong person this month, which is going to be very easy for you to do. Instead, try to listen to what others are telling you. It’s only by hearing all sides that you’ll be able to judge fairly. The written word by email or text can make or break a friendship so be careful what you send.

Capricorn December 22-January 20 Don’t make rash decisions or you could end up saying and doing things you’ll come to regret. Others may try to push you into what they want, rather than what you need. Friends from far away give you reason to want to plan a journey, but be careful of inviting others you may regret making a part of your plans. Aquarius January 21-February 19 Personal and professional cross paths this Valentines Day and you’ll find it hard to know what to do for the best, for you and the person you’re dealing with. This is a month in which it’s worth acting from the heart. Do what feels right, rather than what looks right. Your future happiness could well depend on it.
