Girlguiding Janice Osborn, Commissioner, Girlguiding Yaxley District
Happy New Year everyone! Let's hope this year is a successful one. Girlguiding in the Yaxley area is hoping to grow sufficiently to provide enough places for the girls who are on our waiting lists. We have a fabulous HQ for the Yaxley groups (Holme Guides and Rangers meet at Holme Village Hall). All we need is YOU to make it possible, because the groups need leaders! If your New Year’s resolutions are to get out more, make friends, stretch yourself, try new things, make a difference or just simply to have more fun, then you may be the right person to help us make it happen. If you have too many commitments to help on a weekly basis, you can still play a role. Can you take part in events, do the catering, look after bookkeeping and accounts or help with physical jobs at the HQ building? Everything is valuable. You can come and try out helping at any (or more than one!) of our Guiding units catering for girls from 5 years old to 18. I hope to hear from you soon! Register your interest online at girlguiding.org.uk or contact me for a chat T: 01487 831451 E:janiceo.girlguiding@gmail.com
Yaxley Flower Club Members are looking forward to local demonstrator Barbara Collins to complete our programme for the year. Barbara’s demonstration on 21 February is entitled ‘Floral Moments’. Meetings are held at the Yaxley Royal British Legion commencing 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome.

We know that your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia increases with age. There are also certain things that will put you at greater risk such as:
Cambridgeshire fire and rescue

Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging residents to register their appliances for a safer 2019. All you have to do is visit registermyappliance. org.uk, and register large appliances bought in the last 12 years. Registering appliances can instantly improve safety in the home as it ensures that householders can be contacted swiftly if a safety repair is ever needed or if an item is recalled by the manufacturer. With many households relying on appliances every day to handle essential chores, chill food and cook for their families, this quick task can give you peace of mind. As an incentive to encourage owners to register their appliances, many of the leading brands on registermyappliance.org.uk are offering to enter registrants into free draws for a range of desirable prizes. Appliances being registered don’t have to be in warranty, or brand new to be applicable.
Get the call... BECOME AN ON-CALL FIREFIGHTER Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking to recruit more on-call firefighters to help serve local communities across the county. CFRS is looking for men and women from all backgrounds to become on-call firefighters and provide emergency cover from either their home or their workplace. On-call firefighters are a vital part of our Service and community. They respond to a wide range of incidents, from fighting fires, attending road traffic collisions, animal rescues to supporting other emergency services. In addition to responding to emergency incidents, our on-call firefighters support their communities by providing information and advice on a range of community safety topics. They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit to being available plus additional payments for attending incidents and drill nights (one evening a week for two hours). It’s a hugely rewarding role, and we hope to encourage members of the community from all backgrounds to get in touch and find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter. With Christmas and New Year behind us our thoughts turn to spring and the start of a new bowling season. The green looks good for this time of the year, although we have been having a little trouble with some unknown animal, possibly a muntjac deer, continually digging up a small patch in the middle. Preparations are under way for our presentations night, which this year will be held again at the Farmers, Broadway, on Friday 1 March. The evening celebrates last year’s club winners and gives members the opportunity to catch up with friends they haven’t seen over the winter. It also signals the up coming start of the new season. Presenting the prizes will be Mrs. Mary Wiles; first official duty as our new President for 2019. Membership renewals are now due. Teams for next year have to be decided and players picked.
As is always the case at the start of a new season we will be actively seeking new members for our club. If you are at all interested, please come along on a Saturday morning to one of our starter sessions, if you can’t make them, there is normally someone at the club most evenings, when the sun is shinning. The green officially opens on Friday 12 April, with our first internal game Presidents v Captains on Saturday 27 April.

YAXLEY WI Our December and January meetings were very different but each enjoyable in their own way. Pauline Brown
HOLME WI
A new year ahead Alison McGuinness President
With the Christmas holidays now over we turn our attention to 2019 and the start of a new WI year. We do not hold a meeting in January, instead we meet for our annual meal at the Admiral Wells. Our year will start with our February meeting and our guest speaker ‘Helicopter Rescue’, I am hoping a helicopter might land in our car park, maybe I am being a little over optimistic, there may not be enough room. In March we will be 70 years old and celebrations are planned for this special occasion. Currently our agenda of guest speakers is organised, with a good variety of speakers arranged, although this year we have only been given some cryptic clues about each speaker, leaving it a surprise on the day. Our Knit and Natter group is still knitting (and nattering), and producing items such as blankets, hats and jumpers at a fantastically fast pace. A trip to Tolethorpe Open Air Theatre is already booked to see Blythe Spirit, as the year gets underway more activities will be arranged for us. Please remember, if anyone is interested in joining please do come along and see what we are about and what we get up to. All ladies will receive a warm and friendly welcome. I would like to wish everyone the best for 2019 and hope it is a peaceful one. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall. For further details please email holmewi@gmail.com
In December, after a delicious buffet provided by the committee, we were entertained by magician Steve Nixon who was also a bit of a comedian! Our January speaker was Alan Peasgood who spoke very knowledgeably about John Flynn and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. It certainly made us appreciate how near we are to our medical services! We were delighted to welcome 5 new members at the meeting, so that was a good start to 2019. The speaker for our meeting on 14 February (to be held as usual at The Lancaster Club) is Julia Harrison, who will be talking about the Associated Country Women of the World, a charity supported by WIs. This will be followed by a cake auction.
Do you need an experienced carer? “I have worked in the care industry for around 25 years” My name is Jenny, I am 45 years old and married with two children. I have worked in the care industry for around 25 years carrying out various roles, from being a deputy manager of Glatton Hall as well as Training facilitator and carer. Up until last July I worked in a residential home in Glatton for 19 years, but this has sadly closed down. Prior to working at Glatton Hall I also worked in the community as a carer for the local council. I’ve now decided to go self-employed and offer my services to the surrounding villages in helping others as a carer, offering continuity and control over the care you receive. I have a wide range of experience in dementia and Parkinson’s and working closely with families in giving the support they may need. I pride myself as being trustworthy, honest and have a passion for giving high quality care to those I look after.
Teddy Bear Ride It was a grim and dark Sunday, on 9 Dec, as 68 die-hard cyclists braved the elements to cycle 30 miles, delivering teddy bears to the NICU/SCBU at Peterborough Hospital. There were three routes to accommodate all abilities of riding. We all met up again in December 2018 at Peterborough Sessions House for a mass departure, now 80 cyclists with two support cars full with over 300 teddies for the kids. We also had a huge raffle which a lot of the local businesses in the village supported. We had £3000 in prizes and raised £1600 and gifted to charities. This ride is now in its 4th year and growing each year.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
A women-led, global, ecumenical movement Come – Everything is ready! Everything is ready and the invitation is for everyone - men, women and children of all ages to join this Day of Prayer. Women of Slovenia, one of the smallest and youngest countries in Europe, have prepared this year’s service and they encourage us to reflect on the barriers they have faced since the end of the Second World War when their country was a part of Yugoslavia, a Marxist socialist republic. They share the challenges they have met and the hopes they have for the future. World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers. The
St Peter’s Church This month feels like a good opportunity to update everyone on the planned building works at St. Peter’s Church.

As many of you will be aware the church is planning to include an extra room upstairs, with a servery below. This work will provide additional space in the church and a servery area much more suited to the community’s needs. It will also allow for the addition of two more toilets. If you would like to view the plans, they are currently on display at the back of the church. At the time of writing, we have received approval for the structural works and have gone out to tender. We are awaiting quotes from five companies which are due back in early February. Following this we will seek ecclesiastical approval from the Diocese and then we can begin to look at dates for the work to commence. Building works will not affect any weddings currently booked into the church. Talking of weddings, we’d like to wish you all a Happy Valentine’s Day and congratulate any couples who have recently got engaged. This month always carries a big focus on love which can stir up a variety of emotions for people; we encourage you to celebrate this day as a reminder of God’s great love for us and ‘Let all that you do, be done with love’ 1 Corinthians 16:14. If you’ve been thinking of coming along to church recently, we’d like to invite you to one of our services. On Sundays we have services at 9am, 11am and 7pm*; there’s something for everyone, come along, just as you are, and someone will be there to welcome you.
preparation for the day is vast. An international committee is based in New York and there are national committees in each participating country. Regional conferences meet to consider the service and then local groups make their plans. Finally, at a church near you on Friday March 1 2019 people will gather to celebrate the service prepared by the women of Slovenia. The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 120 countries. It begins in Samoa and prayer in native languages travels throughout the world - through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas before finishing in American Samoa some 38 hours later.
All welcome
Yaxley Methodist Chapel It is February, the shortest month of the year. It is the last month of the meteorological winter in the Northern Hemisphere. In other words, it means that spring is round the corner and all those lovely things we can look forward to such as lighter nights and shoots popping out of the ground and buds on the trees are soon going to give our spirits a lift once again. Spirits have already been lifted amongst some of the homeless people on our streets in Peterborough. From November the Winter Night Shelters were open in our local churches and they will continue into March. Every week people have been given beds for the night, evening meals and a good breakfast to start the day, all provided by volunteers. Once again there have been successful outcomes proving that with the right kind of help, support and encouragement many have found work and been housed.
According to an internet health site tea can be uplifting and refreshing so maybe you should come and enjoy a cup of tea with us on the 9 February 10am. We call it our coffee morning I know, but we also serve tea and homemade cakes and scones. I am sure that many of you may have found your spirits lifted when you have joined us, having a chat in our cosy Chapel with old friends and new. This Year on the 1 March The World Day of Prayer will be held in the Chapel. It is entitled "Come - Everything is Ready". The Yaxley Churches will be taking part in this Service together. Everyone is welcome to come and join us. Sunday services and Junior Church begin at 10.30am every week. We would be pleased to welcome you.

A Good Read By Willow Coby Justified or not, chick lit gets a bad rap, but not everyone enjoys serious tomes, and if you’re looking for something frothy and fun to throw yourself into, then you can’t go to far wrong when it comes to Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic series. Shopaholic and Baby is the fifth book in the series, and once again features everyone’s favourite shopaholic, Becky. Previous books have seen Becky try to take control of her spending habits by following the advice she frequently gives out as a journalist writing about managing personal finances; have the time of her life living in New York and shopping on Fifth Avenue; and marry her dream boyfriend Luke, whilst loving the excuse to spend more money. Now Becky has something else to spend her money on. Her baby. From designer nurseries to the coolest pram, there seems to be no limit to what she can shop for. That list includes a celebrity obstetrician, Venetia Carter. On meeting her Becky is shocked to discover that Venetia used to date Luke in college. Will Venetia want to get back together with him? Is Becky’s dream marriage under threat? Most women will be able to relate to the insecurities Becky encounters in this novel as her pregnancy progresses and her body changes. In Becky, Kinsella has created a character who is caring, charming, but at the same time, full of flaws. And that is why readers seem to love her so much. Find out more at http://bit.ly/2Cx7WC0
The Secret Seven: The Humbug Adventure by Enid Blyton If you are like me then you probably grew up on a diet of Enid Blyton and a distant world of adventure and fun, where children had far more freedom than we give our offspring these days. This nostalgia probably accounts for the enduring appeal of her books. This Secret Seven adventure features all of the familiar gang, including Scamper the dog, but it is not a story that you may be familiar with. It is a short story, originally published in 1954 in one of Enid Blyton’s annuals. This version, published in 2016, is the first time it has been published in its own right. The gang have been invited to the house of an old professor to look at Jupiter through his telescope. They aren’t particularly looking forward to it and find it boring until they move the telescope around and see someone setting fire to a haystack at Wingfield Farm. Suddenly they are up against time to warn someone before the fire spreads to the nearby barn, and to find out who started it. Aimed at younger readers than the regular Secret Seven books, this is a great introduction to Enid Blyton, with excellent illustrations by Tony Ross, illustrator of the Horrid Henry books. 2019
Looking ahead by Richard S
Cinema goers can look forward to a gluttonous 2019! With so much going on, you would be forgiven for not seeing past the ‘big guns’ flexing their cinematic muscles before our eyes, even before 2018 is over and done with. There is so much to come, having an Unlimited/Discount Pass at your local cinema will look like a shrewd investment come next Christmas! Cinema chains are licking their proverbial lips at the prospect of bumper crowds for arguable some of the most anticipated films since, well, this year. Its just a shame that their prices are increasing and the cost of a night out at the cinema requires a mortgage for a family of 4, regardless of the laxed rules in bringing your own sweets etc. There is something for everyone in 2019, from low budget indie films, to the big budget, heavily advertised behemoths, and the scope of which these films are received is all down to the bums on seats. Critics will savage films that they believe are not Oscar worthy in their eyes however the average cinema goer has differing thoughts and as such, I would urge you to ignore critics reviews of films and watch them for yourselves. Below are just some of the eagerly anticipated films fans have been salivating over with trailers and teasers being released to whet the appetite...
Captain Marvel
An excellent edition to the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe – thank you Stan Lee!) how big a part she will play in the Endgame is, at time of writing, yet to be seen. But being the most powerful superhero in existence, she should play a part in...
Avengers Endgame
The culmination of 10 years excellent service to the MCU and a generations love affair with The Avengers comes to an end, in spectacular style (we hope!)
The Lion King
A live action reimagining of arguably one of the most popular Disney films of all time. And thankfully, James Earl Jones is still around to voice Mufasa! No-one could replace that voice!
Aladdin
Another live action remake of a Disney classic sees Will Smith try his best to emulate the late great Robin Williams. Lets hope this is worth the wait...
Dumbo
One more live action remake... can you see where Disney are heading...?
Glass
The 3rd part of M.Knight Shyamalan's secret trilogy brings 3 excellent characters together in an eagerly anticipated ending to some of the most entertaining films he has produced.
Notable mentions go to
Spiderman – Far From Home, Shazam!, Hellboy, Joker, John Wick 3, Toy Story 4, Lego Movie 2, Star Wars IX, Hobbs and Shaw, Men In Black International, Childs Play, What Men Want, Shaft, It 2, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. So get your cinema tickets at the ready for a blockbuster of a year!

Farcet C of E Primary Our Christian distinctiveness is something that we are very proud of and we are always looking for opportunities to worship together as a school community. Our local church of St. Mary’s is a beautiful place to worship and we all enjoyed a very special end of year service in December. Our school choir continues to go from strength to strength and we were delighted to share our singing in a number of venues throughout December. Shoppers in Serpentine Green were treated to some fabulous Christmas singing as they shopped and members of our community enjoyed some festive tunes at the Salvation Army. Our thanks, as always, to Mrs Bristow who leads our choir. We are a talented bunch here at Farcet and many of our brave pupils demonstrated their talents to the rest of the school during our annual talent show. From gymnastics to beat-boxing and singing to joke-telling it was a morning to remember. We were so proud of all of the acts as well as the wonderful presenters.

On Monday 7 December, Hampton Gardens Year 8 football team played their last 64 National cup fixture against King's School Grantham. The game finished 0-0 and went to a penalty shootout. Jake saved the important sudden death penalty to send Hampton Gardens through to the last 32. Unfortunately The Year 8 boys bowed out of the National Cup on Tuesday 8 January losing 8-1 to Northampton School for Boys.
Premier League Visitor - Football Referee Chris Kavanagh Students had the opportunity to meet professional premier league football referee Chris Kavanagh on Thursday 15 November. Students participated in an officiating workshop and attended a question and answer session.
The Folksworth School PTA did a fantastic job last year and, amongst other investments, raised enough money for the school to purchase 15 ipads for our children. These resources have been available since the beginning of term, and they are already making a terrific difference to the way classes approach their work, and record their achievements. Our thanks go to the PTA team who made this possible, and to everyone who contributed to a PTA event during last year. This technology is particularly relevant this month as we have Safer Internet Day at the beginning of February. The internet is such a rich and fantastic resource for learners, but we need to ensure it is also a safe place for children to explore and engage. This is so important to our school, that we have created a number of ‘Digital Leaders’ – children who are being trained up to become online safety champions for their peers. The theme of Safer Internet Day this year is ‘Together for a Better Internet’…and here at Folksworth, we are certainly demonstrating that.
Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School It’s been a busy month at Little Acorns; we have especially enjoyed messy play. We have been painting, playing in shaving foam, flour and water. The preschool have also enjoyed using the computers, learning to follow instructions to complete simple games! The preschool children are looking forward to their families joining them for lunch at the nursery soon. We have limited spaces left to start with us this school year; we are now booking places for September 2019 and into 2020. Strange visitors at YIS
Year 2 children were surprised to find out that strange visitors had arrived at the start of the Spring Term. Our Caretaker had looked on CCTV to find footage of “alien” invaders at the school. The pictures showed that a flying saucer was hovering above the playground! Our outdoor classroom was also filled with machine parts and strange objects. The children thought about the questions they would like to ask. Later that week Year 1 and 2 visited the National Space Centre in Leicester. The children had a great time and were intrigued with all the space centre had to offer. They
particularly enjoyed the Astronaut show in the planetarium and of course the most important part, the bus journey and lunch! Thank you to all parent helpers for a successful day. Reading continues to be pivotal in our children’s success. To that end we are now sending a Reading newsletter every term. The newsletter will cover all the events like our “Bring our Parents to Phonics” and our well attended “Story Cafés. We will also be informing parents of suggested booklists for each year group, that will be covered in class. Hopefully this extra information will help support parents in encouraging a love of reading at home.
Over the Christmas period we also had a delivery from Early Excellence. Early Excellence are a national provider of high quality furniture and resources for Early Years classrooms. Reception children now have new shelves, dressing up station, large whiteboards and tables to use. This coupled with the new flooring in the Summer has turned our Reception area into an exciting and engaging space for our youngest learners. If you are a prospective parent or would like to be a school governor, please call the school on 01733 240918 or email office@yaxley.cambs.sch.uk

DAY NURSERY & MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Will De Yaxley Vicious Vikings visit William De! On Monday 7 January, William De Year 5 pupils participated in an insightful Viking Day, which was hosted by History Off The Page. The purpose of this event was to give the children a look at what it was like to be a Viking, due to the fact that they are just starting to learn about the topic. During the morning of Viking Day, the enriching opportunities included were; candle making, pottery, making jewellery, creating ink and later on becoming archaeologists. Whilst doing the activities, Jonathan, the host of the educational day, gathered the children to explain how the vicious Vikings lived, in addition to what they did for entertainment. Jonathan, the Chief who was being called ‘My Lord’, led the children through the day with the activities. Another thing that was included was that they got to not only just be Vikings but also be warriors! After lunch, the ‘modern’ Vikings, started digging for ancient Viking possessions. These included; a cow horn, parts of a broken vase and even some (supposedly) historical human bones! While doing this, all of the children enjoyed this game, in addition to after using their knowledge of coordinates to find out where they had unearthed the delicate artefacts. Overall, at the end of the day the children made it clear that they absolutely enjoyed their experience and would definitely (if they could) recreate the Viking Day! This day was clearly a day to remember!

As a charity run preschool, fundraising is key and enables us to be able to continually update and invest in new areas to ensure the children are able to learn and develop before starting school. We are delighted that this year has started extremely well. On our second day back we were very generously donated £500 from Nisa in Stilton in their bid to support local charities. This money is going to be used to develop a science and technology area to ensure children are exposed to these vital skills at an early age. We’re very much looking forward to inviting Nisa back to see how their money has been used once the items have been purchased. We’re a really homely little preschool with a passion to enable children to develop and become confident through play in order to prepare them for starting school. We have children from 2 to 4 years old so our resources need to adapt to their abilities and interests. By the time you’ll be reading this we will have done more fundraising by supporting the Folksworth 15 Yaxley runners race in the form of refreshments. It keeps the committee busy but is very rewarding being able to see their efforts directly affecting the preschool. We look forward to keeping you up to date with all our adventures during the forthcoming year.

Hot on the heals of white January follows yellow and purple February as the crocus come into full flower, brightening our gardens in preparation for spring.
February is also the month when we are most likely to find snow lying on the ground returning to the snowdrop white of January. It is a month of often variable temperatures causing many false starts to the emergence of hibernating animals some of which are sadly caught and killed by the sudden freezing snaps. A warm sunny day may even entice out some overwintering butterflies but more often the air will be filled with the winter gnats. Though active year-round, Winter gnats are most noticeable in the colder months when the males perform their courtship dances. Swarms gather in areas that are kept warmer by the sun. Sometimes following people purely for the heat they give off (though they resemble mosquitoes they do not bite). In low winter sunshine, the reflective wings of the dancing swarms can make them appear like apparitions. In fact, the gatherings are sometimes called ‘ghosts’. These swarms inevitably attract predators too. Small birds snap up the flies for a much-needed protein snack. This act of gathering together to attract mates is known as ‘lekking’ and is thought to make them easier for females to find. Each male flies up and down to his own rhythm, but they cleverly space and pace themselves out to avoid colliding with others in the swarm. If threatened, they are quick to scatter and re-join nearby. Once mated, the female lays her eggs amongst decaying vegetation, which the larvae feed on.

February Ghosts
Tom Farmer
February, that ‘orrible little month that we must all endure to get to March. Right? Maybe not. Did you know that February joined the calendar with January around 700 B.C. It derives its name from the Latin “februa” which means “purification rites”, and it really is a month of purification in the countryside. The cold weather is cleansing the land of disease and last year’s swarms of insects and bugs leaving hopefully just enough to start the cycle again this year. The frosts are breaking up clods of soil and helping aerate the soil when the ice retreats, and the snow and rain is – we hope – replenishing the water supply which is so desperately needed this year. The old country saying is ‘February fill dyke’, as it is the February rains that fill the ponds, ditches, and dykes/dikes/levees. Groundhog Day is observed on February 2nd, each year in North America. On this day the groundhog awakens from his nap and goes outside to see if he can see his shadow. It is believed by many that if the groundhog sees his shadow that there will then be six more weeks of winter. If this is so, he then retreats back into his den to sleep. If he is not able to see his shadow, the groundhog remains outside to play and people celebrate believing that spring is just around the corner. It turns out that it’s not a crazy American tradition, though; Germans practiced the art of predicting the winter with a hedgehog until their arrival in the United States
when they settled in the hills of Pennsylvania, and the groundhog became the official predictor! The tradition of predicting the length of the remaining winter is intertwined with the Christian holiday, Candlemas. Clergy would bless candles symbolizing the ‘light of the world’ to give to their congregations. Another tradition associated with this day is eating crepes. Now crepes, and the light of Jesus, I can get on board with! The 2nd February is also the start of the ‘Big Schools Birdwatch’ which runs for 3 weeks; I wonder how many schools in our area will take part? We’ll be taking part in the ‘Big Farmland Birdcount’ running at a similar time, tracking the numbers of overwintering birds to see how our many wildlife-encouraging measures are impacting our native and winterseasonal population. Wherever you are, whether you’re counting birds, sheltering from the weather, or out there enjoying it, have a great February, and thank you for supporting British farmers. Nb in season in February: brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celeriac, chicory, jerusalem artichoke, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, parsnips, potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli, shallots, swede, turnips, rhubarb, guinea fowl, partridge, pheasant, turkey, venison, and lots of other meats and tasty fish!

Dog training top tips
From pooches to puppies, Dobermans and Great Danes to Labradoodles and Corgis, Britain is a bona fide nation of animal lovers, and K9s are one of our favourites of all pets. It's just a shame so many people have such difficulty keeping their furry friends under control. Shocking stories about dogs gone wild aside, it's safe to say that the vast number of owners do struggle to keep their best friend in check at all times. This is unsurprising, because irrespective of how housebroken they are, we're still talking about a species of animal here, with wildly different behavioural and social tendencies than we twolegged creatures have instilled into ourselves. As such, if they want to run off and chase that bird, then chances are they will try to do just that. It's in their nature. Nevertheless, a poorly trained dog is no good, and can easily become something of an embarrassment. Whether that's going to the toilet in inappropriate places or running riot in the pub, there's no denying we've all seen it happen, and as any expert will tell you, the solution isn't particularly easy. Successfully passing on obedience and good behaviour takes time and commitment, but don't be put off - follow these simple rules and you won't go too far wrong...

Show them what it means to be a good leader Dogs are highly perceptive and have a pack mentality. Set an example for how you want the animal to behave, in order for them to learn and replicate that. Walks must involve discipline Particularly important with puppies. In order to ensure your hound doesn't wind up wrecking the house when nobody is watching, start the day with a disciplined walk, enough to let them work off some energy without returning over-excited. It's also a good idea to walk out of the house ahead of your dog when setting off, so as to show it who's boss. Understand your breed Partly thanks to man's penchant for and understanding of a dog's ability to work, each breed has a host of different personality traits and attributes. It's vital that you understand these in order to successfully train and balance your pet. Allow time for mental exercises, every day Here's where you can make a dog appreciate rules, boundaries and restrictions. Simply giving them a physical run-about isn't enough - their minds need to be stimulated in order to take on board the instructions you're giving them. Assign your dog a task before giving a treat It's no good rewarding the animal for doing nothing if you want to perfect training. By giving it something to do before offering a tasty snack, drink or toy, man's best friend begins to understand that enjoyable things don't come for free.

Mischievous Mutts Dogs will eat all sorts of things and this time of year we see an increase of naughty pups through our doors for this reason. This past December we have seen 50 dogs all needing attention to prevent life-threatening poisoning effects or blockages – we do this by giving them a special drug which makes them vomit to bring up the offending item. This year the assortment included meat netting, socks, hair scrunchie, a sponge, hearing aid battery, chewing gum, mince pies (including some with vodka), christmas cakes, nuts, teacakes, welsh cake, sultanas, grapes, After Eight mints, various milk and dark chocolates, owner’s medication, paracetamol tablets and medication overdose. Some items are indigestible (such as socks) which, if they reach the narrower intestines, could cause blockages requiring surgery. While the other items are digestible, they contain ingredients which are poisonous to our pets. In these cases, if caught early enough, the vet makes the pet vomit in order to minimize the amount of toxin entering the bloodstream. Chocolate is a popular choice for our mischievous mutts.
With Valentine’s Day coming up this month and Mother’s day and Easter just around the corner, we know chocolate will remain high on the offenders’ list.
Chocolate toxicity
The main poisonous ingredient of chocolate is a compound called theobromine. The dogs’ (and cats’) systems are not efficient at metabolising (breaking down) theobromine and the process is slow. This means that our pets are far more sensitive to the compound than we are. Theobromine is a stimulant which can have a serious effect on our pets’ body, including an often lethal, over-stimulation of the heart. It can be deadly – even a small amount! Luckily fatalities are relatively rare (in comparison to the number of cases vets see) and thanks to awareness and prompt veterinary care. Save yourself the heartache this Valentines and please keep those chocolates safely out of reach of your pets.

Exciting trends in
Health and wellness
Plant-based foods, wearable tech, MCT oils, CBD products… The future looks just as bright for 2019, with trends that show an increasing focus on full-body wellness and holistic health. So, here are some trends we're super excited to see in health and wellness this year.
More choices in plant-based alternatives
chictocheek
Plant-based meats and dairy have skyrocketed in popularity in the past few years, with the plant-based food and beverage market growing a whopping 62 percent since 2013 and plant-based alternatives conquering the hearts of omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans alike. Plant-based products have become increasingly common in new supermarket aisles, notably a new vegan range in Aldi. Vegan kebabs delivered to your door! New company Resist Kitchen is a favourite of ours and delivers fresh plant based kebabs direct to your door. At the moment this service is only available at the weekends, but watch this space!
Alternative MCT Oils (and other healthy fats) Coconut oil emerged as a natural health and wellness darling a few years ago due

to its status as an MCT (medium chain Medical studies show that a healthy gut is the triglyceride) it helps stamina, focus and foundation of overall wellness, and more than helps curb cravings. Recommended is ever before, consumers are seeking foods that the Lucy Bee extra virgin coconut oil from support self-care and healthy immune systems. Holland & Barrett - £12. Try some Captain Kombucha ginger and lemon drink £2.99 from Holland and Barratt.
Intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting has become a popular technique for improved weight loss and reduced inflammation. While past science on intermittent fasting has largely centered on the male experience, women are exploring the ways in which intermittent fasting can be targeted specifically to women's health. Expect even more developments on the ways in which this protocol can be adapted for women's bodies in 2019.
Fermented foods, drinks and other digestive wellness products An ever-increasing emphasis on the mind-body-gut connection has emerged in health and wellness circles over the past few years, and as a result, probiotics, fermented foods, and more have been on our minds (and plates). Foods added gut-healthy foods like kimchi and shelf-stable probioticenhanced foods like granola bars, cereal, and butters to their list of trends for 2019.

Wearable fitness tech On the fitness side of things, wearable tech like smart watches, fitness trackers, and heart monitors will likely increase in popularity over the next year. According to one national survey the prevalence of these gadgets makes up the top growth category for fitness trends in 2019, coming in above group training, HIIT, and bodyweight training. One of the favourites this year is Fitbit Versa Smart Watch - £159, available from John Lewis – Peterborough.
CBD Oil There has been a massive growth in the popularity of CBD oil over the past year – there has been many features in the national press on the supplement, exploring the benefits, the cleanest products on the marketplace today, and frequently asked questions about the oil. If you are considering adding CBD to your wellness regime then your first port of call should be new local business Hapi Hemp. They have a superb range of CBD oils, handmade CBD chocolate, CBD teas and topical CBD skincare. All of their products have full lab reports and are UK home office approved. Visit www.hapihemp.co.uk You can also join the Hapi Hemp Facebook group – Hapi Hemp CBD users UK The retailer also notes that non-cannabis derived sources of phytocannabinoids will increase in popularity as they promote the health of the body's own endocannabinoid system.
“It’s clear that hemp-derived products are going mainstream, if not by wide distribution, then by word of mouth.” CBD oils, handmade CBD chocolate, CBD teas and topical CBD skincare Hapi Hemp, prices vary

Top 10 Employer NMW Mistakes by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
There are lots of reasons why an employer might find themselves not paying the national minimum wage (NMW) correctly. To help employers avoid making mistakes HMRC have drawn together a list of the most common causes of underpayment.
1
Failure to apply the annual minimum wage rate increase as rates go up each year on 1 April.
2
Missed birthdays as employees turn 18, 21 or 25 years old and move between NMW rates.
3
Paying the apprentice rate to non-apprentices. Recognised apprentices must have an apprenticeship contract and undergo an element of structured training.
4
Continuing to pay the apprentice rate for too long. The apprentice rate only applies to apprentices under the age of 19, or if aged 19 or over within the first year of their apprenticeship.
5
Making wage deductions for items or expenses connected with the job. This could include safety clothing, uniforms, tools etc.
6
Making wage deductions deemed to be for the employer's 'own use or benefit'. For example a Christmas club saving scheme. It does not matter that the worker can choose to buy into the scheme and the employer does not have to make a profit from it.
7
Charging a worker more than the stated offset rate for living accommodation, currently £49 a week.
8
Not paying for all the time worked such as time spent travelling, training or downtime at the employer's disposal.
9
Not paying for additional time worked such as time spent clearing security checks once a worker's shift has finished.
Including elements of pay that do not count towards minimum wage such as tips and the premium element of pay associated with shift premium.
10
Whichever option you choose, you will get the same dedicated, professional, sympathetic and efficient service.
