As we begin the new year, we often reflect on the past year and mourn chances we didn’t take or connections we didn’t make. Instead of looking longingly backwards, turn to page 6 for help to develop your 2020 vision for the future! We have followed, with great interest, the triumphs and tribulations of Farmer Tom in this magazine for many years. In this issue, on page 8, he is also looking to the future, and in particular, the course for our environment, workforce and wildlife. He urges us to keep moving forward and asks for the continued support of his valued customers. At a time when global environmental problems can seem insurmountable, for anyone making New Year's resolutions to try and make a difference, the Wildlife Trust are offering half-price membership throughout January. See page 15. Please remember to support local businesses and shop local. The money you spend on your doorstep stays within your town and community, thus improving its future. Read our article on page 9 and help us spread the word about our fantastic local businesses in the new year. Always let us know if you are investing in this area, it would be great to hear your story. Don't forget to check out the Yaxley Gazette Facebook group, it has news and information for those in the Yaxley area and is great way to discuss local topics. I would like to say a big 'thank you' to all our advertisers, contributors and readers who have supported us through 2019. Without you, this magazine would not be possible. We closed our year with our Christmas meeting. Where has the time gone?! We enjoyed a lovely talk from our guest speaker Tilly, a lady who is passionate about her work with textiles. She showed us garments from the 1940s, with intricate embroidery and lacework, and the quality of the material used. Tilly teaches textiles and has now written a book and been on the TV. She explained to us that material is the first thing we ever really feel when we are wrapped up as babies, and that different materials can evoke memories and feelings. She uses this when teaching children, and also incorporates natural elements into her work, such as leaves, twigs, bark, shells and stones, making collages and hanging them from branches, keeping the natural theme. Tilly also dyes her own material using natural products such as fruits, vegetables, leaves and bark, and explained how the water used, the different ingredients and the sunlight whilst the material is drying can affect the finished product. Tying knots into the material can create a ripple effect across the material. Tilly enjoys sharing her work with others and the examples of passed around were stunning! A lovely guest speaker and thoroughly recommended. Our Knit and Natter group has just recently sent 40 woolly hats off to the Sailors' Society and donated two blankets of a single bed size, and 8 over-the-knee blankets to the Olivemead Care Home in Yaxley. We now do not meet up again until our February meeting when we start our new year.

We wish everyone a peaceful Christmas and look forward to 2020. Alison McGuinness President

Our November meeting started with the AGM which went very smoothly and with Irene Burnham again being elected our president. Cakes were kindly provided by Joyce Heathcote to celebrate a special birthday and whilst eating and drinking we made paper trees from old books (no first editions!) and although simple, were a bit time consuming, so most people took them home to complete and to decorate if they wished. It was decided that these should be placed upon Christmas boxes as our contribution at the Christmas Tree Festival at St Peter's church, so a little bit different from the conventional trees. At our meeting on 9 January 2020 Anthea Moore will be demonstrating Encaustic Painting. Visitors very welcome at our usual venue of the upstairs room at the Lancaster Club, Main Street, Yaxley, starting at 7.30pm.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas and wishing all a Happy & Healthy New Year. Yaxley Flower Club Our meeting in January is a practical evening. Members will be making either an arrangement with 5 stems or an arrangement in a teapot. The meeting will be on Thursday, 16 January at the Yaxley Royal British Legion commencing 7.30pm. Visitors welcome.

Anyone interested in joining, please do come along and see what we are all about and what we get up to, new members are always welcome. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. Please contact holmewi2015@gmail.com for further details. All ladies will receive a warm and friendly welcome.

Yaxley Bowls

yaxley hub

With the bowls season over our “Green Team” have been spending time tidying up and putting the green to bed for the winter. This year, at no small expense, we had professional help to assist with this major work; hopefully we will reap the rewards next season with a beautiful playing surface. At the Club AGM we saw our long-standing secretary, Kathy Browning, stand down. We all owe Kathy a debt of gratitude after her 15 years of service in the post; Kathy will still keep us on the straight and narrow, with her expertise, as a committee member for the Club. The club is now looking forward to the Club Presentation night in March, at the Farmers. Where will celebrate the Winners of the 2019 season. Mr. Andrew Cooper gets his name on four trophies from the 2019 season and will be our President for 2020; Andrew has also agreed to take over the new press secretary. The final game of the 2019 season, the President’s Bowl was hosted by Mary Wiles. All competitors were treated to a superb tea at the end of the match and it was good to see so many members, past and present, supporting Mary. This was Mary’s Final duty as president and we wish Andrew Cooper well for his year ahead as President. We would like to wish all Gazette readers a very happy and prosperous New Year, and we would very much like to see some of you joining the club when the new season starts in April. Saturday morning starter ‘roll-ups’ begin on the 25 April 10:30am.

Your 2020 Vision for 2020 By Anne McCarthy

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. We often reflect on the past year and mourn chances we didn’t take or connections we didn’t make. Instead of looking longingly backwards, perhaps 2020 is a good year to develop your vision for the future so that it’s…well…20/20! Review your goals — short and long-term

when we’re busy. Are there If there friends and relatives in your contacts list who you haven’t spoken with lately? Use this season to catch-up, reconnect, and nurture the relationships that matter.

Are your everyday activities helping you to accomplish your short-term goals? Are you working on meaningful projects? Make sure at least some of your daily activities help you to accomplish your short-term goals, and that those short-term goals can build to let you accomplish larger goals and objectives. But don’t be a slave to your goals. It’s okay to change directions and shift deadlines. January is a great time revaluate. Are your long-term goals from six months ago still relevant to you today? It can be helpful to write down your goals using pen and paper, and then hang them in a place where you can see them. This acts as a visual prompt to remind you and inspire you during the day-to-day grind.

Request a planning meeting It could be with your boss, or your partner! When you think about the next year — do you see yourself staying at the same job? If so, do you want to be considered for promotion or a transfer? Would you like to plan a big trip with your partner, or start a family? With your boss you might mention projects you’d like to lead, qualifications you’d like to study for. With your partner you might want to talk about joining a gym together, planning a safari, or taking up ballroom dancing. These discussions are useful in both your work and your private life. They can help you understand points of dissatisfaction in your work or relationship and give you the clarity you need to explore a change.

Nurture relationships Sometimes friendships and family relationships get placed on the backburner

YAXLEY

Invest in yourself There’s a difference between being comfortable and being complacent. Try stepping out of your comfort zone and take an online course, sign up with the Open University or night classes at college. Try out a yoga class or a massage, or simply go away with a friend or a partner to a spa for a few days. Reflect on lessons learned January is not all about new beginnings. It’s nice to think about all you accomplished during 2019. What did you learn? What did you achieve? A lot probably happened in the past 12 months, but life moves so fast that too often we don’t take time to reflect on all we’ve learned. Take note of your discoveries and think about ways you can apply those lessons with intention as you move into the new year.

inspire Yaxley Methodist Chapel Here we are at the beginning of 2020 ...

St Peter's Church Dear Friends As I write this we are preparing for Christmas and the birth of Jesus, God’s Son, sent to earth for us. By the time you read this, Christmas Day will have come and gone, and we will be thinking about a New Year, maybe about New Years resolutions or just what this year may hold for us or not. 20 years ago when I was nursing, I had volunteered to work the night shift for the night of 31st December 1999 and 1st January 2000 – the new millennium which I can’t quite believe is 20 years ago now! I have never seen so many staff in the hospital for a night shift and worried looking technicians and managers walked in and out of the ward as we waited to see if planes would fall out of the skies or whether all of our technology would go down at midnight. It came and went without event (although you can usually never describe an NHS night shift as being without event!) but nothing changed, the pumps continued to do their work, the blood pressure machine didn’t break down and the electrical system continued to light the ward lights and work the bell system. There was activity for a few hours and we realised all would be well and we continued our work for the night. As we go in to a New Year we may be going in to this with anticipation, worry, sadness or regret or we may be excited by new opportunities, new possibilities. I am struck thinking again about that Millennium, that there was so much worry and anxiety, yet all continued on. The Bible tells us to “cast all our anxiety on to God, because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5: 7). I hope that whatever the New Year holds for you, that you know the love of a God who cares for you whatever your circumstances.

With every blessing in this New Year Rev Sarah (Vicar) 01733 248690/07498 230858/vicar@saintpeters.co.uk

It is traditional to wish each other a Happy New Year, but for many people, going through difficult times in their lives, this an empty sentiment. Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote that Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come. Maybe wishing Hope and Peace for everyone and for the world is more appropriate. In Greek Mythology, after being warned not to, Pandora opens the box and out fly the evil spirits. Greed, envy, hatred, mistrust, revenge, lust and despair scatter far and wide looking for humans to torment. But at the bottom of the box was Hope waiting to escape into the world! Hope is a simple word and yet it can mean so much to anyone struggling with the thought of what this New Year will bring. The Night Shelter began again on the 25th November, offering a bed, evening meal, companionship, support and hope for the the homeless. Last year was a success for many enabling them to find a roof over their heads and work. We pray we can say the same at the end of March when the programme ends for this year.

Whatever your situation we wish you hope and peace for 2020. Our popular monthly coffee morning will be on 11 January starting at 10 am. Sunday Services start at 10.30 a.m. Everybody is ensured of a warm welcome. Yaxley Methodist Chapel, Main Street Minister: Rev. farmer tom

So here we are, 2020! The 1920s roared; will the 2020s be the same? The 1980s were famous for live aid, power suits, dance music, and the fall of the Berlin Wall. The 1990s were more bright colours and animal prints, BritPop and UK garage. With the turn of the millennium came the indie look, vintage fashion, alt rock, and nu metal. As we have now entered another decade, I wonder what this will be known for? I’m quite accustomed to looking back on fashion disasters, but I hope we also make good decisions to protect our global environment and feed ourselves with care so that our future selves don’t cringe thinking we had the chance to act, but didn’t. You see, we can sequester (store) carbon back into the ground using mob grazing (search ‘Alan Savory TED talk’ on YouTube) and using conservation farming (search ‘Terraton Challenge’

8

or ‘regenerative agriculture’) to lock up the 1 trillion tons of carbon that we’ve released as a species since the industrial revolution, and I really believe that farmers are the solution to all number of planetary woes; I just hope that our government realise it too and support us in doing that. You can’t be green if you are in the red. Will the Agriculture Act of 2020 encourage best practice whilst protecting UK-grown produce from cheap imports produced using less-sympathetic methods lower in animal welfare and taking a greater toll on the environment? As an example of ‘how not to do it’, since the neonicinoid seed treatment ban in recent years, UK oilseed production has fallen away as crops become very difficult to grow profitably and we have come to now import over half a million tons a year from Ukraine where the

banned seed treatments - reputed to harm bees - are used widely. This is not what being a global leader looks like. The UK leads the world in animal welfare (one of only 4 countries rated ‘A’), we have an incredibly restrictive legislative system to protect our environment, workforce, and wildlife, and we steward some of the most beautiful countryside on God’s green earth (just put yourself in the barren monocultures of central America by contrast). Yes we need to keep moving forward (standing still is so boring!), but we’ll need our nation’s backing, and we’ll need your help, dear customer! When you make your shopping list this month you may want to add to British apples, beetroot, cabbage, kale, leeks, parsnips, purple sprouting broccoli, and venison.

Why?

Personalized Service A small business owner will go the extra mile to make you happy. Local businesses are owned by your neighbours and friends. They care about you and are invested in your community.

cook wise business focus

Shop Local in 2020

Unique Products A national chain will sell hundreds or thousands of identikit products. Local stores sell unique merchandise in smaller numbers so you will buy something truly individual. It supports the arts Small local businesses support creativity! Look for art on display created by local artists. These are one-of-a-kind pieces you won’t find anywhere else. It helps the local economy - The money you spend in a local business stays within your town and community, thus improving its future.

How?

Instead of purchasing items from national chains, try to purchase things from a business local to your area. Buy a gift or a gift card at a local business in your area and give to a friend, family member, or co-worker. This will introduce the company to someone new and allow for the “shop local” mantra to spread. Promote their business! If you like a particular shop or independent restaurant share and like their social media accounts. Spread the word. Give them a great review. Send them a thank you. Say why you love them and let them share your testimonial.

Part of the Community during the Festive Season

William De Yaxley CE Academy We are pleased to announce that we have achieved the Silver School Games Mark award for our commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport in 2018-19 This represents a lot of hard work and dedication from our staff and pupils who have committed to attending training sessions and competitions throughout the year. It is also reflective of our intent to deliver high quality Sport and Games Activities within school, as part of our PE curriculum for all children. The School Games Ethos ensures that we value individuals, giving equal access and opportunity to all. We strive to embed a life- long attitude towards sustained participation in sporting activities and physical activity. Our children are encouraged to participate in competitions both within school and with other schools, where they are able to show case their talents and celebrate their personal successes and personal achievements. The qualities of: Determination, Respect, Honesty, Self - Belief, Passion and Teamwork are all encouraged and have been developed throughout the school for all.

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School Firstly on behalf of us all at Little Acorns, we wish you a very Happy New Year. Welcome to all the new families joining us over the next term. We would like to say a big well done to the preschool for their fantastic performance in the Christmas nativity play. We are very proud of you all! The children enjoyed their trip out to the Pantomime to see Cinderella; they had great fun and enjoyed the bus ride too! We are looking forward to lots of exciting plans for the New Year; we will be inviting parents to join us for lunch and trips out to visit the local community. If you are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

In Early October last year the School was invited to take part in the St Peters Christmas Tree Festival. Over the Autumn term we had also welcomed the lovely new vicar Sarah Hare, Susan Delegate and Monty the Bear to deliver assemblies to the children every month. We also have governors at the school who are linked closely with the church, Sparks and the food bank. The school’s annual Christmas Decorations Day allowed us the opportunity to show off the children’s work through the Tree festival. We split the children into mixed aged classes and they worked together to create decorations for the school and our Christmas tree. We named the tree “Tommy Tortoise’s Christmas Tree” after our well-loved character who makes the right choices. You will often hear children in school saying. “I’m being a Tommy Tortoise!” Later in the term, we were also asked by the local Methodist church to take part in their competition to design a Christmas Poster. Sarah, a local teacher who is linked closely with the church, also delivered an assembly to the children and spoke about the importance of Christmas. We had lots of entries with the children completing the challenge at home. In the next Issue we will be able to tell the readers who won. We were also delighted that William De Yaxley had also taken part in the competition. In November, parents were invited to take part in our phonics week. On the Friday Pam Goodwin from the library also led a story session for parents and children. Parents were invited in to listen to a story with their child and complete activities related to the book. Pam read the children the story of `The Queens knickers` by Nicholas Allan, which the children loved, and they went on to design their own knickers!! It was great to see so many happy parents and children throughout our phonics week. It has been fantastic to work closely and support the local churches and library in this way and continue to be part of Yaxley’s close knit community.

It has been a great few weeks of learning here at Farcet.

Kip McGrath Education Centres Peterborough North celebrated a successful 3 years of providing tuition to children in Peterborough by opening a brand new centre - Kip McGrath Education Centres Peterborough South. This new centre is based at 86 Culley Court, Orton Southgate, PE2 6WA. Both centres are managed by the same mother and daughter team of Gill Terry and Becky Thomas.

Our Year 5 and 6 Class have been enjoying their science lessons this half term and used all they have learnt about dissolving and separating materials to become the managers/ scientists of a sewage plant. They made 'sewage', then planned and carried out an experiment to purify the water using their knowledge of materials and solutions. They thought it was disgusting but fun! Year 3 and 4 have been listening to music from around the world as part of their Playlist topic. They have been using an atlas to locate the countries and identify the continents. Year 1 and 2 had a very exciting visit from Black Watch (Stanground Fire Station) as part of their Superheroes topic. They learnt about being a firefighter and the equipment used. They looked inside the fire engine and squirted water from the hose. It was a brilliant morning and the children are looking forward to writing all about what they have learnt. A big thank you to Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service. Our Year 1 and Reception children have been inspired by local artist Lindsay McGinlay. She has demonstrated lots of techniques using paint, inks, paper and card. The children enjoyed asking questions and have been inspired to create their own art work.

Folksworth Preschool The children of Folksworth preschool shone during the Christmas nativity. It was standing room only as the children danced, sung and just had fun as we celebrated coming together during the festive season. Now as we head into the spring term we continue to enjoy the frosty countryside during our walks out in the local community, talking to the children about the life cycle of the plants and trees in our environment. We have a few spaces left for the summer term and will soon be taking reservations for September 2020, so please do get in touch with Niki, preschool manager on 07542 172075 to arrange a visit!

Winter makes the spring Now we are in the depth of winter and facing probably our coldest few months, it is this weather that will determine how spring may start on the pest v predator front. In general terms, a warm, wet winter is bad news whilst a cold, dry one can be good. At first, this may seem counter-intuitive, after all, in a wet, warm winter overwintering flowers, crops and vegetables will be able to grow on, promising an earlier bumper harvest, whilst in the cold dry winter seed may not germinate and growth will be negligible, though too wet and seeds and plants alike may just rot off in the ground. But this is outweighed by the relative impacts of these conditions on our key invertebrates. A warm, wet winter is a real boon for slugs and snails which, instead of hibernating for many months, will remain active, eating and breeding meaning that the spring will be met by a bursting population of plant gorgers. Conversely, our pollinators (such as bees) and our key insect predators (the wider wasp family) prefer the cold, dry winter enabling them to hibernate through a period when food is scarce, to emerge in the spring too warm and they cannot hibernate, whilst dampness leads to the growth of moulds and fungi which, once infected, may prove fatal to these valuable garden friends. Let’s hope it is cold and dry and remember in this case it is important to leave shelter for our growing companions, leave clearing off dead plants, leaf litter and similar until spring thaws the cold and these valuable winter refuges are no longer required. If it is warm and wet try to ensure the availability of some simple flowering plants to replenish our friends if they are forced to seek nourishment.

January Jewels The unmistakable iridescent flash of a kingfisher brings a vibrant glow to a walk by any river or waterway on a winter's day. Incomparable with any other bird seen along a riverbank, these brilliant jewel-bright birds add a touch of magic to the muted hues of winter. Kingfishers nest in burrows in banks, choosing a vertical bank clear of vegetation to excavate; the Wildlife Trust help ensure that suitable nest sites on rivers and streams are kept clear and undisturbed. Restoration work by the Trust keeps river beds clean, especially in areas which accumulate silt. Invasive plants such as Himalayan balsam and giant hogweed die back in winter, leaving the banks bare and vulnerable to erosion which silts up

watercourses, so the Trust clear them away from riverbanks, for instance, in parts of the Fens and along the Bourn Brook in Cambridge. Refuge areas for fish are created with the use of brushwood bundles for bank stabilisation or woody debris in the channel - clearer water makes it easier for a kingfisher to see its prey. Kingfishers can be spotted at the Trust's expansive reserve the Great Fen, most especially along the waterways at Woodwalton Fen.

A GOOD READ

By Willow Coby

Mad Girl

by Bryony Gordon

Mental health is in the news a lot these days with high profile campaigns by the younger royals to raise awareness, and discussions over funding for people who need help. When we talk about mental health it helps to reduce the stigma surrounding the issues, and people have been shown to be more likely to seek help. And this is where the book by Daily Telegraph columnist Bryony Gordon comes in. This is a funny, inspiring, and frank look at mental illness as Bryony recounts her own personal experiences. Starting in her childhood when she developed OCD and bulimia she looks back on her experiences and doesn’t shy away from reality of her life back then. A pervasive fear that she had killed someone but had forgotten about it led to her to try to find some aspect of her life that she could control – which led to the bulimia. Each chapter then leads the reader through different phases of her life as it begins to spiral out of control with drug abuse, before an inspiring trip to the Arctic Circle as part of her job helps her to turn her life around. It was a slow process, but she finally decides to take control and starts on the journey that lead her to the present day. This is a must-read for everyone, regardless of how good, or otherwise your life currently is. We all struggle at times and Bryony’s story provides plenty of food for thought.

Peasant’s Revolt

history

history

Peterborough has a direct link with this extra-ordinary (for its time), first - large scale rebellion to take place in England. A lot of you will also know it as Wat Tyler’s Rebellion. For it to be named as a “Peasants” revolt is a bit inaccurate. A wide spectrum of rural society was involved, including many local artisans and village officials and some minor, local Country Gentry. It began on the 30 May in 1381 and ended in To continue. By now the rebellion had spread the attack on Cambridge University, it was forced November of the same year. Trouble spread as far into East Anglia. The University of Cambridge was to negotiate a new charter, giving up its Royal north as Beverley, York and Scarborough and as attacked, and many royal officials were killed. At the Privileges. The revolt then spread north to Ely, far west as Bridgewater in Somerset. By November same time as these events were unfolding a John where the goal was opened, and the local Justice at least 1500 “rebels” had been killed and most of Wrawe led rebel forces into Suffolk. Wrawe had of the Peace executed. In Norfolk the revolt was led by Geoffrey Litster, the Leaders had been tracked down and executed. considerable influence over the rebels in Eastern There was no one, single cause for rebellion; as England and their numbers almost matched those a weaver and Sir Roger Bacon, a local Lord who had in most cases, when a populace rises up against of London. The local authorities offered very little ties to the Suffolk rebels. On June 17th these rebels authority; there are multiple causes. This was just resistance to the rebels, major nobles failed to gathered outside Norwich and killed Sir Robert after the Black Death of the early 1840s and the organise defences, key fortifications fell easily to Salle, who was in charge of the city defences. New Year, New Home!

By Sarah Davey

It's a sad fact that animal rescue centres are always busier in the period following Christmas. If you've been thinking of acquiring a pet, it’s a good time to consider rehoming one. equally they will need help to settle into their new life with you. The charity will advise about training and behaviour considerations for each cat or dog that’s ready to go to its forever home.

Is my lifestyle suitable for rehoming a cat or dog? What are the practicalities? If you’re at work all day, like to go out for hours and love weekends abroad, your lifestyle may not be suitable to owning a dog. They are pack animals and can become distressed and lonely. A cat, or better still two cats, might be a better choice.

Do dogs and cats find it difficult to adapt to a new owner? Research has shown that dogs and cats dream about their owners (though quite how the researchers knew this wasn't specified!). Being rehomed is stressful, but animals learn to love again surprisingly quickly. Dogs and cats are naturally curious creatures so will quickly begin to explore new surroundings and investigate the inhabitants. If you love animals but don’t feel ready to rehome one, why not consider volunteering for a charity instead. You will learn a lot, and make new friends too, both the human and the furry kind!

I've never owned a pet before. There are thousands of successful pet adoptions each year. Animal charities are always happy to advise on which pet is best suited to your circumstances. They have the best interests on the animal at heart and will not let you rehome any animal for which you are entirely unsuited.

Will my new cat or dog need to be trained? Every animal is unique: it's a myth that all rescue pets are aggressive or timid. But

These cold winter months can be some of the most challenging for pet owners for a number of reasons. Last month we talked about the plethora of festive hazards for opportunistic pets, from toxic foods and poisonous plants to possible perils for dangerous gut obstructions. Another reason is that the long dark and cold nights make it hard to be motivated to go outside. But our pets still need exercise and mental stimulation for their health and wellbeing – all it takes is a bit of adapting and you can still have fun with your pet!

Dogs – As many dog owners will testify, going for a walk is often a highlight of a dog’s day and we’re sure your dog will thank you greatly for continuing to take them. However walking in the dark and cold (which is often the case for working families) can pose a few problems. Stay safe and be sure to be seen by passing traffic by using high-viz and reflective coats or collars on your dogs. There are some great light up collars on the market and some are even bright enough you will be able to see your dog for a good few hundred yards - you could allow some off lead play in a safe park or field. If you don’t feel confident with this, an extender lead is a useful tool to allow your pet to explore a bit further. But please DON’T allow the free or longer extension alongside roads, it is not close enough control – if your dog can walk 6 feet in front of you, they can go 6 feet to the side into the road! One more consideration – many paths will be gritted over icier nights, it

paws for thought

Winter Safety

is good practice to brush or wash your dog’s feet after going out as the salt and grit can be an irritant.

Cats – Some cats prefer not to go out

during the colder weather, but if they usually do it’s nice to still give them the choice. Of course make sure they can get back inside or have some shelter they can reach available to them if the weather turns colder. If they choose to stay inside more, maybe try some games with them so they still get some exercise and can satisfy that hunt instinct. If they (or you) choose to keep them inside, be sure to provide an extra litter tray.

Guinea pigs & rabbits – By now you

have probably brought these small furries inside or into an insulated outbuilding to shield them from this freezing weather. Indoor cages are often smaller and lack the grass runs of outside hutches. Make sure you offer plenty of hay and try to get them out for socialisation and play regularly. ANTIFREEZE WARNING – We can’t talk about winter without warning you about antifreeze toxicity. Please keep bottles out of reach of our pets and clean up any spillages immediately.

JANUARY OFFER 13-18 January in all Cromwell Vets surgeries. Buy 3 or more of our selected flea and tick product to get a light up collar or lead attachment free! T&Cs apply – see our website for details.

Men Against Mountains Men Against Mountains is a men's mental health support and social group based in Peterborough Our aim is to help support and educate men in improving thier mental health and mental wellness alongside support they maybe already receiving or waiting for. We believe that voicing your pain takes the power away from it. Engaging with like-minded males in a safe non-judgemental environment will show you that you are not alone. We offer a place to talk freely without fear of rejection ... The idea came about after speaking to so many men everyday via our Facebook and Instagram pages who have been suffering in

silence for so long and dealing with the most awful things and who feel like they are unable to voice these troubles to family and friends for fear of embarrassment or feeling a burden. I am on my own mental health journey and know so many others who are fighting their own battles every day. Suffering with a mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and neither is talking about it. Even though support and education via social media is more widely available, the stigma surrounding men's mental health is still widespread and the suicide in males is still spiralling.

 84 men take thier lives each week .  75% of suicides are males.  Men are less likely to seek help and talk. So, MAM aims to get active on behalf of men's mental health and to improve mental wellness . We want you to give your MH a fighting chance alongside the therapy and medication available to you. Unless you take action, and seek help, your mental health is not likely to improve ... Our get-togethers throughout 2020 are designed to cover all aspects of improving and aiding your mental health and wellness, and these include:  Fortnightly social talking groups in a non clinical environment  Motivational talks from Mental Health survivors.  Learning to gain some focus back with Education in Health and Fitness ,Diet ,Self Care and Confidence building.  Getting fit for Mental Wellness activities, including Pad sessions, learning new skills, walks, wildcamping and hiking.  Meeting new friends and have some fun.

If you feel you could benefit from our support group or know of somebody please find all details on our Facebook page or Instagram: Facebook-square Men Against Mountains or on  @menagainstmountains Together we will BATTLE BUILD AND CONQUER. cheek to chic

cheektochic Making the most of the January Sales

By Sarah Davey

We all love a bargain, and sales save us so much money, right? Yes...but you need to shop smart to take proper advantage of the discounts, and to avoid buying things you don’t need. So here is our one-stop shopping guide to the January Sales. Do your research - Many retailers market their sales beforehand and some even let you fill your shopping cart before sales officially open. This means you can think and plan, and make sure that your purchases are relevant to your needs. Goodbye post-sales regrets! Shop your wardrobe first - Take stock of what you already own. This is important when you’re sales shopping. It’s easy to get caught up in the frenzy of snapping up a great deal only to find that you already own three almost identical items to the bargain you just bought. If you go sales shopping armed with the knowledge that you DON’T need brown boots, or another leather jacket, you are more likely to make wise buying choices. Also, if you already know what you do own you can think about what each item you purchase will co-ordinate with, and just like that, you’re adding cool-headed calm to the sales-shopping mix! Don’t forget postage costs - If you’re shopping online, extra costs like postage, customs and shipping aren’t usually included in discounts. Factor this in and keep checking your cart before you hit the ‘Pay’ button. Force yourself to try things on - If it’s worth queueing for the changing room, and you still love it when it’s on, it’s probably a good find! If you can’t be bothered to queue then put it back, you don’t love it that much. Set a budget - If you don’t start with a limit you’re almost guaranteed to blow your budget. Because...new clothes! Also treat your budget as a limit not a target! Beware of returns policies - Most retailers won’t let you return sale items just because you don’t like them once you get them home but... Know your rights - If a sale item is faulty then your rights as a consumer are exactly the same as if the item was full price. Plan your route - Planning will keep you focused and avoid you being lured into shops you’re better off avoiding. Take a friend - Make sure they are the rational, honest type of friend who will tell you if something doesn’t suit you or doesn’t fit you. to keep you from blowing your budget on things you shouldn’t. Wear clothes that are easy to get in and out of - you don’t want to have to spend half an hour in the changing room taking off boots with fiddly catches and tops with twenty buttons multiple times. ‘Nuff said! Eat something first - Food is cheaper and healthier at home. Plus, it’s scientific fact that clothes shopping on an empty stomach causes us to make impulse buys to satisfy hunger cravings! The human brain is quirky like that. Happy shopping.

A New Year and new warning about self-assessment scams With the New Year comes a clean slate, business goals, resolutions and of course – filling in those self-assessment forms. The January 31 deadline is approaching fast, and in the run up, HM Revenue and Customs is warning millions of self-assessment customers to be aware of fraudsters. Worryingly, over the last year, HMRC received nearly 900,000 reports from the public about suspicious HMRC contact either through phone calls, texts or emails. More than 100,000 of these were phone scams, while over 620,000 reports from the public were about bogus tax rebates. Fraudsters use a range of techniques to scam cash from hard working individuals, with some of the most common including phoning taxpayers offering a fake tax refund, or pretending to be HMRC by texting or emailing a link which will take customers to a false page, where their bank details and money will be stolen. Fraudsters are also known to threaten victims with arrest or imprisonment if a bogus tax bill is not paid immediately. However, help is at hand. HMRC operates a dedicated Customer Protection team to identify and close down scams but is advising customers to recognise the signs to avoid becoming victims themselves. It is worth remembering that genuine organisations like HMRC and banks will never contact customers asking for their PIN, password or bank details. Customers should NEVER give out private information, reply to text messages, download attachments or click on links in texts or emails which they are not expecting.

Customers are urged to take action by forwarding details of suspicious calls or emails claiming to be from HMRC to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk and texts to 60599. Customers who have suffered financial loss should contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or use their online fraud reporting tool.

Tax is automatically deducted from most UK taxpayers’ wages, pensions or savings. Where tax is not automatically deducted, or when people or businesses have earned additional untaxed income, they are required to complete a Self-Assessment tax return each year.

People need to complete a tax return if they: T Earned more than £2,500 from renting out property T Their partner received Child Benefit and either of them had an annual income of more than £50,000 T Received more than £2,500 in other untaxed income, for example from tips or commission T Are self-employed sole traders T Are employees claiming expenses in excess of £2,500 T Have an annual income over £100,000 T Earned income from abroad that they need to pay tax on

Money Matters by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

Self Assessment Tax Returns for 2019 With the deadline for completing and submitting selfassessment tax returns online for 2019 (2018/19 tax year) is 31 January 2020 and many of you may be struggling to get the job done. We have put together a list of helpful tips and advice to help make the task more bearable. Do I need to complete a tax return? Self-assessment is not just for selfemployed people. If you fall under one of the following categories, you will need to complete a tax return too: Circle You are self-employed Circle You are a company director in receipt of dividends in excess of £2,000 Circle Your annual income is £100,000 or more Circle You have income from letting any property or land you own Circle You receive other untaxed income, or significant capital gains, and the tax due on it cannot be collected through a PAYE tax code Circle You need to claim expenses or reliefs Circle You or your partner receive Child Benefit and your income is over £50,000

There are also other reasons, such as being a minister of religion, in receipt of trust or settlement income, have taxable foreign income or you are a trustee Circle Please note this list is not exhaustive. Circle

When should I start the application process? Now! You can only submit your tax return online if you have already registered and have a unique tax reference (UTR). If you haven’t done this yet, you should do it now. It can take up to seven working days for HMRC to send you an activation code by post. The deadline to submit your tax return is the 31 January, so you need to start the application as soon as possible. Or we can complete your tax return for you!
