Welcome to the July issue of the Yaxley Gazette. Hope everyone enjoyed the glorious sunshine, it was certainly needed! As I write this note it has turned milder and the rain has come, great for the garden not so much for BBQs or picnics. With the changing climate we are having spare a thought for all the farmers out there, the Village Farm on page 27 makes an interesting point, and please don't moan about the hold ups from combines or tractors this year, these guys are doing a fantastic job. So, remember to buy British and local. Please remember to support your local shops and tradespeople. If you do use the services of anyone in the magazine, please tell them you found them in the Gazette. We all need to continue to support one another. Whatever awaits you in July – and the rest of the year – be kind to yourself, do the things that make you happy, and believe that things will get better. Stay safe and well.

Bowling into a Welcome Summer

Alison McGuinness, President

Returning to Normality Our first meeting is now only weeks away and we are excited about finally meeting up. Our meeting will be held outdoors, as per Covid rules, and with weather permitting, although a Plan B is already in place as well. Our first meeting will be a purely social event just to catch up and get used to meeting outdoors. We are looking forward to seeing our members after all this time and to catch up with their news. Our Zoom Coffee Mornings have stopped for now but our Knit and Natter group has resumed, albeit in a socially distanced manner. As our meetings start to return to some sort of normality, we are always more than happy to accept visitors, so anyone wishing to come along and see what we get up to, please email us. WIholmevillage@gmail.com

YAXLEY WI Pauline Brown

Watch this Space I hope that you have been enjoying the glorious sunshine which has certainly been good for the gardens although my lawn seems to be growing twice as fast as normal! Sorry, but still no news on the commencement of our meetings but keep watching this space and it surely won't be too much longer. Keep well everyone.

Independent

The committee would like to thank all members who have worked on the green while we have been on shutdown, ensuring we are ready for the relaxation of restrictions. The 2021 season is upon us, and although we are still restricted to Covid rules, we are open for new members to give bowls a try.

Site reopening news

We have teams in the Peterborough league and are affiliated to the EBF and EBA associations. As president of the club, I would like to say that we are actively looking to increase our members so that we can continue to give the community a thriving club which can be enjoyed by members in the Yaxley area for many years to come.

Good news! Both Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery and Flag Fen Archaeology Park have now reopened in line with Government guidelines.

So, if bowling is of interest to you, please contact our secretary, or bookings officer, (numbers below) to register your interest in having a trial on Saturday mornings. The club can supply bowls for your trial game but we ask when playing on the green you wear flat shoes,

There are also some exciting changes with our new-look ‘Georgian Kitchen’ café – we will offer a selection of cream teas and cakes, as well as hot and cold drinks in our first phase of opening. From 21st June phase 2 of the café will introduce our larger menu offer.

We are delighted to be able to welcome visitors back. The Museum is open Tues-Sat 10am-4pm and Sun 12pm-4pm. It is also open Mondays during the school holidays.

We look forward to welcoming you to Broadway Bowls Yaxley.

Flag Fen has now fully reopened, after partially reopening in April. It is open MonSun 10am-4pm (last entry 3pm).

inspire CHRISTIAN AID WEEK

Yaxley makes a Significant Impact I am pleased to report that £1134 was raised in Yaxley in response to the Christian Aid Week appeal last month. This will make a significant impact on the lives of some of the world’s most disadvantaged people, all of whom face circumstances invariably made even more challenging because of the threat of Covid infection in areas where protection is still minimal. Thank you to all who contributed and those who distributed envelopes. John Harper (Rev.) If you would like to find out more about Christian Aid’s work do visit www.christianaid.org.uk

ST PETER'S CHURCH

St Peter’s Explorers As I write this, we are coming to the end of May Half Term and this holiday’s Explorers. We haven’t seen as many of you this holiday, but we are delighted that this is because you are able to go out and explore different parts of our country again, now that lockdown measures have eased. Laura Ashley Children’s & Families Authorised Lay Minister & Explorers Coordinator, St. Peter’s Church For those who may not be aware, Explorers provide packs of activities for families during the school holidays, all based around a theme. These are activities that can be done at home and around our community, such as our popular trails. The packs are free and can be collected from the church porch during the holidays. When we started Explorers last summer, it was our hope and prayer that it would help families within our community, and that it would grow. This prayer has been answered. We’ve seen so many of you collecting packs over the past 10 months and heard from you by email and social media about how much you’ve enjoyed taking part. One family told us “it’s not a school holiday without an Explorer pack!” In my own family, Explorers is a bit different for my children than for others. The chances are my girls

have already tested out the trails and some of the activities by the time we reach the school holiday, but they are still filled with excitement when I ask them ‘shall we go pick up an Explorer pack?’They love collecting something that has been made for them and despite hearing me talk about it for weeks in advance, they are still thrilled to see what has made it inside the pack. The contents and theme always spark new conversation. This half term, as we explored wellbeing, my 8-year-old confessed that she’s heard this word a lot lately (probably from me!) but didn’t know what it actually meant for her. We were able to discuss this and think about it throughout the week. The packs have helped our family find new things to do to fill those school holiday days. We’ve walked new paths in our community, brought joy to others through making flowers for Olivemede

Care Home, filled our windows with hope, hunted for scarecrows around the churchyard, visited the greengrocers to find the wonkiest vegetable and so much more. We’re currently working on something ‘extra’ for Explorers, in the form of monthly outdoor family activities. These will be a space where we can together further explore nature, faith and our surroundings, creating an opportunity to meet each other and, restrictions permitting, share food and drink! More details coming soon! Thank you to everyone who has supported Explorers, from all the families taking part to all the businesses and Yaxley Parish Council for their ongoing support. See you in the summer!

Meaning to Inspire The section header for Yaxley Gazette churches’ articles each month is ‘inspire.’The verb ‘to inspire’ means someone or something that gives you ideas for doing something. A sudden good idea. Our Sarah was inspired to start the Busy Bees group for babies under one year and their parents in our Chapel every Friday. I wrote about this last month and the group has proved so popular that there is a waiting list of people wanting to join in the fun. If you are interested you can find out more on by following the link on our Facebook page.

perfumes from the flowers are amazing. Being able to breath in the fresh air as we go for our regular walk, seeing the wildlife and birds with their young, it is no wonder that people are inspired to write poetry and to paint.

The noun ‘inspire’ means the act of breathing in. With the summer sun shining, and the gentle showers, our gardens and surrounding countryside are looking so colourful and the

We Wear Underpants by Katie Abey There are many different styles of books for young children, and I know that when mine were both toddlers, one sort of book that was guaranteed to occupy them every time was a spotting book. We Wear Underpants is this type of book, and the illustrations are wonderful. Each page is full of animals wearing … well, the sorts of things that you would NOT expect an animal to wear! From the titular item of underpants to t-shirts, scarves, wellies, and pyjamas. Each page asks the reader to look for a different thing. Counting candy floss on a page with animals wearing t-shirts at the fair. Finding the stripy scarf and deciding which scarf you would want to wear. And who is dreaming while wearing pyjamas. The final page asks, ‘What will you wear today?’ A lovely way to get young children thinking about getting dressed – a task that often seems to be low on the list of priorities for a child that age!

Lost and Found

by Oliver Jeffers

‘Once there was a boy and one day he found a penguin at his door’. This is the opening line of this wonderful picture book. A very simple story but one that can’t help but draw you in emotionally. Finding a penguin at your door is not a normal everyday occurrence, and what happens next isn’t normal and everyday either. The boy realises that the penguin is lost and is determined to help him find his home. After checking and the ‘lost and found’ and realising that no one has reported a missing penguin, he sets out to return him to the South Pole in a small rowing boat. But is the penguin really lost and will returning him to the South Pole really be what the penguin wants? This is a wonderful story of an unusual friendship and finding what is missing in life.

moneymatters by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

Taxation Here are a couple of questions we have been asked recently. Question: I’ve been going over some old tax returns to try to track down some capital losses. However, whilst doing this, I’ve noticed that I missed some figures, including my considerable pension contributions, off the 2018/19 return. From what I can see online, I’ve just missed the deadline to amend it. Is there any way to claim the extra relief? It’s worth around £2,000 which would be very helpful at the moment? Answer: You should make a claim under the provisions for Overpayment Relief. This permits a claim to be made up to four years after the end of the tax year in question where there are no other means to recover the overpaid tax. You need to be very careful when drafting the claim, as it must contain specified information. It must also be signed by you personally, an accountant can’t sign it on your behalf (though they could help you draft the letter).

Google rated Agent “Excellent service! Incredibly helpful and responsive. Would definitely recommend” m.m feb–2021

Question: Following the Covid-19 pandemic, I’ve decided to change my year end to 31 March (from 31 December) in order to utilise overlap relief that I’ve been carrying forward. However, I’m not sure exactly what profits to include on my return? Answer: This will depend on exactly how you enact the change. If you prepare accounts for the 15 months to 31 March 2021, your return for 2020/21 will include the results for the full 15 months, less the overlap relief. If you prepare accounts for the three months to 31 March 2021, you will have two accounting periods (one 12 months and one three months) in the basis period for 2020/21 and you will include the results from both, again deducting the overlap relief. Of course, it’s possible that you are referring to your current year, i.e. you will prepare accounts to 31 March 2022. In that case, the change won’t take place until the 2021/22 year and you should just report your results to 31 December 2020 on the 2020/21 return in the usual way.

Holme C of E Primary School As we start back after half-term we are looking forward with optimism to the final part of the academic year. Our afterschool clubs will see our children enjoying: Multiskills run by Peterborough United , Art Club, Yoga, Cricket and Football. Year 5 and 6 are off to Grafham Water for an exciting day visit soon, so this will give the children and staff the opportunity to be adventurous and challenge themselves. It should also be a lot of fun! Thank you to the Holme Reading Rooms and our Friends of Holme

School for their generous donations to our school. We have ordered some fantastic new resources for the field, to encourage musical creativity and social development. Miss Williams and Miss Weeks (our Key Stage 2 teachers) have given out parts for the end of year production and the children have begun to learn their lines. Things are slowly beginning to get back to normal. We are keen for our children to have as many of the summer term experiences as possible.

Little Acorns Day Nursery & Montessori School At little Acorns day nursery during the last month the children have been celebrating Eid. The children have been learning about giving thanks and who we give thanks to; from people who help us to our family and friends. The children have been learning and exploring with symbols and shapes and the meaning of them, such as the moon. At Little Acorns the children have made pictures using these shapes and symbols and

have decorated those using different resources as well as exploring shapes in Montessori, play dough shapes and shapes around the room. The Preschool children have also been practising for their end of year concert and have been singing and acting out their chosen songs for the event. They have enjoyed learning news songs and revisiting old songs and will soon introduce props to support their roles on the big day.

We have limited spaces available for September 2021; for any enquiries please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

At the end of half term, William De Yaxley Academy created a buzz about science by holding a fun packed day of investigations and allowing the pupils to be ‘Scientists for the Day’. During the Science Day, the children took part in a variety of activities which focused on the ‘Working Scientifically’ strand of the curriculum. This involved the pupils making predictions and observations, recording results, asking questions and drawing conclusions. The idea of the day was to inspire a sense of wonder and excitement for the pupils so that they could develop their own scientific knowledge and understanding in a fun way around

various topics such as electricity, bubbles, forces and air resistance. As well as this, the pupils found out about famous scientists and the impact Science has had on their daily lives as well. Quotes from the children ‘ It was like being an actual scientist, trying out experiments.’ ‘I liked the investigations because we got to blow some enormous bubbles.’ ‘A real fun day and now I know what a conductor does.’ ‘ I thought Science day was fun and interesting because I got to discover how a circuit works.’

School’s IN for Summer Ofsted inspections highlighted that Covid-19 has had a detrimental impact on students’ social skills, attendance and achievement. Research also illustrates that children who have fallen behind could benefit from the clear academic focus that would come from attending summer school. Summer school is a way to offer your child additional help, to give them more time to learn the basics of a subject. This extra time can help to build your child’s confidence and prevent them becoming lost in a subjet that they find difficult to keep up with, in a more relaxed environment and smaller classes.

Summer School at Kip McGrath  Is your child struggling with basic maths, reading and phonics or their writing skills?  Is your child facing 11+/King’s School entrance exams in the autumn term this year and you’re not sure where to start?  Is your child in Year 9 or 10 and you are concerned about their rapidly approaching GCSE exams in Maths and English?  Is your child moving schools in September and worried about moving to ‘big school’?  Would you like your child to learn in a supportive, stress-free

environment where hard work and effort are rewarded?  Would you like your child to receive expert tuition over the summer holidays with qualified and experienced teachers?  Would you like your child to grow in confidence, knowing that they have had the opportunity to fill in the gaps in their learning?  With a choice of two Centres offering different days and times throughout August you should be able to find sessions to suit your family. Each session is stand-alone, but must be pre-booked by the end of July.

Summer Ready

LAWN

Not only do we have over 30 years’ experience in caring for millions of lawns, but we also continue to pioneer innovative solutions in Lawn Care, boldly leading the way in our industry as the most recommended Lawn Treatment Service in every part of the UK.

As summer approaches, it’s essential that you keep your lawn healthy and strong in preparation for the rising temperatures, increased humidity, and reduced rainfall; this is where our NutraGreen ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment can help. Our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is applied between April and June and features a fully coated fertiliser designed to give your lawn a timed release on nutrition over several months, feeding your grass and stimulating growth. This sophisticated treatments also includes a weed control to help eradicate those which are unwelcome on your lawn, keeping your lawn looking its best ready for summer. An added benefit of our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is that you’ll also receive an application of our fantastic water conserver, Oasis. Now is the perfect time for an Oasis Treatment as it helps

GREEN THUMB PROMOTION

With warmer, longer days on the horizon, the beautiful bright colours of your garden are best enjoyed alongside a lush, green lawn. As the centrepiece of your garden, GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service will ensure your lawn reaches its full potential as a weed-free, healthy, and well-loved lawn.

your soil to make the best use of any available moisture, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less. Our popular Oasis Treatment now features an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which has proven to have an almost immediate visual effect on the colour of your lawn. This unique solution also improves the quality of your grass, benefits root development and helps with stress tolerance; what’s not to love!

So, act now to allow your lawn to be the best it can be. By booking in Aeration and Scarification for Autumn, you’re giving your lawn the best defence against moss in the colder months. Naturally, one of the most important measures to keep your lawn as healthy as possible during this time of year, is ensuring the lawn receives enough moisture. It’s most beneficial to give a lawn a drink early in the morning or late in the evening.

Summer is a great season to spend more time enjoying your outdoor space, although sometimes we can experience extended periods of drought-like conditions. While dry weather can’t be prevented, measures can be taken to prevent the damage it can inflict upon your lawn. If there is extensive dry weather this Summer, it can cause a lawn to stop growing, turn brown and appear patchy and worn. Fear not, GreenThumb’s expertise and experience, coupled with good lawn maintenance, will help your lawn resist drought, and recover stronger than ever.

At this time of year, we also recommend implementing a regular mowing regime to help your lawn be the best it can be. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for mowing, however it’s important that your mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. It is also important, especially during the summer months, that your grass isn’t cut too short as this will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, we advise raising the height of your cut from 1” up to 2” and give it a good drink the day after mowing.

Dry weather can quickly turn your grass yellow, while rain – on what looks like a lovely green lawn – can spur the growth of moss and weeds.

Let’s create the lawn we both love. Contact your local GreenThumb branch today, please see our advert below.

julygarden What if I was to tell you that even a beginner can successfully grow a wide variety of fruit from apples and pears to plums, cherries, blueberries and raspberries, and possibly even figs or nectarines? The first thing you need to know is that the sweeter the fruit is meant to be the more sun it will require. Sun boosts sugar levels. If you have a sunny wall it’s an ideal place to train a sunloving fruit tree like a peach or an apricot. Plant the tree at the base of the wall but not too close (about 30cm is about right) in soil enriched with fertiliser and good quality compost. As it grows

splay the branches evenly and attach them to the wall. As the plant grows gradually cut out old straggly branches and tie in new healthy branches. The idea of splaying or ‘fanning’ is that as much sun as possible gets to the fruit, so it can ripen beautifully and maximise your crop. It also has the benefit of being a great space saver. Choose a variety that won’t grow too large. In slightly shadier spots you can grow gooseberries or raspberries, or my favourite morello cherries. Most of these come in compact varieties and can also be fan-trained against a wall if space is an issue.

FEELING FRUITY

Have you ever wished you could grow fresh fruit in your garden but worry the space is too small, or it won’t look pretty, or it’s too difficult? By Rachael Leverton I have a tiny orchard of minarettes - spacesaving apple, pear and plum trees bought as single vertical stems which I grow in pots. They grow to a maximum of 6 feet / 2m high and no wider than 45cm. My children love them! Simply cut back the side stems to about 10cm at this time of year and you’re good to go. Just remember that pot-grown plants rely totally on you for their food and water. Thick glazed / non-porous pots are best because they retain water and act as insulation in extreme cold.

Think about when you will sit in you garden. Will you want to eat breakfast out there? If so pop a seat and little table in a spot which catches the morning sun. If like many of us the only chance you get to sit out is during the evening then look for an area which is bathed in golden light of late afternoon. Would you like to dine out doors in the evening? Can you make room for a table, and

Use the correct compost and food for the plant but most will do well with a regular high potash liquid feed from early spring to late summer. As a gardener I was quite late to fruit-growing, but I realised quickly that it becomes an addictive hobby. And as a complete bonus I’ve noticed a definite increase in my bee population over the past few years. Free food, and good for the environment too. What could be better?

would a patio heater be a good investment, so you can make the most of the setting.

or climber. Use galvanised screws and it should last 20 years, providing a delightful place to rest.

If the only area you can place a bench is in baking sun then it’s good to place some sort of overhead structure. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Sawn tanalised timbers can be used to make a very simple frame over which you can train a vine

Choose all-weather furniture for ease of use unless you have oodles of storage space for the winter months. Plastic is cheap but can look very tacky. There are some wonderful synthetic wicker style pieces available now though, and excellent metal

TAKE A SEAT

There is an art to choosing and placing garden seating. First decide whether you want to sit in full sun, or dappled shade. Watch the path of the sun and make a note of which particular parts of the garden are illuminated at each time of day. By Rachael Leverton furniture which requires no care at all. My favourite material is wood though mostly this does require ongoing maintenance. I did discover some rather attractive polystyrene slatted furniture on an aluminium frame which looked remarkably like the real deal. If finances allow you can buy beautiful teak wood furniture which requires very little in the way of after care.

16

Try before you buy! Yes you want your furniture to look wonderful but the most important factor is comfort. Are the seats wide enough? Is there enough back support? Does it come with pads? Finally, to bring a touch of indoor comfort and style to an outdoor area I discovered outdoor rugs! Yes really. Made from long-lasting material, outdoor rugs can cope with rain or shine. They are made

from robust, resistant, easy-care synthetic fibres, which absorb minimal moisture and which dry quickly afterwards. They don’t fade even when exposed to bright sunlight and are cleaned easily by vacuuming, with a broom, or by beating them. I was a sceptic, but I think I’m a convert and bought a little one to place in front of my bench. My dog loves it!

Vegetable Growing As lovely as this time of year is, there is no doubt that your vegetable growing will be close to peaking and perhaps in some areas be on the decline. Rather than leaving the fun of growing your own until next year, it’s time to add to what you already have and start some crops from fresh. Even if you’ve missed the boat totally and never actually planted anything this year, there’s still time to grow some tasty home-grown vegetable and herbs. Ruby chard These brightly coloured plants create an attractive display as well as tasty food. ‘Bright Lights’ is the wackiest, with bright yellow, orange, red, pink and purple stems. It can be sown successfully into August and can be used as ‘baby leaves’ for salads or as an alternative to spinach.

Mizuna Several of the oriental vegetables respond especially well to later sowing, Mizuna being a favourite. With its pretty divided leaves and ability to grow very fast, it can be sown from now and into September. A covering of fleece helps to keep the flea beetle away.

Spring onions These grow rapidly and although it is getting late, a prompt sowing now should still give you a crop of tiny spring onions in October. Sow enough to leave some in the soil, so you can then harvest full-sized versions in March.

Carrots Some varieties of ‘maincrop’ carrot including ‘Ideal’ can still be sown until early August. Sow within the week and you’ll be cropping from autumn to Christmas time. Choose a light soil, free from stones, or grow in a deep container.

Baby spinach These are perfect in salads and sandwiches and are tastier and more tender (and a lot cheaper) than those you buy in cellophane bags. Make successional sowings from now and into September and in five to six weeks you can harvest the baby leaves. If you like full-sized spinach leaves for cooking, then just leave the crop in the ground and allow it to grow a little more.

Chinese cabbage Another late-season stalwart, it is one of the fastest growers and perfect for anyone who wants a delicate steamed vegetable or a wonderfully tasty and crunchy addition to a Chinese-style meal. Also known as Chinese leaves, if you sow promptly you should be harvesting in late October.

French beans Grown at home, these are so much better than the supermarket’s offerings. A speedy sowing now should produce plenty of beans that you can harvest in mid-autumn. Choose a variety such as ‘Tendergreen’ and it should perform well. There are numerous different colours and shapes of salad leaf available and they can be sown now, either singly or in combination. Simply use scissors to snip off what you need and, provided you don’t cut too low, they’ll act as a cut-and-come-again crop. Look out for mixed seed packs including all sorts of tasty varieties such as rocket, baby beet, lettuce and basil. There...almost too much to eat!

LoftyIdeas Dark, pokey and inaccessible, lofts can often be, literally, a waste of space, useful for a bit of dusty, long-term storage and nothing else. Turn that space into one or two useful rooms and – ta da! – not only might you have added real value to your property, but you have extra living space that could make all the difference to happy family life.

Converting your loft can be the ideal way to gain extra space without the expense and hassle of moving house.

how a loft conversion affects the house as a whole, as they can make them top heavy, with too many bedrooms and, in comparison, too few reception rooms. Check out other properties nearby that have been similarly extended, to see what has been done and what they’re worth.

The simplest loft conversion might just involve strengthening and boarding out the floor, adding a light and sticking in a pull-down loft ladder – giving you a good-sized storage area that’s accessible on a regular basis, at a cost of probably only a couple of thousand pounds. Bear in mind, however, that Building Regulations may apply to even a simple conversion – see more at www.planningportal.gov.uk. Such a basic project may be a good idea in practical, everyday terms, but if it’s added value you’re after you’ll have to be more ambitious, say the experts, and put in at least one ‘real’ room.

A word about space planning. If you have room, adding a bathroom to a loft conversion makes sense both practically and financially, and shouldn’t cost any more than adding a new bathroom anywhere else in the house – in other words, anything from around £3,000 for a plain fit-out. Costs will be minimised if you place the bathroom above one on the floor below, keeping plumbing work simple. However, don’t compromise on the rest of the design just to keep the new bathroom above another. If it really doesn’t work and needs to be moved, the extra cost will be worth it in terms of having proper, usable space.

To maximise your return, the conversion has to be designed properly from the very beginning. You should have a proper lobby area when you come up the stairs, there should be sufficient head clearance, it should be properly insulated and ideally you should have a dormer window rather than a Velux. It’s also important to think about

Finally, if overall head height is an issue in your potential loft conversion, don’t try to get away with cramped, uncomfortable rooms. Lowering the ceilings of the rooms below is often a possibility and may not be as expensive as you would imagine. It can make all the difference to the success of a project.

Picnics

After months of only being able to meet up outdoors, we’re now into the summer and outside is exactly where we want to be! Let’s make the most of it then with good planning and some fun accessories. Research your perfect picnic spot carefully. How far is it from the car park and is there a charge for parking? Are there toilets? Can you bring your dog? Is there somewhere to shelter if it’s too hot or there’s a sudden shower. Pack everything you need for the day: water, sunscreen, a lightweight waterproof (just in case), warmer layers and the all-important face mask and hand-santiser. A plastic bag for your rubbish will be handy too. Decorate your picnic area with battery-powered fairy lights, lanterns and some bunting. Get comfy with camping chairs or deck chairs, using your picnic basket as a handy side table. Music adds atmosphere so take a Bluetooth speaker.

Sage and Pancetta Roast Chicken Give classic roast chicken a tasty makeover with a handful of fresh sage and some delicious smoky flavoured Italian bacon called pancetta. Look out for thin rashers of pancetta in the deli section of your supermarket or buy it freshly sliced from an Italian deli. Serve with roasted baby new potatoes and lightly steamed vegetables for a wonderful summer Sunday lunch. Serves: 4 Ready in: 2 hours 30 minutes

Ingredients 1.3kg oven-ready chicken (preferably free range) 55g butter, softened Approx. 20 fresh sage leaves Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 85g smoked pancetta slices 115g fresh white breadcrumbs 1 medium egg, beaten Fresh sage leaves, to garnish

Method  Preheat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas mark 5. Place the chicken in a foil-lined roasting tin. Smear half of the softened butter over the chicken breast, legs and wings and scatter over half the sage leaves. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover the chicken loosely with foil and roast in the preheated oven for 1 hour 10 minutes. Uncover and baste the chicken with any juices twice during cooking.  Meanwhile, melt the rest of the butter in a frying pan, add the chopped onion and fry gently for 5 minutes. Chop half the pancetta and add to the pan, frying for a further 5 minutes until the onion is softened and golden. Remove from the heat. Finely chop the rest of the sage and add to the pan with the breadcrumbs and some seasoning.

TIP To make light gravy to serve with the roast chicken, drain off any excess fat from the roasting tin then heat the pan juices until sizzling. Add a splash of dry white wine or sherry then stir in a little plain flour and 1 tsp wholegrain mustard. Cook for 1 minute then gradually pour in 400ml hot chicken or vegetable stock and slowly bring to the boil, stirring all the time. Simmer for 3-4 minutes until just thickened. Season to taste with freshly ground black pepper.

Leave to cool then stir in the beaten egg. Press the stuffing mixture into a greased 18cm round shallow cake tin.  Uncover the chicken and top with the rest of the pancetta slices. Return to the oven and roast, uncovered, for a further 25-35 minutes until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through – the juices should run clear with no sign of pinkness when the thickest part of the thigh is pierced. Cook the stuffing in the oven at the same time until set and pale golden.  Remove the chicken from the oven, cover and leave to rest for 10-15 minutes. Cut the stuffing into wedges and serve on a platter with the roast chicken, garnished with the fresh sage leaves.

healthandbeauty Strong sun, high temperatures, humidity and pool or sea water will damage your hair, leaving it dry and brittle. Try taking a gentler approach to your hairstyling in the summer months. Use a mild shampoo and when you do wash your hair, finish with a cool or cold rinse to seal the cuticles. Try to limit hair treatments such as bleaching, and cut back on the use of heated hair styling tools such as curlers and hair straighteners. If your hair is long enough, put it into a loose bun and tuck the ends out of sight, as this is the most vulnerable part. Pulling your hair back in this way also mean you don’t have a parting, which will prevent sunburn on your scalp – although sunscreen all around the hairline is important.

If you don’t have long hair, have a parting and don’t want to wear a hat, it’s essential that you apply sun lotion to your scalp. Your hair might look a little greasy during the day, but that’s better than the bad dandruff look that a peeling scalp will give you. Before going into a pool or the sea, wet your hair with plain water as this will reduce the absorption of chlorine or salt. After your swim, rinse your hair with plain water again and use a mild shampoo at the end of each day, to ensure those chemicals and salt aren’t continuing to do their worst.

Safety in the home

FURTHER HELP Age UK – Advice Line 0800 169 6565, ageuk.org.uk

Improved living standards, better healthcare, greater awareness of the importance of a healthy diet and taking regular exercise have led to more and more people enjoying a healthy life at home into their 80s and 90s. However, older people are one of the groups of our population most vulnerable to accidents, particularly in and around the home. Over-65s account for nearly 20% of the total number of A&E home accident attendances, and 30% of the attendances were due to accidental falls at home.

 Reducing risks Every area of your home should be free of clutter to minimise the risk. Make sure you have good lighting in each room so that you can see where you are going, and when you are indoors, wear flat, wellfitting shoes rather than loose-fitting slippers.

 Kitchen Bad burns to those over 65 can be very serious, as the body finds it harder to fight infection. Scalds from boiling kettle water are very common, and cookers and radiators are other danger points.  Use a cordless kettle and only boil enough water for your immediate needs.  Ensure you have space to put down hot pans and plates immediately next to the oven and hob.

 Use the back burners of the cooker to reduce the chance of accidentally knocking a pan.

 Living room

Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents rospa.com

 Install a smoke alarm (or do a regular check if you already have one). They are relatively cheap and could save your life.

 Make sure carpets are well-fitted and there are no loose edge or bumps.

 Bathroom

 If you have a rug don’t put it where you will be stepping over its edges, as that’s a trip hazard.

 Always check the water temperature before stepping into a bath.

 Keep the remotes and your phone close to where you sit.

 In a shower you could use a small seat but only if you have a decent amount of space – otherwise this itself is a trip hazard.

 Naked flames from real fires and candles are a significant hazard. Opt for artificial versions for the ambience – many can even be switched on and off by remote control.

 Hallway/stairs  Again, make sure carpets are well-fitted, particularly on the stairs.

 Use a non-slip rubber mat if you find your shower tray slippery.  Have a handrail fitted on the wall for both baths and showers.

 Bedroom

 Try not to leave things cluttering the stairs.

 If you use an electric blanket always switch it off before getting into bed and regularly check the power cable for fraying or scorch marks.

 A letter basket on the inside of your letterbox saves bending down.

 Remember to have your phone, remote control, drink and medicine beside the bed before you get in.

villagefarm Farmer Tom & Lisa

“July is a blind date with summer” Hal Borland

The monthly weather raffle continues. In April this year we were ‘rewarded’ with January weather (22 ground frosts) and with none of those April showers. They came in May with the rest of the April weather, and then in June we skipped a couple of months and saw weather which wouldn’t be out of place in high summer with successive days topping 25 degrees (77 F in old money). So what does perfect July weather look like for us here on the farm? Well, our crops should be ripening nicely so some sunshine and warmth is useful, and the occasional shower helps that. For grass growth, too long, sunny days with the odd shower is ideal. We’ll also most likely be cutting some hay in July which needs a few successive days of dry weather as the grass – when cut – needs to dry completely before it can be baled up and stored, and any rain during that time reduces the quality and nutrition of the bales. With the crops having raced to catch up after the April cold, we’ll be harvesting our rapeseed and autumn-sown barley in July too, so when the

combines are rolling, we like dry, sunny weather, though not too hot, as a machine or field fire is just about our worst nightmare. There’ll be more harvest traffic on the road in July and August so apologies for any delays. We try to minimise disruption as much as possible, but the tractor ahead of you is probably racing to get the crops harvested before any storm comes and (like last year) thousands of pounds are potentially lost. We may also need a little more room to pass, so if everyone could park with extra care for a few weeks, that would be so helpful! July is also the month that many go on holiday, and if that’s you, we wish you a refreshing and

fun time away. While you’re resting and reflecting, some of you may be making plans, as lockdown has unleashed a whole host of entrepreneurship and creativity, with people getting into baking, fermenting, smoking, preserving, and lots of other things. If you’re thinking of starting a small business, do get in touch as we’d love to partner with you and support each other. There are so many foods in season in July; it’s a larder-filling feast of a month. If you look for the Red Tractor when purchasing you’ll be assured of British-grown or raised, high welfare food and drink. Thank you for buying British and supporting British farmers and producers.

Over the past year, many of us of have spent more and more time in our gardens and outdoor spaces. During lockdown, our gardens have become more important than ever; as we have grown our own vegetables, added decorative lighting and ornaments, invested in furniture and splashed out on hot tubs and outdoor bars. So as our outdoor spaces become an extension of our home, we may have invested a lot of time, effort and money into making them look fabulous; and that could also have meant buying additional tools, a new lawnmower or a range of other gardening gadgets.

 Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home.  CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcomed activity from your home.  Install some sensory / outdoor lighting.  Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors.

But when considering our outdoor space and belongings, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security as we do our own home?

 If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels.

Did you know that 9 out of 10 household thefts occur in the garden - with our best outdoor furniture, garden ornaments, power tools and ornaments, barbeque and ladders among the top items?

 Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment. Even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves.

So, when it comes to what you already have, think about the value and security of our outdoor possessions in the same way you view those inside the home.

 Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball.

Here are some simple precautions:  Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief - an unlocked back gate or shed (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools / machinery or bikes).  Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds.

 Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode.  Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs.  Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group (https://www. ourwatch.org.uk/) – where you and your neighbours can look out for each other.

When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and / or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy. If you need a recommendation for a safe, approved local tradesperson, contact www.safelocaltrades.com
