Welcome to the July issue of the Yaxley Gazette. It's been another great month for the local area, the Tour of Cambridgeshire was a huge success and thanks to Ashley Briggs for the front cover. Well done, also, to several spectators who helped out with a few exhausted cyclists. Our local news covers a varied selection this month from a local Holme resident receiving a well deserved medal, to free swimming for under fives; we also have What's On guide on pages 18-19 full of many forthcoming events being held in your local area. As always we have updates from the local schools, doctors, churches, Neighbourhood Watch, Parish Council, library and much more. Remember, we are always interested to hear your stories on personal achievements and events you may be planning, so please keep us to date so we can feature you and any local events in this magazine. Hampton Tiddlers reach the finals!

Medal awarded Mr. Charles Wilson, aged 90, of Holme Village near Peterborough attended the French Ambassador’s Residence in London on Friday 27 May, where Mme Sylvie Bermann, the French Ambassador to the United Kingdom, awarded him the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest award. Like every young man during World War II, Mr. Wilson wanted to get into the action – so at 17 he signed up and after his training served in the King’s Rifle Corps in France, Holland and Germany as well as taking part in the Normandy Campaign. It is for his service in the Normandy Campaign that the French have awarded him this honor. Mr. Wilson, a retired Master Plasterer, was born in London, and after the war, moved to Holme, where he managed

the family plastering and building business for many years. He can also lay claim to French ancestry too, as a direct descendant of Claude DuChesne, a Huguenot immigrant to London in the seventeenth century, now recognized as one of the world’s foremost clockmakers. Mr. Wilson said that sadly the number who might have received the medal have dwindled but finally the day has come and he is proud and pleased to wear this medal.

The ‘International What’s On 4 Junior Awards 2016' are Annual Awards that celebrate and recognise companies, organisations and individuals who provide activities, classes and days out for children and their families across the UK and Australia. Hampton Tiddlers has been recognised and become finalists for the 'Best Baby and Toddler Group' category. Two of their group of volunteers Emma Pilarski and Claire Drewett are finalists for the ‘Outstanding Volunteers' category. Sihan Faustina Yang, one of the founders of the group told us, “It’s a great honour to be in the finals, the competition is strong but we believe our group has made a big difference to a lot of families in the Peterborough area. All of our volunteers are team players and the number of attendees and regulars indicate we must be doing something right.” Hampton Tiddlers would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who supported us by voting. The awards ceremony takes place on 23 June at Chessington World of Adventures. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that the group get the recognition they truly deserve!

COMMUNITY NEWS

WI - About us

It's not easy making friends when you're the new girl in the playground . . .

W

hen I moved into Hampton I knew no one in the area. I had a 16 month old son and although I loved our new house and the area we lived in, there was nowhere to go to meet other people or make friends. When my son started school I met other parents at the school gate but it wasn't until I joined the local WI (when my eldest son was 6), that I really started to feel like I would enjoy living there. Hampton WI was the brainchild of another couple of younger Hampton ladies who, having moved into the area from outside of Peterborough with young children, were at a loss as to where they could go to get to know other women locally. They tried to raise interest in a general women’s group but it was not until they contacted the local WI Federation and asked them to help that other women began to express an interest in a women’s group and that was when the idea of Hampton WI was born. It seemed having the WI behind it made it more inviting. Hampton WI started in April 2008 and I can honestly say I have made a lot of great friends and female acquaintances. In fact my first

ever best friend was a lady from Hampton WI and when my eldest son developed a rare cancer it was my best friend I went to first. It meant the world to me to have her there and if not for the WI I would not have met her. But there are WIs all over the Peterborough area and they are all different but your nearest WI is Yaxley WI itself and Holme WI. The reason for writing this is because the Huntingdon & Peterborough Federation of WIs are wanting to grow existing WIs or help you form new ones. If you like the idea of making friends, learning useful crafts, skills and gaining knowledge plus finding opportunities to help your community, this could be right up your street. The Yaxley area has grown hugely over the last few years and what with the further developments planned, I am sure that there will be many women, regardless of their age, be it a young wife, single Mum, working, retired or even widowed lady who has moved in and needs somewhere to go to find friendly female company. There is so much to do and many funny evenings out to be enjoyed. But a WI is only

as good as its members with each and every WI being responsible for its own meetings, educational activities and speakers. The main criterion for a WI is that, as a group, you learn something at each meeting regardless of what it is. The best bit is that it's totally up to you what that is. You could be enjoying cocktail making nights, learning about Steam Punk, trying Calligraphy, having a go at belly dancing, learning how to make a Victoria sponge, hosting pudding nights and so much more and if you like a glass of wine, you can have that too! However, most importantly, you would be gaining a great group of friends. So if you like the idea of making friends, learning useful crafts, skills and gaining knowledge plus finding opportunities to help your community, this could be right up your street. If you are on Facebook, please join the Facebook group called 'WIs of Peterborough and message us to let us know where you live and if you are interested in attending an existing WI or building a new one! Alternatively please email our Federation Office on office@hpfwi.co.uk.

After a very cold wet May, June started well weather wise. Competitions, club and county, are well underway. Congratulations go to Julie Cooper on winning the first of our club competitions, the Mitcham Cup.

yourlibrary Forthcoming events... Summer Reading Challenge Meanwhile in the county competitions, many of our players are progressing to the latter rounds. Notably Viv Hempsell who is in the semi-final of the Senior Singles; also congratulations to Peter Harvey, Freda Thomas, Graham Agger and Fred Browning, all of whom, at the time of writing, are still in multiple competitions. There was a fantastic turn out to the Hunts Ladies Presidents' Day on 20 May, hosted by our Freda Thomas. Instead of the the usual greys and whites, the green was bathed in pink, at Freda's request, in recognition of her chosen charity. The Queens 90th birthday was celebrated on the green, on 12 June, with a bowls drive followed by a tea-party fit for her majesty herself. The next major event is the club's open triples competition, on Monday 18 July, when teams from all over the county will be competing to win a first prize of £120, with cash prizes also for 2nd and 3rd places. The league is also settling down with mixed success, our over 60s teams in Division 1, the Hurricanes and the Spitfires holding both promotion spots, as are our Weekend Divison 1 team, the Yaxley Sharks. Let's hope that's how it looks at the end of the season and we have three teams promoted to the Premier league.

yoursafety Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue We are starting to see the first glimpses of summer and the hot weather – long may it continue. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service hopes you have all been staying fire safe with your latest outdoor activities, but just in case, here are our firefighters’ top tips: • When out camping or using a tent, never use candles inside or nearby and always discourage smoking nearby. Never cook inside a tent either. • If cooking outdoors, keep barbecues on level ground, never pour accelerant on it and use it well away from fences, sheds and foliage. • If you have a bonfire, build it well away from buildings, tents or other flammable objects and make sure it is properly out when you leave. • When out in the countryside, extinguish cigarettes properly and dispose of them responsibly – never throw a lit cigarette into a field or wooded area. • Don’t forget to stay safe around our county’s waterways and if you see someone in trouble in water, call 999 immediately with clear details of your location. Find us on Twitter, Facebook & Instagram www.cambsfire.gov.uk T: 01480 444500

This year’s theme is based on Roald Dahl and is called ‘The Big Friendly Read’. It’s that time of year when your children can take part in this exciting challenge by reading six books throughout the summer holidays. When six books have been completed, and stickers and activity sheets collected, they will be invited to a special presentation to collect a certificate and medal.

Volunteers required

Closing date Monday 4 July We need volunteers between the ages of 12 - 16 to help with our Summer Reading Challenge. If you think you would enjoy listening to small children tell you about the books they have read, general Summer Reading Scheme tasks and assisting staff with small library tasks please see a member of staff.

Opera Dudes are returning in Mission Improbable Friday 15 July, 7pm, Sawtry Library

Tickets are £5 per person and available from Sawtry or Yaxley Library, please book early to avoid disappointment. A bar will be available on the night.

Are you new to computers? Would you benefit from one-to-one assistance with computer basics? Our Computer Buddy can offer FREE basic help to beginners and our Family History Volunteer can help you get starting with tracing your ancestors. Please ask a member of library staff for more information.

EngAge in the Afternoon

This event will be taking a break during July and August. Look out for our next event in September.

Maintenance on divorce for children and spouses? Separation or divorce is extremely stressful especially when considering ongoing financial arrangements. All financial aspects need to be considered including housing, pensions and income.

I

n some cases, in addition to child support payments, maintenance for a spouse is also appropriate. As a married couple each party has an ongoing obligation to financially support the other, even after separation or upon divorce. Spousal maintenance is generally calculated on a “needs vs. affordability” basis. If one spouse has an income which is much lower than their reasonable monthly outgoings they can be said to have a “need” for additional financial support. Consideration then has to be given to whether or not the other party can reasonably “afford” to pay spousal maintenance, sometimes in addition to child support. Many other factors also need to be considered such as which benefits or tax credits should be claimed now that each party are “single” as opposed to being a “couple”. This is an extremely complex area but one that is essential to consider when ensuring that each party has financial security now and the future. Abby Smith of Woolley & Co Solicitors always approaches such matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting couples to reach a swift, amicable, cost effective agreement which best meets their specific needs.

Grass cutting in our village

Clive Thorne with Councillors past and present celebrating his 40 years service to the Parish. Clive was presented with a framed scroll as the first Honorary Freeman of the Parish of Yaxley. He thanked all for the honour, and said although he would like to continue as Parish Councillor he felt another 40 years could be a struggle. A letter from MP Shailesh Vara proposed a toast to Clive’s enormous contribution.

We are pleased to report the installation of the Infant Play area has commenced in Middletons Recreation Ground. We are looking to completion with either a safety gate at the entrance from Middletons Road or fencing around the play area.

Currently one of the main issues in the village as the weather is excellent for growing. Cambridgeshire County Council, Huntingdonshire District Council and Yaxley Parish Council all own and maintain verges and or areas of land. The Parish Council are mainly responsible for the larger playing area, cemeteries etc. with the District Council maintaining a number of the estates and Cambs Highways owning the carriageway verges. Defibrillators Following successful fundraising by the Fenland Trust for defibrillators in Yaxley, two locations have been agreed, these are outside the new fire station on Main Street and Yaxley Group Practice on Lansdowne Rd. Further fund raising by Gemma Saunders for a third defibrillator and ongoing maintenance costs include a Zumba marathon. Well done to all for the work involved.

St Peter's Church I recently went to Newcastle for the day to visit my daughter Annelies. Unfortunately, winter had returned in late May so we had to cancel our planned walk at the coast. Instead we decided to visit the Laing Art Gallery. We walked into one room and hanging on the far wall was a really eye-catching painting which must have been at least 5m2. As we were trying to “understand” this striking and colourful abstract painting Annelies remarked on how risky it must have been for the artist to produce such a large painting. The costs of the materials alone would have been considerable. Yet the risks that this artist took meant that her work is now displayed in a prestigious gallery for everyone to enjoy. Encouragement to take risks and to use the gifts which God has given us is one of the messages of one of the most well known parables Jesus told. The so-called Parable of the Talents. Jesus encourages us not to bury our talents or gifts, but to use them for ourselves and our communities. Sometimes, I am sure, we

will be surprised by what we can achieve if we are willing to take a risk. None of us are without gifts / talents. May we use them, as the artist did, for the benefit of others and for our community May I extend a welcome to two of our events over the summer where various talents will be used. Firstly, our annual Strawberry Tea from 3pm on Sunday July 17th at 106/108 Broadway. There will be strawberries, cakes, tea, fellowship and much more…all for £5 per adult, accompanied children free. Secondly, we will be running our Junior Heroes Holiday Club from Tuesday August 30th to Friday September 2nd for primary school age children. Please contact me for further details. As always please remember that you are all welcome at any of our services at St Peter’s – details on our website at www.saintpeters.co.uk or give me a call.

Yaxley Methodist Chapel What a wonderful time we have had as a community so far this year! The word Community is translated from Latin and really means An Inspired Fellowship, a group's pleasure in sharing common experiences. And we have certainly been doing that haven't we? The Yaxley Festival - the Village was buzzing. Our Chapel offered free refreshment to those waiting for the procession to arrive. It was great to meet you all. The open air service in the recreation ground was so joyful. The Cambridgeshire Bike Tour - Main Street, usually so quiet, was alive with people chatting, cheering the cyclists, banging saucepans, children (and some adults) receiving high fives from those who were brave enough to take their hand from their handlebars. Music from the RAF Club giving a party atmosphere too. Many of those taking part obviously loved the support and

encouragement being offered. Some asked "what Village is this?" They must have a memory of what a great community we are. The Queen's Official Birthday - we held our Strawberry Tea on the 11th and we were thrilled that over 60 people came to celebrate with us. As well as taking away a lovely illustrated book about the Queen, I hope they took good memories of our Chapel. We thank them for their generous donations helping us raise £180 for Help for Heroes. All of this happened in the village in just four weeks! What are we going to do for the rest of the summer months? Yaxley's Community at its best for three great events. What can we do next as a Community to share this fellowship? Watch this space.

Mark Thomas and Mike Wenn are pictured here in June this year before setting off on their walk from Stamford to London.

Charity walk for Phoebe Research Fund The walk was the last of three gruelling fundraising challenges which the close friends set themselves to raise funds for The Phoebe Research Fund. The charity was founded by Stamford mum Zoe Crowson to raise funding towards a possible cure for her 6 year old daughter Phoebe who suffers from the rare skin disease Epidermolysis Bullosa. When Mark and Mike got to Yaxley they were met by film and TV star Warwick Davis, who was keen to demonstrate his support for the cause. The pair eventually arrived at Great Ormond Street, where Phoebe undergoes treatment, at around 5pm on Sunday. So far, they have raised over ÂŁ4,000 and are planning another push for donations with a documentary about their triple challenge which will be uploaded to YouTube. Local inventor Colin Furze, whose YouTube channel has nearly three million subscribers and over 280 million views, has offered to help publicise the video. Zoe was proud of Mark and Mike and grateful for the attention their efforts had brought to her charity. BLOG

I've been writing this blog for over two years now, and in that time I have covered many subjects. Most of those by Drew Pontikis subjects, if I'm honest, I have been complaining about. There is, however, one subject that I promised myself that I would never write about, one topic that I held myself in high enough regard that I would never need to stoop to, to get some quick writing done. I'm afraid, along with that promise about going to the gym, the one about eating more healthily, and definitely the one about walking instead of driving, this promise is going out of the window. Recently, there has been a startling increase in the amount of dog poo being laid lovingly about the streets of Yaxley. It's like an obstacle course some mornings, trying to manoeuvre a push chair and two grumpy children to school; the size of some of it either there's a dog with a very strict bowel voiding routine or Jon Snow and Ghost have left the Night's Watch and headed for sunnier climates. Obviously it's gross (I mean come on, it's poo), but there comes a time where you have to accept that there is only so much you can do with someone who doesn't appreciate that their pet

has just left a little present for some unsuspecting person to squelch through, and that it really is their responsibility to get rid of it. As with having children, if you're not prepared to do the gross bits then maybe, just maybe, dog ownership isn't for you. I do remember ages ago a note in this very publication that the parish council had got someone to walk round in a hi-viz jacket to act as the local village dog poo warden, something which in itself is hilarious, but all the more so now when I imagine him sitting in a smoky office lit only by desk lamp, staring at a board with black and white pictures of dogs, turds, and a map of Yaxley all connected by pins and bits of string trying to pin down the culprit. Poor bloke - he probably only got the job as he had his own hi-viz jacket. In summary, I think the only solution is that we form a vigilante mob. Dog owners beware - if you don't pick it up, we'll be round with the torches and pitchforks quicker than you can say 'ÂŁ50 fine'.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Defibrillators for Farcet and Yaxley We are a non-profit charitable based organisation that fundraises for life saving 24hr public defibrillator stations for Farcet & Yaxley, we also aim to encourage our local schools to become heart safe by installing a defibrillator in their buildings.

W

e rely on public donations, donations from businesses and grants to help us provide this life saving equipment. In 2011 I was diagnosed with a rare life threatening heart condition called Long QT Syndrome whilst having tests after having surgery for a hole in the heart, I was told my two boys would have a 50% chance of inheriting LQTS but because I didn’t have a known genetic mutation I couldn’t have them tested. In July 2015 first day of the school summer holidays my worst nightmare happened, my youngest Bradley whom was 6 at the time had collapsed, there was no warning he was fit and healthy. Bradley was unconscious for about 40 seconds and was not aware of what had happened, paramedics arrived within 5 minutes & said because of his grey colour & blue around his lips

there was a chance his heart stopped & restarted. Bradley is doing well he now has a reveal device inserted in his chest this is like a heart monitor, Bradley has regular checkups. So far we have provided a defibrillator for Farcet school & have just installed our 1st public defibrillator at the Farcet post office. Fenland Trust with The Three Horseshoes, local companies and Sue Hodson in Yaxley have fundraised enough for 2 defibrillators & 1 cabinet, we are currently working with The Fenland Trust &The Yaxley Parish Council to get these out into Yaxley & will update you as soon as we have more information. We have recently held a Zumbathon & a charity gig night which was both very successful; we are currently planning some more events for Farcet &Yaxley to help with fundraising.

You can find our page on Facebook called Defib’s for Farcet &Yaxley where you can find our Just Giving page where you can donate, if you wish to donate in person please call myself Gemma Saunders on 07534 195326 or email Glsaunders@hotmail.co.uk.

MONEY MATTERS Holme Speedwatch by Pete Bird, Bird & Laws Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Laws info@birdandlaws.co.uk and if of general interest we will publish them here.

Question I wish to purchase a new house as a main residence, but own other properties - will the new 3% property tax (SDLT) be applicable? Answer If you are replacing your previous main residence within three years then you will not be liable to the additional 3% stamp duty land tax (SDLT), even though you own other residential properties.

Pooled Company Cars A business may have a pooled vehicle that can be either a car or a van. If the conditions are satisfied then there will be no benefit in kind tax charge on any of the employees. A vehicle qualifies as a pooled car if all the following conditions are satisfied: a. It is available to, and actually used by more than one employee; b. It is made available, in the case of each of those employees, by reason of their employment; c. It is not ordinarily used by one of them to the exclusion of others; d. Any private use by an employee is merely incidental to their business use of it; and e. It is not normally kept overnight on or near the residence of any of the employees unless it is kept on premises occupied by the provider of the car.

Our band of Speedwatch volunteers did 5 sessions in April 3 in Station Road, 1 in Short Drove and 1 on Yaxley Road. From the 385 vehicles that passed us during our sessions we recorded 59 exceeding the speed limit. Hopefully this percentage will decrease as we continue to "educate" the drivers who pass through our village. We have recently lost some of our volunteers as they have moved away and would welcome anyone who feels they could spare and hour and a half a month who would like to join us. Please call 01487 830781 or e-mail csw.holme@btinternet.com and I will fix up your training and add you to the rota.

Employers need to be able to demonstrate that the conditions for the car or van to be a pool vehicle have been met. It is a good idea to keep mileage records to show when the vehicle was used and by whom and for what journeys.

Call out for volunteers for the PECT Green Festival Do you have an enthusiasm for your local environment? Are you keen to get involved with great local community events? Then the charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) would love to hear from you! The charity’s annual city-centre Green Festival is back and this year the event is heating up, moving to a new summertime date of Saturday 13th August, with fringe events running through to 21st August. Now the Festival is on the look-out for residents who wish to get involved with volunteering at the event – whether it’s helping to man stalls, raising awareness of the charity, doing photography or filming, gathering attendee feedback or helping to distribute posters about the event in the runup to its Festival launch day. “As a charity, PECT really benefits from and is grateful for the support of all of its wonderful volunteers,” explains Green Festival organiser Jennie Orrell. “We’re keen

to encourage as many people as possible to get involved with this year’s event to make it even bigger and better than ever before.” The 2016 Festival has been sponsored by Travelchoice, which will allow sustainable transport to be highlighted in exciting and thought-provoking ways. In addition to this, the charity is thrilled to announce that the Festival has been awarded Arts Council funding for a three-year period. This funding will be used to commission artists to create innovative artworks for the Festival – whether its street theatre, visual art or spoken word – to promote sustainable living and encourage people to take positive actions for their local and global environment.

Yaxley FC Yaxley FC junior sides have been ending the season with a real flourish as the In2itive Park Trophy cabinet fills nicely.

The U12 Ladies were just edged out in a tournament played on the pitch at Northampton Town. Football League club Swindon Town were the victors but a runners up spot was a brilliant achievement for the Cuckooettes. They went one better the following week in Godmanchester beating the home side in the final after a thrilling tournament. The U11 boys had already completed a cup final win,

inspiration to the U13s who had to keep their nerve in winning a penalty shoot out to lift the St Ives tournament trophy. The Under 12 boys represented the club with great distinction in Wisbech recently as well. Off the pitch the club continues to be involved in the FA Grow your club project. We will be launching a unique database which gives you the chance to volunteer and help your local club.

This could be part of a long term plan of yours to get in the game or just to get some experience for your CV. Keep an eye on Yaxleyfc.com for more on that in the coming weeks. Next month we will have a full preview of the upcoming first team season. Our full list of preseason fixtures is also on the website so why not come along and give non league a try?

We have been able to help many new clients understand these changes and we would like to share the thoughts of one of them. Dont just take our word for it! “I needed advice on my pensions. Wayne explained my options and listened to, and answered my questions making sure I understood. I found him very approachable and I am very pleased with the whole experience. Vivacity announces FREE SWIMMING for all children under 5 in Peterborough Vivacity has announced the expansion of their free swimming initiative to include all children under 5 years old across all of its pools in the city.

B

y offering free swimming to youngsters, Vivacity hopes to foster water confidence and a love of swimming from an early age, not to mention encourage parents to swim more often. Jon Marsden, Director of Sport & Healthy Living at Vivacity commented: “We already offer free swimming outside of lessons to children enrolled in our Swim Academy but we are delighted to now widen this to all children under 5. According to the Amateur Swimming Association, 1 in 5 adults in the UK is unable to swim, and we are committed to supporting children learning to swim at an early age so that they can keep swimming into adult life. We want to encourage all children to be safe in-and-around the water and enjoy the many water based activities available. “As a charity, Vivacity is committed to ploughing every penny spent at its sporting facilities, libraries, museums, theatres or at Vivacity events back into the provision and improvement of Cultural and Leisure services. Our free swimming initiative is one such

improvement along with cultural offerings such as the Children’s Reading Development Programme which is set to reach 13,500 children this year.” Already taking advantage of this at the Regional Pool is Wendy Freeman from Yaxley whose son Dylan (3) swims once a week. Wendy was pleasantly surprised to find that her son could swim for free: “Free swimming for Dylan will definitely encourage me to bring him more often. It can get expensive to come regularly so it’s great to be able to save some money doing something that he loves.” To take the children swimming for free, the accompanying adult simply needs to show their Vivacity card at the pool reception desk. Vivacity cards are completely free, and can be obtained at any Vivacity location. They offer discounts on many Vivacity activities including admission to Longthorpe Tower and Flag Fen, as well as discounted rates for sports activities across Vivacity facilities. The free swimming offer is available at all of Vivacity’s pools.

Stay safe this BBQ season Summer’s here – and whatever the weather, us Brits love our barbecues! A great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. If this sounds like your ideal BBQ (and what’s not to love?) then don’t allow anything to spoil it. The sad fact is that barbecues are involved in many hundreds of accidents that occur in the garden each year. Last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK having had an accident involving a barbecue. The most common types of barbecue-related accidents as shown by the HASS/LASS figures were:

by Eileen Le Voi

However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure you BBQ is fun-filled and not a flaming failure. • Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture such as wooden or plastic chairs. • Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage and never light it in an enclosed space. • Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Never let children too close to the barbecue. • Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. • If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. • When choosing a barbeque, stability is essential - ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy. • Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair.

• Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame - 800 • Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200. The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel.

Neighbourhood Watch Firstly, 'thank you' to Yaxley Parish Council for providing Neighbourhood Watch with meeting facilities. On the agenda for this meeting is anti-social behaviour, dog fouling, parking and more. This list is not exhaustive and is likely to grow over the coming weeks. In other news Speedwatch now has a full complement of volunteers and we are scheduled to begin our programme in partnership with other local communities through equipment sharing. Whilst progress is being made in many areas, Anti-social Behaviour continues to be a major concern for residents. Behind the scenes members of the Fenland Trust are collaborating with representatives of Parish and County Council and other interested parties in a working group to look at issues around ASB and youth. Already some very positive ideas have been produced from within the group and work carries on to establish a dialogue young people within the village. The Fenland Trust’s recent graffiti in the park project and the Yaxley Festival were both used to harvest feedback, the latter being pencilled in for 2017 as a showcase for new youth projects and activities in Yaxley. In addition to these great events, the

Fenland Trust’s recent HMQ90 talent show was produced by young people and demonstrates the enormous potential we have in Yaxley. The Festival itself was not only once again a staggering success, but the introduction of new health and safety systems ensured that it was a very safe event. Having evolved rapidly from a rudimentary approach in the 2013 debut event, YaxFest now boasts documentation and security measures in line with the region’s largest events such as Truckfest. Multiple CCTV installations in the licensed area were a first for YaxFest and were indeed proposed by the event organisers. Perhaps one of the most interesting projects that Yaxley Neighbourhood Watch is planning is a homewatch scheme and loan kit, which will offer residents away from home some peace of mind. This is a work-in-progress and we would welcome any input and feedback. In the meantime we are looking for more volunteers for Yaxley Neighbourhood Watch and if you would like to join or find out more information please join us at our next meeting or contact us via our website.

Next meeting: 21 July at 7:30pm Amenity Centre

NATURE

By Kate Duggan

Get back to nature with a weekend survival course!

If you’re looking to unleash your inner Bear Grylls, or just get back to nature, a survival course may be the answer. You could throw yourself in at the deep-end by jetting off to the wilds of Zimbabwe, or the hot sands of the Sahara. Or you could ease yourself in gently, with a weekend survival course right here in the UK. Weekend activities differ depending on the course you choose, but you’ll likely end up learning to build a fire, find food and create a shelter. You could also find yourself mastering other skills, such as making traps and snares, preparing game, or wood carving. The Survival Schools in Devon and Staffordshire offer a choice of several weekend courses. You could craft traditional weapons and tools, including bows and arrows, or find out how to track animals in the wild, for example. If you fancy getting back to nature with the family, you could try the Family Bushcraft & Canoe Overnighter at The World of Bushcraft Centre in Bedford. Suitable for age eight and over, the experience includes learning to paddle a canoe down the gently flowing River Ouse. You’ll set up camp in the woods for the evening (using a canvas bell tent), learn how to light a fire with a bow drill, and make a fixed blade knife, amongst other activities. Ray Mears Bushcraft also offers weekend experiences for families. From building shelters, to

sharing stories round the campfire, it’s a great way to switch off from technology and reconnect with your family. Other two day experiences include a weekend trip learning how to navigate through UK woodlands. Wildwood Bushcraft runs survival weekends in Scotland and Surrey, with activities such as fire lighting, foraging and building shelters. If you love wandering through the woods, but don’t fancy sleeping in them, some centres also offer half day activities, which don’t involve camping out. You could learn to forage for wild food with Woodland Ways for example, learning about different types of edible plants and fungi, and how to gather and cook them. Most survival courses don’t need you to bring any specialist equipment, but some are self-catering and you will need suitable clothing and a few essentials, such as a sleeping bag, reusable water bottle and torch. You should receive a list of any kit that’s required when you book, but if not, do ask. Your team members may not be too happy if you forget your toothbrush…

FarmerTom I

If the first of July be rainy weather, it will rain, more or less, for four weeks together. – English Proverb

n July, the farmer’s preoccupation with BBC Weather presenter Carol Kirkwood becomes an obsession. At every opportunity we tune in to see if her forecast brings delight or despair, rapture or ruin. July folklore is full of weatherrelated sayings, and the feast day of Saint Swithin, on 15th July, is especially ominous.

They clearly didn’t have the benefit of Microsoft spellcheck back then. But you get the idea. The forty days from the 15th July are the culmination, on many farms, of the whole year’s work. Everything we’ve done; every early start and late finish, the autumn rush to till and sow, being frozen by the winter cold and drenched by spring rains, everything boils down to these few, short weeks. With prices as they are at present (a ton of wheat is sold today for a price lower than in 1980) a poor harvest this year will cause many farmers into bankruptcy. It’s a nailbiting time. July itself is harvest time for the oilseed rape and barley crops on the farm, with mint, melon, and mangetout bursting out at the allotment, and mackerel fresh in the fishmongers. My childhood memories of this time of year are of happy days delivering field teas to the men harvesting, and of picking fruit at Hill Farm, Alwalton. Hill Farm is a family run farm where you can pick your own fruit and veg fresh, locally, and in season. You can also buy readypicked fruit, BUT we all know that the delight is in picking it yourself.

It’s such an important lesson for children to learn where their food comes from, and it’s a tidy reminder for those of us with a few more years on the clock. A little ache from the picking, a prickle or two from the blackberry bush, and fingers red with the juice of ripe raspberries are a small price to pay, in fact I think they add to the pleasure of the first taste… …and every subsequent bite! Strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrant, gooseberries, and blackberries are usually ripe and available in July as well as spinach, courgettes and marrows, and that most delicious of fruit combining the best of the blackberry and the raspberry, the tayberry. Seasons can be unpredictable though, so do call ahead for up-to-date crop information, and perhaps I’ll bump into you in the strawberry field this month, or most likely buying an ice cream. Happy harvesting! St Swithin's Day, if thou dost rain, for forty days it will remain; St. Swithin's Day, if thou be fair, for forty days 'twill rain nae mair.

Fourfields This month, the word on everyone’s lips at Fourfields is sport, sport and more sport! To prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games, the school will host a two week extravaganza dedicated to all things health and fitness. Mr Horwood has arranged for the children to take part in a number of activities over the two weeks and, not to feel left out, the teachers will also be demonstrating their sporting talents in a series of ‘beat the teacher’ challenges. The school cricket team recently attended the Peterborough cricket finals. The team played with passion, resilience and good sportsmanship and were able to come away as winners. They will now head to the county finals later in the month where they hope to continue their success. Mr Brown was especially pleased with the way the children supported each other as well as other schools competing at the event. The start of July brings the annual A1

athletics competition. This year, five local schools will descend upon the Peterborough athletics track to try and run, throw and sweat their way to victory. Fourfields will be hoping to defend their title from last year, but above all want every child who takes part to have a great day. It isn’t just sporting activities that have been the focus of the term. Our head gardeners were invited to the Chelsea flower show in London where they looked for fresh ideas and inspiration from the professionals. After all of the work that the children have put in this year, the school garden is looking fantastic and a future career in gardening is certainly waiting for some of the pupils.

before they start as the majority of our children naturally move on to Holme School making the giant step feel less daunting for them. For more info on available sessions contact Victoria on 07842 192052 or visit http://holmevillagepre-school.co.uk

Holme Pre-school WOW....What an amazing interaction we had at our Yaxley Festival stall, our Hungry Caterpillar Playdough Fun was a huge hit, thanks for stopping by. It was great meeting the children and their families starting in September with us. Bookings for September 2016 sessions onwards are now being taken and we can now offer parents the option of longer all day sessions to help those returning to work along side our traditional Pre-school hours. At Holme Village Pre-school we pride ourselves in offering a small and personal setting for children aged 2, 3 and 4 years old. Where outdoor learning is at the core of the Pre-school and every child is valued and recognised as having a voice. We are registered for both the 3+ and 4+ nursery education grant scheme which entitles you to 15 hours FREE per week per child in pre-school settings. We are also registered for funded two year olds should the families qualify. Is your child planning on attending Holme C of E School in September? Our Pre-school is a great stepping-stone as we work closely with the school by introducing the transition gradually. Your child will also make friends

As our term has almost come to a close we want to update you with our recent activities. This half term we have been nurturing our freshly planted flowers and beans. Unfortunately someone has been a little hungry and started to snack on some of the leaves. After investigation we have decided that it may be some very hungry Catapillars. Our preschoolers have their very own pet Catapillars to take home and watch grow. Look out for the updates on our Folksworth Preschool Facebook page. So far they are behaving but you never know ! All of the children will bring them back in to preschool just before we break for the summer. Hopefully they will have turned into beautiful butterflies just in time so keep your eyes open for them in your gardens as we release them. Please remember the 16th July for our village fete and pop down to support us, we will have lots of entertainment and stalls as well as a bar. We look forward to seeing you there.

Sawtry Academy The students of Sawtry Village Academy have been given free bananas and apples to help maintain brain function during the exam period. The lovely staff at the Sawtry Cooperative Food have been providing free fruit every day for students who have been sitting their exams. It is known that bananas are great ‘Brain’ food as they contain vitamins, minerals and amino acids that may enhance brain function. Manager Peter MacColl said: “It has been great to be able to help and support the local community in Sawtry.” Good luck to all of our students who have been sitting their exams!

Little Acorns Our new baby unit has been open now for a couple of months and all the babies are very happy in their new environment. We would like to say a big thank you to everybody for their support. At Little Acorns we are in the process of the garden having a makeover. The children have really enjoyed watching the builders and the diggers in the garden as the transformation is taking place. They have been commenting on the changes and seem very excited to get outside and explore the

new toys and facilities. Last month the parents at Little Acorns have had the opportunity to come in and spend some time with their child at nursery and take part in some activities. The rose room and pre-school have been making octopuses. We still have some spaces available to start at Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori school in September, for more information please contact us on 01733 244000 or email us on littleacorns.daynursery@yahoo.co.uk

Yaxley Infants School This month Yaxley Infant School have been busy engaging with the local community to support us with our learning. Year 1 went to visit St Peter’s Church as part of their work on ‘Special Places’. They had a fantastic visit with Rev. Mark Fuller who explained the special parts of the church including the altar, the font and the lectern. The children had an opportunity to look around the church and explore the beautiful architecture as well as try and find the answer to some of their questions such as “Why are the chairs nailed down?” Our visit finished with a lively rendition of a story from the bible. In Foundation Stage they have been thinking about ‘People Who Help Us’ so have had a wide variety of visitors from the Yaxley community

sharing their expertise with the children. The list includes the PCSOs who came with the police car and let the children sit in the back and experience the sirens, the paramedics who gave up their day off and visited with their ambulance, and one of our Mums who shared with us the long list of tasks that need to be done when taking care of children. Foundation Stage finished their topic with a dressing up day. It was exciting to see the school full of police officers, mums, dads, firemen, doctors, nurses and the odd superhero! We are very grateful to everyone who has helped us. Having real experiences makes such an impact on the children’s learning so thank you from all at Yaxley Infant School.

FOOD & DRINK

Zest up your summer with some citrus zing Somehow, citrus fruit says ‘summer’ to me. Whether it’s spritzing up a drink, spiking up a barbecue marinade or bringing fabulous flavours to delectable desserts, the citrus family in general (and lemons in particular) are so versatile – and I, for one, couldn’t do without them! The first region in Europe to grow lemons in abundance was Liguria in Italy. Lemons have been cultivated there since the 15th century, and of course Italian cuisine has given us many citrusy delights, from dishes such as lemon & crab ravioli to their wonderful gelati or ices (including lemon sorbet), not to mention their famous Limoncello liqueur. But that doesn’t mean the Italians have a monopoly on luscious lemon-inspired recipes

Lemon Tart Ingredients Ready-rolled shortcrust pastry (sweet or plain) 5 free-range eggs 125ml double cream 225g caster sugar 4 lemons, juice and zest

Limoncello Liqueur Ingredients 6 unwaxed lemons 250g caster sugar 1 x 70cl bottle of vodka

... we Brits have numerous dishes in our repertoire, including Sussex Pond Pudding and Lemon Flummery. As for savoury dishes, the combination of lemon with freshly caught and cooked British fish such as brill, plaice and sole is a classic: these flat fish are absolutely delicious lightly sautéed in butter with capers and lemon juice, or served with a lemon beurre blanc. The first recipe below is for Lemon Tart, another traditional English dessert. It’s also

lovely served in slim fingers as part of an old-fashioned afternoon tea, alongside dainty sandwiches, scones and cake. Speaking of which, there’s a recipe for my Grandmother’s Lemon Drizzle Cake on my website (address below) – it’s one I’ve used for at least thirty years, and it’s always a resounding success! Why not have a go at home-made lemon curd, too? It’s easier than you think, and much tastier than the shop-bought variety.

Steps 1. Grease a 23cm flan tin, and line with the pastry. Line the pastry case with foil and baking beans and blind bake for 15 minutes at 200°C/Gas 6. Remove the foil and beans, and bake for a further 10-15 minutes.

4. Pour the filling into the pastry case and bake in the oven for about half an hour or so, but remove the tart whilst there’s still a very slight ‘wobble’ in the centre as it will continue to set as it cools.

2. Remove the tin and turn the oven down to 170°C/Gas 3½.

5. Dust with a little icing sugar, slice thinly and serve with afternoon tea; alternatively, cut into wedges and serve with a good vanilla ice cream for a delectable dessert.

3. Whisk the eggs together, then add the other ingredients and whisk again until thoroughly combined.

Steps 1. Wash and dry the lemons, then zest the fruits. 2. Squeeze the juice from the lemons. 3. Pour 100ml water into a small pan, add the lemon zest and sugar and bring slowly to the boil, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. 4. Simmer over a low heat for 15 minutes. 5. Add the lemon juice and simmer for a further 5 minutes.

6. Once completely cool, pour the lemony syrup into a sterilised preserving jar or container, then add the vodka. Shake well, and set aside in a cool, dark place for at least ten days, shaking the jar every day. 7. Strain into an attractive bottle. The flavour will intensify with keeping. 8. If using as a digestif, place the bottle in the freezer for a couple of hours before serving in ice-cold shot glasses. Alternatively, use in cocktails and desserts.

Wok & Eat sounds like the name of a cheap takeaway – which it is, but it’s deliciously cheap.

Review

Gazette

Wok & Eat is located on Columbus Road in Hempsted, Peterborough and opened on 15 April this year. Unlike many Asian cuisine takeaways, Wok & Eat is also a café, with a sleek, modern design and an open kitchen so you can see your food being made. Pricewise, this restaurant is gentle on your bank account. I ordered chilli beef with rice which costs £5.49 with a drink included and the portions are massive, I couldn’t finish it. On top of this, the service is amazing. I’ve ordered both delivery and eat-in service. The eat-in services was no more than five minutes, tops! The takeaway service is even better; it took just 10 minutes for my order to be ready which is ridiculously quick in comparison to similar takeaways where I’ve waited over an hour. The food is fresh, something which shows in the taste. With dishes including duck, pork, chicken, beef, seafood and vegetarian there is something suitable for everyone’s taste. It’s amazing! If you’re a lover of Chinese food then head down to 3 Columbus Road, Hempsted, Peterborough PE7 0LD or call 01733 555541 to order or ask for more information!

Neutering Part 3

L

ike with female dogs, there are health implications for entire (un-neutered) male dogs. Although, we don’t see many cases of testicular cancer and prostate problems overall – they are almost exclusively older entire male dogs and the conditions are considered relatively common in these dogs.

We’ve talked about the girls and now it’s time for the boys. Next up - male dogs. Testicular cancer it is often curable with castration (neutering) but it can spread to vital organs when it can be fatal. Often castration will help with prostate problems too. Entire male dogs are also at an increased risk of complicated hernias (when internal organs protrude through the muscle layers). Most need repair and the surgery can be complex, possibly needing specialist intervention. The overall incidence of these problems is quite low but this probably because the majority of owners neuter their male dogs at a young age for other reasons – namely behavioural! There are many undesirable behaviours exhibited by entire male dogs. They are more likely to; • be territorial (marking it with their strong smelling urine - even in your home!) • display dominant behaviour • be aggressive with other dogs • be the target of other dog’s aggression • display unwanted mounting behaviour (often a sign of sexual frustration) • escape and roam while looking for a mate, increasing the risk of being involved in a road accident. (Male dogs have been known to scale large fences and break down doors when they smell a female in season!)

It’s true to say testosterone can take over their lives - always seeking a female to mate with. Of course every dog (and owner) is different so you may not get all of these behaviours or medical problems but all are linked to testosterone. Castration is a relatively straight forward procedure which only requires a day’s visit to the Vets.It involves surgically removing the testes (therefore stopping the production of testosterone) under general anaesthetic. Although their exercise should be restricted for 7-10 days, most dogs recover and bounce back in 24-36 hours. Generally the younger they are, the quicker they recover. We recommend castrating dogs at around 6-12 months old depending on their size and breed – your Vet will advise you on this. There’s one more thing to talk about on this subject and it’s a fancy word called “cryptorchid”. This is the word Vets use to describe a dog whose testes haven’t descended and are retained within the body. If this happens the risk of the medical problems mentioned above are FAR FAR more likely to affect them later in life. If your dog is cryptorchid, we urge to have them neutered ASAP for health reasons (even if their behaviour is fine!).

If you have any questions about neutering, please ask your Vet or call Cromwell Vets on 01487 800199 (Sawtry surgery).

GARDEN VIEW

Garden ornaments

By Rachel Leverton

Ornaments polarise gardeners. They’re a love ‘em or hate ‘em subject.

I

fell firmly into the hate ‘em category. I thought they had a place in big country gardens but looked slightly tacky in suburbia. This antipathy may date back to my childhood and Mrs. Frost, our elderly neighbour, who had a front garden stuffed to the brim with gnomes, windmills and concrete toadstools. If our ball ever strayed into this shrine to kitsch she’d burst from her house with a banshee-like scream, brandishing a broom at us. Somewhere along the way though I’ve mellowed. As I’ve studied show gardens and magazines I’ve realised that ornaments have a definite place in a garden as long as two important considerations are met: Context The ornaments complement the style of the garden. Classical statuary doesn’t work in contemporary spaces, while traditional gardens might need to avoid stainless steel or modern, abstract sculptures.

Size Ornaments should be an appropriate size for the setting. Rules are there to be broken of course and whatever your garden type or size the ornament you choose should be special to you. My father had a grumpy gargoylelike creature, set among ferns at the bottom of his patch. It made everyone who saw it smile in recognition of my dad’s own avuncular manner. A girly friend of mine has a series of small bronze faeries set around her tiny plot, which are perfectly in tune with her personality. I favour natural materials myself but several years ago I purchased beautiful and rather elegant heron created from recycled metal. I adore it because it reflects both my love of birds and my passion for recycling. It stands near a boulder fountain and I occasionally brandish a broomstick at my sons when their football strays too near...

Ornament Ideas… ...not a gnome in sight! To set off ornamental grasses try ceramic balls in vivid blues and greens set among cobbles. For minimalist contemporary plots, mirrored columns and pyramids look striking. Classical statuary and urns look best in more formal, traditional settings. They are best made from marble or stone. Resin copies can look tacky. Don’t be frightened to show your sense of humour. Quirky can look brilliant in the right setting. Sculptor Dennis Fairweather’s best seller is a stone face and hands which emerge from a tub of water as if the figure had just been for a dip! Natural materials can be a good starting point for garden ornament novices. Balls and sculptures made from willow are subtle and elegant additions to any garden.

Finances should be more liquid than usual and you may be tempted to splash out to impress the new faces that are coming into your life or just to blow off some steam. Watch out for someone trying to dirty your reputation with gossip about your personal life.

Cancer June 23-July 23 Old flames think they can re-enter your life, as quickly as they last departed. You have moved on though, and should be enjoying yourself too much to even acknowledge them. Your mental state at present is way above par; you know what you want and where you are going.

Leo July 24-August 23

Face financial worries; don’t ignore them. Solutions are available from more unexpected sources than you think. All you have to do is put out the initial feelers. A friend needs a favour, which is above and beyond the call of duty but for some reason you’re willing to put yourself out for them.

Virgo August 24-September 23 Don’t be afraid to speak up. If you don’t take control of the situations in your life then others will. An older face that means a lot to you is going through a hard time but leave them to make the final decision on something, which could prove life changing for them.

HITACHI HD TV 32" HDMI/Scart/Remote. Good working condition. £60 ono. T: 01733 242619 (Stilton) or T: 07801 826796. Will deliver locally.

Libra September 24-October 23 Please be careful what you say about your personal life to new friends and faces. The stars are making you far more candid than usual and you may end up saying things that you will later regret. Remember that your words will not be forgotten, especially by the older generation.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 Fun times link to a face you know well and who you haven’t seen in the last two months. You have recently been discovering quite a few different sides to your personality and the most interesting one is the exploratory mood that your ruling planet mars is having upon you.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Your ruling planet Jupiter offers last minute exciting travel this month. If you don’t like the situation you are in then sit tight but don’t cause an atmosphere. It will take a long time to clear if you do. The home is under some important influences and major work is likely to be in the planning.

Stunning antique red leather 3 piece suite in excellent condition. 3 seater sofa and 2 arm chairs. Cost £2000 will accept £1250 ovno. T: 01733 240912 for more info.

Capricorn December 22-January 20 Events that transpired last month have left you with little time on your hands to take on new things. Indeed the tying up of events is what this month is all about. Make sure you finish with style and don’t leave it to others, or you’ll end up ruining what started out as a professional job. Aquarius January 21-February 19 This month you spend most of your time organising things you have already gone over several times. Nerves appear to be playing a key role in the way you are acting and the sooner you make that phone call, the sooner you’ll get that answer you’ve been waiting for.

If it's your birthday this month

A new way to do your job is found and makes your life an easier place to be. New flirtations come with a price. Check out what it is before you go any further. You are likely to be feeling overtired from all the mental work you have been doing, you need to rest from time to time.

Mr S contacted us regarding his existing mortgage. His mortgage was with a high street lender and he had been paying the standard variable rate for several years. After researching the market we managed to reduce his monthly mortgage payments by over £200 per month. The savings he made allowed him to book a holiday in Majorca later this year.

Mr J and Ms K wanted to get on the property market by buying a new build house using the Government’s Help to Buy scheme. Mr J had existing debt problems dating back 3 years ago with defaults totaling £30,000 and missed mortgage payments. We were able to arrange a mortgage with a specialist lender requiring a deposit of only 5%.

Mr and Mrs F had £47,000 of loans, credit cards and store cards and were paying £1,652 per month. Mr F also had some missed and late payments on his credit file due to the number of accounts he was trying to juggle every month. We were able to consolidate all their debts into a new mortgage which freed up almost £1000 every month. They were offered a credit repair product and in two years’ time we will be able to remortgage them again to a high street lender once their credit rating has improved.

As independent mortgage advisers we have access to over 10,000 mortgage products. We also offer exclusive mortgage products which are not available from the high street. Contact us today to see how we can help you!
