It’s all happening locally! We have many great summer events on pages 16 - 17. One of the big events in the July calendar is The Lancaster Club’s Weekend Beer Festival. This coincides with the Club also celebrating 50 years! If you haven’t ventured to the Lido yet they also have some exciting events coming up on page 24. Having lived in Farcet for many years, it’s great to see the building in the cemetery being put to good use. You can read more about this on page 21. Clayton of Install Fascias, our local guttering guru, helped a local Yaxley resident who was a victim of a rougue trader. Find out more on page 7. Farmer Tom is getting ready to harvest his produce. In this issue Tom is talking about how the recent, rainy weather was good news for crop farmers, allowing them to gain extra yield. Our community is really thriving and it’s great to be a part of it, but please remember to support local businesses and shop local. And always let us know if you are investing in the local area, it would be great to hear your story. Don’t forget to check out the Yaxley Gazette Facebook group, it has plenty of news from our area and is a great way to discuss local topics.

Due to circumstances beyond our control I am again on the lookout for new or, returning Guide leaders!
HOLME WI Alison McGuinness, President
A Different Language & Viking Invasion Not at the same time though! Holme WI recently hosted the Annual Group Meeting, when the four WIs in our group area; ourselves, Ramsey, Ramsey Abbey and Ramsey St. Mary’s all meet up. This year we were invaded by a group of Vikings, or more specifically Vikings from the Russian regions. We enjoyed a talk about Viking life in East Anglia, including the very basic but sometimes necessary surgery and occasional tooth pulling, which was undertaken with some rather crude surgical instruments. Then, a Saxon lady told us all about the clothing; how they spun and dyed their wool to make garments, and she displayed examples of the type of tapestries and garments they made, along with amber and bead jewellery. Viking women would always be busy, as bread was made each day along with many pints of beer, as there wasn’t any clean drinking water, so beer was drunk instead. We also had a boisterous weapons demonstration with axes, swords and shields, which ended with a charge and a shield wall ... look out on the front row, ladies!
A group of our ladies also drove to Chatteris on a lovely day in May for a fabulous morning watching Steve and his team at the London Glass Blowing Company. They were thoroughly looked after from a very informative talk and demonstration to coffee and homemade cake afterwards. There were some amazing pieces of his craft on display to purchase and we will definitely be going back during his open weekends to show family and other friends and make some more purchases! Our June guest speaker was Jane Kennedy, a British Sign Language Tutor. Jane taught us how to sign our own name, we learnt the alphabet and we also sang along and signed at the same time to The Rainbow Song. As we became more adventurous with our signing Jane also taught us some of the finer nuances of words, so that we wouldn’t sign a rude word by mistake! By the end of the evening we were signing (and um sort of singing) to Louis Armstrong’s Wonderful World and Hello by Adele. I was so pleased she didn’t pick a faster song, keeping up with Jane was a challenge. A fantastic evening, Jane is a brilliant guest speaker and we all had a really good time.
Anyone interested in joining, please do come along and see what we are all about and what we get up to. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. Please contact holmewi2015@gmail.com for further details.

Guides are girls between 10 and 14. In particular, we are trying to add extra Unit helpers staff in one unit to accommodate some additional needs. If you could spare just an hour-and-a-half – every week, or just occasionally, we need help to continue giving girls of all ages an adventurous and safe programme. Maybe you were a leader before but somehow Guiding slipped down your list of priorities? Please get in touch! You don’t need any experience, however, you simply have to be over 18, enthusiastic and happy to be DBS checked. Training is on the job. Men are also welcome! Please help! We would hate to have to close units for lack of leaders. Thanks and I hope to meet you soon. Guide Dogs Charity encourages residents to volunteer for My Guide service My Guide is a guiding service that matches trained sighted volunteers to people with sight loss who need support getting out and about. As part of Volunteers’ Week, Guide Dogs wants to thank current volunteers for their contribution and welcome new recruits. Guide Dogs currently helps more than 1,000 people with sight loss through My Guide, but more volunteers are needed. Each partnership is focused on achieving a set goal – from building confidence, increasing physical fitness, working towards a guide dog partnership, tackling social isolation or supporting hobbies or pastimes. Volunteers typically spend around two or more hours a week supporting a My Guide partnership, at times that are convenient for both them and the person with sight loss. My Guide volunteer, Beverly Morgan said: “My partner and I were
fostering a little girl, but I was looking to do some voluntary work whilst she was at school when a friend told me about the My Guide service at Guide Dogs. “I gave it a go, and I was struck at how warm and welcoming staff at Guide Dogs were. I completed my training and was soon matched with my first service user Shauna. “I felt apprehensive at first, but Shauna is so chatty and easy to get on with, that soon I relaxed. We attend a knitting group together each week and it feels good knowing I am doing something useful to help someone else.” Guide Dogs is aiming to provide 1,200 more My Guide partnerships in 2019 – that’s more than 187,000 volunteering hours to fill.

Public urged to stay fire safe in hot weather Cambridgeshire residents have been urged to stay fire safe when outdoors this summer. With temperatures forecast to be similarly high to last year, fires in open areas of land can easily spread and potentially become out of control. Group Commander Paul Clarke, head of community fire safety at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We want to help ensure that people enjoy the sunny weather while it’s here safely. High temperatures and dry areas of land can be perfect conditions for a fire to spread. Something as simple as not stubbing a cigarette out properly, or using a disposable barbecue on grass, can start a fire that can develop quickly.” There are seven simple steps we urge residents to take to help prevent an outdoor fire: q Ensure cigarettes are completely out w Do not throw cigarettes out of car windows onto grass verges or vegetation e Put disposable barbecues on bricks, do not place directly on grass r Do not leave glass bottles lying on the ground, the sun’s rays reflect through the glass and can start a fire

Guttering guru Clayton comes to the 'rescue' of rogue trader victim
business sense
businesssense Not all super heroes where capes – as long-standing Safe Local Trades member Clayton Fisher of Install Fascias proved when he came to the rescue of a victim of rogue traders The lady from Stamford become worried about handing over a staggering £800 quoted by doorstep ‘cowboy builders’ who had called at her doors and carried out work replacement guttering at her property. Feeling extremely anxious about handing over the cash when they had arranged to collected the money later that day, she contacted Clayton after seeing a Safe Local Trades advert in a local magazine. Once he saw the work and knew they were coming back, STL member Clayton Fisher of Install Fascias and Cladding advised her to contact the police, and took photos of the work whilst the rogue traders were off site. Clayton said: “She had engaged with a company that called at her door and agreed to get some new guttering on her conservatory. She wasn't happy with the work but they were coming back later that day to collect the £800 they had quoted. “She was beside herself as she and didn't want to hand over the money
as she could see that the job was horrendous. Having spoken to SLT, we were advised to contact the police right away. I spoke to Cambridgeshire Police and they suggested she report it immediately.” Bravely, the lady then walked to her local police station to report this; officers from Lincolnshire Police arranged to come to her property at the designated time when they were due back to collect their money waiting at her property to arrest the rogue traders when they returned to collect the cash. Unsurprisingly, the telephone number displayed on rogue company van was not recognised, the name unknown and there was no Internet trace of them. Clayton then arranged to reinstall the guttering the following week. stepped in to repair the damage caused. He said: “The conservatory guttering was removed with the ring beam cover and the gutter brackets had been snapped off.
“The box gutter at the rear of the conservatory had been blocked up with expanding foam at both ends which meant the water was not draining away, consequently the box gutter was filling up and leaking
are the very essence of Safe Local Trades, and thank goodness for this lady that she was able to make
The customer was delighted that the job had now been carried out to the highest standard with the repairs undertaken by Clayton inside the conservatory. The lead flashing has been destroyed at both ends of the box gutter and the ends of the box gutter had been cut off which leads into the integral guttering.” The customer was delighted that the job had now been carried out to the highest standard with the repairs carried out by Clayton. Eileen Le Voi, director of Safe Local Trades said: “Members like Clayton
contact with him and follow his advice of contacting the police, which she bravely did and more importantly, kept hold of her cash. “Clayton showed true professionalism as well as compassion for one of the growing number of elderly people in this area who suffer misery and pressure from doorstep and rogue traders.

Ready, Steady, MOW! Choosing the right mower for your lawn Regular mowing is the key to an attractive, green and healthy lawn. You’ll need a mower, but which one should you choose?
Small lawns Many suburban homes have tiny lawns. A manual push lawn mower or rotary mower is powered by you pushing it rather than by electricity. The blades are mounted in a cylinder, which revolves when the mower is pushed. This produces a precise, even mowing result. They tend to be very compact which makes them manoeuvrable and easy to store.
Small or medium-sized lawn If your lawn is a little bigger or you don’t fancy a manual mower, an electric lawn mower might be for you. They run from a power source and make light work of your lawn. Electric mowers for smaller lawns are usually very easy to manoeuvre around objects. Most come with a handy container or bag to collect clippings. They are also pretty quiet and are

available in energy-efficient versions. Just be aware that even with a small lawn you will probably need an extension cord. It’s wise to invest in a power breaker for safety. Accidents do happen.
Larger lawn Petrol mowers are good bigger lawns, where an extension cord becomes impractical. These mowers are powerful, but also heavy as they are often quite sizeable. They are less environmentally friendly because of the exhaust emissions. If you have more than 500 square metres of grass, you’ll probably be better off with a ride-on petrol mower. All lawn mowers are available in various mowing widths. Generally speaking, the wider the lawn mower, the quicker you’ll get the job done. But you need to consider that wider mowers are less manoeuvrable. As a rule of thumb small lawns require a mowing width of around 29-33cm (1113 inches); medium-sized lawns require a mowing width of around 38cm (15 inches).; large lawns may require widths larger than this, but all choices will depend on whether the lawn is ornamental, with
features like ponds and trees, in which case a smaller mower might be better, or whether it’s more of an open grassy space. Most mowers are height adjustable. In other words, you can increase or decrease the distance between the blades and the ground to cut the grass at just the right height for you or the time of year. You can now buy mulching mowers. These cut the grass clippings into tiny pieces and blow
them evenly into the grass. This method has the advantage of preventing the soil from drying out and gives fungus less chance to develop. A strimmer is a useful gadget for neatening up along walls, fences and the edge of flowerbeds. You can get more powerful versions which will let you attack weeds too. It’s best to wear safety goggles when using one as they generate a lot of flying debris.

Look out for the
Hornet hoverfly They are big. They are photogenic. And they are in disguise. Give welcome to some of Britain’s most spectacular hoverflies. Even if one travelled the world, it is unlikely that you would encounter larger or more memorable hoverflies. Yet the chances are that the Hornet hoverfly Volucella zonaria lives at or very close your address . Hoverflies are mimics of stinging or biting insects and this big beast mimics the European hornet. At times these hoverflies can be very active and difficult to approach. However, when they are preoccupied feeding at flowers or sun bathing, they tend to rely on their mimicry to permit close approach. The key question, ‘am I looking at a fly or not’? Hoverflies have short antennae. Bees and most wasps have long antennae, and in the case of social and solitary wasps the antennae have an elbow bend near the base. That difference is very easy to spot. Female hoverflies do not have pollen baskets on their hind legs. Flies have only 2 wings, the hind pair reduced to drumsticks functioning as gyroscopes.

farm land
farmland
After an arid April, a mixed May, and a June when at one point we thought the rain would never stop, our waiting for the waters to recede has given way to more waiting; this time for harvest. July is the month when harvest really gets underway, starting with our winter-sown barley and rape seed crop, the latter of which could be crushed, on the supermarket shelves, and then hopefully in your frying pan in just a few short weeks. With very dry period in March and April, harvest looked to be early this year, but June’s deluge is likely to push it back to the more traditional second half of July, with the main wheat harvest in early to mid August. This is good news really as every day extra that our crop is green and growing generates additional yield. Last year, when the late spring rains failed, with them when the hills,
particularly in the spring-sown crops, and so you can see why farmers spend so much time looking at the weather forecast. With harvest arriving shortly, and with the working day lengthening to the point where I may well shortly be spending twice as much time in a combine cab as I do in my own bed, I’m going to bring in some harvest help, and invite Mrs Farmer Tom (Lisa) to bring your August update. I’m sure you’ll enjoy her musings about life on the farm! Until then, enjoy all the wonderful, seasonal fruits of this fantastic time of year, and thanks for supporting British farmers and food producers!

Farcet C. of E. Primary It’s hard to believe that the academic year is drawing to a close and our children have been accepted at their chosen schools
Farcet C. of E. Primary It has been a busy few weeks here at Farcet! We have been working very hard to develop our reflection garden and with the help Kingsgate Church and our school community, we have created a beautiful space for prayer and reflection. We are all very grateful to those who gave their time or donated plants, thank you! Our Year 3 and 4 children enjoyed their visit to Flag Fen as part of their ‘I am warrior’ topic. They met Boudicca and a Roman soldier and were able to experience what life was like during this period. In the afternoon, the children became archaeologists and took part in a dig, they loved uncovering the artefacts! Our Year 1 and 2 children enjoyed sharing their ‘Land Ahoy!’ learning with their parents and carers this month. They loved dressing up as pirates and sharing their super writing.
Holme Pre-School Wow! What a half term! Thank you to everyone who has donated, attending and supported our lovely little Pre-school at The Official re-opening of the play equipment at the Admiral Wells. With a fun range of activities and stalls we managed to raise a fantastic £250 for some new Small world toys for the children. Thank you Everyone! Did you also know that Holme Village Pre-school now offer extended sessions? We are open 8:30am to 5:30pm Monday to Thursday, term-time. Why not pop over to discuss your childcare needs?
Although this always brings about mixed emotions from parents and children, well planned transition helps support the families take the next step on their child’s academic path. However, this does not stop or slow down the fun and learning here at Folksworth Preschool.
This terms home learning project is raising a caterpillar at home. Our children will enjoy caring for a caterpillar at home and taking responsibility for his or her own pet. Many of the children have named their new pet, one being called spike.... we can’t wait to see what happens next and talking about why and how things change.
Yaxley Infants Our whole school curriculum is centred around the Social Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL)
Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School We are all enjoying the sunny weather, the children are enjoying lots of water play and messy activities We have also been exploring the gardens looking for different bugs. We also have had a pet week, children have been bringing in their own pets to show their friends. The preschool are getting ready to leave us ahead of their new adventure to “big school”, they are enjoying visits from the primary schools they will be attending, meeting their new teachers and finding out exciting information about their new school. Thank you to Laura from Yaxley church who came in to speak to the children, we hope to see you soon.
Children are encouraged to make the right choices inside and outside of school. In assemblies we talk about characters to help us make sense of the choices we can make and ways to solve problems. Embedded across the school are the characters “Tommy Tortoise” and “Ritzy Rat”. Tommy makes rational choices and thinks carefully before doing or saying the right thing whereas Ritzy Rat struggles to make good choices, is impulsive and can upset people. We are all Ritzy Rats sometimes! Every half term children are chosen by the staff to win an Integrity award and are given a Tommy Tortoise for the good choices they have made. Last half term our award winners were: Franco, Florence, Henry, Kia, Bianca, Victoria, Jacob, Evie, Alicia, Isla, Harvey, Skylar, Lewis, Noah and Emily. Well done to all the children for their hard work and integrity! Our Reception classes are now nearly full for September
which is great news. Transitions for children and making relationships with parents started in June and it has been lovely to see all the children’s new faces. We will update you with how the transitions have gone and also exciting new additions to the outdoor reception classroom. We are now trying to recruit new governors. As a governor you would offer support to help with the running of the school. Governors meetings are termly and usually held in the evenings although some meetings can be during the school day. If you are interested in this rewarding role and want to give something back to the Yaxley community, then please give us a call on the number below.

On May 26 our latest entry in our register is for Eleanor (Ellie). It was

A child going missing is every parent’s worst nightmare And many books have been written with this as the main plot device, as the parents try to cope with events that follow. However, this debut novel approaches it from a different angle. Esme is 11 years old and for her, ballet is life. She is on the brink of every young ballerina’s dream as she is told that she is ready to go ‘en pointe’. But this joy is snatched from her one evening as the family gather to enjoy a meal. Suddenly, and inexplicably, Esme’s four-yearold sister Lily disappears. The family starts to fall apart, but as readers we experience this through the eyes of Esme, not her parents. In the second half of the novel the action switches to Paris eight years later where Esme is performing as a ballerina. We learn of the intervening years. How Esme felt that she lost so much more than a sister; she lost her parents too. She has used dance to take herself away from it all. Until she receives a phone call from her older sister, on the other side of the Atlantic. Are the family about to learn of Lily’s fate, and how will they bring themselves together, healing divisions and unspoken accusations?
The Tiger who Came to Tea
goodread By Willow Coby
by Judith Kerr
good read
A Lily in the Light
Sometimes days play out in endless repetition. Nothing exciting ever happens. But what if one day the unexpected occurred? Just like any day Sophie is having tea in the kitchen with her mother, when the doorbell rings. They wonder who it could be. The milkman with his milk float? The grocer on his bike? Or Sophie’s daddy? What they are not expecting is a large tiger, who joins them at the table. Just what will happen when a tiger comes to tea? This classic children’s picture book is now more than 50 years old and yet it still continues to enchant children. A simple story and delightful illustrations make this a favourite among many young readers. A TV adaptation is due to air at the end of 2019 but do make sure you share the original with your children first. Judith Kerr, who wrote and illustrated over 30 other books, including the Mog series, died in May this year aged 95. It seems a perfect time to celebrate her life.

Peterborough Beer Festival Tuesday 20 – Satuday 24 August Peterborough Embankment The most flavoursome of festivals pitches up its giant marquees again at Peterborough Embankment from the 20th August. Now in its 42nd year, this five-day celebration showcases the very best real ale, real cider, key keg and craft beer. The organisers behind the biggest outdoor beer festival in the UK have a mission, a mission to search out the finest selection of more than 450 beers for thier customers to enjoy and continue to talk about long after they have finished drinking. For serious aficionados, there is an exclusive selection of rare and one-off specials from local and national breweries on the singles bar. This festival aims to cater for everyone, glutenfree, vegan, low-alcohol and alcohol-free options are all available. Just check the beer list in the festival programme where options will be highlighted or ask at the bars. It’s not all just about the beer though, the extremely popular gin and wine bars will be stocking a massive range of unique and specialist gins, alongside still and sparkling grape wines from some of the amazing vineyards we have right here in the UK. the appeal of the
Summer Fete
By Karen Campbell
Summer surely isn’t summer without a village fete Part country fair, part a sale of homegrown and locally made produce, part a celebration of community, the English village fete is a social institution, barely changed since the 1920s. The Village fete is enshrined in our literary history, from The Famous Five, to PG Wodehouse and Agatha Christie, the Village fete has provided the perfect backdrop against which to set a drama or two, and never attend any fete in Midsomer which is also attended by Inspector Barnaby! If you want a measure of how well a village is thriving in 21st Century Britain, take a look at its summer fete. More of us are looking for a sense of community in a Britain that seems in danger of fragmenting. To that end tenth generation locals will rub shoulders with commuters, second
homers and young families, to discuss the merits of Bert’s onions, Sharon’s Victoria Sponge, and whether young Tyler will win the talent competition with his street dance routine. Let’s face it, where else can you buy a pot of rhubarb and ginger preserve, enter a competition to guess the weight of a cake, bounce on a bouncy castle and throw a wet sponge at the vicar…or scoutmaster…or head teacher, or all three if you’re lucky? Village fetes are alive and well in Britain, and I for one am very happy about that. I have just moved from the town to a village and intend to enter my scones in the baked goods competition this year. I doubt I’ll win but it’s the taking part that matters. Now I wonder if there will be a murder…

health and wellbeing
Peterborough Lido Peterborough’s much-loved Lido opened its doors for the summer season on Sat 25 May with the Mayor of Peterborough cutting the ribbon to let customers in Approx. 700 visitors enjoyed a day of free swimming. Steve, Vivacity’s general manager said “We would like to thank Peterborough City Council for their continued support and investment in to the Lido and we are excited for another Summer season. Our staff started working on the Lido in January and the Friends Of Peterborough Lido recruited volunteers for additional support. We have extended the cafe and it’s offering to include healthier food and vegetarian options. We hope to see you all there.” The Lido has 3 heated, outdoor pools; a large 50m main pool with an opportunity for lane swimming and family splash, a learner pool for children and a paddling pool for toddlers. There’s also an outdoor café(recently extended), children’s play area, family picnic lawn and terraces with views of Peterborough Cathedral. Visit vivacity.org/lido to find out more.
The Lido is open Monday - Sunday. Normal opening hours are 9am-7pm with the exception of Wednesdays and Sundays, which open at 7:30am giving early bird swimmers the chance to use the pool earlier than usual. Prices start from £4.30 for children under 16 and £5.40 for adults. There are plenty of events to get involved in this season at the Lido, including the return of ‘Summer Solstice.’ There is a breakfast swim including breakfast between 4:45am-6:45am at £12.50 and a Sunset & midnight swim including dinner between 8pm12:30am at £17.50. This year, you can get involved in Peterborough Pride swims, including a transgender & non-binary session and a LGBTQIA session. Plus, there will be midnight swim sessions on Fri 12 Jul and Fri 9 Aug between 9:30pm and 12:30am.
Pool Power! Stay cool in a pool this summer
Kids love to splash in a pool on a hot summer’s day. If you are thinking of buying one, we have some top tips Inflatable pools These are easily inflated so can be up and filled as soon as the sunshine appears. Smaller inflatable pools are ideal for toddlers and can be inflated by one person with a good set of lungs, but larger pools can accommodate the whole family - you will probably prefer to inflate these with a pump! Quick up pools These are super-easy to set up. Spread the pool out and inflate the top ring. The design of the pool means that as you fill it with water the sides of the pool will rise up. These are particularly good if storage space is tight.
Frame pools Sturdier pools with a bigger bathing area. Frame pools are ideal for larger families and groups of teens. Look for rust-resistant galvanised metal frames; heavyduty PVC and polyester 3-ply walls; beams and joints that pin or snap together for fast, easy construction. A filter pump to keep the water clean, and a repair patch kit to mend small tears or punctures. Site your pool on a level surface, with plenty of room to make it easy and safe to get in and out. Remember, toddlers and young children should be supervised at all times.

A-head of the Game Choose the Perfect Hat
cheek to chic
Weddings, Race events, Polo; there are many opportunities throughout the summer to wear a hat, but which one should you choose? How do you avoid making an expensive mistake? By Sarah Davey First you need to look at your face shape. Ovalshaped faces can get away with almost any style. A large brimmed hat should be tilted backwards slightly so that it frames your face. If you have a square or round face, choose a hat with a large brim and wear it slanted. A long face looks lovely with a beret style or even a Matador style. Glasses can be a bit tricky but choose a hat with an upturned brim style so that it doesn't feel like you are hiding behind a lot of face furniture! There is a bit of an art to hat wearing. You need to think about your hairstyle. Hair should complement the hat. Hats nearly always look better worn with hair up, because it accentuates the neck. Small hats should rest just above the eyebrow, they look wrong perched on the very top of the head. If in doubt, ask the stylist in the shop. They will be trained to help you choose the right piece and talk you through how to wear it to best effect. Try lots of styles, colours and textures. Make the most of trained staff. Let them be your guide. They will get a kick out of finding exactly the right hat for you. Don't shy away from 'big' hats because they generally look smaller once they are actually on your head Most people start with an outfit and try to find a hat to complement it. But it might be
better to do it the other way around. If you fall in love with a hat that's a real statement piece, then you should keep your dress and accessories minimal to allow it to take centre stage. If you've already got the outfit though, then pick out elements such as colour or fabric, to try and match. Exact matches are not necessary, sometimes complementing tones work better. If you are very lucky you might have a dress and hat hire establishment in your town. This can be an excellent way to get the outfit and hat of your dreams for a fraction of the cost of buying it outright. At the end of the day you have to feel happy, confident and comfortable in your chosen hat. Physical comfort is the most important factor. You shouldn't pick anything you feel you have to fuss or fidget with; you should feel completely confident. As the hat designer Piers Atkinson says, "Make sure the hat doesn't wear you; you wear the hat!"

legally binding
legallybinding Kerry shares a little about her experience and aspirations, and how this can help to benefit you in your journey to your dream home or investment ...
Kerry McQuade Heartland Mortgage Services
Home is where the is I was born and bred in Yaxley attending William de Yaxley and my Nan being born in Yaxley in the early 1920s when there was only Broadway and Main Street. I lived myself in Yaxley until I was 22 years old. I currently live in Coates with my husband Lee and our two dogs Peppa and Betty. I have worked within the financial services industry for the last 12 years. My first job being a mortgage underwriter for Norwich and Peterborough Building Society. This is where my love of mortgages began! I have then since worked in senior positions in both banking and estate agency, including becoming an award-winning mortgage broker in my own right. I set up Heartland Mortgage Services from a desire to provide a stress-free, impartial home buying service for individuals,
couples and families throughout the Peterborough and Cambridgeshire. My aim is to work with my clients from the initial stages of seeing how much they are able to borrow, all the way through the mortgage and legal process and up until they move into the house. I use my estate agency experience to save money on behalf of my clients during negotiations. I also keep in touch with clients, contacting them annually to renew their buildings and contents insurance, offer protection reviews for life cover, critical illness cover and income protection. I also will contact my clients 6 months prior to their deal ending to ensure that they have enough time to refinance a new deal to start as soon as their current one ends. Many clients will sit on a lender’s standard variable rate for years and not look to refinance their deal and waste money on unnecessary interest.
The benefit to customers is that I work solely for the client and work in their best interest. My job as your mortgage broker is do the hard work for you when it comes to arranging a mortgage and to save clients time, stress, money and hassle. I look at thousands of mortgage deals across the whole of the market and recommend the most affordable lender for your needs. As I am not employed by an estate agent or bank I have no conflict of interest and my sole aim is to save you money on your purchase and mortgage. I can assist in the early stages with how to look for a property online, what price bandings, individual criteria and areas they should be looking at depending on their circumtances. I then will monitor the property portals every day, email the client when a suitable property is available and arrange a viewing for them on their behalf. I also conduct research on the
property so I have an initial idea of how much my client should look to offer. I take pride in saving my clients time and money on their important investment. I love spending time with family and friends and love to walk our dogs around Coates especially Feldale Lake – which is such a beautiful place to spend time My ultimate aim is to be a key lifestyle provider for Peterborough and Cambridgeshire and a multi advisor mortgage brokerage with a team of likeminded individuals who have a passion for providing a friendly and stress free experience with a world class customer service. I am currently on the look out for the right people to join my team. Clients have kindly shared their reviews on the Heartland Mortgage Services Facebook Page and the Heartland Mortgage Services Facebook Page Feefo Review Page.

Money Matters
Divorce costs often hit the headlines when we learn that multi-millionaires have spent £000’s, in reality the “average” divorce costs much less
by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
Top tips for keeping costs down
q Take advantage of a free initial consultation
At Woolley & Co we offer a free 30 minute consultation which allows us to obtain basic information about you and your circumstances and we can then discuss key issues in your situation and the options for dealing with them.
w Consider all options for resolving any disputes
There are now a number of methods for discussing and settling the financial and other issues that arise on separation or divorce such as negotiation or mediation. A lawyer will explore these with you. There is no “one size fits all” solution.
e Do your homework A lawyer cannot give you definite advice about a proposed financial settlement without full information. You can prepare by gathering together the documents and information your lawyer requires as early as possible.
Consider where you and your children will live. If you want to stay in your home can you afford to do so? If the house is sold, could you afford to purchase a suitable property for you and your children? Speak to mortgage advisors to find out what your mortgage capacity is and to estate agents to see how much other suitable properties may cost.
t Be clear on the costs from the start
Your Lawyer should give you a breakdown of all the likely costs involved and in many cases will be able to offer a fixed price for the divorce or other specific stages. Perhaps the most important piece of advice I can give is that the more you can agree with your spouse, the cheaper your case is likely to be overall.

MAKING TAX DIGITAL VAT Update
r Do some thinking too
Your local divorce & family law specialist

Keeping divorce costs down
HMRC’s latest MTD policy update means supplier statements can now be used to record expenses for input tax purposes; a big time saving for many businesses that adopt spreadsheet accounting or those that have many monthly invoices. A controversial policy of HMRC has always been that a business using, for example, the cash accounting scheme and spreadsheets to record their expenses had to record every single purchase invoice in a digital format even though the business might make a single payment to a supplier based on a statement covering perhaps 40 or 50 different invoices. It would be sensible for the business to make a one-line entry based on the payment total. With the cash accounting scheme input tax is only claimed when payments are made to suppliers. That policy has now changed. The updated notice has also confirmed that petty cash expenses can be posted as a single total if no individual receipt within the posting exceeds £50 and the total of all receipts does not exceed £500 per entry. Both figures are VAT inclusive.
Change of address Bird & Co are moving from their current address in Holme Road Yaxley to 183 Main Street Yaxley (previously known as Sophie T’s vintage tea room). An exact date for the move is not known as internal changes are being done, but a rough date will be the end of July/early August 2019. Further details will be announced in due course, but of course all of our client’s will be notified as will everyone else.

HOW TO AVOID
Summer fraud and the postholiday burglar blues Whether you’ve already booked a week in the sun, are planning a short family break – or have yet to grab a last-minute getaway – don’t get caught up in the holiday blues this summer Holiday security is as important to add to your checklist as the usual ‘money, tickets, passport’ mantra. And there is plenty to consider; last year, holiday scamming accounted for around £7 million being ‘stolen’ from holiday makers, according to research - with more than 5,000 people the victims of holiday booking fraud. Travel association ABTA said victims lost an average of £1,380 each, having bought bogus airline tickets, accommodation or organised tours. It said fraudsters were using increasingly sophisticated methods to target people looking for good deals. More than half (53%) of the crimes related to the sale of airline tickets, with scammers particularly targeting people visiting family and friends in Africa and the Indian subcontinent. One in four cases involved accommodation, such as payments to stay in upmarket villas which are either fictitious or are being offered without the owner's knowledge. Spain and France were among the destinations that were most commonly affected. Before you click to confirm payment, see the top tips from ABTA, Action Fraud and Get Safe Online on the right. We can also greatly reduce the risk of burglary whilst away; a dark home in the evenings and uncollected mail is a sign to burglars that no one is home.
