Running on courage Local girl Rebekah Cheshire is to take part in a 5k Fun Run on Sunday 14 June to raise money for MAGPAS. Back in 1994, when she was just 2 years old, Rebekah was involved in a horrific car accident and sustained a very serious head injury. Early prognosis was very grim and Rebekah was not expected to survive. On the day she was treated by two local GPs under the MAGPAS charity. This charity provides emergency medical care at the site of accidents and has evolved since 1994 to include an Air Ambulance service in addition to Community Responder Groups. Rebekah is now 23 and has beaten all expectations and leads a relatively independent life. Despite her disabilities, she is very keen to give back to the charity which saved her life. Previous fund-raising efforts purchased kit which went on to save Rebekah’s life, so Rebekah would now like to raise money to buy more kit and potentially save more lives. It would be fantastic if any members of the local community could come along to Stanwick Lakes on the day to support Rebekah and cheer her along. Twinning Success Visitors from St Christol had a ‘fantastic’ time visiting Stilton. Stilton Twinning Association hosted, for the 18th exchange visit, 33 visitors from St Christol, aged from 6 to 66 years. There was a full programme including visits to Sandringham, Peterborough, and the Cathedral and museum, the Norman Cross historic site, Greenwich Park, The National Maritime Museum and the Cutty Sark. Young people also went to the Peterborough climbing wall and bowling. Local families hosted the visitors and time with host families was an important part of the programme. A welcome meal was held at The Bell Inn and a farewell buffet at The Angel Spice Restaurant. Gifts were exchanged. Stilton received a mosaic picture depicting symbols of the St Christol area, an olive branch, Camargue Bull, and the Pyramid monument in St Christol. The visitors were presented with a handmade writing box designed and made by Andy Dann. The whole visit was described as ‘fantastic’ by several taking part. Long standing friendships were continued and new friendships formed. Some returned for the umpteenth visit, including two couples who came on the first exchange visit 18 years ago! Stilton Twinning Association was delighted to welcome the new Mayor of St Christol M. Jean-Charle Benezet. Villagers have been invited to St Christol in 2016 and plans are underway for the celebrations to mark 20 years since the Twinning Charters were signed in 1997 and 1998. The Association would like to thank everyone who was involved and made the visit such a success.

You may not know what a responsive site is, nor why it is so important for your business, or understand its ability to generate new customers, but it is worth reading on and acting upon. A responsive website has the ability to reformat itself (text size, image size and element layouts) based on what device the user is viewing the website on. For example, a normal website that is not responsive, would look fine on a desktop computer screen, but then if it was viewed on a smart phone or tablet it would be hard, or near impossible, to navigate and read the content. This is where responsive website design comes into play. When viewed on a smart phone or tablet the website would be displayed in a format that made the navigation and reading of content much easier without having to fumble around trying to zoom in and clicking on tiny links. Mobile devices such as phones and tablets are being used more and more to view online content. So if your business has a website that isn’t responsive, then you could be losing valuable new business as customers become frustrated when trying to view your site on their mobile phones.

New Yaxley Fire Station Last year the fire service submitted proposals to Huntingdon District Council to build a new fire station on the existing land in Main Street, Yaxley, to better accommodate the service’s modern on-call requirements.

The improved layout of the new design will better utilise the space and enable firefighters to have up-to-date amenities.

A lecture room, oﬃce, appliance bay, with space for one fire engine, and welfare facilities are included in the plans, which also feature a new training facility located at the back of the plot.

Your fire service has pledged to deliver water safety education to every school in Cambridgeshire following the tragic death of a teenage boy last summer.

Permission was granted at the end of April for temporary change of use of a unit on the Eagle Park industrial estate, Yaxley, to enable it to be used as a fire station for the duration of the reconstruction.

The Service is now implementing procedures to prepare the temporary site for crews to move in to by the autumn of this year. They will remain at this site while the new fire station is built, which is expected to be completed by autumn 2016.

Memorial Ice Hockey Match The Peterborough Predators recreational ice hockey Team are holding their annual memorial ice hockey match against Milton Keynes Rumble on 20 June at 4.15pm at the Bretton Ice Rink. Admission is by donation at the door.

Hunts FA Cup trophy After a long period without a game, both the Rovers and the Cuckoos will be looking to sign oﬀ their excellent 2014-2015 campaigns with the Hunts FA Cup trophy.

Stuart was a Yaxley lad who had been with the Predators for about a year when sadly he died in a car accident in the early hours of 20 November 2005, aged just 20, whilst returning home from watching the two teams play each other at Milton Keynes. Every year since then The Predators and Rumble have played this match and have raised money for various charities through this game. This year they are raising money for The Special Care Baby Unit at Peterborough City Hospital. There will be a raﬄe table and possibly an auction (dependent on items donated). Local Peterborough Pirates and Phantoms legend Dwayne ‘The Dog’ Newman will be the guest bench coach for the match.

The Cuckoos were in with a shout of four cups back in January, but once their epic FA Vase run ended at Erith, form suffered.

So why not come along to this fantastic event and help The Predators raise money for a very worthwhile charity.

They were knocked out of the UCL League Cup by eventual winners AFC Rushden & Diamonds, after being denied a clear last minute penalty which would have taken the tie to extra time. They fell at the semi-final of the Hinchingbrooke Cup to a resurgent Peterborough Northern Star, and after a brilliant 5th place finish in the league see this final as a way to put the icing on the season’s cake. “This is a very important game for the players and Management of this club,” Brett Whaley tells the Gazette. “But we want to give a good account of ourselves for the large number of volunteers and supporters who have backed us home and away this season. It’s much appreciated.” Overall it’s been a big season for teams all across the club with trophies at a number of age groups. This isn't lost on Whaley.

Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club By Tony Casbon, Press Officer The Club’s recent Recruitment Drive has been an overwhelming success!

Volunteers needed at charity shop

We welcome the Brinkman’s, Arthur, Dee and Lauren, the Osbourn’s, Derek and Marlene, John Uren, F Barnsdale, Trevor Stephen and the Richardsons. Their abilities range from complete novice to accomplished skips. They turned out in force for the Captain versus the President’s Match, and learned at first hand how we do things! Starting with excellent team selection by Graham and Robert, we played in sunshine, before, as is customary, tucking into a slap up tea laid on by President Joyce and Captain Bruce.

A chance meeting with Peter Leaton in the Farmers – Peter is chairman of the new club at Bretton Gate – gave me the refreshing news that the newly-created green is already bowling well, in spite of the fact that it was only seeded last July. At a time when all we seem to hear about is of threatened closures, this is very welcome news.

Our monster raﬄe with its huge number of prizes drew a cracking afternoon to its close. Proceeds from the raﬄe will be split between the Club and Cancer Research.

First news I have heard at County level is from Keith Thomas who is EBA treasurer. He played for the Eastern Counties against a very strong side from Norfolk. Winning on three rinks, they lost by just a few points overall.

There was another massive turnout for the 65th Anniversary Match. And a victory for the over 65s by one shot, 90-89s! A tribute once again to excellent team selection by Graham! Much work by many people: the cooks at the barbeque, the ladies who made the array of puddings and salads, a fantastic rendering of Happy Birthday to our club by the full ensemble, the monster raﬄe, a promise of another such party later in the season...

Second to go were John Hadley and Graham, our Chairman. Playing in the Federation two wood pairs they had an easy run and definitely look to be a formidable pair who are going places this season! Some of our Ladies have once again had the misfortune to draw each other in their first County Fixture resulting in a clash between Stella Dale playing with Ann Cooper against Judy Ford and Gill King. Judy and Gill winning after a very tight game. (See picture).

The Salvation Army charity shop in Desborough Avenue, Stanground is looking to recruit people to assist in the shop. Although no experience is necessary, till knowledge would be helpful. If you could spare a little time (3-4 hours per week) it would make a huge diﬀerence. There are many practical reasons for volunteering. This includes meeting new people, gaining new skills, improving your CV, etc. But, the contribution you make can make a huge difference in someone else's life too. The Salvation Army works with some of the most disadvantaged people in our communities, including homeless people, older people and those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction as well as tackling poverty and environmental issues. Whatever age you are, The Salvation Army has many opportunities for volunteers. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Salvation Army and it has been transforming people’s lives throughout these 150 years. The Army works tirelessly in communities across the UK and around the world to help people in terrible diﬃculties to overcome their problems, get back on their feet and stay there. Yaxley Library Rhymetime and Storytime Our popular Rhymetime event aimed at babies from 0-18 months runs every Friday during term time from 10.30-11am. Storytime, aimed at children aged 18 months to 5 years will be held on Tuesdays 2, 16 and 30 June at 10.30am.

Book and Biscuit Story Club The new afterschool story club for children aged 4-7 years continues with a Rumble in the Jungle on Tuesday 9 June. Question: I am self-employed and pay class 2 and class 4 NIC and understand that how these are paid is changing? Answer: Yes class 2 NIC is changing. Self-employed people pay class 2 NIC, usually by monthly direct debit. Where profits are low it has been possible to apply for an exception certificate, so you don’t need to pay. From 6 April 2015, all this changed. Key points are:  You no longer need to apply for an exception from paying class 2 National Insurance due to low self-employed profits. If your profits are below the Small Profit Threshold (£5,965 for 2015-16), you simply won’t be asked to pay.  Any class 2 NIC that is due will be calculated when you send in your 2015-16 tax return. It will be added to your self-assessment tax bill.  If you pay class 2 NIC, but are not in self-assessment (e.g you work full-time abroad), HMRC should contact you to make arrangements for continuing to pay class 2.

HMRC Property Let Campaign: In recent years, many people have become ‘accidental landlords’ when they have moved house and been unable to sell their previous home. Fewer than 500,000 taxpayers are registered with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) as owning a second property, yet HMRC believes that the true number of British landlords may be as high as 1.5 million. It concludes that as many as a million individuals may not be declaring their property income and gains. Following the recent success of HMRC’s property sales campaign, which ended in September 2013, the let property campaign was launched. If you have taken out a mortgage in recent years, you may be paying high rates of interest and may not be making a profit on letting your property after expenses. Whether you make a profit or loss, you need to inform HMRC of your activity and file a return. Holme WI The speaker for the month was unable to attend, so the group were unable to hear all about sign language, but at the last moment one of the member was able to step in to give a fantastic talk on the history and insight of ‘Marks and Spencer’ despite some friendly haggling from the floor. Very well done! A great evening. Some of the members also enjoyed a nice meal at the Loch Fyne restaurant last month and have lots of plans for other trips and meals throughout the coming months. The group meets at Holme village hall on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30pm, at the next meeting on 4 June, Linda Shepherd will be talking about ‘Life on an Indian Reservation’. Visitors are very welcome.

Hat Club The HAT Club met at Holmewood Hall on the second Wednesday of the month – 13 May A delightful afternoon tea was served, with lovely sandwiches and a good variety of delicious cakes. Also a good chat was had by all. Tour de Cambridgeshire 6 & 7 June - Road Closures

There may be some road closures in Yaxley, Farcet and the surrounding villages on 7 June due to the Tour of Cambridgeshire. This is a globally significant cycling event that will make its mark as part of the Cambridgeshire Tour de France legacy. So cameras at the ready, maybe it could be a front cover photo? Cambridgeshire County Council suggest the roads locally will be closed at least 1hr before the first cyclist arrives and will reopen when the last cyclist is through. I am really pleased to be able to tell you that another ordained minister will be joining us at St Peter’s in early July. Mark Fuller will be moving into Daimler Avenue with his wife, Becci, and 3-year-old daughter Josie in mid-June. Mark will be ordained in Ely Cathedral on 5 July. Mark’s focus will be getting to know people in our community and exploring creative ways of expressing faith outside of the church building. Mark will introduce himself more fully in a future issue of the Gazette. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who supported us at Green Day, our annual plant sale on 10 May. It was really good to see so many of you there – both buying plants and enjoying the refreshments. I know too that there were lots of interesting conversations during the day. Many of the people I spoke to mentioned how beautiful the church is and we will be using the proceeds from the day towards paying off the cost of redecorating the church. We were particularly delighted that a few people who came to Green Day then came to one of our Sunday services the following morning. Our services are always open to everyone. Our congregations include people of all ages and with many different interests and backgrounds. Newcomers are warmly welcomed. If you are unable to get to church please contact me and we will try to arrange transport.

Divorce costs often hit the headlines when we learn that multi-millionaires have spent huge amounts on their divorce. But in reality the ‘average’ divorce costs much less and there are ways to keep the costs down.

Dear Yaxley Gazette I happily got a new member to my family, a lovely dog. What has this to do with drugs?

Well I take her for walks morning and night, I have noticed a very worrying trend, there are a lot of teens smoking drugs (yes drugs, not just tobacco) in plain sight of all. The main area is in the recreation ground, around the football/basket ball ‘cage’ next to the Yaxley Parish council amenities centre. I have also witnessed this behaviour in the street but not to such an extent; a friend visiting from Stanground was shocked at the amount she witnessed. That takes me onto the amount of rubbish I see on my walks. The main problem areas seem to be near the lovely fields we have at both the top and bottom of Yaxley, it is such a shame as this spoils it for so many. Maybe it is time to point out these problems instead of burying our heads A concerned resident

Medical advice when travelling abroad If you are overseas and require medical assistance then please can you make contact with the local medical services nearest to you. We have had patients contact us from abroad asking for medical advice. As you can appreciate this is very diﬃcult and it is not safe to offer professional medical advice when we cannot see people. Travel Vaccinations If you’re travelling outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world. Vaccinations are available to protect you against many travelrelated infections, such as yellow fever, typhoid and hepatitis A. You don’t always need vaccinations to travel abroad. If you do, the type of travel jabs you need depends on which country you’re visiting and what you’re doing. Please ask at reception for a Travel Health questionnaire; one has to be completed for each person who is travelling. When completed, return to reception and one of our qualified Nurses, who are trained in travel health management, will contact you within three weeks to discuss what vaccinations are required. Please allow six weeks before you are due to travel, because some vaccinations need to be given well in advance to allow your body to develop immunity, and some involve multiple doses spread over several weeks.

The Patients Association Yaxley Health Centre, Patients Association was established in 1984. The Association forms a vital link and mechanism for communication

between the clinicians working at the practice and the patients who use the service. They endeavour to raise funds to purchase medical and other equipment for use by the doctors, nurses and patients. Their other main priority has always been health education with the provision of health information leaflets. In 1991 the Association decided to establish a Patients’ Library and Resource Centre, and to employ a Librarian partly funded by the Association. The committee is made up of a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and other committee members. Meetings are held every six weeks with one doctor attending. We are a registered charity. We are keen to welcome new people onto the committee or anyone who would be willing to give a little of their time in supporting the work that we do for all patients of Yaxley Group Practice. RHUBARB FAYRE

Residents who have lived in Farcet for some years may remember the traditional Rhubarb Fayres The Black Swan pub that took place in the village. Now it’s back! is also supporting the event

and has music acts performing throughout the day.

13 June

The Fayre kicks off with a parade around the village starting from the village club at 1.30pm. All residents, friends and families are invited to the Rhubarb Fayre along with all local businesses and organisations. The parade will be led by a Rhubarb King and Queen, chosen by children from the school, and the rest of the children are invited to join the parade dressed as Rhubarb princes and princesses (dressing up is optional). Local organisations will also be joining in. On the day, the best Rhubarb products will be judged, so why not enter your rhubarb cakes, puddings or wines? A prize will be given for the best costume, the best hat made of Rhubarb and also the best decorated house en route. The older children are invited to the Village Club late afternoon for films and popcorn, then following this we have the renowned band, The Feds, providing live music for the evening (free tickets are available now from the Village Club).

Following the parade there is an afternoon of entertainment lined up at Farcet Village School including stalls, games, bouncy castle, 5-a-side football, tug of war, guinea pig racing and much more.

ARMED FORCES DAY

19 & 27 June Armed Forces Day is a national event to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in the Armed Forces. It gives the nation an opportunity to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community from currently serving troops to Service families and from veterans to cadets. Following on from the success of last year’s event, we, in Peterborough, are celebrating Armed Forces Day on 19 and 27 June. On 19 June there is a concert at the Peterborough Parkway Sports and Social Club in Maskew Avenue. This concert will feature the Memphis Belles, a 1940s and 1950s female trio, and the City of Peterborough Concert Band. Doors open at 7pm. Tickets are available by calling 07905 568690 and cost £12, which includes a buffet. A raﬄe will also take place on the day. On the 27 June, there will be a series of events in the Cathedral Square/Bridge Street area of the City Centre starting at 10am. This will include a military parade and military bands, display dogs, community stalls and dances, a tea party in the Town Hall, a biker and scooter procession, musical performances and a flypast.

Every week we see and treat hundreds of animals across Huntingdonshire and this often includes a few stray pets among the ranks. Sometimes pets go wandering far from home and the kind public bring them to us concerned they’re lost or perhaps hurt. Some don’t stay long, just a quick check-over with one of our Vets to make sure they’re healthy and a short mission to find their owner. Some, however, aren’t this lucky – they might need treatment and/or we just can’t identify them. Cats are the most likely to stray. Entire (un-neutered) males venture the furthest from home as they go in search of a mate. They can wander over large areas and aside from the risk of becoming lost and disorientated they’re also more likely to be the victims of a road traﬃc accident. Entire males also have a high tendency to fight with other cats and suffer injuries as well as spread serious diseases such as Feline Leukaemia and feline ‘AIDS’ (both of which are spread through cat bites). In the last few months, six young entire males (five of them in the last month!) were among the strays brought to us and none were wearing tags or microchipped. All looked to be well loved and likely had a family somewhere, but without identification all we can do is treat them and hope their owners come looking for them. Only one has been reunited with their owner after they luckily saw him on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/cromwellvets). Nobody ever came forward for the other five. Sadly one male has died from his injuries but the other four were all nursed back

to health – two quickly found new homes and the other two are now in the care of the fantastic charities in the area and will be looking for their new homes. It might be a happy ending for these five cats, but spare a thought for the original owners of all stray pets – they have no idea what has happened to them, they must be heartbroken. So what do we advise to stop the same thing happening to you?

Microchip your pet – this quick procedure involves a small microchip being inserted under the skin of your pet and stays with your pet permanently. A quick scan by us (or any animal welfare organisation) will reveal your pet’s unique number, which is associated with your contact details on a national database. It can be done from eight weeks old, and costs as little as £9.99, for peace of mind that no matter what happens or where your pet ends up, we can find you!

S Consider a collar & tag – this provides a quick identification if you really don’t want to microchip – but remember collars can be broken or removed!

S Neuter your pet - Entire (un-neutered) pets are more likely to stray far from home and get themselves lost or in trouble. Neutering also dramatically reduces the risk of disease and eliminates the chance of unwanted litters. S Keep them in for a while if you move house – this allows them to settle with their new home before exploring outside. Your regular update from the local schools

Yaxley Infant School Summer Term at Yaxley Infant School started with a splash as Years 1 and 2 spent a day at Hunstanton as the sizzling starter to our topic ‘Ocean Commotion’. Their fun filled day included a visit to the newly revamped Sea Life Centre where many inquisitive children touched a crab and a starfish and were rewarded with a medal for their bravery. They also took part in a coastal scavenger hunt and, of course, no trip to the seaside is complete without the chance to build a sandcastle or two. We were extremely proud that not only the staff at the Sea Life Centre, but also people in the street, commented on how well the children behaved. The children came back enthused by what they learnt and used their incredible knowledge about sea creatures to write riddles about the animals they had seen. Can you solve this riddle written by Tilly?

I live under the ocean. I am as a sticky as glue. I am shaped like a bag. I spray water when I am scared. I have suckers. I have big beady eyes. I have eight tentacles. Who am I? The summer term is always a busy one in which we celebrate many achievements both in and out of school. Just this week we have been congratulating children for achievements in rugby, martial arts and ballet. Our personal development focus this term is ‘Going for Goals’ and it has been fantastic discussing the skills our children have and how they would like to get even better, setting themselves realistic goals and working towards them. Many have set themselves goals in their learning and are clearly working very hard to achieve them.

Jungle room at our Fourfields site have been busy celebrating St George’s Day by decorating biscuits and making their own flags whilst Ocean room have been focusing on transport by creating roads, race tracks, painting using cars and making pin wheel sandwiches. They have also enjoyed becoming princes and princesses, making crowns, having a tea party and exploring the gloop with cars. Over at Mainstreet they have been enjoying the sunshine and having lots of fun with Ocean room camping and toasting marshmallows, exploring the local play park by searching for insects and looking at different things that grow. Mini beasts have been using different pieces of equipment to make musical instruments and using their fine motor skills. Stretton pre-school’s Summer Fête on Sunday 28 June is expected to be a fantastic event offering fun for all the family, including a bouncy castle and slide, stalls and various games and crafts for everyone to enjoy. Have a go at guessing the name of the teddies or win on tombola or lucky dip; have your face painted like a tiger and perhaps even meet Spiderman! William de Yaxley It’s been a busy term! We have had a visit from Shirley Hall, who is the Assistant Director for Education and RE Advisor for the Diocese. She joined us for Collective Worship and then spent the remainder of the day helping us to formulate our RE curriculum for the year ahead. She spent time in classrooms and talking to the children, as well as looking at planning and displays. We found her help and support really useful and are looking forward to implementing her suggestions moving forwards.

Tempest Photographers were in school this term taking photographs of each class. The children all looked incredibly smart and well groomed in their uniforms and it is really nice to see so many Academy sweatshirts and t-shirts now being worn. We believe we are even the uniform of choice on the “dummy” in the school uniform showroom at present! We have had yet another trip to the Stibbington Centre with our Year 5 children this term. They

were able to expand their learning in relation to the rivers topic. We have certainly been blessed with lovely weather for all our school trips so far! Our School Fete will be on the 20th June. We are incorporating a theme of the 1940’s in recognition of the 70th Anniversary of World War 2. We also plan to include some of the attractions from the Yaxley Festival of past including: The Maypole Dancers, The Lord and Lady of Yaxley and the Art Competition.

Holme Village Pre-School We have had some lovely sunny days lately, which means the children have loved playing outdoors in the large sand pit, the mud kitchen and exploring the outside learning zones. Following on with our Spring theme the children have been learning about growth by planting their own seeds and bulbs and discussing what makes things grow. The children have really enjoyed

activities based around the Hungry Caterpillar, by experimenting with a variety of craft materials to create their own caterpillars and butterflies. At group time they discussed the story by talking about the range of foods the caterpillar ate, which were healthy and not, and how the caterpillar changed into a butterfly. The children’s outside project at the moment is building a

bug hotel by stacking plant pots on top of each other and then finding natural materials such as leaves to make it appealing to some potential visitors. Tri-Golf Festival at Stanground Academy a great success for nearly 300 local primary school pupils On Monday 27 April, over 280 primary pupils participated in a Tri-Golf Festival hosted by the Stanground Academy. The Year 4 pupils were able to use Tri-Golf equipment to complete a series of 10 challenges including pitching practice, putting practice and aiming at targets. In addition, there were various pitch and putt holes of varying diﬃculties to really challenge them and provide the competitive element to pitch and putt in the least amount of shots. Either as a team or individually, they had to pitch and putt using the least amount of shots while not landing in the water or bunker obstacles.

Oakdale Primary had an exciting moment as David scored a hole-in-one whilst competing and therefore winning the pitch and putt on challenge 10. Challenge two was jointly won by Gunthorpe Primary and Folksworth CofE Primary, with participants putting in three shots. Southfields Primary and Old Fletton Primary were joint winners of station six after their participants putt in two shots. Finally, station nine was jointly won by Southfields Primary after participants putted the ball in only three shots. Over 40 young leaders from the Stanground Academy were on hand to assist with small

groups participating in the challenges. They were able to ensure safety measures were followed, encourage and provide hints and tips on how to improve, while overseen by the Sports Partnership coaches. James Aldous, Primary PE Manager and organiser of this event said: “Many of the pupils had never had an opportunity to try this sport before so it was a delight to see how much the pupils improved during the morning’s activities. “Support from our local primary schools and their staff is gratefully appreciated and we hope to see them at future events.”

Fourfieds Library Bus

Fourfields Stilton C of E Primary

Children from Otter and Robin classes went on a walk around Stilton to learn about observational drawings. The children sketched some of the different flowers and plants in the village, and thought about how they’re similar and different to each other.

There is a feeling of great excitement at Fourfields at the moment. The reason? A new library for the school in the form of a converted double decker bus! Our ‘Books on Wheels’ reading bus, which has been generously donated to us by Stagecoach, is due to arrive at school soon. This will then mark the start of an exciting journey for the school as we work with the children and architects from Create Design Ltd, to transform the bus into a magical and exciting reading space. Already, the children have inspired us with their varied and imaginative ideas for the bus.

Owl Class are learning about bugs this term. The children are currently busy planning for their ‘Ugly Bug Ball’, where they’ll be inviting their grown-ups into school. The topic in Key Stage 2 this term is ‘invasion’, with the children learning about the Anglo Saxons and Vikings.

The ‘Friends of Fourfields’ are supporting the school all the way with this project and all their future fund-raising efforts will be to reach a target of £10,000 for the conversion of our bus. We are thrilled

It is sure to be many a young boy’s dream to be offered a professional football academy place. Yaxley born and bred Will Kirby (10) has received well deserved recognition and a signing from Peterborough United Academy. Will started playing for the very successful Yaxley Blue team over four years ago, managed by Seb Hayes, and has been their captain for two-and-a-half seasons. Will ended the season with Yaxley Blues on an all-time high, winning the Peterborough & District Junior Alliance Cup. Over two years ago Will was also asked to join Leicester City’s development team and has had two good years training and playing development games with them. Unbeknown to Will and his family he was being closely watched over the 2014 season by the youth coaches at our mighty Posh. The call to his Mum, Louise, came last December and he was invited to join the Posh Academy.

We were elated for him. The very idea of playing for your local team at Academy level was a real honour for Will and he’s really earned it,” says Louise. “His dedication and commitment to the game is tremendous for a ten-year-old boy.” In agreement with his school, Will also attends the Elite Player Performance Plan on day release on Fridays. developed to support players in achieving their long-term goals as gifted and talented footballers. Regular reviews take place to monitor progress in education, football and home life. Will joined Peterborough United Academy in December 2014 on an interim contract and has now signed for the 2015/2016 season. Louise also added that being part of a professional football academy can take you all over the UK at weekends and it’s great for the boys, a real eye opener and a huge opportunity. In the past six months we’ve travelled to Chelsea’s training ground, to play their academy, to MK Dons, Luton, Leyton Orient and Watford to name just a few. Will has some very exciting, but also challenging, times ahead.

Beware Romance Scams

Dating or romance fraud occurs when an individual believes they’ve met their perfect partner online – but they aren’t who they say they are. Once personal trust has been gained, they ask for money for a variety of emotive reasons. Both men and women are victims of this type of fraud, with the age group 40-65 appearing to be most affected. Fraudsters target the vulnerable, single, widowed, divorced; locating them using personal information uploaded on dating or social media sites. Contact is received from someone who shows an interest in pursuing a relationship. They may say they are working overseas (perhaps they are in the armed forces or working as an engineer/other professional). Gradually, a long-distance relationship is developed via email, instant messaging, texting and phone calls. The love interest may send their photograph and start using a pet name. Once the fraudsters are confident they have an individual’s sympathy and desire, they will share a problem they are experiencing and ask for help in the form of sending money to them (this could be to a UK address or one overseas). They may say they are desperate to come and visit, but need money to pay for travel costs as they have a problem in the country where they are working or an issue with access to funds. MoneyGrams® are one of their preferred payment methods.

Under no circumstances should money be sent, regardless of the nature of their problem.

The real truth is that this individual has been targeted by criminals, probably based overseas. The user profiles they have set up are fake and the pictures received are most likely to have simply been taken from other websites. Where the warning signs of the above described situation appear, or it just doesn’t feel right – trust personal instinct. If a stranger makes an approach via social networking sites or chat rooms and then wants to continue the communication by email or messenger – do not reply. Safeguard personal privacy through keeping personal bank account details completely confidential.

Many people are too embarrassed to report it to the Police, but I would encourage anyone who suspects they have been a victim of this type of offence to come forward as soon as possible”. If you had asked me a few months ago what was behind the Vicarage at the end of Pound Lane I would have told you that there was a scruffy overgrown area with a few trees and some dirty stagnant water. Ingrid and I called this area “the swamp” because of all the mosquitoes which live there. Now, following an initiative involving Des Watt, Reg Bingham, Kevin Gulson and the Parish Council and members of St Peter’s – huge thanks to you all – this area has been transformed. Some of the trees have been pruned, the stream and pond have been cleared, pathways have been added, plants and bulbs have been planted. Because the water is flowing again the mosquito population hasby greatly Drewdecreased! Pontikis The area is now full of light and I look forward to seeing the Spinney being developed for the enjoyment of everyone in Yaxley and beyond.

I am a man under siege. I’ve almost forgotten what it was like to be at home without being stalked and harassed. It all began on a morning like any other; ten past six in the morning and I’m staggering bleary eyed around my kitchen trying to make special porridge (porridge with raisins in) for my two boys, when there’s a knock at my door. ‘Who on Earth?!’

I thought to myself, but looking through the glass I see there’s no one there. Returning to my porridge making, there’s another knock – these are some committed pranksters getting up this early. Again, nothing. It was only by chance as I was standing in sight of the door that I found out what was going on – a blue tit was sitting on my door handle, looking through the glass at us. I stared at it and it stared back, and suddenly it began attacking the door with Hitchcockian madness and vigour, banging its head against the glass. How we all laughed at the funny bird, and almost immediately forgot about it. As we walked upstairs, I glanced out of the stairway window to better see what sort of weather we had that morning; it was a surprise to once again see the same blue tit sitting on the window frame, again staring vacantly into my house. In the bathroom I was brushing my teeth, only to see a flickering

shadow as it flew at the glass over and over again. It was almost no surprise that, as I walked out of the door to go to work it was sitting there, on the fence just staring at me. It didn’t chase me, it didn’t attack me, it didn’t even void its bowels on my car; it just sat there staring. This has now gone on every morning for two weeks. It’s no longer funny. This is one seriously determined bird, and I’m becoming slightly concerned. Either of one of two things is going to happen; it’s either going to smash through the glass and attack us in what will become known as one of the most bizarre murder/robberies in history, or I’m going to end up with blood and bird brains smeared down my window. In case it does get in and the worst should happen, if there’s no blog next month someone send an ambulance and a man with an eagle to rescue us.
