for life
Welcome to the June issue of the Yaxley Gazette. Wow! What an amazing turnout for the Yaxley Festival! It was great to see the community come together for this event. A big 'thank you' to all the sponsors, without whom the festival wouldn't happen, and the hardworking committee members who gave up endless hours to help make the festival so successful. There's more about the festival and photographs on pages 17-19. 'In June, nature begins to fulfil the promises made in May' - read more from Farmer Tom on page 21 and take a walk through Upwood Meadows with the Wildlife Trust on page 23. Our local news covers many forthcoming events, including Sawtry Festival, dates set for the 1940s weekend, Queen's 90th birthday celebrations, the Tour of Colour Cycle Race, charity events and much more! As we all work to keep our community a safe place for everyone, on page 15 you can learn more about the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme that has been introduced in Yaxley and the surrounding villages. Remember, we are always interested to hear about your achievements, help us also to raise awareness of local issues or events. This is your local, community publication, for you, by you, and we look forward to hearing from you every month. Thanks again for your continued support.

Sing for Life 2016
Tour of Colour Cycle Race The weekend of 4 and 5 June sees the return of the Tour of Cambridgeshire.
T
he event is part of a major international cycling calendar and is spread over two days. Saturday features a world record sized field in the Time Trial, where riders race against the clock at regular intervals. Roads will be closed around the Folksworth circuit but most residents will be able to get access throughout the day via either a one way system or through the use of escort motorbikes. The main event is on Sunday and will see over 8000 competitors racing in a world championship qualifier similar in format to the London Marathon. There will be an elite race at the front with some star riders and celebrities, followed by those out to raise money for charity or just to challenge themselves. This year’s charity partners are Peterborough based Sue Ryder and Cambridge based Alzheimer’s research. We are expecting tens of thousands of pounds to be raised for these important local charities. One addition this year is the Tour of Colour curtain raiser held on Friday night at Peterborough Arena where participants get to cover themselves in colour then enjoy the party afterwards. The organisers hope that local pubs, businesses and organisations follow last year’s lead and get behind the event. There were large crowds last year who enjoyed the free spectacle. Events and specific road closure information at www.tourofcambridgeshire.com
Supporting Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice Launching in June, Sing for Life 2016 will engage 40 local women in a 12-week pop-up project which will see them perform live on stage at Peterborough’s Broadway Theatre this September in a charity fundraising concert supporting Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice.
A
bsolutely no previous experience is needed, just a willingness to come along and give it a go! Jo Marriott, Senior Hospice Fundraiser at Thorpe Hall says “We’re absolutely thrilled that Sing for Life will be supporting us once again. This is a wonderful initiative to encourage people to try something new – members of Thorpe Hall staff have been involved in the past and they have enthused about the whole experience and the confidence it has given them.” Jo Cheung joined Sing for Life in 2012 and is now a member of Peterborough Voices. She reminisces “after singing a few scales I was informed I should go and join the Soprano 1 section. I had no idea what a Soprano was, but it didn’t matter, because from that point on, I
was part of something amazing! Without doubt my most memorable moment came last year when I was given the unbelievable opportunity to sing a duet in front of an audience of over 1,000 people with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. If someone had told me four years ago I’d be doing that I’d think they were nuts!” “I’ve made some great friends doing something I love and that I still find exhilarating, challenging, hard work and utterly rewarding… long may it continue!” So go on, call today, who knows where your journey will lead! Introduction sessions will be at the Broadway Theatre, Peterborough on Friday 24 June (7-9pm) and Saturday 25 June (10am-12pm).

LEGAL ADVICE
COMMUNITY NEWS
East of England Pipe Band Parental responsibility and your children As a family lawyer I am often contacted by distressed parents who are unable to reach an agreement with their former partner as to the arrangements for their children. Clients often feel they have lost the ability to be an equal parent because they are no longer living in the same home as their children. Some parents who have the children living with them, start trying to make all the decisions and control the situation regardless of what the other parents says or wants.
T
he law has tried in many ways over the years to deal with this situation and remind parents that even though they are separated they both jointly remain the parents of the children and should co-parent. The court will presume, unless it is shown to be unsafe for the child, that involvement of both parents in a child’s life will benefit their welfare long term. The court’s paramount consideration in any matter relating to a child will be the child’s welfare now and in the future. Parental responsibility means the legal rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority a parent has for the child and the child’s property. Since December 2004 all fathers automatically have parental responsibility, in addition to the mother, so long as they are married or named on the child’s birth certificate. If this does not apply to you then you can acquire parental responsibility by marrying the child’s mother; by both signing a parental responsibility agreement; or by order of the court. If you have parental responsibility you are automatically entitled to be involved in any important decisions relating to your child’s upbringing. This does not mean that you get to decide what they do on a day-to-day basis when they are with the other parent (or vice versa), but that you are automatically entitled to be involved in decisions relating to important matters such as education, medical care, religion and name changes. You are equally entitled to discuss your child’s welfare with their school and/or GP, with our without the other parent’s express agreement. If your former partner is not allowing you to be involved in decisions relating to your child’s upbringing or not allowing you to spend time with your child then you can take action to resolve this. The best way is always to try to communicate with the other parent to see if you can reach an agreement. As your child’s parents you two know better than anyone what is best for your child. However if communication has broken down and an agreement cannot be reached then a Resolution accredited lawyer may be able to assist you to negotiate an agreement fairly and amicably via correspondence and this is the best way to resolve matters so you get to spend time with your child quickly.
On 26 April, the Scots Guards presented two sets of engraved Bagpipes to Heritage Park School. The presentation was from the Scots Guards Community Fund and was carried out by Brigadier Kim Ross of the Scots Guards to Mrs HepworthLavery (headmistress). They are for use in the Piping School at Heritage Park under the tuition of Piping Instructor Tom Fleming a former member of the Scots Guards Pipes and Drums who is now with the East of England Pipe Band based at Farcet Club. A big 'thank you' to Tom and the East of England Pipe Band for your support at the Yaxley Festival.

Car park solutions at Broadway and Landsdowne Road Shopping Centres For a long time the owners of these two shopping centres have been grappling with the problems of misuse of car parking facilities.
Please join us at the 2016 Sawtry Carnival on Saturday 11 June between 12noon and 5pm. Building on last year’s Carnival success, we have again lined up some great bands along with a fantastic mixture of stalls and stands for all the family to enjoy. Where? Old School Hall, off Green End Road, Sawtry, Junction 15 off the A1 Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates: http://facebook.com/Sawtry-carnival
These car parks are private, not council owned, and are for the sole use of the shops and their customers and also of the residents of the flats. However, the car parks are often incredibly busy with few spaces available for customers as the spaces are being taken by unauthorised users from nearby premises who are not actually using the shops. Sometimes we have even found commuters using the car parks as a park & ride, catching buses into Peterborough. The net result is that the car park gets very congested and genuine shoppers are finding that it is hard to park and as a result in some cases go elsewhere to do their shopping. We are therefore working with Gemini Parking Solutions London Ltd who will be installing Automatic Number Plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, one at each entrance to the car parks. These ANPR Cameras would record all vehicles entering and leaving. Gemini will also install clear signs showing the parking terms and stating that by parking in the car parks motorists are agreeing to these terms. From 1 June 2016 vehicles will have a free period on site of 1½ hours with no return
permitted within the one hour. If this period is exceeded they will incur a charge which is the industry standard of £100, reducing to £60 if paid within 14 days. This will operate for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout the year. Gemini will administer the system and send a Notice to Owner to the registered keeper stating that the driver failed to comply with the set terms (as shown on the signs) so a parking charge will be due. The system is flexible in that (apart from shop staff and flat residents who will be exempted) people with a legitimate reason for exceeding the 1½ hours time limit will be able to have registered their vehicle registration giving them exemption for that day. This could include a customer requiring longer appointments (eg. for hairdressers, cafe), Blue Badge holders requiring extra time, workmen carrying out work at the site and delivery drivers returning within the hour. It is anticipated that these measure will free up car parking spaces for genuine customers to the shopping centre and thereby improve their visit to the centres, and, in turn, traders' profitability.

yourchurch St Peter's Church I was leading a church service recently and thinking about Jesus’ Ascension when he returned to Heaven to sit on his throne at God’s right hand from where he prays for us all. In order to illustrate my talk I needed three pairs of my shoes; some old, dirty black trainers, my slippers and my sandals. I had each of these pairs of shoes in a shoe box. As I brought each pair of shoes out of their box there were howls of laughter from the children present. I never did work out what was so funny about my shoes and when I asked the children to explain they just fell about laughing all over again! I have never pretended to be a fashion aficionado and usually choose my shoes on price and comfort rather than appearance. I don’t think my shoes are particularly dated, but perhaps I’m wrong. Anyway, it was a great chance to look at some of the newer shoes the young people were wearing. It was very apparent that shoe (and indeed every other) fashion changes over time. By contrast Jesus Christ and the Good News of the Kingdom of Heaven are the same yesterday, today and
forever. Whatever happens to fashion in shoes, whatever happens on earth and in our lives Jesus remains the same and loves all of us whatever our fashion sense might be. Part of the reason I was illustrating my talk with shoes was to remind us all that following Jesus’ Ascension we are now called to “fill his shoes” on earth and to look after those in need in our community. Part of the way the members of St Peter’s seek to fill Christ’s shoes on earth is through our Community Sunday which is on 19 June this year. Instead of having a church service we spend the Sunday doing small jobs for people around Yaxley who are unable to do the work themselves. If you know anyone who needs help, whether it’s with a car wash, a hedge trim for example then please contact us. We can be contacted at community@saintpeters.co.uk or in the evening and at weekends on 07776 226790. There is no charge for this although a cup of tea / squash is always appreciated. As always, please remember that you are all welcome at any of our services at St Peter’s, details for which are on our website.

What a difference the sunshine makes. The season started in late April in almost artic conditions but then, what a change, within a week the wind changed, the sunshine came out, the temperature soared and the bowling got better and better. The start of the season is always a busy time on the green; a lot of our players enter into county competitions and the draw for our own, internal, Yaxley competitions sees many games being played on the green. That initial burst of activity soon subsides, as it does with all knockout competitions, half the competitors get knocked out in the first round. We wish all our club players success; let’s hope we can get some more county champions. The league competitions are well under way, with some mixed results; the Yaxley Sharks, after being demoted last year, are looking good to return to the premiership. Attention is also focusing on some of our celebratory games, on:

Question If I own a property, can I assign all of the income to my children but retain the ownership of the property? The children would then pay zero income tax as the rental income is within their personal allowance. Answer You can do so, but it will not be effective for tax purposes – you will still be liable to income tax on this rental income. Even if you were to transfer the property ownership to them, as long as they are under 18 and unmarried and the income is more than £100 per year, you will still be liable to income tax on this income. This is due to the “settlements” rules.

New grant fund for Peterborough rural business Rural Peterborough communities and businesses looking to grow but needing help with funding can now apply to the Rural Peterborough and Rutland LEADER programme for financial support. Economic development company Opportunity Peterborough launched the new grant fund and support programme last November, following a successful bid to secure £1.32 million to fund and deliver support in rural Peterborough. The LEADER scheme, part of the Rural Development Programme for England, is jointly funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Farmers, growers, businesses and community groups can now apply for LEADER funding to support projects that help to grow the rural economy in their area. Grants are also available to boost tourism, by supporting cultural and heritage activities. “I would encourage any business or group to attend this event where potential applicants can learn whether they are eligible for funding and how to apply”. Steve Bowyer, Chief Executive of Opportunity Peterborough
Directors’ Liabilities and Protections Company directors in limited companies may be held personally liable for the actions of the company, including other directors, “shadow directors” and non-executive directors. Directors face many risks and liabilities that may result in penalties, fines, disqualification and imprisonment for acts and omissions not only committed by themselves, but also by others. The Companies Act 2006 lays down seven statutory duties of directors which are owed to the company and also to shareholders. Only shareholders are protected against personal loss by limited liability companies – not directors. All directors should therefore be aware of their duties and responsibilities and avoid illegal acts, acting beyond their powers and failing to use sufficient skills and care.

againstCrime Neighbourhood Watch Yaxley Neighbourhood Watch continues to gather momentum as village residents collaborate on plans to create a strong, friendly, active community where crime and anti-social behaviour are less likely to happen.
R
egular meetings are now being held with dates published both on Facebook and online at the Yaxley Neighbourhood Watch at www.yaxley.watch. Being very conscious that not everyone has access to the web, the Yaxley Gazette has kindly offered to provide our members with a regular monthly column. We also plan to publish a printed newsletter as the scheme develops. This month, we have also recruited volunteers to start a Speedwatch programme, something that has been very successful in neighbouring villages. The scheme allows the public to get actively involved in monitoring the speed of vehicles travelling through their neighbourhood. It is used in areas where speeding has been identified as a priority at quarterly neighbourhood panel meetings.
Volunteers are trained to use speed indicator devices which display vehicle speed. The registered owner of any vehicle seen exceeding the speed limit is sent an advisory letter from their local neighbourhood policing team, explaining that speeding is unacceptable to the local community. If you are interested in joining Yaxley Neighbourhood Watch or the volunteering for the Speedwatch programme, please get in with touch us via our website. Please also feel free to attend any of the meetings to voice your concerns, which are arranged with the support of Yaxley Parish Council and Hunts Cops. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who has supported the scheme to date, including Cambridgeshire Neighbourhood Watch, Yaxley Gazette and Safe Local Trades.
Next meeting: 9 June at 7.30pm in the Amenity Centre.

Police update Dear residents, Summer is now with us, so please be mindful of insecure / unlocked sheds and garages, especially with lawnmowers, bikes and tools being brought out and used now that the nice weather is here. Think about putting locks on sheds/garage and outbuildings, also ensure that current locks and security measures are suitable, additional lighting and fencing to deter would be thieves. Last month, we had some vehicles targeted and a bike taken from an insecure garage in Yaxley with one suspect being arrested. A youth graffiti artist session recently held on the Yaxley playing field was an outstanding success, with other projects and youth engagement being planned with other agencies. Regards, PC 1796 Sykes
It’s daunting enough having to make contact with a tradesman, let alone trust a stranger, to enter your home and carry out maintenance work or repairs.
Safe Local Trades supporting the work of Age UK locally
I
magine being elderly, vulnerable and in some cases, living alone, and having to make that decision. That is why Safe Local Trades is delighted to support the work of Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. We admire the charity’s hard work and all it does for the local community – which of course could be a friend or relative reading this. Over the past seven years, Safe Local Trades has raised over £33,000 for the cause, through the personal efforts of SLT director Eileen Le Voi, trade members, family and friends. One of the most recent events was the hugely successful Insane Terrain challenge, which to date has raised around £2,075. Helping to achieve that great total were Hampton brother and sister, Sarah Copland and Simon Gooch, who have raised £686 in memory of their dad, John. Sarah said: “Thanks to everyone who has donated so far. We wanted to raise funds for Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough in memory of our cherished and hugely

missed dad, John Gooch, who supported several charities including this one. Age comes to us all eventually and, for some, can be a challenge in itself. It was great for us to get involved in this fantastic event through the support of Safe Local Trades.” Would you like to join Simon and Sarah and do your bit to add to the £33,000 already raised by Safe Local Trades for the charity? Well, getting involved is just a couple of clicks away. There is still time to sign up for a 13,000ft Tandem Skydive at Sibson Airfield, which takes place on Saturday 9 July. And, if you raise £300 for charity, you will be on cloud nine at receiving a free sky dive. Why not make it a team building event and get your friends or work colleagues involved? Or, if you prefer your feet on terra firma, why not sign up for the Perkins Great Eastern Run half marathon (or fun run) on Sunday 9 October and fulfil a personal goal as well as rising to a fundraising challenge? The residents of Los Angeles, California, talk about ‘June Gloom’ when the skies become overcast, and the weather cooler. Not so here in England (and another reason not to emigrate), as in June nature begins to fulfil the promises made in May.
R
adish, raspberry, and rocket bring colour and zest to the larder, legumes are back (broad, French, mange tout, and the humble pea), and we look forward to some armchair tennis and all that goes with it. On the farm, with the crops fertilised and growing, the lambs out on the grass, and all the spring jobs done, there is a season of waiting. We can do nothing but pray for a little rain, and lots of warm, sunny weather to help the crops grow their best. With nothing we can do to impact yield, it can be a worrying time. Chinese wisdom says “If your problem has a solution then, why worry about it. If your problem has no solution, then why worry about it?” Farmers, however, are very poor at taking
this kind of advice! We take this time to look forward, to take the advice of experts, to visit other farms, trials, and demonstrations, and I’ll be travelling all over to learn about the very best recent advances. We will be investigating new crop varieties (perhaps some that can better cope with certain disease, or better outcompete weeds), we’ll be looking at different techniques for tilling the soil, and we’ll be exploring new science and investigating new ways to deal with the pressures of farming in 2016. I am particularly looking forward to visiting a Yaxley farmer who will be releasing ladybirds to combat aphids; a world first at this level. Who knew such ground-breaking science was happening right here in our parishes?
And since all this loveliness can not be heaven, I know in my heart it is June. Abba Gould Woolson The only gloom on the horizon comes in the EU referendum. Farmers are likely to be more affected than any other sector, with trade, financial support, and regulations impacted by this decision. There are certainly lots of good reasons to vote either way. Whatever the outcome, however, we’ll still be working to bring the very best of British produce to your kitchen.

NATURE
The joys of Upwood Meadow
C
June is the perfect time to visit the Wildlife Trust’s beautiful Upwood Meadows.
onsisting of three ancient meadows, the Wildlife Trust’s nature reserve at Upwood Meadows is awash with life. Designated a National Nature Reserve for its diversity of flowers, the greatest display is in Bentley meadow where medieval ridge-and-furrow and plentiful ant hills provide differing microhabitats for plants and invertebrates. The variety of plants including cowslip, green-winged orchid, sawwort, dropwort, sulphur clover and Dyer's greenweed provide summer-long colour and nectar sources for bees and butterflies. Meanwhile, the surrounding mature hedgerows and veteran trees provide nesting habitats for many birds, including turtle dove, blackcap and whitethroat and food for winter visitors such as fieldfare and redwing. Dew ponds dug in each field
originally for watering livestock, are now breeding grounds for great crested newts, dragonflies and damselflies. Dyer’s greenweed is a low-lying member of the pea family; as its name suggests, this flower has been used to make yellow dye since ancient times and combined with woad produces a superb green hue. And the green winged orchid has a jester-like motley of green and purple flowers giving this orchid its scientific name: morio, meaning 'fool'. It can sometimes be confused with the early-purple orchid but does not have spots on its leaves, the orchids should still be visible June. This very special place is also a designated Coronation Meadow ; a scheme set up to mark the Queens’s 60th anniversary, one meadow chosen for each county in England.

Holme Pre-school We have been very privileged to be looking after some caterpillars at Holme Pre-school and they fascinate the children. They have been spending time observing the changes and the clever children are using descriptive words like spikey and wiggly for how they look. This has led us to explore the story The Hungry Caterpillar, creating a display board to show what we have learnt, identifying the food and thinking about phonic sounds of each item. It is amazing how many items are recognised and the phonic sounds children know even at this young age. Is your child planning on attending Holme C of E School in September? Our Pre-school is a great stepping-stone as we work closely with the school by introducing the transition gradually. Your child will also make friends before they start as the majority of our children naturally move on to Holme School making the giant step feel less daunting for them. Sawtry Village Academy The Sawtry Village Academy Art Exhibition has now become an annual showcase of the tremendous artwork produced by students studying GCSE, AS and A-Level Art. Principal Sarah Wilson tells us more about this year’s exhibition. "The standard of artwork this year is the highest ever, with many pieces demonstrating skill that goes well beyond the expectations of their level. From large-scale painted canvases and sculptures to finely detailed pencil drawings, why not come along and enjoy an evening viewing the wonderful range of work on show."
As the sizzling starter to the Summer Term theme of 'Curious Castles', Key Stage One set off to investigate Warwick Castle. Our journey back in time started with the trebuchet show. We learnt that one of the worst jobs of the time, was to be a runner on the wheel, particularly if they were sick in the wheel whilst they were running! You can imagine what would happen! We were amazed with how far the fireball flew through the air and agreed it was a great way of defending the castle. We had some time to examine the castle itself with a brave few tackling the mound, or motte, of the original castle- what an incredible view from the top. We certainly could see anyone who was trying to attack us from up there.
Warwick Davis, local film and television star, and long-time supporter of Sawtry Village Academy, visited the exhibition last year and commented: “I was utterly amazed at the standard and quality of work on show. It was a wonderful celebration of the creativity and imagination that young people possess, qualities that the art department at the Academy strive to bring out in all its students. The arts are such an important, yet unrecognised part of a young person’s education. Their creativity and imaginations must be allowed to develop through art and performance which will, in turn, give them the foundations to become a well-rounded, fully realised member of society in the future." The exhibition is free and is open to all on Wednesday 29 June, taking place at the Academy from 5pm-7pm. Refreshments will be provided. This year, there will also be an award for outstanding performance presented by special guests at 6pm. We hope you’ll be able to join us to celebrate our students’ achievements!
Whilst we had a rest and ate our lunch we were entertained with the bird of prey show. The beautiful birds swooped above our heads demonstrating their impressive wing span. We wondered if they would dive down and steal our sandwiches but they were more interested in their rather more gruesome looking lunch of dead mouse! Yum… The afternoon was spent exploring the rest of the castle. We found out amazing facts about the Earl of Warwick the Kingmaker, were stunned by the collection of historical artefacts in The Great Hall and got lost a few times in the ‘Horrible Histories’ Maze. We had an amazing day and were ready to head back to the coach for a well deserved snooze on the way home.

PETS
Welcome to our short series about neutering. There are many reasons we believe neutering is hugely beneficial for you and your pet. We can summarize these reasons into three sections: health, behaviour and population. In each part we will focus on one main topic. In the May edition we talked about female dogs focusing on the lifethreatening condition pyometra. Next up ...female cats.
Neutering

Part 2
T
here are health risks associated with keeping female cats entire (un-neutered), such as pyometra, mammary tumours and disease (feline 'AIDS' being the biggest risk). But the main reason we urge everyone to neuter their cats is pregnancy and unwanted litters. Did you know a female cat will come into season every three weeks? When she’s in season she’ll be very restless and 'call' for a mate. This attracts all the local tomcats to your house, when there will often be fights. She is also more likely to go wandering further afield looking for a male, increasing the risk of her getting lost, trapped somewhere or being involved in a road traffic accident. Her behaviour when in season, the males’ responses and the domestic cat's lifestyle of being 'free-range' means she’s highly likely to become pregnant. Female cats become sexually mature at around 4 months old and can have up to three litters a year with up to 6 kittens in each litter, that’s a possible 18 kittens a year you’ll have to find homes for. In 5 years, she could be responsible for 20,000 descendants! That’s a lot of cats!
26
With thousands of cats in rescue centres waiting for their forever homes, is it really right to allow your cat to have litter after litter? Irresponsible breeding not only increases the strain on rehoming charities but also the breeding female. Having litter after litter takes its toll on her body and each time there’s an increased risk of complications, which can not only be costly to treat, but in more serious cases, it could cost her life. Some people believe a cat must have season first, or even have a litter, before she can be neutered - this is a myth - there is no evidence to suggest this is beneficial for her.
We highly recommend to neuter your cat at an early age, at around 4 months old, before she can become pregnant. Remember that cats aren’t picky breeders, they will mate with their siblings or parents! Neutering female cats is called 'spaying' and requires your cat to stay at the vets for the day. She will be given a general anaesthetic and the procedure is done to remove her uterus and ovaries. Cats are very resilient, usually recovering very quickly from the operation and will be back to their old selves in no time. Kittens seem to recover even more quickly than adults.

GARDENING
Lawn care TIPS This month sisters Sarah and Jo Parish who run GreenThumb Peterborough & Oundle give their top tips on lawn care as we head into summer. The welcome flurry of bank holidays in April and May encouraged people into their gardens and we’ve been busy visiting new customers who have been despairing of all their weeds and unhealthy looking grass. If you don’t have the time or know-how to put it right, don’t worry, it’s never too late to call us in to give you a lovely healthy, weed free lawn for the summer.
What can we do to help? We’ll carry out a FREE lawn analysis to assess the condition of your lawn, the different types of weed and the ground conditions that the lawn is growing in. We’ll agree a programme of treatments to get your lawn lush and weed free, often from as little as £15 per quarter depending on the size of the lawn. Direct debit options are available too. It’s hassle free and there’s no more worrying about buying and storing fertilisers and weedkillers at home. Our technicians are all fully qualified to safely use the best products, in the right quantities, at the right time of year.
And you? A regularly well mown lawn will be healthy and will naturally discourage weeds. Never cut your lawn less than 1” and never let it get longer than 3”. This is the most common piece of advice we give to customers. Just sit back and enjoy the results!
If you’d like us to look after your lawn for you or for a FREE lawn analysis, contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028. Email peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk Yaxley Gazette | June 2016 | T: 01733 757342 | E: info@yaxleygazette.co.uk | www.yaxleygazette.co.uk

The fabulous world of Nail Art
BEAUTY
by Kate Duggan
People have been painting their nails for thousands of years. A decade ago one could only choose between a coloured polish or a French manicure. But recently nail art has taken off, with elaborate designs featuring everything from geometric patterns to miniature landscapes. Nail art ranges from simple stripes, to incredibly intricate creations, some of which can take hours to produce.
F
or the fancier designs and best results, visit a nail salon. There are plenty of stand-alone salons across the country, as well as smaller nail bars in spas, department stores and beauty salons. If you have time, patience and a steady hand however, you could try the following designs at home, particularly if you have a willing friend to help out… Monochrome - Try painting half a nail black, and the other half white, or go for a more detailed design, such as zebra print. Flags - Many countries’ flags are quite simple to recreate. You could paint each nail with the same flag, or go for a full United Nations range of designs. Flags are ideal for celebrating sporting events, such as UEFA Euro 2016 or Rugby Union. Polka dot - Paint each nail with a base colour and allow to dry before dotting on different colours. Stripes - Fun for summer, stripes can conjure up images of seaside deckchairs or Breton t-shirts. Stripes across the nail can be slightly harder to get right, so you may prefer to work from the nail bed to the tip.
All that glitters - This look is easy to create, but effective. Paint your nails with a high shine metallic polish, such as Nars’ in Milos Rich Gold. While wet, sprinkle over some fine glitter. Alternatively, choose a polish which already has added sparkle, such as L’Oreal’s Color Riche Gold Dust. Ombre - With this look you want to create a gradient of colour. Start by painting the lightest shade onto your nail and leaving it to dry. Then paint a band of the light shade onto a flat glass surface, and a darker shade above it. Altogether, the painted area on the glass should be just longer than your nail. Mix the shades together slightly where they meet. Lightly press a makeup sponge into the polish, then roll it onto your nail. Embellishments - Stick on nail gems are easy to apply, although they don’t tend to last very long! Try a line along the cuticle, or one small gem on each nail. For best results, allow plenty of time for each colour to dry, before applying the next shade, to avoid smudging. You may also want to add a clear top coat, to help your creation last longer.

Listen carefully to a friends problems, as you may be the only person they can fully trust, just try not to be judgemental.

Long distance travel plans could finally become reality by mid-month, check you have all the necessary documents in order to proceed.

Unfortunately, due to the whims of publishing deadlines I have had to submit this the weekend before the Yaxley Festival. This means that I am unable to write about how the weather was roasting, freezing or biblical, whether a misjudged SlipKnot cover tarnished the Sunday morning performance on the music stage, or whether Spar actually managed to open in time (five months late).
Don’t waste time on people who have nothing better to do than name call and stir up problems. By choosing carefully who you associate with, new doors of opportunities will suddenly become available to you. Relationships take centre stage from the 15th, be true to yourself about who and what you want in your life, there’s no room for error.
Instead then, rather than write about events that have happened for you and not for me, I shall talk about motorcyclists. A few days ago (ages ago for you) I was driving home from Tesco, and as I went round the roundabout to head back towards Yaxley a motorcyclist decided to undertake me, swing in front of me, then flip me off as they roared off Gemini May 22-June 22 down the road. Scorpio October 24-November 22 Be patient. An uneasy atmosphere makes it hard to concentrate. You are restless and eager for changes that just aren’t happening as fast as you’d like. Get your facts in order before you make any decisions. Avoid pressurising a family member they have plenty to juggle with as it stands, be supportive and constructive.
Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Flexibility and adaptability are essential this month, shake off you rigid routines and expectations in order for new doors to open and happiness to flourish. Moving? Do you research throughly and embrace the changes ahead of you; if you stay stuck in a rut, nothing will change. A family members health could be of concern, make contact with them.
Capricorn December 22-January 20 Maintain a low profile and give yourself some quiet time in which to recharge your batteries. You’ve been through a lot recently, and this is a period to be reflective and question some recent decisions you made. Pay attention to finances, as a bill could be inaccurate. Avoid over committing until after the 20th.

Creative work will require more details and you’ll need to go that extra mile. Relationships may prove confusing mid-month, speak as you find, as cryptic messages will not be helpful.
