BLOG by Drew Pontikis
So it’s now March and traditionally all new year’s resolutions have been abandoned for two and a half months. Not me though – I’m a stayer. I’m seeing mine through to the end. My resolution is that over the course of this year, I am going to do 10,000 sit ups. That may sound a lot, but when you break it down it isn’t too bad. Pay attention maths fans; 10,000 divided by 365 works out to be 27.39. Rule out Christmas, birthday, and the odd night here and there where after serious curry binging, sit ups are just a bit too risky, and we’ll call it 30 sit ups a day. Doesn’t sound too bad really does it? And at the end of the year, I’m going to look like Cristiano Ronaldo with abs you could grate cheese on. The thing is, it hasn’t started all that well. At the time of writing, I should have just cleared 1,200. I haven’t. I haven’t, quite a lot. So far, I’ve managed 50. That’s pretty much one a day. The trouble is, it’s really hard to find somewhere to go and do press ups. I mean, yes, I could go to the
gym, but really I’m not going to go the gym to do thirty press ups. I thought what I’d probably do is wait until everyone’s in bed (obviously I can’t do it while everyone’s up; the kids will sit on me and the wife will laugh) and do it in the living room. So, every night, at about half past eleven, I find myself with a dilemma; do I do thirty press ups, or do I just go to sleep? I’ll be honest, most of the time I just go to sleep. I don’t even bother to lie to myself that I’ll do it in the morning, as up until about 10.30am I’m an occasional pulse away from being clinically dead. Give up? Not me. I’ve budgeted for a lack of enthusiasm whilst I get into it and I reckon that if, for the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, I do a thousand a night, I can catch up.
Yaxley WI Our speaker recently was Phil Hayes, who stood in for the booked speaker who had unfortunately succumbed to a winter 'bug', and he spoke about the work of MAGPAS. Magpas Air Ambulance brings crucial lifesaving care by land and air to patients in life-threatening emergencies in the East of England and beyond. Some of the UK’s expert doctors and paramedics volunteer their own time to work with Magpas Air Ambulance. They support the ambulance service and give advanced medical care when time is of the essence. Phil spoke movingly about the help he received when he broke his neck in a car accident. At first he didn't realise the seriousness of the situation, but when he did, he was able to ask not to be moved (he was hanging upside down) until medical help arrived. Later Phil had an operation in which there was a chance he would not survive, and althlough thankfully, he did pull through, he still has physiotherapy as he lacks strength in his arms.
Despite the subject being serious he spoke with much humour about his situation. Phil now does a lot of fund raising for MAGPAS and members were pleased to make donations and to purchase small items he had brought with him. After our speaker we had a cake auction with a lovely array of bought and home made produce. Our auctioneers were Deborah Seaton and Joyce Heathcote who did a sterling job in ensuring everything was sold! Our speaker on 9 March will be Karen Bramall from the Cheese Cellar at Stamford so we look forward to a tasty evening! We meet as usual at the Lancaster Club, Main Street, Yaxley, upstairs room at 7.30. Visitors very welcome.
Bluebell Farm
Bluebell Farm is based in Farcet and has secured a financial boost to kick-start its expansion plans from the Rural Peterborough and Rutland LEADER programme. It was awarded £41,794 to help expand and diversify its operations with a new farm shop, café, and outdoor activity and education centre. Lynn Briggs said: “The funding will allow us to provide the facilities to enhance our visitors’ experience. The additional resources will also support educational visits from local schools, allowing children to experience life on a working farm and to learn about food, farming and the environment.” The Rural Peterborough and Rutland LEADER programme has £1 million of funding available for local projects that develop the economies of the rural Peterborough and Rutland areas. Steve Bowyer,
chief executive at Opportunity Peterborough, said: “We’re delighted to be delivering this programme with a great range of partners. “ The programme will help drive further growth in our rural businesses and communities and support emerging companies to develop their ideas. “This type of grant supports worthwhile projects, creating jobs and supporting the local economy. “We would actively encourage any local rural business or community with a great idea or project to come and talk to us. “The funding is available and we will support applicants throughout the process.

Gemma’s Hearts update We are pleased to announce that our new website is now up and running. Please come and take a look at gemmashearts.info. Thank you everyone for your continued support. We would like to thank Ken Girving for allowing us to install a defibrillator on his building which is situated at 90 Peterborough Road, Farcet PE7 3BN. This defibrillator is now rescue ready and is in the process of being registered with the ambulance service. We have a defibrillator station waiting to be installed at Farcet cemetery on Peterborough Road but we cannot yet confirm the date for this. We can, however, confirm that we have been successful with a grant from The British Heart Foundation and have been awarded a full defibrillator station for Yaxley. The location will be announced soon. We are currently liaising with Hampton Parish Council to see if
they are able to help with our ongoing fundraising. Can you help us? We looking for volunteers on 3 and 4 June. We are excited to announce Tour of Cambridgeshire have asked us to man the feeding station as we did a good job last year. This year, volunteers will earn £50 per day which can be donated to Gemma’s Hearts for their chosen place - either Farcet, Hampton or Yaxley’s - fund. Volunteers are needed on 3 June at The East of England Showground and those who want to help at the feeding station will be needed on 4June. So far we have 6 volunteers for Farcet and one volunteer for Yaxley, so we welcome more.

Yaxley Methodist Chapel
What’s our purpose?
What would Jesus do?
I wonder if you’ve ever asked this question? Perhaps something has happened in your life which has caused you to ponder if there is any deeper meaning to it all. Maybe you’ve seen or read something which has challenged your perspective on life? Or it could be that you’ve simply sat with some friends over a coffee and found yourself contemplating such questions as who are we? What’s our purpose? What is the point of it all? Many of you will know Bear Grylls from his TV shows such as Man vs Wild and The Island in which he pushes himself, and others, to the limits of physical endurance. There are few who know more about adventure, danger, exploration and risk. Bear might be a nature and survival expert, a former reservist in the SAS who has climbed Everest and navigated his way over the Himalayas, but it’s his journey of faith which he describes as his ‘greatest adventure’. He recognises that it has not always been easy, that there have been ups and down, but
that his Christian faith ‘has brought light to a dark path, warmth to a cold mountain and strength to a failing body’. From Friday 10th March, St Peter’s Church will be hosting an Alpha course running for nine Friday evenings. Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith. Starting with refreshments at 7.30pm, each session will take a different question to do with Christianity and feature an engaging talk to inspire conversation. Alpha is open to all and will provide a safe space to consider life from a Christian perspective, to ask questions about God and to meet with other people on a similar journey in a relaxed and friendly environment. If you are interested in finding out more about Alpha, or indeed anything else at St Peter’s Church, do visit our website. Alternatively contact Jon Randall at the contact details below or Mark Fuller at markfuller@saintpeters.co.uk.

St Mary’s Church St Marys Church, Farcet, will be holding a coffee morning on Saturday 25 March 10am - 12 noon. Everyone is welcome. www.stangroundcofechurches.co.uk
What can we do to help others less fortunate than ourselves ? Would something cost us very little yet bring a little hope to someone? Jesus said ‘whatever we do for others we do it for him’. (Matthew 25 (v35-40) Do something for someone else and spread a little light in the world. If we all found a little time in our busy lives to think about this, could we make a difference in other people's lives? There are so many bad and scary things in the news that we might wonder ‘what on earth can we do?’, but every little thing someone does for someone else is a start, a beginning. Specsavers have been asking people to make a small donation of food for local food banks over the winter, not just in England, but in Spain too. Their publicity recently suggested that people give to food banks rather than spend money on overpriced chocolates and flowers on Valentine’s Day, and people have been responding so generously. We still collect for the food bank in the Chapel. Any non perishable donations can be left at our coffee morning or on Sunday mornings.
There has been a lot of negative press about the homeless lately but the successful outcomes of the night shelters in our local churches in Peterborough show that with the right kind of help and support many have been housed and some have found work. I read recently about a lady in her 80s living alone. She offered a student, in her early 20s, a room in her house for a small rent. They have learnt new skills from each other. No longer is the lady lonely, the girl has a roof over her head and they both enjoy the companionship. We may not be able to offer a room but we can offer friendship and companionship to those who feel lonely. If we all found a little time in our busy lives we could make a difference! Our Sunday Service and Junior Church start at 10.30am every week. Everyone is welcome. Coffee Morning is on the 11 March starting at 10am. Come and join us for an hour of friendship and companionship.

Yaxley firefighters’ charity fundraiser Yaxley on-call firefighters presented three charities with the money raised from their Christmas fundraiser and heard from two of the charities about how the money will be spent.
I
n December, Yaxley hosted Father Christmas on their annual Yuletide Road for the 44th year. Each year, the station has managed to raise more money than the previous year – this time raising a grand total of £5,175. Firefighters gathered at the station last night (Thurs) to present the cheques to MacMillan Cancer Support, The Fire Fighters Charity and Yaxley Scouts and Guides. Event organiser, Crew Commander Jamie Bovington, from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The support and encouragement we get from the local community is amazing and it’s because of this we have managed to raise more money each year. “It has been really nice to hear from two of the charities we have donated to, to find out how the money is spent. We will continue to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity as well as local causes close to our heart.” Wholetime firefighter Matt Johnson received the cheque on behalf of The Fire Fighters Charity. Receiving a cheque on behalf of MacMillan Cancer Support,
Regional Fundraising Manager Jessica Levin said: “Thank you so much. I know you all have really busy lives so to do this is amazing. “There are over 900 people a year in the Peterborough area diagnosed with cancer and MacMillan are there to support those people and their families. A lot of people see us as a national charity but all our services are local so the money the firefighters raised will help us fund a MacMillan Nurse for just under two weeks.” Kevin Farrant, Group Scout Leader for Yaxley Scouts and Guides, said: “Our old building got burnt down five years ago and we are still in the process of finishing our new building off inside. Everything we do is all done on fundraising so any additional money is fantastic for the group. We will use this money for the flooring and decorating.” Watch Commander John Cox thanked everyone involved in fundraising, including retired firefighters as well as current firefighters and their family members who helped with collections and counting pennies at the end of each night.
To find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter, please visit the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service website or see advert to the left.

Allotments Please be aware that we have a few plots that are available. Should anyone be interested in growing their own fruit and vegetables please contact the Clerk for information.
Cemetery Following a safety inspection, notices have been attached to the few headstones that have been identified as at risk. Where we have up to date information we have
contacted the families to make them aware, but as most are over 30 years old and we do not have up to date information we ask families to contact their undertakers where necessary to make the headstone safe. If we are unable to find next of kin, we must make the headstone safe which may include laying it down with its inscription facing upwards We will be coming to the grass cutting season very soon and would remind people to keep the grass around sanctums clear. Any flowers etc. can be placed on the gravel behind the sanctums.

Singing with localwildlife
nightingales The Wildlife Trust have some very special evenings on spring’s horizon at Cambridgeshire’s Grafham Water . . . in collaboration with folk singer and nature lover Sam Lee. The Trust are hosting unique evening events Singing with Nightingales at Grafham nature reserve, starting from Easter every weekend through until mid-May. These events will be a celebration of nightingales and their exquisite melodious song: a series of musicians will commune with the birds deep in the woods after dark. The audience will meet round the camp fire for harmony with singers and musicians, have some delicious campfire food, hear information on the habitat and life of nightingales – then venture into the woods for a special close encounter.
The events are also a way of highlighting the worrying decline in nightingale numbers – and will reflect the important work which goes into creating perfect habitat for the birds at Grafham – to which the birds return every year from their overwintering grounds in sub-saharan Africa – Senegal, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and the Gambia. The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) carry out an annual tagging project at Grafham using tiny geolocator tags which feed data back from the route which the birds take on their long migrational journeys.

50 day
Challenge
I
deally, Heart Research UK want you to give up something unhealthy, or take up something healthy, for the duration of the challenge. 50 days may seem like a long time, but that's why they are doing it, after all, it wouldn't be a challenge if it was easy. How about giving up chocolate, alcohol, takeaways or smoking? Or, on the other side of the coin, why not take up running, swimming or cycling. Some people, already signed up, are giving up refined sugar, taking up cycling to work and one person is even giving up using any transport for 50 days; he is walking to work, cycling to the gym and jogging to the shops!
goodsport Help mark Heart Research UK’s 50th anniversary this year and join them in taking up a 50 Day Challenge. They are calling for willing members of the public to either give up or take up something for 50 days.
The opportunities and ideas are endless and what’s great about this challenge is it can be tailored to suit your own vices. Creativity and personal experience is very much encouraged. Heart Research UK just ask that in support of their work, you raise money throughout your #50DayChallenge. They will provide you with a fundraising pack and any money you raise will be spent on benefiting people in your area. Heart Research UK has paid for £22.6million of medical research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease across the country. Your support will help them carry on this work through 2017 and beyond.
Here’s the good news ... ... and why we feel it’s worth celebrating being fabulous at 50! In the last 50 years, the
annual number of UK deaths from CVD has more than halved 50 years ago, more than 70% of heart attacks in the UK ended in death. Now at least 70% of people survive In the 1960s, 80% of babies born in the UK with a heart defect did not survive to their first birthday and today around 80% survive into adulthood

Change at the top for Leading Drove
Yaxley FC would like to announce the following changes to the structure of the club’s management committee. Gary Warman has stepped down from the position of chairman. Malcolm Clements has taken up the reins and has shared the following message with the club. “I am pleased to have been considered for the position of Chairman of Yaxley FC. It is not something that I had thought too much about in my early times with the club. Originally, looking from the outside in, I soon realised that this was a club that was ambitious, and also had the abilities to fulfil the ambition. It was clear pre-Xmas that
Jeff was not in a position to carry the club forward with the drive and determination that he has given it over the years, so this is where we are today. I hope that everybody associated with Yaxley FC is willing to assist me and our clubs dream of making the club bigger and better over the next few seasons. The next few weeks will hopefully be exciting as we start to talk about ideas for the future. Let the future begin and let the future be blue. Up the Cuckoos.”
“To everyone who supports and helps the club in any way, please embrace the future. Perhaps the best message is simply that its business as usual and here’s to a bigger, brighter and successful club.”
Yaks draw FIRST EVER MATCH
Yaxley Yaks gave a good account of themselves in their first ever match on the last weekend of January. The Yaks who only formed in August played renowned local and national side Peterborough Touch Rugby in a friendly that involved the visitors delivering some coaching and training before the game. Harry Burgess (pictured scoring that historic try) was the hero scoring twice in the first half including the first ever Yaks try. With their wealth of experience and quality, Peterborough came back really strongly and let 4-3 before a late Yaks score ensured the draw. The club issued a souvenir programme for the first match and will be looking to enrol in
tournaments and bring more friendly matches to the village soon. Head Coach Andrew Burgess was beaming after the match, and not just about the unexpected result. As well as the match there was 20 players of all ages training and lots of families there enjoying the fun with a cuppa. “We have lots of juniors training” said Burgess “which is great for the future of the club. We do still want to encourage as many people as possible down and a few more adults would be good. So please don’t be shy or think, it’s not for me. We would love to see you down at the ground on a Saturday”.
Training is 0900 at Yaxley FC and costs £2. That includes coaching and fitness drills as part of the clubs “Family, Fitness and Fun” programme.

Rotary Club of Peterborough Ortons
Bowls club The winter season sees no bowling, but it doesn’t stop our groundsman making sure everything at and around the green is in tip-top condition for the forthcoming season. This year the raised footpaths around the green that adjoin the Farmers had to have major repairs to avoid any potential accidents. As a club we are also looking at ways we may get mains electricity connected to the clubhouse, this looks like being an expensive undertaking, for a small club, so if there are any benevolent sponsors out there we would be delighted to hear from you. The bowls green looks superb and we all can’t wait to be playing again. Bowlers old and new take note, the green will be open on Friday 14th April, with a our first friendly club game, the President’s team v Captain’s team on Sat 22 April, this always proves a fun day.
What do you know about Rotary? Did you know that there’s a Rotary Club in the Ortons? We meet every Monday, and although there are just 20 members, we do our best to help in our community: and we include Yaxley, with some of our members coming from here. Here are a few things we do locally…
Getting together as a club to celebrate success is always a good way to begin a new year and get the members motivated for the start of the season ahead. As we did last year, we will be holding our 2016 dinner and presentation night, at the Yaxley Football Club, Friday 3 March 6:30 for 7pm - £14 per ticket. Tickets are now on sale; contact Gill King (tel: 01733 240234). We all welcome our new club President for 2017, Mrs. Gill King, (pictured), Gill a very keen bowler, regularly plays in the Over 60’s, midweek and weekend leagues. We wish her every success for the year ahead.
We offer a warm welcome to any new members, if you are interested in joining us, why not phone our club Secretary Kathy Browning (T: 01733 241967), for a chat on how you can become involved.
Together with other local Rotary Clubs (there are 4 in the city) we have bought equipment for Sailability for disabled sailors, which operates in Ferry Meadows, and members help on 2 sailing days a week. It’s worth taking a look at the sailing lake when Sailability is under way – it’s a joyful thing to see. We also support Kids Out by providing coach transport and a picnic lunch for the disadvantaged or disabled children who enjoy this free day out. We helped pasy for a hoist for the Little Miracles charity in Peterborough. We help students approaching the end of their school education with Mock Interviews to prepare them for the world of work by liaising with Nene Park academy and organising the event. We are holding a pilot event at Hampton School, and we hope this will become one of the things we can offer that school too. Each year we aim to identify and pay for a local disabled person to
go to Calvert Trust, an adventure holiday centre in the Lake District, which always provides a life-changing experience, and also a young person who would benefit from attending the week-long Rotary Young Leadership Award course at Grafham Water. There are also Youth Competitions – young chef, youth speaks, young designer for example. We don’t forget the older members of the community: we provide a summer barbecue and a Christmas meal for residents at Stephenson Court. There’s a lot to do: I haven’t mentioned the international charities we also support, for example, but those must wait for another occasion. We hope you approve of what we do, and our message is: would you like to help our voluntary efforts? We would be delighted to hear from you. In addition, if you know of a local effort which might like our help, please tell us.

Yaxley Festival
yaxleyfestival
With under three months to go, everyone is working hard behind the scenes to make this, once again, the greatest free community festival in the whole of the UK
P
Alec Pickles - Chairman 2017
eople think that the hard work’s done over the festival weekend, when in fact 95% of the work to make the festival run smoothly happens between now and 12 May, with the weekend being the celebration of how our community has yet again come together. Not that we get the weekend to relax and enjoy the music. This year is going to be the biggest festival yet with more music than ever before covering a mixture of genres from schools and groups
to a 12-piece brass band and the staple of the festival, local rock and pop bands. A major new feature this year is the Community Marquee. This will provide us all with those feelings from days gone by, with cake bake competitions, cooking demonstrations from Chef James, a photography competition judged by Marc Wheatley, flower arranging demonstrations and so much more. For the first time this year we have partnered with a local charity to further extend our commitment
to our community. LPUK (Little People UK) is a charity co-founded by Sammy Davis and our very own patron Warwick Davis. LPUK provides support and information to people of short stature and their families. They are dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with dwarfism while celebrating with great pride, little people’s contribution to social diversity. Of course, none of this could happen without the amazing volunteers who spend the weekend
working with us for you. From helping to setup on the Wednesday and Thursday, assisting visitors over the weekend or the band of litter pickers on Monday who help us return the field to its pre festival state. If you would like to find out more about what is going on at the festival or would like to volunteer some time over the weekend, contact me via the Yaxley Gazette Facebook page or through the Yaxley Gazette.
Keep your eyes peeled for further announcements regarding the Yaxley Festival 2017
Yaxley Festival
Community Zone Calling all budding gardeners, bakers, florists, makers, photographers - young and old within the community ...
YaxFest needs you! Suzanne Delegate and Julie Howe (Community Zone organisers) For the first time this year YaxFest will play host to a dedicated Community Zone; a place where we can show off the local arts/ crafts/cookery/photographic/ gardening talent within the community. Over the two days the Community Zone will feature YaxFest Bake Off, an Amateur Photography Competition, Floristry & Cookery Competitions and demonstrations and an Arts/ Crafts/Textiles showcase. We will also be calling on the local school children to design a cottage tray garden. Over the next couple of months, we will be calling on everyone to get involved... however, if you belong to a local club or group that would like to
show your work on the Sunday then do please get in touch via our dedicated email community@yaxleyfestival.info If you would like any further information or would like to know how you could get involved in this initiative, then get in touch. We look forward to welcoming you at YaxFest ComZone 2017.

What ’s in a name?
The Proby and Carysfort Connection As you’ve passed through the village on your daily business have you ever paused to ponder the origins of the places and thoroughfares that intersect and escape from the upper (Broadway) and lower (Main Street) arteries of the parish? Yaxley’s road names offer some interesting clues about the history of the village, both the extant streets, the roads and lanes that been lost to antiquity and those that have been rechristened. John Joshua Proby
P
ound Lane for example (next to the Church) was the location of the village pound or pinfold where the Lord of the Manor held stray animals, which would be released to the owner on payment of a fine or levy. The name of the Waitelands, Mustard Seed Close and Chapel End all have stories to tell, which we will explore at another time. For now let us turn our attention to Proby and Carysfort Close, the attractive cul-de-sacs that are located near Manor Farm and
Granville Leveson Proby accessible from Dovecote Lane and Church Street. These street names are inextricably linked with Yaxley’s history, paying homage to a family who bestrode village life for over four centuries. The year 1601 is notable for witnessing the spectre of a famine in Russia that would kill two million people, the probable first public performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and for marking the beginning of the 400-year Gregorian leap-year cycle within which digital files first existed. It was also the year that Queen Elizabeth I of England would not only defeat the rebellion of Robert
by Stewart Howe Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, but also grant the lease of Yaxley’s Manor (at the heart of which was the Burysted) to Peter Proby for 60 years. After the cataclysm of the reformation some sixty years earlier, the manor had passed from Thorney Abbey to the crown and had been lorded over by Robert Payne and Edward Emery. Now it was in the hands of the first Proby, whose familial procession through village history would begin and end at the site of the Burysted. Despite the manor being inherited by James I, gifted to Queen Anne and upon her death, Charles, Prince of Wales (see the paintings in St Peter’s) and then sold to the City of London, it would by 1632 be in full ownership of HeneageProby (16001652) who in 1625 had succeeded his father, Sir Peter Proby, as lessor of the Burysted. Following the restoration of the English monarchy, Sir Thomas Proby, 1st Baronet and Member of Parliament for Amersham married Frances Cotton of Conington.
Armorial Bookplate of William Proby
The love match was devised by HeneageProby, Lord of the Manor of Yaxley and Sir Thomas Cotton, 2nd Baronet of Conington, who not only united two powerful families but also allowed the Probys to acquire Elton Manor. Elton Hall, from 1663 would regarded as the principle seat of the Proby family. The subsequent marriage of Thomas Proby’s son John to Jane, daughter of Richard Cust, would further solidify the dynastic clout by establishing ties to the Manor of Farcet and beyond. In a glittering career, John (1720 –1772) would serve as Lord of the Admiralty, follow Lord Byron as Grand Master of the Premier Grand Lodge of England in 1752 and serve as MP for Huntingdonshire. By the next generation, John Joshua Proby, 2nd Baron Carysfort (1751–1828) had been created Earl of Carysfort in the Peerage of Ireland. In 1801 he was created Baron Carysfort, of the Hundred of Norman Cross in the County of Huntingdonshire, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom and claimed his seat in the British House of Lords. In exactly 200 years the Probyfamily had scaled the height of English public life, beginning with Peter Proby’s audacious climb from a clerk in London in 1587 to mayor of the same city by 1622. In 1909 William Proby, 5th Earl of Carysfort died without an heir and his title passed into history with him. The Proby name, against all odds, did however survive. Douglas James Hamilton was a British politician and soldier and the only son of Lord Claud Hamilton (1813– 1884) and his wife Lady Elizabeth Emma, second daughter of
Douglas James Proby Granville Proby, 3rd Earl of Carysfort. In 1904 he assumed by Royal license the surname of Proby. He entered the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Saffron Walden in 1910 but lost his seat in the December general election of the same year, and never returned to Parliament. He was however appointed High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire in 1923 and was a Justice of the Peace for Northamptonshire and for Hampshire. Douglas Proby died in 1931 at the family home of Elton Hall. Though the Proby lineage would continue to flourish at Elton Hall, the Yaxley connection was consigned to history. Yet to this day, the shadow of the Probys still looms large over the village. The Parish Council meet in the old boys’ school, endowed by the charity of Frances and Jane Proby and their armorial design still hangs on the chamber walls alongside the heraldry of the other other great local dynasties: Cust, Wells and Heathcote. They are gone but not forgotten.

It has been a fantastic term so far at Fourfields. Each year group has become fully immersed in their new topics, with some intriguing learning opportunities occurring across the school. The new topics are brand new areas of learning which we have not looked at before as a school. They were selected after discussions with the children about what they would be interested in learning about. We also held our yearly English week in January. The week was based around Roald Dahl and a focus on the BFG. The week was given over to activities to engage the children in learning about the famous author and his books. We were pleased to welcome Sawtry Village Academy and some year 7 pupils to the school. They led a science based session on dreams which the year 5 and 6 children thoroughly enjoyed. Fourfields also entered a local year 6 debating competition. Many of the schools in and around
Peterborough took part and our team were extremely proud to have made it as far as the semifinal stage of the competition. The topics up for debate ranged from ‘All cyclists should have a licence’ to ‘Homework is a waste of time’. It was a fantastic opportunity to take part in a new event and we would like to congratulate Farcet Primary School for making it all the way to the final.

Little acorns Stretton Pre School
We have been celebrating Chinese New Year at Little Acorns. The children have enjoyed getting messy, playing with noodles using chopsticks and dressing up in Chinese outfits. The pre-school have been learning about the different animals on the Chinese calendar. We have also tried some Chinese food for our snacks. Thank you to the parents who joined us for lunch, the children really enjoyed having their parents with them and showing them how well behaved and helpful they are at nursery. This month, we will be spending time in the garden where we have a new growing area. The children will be able to watch the different fruits and vegetables grow, and will eventually be able to pick them for their snacks and meal times. We are now taking bookings for children to start at Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori school in August. For more information please contact us on 01733 244000 or email us on littleacorns. daynursery@yahoo.co.uk
The children at Stretton Pre-School have been very busy over the last few weeks! We have been looking after our pets in our vet role-play which included a visit to the pet shop and painting pictures of our pets or pets we would like to own. We have also been great bakers! We enjoyed making pizzas for our pizza parlour, croissants and banana bread. We had fun buying cakes and bread in the role-play bakers shop! Our younger children at Fourfields have had a construction week. We have looked at the shapes of buildings and used shapes to make our own building. We had fun playing the traffic light game and making houses out of junk modelling items. Diggers through paint make great tyre tracks! We took a walk to a building site to see the real builders and diggers. One of the most fun things was having some nuts, bolts and screws frozen in ice and using tools to free them! We are looking forward to inviting mums, grandmas, aunties and sisters into the pre-school for Mother’s day in March.
Holme Pre-School The children have enjoyed the cold weather since we have returned to Pre-School. Finding ice has been a great opportunity to explore and discussions about why, where and investigating how it can change; texture, size, shape, weight and language have been a huge part of this learning journey. We had brief but first-hand experience of falling snow which encouraged the children to make their own snowflakes. The children enjoyed this activity and it utilised their fine motor skills and supported their
ability to follow simple instructions. For our younger children they had fun mark making in our pretend snow, making a variety of different shapes and lines with a range of items and their imagination. We also offer the children a chance to choose areas of focus and dinosaurs have been so popular this term we extended to different parts of play throughout the setting such as in the sand, playdough, shopping, sorting, outside and singing time – it has been great fun.
Our Y4 pupils took part in a fantastic Roman day, learning about their lives, food and drank, where they conquered and how they shaped the world we live in today. This ‘hands-on’ experience included pottery making, decorations, writing with feather quills and experiencing the formations of Roman soldiers preparing for battle! The day ended with a Roman feast including grapes, cheese and wine…well Juice! Having survived the Roman invasion, the following week brought the Vikings this time a Viking village nestled in the school hall and the Y5 children experienced a whole range of activities including weaving, pottery, candle making, ink work, rune making and even battle formations and how to fight like true Viking warriors. In the afternoon the pupils returned to the Viking village, but now in the present day as an archaeological site. They investigated by brushing through dig boxes, exploring what had happened and who lived there. Some groups uncovered bones, pottery, keys and wooden objects
providing clues as to the village inhabitants and their job. All of the resources really helped add to the authentic feeling of both days, from the shields and banners to decorations and pottery, we would like to say a huge thank you to "History off the Page" for providing such an incredible day, our parents for some inspired costumes and to those parents and everyone else involved in making this day happen! We would like to congratulate our Year 6 debate team, who made it all the way to the semifinals of the inter school debate tournament, they were just one point off making it to the final. They were a great team improving week on week, we are very proud of their spirit and enthusiasm. Thank you to Joseph, Elizabeth, Eva, Rachel, Lacey and our fabulous team captain Ava.
Yaxley Infant School We promote a safe and secure environment where every child is happy, healthy and heard. As a result we are always trying to teach our children the importance of exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Children across the school were set the challenge to take a “Healthy Selfie”. The response was great and we had pictures of children, eating well, walking the dog, martial arts and even riding horses! All of these pictures are now displayed in our hall. Thank you for all your effort. This month, Year 1 Children have been making Moon Buggies. They worked with their learning partners to design make and evaluate their vehicles. “I enjoyed it when me and Alfie made the lasers!” said Ellie. Raife said, “ I persevered to make a ship”. At Yaxley Infant School we place a great importance on ‘Reading’ and encouraging children to read regularly. Children have enjoyed using the new guided reading books the school has invested in and more and more children are receiving new books as prizes in our weekly Friday “Praise Assembly”, which is great to see. We were visited by Sue Batchelor from the Library service who explained to the children the “Read It Again”
Children’s Picture Book Award for 2017. The children have 8 books to read, discuss and they then vote for their favourite book. The award encourages children to think about what makes a good book and raise awareness of the local libraries where children can develop a love of reading. Children’s Social and Emotional wellbeing continues to be a high priority at Yaxley Infant School. This term children are learning to be confident, ask questions and work as part of a team. Working collaboratively and having an enquiring mind helps children become lifelong learners.

Farmer
I’ve been passionate for many years about sharing what happens on the other side of the farm gate and encouraging people to buy local, seasonal, best quality, British food.
F
or some time now people have been saying “we agree with this, but where are all the local, British, quality producers?” Coupled with this, here on the farm we felt we had been using our favourite hashtag - #BuyLocal - for too long without answering that earlier question, and so…(drum roll please)… on 1st March we are launching our first produce offering that you can buy directly from us here on the farm. But first, what are we going to call ourselves? Whilst our family have been farming for many, many years, and Shakespeare was right in saying ‘a rose by any other name would smell as sweet’, we want to use a name that communicates our philosophy, our principles, and our passion. And so ‘Village Farm’ was born. ‘Village’ communicates our passion for local food, our love of the people that we live and work alongside, our support for local issues and people,
and our connection to the area alongside beef, lamb, chicken, pork, all that we are, and much more is around us. ‘Farm’ is important as encompassed in ‘Village Farm’. and other staples, the following are we are a farm (unlike the ‘fake in season in March, and available Visit villagefarm.org.uk or call farm’ names from some of the locally: kale, venison, purple sprouting 07740301270 to order your big supermarkets), but also we broccoli, leeks, swede, and spring Easter lamb today. are a rustic, traditional enterprise, onions. DENTAL HYGEINE
IN YOUR PETS
Does your pet’s breath smell bad, are their gums red, inflamed or bleeding? Have they started drooling excessively? Will they only eat soft food or do they have difficulty eating? All are signs of dental problems.
A shocking 80% of pets over the age of three years old have signs of dental disease. Most commonly our pets suffer from bacterial infection and its complications (the fancy word is “periodontal disease”). It affects the gums, teeth and surrounding bone. The bacteria originates from plaque build-up. Plaque is a mixture of bacteria and proteins derived from saliva and food which naturally accumulate in the mouth where it sticks to the teeth. It can be easily removed, but after 48 hours the plaque calcifies and becomes a grey or brown hard substance called tartar (which is difficult to remove). The bacteria and tartar build up cause the gums to inflame (gingivitis) and recede, where it progresses to
infection and destruction of the tooth socket. This damage is irreversible and painful, often leading to losing the tooth. Did you know this bacteria can get into the blood stream and affect the rest of the body (including major organs)? The persistent low grade trickle of bacteria into the bloodstream from an infected mouth can exacerbate, or at least contribute to, many other illnesses such as heart disease and liver and kidney problems. So looking after our pet’s teeth is more than just avoiding bad breath! What can you do about it? In the early stages any discomfort can be reversed and damage prevented by removing the plaque. This

Tax tips - matters to consider before 5 April 2017 Owner Managed Limited Companies: The taxation of dividend income changed significantly in April 2016, so it might be tax efficient, if there is sufficient retained profits in your company, to vote a minimum dividend to shareholders of £5,000. The first £5,000 dividend paid per tax year is tax free and the remainder over this amount is taxed at 7.50% providing you are a basic rate tax payer. Also you may consider gifting shares to your spouse to take advantage of the first £5,000 of dividend income that is tax free. Use your ISA allowance: ISA’s provide a tax free environment for your savings. Have you paid the maximum into your ISA investment during the 2016/2017 tax year of £15,240 per person – if not consider topping this amount up. In addition, parents can now also fund a junior ISA. Any unused investment limit cannot be rolled forward into next year, so it will be lost. Use your personal allowance: Ensure that you are making the most of your tax-free personal allowance (PA), which is set at £11,000 for 2016/17. If your spouse or partner has little or no income, you may wish to consider transferring income (or incomeproducing assets) to them to make sure that they fully utilise their PA. However, you should take care to avoid falling foul of the settlements legislation governing ‘income shifting’, and consider the legal consequences of transfers. Certain married couples and civil partners may also be able to make use of the Marriage Allowance. This allows couples to transfer 10% of their PA to their spouse or civil partner, where neither pays tax at the higher or additional rate. The above is only a few matters you should consider, but there may be other opportunities depending upon your circumstances. More details are on our website, but professional advice on any matters should be taken as soon as possible, or talk to us.

The paper £5 note will no longer be legal tender after 5 May
D
on’t panic! Most banks, building societies and post offices will exchange these for you until the 5 May 2017. After this period, if your bank, building society or even post office decides not exchange the paper version, you can exchange the note in person with the Bank of England in London. Here’s a few security features to check the authenticity of the new note: l A clearly defined portrait of the Queen is printed on the see-through window with the words '£5 Bank of England' printed twice around the edge l The border of the window changes from purple to green when the note is tilted. This can be seen on the front and back of the note l A silver foil patch which changes from 'Five' to 'Pounds'
when the note is tilted, and a multi-coloured effect appears l A silver foil patch containing an image of the coronation crown which appears 3D. When the note is tilted a multicoloured rainbow effect can be seen l The printed lines and colours on the note are sharp, clear and free from smudges or blurred edges l When running your finger across the front of the note you can feel raised print in areas such as the words 'Bank of England' and in the bottom right corner, around the number '5' A new polymer £10 note will be issued in summer 2017, and a new polymer £20 note by 2020. The current £50 note was issued in 2011 and there are no plans to replace it in the near future.

Tough new laws for mobile use behind the wheel As tempting as it may be to send that quick text or make that short call on your mobile – it is now worth remembering more than ever, that as well as being dangerous - using your phone whilst driving could cost you dearly.
T
by Eileen Le Voi
But while it has been illegal since December 2003, research shows there has been a worrying shift in attitudes to mobile phone use behind the wheel. The RAC recently surveyed 1,714 motorists and 31% said they used a handheld phone behind the wheel compared with just 8% in 2014. The number of drivers who said they sent a message or posted on social media rose from 7% to 19%, while 14% said they had taken a photograph or video while driving. While to some it may seem acceptable to punch in those digits whilst driving, however, it has been proven that just for a couple of seconds of distraction, the consequences can be devastating.
ough new laws brought in from 1st March by police forces around the country will see those caught using their phone at the wheel facing a £200 fine and six points on their licence. If they are caught a second time, they would face a minimum six-month driving ban and would also be summoned to appear in court where they could be fined up to £1,000. We have all seen the disturbing news footage and images in the newspapers in recent weeks and months of what can happen when using a mobile phone whilst driving. These new changes will have a significant impact on young drivers in particular as they risk having their driving licence revoked following a first offence, and will require them to retake their test. Motorists will no longer be offered the opportunity to go on a driver awareness course. It is illegal to use a mobile phone, held in the hand, whilst driving or while stopped with the engine on.

Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval. Go to www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone 01733 530019

5
tips for a great lawn:
1 Go carefully on your first cut Raise the height of your first cut to just ‘top’ the grass – too low will stress the grass just when it needs encouraging. 2 Check your blade is sharp Blunt blades shred the grass and don’t give a clean cut. This may cause a brown, bruised appearance and can lead to the onset of disease. 3 Not too short … nor too long Never cut less than 25mm (1”). Mowing little and often is by far the best.
4 Lawns don’t like shade Border plants, shrubs and trees all have a habit of encroaching on the lawn and denying it light … time to get the secateurs out! 5 Get expert help from GreenThumb If you’re looking at a weedy and tired looking lawn, after a couple of visits from GreenThumb most, if not all, of your weeds will be gone and your grass will be healthy and green. Preparing your
for
outside the home From the longer daylight hours to the sound of morning birds, the signs of spring are all around us. Spring and winter are battling it out but there's plenty to do to prepare your spring garden. Here are some ways to get your garden ready for the better weather.
Clear out weeds, debris and last year's dead leaves from garden beds and loosen soil. Top Tip pulling weeds is easier while the ground is wet. l Add compost and natural fertiliser such as odorless horse manure when the soil is dry enough. l Help the compost decompose by turning it with a pitchfork every few weeks. l Remove dead flower heads from bulbs that have finished flowering so their energy is able to focus on new bulb development. l
JK SHEDS
Lift and divide large clumps of herbaceous plants. Remove the old woody stalks and add them to the compost. l Keep an eye out for aphids that like that new spring growth. Use botanical pesticide as a last resort to insect attacks. l If trees and shrubs in your garden have broken branches or "suckers" (small young branches), cut them off as close as possible to the main branches, as they zap the strength of the tree. l Use vinegar and lemon juice to remove mold and mildew from l

This treatment is usually £150 for the full face but for the winter months we are offering three full face treatments for £250. This gives you the opportunity to see just how good the results are after only a few months.
