 COMMUNITY SURGERIES UPDATES

Yaxley Group Practice

Yaxley Health Centre Patients’ Association

Thank you Another year of fundraising for the Patients' Association has gone by. With your support supplying and buying the bric-a-brac at the boot sales, also buying cards and calendars at Christmas and through the year, during 2015/16 we raised a superb £890.00. Thank you all for your help and support over the year. This will be my last year doing the boot sales as I am finding the lifting and carrying quite difficult. I shall continue to make cards etc so please get in touch and I will either visit you or accept your order over the phone. I look forward to seeing or hearing from you during the coming year. In May this year I hope to have a stall at the Yaxley Festival so come along and give us your support. Once again many thanks to Ann Copeman, Patients' Association Committee Member.

Easter Holidays The surgery will be closed on Good Friday, 25 March and Easter Monday 28 March. We will be open Saturday morning 26 March. Please ensure you have sufficient medication for that period and orders for necessary repeat prescriptions should be made as early as possible in advance.

Carer Support Group Meeting The next meeting of the Carer Support Group will be on Wednesday 2 March between 2pm-4pm in the Health Education Room. If you care for a family member or friend then you would be welcome to join our small but friendly group for coffee, biscuits and a chat. For more information, please speak to Linda in the Patients' Library. All carers will be made very welcome.

Half Day Closing The Practice will be closed on Wednesday 16 March from 1pm till 4.30pm. We are available for emergencies during that time.

No Smoking Day

Wednesday 9 March

Do you need help to stop smoking? Using our online services will allow you to make your appointments at a time suitable to you and avoid our busy phone lines, particularly on a Monday morning. This should ensure quicker access to the practice and prevent long waits on the telephone. Many patients are finding the online ordering of repeat prescriptions to be quicker and much easier than manual ordering via the practice. We have a specialist smoking cessation advisor who visits the

practice every Thursday. He can offer specialised one to one, face to face or telephone support, and can supply nicotine replacement and drug therapy on prescription. You are four times more likely to quit with help from the NHS. If you have tried already to quit but been unsuccessful please try again as help is available. From 1 October 2015 it became illegal to smoke in a vehicle with anyone under the age of 18 present.

Appointments are available on Thursdays. Please ring reception on 01733 240478 to arrange an appointment or for further information please contact Steven Tibbs, Smoking Cessation Advisor on 07908 408 743. The following website may also help you: http://smokefree.nhs.uk Help to stop smoking is available from CAMQUIT the Cambridgeshire stop smoking service. Yaxley Parish Council

Councillor Co-Option. Following the resignation of Stewart Howe and Sally Howell from the Parish Council and adverts for possible election and then co-option we were pleased to see that we had interest from 4 candidates for the posts. The following candidates were co-opted at February’s meeting James Reed and Philippa Crooke and we welcome them to the Council. Inconsiderate Parking We have had reports of poor parking causing safety concerns both for pedestrians and motorists. Issues highlighted have been illegal parking too close to road junctions and cars parked on the footpath and failing to leave adequate footway for pedestrians, pushchairs and or wheelchair users. Police have been supplied with some of the key areas and times to be patrolled. A common concern has been that of parking at schools at drop off and pick

up times, please remember the safety of not only pedestrians but other road users. Allotments With Spring around the corner, we have a number of full and half allotment plots available for rent. These cost between £30 and £40 for a full plot. Should anyone be interested in growing your own please contact the Clerk. Cemetery Following a safety inspection notices have been attached to the few headstones that have been identified as at being unsteady. Those families affected should the contact the office for further advice. Work also has commenced to make improvements to the old part of the cemetery starting with gravelling the Northern area. Potholes We are working with Cambs County Council highlighting potholes in the village with some success.

Men united in song

The new year brought an exciting new project for the awardwinning Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Men United In Song, a recruitment initiative which aims to attract new members while at the same time raising money for a very worthy – and specifically male – cause, Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in April, the project will recruit 40 local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none!) who over 12 weeks will rehearse to perform with Peterborough Male Voice Choir in a gala charity concert at the Broadway Theatre in June. Under the direction of William Prideaux - a nationally recognised authority on the male voice genre Peterborough Male Voice Choir has a track record of highly successful charity fundraising recruitment projects, to the extent that other

choirs regularly seek his expertise in following the winning formula. But it’s not all about the singing, or even about the fundraising, there’s a fantastic social scene, too - after all, not every choir can boast its own bar in its own theatre! Ultimately, it’s about a group of men getting together in a shared enterprise, which of course is the idea behind Men United, and why the charity seemed such a good fit for the project. William Prideaux says “It’s a real privilege to work with such a cracking bunch of blokes. They take their music making as seriously as their socialising. Men United In Song kicks off with introduction sessions at the Broadway Theatre on Friday 1 April (7-9pm) and Saturday 2 April (10am-1pm). Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just a willingness to get stuck in and give it a go. • Introduction sessions will be at the Broadway Theatre, Peterborough, on • Fri 1 April (7-9pm) and Sat 2 April (10am-1pm). • Rehearsals will be at the Broadway Theatre on Thur evenings from • 7.45-9.45pm, starting on Thur 7 April.

 WILDLIFE THE GREAT FEN

Meet the new Fen family!

A

If you’ve never visited the Great Fen before there’s a treat in store - the Wildlife Trust’s flagship reserve, the Great Fen is one of the most important habitat restoration projects in Europe, converted 14 square miles of farmland into natural wetland and reedbeds, encouraging the return of a myriad of wildlife – from lapwing, barn owls, short eared owls and hen harriers to otters and water voles.

nd this spring there’s a whole new Fen family to encounter – four very special personalities to meet who will serve as a guide to the fascinating species out there for real: Squadron Leader Swoop, the Marsh Harrier - Swoop likes to be in charge, he is the eyes and ears of the Great Fen and very knowledgeable. He keeps everyone in order and makes many reconnaissance sorties and reports back to base with his observations to his friends. Newton the Great Crested Newt is a very enthusiastic young chap, always ready for an adventure and never without his backpack - he loves exploring. Luna the Dragonfly is optimistic, friendly and a little shy - she

loves darting about the waterside and enjoying the sunshine, while Verity the Water Vole is quite a chatterbox, very homely and has seen plenty of changes during her lifetime. These beautifully made felted animals will help children explore the wonders of wildlife and heritage - and can all be found out in different parts of the Fen. In addition to helping children learn in a fun and interactive way, in the coming months they will feature in stories of their adventures, and guide children round exciting trails. Meet them at a two day craft fair at Great Fen’s Countryside Centre on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 March along with a range of locally made arts gifts and produce.

Beekeeping for the Beginner

Social media advice for separated couples Social media is an established part of our world and with live tweeting from Courts, the possibility of service of legal documents via Facebook message and pages of screenshots being submitted in evidence, it is having a profound influence on family law legal proceedings. A survey last year suggested that one in seven married people have considered divorcing as a result of their spouses’ activity on social media sites such as Facebook. It is not just the ‘unsocial’ aspect of communicating with screens rather than loved ones that creates problems. Much activity found on social media sites can amount to infidelity in word if not deed. Think before you post Care needs to be taken by separating couples or parents in what they post on social media especially if there are financial or children proceedings underway. Status updates or private messages can provide evidence of adultery. And all social media posts, locations and messages can be viewed by a party wanting to keep tabs on someone’s spending, raise questions about substance abuse or how children are being cared for or to prove employment or cohabitation. Whilst sometimes understandable, the temptation to vent one’s frustration at an ex- partner on social media, always creates more problems than it solves. If a party is unreasonable, an online shaming is highly unlikely to make them less so. What goes online tends to stay somewhere online and even if deleted could already have been saved for later use as evidence. Would you want your posts seen by the family court? Think before you post If things are difficult: • Think before you post - how could this cause problems or show me in a negative light? • Change your passwords – ex partners often know them • Look at privacy settings – public includes your ex • Revise followers and friend lists – people who know your ex might love to report back • Consider opening new social media accounts – especially if you had joint accounts before

Parking in Holme Parking around Holme School is often difficult but things came to a head recently when the school bus was delayed for 15 minutes due to inconsiderate parking. Vehicles are churning up the grass verges near the school and ignoring the Council signs which request them not to drive on the grass. One of the benches near the church was also recently hit

HOLME PARISH COUNCIL by a vehicle and has had to be repaired. The School Governors and Parish Councillors would like to ask everyone who brings a child to Holme School by car to please park in the village hall car park whenever possible. If you must drive right to school, please keep off the grass to give it time to recover... and mind where you park!

LOCAL UPDATES COMMUNITY 

Yaxley Methodist Chapel

St Peter's Church A few weeks ago someone knocked on our front door late at night. When I answered the door there stood a member of our congregation who had locked themselves out of their house. They were just going out for a few short minutes and had picked up the wrong key – the front door shut behind them and they were locked out. Spare key, car keys, mobile phone, wallet etc were all inside the house. After spending the night at our house the person who had been locked out and I went back to the house “armed and equipped” to break in! However, none of the equipment we had taken was up to the task and we had to call in expert locksmiths. The locksmith came out very quickly and took about three minutes to break in – their specialist equipment opened

the door very efficiently. It occurs to me that this episode has similarities to the reason God sent his Son Jesus Christ to earth – to live, to die and to rise again for the whole world. We make mistakes – some of them small ones like picking up the wrong key; others much larger and find ourselves “locked out” from God’s plan for us. Using our own devices and skills we can’t break back in. Rather, we need to call the expert - in this case the “expert” is Jesus Christ whose death and resurrection we commemorate at Easter. His death and resurrection open the door and we are able to walk back in to God’s

plan for us and his everlasting Kingdom. There are many reasons why the stone was rolled away from Jesus’ tomb. Perhaps one of these is to show all of us that we are able to walk out from whatever it is which entombs us and into God’s Kingdom. None of us need to be locked out – all are welcome through the door of the Kingdom of God and into God’s family. You would all be very welcome to join us at St Peter’s this Easter as we both commemorate the death of Jesus and celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection and the door to God’s Kingdom being opened for the whole world.

Easter Services On Good Friday our service for all ages is at 11am followed by a contemplative Hour at the Cross at 2pm. We have a traditional service of Holy Communion at 9am on Easter Sunday followed by our contemporary All Age Communion Service at 11am. You are all welcome to join us at any of these services. (Please note that the clocks go forward at 1am on Easter Sunday morning!) With my prayers and best wishes for a Happy Easter full of hope and praise and open doors, Jon Randall (Vicar) 01733 240339; vicar@saintpeters.co.uk

Chocolate, coloured eggs, cute little bunnies these are the fun things that come to mind when we think of Easter. As Christians we know this isn't all there is to Easter. Over 2000 years ago God sent his only Son, Jesus, to live a perfect life and to die for our sins! But Jesus rose from the dead. We are celebrating Jesus' death and his resurrection. Many people call Easter Resurrection Sunday because that is exactly what it is. Services Join us on Easter Sunday or any Sunday, our Services and Junior Church start at 10.30 a.m. Coffee Morning this month is on Saturday 12 March from 10am. As usual we will be selling our delicious homemade cakes and scones . Come in from the cold and warm up with a hot cup of coffee or tea and meet friends, old and new. Minister: Gareth Baron 01733 314147 - Yaxleymc@gmail.com

St Mary's Church St Mary’s Church, Farcet will be open for visitors from April right through to October every Sunday from 12 noon till 6pm and in July and August. It will also be open on Saturdays from 10am - 4pm. If you are interested in looking round at any other time, you can obtain a key to the church by ringing 07891 434729. MONEY MATTERS by Pete Bird, Bird & Laws Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Laws info@birdandlaws.co.uk and if of general interest we will publish them here.

MATTERS TO CONSIDER BEFORE 5 APRIL 2016: Owner Managed Limited Companies: The taxation of dividend income is changing significantly from April 2016 and it’s likely to impact upon the vast majority of owner managed businesses who pay themselves dividends and a small salary. The tax payable on dividend income increases on 5 April 2016 but there may be an opportunity to vote further dividend income before 5 April 2016 to reduce these increases. Also you should consider gifting shares to your spouse as the first £5,000 of dividend income from 6 April 2016 is tax free. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) allowance – use it or lose it: Every individual is entitled to an annual exemption each tax year, that means gains up to £11,100 for 2015/2016 are tax free. If you do not use this allowance, you will lose it. If you have assets you are planning to dispose of that attract CGT you should consider whether you are able to dispose part of these in this tax year and part after 5 April 2016 to reduce any tax payable. Use your ISA allowance: ISA’s provide a tax free environment for your savings. Have you paid the maximum into your ISA investment during the 2015/2016 tax year of £15,240 per person – if not consider topping this amount up. In addition, parents can now also fund a junior ISA. Any unused investment limit cannot be rolled forward into next year, so it will be lost. Maximise your pension contributions: Contributions to your personal pension attract income tax relief. The maximum contribution that may be made for 2015/2016 without incurring an income tax charge is £40,000. You may be able to make additional contributions if you have not used your allowances for the previous three tax years. Contributions must be made before 5 April 2016 if tax relief is to be claimed in 2015/2016. Seek advice from your pension advisor. The above is only a few matters you should consider, but there may be other opportunities depending upon your circumstances so you should seek advice as soon as possible, or talk to us.

At our February meeting, Mick Birchall came to give us a very enjoyable talk on how he and a team mate entered a race to row across the Atlantic. The race took them 73 days, the boat just 12ft long in 80 degree heat; it did not start well when his team mate dropped out at the last minute and he needed to find a replacement before they were ready for the off. We were informed that the best way to row the Atlantic is naked! This is because the salt rubs in with your clothes and irritates skin, so they also sat on a piece of sheepskin. The toilet was a bucket, used sitting behind his team mate who carries on rowing, and his new team mate was a woman! The views of sunsets, stars and marine life sounded outstanding. It was a great evening.

19 members attended our January meeting; numbers being depleted due to illness and the weather not being too good. Our speaker was Berenice Hardwick, a hypnotherapist, and after trying various exercises and listening to her soothing voice, we all felt very relaxed. I'm sure we will be trying some of the techniques at home. At our next meeting on 10 March we will be participating in crafts taught by one of our members, Pauline Salmon and there will also be a cake auction. Our speaker for 11 February is a female Chelsea pensioner which should be a very informative talk. If you are thinking of joining the WI or would just like to visit, why not come along to listen to this very interesting lady. Meetings held at Holme Village Meetings held at The Lancaster Hall at 7.30pm on the first Thursday of each month, for March Club, Main Street, Yaxley at 7.30pm, doors open at 7pm. this will be on the 3rd.

Hat Club

If you are over 50 years and not in work you would be very welcome to attend

18 Members of HAT Club met on Wednesday 10 February 2016 at Holme Village Hall at 2.30pm. A most entertaining and informative demonstration of dog training was given by Nancy Watson with Lanner and Sue Robinson with So-so and Katy. The three dogs were all Shetland sheep dogs and they demonstrated obedience training; including walks, sits and stays, sending aways and scent training. The dogs were so enthusiastic, amazing and obviously enjoying themselves. Members enjoyed a meal of roll and soup, with bread & butter pudding afterwards.

At the next meeting on Wednesday 9 March Alan Bowley will give a talk on Wildlife. The Committee would be very grateful if members would kindly let a member of the Committee know if they are not able to attend meetings as catering is proving difficult and a little wasteful.

Fantasy Formula One 2016

D

ue to popular demand, the St B’s Fantasy Formula One Competition is back. Over the last few years this has raised valuable funds towards the upkeep of the Hall, as well as being great fun! It is quite simple; you choose your dream team of chassis and drivers, with a notional £100 million budget, and score points throughout the season. Anyone can do it; the F1 fanatics can use their knowledge and expertise to choose, and everyone else can select their team by their names, looks, nationality - anything they like - but it does make every race interesting and exciting!

It costs £10 to enter a team for the whole season (21 races, hopeully). You can enter as many teams as you like, but no two teams are allowed to be the same. There is a £10 prize for the winner of each of the races this year, with prizes at the end to be fixed when the number of entrants is known. We have found that a bit of rivalry makes it even more exciting, so why not encourage your family, colleagues, and friends to enter too? The first F1 race this year is in Australia on 20 March, so all entries must be received and paid for by 17 March – before the practising starts.

You can find all the details and an entry form on www.saintbs.co.uk/fantasy-f1/ , or E: bookings@saintbs.co.uk

MARCH BULLETIN Did you know that being a smoker or living with someone who smokes puts you at higher risk of having a fire in your home? Throughout March we’re raising awareness of the fire risks associated with smoking and we’d like you to join in. We often find smoking is one of many factors making someone more at risk of fire, for example, when combined with poor mobility, health problems or being elderly, it increases someone’s chance of having a fire. Tips to take on board or give to friends and family who smoke:  Never leave a lit cigarette or pipe unattended.  Always use a proper ashtray and make sure the contents are cold before you tip it in the bin  Never smoke in bed and avoid smoking in a chair if you are likely to fall asleep  Most importantly, fit a working smoke alarm and test it regularly.  Don’t forget to also test the smoke alarms of those you love. If you have an elderly or vulnerable relative, friend or neighbour, pop by and make sure they have a working smoke alarm. If you think someone is vulnerable and could be at a higher risk if a fire broke out in their home, then please call us on 0800 917 9994 and we can provide advice and support. MOTHER'S DAY FEATURE 

By Tom Hancock

“Why do we even need Mother’s Day?” My 14-year-old daughter grumped as I suggested she might like to put some consideration into a card and flowers. Well Gracie, let me enlighten you...

Why do we have Mother’s Day?

T

he full time job - No holiday. No time off for good behaviour. 24 hours, 365 days per year and no pay. If my boss at work tried to impose these conditions as the terms of my contract I’d have grounds to take him to court. The housework - It may surprise you Gracie to know that the house does not clean and tidy itself. Clothing does not wash, iron and sort itself into drawers. There isn’t an army of cleaning fairies who pop out at night to dust and run the vacuum cleaner over the carpet. It is actually your Mum. Ok some of it is me,

and you will do the odd chore (generally reluctantly) but mostly, let’s be honest here, it’s mum. The food Meal-planning, shopping, cooking. It’s just done, sorted, no problems. I realise you and your brother clear the table and stack the dishwasher, mostly while grumbling about slave labour and the general unfairness of life, but I’m betting you’d miss the meals if they suddenly stopped. The taxi How often do you use your mum as a fareless taxiservice? What if she made you walk, catch a bus or cycle to

your friends’ houses. What if she starting charging you? The organiser – Where are you supposed to be at 9.30am this Saturday? Or 4pm on Tuesday? Bet mum knows! The therapist That boy you like but who broke your heart? Mum will offer hugs and a shoulder to cry on. That nasty teacher who was making your life a misery? Who spoke to her on your behalf? Which subjects should you take at school? Should you choose hockey practice or clarinet lessons? Mum will advise. You may not like the advice or take it, but you know she cares.

The banker That school trip you forgot to tell us about? The night out at the cinema with friends you simply must attend? The new shoes you absolutely have to buy? Who stumps up for all this stuff? That’s right, your mum. So a card, a handwritten note, a hug, a kiss and a heartfelt ‘Thank you mum’ will go a long way toward making her feel special, and yes it does seem ridiculous we have to have a day set aside for it but that’s the point! In our busy lives for one day we stop, think and appreciate everything she does. So that Gracie darling is why we have Mother’s Day!

New scam targets the elderly and vulnerable Phone scamming is becoming more and more common – and a new menace facing the elderly and vulnerable is on the rise.

W

hile many of us receive nuisance calls with offers to fix our computers or claiming we have won a holiday of a lifetime, this latest fraud targets a particular audience. Police forces have become aware of some older people receiving telephone calls from a caller claiming to be from their GP surgery, asking for an appointment to discuss the person’s mobility needs. The calls are targeted because in many cases, it is believe that unscrupulous firms are buying databases containing details of patients and their medical / mobility needs. Quite often they arrange to meet the person either in their own home or at a designated place – and will persuade them to

buy mobility aids (which could include bath lifts, scooters or reclining chairs) at inflated prices. More often than not, these aids are unnecessary, inappropriate and always expensive. We know of a couple of cases in where a bogus caller persuaded a patient awaiting a knee operation to buy an adjustable chair for more than eight times the retail price. In another instance, a patient with an already perfectly good working mobility scooter was tricked into buying another – at more than four times the retail price. While some appointments are arranged as a home visit, with the sole reason to sell something – others are made off site, to lure the person away from the house with the

intention of burgling the property whilst they are ‘out of the way’. The police in your area are aware of this latest scam, and information has also been circulated to all GP surgeries and the Clinical Commissioning Groups by the NHS. Remember: Never deal with cold callers – however persuasive they are. If you receive a call of this nature, always check with your GP surgery before agreeing to a visit. Likewise, any cold callers offering to carry out work on your property should be met with extreme caution. COMMUNITIES AGAINST CRIME 

The Bobby Scheme

Policeupdate

Pc 1796 Sykes , Yaxley Npst , Hampton Police Station

The Bobby Scheme secures homes of victims aged 60 and over and non victims aged 65 and over or disabled residents

Dear residents it was good for the team to meet you at the William de Yaxley School, we were duly supported on the night by the bobby scheme, safe local trades , Police and crime commissioner’s office, Neighbourhood watch, with a good turnout. A good mix of questions were presented from both the meeting and online, as the meeting also went out on social media. We continue to work with other neighbouring forces to cut down and tackle cross border crime, also at a local level working with partner agencies, Drs, Healthcare professionals, Housing associations and HDC to safeguard vulnerable persons who’s quality of life is being effected by ASB, and their neighbours lifestyle. We are still receiving reports regarding inconsiderate parking outside of the William de Yaxley school, I would again remind drivers to be considerate, when dropping off and collecting at the school local officers will be conducting patrols of the area, especially due to the ongoing building work at maltings square.

Our Bobbies not only fit security equipment to the homes of the elderly but also give safety advice which helps victims feel safe in their own homes again. We offer the same service to non-victims for a small donation. The charity was set up to improve the quality of life, increased independence and safety of older, vulnerable and disabled residents in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough by: • Reducing burglary • Reducing repeat victimisation • Reducing fear of crime • Increasing feelings of safety and providing peace of mind Why the community needs this charity Because we work closely with Cambridgeshire Police we are able to identify victims of burglary aged 60+ within 24 hours and offer our security service immediately. We are then able to target crime hot spots in the county and secure the homes of non-victims aged 65+ in the area, thus reducing the likelihood of thieves returning to the vicinity. This not only makes people safer in their own homes but also reduces the fear of crime and enables elderly people to stay in their own homes longer. Results and outcomes Over the last 14 years we have secured over 23,000 homes. Our repeat victimisation rate is still less than 1%. This means vulnerable people are safer in their own homes and we reduce the fear of crime. By helping elderly people remain independent longer we reduce the cost of care and nursing home facilities. On March 1st the Bobby Scheme is moving to Yaxley. Our new address will be Yaxley Police Station, 1 Queen Street, Yaxley, PE7 3JE. 01480 413311

The Tortoise & The Hare We all know the story of the Tortoise and the Hare. It’s a poignant and educational story that is told by parents and enjoyed by children. Here at Tortoise we believe that it sums up the lettings agency business as well as the estate agency business in a nutshell. Every day we come across situations where we can see how differently we work from other agents. Our methods have been tried and tested over 12 months and the results have been impressive. When it comes down to the story’s fables Estate Agents who DO NOT cut corners will win the race. The Hare is a confident fellow that has no doubt he will win. So confident in fact he can cut corners, rest during the race and still feel he will beat the Tortoise with minimal effort. The race to him is a numbers game – he sees the objective and believes he doesn’t have to try hard to achieve it. The Tortoise on the other hand knows he can win the race putting in the effort and hard work necessary to push him to the finish line ahead of his competition. He sees the objective for what it is and knows that being professional, building a trusting relationship with his client and demonstrating a structured plan he will ensure he crosses that finish line first. Here at Tortoise we stage your home, have it photographed by a professional, we then write up a thorough description and put together a video story of your home and advertise it as set out in our 12-week marketing plan. On our lettings side we use a structured 6-week marketing plan. With our clients at Tortoise we set out a plan to win. If you would like more information please feel free to call one of our Relationship Managers on 01733 592020 or visit our website at www.tortoiseproperty.co.uk

Sawtry Village Academy This month, Principal Sarah Wilson provides an update on the Academy’s latest Ofsted report: Our latest inspection took place in December 2015, and the report praised the school for implementing new processes and strategies which have had a positive impact in supporting the safety, welfare and behaviour of students. For the 4th consecutive time, our sixth form was rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, with particular reference to the standard of teaching and guidance students receive about their next steps after school, and leadership and management at the Academy were reported to ‘have been completely transformed.’ We’re really pleased to say that we’re now out of Special Measures. Shailesh Vara, MP for North West Cambridgeshire, also offered his support: “It is good to see that the

improvements at Sawtry Village Academy in the last 18 months have resulted in it being removed from special measures by Ofsted. Much credit must be given to the reforms introduced by the academy’s parent trust, Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust, and its Principal, Sarah Wilson, who have worked very hard in difficult circumstances. Challenges do of course remain for the Academy but this report is an important step in the right direction.” We’re delighted that Ofsted has recognised the remarkable determination and hard work put in by everyone at the Academy over the past 18 months under the excellent strategic leadership ofthe Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust. For the report to say that pupils are proud of their school is a huge step in the right direction. Please contact the school to see the full report.

SCHOOLS 

Holme Village PreSchool The children have been enjoying little walks around the village and have been so sensible. They took a lovely walk to Holme CofE Primary School and enjoyed story time with the reception children their. The reception teacher was very impressed with how well the children behaved. This provided the Pre-school children with a wonderful opportunity to see what it will be like for them when they move up to big school, making the transaction less daunting for them. To celebrate St Valentines Day the children invited their parents into Pre-school by making them Valentine invitations for a lovely morning of tea and biscuits, which was a beautiful surprise for all involved. Our new Baby & Toddler Group is running on a Friday morning 9:30-11:30am, everyone is welcome, charge is per session £2 per toddler & £1 babies (under 6m) 50p per additional child. Refreshments and snack for child. Looking for a lovely little village Pre-school? It’s never too early to get your child’s name down.

Stretton Pre School Folksworth C of E Primary We are already half way through the school year – it seems to be flying by! We began the year with a visit from a theatre company, who performed ‘Alice in Wonderland’ for us all. We also welcomed our new children into Class 1, and they have all settled really well, and are enjoying their learning. They have the benefit of a fabulous outdoor area, where they are able to let their imaginations fly, and where their learning is enhanced with all the activities that they are able to do. Class 2 (Year 1 and 2) have had a great first half of the year, and did a brilliant job of putting on their Christmas Concert along with Class 1. It is always wonderful to see their confidence growing as they perform to everyone with such clear voices and great singing. Class 3 (Year 3 and 4) have welcomed a new full-time teacher, who has been doing all sorts of exciting things with them, which they are thoroughly enjoying…the other day they were creating intestines as part of their work on the body! They then were

able to make use of their digestive systems to enjoy the chocolate that they made! Class 4 (Year 5 and 6) have risen to the challenge of being the oldest in the school, and it is great to see the way they behave in school and set such a good example to the younger children. They led the Carol Service in December, and did a fantastic job. Recently, we played host to the Yaxley Runners, as they put on the annual Folksworth 15 run. This is a fabulous event, which is brilliantly organised, and which really puts us on the map. As a school, we are proud to be able to host the event, and we also benefit hugely from the money that the P.T.A. raises from running the refreshment stall for the event. We are proud to be a big part of the village of Folksworth, and to serve the community and the wider area through offering the very best we can for the children that come to us. We enjoy our close link with St Helen’s church, and with the other schools in the area, with whom we have a strong partnership.

Stretton Pre-School is delighted to announce that following a routine Ofsted Inspection in January, our Main Street was rated as GOOD. The inspector in particular highlighted the excellent parental partnerships that we establish with our families. We have spaces for 2 year olds to school age children - call or email us for more information; or drop in at any time for a look around our welcoming pre-school and to meet our friendly staff. The children have been busying exploring the Woodland Theme! They read 'We're going on a bear hunt' and had fun making scrambled snake and gruffalo crumble. They have also been learning about food - where it comes from and what foods they like. They enjoyed talking about the food they ate as babies and feeding their dollies! Our next event is our Easter Party which is on Sunday 20th March at our Main Street site. There will be an Easter Egg trail, food and drink available and lots more familyfriendly activities. We look forward to see you there! >>

Fourfields Fourfields is very pleased to have been awarded the ‘Food for Life’ Bronze award. This would not have been possible without lots of commitment and hard word from Miss Douglas, Miss Dean and Mrs Godfrey, our school cook, over the past two years. The award recognises the school for its healthy and climate friendly food culture. As part of the Bronze award scheme, the school must serve seasonal meals, 75% of which are freshly prepared by our experienced school cook, Sharon Godfrey. The school also gives every pupil the opportunity to visit a farm, cook and participate in food growing activities during his or her time at school, and pupils and parents are involved in making improvements to the school’s menu and dining experience. Huge congratulations to the team and onwards to the Silver Award! The school has recently enjoyed a thoroughly successful literacy week which included many highlights.

22

Many of our children took part in an ‘Usborne Sponsored Read’, gaining sponsorship for the amount of reading they completed over the week. Lots of money has been raised and our bookworms will soon be receiving a gift voucher to spend on some new Usborne books. Throughout the week, we were delighted to welcome several parents into school to share their favourite stories with the children. This special reading time was thoroughly enjoyed by all. As well as this, children and adults enjoyed a cosy evening of bedtime stories before finishing with some well-deserved hot chocolate and biscuits. Thank you to all our storytellers and volunteer staff, who gave up their evening, either to share their favourite stories or to help the event run smoothly. Amongst many other highlights, the poetry slam that took place on Friday 29th January was a real hit! Competition was fierce (mainly between the teachers!!) and children gave lively performances. It will most certainly become a regular feature of our future literacy celebrations!

Yaxley Infants This term our Foundation Stage children chose to learn all about animals. Over the last few weeks they have been busy with a whole range of activities from making binoculars to spot animals in the jungle, to painting pictures of animals and labelling them and making plasticine models of animals and writing sentences about the animal. The children have researched animals using Kidrex and found their creative sides with animal dancing. They have enjoyed the story “We are going on a Bear Hunt “and have retold the story but changed the animal so we have had monkey, zebra and even cheetah hunts! The children have considered deeper issues such as “Should animals be kept in cages?” and “Is it a problem to chop down trees?” This week the children visited Hamerton Zoo to find out even more

about animals. As well as looking around the zoo the children took part in a workshop led by zoo staff. This taught them all about mammals, birds and reptiles and which creatures have feathers, fur and scales. The children got the opportunity to touch a bearded dragon, hedgehog, an owl and a snake. I wonder how each one felt? As part of the enterprising work the children at Yaxley Infant School are taking part in Foundation Stage children chose to raise money for Hamerton Zoo. They decided to hold a cake stall; they baked, decorated and sold the cakes themselves. They were very pleased to have raised £140 for the zoo and presented the money during their visit. They have more fundraising events planned for later this term so watch this space…

FARMING 

March is finally here, with its ‘mad March hares’ as hares begin their courtship displays…and spring is on its way.

Farmer Tom

T

o prove it, spring onions are in season this month as well as cauliflower, kale, baby leeks and purple sprouting broccoli. And rhubarb; mmmnn. In the fishmongers there’s fresh sea bass and sardines and from the wild game larder there’s venison and wood pigeon. But spring isn’t really here until Nigel Rome and his family have their annual ‘Lambing Sunday’ at their farm in Morborne (PE7 3TG), which this year is on Sunday 13 March and is supported by the NFU. There’ll be a chance to see lambs born during the day of course, but a LOT more besides, with tractors to climb on, chicks

to hold, pigs to scratch, games to play, shire horse rides and lots more. I’ll certainly be there, and there will be lots of farmers there to show you what goes on at this time of the year to help the sheep as their lambs are born. It’s ideal for families…and big kids too! It costs £5 for adults (children are free) but every penny goes to charity (Anna’s Hope & RABI); Nigel and the team give everything for free. Thanks Farmer Nigel! On our farm this month, we’ll be doing the same as Nigel, but without a couple of thousand spectators! We’ll have lambs born, and we’ll be planting our

spring crops including wheat (for your bread), linseed (with the beautiful blue flower), and canary grass (yes, for your canaries!). We’re looking forward to Easter too, with all the signs of life that are celebrated then. Last year we had the tiniest lamb born on Easter Sunday. He was so small and weak that we thought he wouldn’t live, but we helped him to take his vital first milk feeds and visited every two hours to stand him up and help him take his first steps, and…he made it! Farming is challenging, but seeing a lamb like that survive is priceless.

 SPORT

Yaxley Football Club It’s been another fascinating season to report on from behind the keyboard and pitch side at In2itive Park.

I

love editing www.yaxleyfc.com, it’s probably my dream job (well voluntary position, but you know what I mean!), and one I always relish. However, I spend most of my time interviewing the Managers, Players and reporting on matches. With that in mind I have been asked a few time for my opinion on matters YFC and so here they are! The club has moved forward rapidly off the pitch again in the last year. We seem to go in spurts of massive activity with the ground and then periods where it may appear nothing much is happening. With the speed of implementation of the 3g pitch though, it has been clear that just because there is no building work at the ground doesn’t mean the directors are not working hard to make things happen. I occasionally have to pop in the ground on a week night, even when the first team are not playing, and the number of people around the club playing football or enjoying a drink and a chat is amazing. It’s something the club and the wider community should

be proud of backing. The place is a hive of activity and that is absolutely in tune with my vision of how a football club should look. Even at non-league level, there are too many clubs that open up on a Saturday lunch time before closing that same evening. Not only does that not create much needed revenue, it also gives a narrow window of opportunity for people to interact and be part of the club. We are getting round that at YFC and its already encouraging to see the number of juniors wearing their colours in the village and an ever more passionate crowd at matches. Yaxley will always struggle to match the gates of some of the other clubs in the area. We are too near the centre of Peterborough. But we do have our own identity and there is a growing following, especially on social media, of people who consider their selves from the village as opposed to the neighbouring city. We just need to keep working hard to get them into the ground on a match day and keep them coming back as often as they can. Having an academy bedding in has also been a major positive from the last year. Of course the proof will be how many of these players go on to play for the club or at an even higher level. But the opportunities

now available to young footballers in the village are massive and if the work and application is there you will get an education whilst being full time with Yaxley Football Club. For me that is still mind blowing and I literally can’t wait for one of these lads to come through into the first team and start saving penalties or smashing in the goals. It is the right way a club should operate and rather that throw silly money round on players (and it does even happen in this league), we simply must grow the core of a side who have been in and around the club for a period of time and feel right about wearing the blue shirt of the Cuckoos. My final off the field positive has been the integration of Wayne Hind and the Ladies section into the club. Having seen them play a few times the pace and power of their performances have been reflected in results. From a website perspective we are achieving the highest numbers of clicks and unique pages views ever. We are getting nigh on 1000 unique views of the website per week with an average of 2 pages looked at. This is fantastic data to take back to sponsors and advertisers. You place an ad with us and we will do our level best to make sure your business is seen.

 PETS

Will you be breaking the law? Did you know it will be compulsory, by law, for all dogs to be microchipped from 6th April 2016?!

W

e’d rather be talking about the fun you can have with your pets or a happy story from our surgeries but this month we MUST tell you about something VERY IMPORTANT! Here’s what you need to know: • All dogs over 8 weeks old MUST be microchipped • Dog owners must keep the microchip database up-to-date • Non-compliance of this new law can incur a £500 fine • An enforcement officer can seize any unchipped dogs • Only exemption is if a Vet certifies, in writing, that the dog is medically unfit for microchipping (in these circumstances, the owner is given a longer time period to comply) • Breeders MUST microchip their puppies BEFORE rehoming

So why the new law? Over 110,000 stray dogs are picked up by the police, local authorities and welfare charities each year costing the taxpayer and the charities over £33 million! Sadly in over half these cases, the owners cannot be identified and approximately 6000 dogs are put to sleep as they are not suitable for re-homing. To combat this problem the government has passed this law which hopes to reunite more stray dogs with their owners, relieve the burden on the charities and local authorities while also protecting dog welfare by promoting responsible dog ownership. What is a microchip? A microchip is a harmless radio chip about the size of a grain of rice. It is injected under the skin of your pet in the same way as a routine vaccination. Each one is coded with a unique number which that can be read by a harmless

scanner. The number is linked on a national database with the owners contact details. The benefits! Like all animal welfare organisations, we welcome this change of law. Not only will it help us reunite stray pets with their owners (which is vitally important in cases of emergency) but we also feel it will help fight the worrying rise in dog theft. If your dog isn’t microchipped yet – please book an appointment at any of our surgeries. Dogs aren’t the only pets who would benefit from a microchip – cats, birds, rabbits, even tortoises and snakes – any animal can be microchipped to protect against loss or theft for only £9.99 at Cromwell Vets.

If you have any questions about microchips or the new law, ask our friendly staff or visit www.petlog.org.uk/pet-owners For more information visit www.icatcare.org or speak to the Cromwell Vets Veterinary team on 01480 52601

your garden

Banish the weeds and bring your lawn to life

N

ow is the time to ensure your lawn gets the best possible start to this year’s growing season. Sisters Sarah and Jo Parish run the GreenThumb lawn care business in our area and with nearly 2000 customers their expert team will soon be busy applying spring fertiliser and weedkill treatments to get lawns looking lush green, healthy and weed free for summer. Having spent all their working lives in horticulture Sarah and Jo have always had to work around the weather. Sarah says “Because of the mild and wet winter the grass has kept growing and so have the weeds! Moss easily creeps into lawns and the leatherjacket lawn pest (crane-fly/daddy long leg larvae) with their

ferocious appetite has been decimating lawns by eating away all the grass. We can’t wait to get onto lawns and get them into great shape for summer.” It’s a never-ending battle to keep your lawn weed free as seeds lie dormant and others are blown in from neighbouring locations, so your lawn needs on-going treatment. To keep weeds out of your lawn Sarah’s top tips are: Never cut your grass too short – grass that’s less than 25mm (1”) will easily let weed and moss take a hold. Make sure you set your mower at the right height and even increase the height to 50mm (2”) during dry spells. Make sure your flower beds are kept weed free – seeds easily blow into the lawn.

Remember the gardeners saying “one year of weed is ten years of seed” Create a thick and healthy lawn – cut your lawn regularly at the correct height and you’ll encourage healthy roots. Together with a regular feed you can transform an ordinary lawn into a real show piece. Get expert help from GreenThumb – correct, accurate and safe use of weedkill and fertiliser is what we’re about. We take away all the hassle so sign up now for our seasonal ‘weed & feed’ treatments four times a year. Our prices start at £15 a treatment for a lawn up to 40 square metres. We’re cheaper than DIY!

THE EYEBROW TREATMENT THAT EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT…

Microblading

Eyebrow embroidery also known as microblading is the Japanese Method of Semi Permanent Brows and is relatively new to the UK. It is considered to be semi-permanent, as it’s compared to the traditional hairstroke machine technique. It is done using a very fine blade (made up of 10-16 tiny, fine needles configured into a blade shape) to deposit pigments into the epidermis. Because we’re impacting colour closer to the top skin surface, the strokes appear and remain crisp and extremely fine. The results are very natural looking, feathered hair-like strokes, regardless of the amount of hair present.

Fat reduction

Cosmic Katie‘ s Stars COMMUNITY NEWS

March 2016

By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer

Pisces February 20-March 20

Your career amps up from the 8th, but make sure you don't abandon a work project before it's finished. Exciting opportunities are looming, but pursuing them without fulfilling your obligations will cause problems. Venus enters your sign on the 12th bringing excitement, fun and flirtation.

Aries March 21-April 20 You're being given all the responsibility with none of the rewards. If you want to get ahead, you should launch your own business but pay close attention to details to avoid costly mistakes. You weren't meant to hide in the shadows; it's now time to take your place in the spotlight.

Taurus April 21-May21 Changes in your romantic situation, partnerships, children and creative work as well as being noticed for who you are and what you do are big themes for you this month. Desire soars and you absolutely must express all this energy. Single? This is a great time to attract a partner into your life.

Gemini May 22-June 22 Your love life is heating up this month. If you suspect someone has a crush on you, trust your instincts. A passionate romance will be yours for the taking, so long as you're willing to make the first move. Settled? your partner will be very attentive so take this opportunity to enjoy some intimate moments together. Cancer June 23-July 23

Use your powers of persuasion to get something you really want. It will be impossible for others to argue with your logic this month. A simmering romance gets the green light, so expect temperatures and passions to rise. Focus on finances around the 20th and look at ways of managing you money more effectively.

Leo July 24-August 23

Resist the temptation to give advice, even if people are struggling. When someone wants your assistance, they'll ask for it. An extravagant treat could prove irresistible, but an outsider could claim that too much time or energy is being spent on it; avoid conflict, by acting like you haven't heard them.

Virgo August 24-September 23

Establishing a secure financial foundation has been difficult. Not only are you trying to support yourself, but you are also providing support for loved ones. Until you find a more lucrative line of work, you'll struggle. Don't be afraid to pursue a job requiring lots of responsibility.

Libra September 24-October 23 Love and romance will be on your mind as the month begins, as will be the realisation of what you truly want and need from a relationship. Feeling neglected? maybe it's time to break things off and look for someone who only wants to be with you. Health niggles should be swiftly addressed.

Scorpio October 24-November 22

You're easily bored, which can cause problems in relationships and even friendships. Your loved ones feel like you're not fully engaged as you are looking for the next best thing. Instead of seeking greener pastures, focus on giving your nearest and dearest the respect they deserve.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21

You should experience an enormous sense of relief as you find a rather fragile relationship is slowly being restored to its former strength. It's really important not to rush things, You're intellectually savvy and impulsive so think outside the box in order to get a work opportunity off the ground.

Capricorn December 22-January 20 You're mentally sharp and articulate right now, which gives you the courage and confidence to peruse other options and think for yourself without buckling to peer pressure. An invite to a glamorous event should be jumped at as golden opportunities and connections will be made.

THE LAMPSHADE WAREHOUSE LIGHTING OUTLET T: 01733 264 391 E: sales@tlsw.co.uk

Your relationship prospects are very strong. If you've been thinking about steering a platonic friendship into romantic waters, now is the time to do it. Settled? Take this opportunity to enjoy some private moments together. If pressure at work shows no sign of let up, maybe it's now time to look elsewhere. Put your feelers out.

Aquarius January 21-February 19 Some opportunities come along so unannounced that they're over before we can respond, leaving us wondering 'what if'? Then, those same circumstances arise again and again. Pay attention to any repeated messages this month. It's not often that you can push the reset button, but now you just might have that chance. BLOG

by Drew Pontikis

“Hello. We would like to inform your boiler can be replaced with a subsidiary from the government. Bertie Boilers would like to help you…..” Why on earth have I got companies contacting me about my boiler all of a sudden? And I say companies; it isn’t so much companies its recorded messages. Well thank you very much, it’s so kind of you not to take the time to call me to actually talk about what you’re selling. You’re right – much better to show you’re not really interested in talking to me but bombard me with voicemails, that’ll really get me on board. “Hello Mr Pon….Ponk….Pontikitis?” “Close enough, hello?” “I’m calling to tell you that your bank has money set aside for you from previous PPI you’ve paid” “Brilliant thanks very much, I’ll give them a call and get them to send it to me” “Yes you could do that, or ...we could do it for you?” Ok PPI companies it’s really getting a bit silly now. EVERYONE has heard of PPI by now, It is not news to me that I can claim it if I’ve had it on a loan or mortgage. I can tell you now if I ever felt inclined to try and claim for it all I would need to do would be watch Jeremy Kyle one morning and wait for an ad break, there really isn’t any need for you to call me. “Hello I’m calling from Microsoft…” Yes because Microsoft, the world’s largest software company is going to cold call me. They’ve definitely got nothing better to do than keep an eye on what suspicious files I may have just downloaded onto my PC or laptop. I get so many of these calls that I’m at the point where I have to stop myself getting angry at them now. It must be a horrible job to do it, and really the best advice I can give you is that if someone is cold calling you to sell you something, it’s because it isn’t good enough for people to make the effort to go and buy it. And if Microsoft ever ring you, just hang up because it isn’t Microsoft calling.
