Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School We are very proud to announce that we have achieved the outstanding outcome from our recent Ofsted inspection which took place just before Christmas The staff have all been working very hard to maintain the outstanding service we provide to children and their families since our last inspection in 2014. We were delighted when we were given the outstanding grade again in December 2018. One of our main focuses at Little Acorns is to work closely with the families as well as the children who attend the setting. It is very important that parents, grandparents and other family members feel included and part of the Little Acorns family. We are so pleased that Ofsted were able to see this and feel the homely feeling that Little Acorns has.“Staff provide children with a wonderfully warm and welcoming environment. The leadership team gives partnerships with parents the highest priority.” Children attending nursery benefits there social skills, play skills and prepares them for when they start school. The staff at Little Acorns treat every child as an individual, providing activities and guidance to support their individual learning. “Staff have exceptional skills in leading and extending children’s learning.” Children gain confidence through these experiences; parents are involved so the children’s learning is consistent at home and nursery. To read our full Ofsted report please visit the Ofsted website. Registration is simple and you can register here (app.doctorlink.com/ lakesideyaxley/register) or visit our website at www.yaxleygp.nhs.uk For all urgent appointment, we ask that you undertake a symptom assessment through DoctorLink. Phil is a fund raiser and spokesperson for MAGPAS, now the emotional bit starts when Phil told us about his car accident four years ago in which he was lucky to survive. He did however, have a broken neck and for many weeks it was thought he would be paralysed from the neck down. Phil never resigned himself to this though, and every day willed his limbs to start working again, eventually the limbs did start to move, and he is now walking and doing all the routine things he did before, albeit mindful of his injuries and taking care when lifting etc. It was MAGPAS that saved his life, although he doesn’t remember too much about it, but now he is a spokesperson for them, raising awareness of their work and
what ultimately is an essential service in life threatening situations, but unfortunately still relies on charitable donations. It was a lovely talk, from a very dedicated and grateful person, and comes highly recommended. Just be prepared for a few teary eyes! We have also enjoyed our annual meal at the Admiral Wells, lots of talking and eating and catching up after Christmas. Emphasis on talking! Anyone interested in joining, please do come along and see what we are all about and what we get up to. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. All ladies will receive a warm and friendly welcome.

Cambridgeshire fire and rescue
YAXLEY LIBRARY
As the weather drops further and the snow and ice kicks in, we begin using our fires, burners and chimneys more often to heat up our homes. But, have you had your chimney swept in the last year?
The library presents
We are so excited about our theatre event “ROCKET GIRL” we are asking our younger customers to design a planet for our own Rocket Girl to explore, which will then be displayed in the library. Do call in to ask us about this. Don’t forget, Rocket Girl, by Ditto Theatre Company, is on Saturday 30 March 3.30pm at Queen’s Park Hall, Daimler Ave, Yaxley, PE7 3LX, Tickets £4 per person, £14 family saver. Suitable for families with children aged 5+ years.
Follow our ‘top tips’ below to ensure your home is kept safely warm and cosy all year round:
Chimneys and Open Fires
Have your chimney swept at least once a year Avoid burning resinous woods that quickly build up soot Do not overload the grate/ appliance Do not bank fires too high and remember to let them burn out well before you go to bed Check the hearth, floor and furnishings near the fire for hot sparks/embers Do not place objects on or over the mantelpiece which cause you to stand too close to the fire in order to reach them Use a fire/spark guard to prevent accidental fires and make sure it has the kite mark or conforms to British/ European standards Inspect your chimney breast, particularly the roof space. Make sure it is sound and sparks/fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks.
A qualified and competent engineer should install all wood/multi-fuel burners and boilers – regular maintenance should be undertaken to prolong the working life of the appliance. You can refer to www. solidfuel.co.uk for advice and information. Ensure correct ventilation is in place when the appliance is in use Regularly inspect the chimney and flues Generally wood should be well-seasoned (usually wood kept dry and stored for around 2 years) Avoid wet or newly felled wood as this will cause tars/ creosote deposits forming in the burning appliance and chimney Using laminated chip boards will leave binding glue deposits For each slow burning period there should follow a quick burn to dry out unwanted tar/creosote deposits and to warm up the chimney again At the end of each burning season and at least once during the season the entire system should be cooled and thoroughly cleaned to maintain top performance.
Most importantly
Only burn fuels suitable for your burner Fit a smoke alarm That carries the kite mark or British Standard Number 5446 and test your alarm weekly and know the life of your battery. Always install a CO alarm in the room where the burner is installed. Chimney Fires continue to be a common occurrence in home fires in the winter months.
We experience an average of 81 chimney fires a year in Cambridgeshire alone. Whatever fire you have, or fuel you burn, it is vitally important you have your chimney swept to avoid a build-up of ash and soot.

Yaxley’s LilWarrior
Hi, my name is Lily and I am 8 years old. I love animals, in fact I love animals so much that I even became a vegetarian. I hate the thought of animals suffering, so I have created a YouTube channel called LilWarrior. The idea of LilWarrior is to tell people about the damage that is being done to the environment. I would like to get support from other LilWarriors (and their grown-ups too), so they make little changes in their day-to-day lives, that will help save the animals and the planet. I have always wanted to set up a YouTube channel and came up with the idea of LilWarrior when I was on holiday in Thailand. The beaches were beautiful, but I also saw a lot of rubbish, which made me feel a bit sad. I did a few beach cleans to try and do my little part and the idea of LilWarrior was born. The inspiration for doing a beach clean came from something my mum showed me
called #2minutebeachclean, where they believe every bit of litter removed from the beach matters. I have made videos about the damage that is caused by plastic rubbish and what it is doing to our planet and wildlife. I talk about the small, easy changes that people can make to reduce their use of plastic. One idea for an easy change is to replace your plastic drinking straws with reusable ones, made of bamboo, metal or even glass. A lot of lovely people have supported me and I now have a small following of LilWarriors, who have already made changes to reduce their plastic waste after watching my videos. I would really like LilWarrior to grow so that more people can make changes and our world can be a better place.

St Peter’s Church
When this issue lands on your doorstep it’s likely we’ll be approaching, or have just started, Lent
Lent begins on 6 March; Ash Wednesday. Most people enjoy tucking into their pancakes on Shrove Tuesday but how many of us think about why we celebrate this day, and then go on to participate in Lent? Lent marks the lead up to Easter. So, what are we really doing when we take part in Lent? As Christians participating in Lent, we are replicating the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert, resisting temptation. It is a time of reflection and preparation. Traditionally, Lent was a time to give something up, however, in recent years it has been recognised that Lent can be a time to give. Jesus lived a life characterised by His generosity and love, He noticed people’s needs, He gave his time, and ultimately, He gave his life and changed the World. Campaigns such as #40acts, 40 generous acts in 40 days, recognise that through generosity, we can begin to change lives, in the same way Jesus did! Generosity happens when we see the opportunity not the obstacle, let’s seize these opportunities and see our community thrive further; let’s live the lives Jesus wanted for us. Lent is concluded in the final week before Easter; Holy Week. At SPC we will be marking this week with four evenings of Meditations led by our Home Groups, taking place Monday to Thursday, from 7.30pm. On Good Friday, we have time for reflection at 11am & 2pm services and our Easter Sunday celebrations will be taking place at our 9am & 11am Holy Communion services. At our 11am service we will be inviting the young people whom have been preparing to receive Holy Communion, to take their first communion with us. Everyone is invited to all our services and events, to come along and experience the love of Jesus.

This month is all about our Brownie Pack in Yaxley This year my Brownie pack 1st Yaxley will reach their 60th Anniversary, quite an achievement. We are still going strong with 16 girls between 7 and 10 years old currently part of our Monday group. To help us celebrate our anniversary we thought it would be interesting for the girls to hear about Brownies and Guiding in days gone by especially from those who have been Brownies over the last 60 years. Were you a 1st Yaxley Brownie? Could you spare 30 minutes to come and talk to our girls about how it was for you, have you got any old badges or mementos from that time? Hopefully it will bring back some pleasant memories for you too and give you a chance to see how Brownies have changed over the years. We would love to hear from you. You can contact me by email firstyaxleybrownies58@outlook.com or call 01733 245194.

Yaxley Methodist Chapel A friend has recently been diagnosed with cancer and will shortly be having an operation to remove his prostrate It made me think about how difficult it is to find the right words for someone when life has suddenly become scary, awful, unfair. In an article recently two people undergoing treatment were asked what they don't want to hear. The answers were confusing because as one said they didn't like to be told 'you are a fighter, you can beat this' the other said they found that enabling. Obviously from this it depends on the person who is going through this highly stressful time and maybe your relationship with them. Offering practical help such as cooking meals, doing the washing or driving them to hospital appointments are things that you may be able to do to show you care. But just being there as a friend in times of need is what is important isn't it? If you need someone to talk to we are here at the Chapel on Sunday mornings or on the morning of the second Saturday of the month. We have a quiet room where we can go if you ask one of us. Sunday Services start at 10.30am every week. Our Coffee Morning is on the 9 March 10am. Don’t miss out on the homemade cakes! You can keep up to date with our events on our Facebook page.

POWER OF ATTORNEY IS AS ESSENTIAL AS CAR INSURANCE . Some facts.. Why do you need a Power of Attorney? • More of us become unable to manage our affairs these days, without a Power of Attorney your family may need to go to Court. This can cause lots of hassle, delay and expense.
What happens if there is no Power of Attorney? • The courts may appoint someone to manage your financial affairs, without your consent. • Your friends or family may need to go to court to get authority to act on your behalf – this can be a lengthy, costly & upsetting experience. • Doctors could rule loved ones on decisions you have already made regarding health matters. • By setting up a Power of Attorney now, you make things easier for your loved ones in the future, whilst keeping control of your affairs now.
Why should you use Roc & Co Estate Planning? • We prepare thousands of Powers of Attorney each year in the UK, and make it easier for you. • We will prepare your Power of Attorney and we can register them for you as well. • Over 50% of clients are referred and go on to use us for other services. • We will come to you and explain in simple and understandable terms about Lasting Power of Attorneys.

Lancaster Club
The Royal British Legion Sue Whaley
Take a walk along Main Street in Yaxley and you will find, opposite the Three Horseshoes public house, the Royal Air Forces Association’s Lancaster Club.
localfocus
The building in which the Lancaster Club is located dates back to the early 1800’s when it was a public house, namely The King William IV. Following the pubs closure and after a period when it was used as a residential building, 152 Main Street was purchased on behalf of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA). In 1969 when beer was only 16p a pint and a man stepped on the moon, a dedicated group of local Royal Air Force (RAF) ex-servicemen and locals refurbished the building, creating the Yaxley Branch of RAFA, as well as the Lancaster Club for the social use of not only RAF veterans, but also for the residents of Yaxley and surrounding villages. In 1971, both the RAFA branch and Lancaster Club were awarded charity status. This year marks our 50th anniversary. The original aims for our branch and club have not changed from 1969. The RAFA branch continues to provide comradeship, friendship and welfare for serving and ex-serving RAF personnel as well as their dependants and the Lancaster Club still provides a friendly, relaxing atmosphere to all members who enjoy a wide range of good ales, social company and live music as well as traditional pub games. The Club facilities are in regular use by our local teams, - Dominos, Crib, Darts etc. Quiz and Bingo nights are also held each week. For you keen golfers the club has its own society with monthly events, so why not give it a try. To celebrate our 50th Anniversary this year, we will be holding our traditional annual beer fest in July (26-28th) with excellent local artists performing over the three days in the marquee. Saturday 3rd August is ‘anniversary day’ with a host of special activities planned to celebrate our 50th milestone. All of these events are open to members and non-members alike as well as families, so make a note of the dates in your diaries; we would love to see you. Further details will be available each month in the Gazette, on social media and posters around the village. Membership of the Lancaster club is open to all, so why not pop along and introduce yourself to any of our friendly bar staff or our stewardess Nora who will be pleased to provide you with more information.
Well the waiting is over and our newly refurbished bar is now up and running What an opening night we had, plenty of people old and new faces, to help us celebrate the evening along with the fabulous sounds of Luke Carey, ably assisted by Pip for a few numbers. From personal experience sore feet were the order of the next day! Our lovely Steward Sarah thanked those who had transformed the bar in 4 weeks to something that is now truly amazing. Bright new furnishings, ambient lighting that can be changed to suit the occasion, cosy seating area for relaxing and chatting to friends over a drink or few. Plenty of room for you to listen to our frequent musical evenings, from
Karaoke to returning vocalists, space for a dance too. Bright and airy place for Members and their guests to play pool and practice Darts, 180 anyone! We have teams in the relevant leagues for Darts, Ladies Darts and Pool. If you are interested please check out our website for further details. Please come and visit us during our opening hours, you would be most welcome, it is easy to become a member of the British Legion online or a form that can be collected from us. We look forward to welcoming you as a stranger, and you leaving as a friend.

On January 10, Lisa from the NSPCC paid a visit to William de Yaxley CE Academy and spoke to the children about child cruelty in an introductory assembly. She encouraged the children to “Speak out and stay safe”, no matter what She also introduced the NSPCC mascot – Buddy (who is a speech bubble), explaining that “All children do have a voice.”The whole school watched a video, giving them information about a child’s experience of emotional abuse, and then they had the opportunity to discuss this with Lisa. During class, two representatives from the NSPCC delivered workshops to Years 5 and 6. They talked to the children about the four different types of abuse plus bullying. The children were also shown a short film clip about a boy called Guy, and his experience of bullying. By the end of the session each class was able to identify the four forms that abuse might take: Physical, Sexual, Emotional and Neglect. The workshops focussed on encouraging the children, who might have a worry to speak to the NSPCC, by using their dedicated phone line or by going online (which is open 24 hours per day). At the end of each workshop a booklet was given to each child that suggested strategies for dealing with any problems they might have – no matter how big or small. After the workshops had taken place and the important messages were understood such as: nothing being too silly or small to talk about and that there is always someone that you can talk to. The children at William de Yaxley all said that whenever they found themselves in a difficult situation, they would call 0800 1111 (Childline). They said they felt more confident to speak out and that the NSPCC had suggested different strategies they could use to help them handle their personal issues. Following the workshops, the whole school have been involved in raising money for the NSPCC through completing a circuit of many stations including - The Plank, press ups, sit ups, burpees and shuttle run. This had to be completed in a given timescale. In exchange for a minimum donation of 50p to the charity the children were allowed to wear a PE kit of their choice for that P.E. session. Mr Hayes (Sports Coach) helped the children to successfully complete the circuit. All children were involved in some way and William de Yaxley CE Academy have raised £122.30. The pertinent message that was taken away from this was “Abuse is never our fault.” Everyone found the visits helpful.

William De Yaxley
We at Yaxley Infant school recognise the importance of reading and after the success of our ‘Bring your Parent/Carer to Phonics’ sessions, we decided to organise a whole week dedicated to phonics and reading
Throughout the week beginning 28 January we invited parents to join us in school to learn more about phonics and reading. On Monday Year 2 parents joined the children in class to complete phonics and grammar challenges. Tuesday and Wednesday saw an Early Years Foundation Stage Story Café for the parents to join the children for a story. Thursday saw a Year 1 Phonics Screening information session to learn more about the national screening check and on Friday classrooms were open to all parents to join the children in curling up with a good book. Over the week we had over 170 parents/ carers in school learning about and enjoying reading. What a successful week! Thanks everyone for coming! We finally have signs off the Broadway showing people where our wonderful little school is! Mr Connelly a school governor has worked tirelessly and with great persistence (it was needed!) to enable us to put up the signs. Thank-you very much Mr Connelly. Well done! A real perseverance Parrot! We are now trying to recruit new governors. As a governor you would offer support to help with the running of the school. Governors meetings are termly and usually held in the evenings although some meetings can be during the school day. If you are interested in this rewarding role and want to give something back to the Yaxley community then please give us a call on the number below. Governors with local knowledge and links to other industries can make a huge difference to the development of the school and our children.
Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School We have enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year by exploring with chop sticks, getting messy with rice and noodles and also trying Chinese food We also have been making yummy treats for our loved ones for Valentine’s Day; the children enjoyed mixing the ingredients together and making their biscuits into heart shapes. Our pre-school invited their parents to join us for lunch. The children showed off their skills of pouring their own drinks, serving their own lunch and clearing away their plate a when they had finished. The parents very impressed with how independent the children are at nursery! We are currently taking bookings for September 2019 and also into 2020! If you would like to come and have a look around and are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or email (enquiries@littleacornsdaynursery.co.uk)
If you are a prospective parent or would like more information about how to be a school governor, please call the school on 01733 240918 or email (office@ yaxley.cambs.sch.uk) We look forward to meeting you.
Folksworth Pre-School Over the past month our children have become budding scientists. They have been making predictions about whether their chosen object will float or sink, they all had good ideas and enjoyed debating with each other. We have been looking at different materials to see If their prediction was correct. The children then used a tally chart to record the results. We have been experimenting with how things change using ice, paints and the weather outside. The children have also been very excited as they have been able to have hands on experiences using our new metal detectors to discover what an object is made from.

staff and volunteers from the East of England Agricultural Society who made the day such a success. School Governors play a critical role in the life of our school and we are also looking for new members to join our Governing Body. Being a governor can be enjoyable, stimulating and rewarding. Please don’t be put off by thinking that you have to have specialist expertise or knowledge. Enthusiasm and interest is much more important to start with and there is tried and tested training and support available to help you throughout the four years term of office.
Year 1 have been learning about comic strips in their theme “What makes a good baddie?” and Year 4 are considering “What makes a record breaker?”You never know we might have our first World Record right here at Fourfields. Year 5 are all about Inventions in “How on Earth does it work?” and Reception need to meet up with Keith Lemon for “Who lives in a place like this?”There is honestly never a dull moment and we look forward to seeing how the children’s learning progresses over the rest of the term! Mrs Mulley has received a prestigious award for her work on sustainable school travel at the Modeshift national conference. She has been campaigning for safe travel for over 12 years and has taken our school to Gold Level, which is the highest level nationally by promoting walking, scooting and cycling to school. Mrs Mulley has worked tirelessly to help keep our children safe and thoroughly deserves this recognition. Thank you for all you do to support our school Mrs Mulley!

We then thought about how determination, perseverance and team work help us to be the best we can be in school. We were also very lucky to be given tickets to attend a football match! This month, the whole school enjoyed a ‘Breakfast Day’ led by the East of England Agricultural Society. We had an amazing time taking part in some very exciting activities. Children had the opportunity to make and taste pancakes and sausages, learn about farming equipment and discover how our food is produced. We would like to say a special thank you to all of the
This term has already kicked off in an exciting way and our new learning is already proving to be exciting and inspirational. Year 2 are looking at “What makes a show great?” They started with a Circus day. Circus skills were taught, popcorn made and consumed and they got to design and make their own clown face. Year 3 are looking at “What can PIXAR teach us?” Learning so far has been through the film ‘UP’ and the children were challenged to make their own house that could float when attached to a colourful selection of balloons. Some were successful, others needed to go back to the drawing board. Year 6 are trying to decide “Are Humans good for our planet?” and amongst other things have started to look at some of the things developed by the human race. They needed to design and build the strongest bridge with a span of 30cm using straws, wood and pipe cleaners.

Bowlers old and new take note, the green will be open on Friday 12 April, with our first friendly club game The President’s team v Captain’s team on Saturday 27 April, this always proves a fun day. Bowls is a sport for all ages. Many of our members have come to bowls after being active sports men and women in their younger days and are looking at a way to get back to some social sport, that not only satisfies their competitive needs, but also helps keep you fit (albeit in a fairly gentle way). We cannot deny that the majority of our members are on the “mature” side but this does not have to be the case, as those who may have watched the bowls world championships on BBC recently would have realised. We offer a warm welcome to any new members and sometimes tea and cake, so if you are interested in joining us, why not phone our club Secretary Kathy Browning on 01733 241967, for a chat on how you can become involved.
Getting together as a club to celebrate success is always a good way to begin a new year and get the members motivated for the start of the season ahead. As we did last year, we will be holding our 2019 dinner and presentation night, at the Farmers, Broadway, Friday 1 March 6.30 for 7pm - £16 per ticket. Tickets are now on sale; contact Gill King on 01733 240324 for further details. Raising funds for the club is important so please, don’t forget the Quiz night on Saturday 16 March 7pm in the club pavilion. We all welcome our new club President for 2019, Mrs. Mary Wiles (pictured). We wish Mary every success for the year ahead.

Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/ gas 6. Heat the oil in a medium pan, then fry the onion for 6-8 minutes until soft. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute. Pour in the red wine; turn up the heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes to reduce the liquid by half. Add the tomatoes, sugar, Worcester sauce and tomato purée. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until thickened. Add the basil, and season well. Place the spinach in a large pan with a knob of butter. Cover and cook over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes until the spinach has wilted. It will seem to almost disappear! Drain the cooked spinach in a colander and press to squeeze out any excess water. Roughly chop, then mix with the rest of the creamy sauce ingredients. Taste and season well Spread a little of the spinach and ricotta sauce over the base of the baking dish, then cover with slightly overlapping lasagne sheets. Pour over a third of the remaining white sauce, sprinkle over a little of the grated cheese and top with half the tomato sauce. Cover with another layer of lasagne sheets, top with half the remaining white sauce, then all the remaining tomato sauce. Add the final layer of lasagne sheets, then spread with the rest of the white sauce. Scatter with the remaining grated cheese. Top with mozzarella slices and the grated Parmesan and bake for 30 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Mild Winter Cold Last March saw a late deluge of snow and cold weather following an extremely warm and mild winter ahead of a hot and dry summer Such abrupt temperature fluctuations can often create problems for wildlife. A spring that had been in full swing was abruptly halted and then slowly caught up again on itself; creating some strange occurrences of plants flowering together when usually one follows the other. This winter has also had a long warm spell with reports of still active worker wasps coming through in January. If winters continue to be warmer without cold spells we could end up similar to the north island of New Zealand where wasp nests never die out but grow year on year, reaching several metres in diameter. Our bees too would need to be active all year round and face winter starvation if the flowering plants do not adapt with equal alacrity. This is the month when most gardeners set to work again; it is time to start planning to provide that all year round buffet for our precious pollinators, but be prepared to shelter bugs from an early March freeze.

Tom Farmer
You lucky, lucky people! You, and your friends and family are welcome to witness part of what Sir David Attenborough would call “the greatest show on earth”; something the Huffington Post described as “nothing short of a miracle” That’s right, it’s Lambing Sunday, and this year it’s on Sunday 10 March. As usual it is hosted by the generous Rome family at their farm in Morborne, Peterborough PE7 3TG. Starting at 11am, you can not only see lambs being born right in front of you (as long as the ewes cooperate), but you can meet and hold newly hatched chicks, sit on lots of farm machinery from the tractor right up to the combine, and try your hand at milking a cow (well, a cardboard cow) and racing mini peddle tractors, as well as taking a ride on a cart pulled by a shire horse, and much more. Refreshments are available at the church, and the whole admission fee goes to charity; Nigel and Janet, and the local farming community put on the event for free. Don’t forget your wellies, and join us for what the Pattison family described as “an amazing experience”! We’ll see you there! Through the month of March, there’s a host of veggie delights coming in to season including potatoes, spring
greens, and watercress, and still at their best you have brussels, cabbage, cauliflower, leek, onion, parsnip, rhubarb and sping onion. At the butcher there are lots of fine, seasonal delights, and the same goes for the greengrocer. On the farm, we’ll be praying for rain – not too much, just enough, and just at the right time! It’s a delicate month as we try to get our spring-sown crops planted at the right time. Have a great March, and thanks for supporting British farmers!

Living with a house rabbit Perhaps you’ve just adopted your first rabbit, or maybe you already have a rabbit and would like more information to help you understand her better. The House Rabbit Society, a national nonprofit organization, recommends that you keep your rabbit in the house rather than outdoors. Rabbits are intelligent, social animals who need affection, and they can become wonderful companion animals if given a chance to interact with their human families.
The benefits of spay and neuter
Although most rabbits will use a litterbox, hormones may cause unneutered males and unspayed females to “mark territory.” Spaying or neutering your rabbit improves litterbox habits, lessens chewing behavior, decreases territorial aggression, and gives your rabbit a happier, longer life. Have your rabbit neutered between ages 3 1/2 to 6 months, depending on sexual maturity, by an experienced rabbit veterinarian. For rabbits more than 2 years old, get a veterinary checkup first.
Housetraining
Rabbits may have free run of the home. However, it’s best for most--and necessary for some--to start with a cage. To make cage time learning time, fasten a litterbox in the corner of the cage that your rabbit chooses for a “bathroom.” As soon as he uses the box consistently, you can give him some freedom. Place one or more large litterboxes in corners of the running area outside the cage. Use only positive reinforcement (treats and praise)--never punishment.
Bunny-proofing
Bunny-proofing your home is part of living with a house rabbit. It is natural for rabbits to chew on furniture, rugs, drapes, and, most deadly of all, electrical cords. Cords must be concealed so that the rabbit cannot reach them. Exposed cords can be encased in vinyl tubing (found at hardware stores). By splitting the tubing lengthwise with a utility knife the cord can be pushed inside it. Give your rabbit enough attention, safe chewables, and toys, so that she is distracted from chewing furniture and rugs. A cardboard box stuffed with hay makes an inexpensive playbox. Young rabbits (under a year) are more inclined to mischief and require more confinement and/or bunny-proofing than mature rabbits.
House rabbits and other animals
House rabbits and indoor cats can get along fine, as do rabbits and well-mannered dogs. Dogs should be trained to respond to commands before being trusted with a free-running rabbit, and supervision is needed to control a dog’s playful impulses (this is especially true for puppies). Adding a second rabbit is easiest if the rabbits are neutered adults of opposite sexes, and they are introduced for short periods in an area unfamiliar to both rabbits.

Jumping for joy!
You might think fleas are only a problem in the warmer months, and it is true they are more of a problem in the summer, but fleas are around all year long. So how do pets get fleas and what do you do about them? How does my pet get fleas?
Why protect against fleas?
There are many options out there available, including injections, spot-on treatments, and now in a chewable treat. These work in different ways, some killing fleas almost instantly and others rendering the flea infertile so they can’t multiply. It is also necessary to take the pet’s lifestyle and flea control history into consideration when choosing the right product for your pet. Your Veterinary Surgeons are the forerunners in knowledge of the latest thinking on flea control and access to the most up to date and effective products, contact them to get professional advice.
How do I protect against fleas?
What do I do if my pet gets fleas?
Contrary to popular belief, most flea infestations are NOT acquired from other pets. Fleas can jump onto your pet from any contaminated environment; in public parks, wooded areas, on beaches or even in your own garden. Fleas can make you and your pet miserable and can pose a serious threat to your pet’s health. Fleas cause severe discomfort causing the animal to scratch, chew and bite themselves potentially causing harm in the process. They can also cause serious skin conditions, anaemia and transmit tapeworm infection. Controlling fleas is a challenge, particularly in multi-pet households and once fleas have taken hold in a home it can take 3 months to eradicate them. The best way to control fleas is to deny them the opportunity to survive and breed on all household pets with regular preventative treatments.
Stage 1: Treat ALL your pet with a fast-acting flea product. Stage 2: Treat your environment. Use a suitable insecticide in the house and hot wash all pet’s bedding and blankets. Please remember that it can take time to eliminate a flea burden.
Facts about fleas Just one flea can become 1,000 in only 21 days.
Fleas can lay up to 1,500 eggs in a lifetime.
Within its first 24 hours on your pet, a flea will have mated and started to lay eggs (40-50 a day), infesting your entire home.
Female cat fleas can drink 15 times their weight in blood. Once fleas have taken hold, it can take 3 months to get rid of an infestation.
Flea larvae don’t like light so they move away from it, deep into carpets, cracks in flooring or any nook or cranny. Flea pupae can live for up to 1 year in homes before they hatch into adult fleas. 95% of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in beds, rugs, carpets and sofas - not on your pet.

I took up origami which combined with my love of jewellery and flowers resulted in my unique range of origami jewellery. I fold and varnish all pieces myself and also make recycled book jewellery. In 2017 I was one of the winners of Theo Paphitis’s, Small Business Sunday competition. Sadly my arthritis and other problems resulted in early retirement from teaching, but my jewellery making businesses have given me a new passion and self-confidence and provide wonderful physical and emotional therapy. Last year my daughter and I set up Glover and Greenwood Pearls, to share our passion for pearls. We only use genuine freshwater cultured pearls in our designs and make all the pieces ourselves, offering everything from contemporary designs, to traditional hand knotted necklaces. Now happily living in Yaxley I have the luxury of a purposebuilt studio which enables me to offer a fully bespoke service to customers as well as my ready to wear items. In addition to selling online and at markets, a selection can be found at The Enchanted Plaza. /gloverandgreenwood www.gloverandgreenwood.com

Working from home claim tax relief for your expenses by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
Dash Cams The dashboard camera, or dash cam, has become increasingly popular recently. So, should you think about buying one? By Tom Hancock A dash cam is a special camera that is mounted on a car dashboard for the purpose of recording sounds and images while you’re driving.
But why might you want one?
First-hand evidence in case of a car accident - This is the main reason why people invest in one. If you are involved in a collision you can prove that it was not your fault by submitting the camera footage as evidence. It’s a compelling reason for buying one. Reporting a dangerous driver - Sometimes you see a driver do something so reckless and irresponsible right in front of you that you fear for the safety of other road-users. Reporting that person becomes much easier with evidence. In the US there are special channels for reporting dangerous drivers, with the aim of making roads safer for everyone. It is probable that the UK will follow suit. Extra insurance for parents - We worry when our teens first start to borrow the car that they may not stick to the rules of the road. Knowing that there is a dash cam monitoring their driving behaviour is an extra incentive for them to pay attention, or they might not be trusted to take the car out again! Prevention of insurance claim scams - Insurance fraud is a growing problem with vehicles. Some drivers purposely cause minor car accidents in order to put the blame on the other party, so they can extort money from the victim. The victim has no way of proving their innocence, so these people also fake injuries in order to collect the insurance money from their insurance companies. A dash cam will at least allow you to prove that you were not at fault in such a case.
It keeps an eye on your car while you are not in it! - Have you ever returned to your car in a car park to find it’s been scratched? Or are you sure the neighbour’s children are scraping their bikes along the side of your vehicle when they squeeze past on the drive? A well-installed dash camera can efficiently record such events because most can be set to record even when the car engine isn’t running. Some can even send all the data to your laptop or smart phone remotely, giving you peace of mind. Because the best camera is the one you have with you It’s not all about the car! Check out online videos of dash cams capturing unexpected phenomena. A family of ducks stopping traffic in Birmingham, a plane crashing right in front of a guy driving down a highway, and one Russian car driver’s dash camera recorded an enormous meteor that flew over Russia. The clip ended up being viewed millions of times on YouTube! Dash cams are set to become as necessary an addition to our driving life as sat-navs. If you don’t already have one, perhaps you should think about it.

An increasing number of employees work from home some or all of the time. Where they do so, they may be able to claim tax relief for the costs that they incur from working at home, regardless of whether their employer meets those costs Nature of expenses Where an employee works from home, they can claim tax relief for the extra costs that are incurred as a result of working from home. This may include the cost of phone calls from the landline, the costs of electricity and gas to heat and light the workspace, power the computer, and the cost of cleaning the workspace.
Wholly, exclusively and necessarily incurred The rules on claiming tax relief for employment are strict; relief is only available for those expenses incurred wholly, exclusively and necessarily in the performance of the duties of the employment. This is a difficult test to meet.
Mixed business and private use Tax relief is not available for expenses that have both a work and a private element. This may prevent a deduction for, say, the cost of broadband which is used for both by the family for private use and also for work use. Likewise, no deduction for rent would be permitted unless a room was used exclusively for work, in which case a proportionate amount could be claimed.
Voluntarily working at home To be allowed to claim tax relief for additional expenses incurred as a result of working from home, the employee must be required to work from home, rather than doing so voluntarily. Under the letter of the law, the employee should be working at home because the duties of the employment demand it, rather than as a matter of personal choice. However, from a practical perspective, if the employee’s contract requires that the employee works from home, either part time or on specified days or when required to do by the needs of the job, tax relief should be forthcoming.
Employer meets the expenses Many employees will be able to reclaim the additional costs of working from home from their employer. If the expenses are such that the employee would be eligible for tax relief, the tax exemption for paid and reimbursed expenses comes into play and the employer and employee can both ignore the reimbursement for tax purposes – there is no tax to pay and nothing to report.
Keep it simple To avoid the need to keep records and work out the additional costs of working from home, employers can pay a tax-free allowance of £4 per week (£18 per month) to employees who work from home. The amount is the same regardless of whether the employee works at home one day per week or five days a week. It may be possible to pay a higher amount if this is agreed with HMRC. If you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.

postal fraud
Any size, any style, made to order.
A new crackdown on scammers has been launched across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough with the aim of making the county scam-free –and Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting it!
32 Market Street, Whittlesey, Peterborough PE7 1BD
The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP) includes Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. CAPASP is committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal to online fraud, to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders. Over the next few months, we will be looking in more detail at these scams and the warning signs which could prevent you from parting with your hard earned cash. So, postal scams … what are they are how can we spot the signals? An official looking letter drops through the door – you open it and to your delight and amazement you have won a substantial amount of cash in a prize draw, or have been left a large sum in a Will. The letter instructs you to share your personal and bank details so that the money can be paid directly into your account. What do you do? That glossy catalogue landing on the doormat is selling ‘miracle’ diet supplements, and that oh so accurate letter from the experienced clairvoyant has got your first personal reading spot on, but you need to pay for a follow up. What do you do? All these seem too good to be true – free money, a better future and a new, improved you! That’s because they are; in fact these are some of the clever postal scams currently causing misery to people locally and further afield.
The correspondence will look ‘official’ – cleverly designed to fool the recipient; often with lots of attention to detail. If you aren’t expecting to receive postal notification of the nature, some telltale signs are: Requests are made for money first before getting prize Use of the customer’s first name to make the letter look personal The letter is written to put people under pressure to reply PO Boxes are used instead of full postal address Too good to be true offers They are created to look dazzling A director’s name, picture and signature is used to make it look official Stamps are used to make it look official Fake testimonials or money back guarantees are often used to make offer seem genuine The letter often asks the recipient to keep their winnings a secret
