Did you know that March, the third month of the year, was named after the Roman god of war, Mars. Traditionally, this was the time of year to resume military campaigns that had been interrupted by winter. It is also the month that we celebrate Mother's Day, so don't forget to get your gifts in early and if you are looking for an afternoon tea delivered or gift ideas check out pages 5 and 11.

N is for Needle Felting, a new craft for us and we made some weird and some wonderful things as well incurring a few needle injuries!

U is for Unusual Garden Features which were very cleverly illustrated by the speaker's cartoon drawings.

O is for Oliver Cromwell, love him or hate him he was a very interesting man and Stuart Orme the curator of the Cromwell Museum knows his subject so well.

V is for Violets (African) and we had a lovely trip to the African Violet Centre near Kings Lynn one year followed by a meal.

P is for Paper Folding and as our meeting was just before Christmas we made trees from old books which we used in the Christmas Tree Festival at St Peter's Church. They were surprisingly effective and received many favourable comments.

Hopefully the Covid-19 vaccination is progressing, and we can see a way forward out of the current Lockdown. WI news is a little quiet at the moment, members are still busy knitting and sewing, our monthly e-cards are being well received by our members as a timely reminder we are still here and still thriving. Our knitted squares collection was recently put together and made into lovely blankets for residents of Olivemede Care Home in Yaxley. These have been delivered safely and I am sure residents will find them very useful during our cold snap of weather. Once again, as before, we now just wait for the Covid situation to improve, so stay safe everyone. Anyone wishing to contact us, e-mail WIholmevillage@gmail.com

Q is for Quilling an old craft that made a comeback and what lovely pictures and cards can be made from those little scrolls of paper. R is for Rounders, one year the Federation organised a competition which we entered, we weren't very good but had lots of fun! S is for Shoe Boxes on which our speaker spoke of the delight experienced when received by children in countries such as Bosnia. On hearing her talk several members then did boxes for the next Christmas delivery. T is for Toy Boys, no not how to find one but how to make sure they don't inherit all your goodies when you die!

W is for Wimbledon Memories of an Umpire and even if you are not a tennis fan his talk was both fascinating and humorous. X is for our Xmas Meeting where we usually have a buffet followed by entertainment such as magic or music of various kinds and of course exchange our Xmas Cards. Y is for Yeast used by Hambledon Bakery in their delicious bread and cakes which they so generously donated to us. We were told of the principles the bakery is run on and the speakers' lives before joining the bakery, one of them having worked at 10 Downing Street & Chequers. Z is for ? well we haven't had any visits from Zebras or speakers from Zanzibar so I would have to say that Z is for the Zest with which we approach our W I activities. Keep safe ladies and one day we will be able to restart our meetings.

Mother's Day

yaxleyhub

Every mum deserves to be pampered occasionally and there is no better opportunity to do this than on Mother's Day. Mother's Day 2021 in the UK falls on 14 March, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to plan something special for your beloved mother. Of course, if forward planning is not your strong point then there are plenty of ways to sort out a last minute gift or treat as well, but beware due to restrictions last minute might not be so easy this year. Flowers

As old a tradition as Mother's Day itself, but always a winner. What woman doesn’t love getting flowers to spruce up her home and make her feel special? Try to avoid getting the last wilting bunch from the petrol station and instead order a specially-made bunch in advance from Le Fleur Boutique who are based in Yaxley, give Chelsea a call on 07821-558346 If you know her favourite flowers or favourite colours then make sure they are included, as such extra attention to detail will make your mum feel special. For more information see their advert on page 21. Unusual Gifts The Enchanted Plaza has lots of unusual gifts and you will be supporting local business, so if you are looking for a different type of gift give them a call. The Enchanted Plaza are in the Broadway Shopping Centre 01733 241200 more information see their advert on page 5. Afternoon Tea delivered Bottle of chilled Prosecco or a cup of Earl Grey tea could go down well with a afternoon treat from two fantastic places, Dinner by Daniel and Cafe Nostra and are both offering the perfect Mother's Day afternoon prices: £15 per person, please see their adverts on page 11.

New Neighbourhood Sergeant I am Dominic Carminati, the new neighbourhood Sergeant for Huntingdon, including Yaxley. Since I joined the team a few months ago I have had the pleasure of meeting and speaking to many of the residents, councillors and local businesses. We are aware of some of the amazing work being conducted by the Social Echo and look forward to seeing their projects unfold – an exciting time for Yaxley and projects we are looking to support. As a result of our conversations and from scanning incidents I am aware that anti-social behaviour, speeding and drug dealing are all areas of concerns for residents.

What the census is The census is a survey that happens every 10 years and gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales. The census is unique. There’s simply nothing else that gives so much detail about us and the society we live in. All kinds of organisations, from local authorities to charities, use the information to help provide the services we all need, including transport, education and healthcare. Without the census, it would be much more difficult to do this. By taking part, you’ll be helping make sure you and your community get the services needed now and in the future. Past, present and future The first census was in 1801 and the most recent in 2011. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) runs the census in England Wales and the next one will happen on Sunday 21 March 2021. To prepare for it, we held a census rehearsal in 2019 to check our processes, systems and services were running smoothly ahead of the real thing. Between censuses We also need your elp between each census. At the ONS, we rely on ongoing surveys to provide detailed, up-to-date information about changes to society. To make sure that we represent everyone, we ask people to take part in these surveys. We carry out interviews in person, by phone or online. These surveys do not stop while the census takes place. To find out more about the types of surveys we run throughout the year, visit www.ons.gov.uk/surveys

inspire ST PETER'S CHURCH

YAXLEY METHODIST CHAPEL - THE DASH

Main Street (opposite Keepsakes)

Dear Friends, My nephew was asked recently as part of his home-schooling to write a poem about daffodils. They had been looking at Wordsworth’s poem – I wandered lonely as a cloud which talks about the golden daffodils. My Nephew was not thrilled with the prospect of writing a poem, so my sister suggested an anti-daffodil poem and this started friends and family joining in: I wandered lonely as a snail, that creeps so low o’er hill and vale, When all at once I saw my lunch, of daffodils – a lovely bunch. I ate them all up – what a munch, and finished with a mighty crunch. They taste much better than they smell, which probably is just as well!

We have had so many challenges in the last year, it was Mothering Sunday last year when we moved out of our church building and online for worship and we won’t be back in the church building until at least 28 March this year. We have only been back in the church building for a few weeks in between. On this Mothering Sunday (14 March) Come and pick up a plant from the Churchyard between 9am and 11am to give away to someone special. A bit of Spring! I have seen posts of Facebook talking about the joy of March – longer days, daffodils, bulbs, hopefully warmer! I went out for a walk this week and intentionally looked for the beauty around us and it was not hard to find.

We are in the season of Lent in the church where we remember Jesus going into the O daffodil you smelly flower, wilderness for 40 days and nights. It is the I detest you more each passing hour, time when Christians may give up something. Your scent gets stronger as your colour fades, It is a period of preparation for Holy Week and the yellow goes a lighter shade. Easter when we remember Jesus dying on the Your trumpet droops before too long, cross. This is not where it stops for Christians and really makes an awful pong as we look to the hope of Easter Sunday as I ask myself "What did Wordsworth see, Jesus rose again. There is hope all around us within a flower that smells like wee?" in the vaccine, in the kindness of others, in the Hopefully they gave you a smile, they did make beauty of Spring and even in the daffodil! me laugh. I pray that you can see the blessings around Now I have to admit I was not happy at an antius in this season. daffodil poem as these are my very favourite flowers, they brighten up any space and the joy With every blessing, of having my first vase of daffodils in the house Rev Sarah – yaxleyvicar@gmail.com 01733 248690/07498 230858 this year was great.

While walking around the cemetery recently after visiting my Parent's resting place I enjoyed the Peace and the bright colours of the flowers. With more people at home now there seem to be more flowers than usual. Looking at the inscriptions on the stones we can see that we are remembered by two notable dates, our birth date and the date we departed this earth. Then a young man mentioned to me that he thought about the dash in-between. I hadn't thought about this. Have you? This tiny line represents their life on earth. Did they and do we make the most of our time on earth? I found a poem on the internet written in 1996 by Linda Ellis entitled ‘The Dash’. It is often read at Funerals, Graduations and other life events where accomplishments and well lived lives are celebrated. When Captain Sir Tom Moore passed away in February we learnt so much about his life. He achieved so much in his 100 years. He used his talents well and we saw how much his family loved him and we saw for ourselves the twinkle in his eyes. He obviously had a sense of humour. The Prime Minister said that Captain Tom had a long life well lived! Will people say we lived our life well? Time passes so quickly. What a waste of precious time it is to be feeling impatient, aggravated, annoyed or to hold a grudge. How much better to use our time being a true friend, showing kindness and love, and encouraging others and maybe someone will remember us and say our life was well lived. Until we can meet again in the Chapel our Services are still being held on Sunday mornings at 10.30 am and between 8.30 and 9am during the week on the Peterborough Methodist Circuit Facebook page and on You Tube. It would be lovely to meet you there. Email: yaxleymc@gmail.com Yaxley Facebook Peterborough Circuit Facebook

Covid-19 National Vaccination Programme This is the biggest vaccination programme the NHS has every undertaken

Upskill for Brain Health Learning new skills has all kinds of fringe benefits Lots of us began 2021 with the ambition to learn a new skill: beginner’s computer programming, conversational Italian, or how to paint with watercolours maybe. We learn new skills for many reasons. Perhaps we need to improve our computer literacy to gain a promotion, or Italian so we can speak to our new in-laws, or we've always fancied learning to paint. Learning is fun but its benefits go way beyond the actual skill learned, and the skill is irrelevant, whether it's crochet or advanced mathematics, the extra benefits are the same. Positive brain changes The white matter in our brain is comprised of nerve fibres covered in a fatty sheath called myelin. It is involved in learning and co-ordination of communication between different brain regions. The more we practice a new skill the more our white matter increases in density, which helps us when we learn other new skills. Increased learning speed When brain neurons are stimulated, more neural pathways are formed and the faster our brains process new information. It’s as if 'learning' is a muscle which strengthens as its exercised. Interconnections When we learn a new skill our brains draw on information and skills we already possess, and we build on that existing knowledge. But a wide knowledge base also makes it easier for us to learn more new skills. Increased interestingness! (Yes, it's a real word!) Well-rounded individuals tend to find it easier to relate to others because a wider knowledge base makes it easier to find things in common and thus make friends. Beat boredom Repetition can quickly become monotonous. Following the same routine every night, 'supper, bath, TV, bed' makes it easy to become bored. Learning new skills breaks the cycle of monotony and gives our brain something to do. Increased adaptability Learning new accomplishments physically alters our brains in such a way that our outlook and perceptions change. These alterations make it easier for us to adapt to sudden life changes, like a global pandemic for instance! Adapting to change is a skill, and the more varied our life experiences are, the easier it is to draw on them and adjust. Prevent cognitive decline Learning origami doesn’t mean we won’t get dementia. There are many types of dementia and the causes are nuanced. But there are many studies which suggest that people who learn new skills are less likely to experience cognitive decline including dementia. Mental decline is linked to demyelination of our brain. People who actively learn new skills are not giving their brains a chance to demyelinate, and their neural pathways are primed to create workarounds if some area of the brain does begin to fail. The key seems to be to learn proficiencies outside of our comfort zone, so if you are a knitter, don't choose to learn crochet, which is similar, choose Russian, or salsa dancing, or the ukulele instead, subjects which push you out of your comfort zone, but (importantly) which you actually want to learn and will enjoy. Keep exercising that brain! By Kate McCarthy

The NHS is well-used to delivering millions of vaccines a year, and is moving quickly to roll out this vaccine to those who need it, but it’s important that we remember this will be a marathon, not a sprint. The large increase in cases hospitals are seeing and the emergence of a new variant of the virus shows that we cannot let our guard down now. NHS staff are doing an incredible job to deliver what it is the largest vaccination programme in our history, at the same time as continuing to be there for everyone who needs care.

The public have an important part to play to help them do this: Please don’t contact the NHS to seek a vaccine, we will contact you When we do contact you, please attend your booked appointment Please continue to follow all the guidance to control the virus and save lives

The new medical advice is the second dose of the vaccine remains effective when given up to 12 weeks after the first dose, and should be given towards the end of this 12 week period. Two doses of the vaccine are still needed to get the best protection from the virus, but significant protection is still provided 22 days after the first dose. We will contact you to arrange your first and or second vaccination if eligible. Please continue to wear face coverings where required and adhere to social distancing guidelines even after you have received your vaccine. This is very important. Visit our website for the most up to date information www.yaxleygp.nhs.uk/

Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal 1–31 March 2021 Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal has been raising awareness and funds since 1986. Every March, millions of people across the UK show their support for our work, simply by giving a donation to wear a daffodil pin. Without this generosity, thousands of families across the UK wouldn’t be able to make the most of the precious time they have left together. Visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil for more information

No Smoking Day No Smoking Day is an annual health awareness day in the United Kingdom which is intended to help smokers who want to quit smoking. The first No Smoking Day was on Ash Wednesday in 1984, and it now takes place on the second Wednesday in March. Pet Dental Care Tips Just like humans, pet's teeth need regular care and attention to keep them healthy, so we thought we’d talk a little bit about pet dental care to help you keep your pets teeth in tip top condition. Which pets suffer with dental problems? Smaller breeds of dogs are more prone to require dental assistance in the form of veterinary cleaning than larger breeds due to their small, close together teeth. This also makes cats equally likely to need a little bit of expert help every now and again. However, any pet with teeth can have dental issues regardless of size or breed. The good news though is that nowadays we can do many things to encourage healthy teeth and gums for our pet cats, dogs, rabbits and even other small furries. Brushing Your Pet's Teeth If your pet will let you, daily brushing is the best way to prevent dental disease. Some pets will quite happily tolerate having their teeth brushed regularly, especially if it has been introduced when they are young, however many are not so compliant. If your pet will let you brush their teeth, ensure you use pet specific toothpaste as human toothpaste for example contains fluoride which is toxic to dogs. For an in depth guide on how to brush a dogs teeth visit www.pedigree.com/dentalcare/ Food, Treats & Toys If your pet experiences dental problems your Vets will be able to recommend suitable diets with specific teeth cleaning properties to help reduce the need for repeat treatment. Regularly providing dental treats can also help, as long as they are appropriate for your pets species, breed and size. Good quality dental treats are designed so that even if your pet devours them in seconds, your pet will have to chew them before they can swallow. It is the chewing of these treats that reduces tartar build up on teeth, so however rapidly they chew they will still get the benefit of having them. Provide toys with a variety of different textures and discourage the chewing of wood and sticks as this can cause damage to gums. Smelly Breath Bad breath in pets is often caused by the bad smelling bacteria that comes with gum disease, although it can also be an indicator of abscesses or kidney problems. Whilst there are products that will help mask the smell, to truly resolve the issue you should visit your Vets to find out what the underlying issue is and how to resolve it. Behaviour Toothache is a painful thing regardless of species, however without the evidence of a broken tooth or smelly breath, it is difficult for pets to tell us that this is the issue. Gum disease is equally painful and can lead to tooth loss. If your pet goes off their food or exhibits behaviour that is not normal for them, such as being antisocial or aggressive, it may be that they are experiencing pain and a trip to the Vets for further investigation of possible causes is required. Scale & Polish Plaque is both the cause of gum disease and reason for tartar build up. Once these are present the only way to get rid of them is for pets to have a scale and polish under general anaesthetic. This is a minor procedure with pets returning home the same day. WILDLIFE TRUST Mad March Hares

To observe a hare is such an exciting part of spring - like early morning bird song, or the first spring flowers, seeing hares racing around is a sign that longer, warmer days are coming, and the world is waking up after winter. Naturally secretive animals, partly by necessity, dawn or dusk are the best times to spot them, and anywhere around The Wildlife Trust's Great Fen is a good place to spot them with a mixed habitat of grassland with nearby farmed fields – ideal for hares.

Living in very exposed places, rather than creating burrows, they make a small depression in the ground among long grass, known as a form, spending most of the day on or near the form, moving out to feed in the open at night. Though generally solitary, hares sometimes band into loose groups when feeding, relying all the time on acute senses, with the ability to run at speeds of up to 70kph (45mph) to evade predators. Breeding takes place between February and September and a female can rear three or four litters a year, each usually of two to four young. The young, leverets, are born

How are your worms?

With days getting longer, lighter and warmer, getting outdoors for will become more and more appealing as we head into spring. The Wildlife Trust's 2021 Wildlife Photography Competition is now open for entries with the theme of 'celebrate the seasons' this year. Photographs need to be taken of wildlife and wild or urban places within the counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire; as usual 24 winning images will be chosen by an experienced judging panel and published in the Trust's 2022 calendar. First prize is £250 worth of optics, and second £150 worth of optics both from Opticron, with third prize £100 worth of equipment from Campkins Cameras. Closing date is Sunday 2 May. Get snapping!

Soft amber eyes, delicate dark-tipped long ears and elegant long back legs - brown hares are a real delight to encounter at any time of the year – and now is the ideal time to see them.

At this time of year the sight of hares boxing is an unforgettable experience, and the sparring forms an important part of the mating process. For many years it was wrongly assumed that boxing hares were rival males, or “jacks”, sparring to win the attention of a watching female, the “jill”. Now we know that they are a male and female, and that the boxing is actually a way for her to test his strength, persistence and commitment before deciding whether to mate with him - just one of the many unique qualities that make the hare such a fascinating animal.

fully furred with their eyes open and are left by the female in their own forms a few metres from their birth place. For the first four weeks of their lives, the leverets gather at sunset to be fed by the female just once a day, but other than this they receive no parental care. This avoids attracting predators to the young at a stage when they are most vulnerable, foxes being the chief predators of young hares. When it comes to legal protection hares have little - they are game animals managed by farmers and landowners, and numbers have declined substantially. Today’s modern farms are intensive and specialised, either growing crops like wheat and oilseed rape, or raising livestock for meat and dairy produce, whereas 100 years ago most farms were mixed enterprises, with a patchwork quilt of fields providing year-round grazing for hares as well as long crops for them to hide in. Modern cereal farms provide little or no food for hares in late summer and autumn, and livestock farms have few crops for them the hide in; modern farm machinery and pesticides also kill many hares. Britain’s hare population is estimated at around 700,000, a steady decline over the past few decades.

Not the kind of question you ask a stranger in the street, but we have just come through a really wet winter with high levels of flooding across the city and much of the land suffering from waterlogging. Those who have ventured out in this wet weather may well have noticed the phenomena of literally hundreds of earthworms motionless on paths adjacent to water logged grassland. The more observant amongst us may also have noticed the ease with which birds have bn able to pluck earthworms from their burrows. Great news for birds who have been able to keep well fed but bad news for earthworms. So why has this been happening? Well as the soil becomes saturated all the little air pockets within disappear and worms are forced to the surface to be able to breathe. Also because the soil is muddy and slippery their chaetae (worm feet if you like) can get no grip in their burrows when a bird starts

to pull on them and the come out like a champagne cork rather than a standard wine cork. Why does any of this matter? Well earthworms are incredibly important for maintaining the structure and health of our soils taking nutrients down to the roots aerating the soil and crating the conditions that mitigate against flooding. So the potential mass loss of earthworms to flooding and waterlogging can prove a double whammy as it will increase the likelihood of future waterlogging.

Battle of Britain

Holme Church of England Primary Academy

Our fantastic school family Mrs Thomas (Head of School)

We are a small village primary school, just outside of Yaxley. We pride ourselves on working in partnership with families and the local community. I thought this month I’d take the time to share our fantastic school family. Our staff continue to work tirelessly to provide a quality education for both the children in school and the pupils at home. As well as daily live sessions for Maths and English , we are still teaching Art, History, Geography, Religious Education and Personal Social and Health Education remotely. We are so grateful to our families who are working alongside us to ‘teach’ their children. Last month the families treated the whole staff to an afternoon tea and two hampers of chocolate treats. The staff were thrilled! Over the past month we have: • Held our PTA meeting remotely and welcomed lots of new members • Handed out devices and resources to support home learning • Spent some of the PTA’s donated ‘Covid Fund’ on technology to support remote learning and picture books to support mental health. • Ran an online workshop for families on developing resilience in young people • Set up an online forum for parents to chat with one another This month we are all learning to skip! We have purchased a skipping rope for each child and asked our friends at Youth Dreams Project to prepare 10 videos to support the children learning to skip. Our Vicar the Rev. Dyball has also been supporting us by creating some imaginative Collective Worship sessions in the world of Minecraft. The children at home are enjoying these. We continue to be small but mighty! We do have spaces in a few of our year groups. If you are interested in joining this community do contact the school office for details. School office : 01487 830342 www.holme.cambs.sch.uk

To mark the end of our unit of work on the Battle of Britain, year 6 have completed non-chronological reports on the subject. They wrote the texts as if they were experts, giving their knowledge of the subject. Pupils broke it down into important subheadings to allow the reader the freedom to pick and choose which part of the report they wanted to read first. Appropriate pictures and diagrams illustrated the work and made for really striking pieces of work. We are so proud of them.

We have moved on to a new topic this term about Ancient Greece. In English we have started work on writing a balanced argument. Year 6 are going to complete this unit writing a balanced argument about whether the Elgin Marbles should be returned to Greece!

Folksworth Pre-school

Too cool for little school.... It’s been a busy term so far at Folksworth Preschool but we are very excited to share some news with you. There has been an amazing amount of work done by our committee and Folksworth Parish Council members in order to support our Preschool’s development plan, and now we have a wonderful new learning environment. We have a whole new look within Preschool with new mobile shelving units and low level tables. This is to give the children more independent choice but also to help create cosy learning areas with the hall. Not only do we have new equipment to help stimulate their early years learning, we now have an increased amount of children attending, this means new faces and a chance to showcase what we do and why we do it with the wider community. For the children to have a wider group of friends. To put this into context, the following quotes are from our new families: “I know it’s only been a few weeks but we have been made to feel so welcome. I love that there’s different toys out on a day basis and the “ themed corners” D is always excited when he tells me he is going to little school” “As a new parent I’d just like to say how wonderful the preschool is, and I think one

of the things that make you special is the communication you have between the staff/ parents/ children and the relationship you have built. L looks forward to his school days. It’s so reassuring to know he’s happy and settle often only a short period of time.” Our approach to an enabling learning environment means we effectively have another member of staff who’s invisible. The children have new things to explore and interact with daily. This could be the China dishes in the home area to the fresh flowers used to make petal perfume. This ever changing presentation gives the children the chance for new stimulation, challenging the children to appreciate what’s different and why. This approach also gives the staff a chance to meet every children’s individual needs by tapping into what fascinates them in order to motivate and establish independent enquires. So a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us. Our next project is the outside learning environment aka the garden.

Cultural capital

Some fabulous sustained writing by Henry F.

A ‘Wellbeing Package’ out for delivery, full of goodies and activities.

Some well thought through maths by Jessica B.

We are so proud of all our children both at home and at school. The current situation is difficult for everyone, especially hard for children to understand. We are so lucky at Yaxley Infant School that our families are so supportive and interactive with us. We are especially proud of our families that are staying home and working so hard with home learning at this time, including all the new-found ‘teachers and teaching assistants’ we’ve recruited – yes parents we mean you and all your newly honed skills! It is such a pleasure to see some of the children’s home learning that families share with us through Tapestry. Here is some of the wonderful work they have done… We are very grateful and proud that we have been accepted for a grant from the local business BGL where we have been given £1500 to buy laptops for our children to help support home learning. This is a wonderful opportunity to support our families now and in the future. At YIS we believe that reading and sharing books is one of the most important things you can do to help children’s learning and

development. If you’re finding it difficult to get through the home learning and motivate your little ones, even just reading/sharing a book each day will have a positive impact. To help support this we have set up a book swap library at the entrance to our school gate during school hours. Families can come and choose a book from our range of fiction/non-fiction and can borrow them for some family reading time. We love to think of our children and families as part of our ‘school family’ and want everyone at home to know we are missing them and thinking of them every day. We can’t wait for the day we can fully open our doors again in a safe way so decided to show our little ones that we miss them. Our ‘delivery team’ dropped off some ‘Wellbeing Packages’ to each of our home learning children, filled with goodies and things to keep them entertained. The hot-chocolate and marshmallows were enjoyed whilst listening to story-time and a few games to keep the children active and entertained.

For early years this means that each child arrives at the setting with a number of experiences and ideas based on their own personal circumstances. Understandably this new term has provoked plenty of discussion and question. As we value our families and their children we are sharing what we call ‘culture boxes’. The children are bringing in boxes they decorated and filled over the Christmas period. These have been filled with their favourite things, pictures of their families, their favourite food, songs etc. This promotes language and builds self-confidence and self-esteem, sharing their ‘wow’ moments and enabling us to build on their experiences here at Stretton Pre-School. We have availability from 2 years until school age, at the Main Street and Fourfields site. Are you eligible for two year funding / extended funding? 4 CBD

created to nurture your mind, body & soul

REASONS

TO TAKE

CBD has grown hugely in popularity in the past couple of years and can be found in health food shops, chemists and high street retailers. Research shows that it’s set to explode over the next 5 years.

With so many people using CBD supplements daily, it’s important to ensure that you buy from a safe, certified CBD retailer with full and transparent lab reports.

ANXIETY CBD has recently captured spotlight as an alternative or complementary treatment for anxiety. Research has shown that CBD impacts the endocannabinoid system which can influence serotonin levels.

FITNESS There is now clear evidence that CBD can provide health benefits and aids in improving fitness and recovery. So, many well known faces actively promote their use of CBD for this reason.

INFLAMMATION There is research to suggest that CBD reduces inflammation by affecting activity in the body’s endocannabinoid receptors.

SLEEP Over the last few years, CBD has emerged as a increasingly popular natural treatment for insomnia. Studies are in early stages but already there are promising signs that CBD is an effective treatment for improving & enhancing sleep.

Healthy Bowels Nutritional Therapists always enquire about your bowel movement; its frequency, ease in passing, colour and even texture! Many of my clients aren’t sure if their stool is ‘healthy’ so we discuss these factors and refer to a chart with pictures! Here are some tips for bowel health:  Eat fibrous foods, a mixture of both soluble and insoluble fibre: porridge, wholegrains, cooked vegetables (root vegetables in particular), fruit, beans, pulses, nuts and seeds.

Monday afternoons and evenings Queens Park Sports Hall, Daimler Ave, Yaxley, PE7 3AU Call Bryan on 07960 167 910

 Drink enough hydrating fluid. This is particularly important if you are increasing fibre suddenly. Fluids will assist in moving fibre and nutrients along the digestive tract.  Drink apple or prune juice if you get constipated.  Take flax- add to soups, yogurts, smoothies.  Probiotics can be healthful if you experience constipation, diarrhoea (or a combination of the two), wind and bloating. These symptoms can be indications that your good gut bacteria is out of balance. Probiotics support growth and proliferation of ‘friendly’ flora, helping process toxins efficiently once again.  Aloe vera juice has a nourishing effect on the gut, supporting the production of digestive enzymes and health of beneficial bacteria, so food is broken down better and nutrients absorbed easier.  Regular exercise can help keep bowel movement regular.  Indeed, nothing effects the bowels like stress! If you think stress is a problem for you, address this alongside bowel health.  Think about if you could be intolerant to any foods and consider testing to support better bowel health.

homeandgarden Having always been a keen gardener, I co-founded an online gardening community to connect with new people and make friends that shared my plantaholic ways and fascination with everything nature. Whether I’ve had a window sill in a room, a balcony, small yard, or garden, I’ve always found challenging myself to grow as a way to, well, grow.

Trowel ... and error

By Rebecca Jackson

Having started out as a chef, I seized the opportunity of maternity leave to qualify as a clinical nutritionist, gardener, and medical herbalist. The rest, as they say, is history. We have a long history of turning to our greenfingers and dreams of self sufficiency in hard times. The first allotments were given to the poor during the industrial revolution and the dig for victory campaign in WW2 inspired a new generation of permaculture. Despite over 2000 garden centres having to close during lockdown last year, more of us than ever before looked to our gardens, allotments and green spaces for comfort, entertainment, and Instagram content. So, whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a lockdown aficionado or a nature loving newbie, we’ll be chatting all things wild and wonderful right here each month. Gardening can be approached from every angle. You can get caught up in the creativity, beauty and design; get lost in a world of taste and smell, or have a full-on geek fest with science and technology. So think outside, no box required!

Now that we’ve finally arrived in spring, there’s no better time to get started! Now is the perfect time to plant a wide range of edible, ornamental and medicinal plants. Here are my top 5 things to plant in March: B Peas There was no greater joy than when my pea loving two-year-old first picked a pea from our garden. The wide-eyed amazement that the green pod plucked from the plant popped open to show one of his favourite foods will be a moment I’ll remember forever. The unique pea flowers have a range of colours and make a fabulous climbing plant even in the smallest of spaces. Did you know that peas are one of the best sources of protein, vitamins and minerals? C Chillies With over 4000 varieties to choose from, everyone should have a go at growing at least one! The fruits pack a serious punch of flavour, and range in spice from mild to seriously hot! Chillies also have wonderful medicinal qualities, from being a potent anti-inflammatory and relief for cold, flu and viral illnesses, through to being a natural stimulant for dopamine release and the treatment of headaches and hangovers.

salt and pepper. It’s a stunning complement to any Summer meal. You’ll never look back to pre-packed salad bags again! E Soft Fruits Whatever your favourite, give it a grow! So many fruits can be grown in pots and hanging baskets as well as in the ground. Now is the time to plant strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries, currants, grapes, and blueberries. If you’re limited on space, why not try Fragaria vesca, known as alpine or wild strawberries? They fruit from June – October and work really well in hanging baskets or borders. If you want to try blueberries, you’ll need more than one plant for pollination and acidic (ericaceous) soil.

F Flowers Did you know that here in Britain we important 98% of our cut flowers? There’s little more satisfying than picking your own flowers to display Did you know that gardening burns the same indoors or gift to others. Summer bulbs like gladioli, D Salads You can eat like royalty over the summer number of calories as cycling? Burning an average lillies and crocosmia can be planted now, as well as from just one large planter. Lettuce, chard, radishes, of 160 calories per 30 minutes, that’s more than a range of annual and perennial plants. Foliage can spinach, rocket, mustard greens and herbs can dancing, running, skiing and aerobics! Not to be gained from so many different sources – young make for creative salad blends with many varieties mention the numerous health benefits, dubbed as shoots on trees, fragrant herbs and architectural available as ‘cut and come again’ to keep you fed all Summer long. Just pick, chop and toss in a dressing ‘Vitamin N’ on our physical, emotional, and spiritual plants like eucalyptus can make really lovely of olive oil with a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of wellbeing. displays. Time for a little spring cleaning!

You can’t beat a bit of spring cleaning. Our gardens and homes take a hammering in the colder months, so now’s the ideal time to banish the winter blues and get back out into the fresh air.

Here are 4 simple things you can do: B Sweep off your lawn, patio or deck. Jet wash your patio slabs and check your decking for any sign of wear or rot. Replace any damaged decking boards and treat them with a good quality decking oil. C Top up borders, driveways and paths with fresh aggregate. This doesn’t just look great but helps to keep the weeds down in summer as well. D Hire a skip for a weekend. Pull out dead plants and overgrown weeds, empty your sheds (and your loft while you’re at it) and start the spring as you mean to go on! E Check your fence panels for signs of wear, tear and wobble. Some of the windier months are still to come and, as the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure! Remember, a good old spring clean isn’t just good for the garden, it’s great for the mind too.

Farm

homeandgarden

from the

Farmer Tom & Lisa

Well what a winter that was! Wet (again), really wet, and with a chilly sting mid-February. I hope by the time you’re reading this the spring will be springing and we’ll be enjoying some warmth and sunshine.

March is an incredibly busy month on the farm. We sow most of the spring crops on our clay land (which doesn’t tolerate tractors until it has dried out properly), and there’s a rush to get this and other spring jobs done. In 2020 the ground dried out FAST, from too wet to sow on 22nd March, to too dry to sow and establish a decent crop on 6th April. That said, with our focus on soils in the recent years, our soils are improving, and with healthy soils comes the ability to hold and retain sufficient moisture without becoming waterlogged; but it’s a slow journey. Though some farmers have been welcoming the arrival of this year’s lambs since December, most lambs are born in March and April so that their mothers have the freshest, most nutritious spring grasses to graze when they’re giving milk to their offspring, and for many, these lambs are the key sign of spring. Please, please keep your dogs on a lead; there have been too many horrific tales of sheep killed this winter, even from lovely little Flossie, Rex, Chi-chi or [insert your pet name here] who would never hurt a fly. Those of us who observed daffodils this year as early as the end of January and dreamt of warmer weather will empathise with our friend, Jenevieve, who says ‘daffodils are liars’! Little did we know at the time, there was a lot more winter to come! Throughout March our wildlife will be celebrating spring, and it’s a busy time for them as well; nesting, foraging, and feeding their hungry young. In fact, the whole countryside is waking up at this time, and it’s a time of hope and expectation. My hope is that you’ll all stay safe, get your jab as soon as you can, and my expectation is for a much more fun, friendly, and fabulous 2021. In season this March, you can find cauliflower, kale, leeks, purple sprouting broccoli, salsify, spinach, spring onions, swedes, rhubarb (hurrah!), as well as British-produced meats, and a whole range of sustainable sea food including dab, sole, mussels, and oysters. Take care of yourselves, and thanks for supporting British farmers and food producers.

Spring is in the air – and with the green shoots of new beginnings comes a desire to tick off all those DIY jobs. But a word of warning before you pick up those power tools or reach for that repair kit, tackling jobs around the home or garden that you are not qualified to do can damage your health as well as your wealth! Each year over 200,000 people find themselves in A&E as a result of a DIY accident in the home or garden. These range from mishaps with power tools and lawnmowers, to falls from ladders and slip ups with knives and scalpels – according to RoSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Over-ambition and lack of knowledge are two of the biggest factors in DIY accidents causing death and injury. But as well as potentially damaging your health, you could be putting your property at risk if the DIY dream turns to disaster. Apparently, one in five of us hate doing DIY, but are happy to attempt jobs that may be out of our league in an attempt to save money. However, a bodge job could lead to double drama. Recent research reveals that, worryingly, 29 per cent of DIY-ers said they would attempt plumbing jobs, just under a quarter (24 per cent) would undertake electrical work while 13 per would try to fix the boiler or central heating system. However, for safety reasons, electrical, plumbing and gas work should be carried out by a registered professional. Tackling jobs you’re not qualified for could also invalidate your home insurance, leaving you liable for the cost of repairing any subsequent damage. Water damage is among the most common household claims. However, policies exclude damage which has occurred gradually or, damage which could have been avoided by regular maintenance – such as cleaning gutters of leaves. So, it’s important to keep on top of regular home maintenance jobs which could otherwise damage your property over time. The top 10 maintenance jobs in UK homes: 1 Servicing the boiler 3 Repairing cracked walls 3 Painting and repairing exterior paintwork 4 Fixing a damp problem 5 Replacing boundary fences or walls 6 Blocked or damaged gutters 7 Repairing damaged brickwork or mortar 8 Fitting smoke or carbon monoxide detectors 9 Replacing sealant around baths and showers or cracked shower trays or baths 10 Updating electrical wiring. So, if you are unqualified, unsure or inexperienced – the message is simple ‘leave it to the professionals’.
