I grew up in a very urban (and horrible) town. As such I grew up as quite a fan of nature and the countryside, mainly because there wasn’t any where I lived. Since moving to Yaxley, it has all been very exciting for me to see the amount of wildlife that exists just on my doorstep – it’s very cool to see deer, rabbits, mice and all manner of other adorable little creatures living their lives around us. Recently though, I have learned about pheasants. What have I learned about pheasants? I’ve learned that they’re stupid. Fact number one about pheasants – they are basically a very slightly more aerodynamic version of a chicken. They are a big, squidgy, round lump of bird that are barely capable of flight. But they are capable of flight. This leads me to fact number two about pheasants – whilst they can fly, they can only manage a cruising altitude of about five feet off the ground. I learned all these interesting facts whilst driving home, where one of these stupid birds flew face first into my windscreen. They are the exception to the theory of evolution that proves the rule; they can fly, but not high or far enough
to get away from any predator of substance. They live in the countryside, but spend their whole lives hanging around next to roads and (ironically) playing chicken. They really are the avian equivalent of one of those YouTube videos of free runners falling off of walls. The opposite of the genetic cul-de-sac that is the pheasant, are those beautiful red kites that are now a regular sight above us. For reasons that are unclear, I remember red kites being endangered when I was a child, so it’s always a little bit exciting to see one; it’s good to know we’re not destroying absolutely everything in the world. Yet even now I hear people moaning about them – of all the things to complain about - people don’t seem to like them. To those people who apparently only exist to try and make the world grey and boring, stop being so dull and appreciate the joys of nature. If you really don’t like it, go and live in a block of flats somewhere and let someone else enjoy it.
Yaxley WI As we hadn't held our April meeting at the time of going to press, a report will be in next month's Gazette but despite this, members have had a busy time. In March, some members went to London to see ‘The Girls’ musical which was excellent entertainment. Later in the month, others went to the WI Show at Alexandra Palace and had a great time looking at the various stalls displaying products from clothes, to travel, to wines - the last being particularly enjoyable! Yesterday, several members attended the Annual Federation Day at St Ives, where it is always nice to meet up with other members across the Federation. The main speaker of the day was the Reverend, Richard Coles, who gave a very humorous talk on his life from his childhood in Northamptonshire, to his time as a member of The Communards pop group, to his ordination as a vicar. I think most of us could have listened to his stories for several hours more! On 11 May, we will be meeting as usual at The Lancaster Club, Main
St, Yaxley, at 7.30 when our speaker will be Chris Smith, talking about Canadian Indians. Visitors are always welcome and if you have difficulty with stairs there is a stairlift.
Holme WI We had a very interesting talk at this months meeting on the ‘Bobby scheme’. This is a scheme that helps older people who have had their homes broken into; they come around to chat and offer helpful advice. They also extend this to help people who need advice on how to protect their homes to stop them becoming victims to this personal and upsetting crime. We will be meeting next month on Thursday 4 of May, at 7.30pm at Holme village hall, come and join us!

Thank you! I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped with my recent "open house" to raise much needed funds for The Sue Ryder Hospice, Thorpe Hall, Peterborough. For everyone that baked cakes, donated money, raffle prizes and especially those that gave their time to help me on the day - I couldn't have done it without you. I decided to hold this fund raising event in memory of my late husband, Mick, to coincide with what would have been our Golden Wedding and with Sue Ryder being his favourite charity, it only seemed fitting. Thank you so much to everyone who came along on the day and so generously helped me raise a truly amazing sum of £1,180. With love and thanks, Val Barker, Broadway, Yaxley

Wildlife Trust celebration of Lovely Lattersey at 30! Family Open Day at Lattersey Nature Reserve, celebrating 30 years of Whittlesey’s only local nature reserve. Open to all: guided walks, wildlife trails, wildlife art and craft activities, face painting, willow weaving, wildlife quiz, refreshments and displays. This local nature reserve was once a quarry for brick clay and 'borrow' material used to build the local railway. The abandoned pits filled with water, providing a haven for the wildlife that was forced into the area as the surrounding fenland was drained and ploughed. A boardwalk explores the wetland - important for a variety
of wildlife including water voles, water shrews and insects, especially dragonflies, damselflies, rare beetles and moths. Sedges, rushes and other wetland plants abound. Twayblade and bee orchid can be found on the drier grassland areas. Dense scrub also provides food and shelter for birds such as woodcock, sparrowhawk and tawny owl.

Yaxley Parish Council Update Dogs Trust
The council is pleased to announce that the Dogs Trust are to be offering practical dog training classes and seminars on ownership on Fridays and Saturdays, commencing in May, at the Austin Hall and Queens Park. Please email www.dogstrustdogschool.org.uk for more information.
Free access to 3G pitch
Through the Easter school break the 3G pitch has been made available at certain times for children to enjoy a kick around. It is planned that similar sessions will be fun over the May half term and summer break. Thank you, Councillors Sue Butler, Jayne Lusted and Rodney Butcher, who have given up their time to supervise the sessions.
The Well Being Group
Following the loss of the Well Being Group’s meeting venue, Yaxley Parish Council have been able to support the continuation of this valuable group, giving them access to The Austin Hall on Tuesday mornings.
Huntingdonshire District Council Community Shop
We are disappointed to learn that the HDC community shop is to close in the near future. We are working with Hunts DC and Cambridgeshire CC to ensure as many services continue to be made available in the village.
Vandalism
Tree Felling
A message from your local Policing Team We have received a number of complaints regarding parking issues around Yaxley
It’s perplexing why people look to damage or destroy property in the village, especially play equipment - even more when people seem to look the other way and not report these offenders. So far this year, it has cost YOU approximately £2500, not including the loss of pitch fees and ongoing insurance price increase due to claims. This has included damage to the pitches, goal posts, the infant play area sawn and an attempt to set fire to the skate park. If you see any anti social behaviour, help by reporting directly to the police, then we may be able to recover some of these costs.
Litter
Complaints have been received about litter, especially in Middleton’s Rec. The council look to litter pick most days, but it seems to be getting worse. There are 6 bins in the Rec and the grounds team ended up with a further 10 bin liners full on a Monday morning and a similar number the following day. Please, if you are bringing waste, either take it home with you or place it in one of the bins.

Whilst it was seen as a sad decision to fell what are land mark trees in Yaxley, once felled, the extent of the internal decay could be seen. This was a clear indication that the correct action had been taken, following arboriculturalist’s advice.
Queen’s Park
As the football season comes to an end, we are to commence the maintenance programme advised by the FA, starting with spreading weed killer. Please do not let your dogs out on this field.
Outdoor Gym Equipment
We are currently looking to provide a fitness trail of outdoor gym equipment, initially for installation in Middleton’s Rec, but if deemed successful, will look for alternative areas to site similar equipment to encourage health and well-being within our village. An additional item could be an outdoor table tennis table for all to use.
Three of the most affected areas are: Landsdowne road, especially at school drop off times and outside the doctors surgery, particularly along the double yellow lines. There has also been concerns raised regarding vehicles parking along Queen Street on the verges and causing them to be churned up. This is a polite message to ask that consideration is taken when parking in any of these areas. You could receive a Fixed Penalty notice with a £30 fine. There has also been a number of reports in relation to anti-social behaviour around the shops in Maltings square, if you observe or you’re aware of individuals participating in this type of behaviour, you can advise us by calling 101. We would also like to offer some security advice. Please ensure windows and doors are locked when leaving your property. Keep valuables out of sight of an opportunist. Ensure sheds have locks on them and keep garages locked and secure. To contact us please call our non – emergency number 101 or in an Emergency always 999

Yaxley Methodist Chapel
St Peter’s Church I was recently watching an umpteenth re-run of Father Ted - the politically incorrect comedy about the life of two priests. (I should perhaps note that there is no similarity between what is depicted there and life here at The Vicarage!) Anyway, in this episode, the two main characters, Ted and Dougal, are on board a plane and about to take off. Ted, who doesn’t like flying says, “If God had intended people to fly, he would have built airports nearer to the cities!” Obviously, this is a satirical comment about how remote some airports are from the cities they serve. I’ve heard it argued that God is remote – “somewhere up there” - and isn’t near the people, but has left us alone to our own devices. That simply isn’t true. It’s one of the key reasons why Jesus came to live on earth, to walk with us and to show us that God was anything but remote. I often wish that St Peter’s Church was in the middle of Yaxley, rather than on the edge. I’ve wondered about the difference it might make if the church were physically right in the middle of the community it serves. Obviously, I can’t move the church building, but I’m really pleased that there are two occasions in May when we can bring the church into the centre of our community. Firstly, I’m delighted that we will again be holding our 11am service
on May 14, at the Yaxley Festival. I’m looking forward to meeting many of you over the Festival weekend. Please do join us for our open air service. The following Sunday, May 21, we are holding our Community Sunday again. Instead of meeting in church for a service, we will be doing various projects around Yaxley to support those who need assistance. Please visit our website for further details at www.saintpeters.co.uk or email us at community@saintpeters. co.uk or phone us on 07776 226790. May I invite you to come to St Peter’s on Saturday May 6, from 10am, for Green Day, our annual plant sale. I am also pleased to say that St Peter’s is now open through the summer on weekday mornings, from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Please do come along for some quiet time in God’s presence or to admire the architecture or for any other reason. Lastly, a reminder that you are all, of course, always welcome to attend any of our services – details on our website. As this year progresses, I pray that we would all know that God is not remote, but that He is right in the middle of our lives, our cities, towns and villages.
May you know the joy and hope of the risen Jesus Christ this Easter and always.

St. Peter’s Church “Green Day” Plant Sale Saturday 6 May 10am – 2pm
Yaxley festival Saturday 13 May we won't be holding our usual coffee morning, but we will be outside the Chapel giving away tea, coffee and cold drinks while you are waiting for the parade to pass by. We look forward to seeing you there. Just to let you know in advance, on the June 10, we are holding a Strawberry Tea in the afternoon
instead of our usual coffee morning and it will be a fund raiser for the Circuit Community Project. More details in the next issue of the Gazette. Sunday Service and Junior Church start at 10.30am every week. Children of all age are welcome.

Conington Church Spring has sprung. The grass is green. I wonder where and when the service is. Just south of Norman’s Cross and to the East of the A1M lies the village of Conington. Its beautiful church, dedicated to All Saints, was “closed “ in 1976 and its congregation was united with that of St Giles, Holme. The building is now in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust, who permit 2 services to
be held per year. These are 1662 Traditional Sung Evensong and the next one is on 21 May this year, which is the 5th Sunday after Easter at 3pm. The 6 Bells are rung to welcome the congregation and the service is accompanied by a robed choir. If you have never been in Conington church, or just miss the old ways of Worship, you are invited to join us for the next service. We hope to see you there.
Our annual Green Day Plant Sale is a brilliant way to stock up on plants, with friendly advice, as well as being one of the social highlights of the year and a great fundraiser! So, resist the temptation to buy your bedding plants before then - we will have lots and lots of homegrown, hardened off, bedding plants for sale, as well as perennials, vegetables and trees. We never know what will turn up on the day! If you have any spare plants of any sort, just bring
them along. Contact Fran Russell on 01733 244493 or fran@lancersgap. co.uk if you have any questions or if you would like a stall (£20 each). It takes place between 10am and 2pm, with stalls and refreshments as well as the plants.

T R O P S Yaxley Girls FC
goodsport
Yaxley girls Fc have had a great season so far and it isn’t quite over. We have four teams in the S-Tech Cambridgeshire league and all our teams will finish in the top half of their leagues, with two teams aiming for the top spot. On 25 March, the U14’s beat our U13’s in the semi-final of the County cup. It’s a great achievement to have both teams reach the semi-finals congratulations to the U14’s who are now in the final. We are looking forward to the next season and are
looking for new players and coaches for our ever expanding club, which can accommodate girls aged between 5 and 15. If you would like any further details, please contact us at yaxleygirlsfc@hotmail.com
Yaxley beat two of the biggest names in rugby The Yaks were lucky enough to get invited to a round robin tournament with Saracens and Bath Rugby recently. The matches were staged at Mill RUFC, in the shadow of the impressive Allianz Park main stand, with thousands of people passing as they made their way to the Aviva match between the two big names of English rugby union. Yaxley took a strong team down to North London (despite the event clashing with Mothering Sunday) but were massive underdogs. First up, they took on host club Saracens, starting brightly with three tries to nil lead at the half time interval. With fifteen minute halves and warmer weather than seasonal average, the second half was about managing the games and seeing out their allocated six tackles as far down the pitch as possible. The home side tired, seeing four more Yaks scores for an unexpected away win. The Yaks had put themselves in a strong position to win the tournament, even after one game. The fact they played their second and final match straight off against a Bath side who had been gently warming up during the Saracens game wasn’t ideal. The coaching team were quick to talk strategy with their players during the turnaround. Bath had some good early possession and the Yaks were defending their own
try line for dear life. The attacking side panicked though and the ball was turned over before a length of the field score saw the deadlock broken. Another quick try meant the remainder of the first half was played out with both sides carving out good chances. Bath scored one in the corner, before another Yaxley try before half time, saw an inspirational speech from Coach Andrew Burgess about keeping possession and not making mistakes. His Yaks side held out defensively, but cut loose with the ball romping home to win 10-1 in the end. This was despite the late yellow card to Olly Watts, who spent time in the sin bin for an aggressive tackle. Across the two matches, the scorers for Yaxley were, Harry Burgess, Will Burgess, George Burgess, Cameron Park, Matt Sterry and James Warrener. The final game between Bath and Saracens ended 3-2 to Saracens. The Yaks will be playing at Yaxley Fest and the Peterborough Beach and Touch tournaments in the coming weeks. There are still plenty of spots on the squad for adults and juniors so come along to training at Yaxley 3G from 9am on Saturday mornings.

Fourfields
William De Yaxley
It has been another successful sporting month for the children of Fourfields. We took part in a Peterborough schools cross country event at the end of March and were extremely proud to come second overall. It was a fantastic team performance and we look forward to further success in these events. The children showed an incredible team spirit and cheered each other on, as well as encouraging all competitors. It isn’t just school events where our children have excelled. We love to celebrate success outside of school as well and would like to mention some superb performances that some of our swimmers have been producing recently. Five of our pupils swam at the Cambridgeshire County Championships, representing COPS. These children had to meet minimum qualifying times just to be able to compete. Their results were incredible and the children should be extremely proud. Amy (11 yrs) qualified for all 17 races in 12yrs category, gained 15
Here at the William de Yaxley, 1 March saw the start of our Bishop Stephens Lent Challenge, where not only our school, but many in the Diocese of Ely Multi Academy Trust, took up a challenge, striving to obtain a gold award for completing five weekly tasks. We focused on the plight of refugees and their daily struggles to find food, water and maintain personal hygiene. On Ash Wednesday, 1 March, the Worship Council introduced the challenge to the school showing the results of the first challenge - The Backpack Challenge. If you had to suddenly leave your home and flee what would you take with you? Once the disappointment of leaving the television and game stations were overcome, the children carried out many thoughtful and compassionate discussions, culminating in backpacks suitable for the task. Week 2 was all about food, not only the challenge that refugees may encounter, but also some people in our own community. With this in mind, we had a dress-down day for a donation of food for St
pb's, 2 gold medals (800m freestyle and 200m butterfly) 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. Stan (10 yrs) qualified for 12 races in 10/11 yrs category, swam 11 races, gained 11pb's and 2 bronze medals for 200M IM and 200m backstroke Calleigh (9 yrs) qualified for 9 races in 10/11 yrs category, swam 7 and gained 6 pbs. Jack (9 yrs) qualified for 9 races in 10/11 yrs category, swam 8 and gained 7 pbs. Jack was also awarded a gold medal and plaque as winner of the BAGCAT trophy (overall top boy) in 10/11 yr category. Alex (9 yrs) qualified for 5 races in 10/11 yr category and gained 5 pbs. Alex was also awarded a silver medal for 2nd place overall in the BAGCAT 10 yr category. Between them, they are currently ranked top in the county in a number of strokes/distances within their age groups - a huge achievement. All five have already met qualifying times for next years County Championships! Well done to all.

Stretton Pre-School Plans are underway for the Stretton Pre-School Summer Fete, which is being held on 25 June, so please save the date! There will be loads of fun to be had - craft, soft play, stalls, bouncy castles, tombola, raffle, ice creams, food, drink and more! The children will also be performing some of their favourite songs in a concert! But before the Summer Fete, we have the Yaxley Festival! Our children and parents are looking forward to taking part in the Jack in the Green and Friends parade – look out for our banner and balloons! We will also have a stall at the Festival with soft play and craft activities for the
Peter’s Foodbank, the resulting donations were overwhelming collecting a massive 185kg! Week three discussed the importance of hygiene to prevent infection and disease and how difficult it can be for some people to maintain. We asked for donations of toiletries and were once again overwhelmed; these also went to the St Peter’s church. In week four we looked at water, how we take it for granted and actually how heavy it can be and how difficult to carry. We had a team building exercise involving guttering, water, a lot of giggling and only a cupful of water at the end! In our final week, we focused on the refugees themselves; it was a time of reflection where the children could send a message of hope to the refugees. Their thoughtfulness and compassion was something we should be very proud of and the support that we have received from parents and carers over the past five weeks has been immense and we send our heartfelt thanks. We will let you know if we receive the gold award.
children. Come down to meet us and get a feel for our friendly, village pre-school.
One of our main focuses this term was for our Mothers’ Day. Our children enjoyed making their cards for their mums and talking to us about what they liked and what made their mums special. The children also made several crafts for their mothers including: decorating shells and colouring flower bouquets. Our finale was our annual lunch with all our children and their Mothers, Grandmothers and/or carers, which was well received by all involved. As a registered charity, we are regularly fundraising and have two coming up. We are collecting 'bags for school' on Thursday 11 May, if
you have any unwated clothing, etc, please let us know and we can collect or drop off at our Pre-school. We also have our popular Pamper and Prosecco evening on 3 May at Orton Hall Hotel, a chance for a glass of bubbles, some great treatments and browse luxury boutique stalls

Yaxley Infant School At Yaxley Infant school, we have spent the last month acting, celebrating, singing and raising money for charity. Year 1 children performed “The Lost Chick” to parents. The rhyming story was written by the class teachers, Miss Parker and Miss Hughes. Children performed in the morning and afternoon and it was well received by all the parents. One parent wrote: “Great performance from Year 1 this morning, lovely to see how happy and confident all the children are! Well done to all (including the wonderful teaching staff)!” After the performance, children raised money for their Enterprise project. The Children who visited Ferry Meadows recently felt sad about the damage caused by vandals and felt they should do something to help, so they sold cakes and juice, raising £88! Well Done Year 1. To help rejuvenate our outside environment in Foundation Stage, staff and parent helpers spent two Saturdays in March giving it a makeover. After hours of digging, painting, cutting and shovelling, Foundation Stage children now have a new trim trail, small word

area, welly shed and an amazing mud kitchen. Thank you to all those who helped. The children have loved using this new space. Yaxley Infant School took part in Red Nose Day, all the children and adults dressed in red to raise money for those less fortunate. We raised £150 pounds, another amazing effort from a small community school. Foundation Stage children visited Hamerton Zoo at the start of the month and enjoyed seeing and feeding the animals, learning about being a Zoo keeper and enjoying the opportunity to have their 1st big adventure outside of school. Children in the choir all took part in the A1 music festival. Schools from the local area took part in singing to hundreds of parents at the Cresset. Our children represented the school perfectly, showing great teamwork and fabulous singing. It has been a busy month at Yaxley Infant School and all the wonderful fund raising, performances and trips would not happen without the support of our parents. Thank you!

MONEYMATTERS

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest we will publish them here.
Mandatory digital record keeping and reporting for businesses will be phased in from April 2018. Unincorporated businesses with turnovers above the VAT threshold will be the first to make quarterly reports. Making Tax Digital (MTD) aims to create one digital account for each taxpayer, incorporating all of your taxes. Quarterly filing obligations will be imposed for businesses and landlords, with a view to enabling you to track your business transactions as and when they occur. At present, there is no plans to change the tax payment dates, although a voluntary ‘pay as you go’ system will be introduced. From April 2018, unincorporated businesses (self-employed, sole traders and partnerships) and landlords with annual turnover above the VAT threshold (currently £85,000) will be required to keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates. From April 2019, unincorporated businesses and landlords with turnover below the VAT threshold will need to comply with the new rules. All incorporated businesses and landlords (limited companies) will be required to meet the MTD filing requirements from April 2020. Those with an annual turnover of less than £10,000, will be exempt from digital record keeping and quarterly updates - unless they choose to enrol. If your accounting year end is 5 April and your turnover is over £85,000, your first quarterly update will be for the period 6 April 2018 to 5 July 2018. However, if your year end is 31 March, your first quarterly update will therefore be from 1 April 2019 to 30 June 2019 - a delay of one year. At the moment as we understand the position, after four quarterly updates have been submitted, there is a period of 10 months for the reconciliation of end of year accounts and final submission of any adjustments or further claims necessary. We believe that, for most clients, MTD will be a positive transition, which should simplify reporting, making taxation more efficient and accurate through the use of digital tax accounts – we just have to get over the transition period. How we manage and budget for this change will depend on the software available, and we will be working closely with our clients to ensure a smooth transition.
Dates to remember - May 2017 1 May 2017 Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 31 July 2016. 7 May 2017 Due date for filing and payment of VAT for the period ended 31 March 2017, unless you submit a paper return then the date is 30 April 2017. 31 May 2017 Deadline for employers to give their employees their P60 for the tax year 2016 - 2017. Monthly dates: 19th of the month: Due date for postal payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions and online filing deadline for CIS300 monthly return to HMRC. 22nd of the month: Due date for electronic payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions to HMRC.

Local history book to be republished on 30th anniversary “Rather an awkward place to go to see: for being surrounded by a tract of perfectly fenny country and screened moreover by a phalanx of tall reeds near the margins of the water, the nearer you approach the lake itself. The less able you are to get a view of it.” W.T. Bree Recollections of a morning’s ramble
F
or all our rich local history, the bookshelves of antiquity are sadly quite sparse for those interested in researching the events that have shaped the settlements of Yaxley and its neighbours. Fortunately, this is about to change later this year, as a work that first debuted three decades ago, is set to be republished. In 1987, Paul Middleton released Whittlesea Mere (ISBN: 9780903803199), which recounted, in unprecedented detail, the history of the great lake that shared shorelines with Holme, Yaxley, Farcet, Stilton, Denton and Caldecott. The book described the Mere’s origin and natural history, its importance in the everyday lives of those who worked and played upon it and the monumental drainage plan that transformed the landscape into fertile farmland. Key contributors back in 1987 were: Bernard Chambers, Dennis Clarke, Eric Day, Jayn Gilbert, Margaret Long, Simon Martin, Kathleen Peach, Alan Swift and Lesley Swift. Whilst the original foreword by Fenland’s favourite
poet, Edward Storey, remains, the tome is bookended with a new contribution from Kate Carver of the Wildlife Trust. With the blessing of the Worker’s Educational Association, the work is being expanded, brought up-to-date and republished under the banner of the Great Fen - the landscape restoration project that is home to the original site of the great lake. To give the work broader appeal, the book will be retitled England’s Lost Lake: The Story of Whittlesea Mere and will hit the shelves this September, coinciding with a special event at the Admiral Wells public house in Holme. Meanwhile, Yaxley’s Fenland Trust have been working closely with the author to digitally transcribe the original document, set the new text and add content, which includes supplemental information on everything from Duck Decoys to Bog Oaks. For now, I would like to leave you with an extract from the book and a promise that we will keep you up-to-date with publication dates and places to buy.
England’s Lost Lake: The Story of Whittlesea Mere (extract) Imagine a vast expanse of water stretching some three miles by two miles (approximately five by three kilometres), no more than seven feet (2.1 metres) deep, surrounded by a thick belt of reed and sedge swamp and fed by small channels of water. On the Mere itself, an abundance of wildfowl and at dusk black clouds of starlings flying in to roost in the reed shoals, whilst on the fringes of the Mere, one or two mereside cottages where fishing nets are laid out to dry. Venturing up one of the narrow lodes, the brilliant flash of dragonflies and the more leisured and random flight of butterflies, catches the eye against the bankside vegetation’s collage of colour. Our approach suddenly flushes a wisp of snipe into the air from the hassocks of grass in the heathered bog, which stretches away towards Holme village. It seems a desolate and eerily beautiful scene, remote from civilisation. Imagine too, the reed and sedge cutters coming out for
Yaxley and Holme to spend backbreaking, chilling hours harvesting the crops of reed on to rafts and then leading the rafts up the lode to the stacking yards. The turf cutter digging blocks of peat from winter fires; the shout of a horse boy, his imagination excited by the open expanse of the Mere, turns our gaze towards a gang of lighters, carrying coal across the Mere on its way from the yards at Yaxley to Ramsey town. This was nature’s landscape, but one that admitted men and women into an intimate partnership with it. Without the Mere and the bog, without the crops of reed, grass and peat, the way of life of the villagers would have been less rich and varied. Without the people to manage the reed beds and to clear the river channels and control the grazing of pasture, the Mere and fen would have silted and dried up long before drainage finally took place in 1851.”

Going on holiday with your dog? The weather is warming up and not long until many Brits go on holiday. More and more people are also including their four-legged friend – well why not, they’re part of the family after all and it’s far easier to take them with you these days!
W
e think it’s great for you to take your dog on holiday and as Vets we can offer you lots of advice about travel safety and disease awareness. There’s a lot of coverage in the media at the moment about dog illnesses. Sadly, it’s true to say that more relaxed pet passport rules and the ease of canine travel, has meant diseases usually not seen, or rarely seen in the UK, are rearing their ugly heads. There are five particular diseases you should be aware of – Lyme disease, babesiosis, lungworm, Alabama rot and seasonal canine illness. All of these diseases are serious and potentially lifethreatening for your dog. Thankfully, we live in a relatively low risk area for these diseases, but if you are travelling with your dog, either in the UK or into Europe, the risk increases.
Tick-borne diseases Both Lyme disease and babesiosis are carried by ticks. Ticks are a bloodsucking, parasitic arachnid. They live in woodland and long grasses, waiting for a host to brush past. Once
onboard, they embed themselves into the skin and feed on the animal’s blood, growing up to 600 times their original size in doing so. They can cause irritation, infection, abscesses and more dangerously - transmit disease. You can dramatically lower the risk of these diseases by checking your dog after walks for ticks (especially after walking in wooded or long grass areas) and keep up-todate with prescription-strength tick treatments. It is worth noting that Lyme disease can transmit to people too!
Lungworm
Lungworm is transmitted by slugs and snails – an odd thing to eat you would think, but as a dog owner, you know they could eat anything! Lungworm is a preventable disease, all it requires is an effective, monthly worming tablet. (Although we also recommend discouraging the consumption of slugs and snails!).
New diseases
Things are a little more complicated when it comes to Alabama rot and seasonal canine illness. They are
relatively new diseases to our shores, first noted in 2012 and 2009 respectively. Alabama rot, as the name suggests, was first found in Alabama (USA) and causes skin lesions and kidney failure. Seasonal canine illness (SCI) causes dogs to become very ill, very quickly (usually within 72 hours of visiting woodland) with sickness, diarrhoea and lethargy. Most cases of SCI are seen from August to November (hence the name). Unfortunately, the cause of these diseases is unknown and research is ongoing. Without a known cause, it is difficult to give advice on how to prevent disease, instead we advise that if you see any signs, you seek immediate veterinary treatment for your pet. Find out more about these diseases online: theveterinaryexpert.com or pethealthinfo.org.uk or aht.org.uk Next issue, we’ll give you tips and advice about travelling safely with your pet in the UK and abroad.

Sat 17 June Yaxley Public Hall, Back Lane, Yaxley, Nr. Peterborough PE7 3GY Presented by Yaxley Amateur Players. Lexay-on-sea is holding its 10th annual village fete and all the villagers are getting involved. Mary Kirk, the vicar’s wife and Chair of the WI has organised the fete every year, this year being no exception. Justin Pick, a handsome and flirtatious, London commuter, just happened to mention to Mary that he was rather partial to Lemon Drizzle cake. Mary then decided that the highlight of the fete could be a competition for ‘The Best Lemon Drizzle Cake’. Justin wanted to become more involved with village life and was honoured to be asked to judge the competition. Many of the villagers jumped at the chance of baking a cake for the competition so they could show off their culinary talents. However, Justin’s popularity had recently started to wane due to his wild lifestyle in the quite village, so when he dropped down dead after tasting the cakes during the competition, everyone suddenly became a suspect. Ticket includes fish and chips. Book online at www.yap.org.uk Cost: £10

Perfect lips Ultherapy Unfortunately the lips age too! They go thinner, get vertical lines at the top and bottom lips, the lines from the corners of the mouth start to give a 'puppet' look which makes us look sad by showing lines down towards the chin making the corners droop. Well with a little professional help the lips are naturally and painlessly given back their fullness, vertical lines smoothed, marionette lines reduced and the corners uplifted to give back your lovely natural smile again. This is another top procedure at the Cosmetic Clinic.
see the beauty of sound This amazing treatment lifts and sculpts the skin non-invasively, gradually from the inside out without surgery or downtime. The treatment zones for Ultherapy are the upper face, lower face, neck and dĂŠcolletage. The microfocused ultrasound energy is delivered to three skin depths, including the layer targeted by surgeons during a surgical facelift. This triggers a natural regenerative response, which stimulates the growth of new collagen and elastin. Book a consultation with our doctor to see what it can do for you.

May is my favorite month – a dream of a month on the farm. Mostly.
There’s a Welsh proverb, ‘A cold January, a warm May’, and this year will be the perfect chance to find out if the Welsh are right, as we certainly had a cold January. I’m not alone in my love of May, Edwin Way Teale, who said, “All things seem possible in May” was absolutely right and he could well have been a farmer. Whilst it’s April’s late frost that catches the spring-planted crops and June’s storms that flatten the winter-planted oilseed rape and barley, May is an island paradise set in the middle where the days are warm, the evenings are long, the animals contented and, provided there’s an inch of rain at some point, all should be as well as can be here on the farm. Here’s another quote for you, Marty Rubin said, “May: the lilacs are in bloom. Forget yourself”, and for the farmer or gardener, whilst we can afford a moment lost, we really should be getting on, as in May we have delicious radishes, rhubarb, rocket and delicious Jersey Royal new potatoes in season and continuing the alphabetical indulgence, May brings us spinach, spring onions and salad leaves too. Oh, seafood too, with north sea prawns, farmed salmon and Cornish sardines, all from British waters, all on the menu (and all on the Marine Conservation
Society’s list of sustainable fish) in May. Here on the farm, we’ll be preparing for some important events. At the end of June, we’re supporting the East of England Agricultural Society’s ‘Food and Farming Day’, where nearly 7,000 school children come to the East of England Showground to see what goes on in the English countryside and to see where their food comes from. There’ll be a huge array of displays with farmers, farriers, falconers and lots of other exhibits where children can get close to the animals, try their hand at cooking, experience an African village and lots more besides. Also in June, on Saturday 10, we’ll be hosting our own Open Farm Sunday event (yes, on a Saturday!). You can bring your picnic, meet the animals and have a short tour of the fields and crops. You can find details on www.FarmSunday.org or by searching ‘Farmer Tom’ on Facebook. So, in our spare time in May, we’ll be making the farm ready to receive you on 10 June! But for now, forget yourself and have a fantastic May… Farmer Tom sells fresh, local, high welfare lamb with local delivery at villagefarm.org.uk

The simple way to a lovely lawn If your lawn is tired, full of weed and moss, then don’t worry, as help is on hand. Sisters, Sarah and Jo, who run the award winning, Peterborough based, GreenThumb lawn care business, can soon get your lawn into great shape for summer. Here they answer some frequently asked questions.
Is my lawn beyond repair? In most cases the answer is 'no' and even after our first visit, you’ll notice a huge difference! How do I start with GreenThumb? It’s simple, just contact us to arrange a free, no obligation, lawn analysis. We’ll do a thorough health check of your lawn, measure it up and let you know the price options. Prices depend on your lawn size and start at just £15 per treatment for a lawn that’s 40 square metres or less - cheaper than DIY and completely hassle free! Book your FREE lawn analysis now
How frequently do you treat my lawn? Our basic service provides four seasonal treatments, designed
to give you a beautiful lawn throughout the year. Three of these are through the grass growing season and consist of a granular fertiliser to feed the lawn and a selective herbicide to control the weeds. The fourth treatment is applied through the darker, damper months of autumn/winter and this specifically tackles moss, whilst also helping to strengthen the lawn. Many of our customers also ask us to hollow-tine aerate and scarify their lawns annually and these mechanical treatments help to address the underlying causes of moss. How does the service work? It’s easy. We give you advance notice by phone, letter, email or
text when we’re due to come, but if the date isn’t convenient, we can always change it. We’ve got three technicians, Jim, Richard and Dan, who apply the treatments and all of us hold the National Proficiency Training Council (NPTC) licence for the safe use of pesticides. Do I have to be at home? The majority of customers aren’t at home when we call. We’re totally self-sufficient and will carry out the treatment as long as we have access to your lawns. Are the treatments safe for children? Yes. We do recommend, however, that children (and cats and dogs) are kept off the lawn for 1-2 hours, to give any products that are applied time to dry.
If you’d like a lovely lawn, start by booking your FREE lawn analysis now and get expert help from GreenThumb. Contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028 or email them at peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk www.greenthumb.co.uk

home&garden
Of slugs and snails Lettuces are coming forth in the vegetable plot and hostas in the flower garden - just two plants that really show the damage of slugs and snails, so often voted gardeners number one pest.
O
nce more, we start a year following a mild, wet winter, which means slug and snail populations will be heaving, as less time has been spent in hibernation - more time breeding and feeding. This is a time when traditionally, gardeners reach for slug pellets of various propriety varieties, but it's the use of these deathly toxins which is, in fact, exasperating the problems we face in our gardens. Yes, these pellets kill slugs and snails, but they also kill thrushes, frogs, toads, hedgehogs and ground beetles - the natural scourge of the slug population. It is best to resort to other methods to control these pests, especially since not all are indeed pests, for instance, the leopard slug is
known for a diet of other slugs and thus, a welcome visitor to our gardens, whilst the vast majority of these animals feed not on new growth, but decaying old vegetation helping to keep our gardens neat, tidy and well fertilized. Slugs and snails hate to cross copper, as it's high conductivity disturbs them to the extent that they shall not pass. A ring of copper tape around any points where slugs enter a house, will give you slug free indoors, whilst ringing key plants and/ or pots again, affords great protection without poisoning the predators. As well as hating to cross copper, slugs and snails dislike rough surfaces, such as: sharp sand and ground glass, both of which make effective
barriers, though of course they will need replacing after heavy rainfall. Another successful prevention is companion planting, as certain plants are seen as highly unattractive to slugs such as: fuchsias and aquilegias or, of course, sacrificial planting - where you add in cheap delicacy plants such as: nasturtiums as sacrificial lambs to protect your prize plants. By avoiding toxic chemicals, a healthy population of predators should thrive in your garden and help reach a symbiotic balance, so that you will be able to enjoy the abundance of local wildlife, alongside the taste of home produce and beauty of your prized flowers.
