Club News: Mitcham Cup 22 May, Open Triples 18 July

So really, bowls is best described as sport for young men that the older generation can enjoy and compete against as well. And where I’ve put “men”, you can read “women” as well, because it is not only a sport where the ages can compete on a level playing field (yes the green is flat!), but at which women can compete side by side with the opposite sex. So come along and give it a go at one of our 'roll-up' Saturday mornings. Don’t worry that you won’t be good enough, even the best sportsmen take time to master the skills and tactics of the game, but there will always someone there with some helpful advice. You never know you might enjoy it! As always at the start of a new season, expectations are high, we are all looking forward to some good bowling sunshine and hope that one of our teams can do what Leicester City have done in the football and upset some of the big teams in the league.

After relaxing us all she had us in a number of different poses and shapes; there were some giggles from parts of the room and the hardest part was remembering our left from our right. A great evening getting everyone involved. Our next meeting will be at Holme village hall on Thursday 5 May, 7.30pm. New members are very welcome.

Yaxley WI Members and two guests enjoyed seeing photos of old Yaxley presented by Stuart Howe, Sally Howell and Margaret Long. Several members recognised relatives and were able to provide more information on the photos. The trip down memory lane left us feeling quite nostalgic! Irene Burnham finalised our Birthday Dinner details and outings were again discussed. Our meeting will be held at The Lancaster Club, Main Street on 12 May at 7.30 pm. We will be welcoming Bob Scott who will be demonstrating glass blowing. This should prove interesting. Visitors very welcome.

Police update

Dear residents, The street focus event held at Laburnum Avenue , Yaxley on 30 March was well received with positive engagement from local residents and members of the community. Another meeting of the Yaxley Working Group has been attended by the team, with Hdc , Yaxley Parish Council, The Fenland Trust outreach worker for the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, updating ongoing youth projects in the village and the forthcoming Yaxley Festival. Our sector Inspector, Paul Rogerson, has completed a Blog on You Tube with Stewart Howe (Fenland Trust) and Outreach worker Rebecca Avery (Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner ), updating the partnership work being undertaken and the setting up of neighbourhood watch in Yaxley. This can be found by logging onto You Tube , and inputting 'Yaxley Video Blog April 2016'. The team look forward to meeting residents when out and about and at local events over the summer. Regards, Pc 1796 Sykes (Yaxley Npst) When reporting incidents or crimes please call 101 ( non-emergency number) or 999 if an emergency.

T

he front of the old fire station has been retained, as guided by planning permission, and construction firm SDC has been busy working to lay foundations and build the shell of the station and training block. Chris Rogers, Site Manager at SDC, said: “It’s been a difficult build so far because of the shape and size of the site. When we dug down to lay the main building footprint there was a lot of muck that needed clearing out and the rain

certainly hasn’t helped. However, we’ve had a good crew who are working hard.” Group Commander Kevin Napier, CFRS, is in charge of the project. He added: “Good progress is being made and we’re looking forward to it being finished at the end of the summer and getting the crew back into the heart of the village. We must thank our neighbours and local businesses for their patience during the construction process as well.” During the construction, Yaxley fire crew is operating from a temporary fire station in Eagle Business Park.

Keeping vulnerable people in your community safe and well We’re asking you to be our eyes and ears in the community Do you know someone living in your street who is vulnerable, elderly, or may just need some assistance with everyday life? These people could be at an increased risk of fire and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service would like to help keep them safe. We offer free home fire safety checks to those who are potentially more vulnerable to incidents, however, we need your help to identify these people.

If you know someone who you think might benefit from a free visit from fire service staff, call 0800 917 99 94. You can also contact us through our website, where you can find information about keeping vulnerable people safe from fire. And don’t forget to test your smoke alarm – and that of elderly relatives – by pressing the ‘test’ button on the device.

by Mark Laws Chancellor George Osborne recently announced a special tax-free allowances for people making money from the internet.

sales@sunlineblinds.co.uk • www.sunlineblinds.co.uk 1200 Lincoln Road, Werrington, Peterborough PE4 6LA

Selling on the Web: Traders from 6 April 2016 can now earn £1,000 free of tax from selling via auction and selling websites, such as eBay and Gumtree. If you make money from the internet, flogging goods stacked up in your garage, for instance, or renting out the garage itself, then that money can be taxable. That’s if you are working as a trader. Are you a micro-entrepreneur (as Mr Osborne calls it), selling services online or renting out all or part of your home? The first £1,000 of income from your online sales will be tax free, although you won’t be able to take off your running expenses before calculating the total. Micro-entrepreneurs only have to declare income above the £1,000 threshold for tax purposes. Accommodation: When it comes to renting out furnished accommodation - as many people are doing by using sites including Airbnb and Ownersdirect there is already a Rent a Room scheme that rose to £7,500 from 6 April 2016. You will be able to use the new property allowance at the same time, though not for the same part of the home. So, for instance, you could rent out the spare room using the Rent a Room scheme and use the new £1,000 allowance to save tax on renting out a parking space on the drive. The big question is whether you are a trader in the first place?

yourchurch St Peter's Church Whilst having some enforced rest during a recent illness I was watching an interview with Alex Jones who presents The One Show on BBC1. She was asked how she got her big break in front of the cameras. She related that soon after she left university she was working in the office for the BBC in Wales. One day she was asked to go and collect Michael Crawford from the railway station and take him to a location nearby for filming. On the way she got a message saying that filming was delayed and could she please take Crawford out to lunch. She had only just started work and had very little money so she took him to a McDonald’s Drive Thru’. She said Michael seemed to be OK with this, but her bosses went crazy with her when they found out. A few weeks later she committed another “indiscretion” and again her bosses were

unimpressed. Apparently, one day her boss said to her something like : “Well, you’re no good in the office so let’s see if you’re any good in front of the camera.” Clearly she was good on camera and this launched her successful career. Effectively she found her career by chance. Some of you will have heard that Archbishop Justin Welby recently discovered that his biological father is not the man he had always thought that he was. Apparently his mother had a brief liaison with another man just before her marriage to Gavin Welby. Archbishop Justin said that he was completely surprised, but then added: "I know that I find who I am in Jesus Christ, not in genetics, and my identity in him never changes...” . This wonderful statement reflects something which is available to all of us. The invitation is open to everyone who believes in Jesus Christ to know their identity in him. That identity includes being loved, being part of God’s family and the promise of everlasting life in his Kingdom. This does not happen by chance. Rather, it is part of God’s plan for us all. Whether you feel that you are in the right job, or haven’t had the sort of break enjoyed by Alex Jones, or indeed if you are not working at all and whatever your family and personal circumstances, the invitation to find who you are in Jesus Christ is open to all. May I take this opportunity to invite you to our annual Green Day Plant Sale (see right). We also look forward to welcoming you to our service at 11am on 15 May to begin the second day of the Yaxley Festival on the Recreation Ground.

'Green' Day Plant Sale Saturday 7 May; 10.00 am to 2.00 pm Our annual Green Day Plant Sale, held at St Peter's Church, is a brilliant way to stock up on plants, with friendly advice, as well as being one of the social highlights of the year and a great fund-raiser! So, resist the temptation to buy your bedding plants before then as we will have lots of home-grown, hardened-off, bedding plants for sale, as well as perennials, vegetables and trees. If you have any spare plants of any sort, just bring them along. There will be stalls and refreshments as well as the plants. Please bring your own carrier bags this year, to take your plants home in. Contact Fran Russell on 01733 244493 or fran@lancersgap.co.uk if you have any questions or to book a stall (£20 each).

We had our first Café Church recently, led by our Minister. It was a lovely, relaxed service where we sat around a large table and drank coffee and nibbled biscuits while listening to a passage from St John's Gospel. This became the focal point for the morning's service. Reflections, hymns, prayers and chat began from the abbreviation of a teaspoon (tsp) thanks, sorry and please! Travel Vaccinations If you are planning to travel outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world. Vaccinations are available to protect you against many travel related infections, such as yellow fever, typhoid and hepatitis A. You don't always need vaccinations to travel abroad. If you do, the type of travel jabs you need depends on which country you are visiting and what you are doing. Please ask at reception for a Travel Health questionnaire; one has to be completed for each person who is traveling. When completed return to reception and they will give you an appointment with one of our nurses to discuss and give you the vaccinations required for your destination. If travelling to Europe please look on the Fit for Travel Website where you will find all the information you need www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/home If vaccinations are required then please contact Reception who will make you an appointment to attend one of our clinics. Please allow at least 4 weeks before you are due to travel, because some vaccinations need to be given well in advance to allow your body to develop immunity and some involve multiple doses spread over several weeks. Please do not leave until the last minute.

Countdown is on for the NSPCC sponsored cycle ride

With spring in full swing and the lighter nights giving us more time to enjoy longer days – now is the perfect time to think about getting on yer bike for the NSPCC.

O

rganised by the Peterborough Business Support Group to raise vital funds to support abused, neglected and vulnerable children locally, the family charity cycle ride at Rutland Water takes place on Sunday June 5. Goodie bags and T-shirts will be handed out to all riders, and after pedaling around the 17-mile circuit, cyclists can tuck into a tasty hog roast. The popular cycle ride is one of the many events organised each year by the Business Support Group. Made up of local business people, the group raised an amazing £750,000 over the past 20 years to help support the work of the NSPCC locally. The funds have helped neglected, vulnerable and abused children and young people through the charity’s national helplines, and through help and treatment offered to youngsters at the NSPCC Peterborough Children’s Centre. The Winter Ghosts

By Willow Coby

GoodRead

by Kate Mosse This is an unusually short novel by Kate Mosse at just 250 pages. However readers won’t be disappointed as Mosse once again takes us back to the South of France and the area in the Pyrenees which provided the haunting backdrop to her weightier Labyrinth novels. It is 1933, and an Englishman visits a book antiquarian in France with a strange manuscript written in the now extinct Occitan language of the region. The antiquarian is curious and wants to know how an Englishman would have it in his possession. Slowly, the foreigner tells his story. In 1928, with Europe still recovering from the aftermath of World War 1, Freddie is recovering from an illness. Still struggling to come to terms with the death of his older brother George, his doctor suggests a trip to France where

Cloudberry Castle: Ballet School Secrets by Janey Louise Jones

8+

This is the second book in the Cloudberry Castle series. The first introduced ballet-mad Katie and her family. Following the death of their elderly neighbour the Mackenzie family find themselves the owners of Cloudberry Castle. The crumbling building could be beautiful and the book follows Katie and her family as they raise enough money to turn it into a new ballet boarding school. At the start of this second book the school is about to open. Katie’s mother was a dancer with the New York City Ballet and has spent the last few months planning classes, ordering costumes, and holding auditions, whilst her dad has been hard at work transforming the rooms into ballet studios, classrooms, and dormitories.

the mountain air in the south may help his recovery. He is consumed by grief and guilt over George’s death and welcomes the opportunity to visit the country where his beloved brother died. A car crash during a storm in the mountains sees him stranded in the oddly deserted-looking village of Nulle. He finds lodgings and the next day is invited to attend the Fete de Sainte-Etienne, a celebration of the village’s past. It is here that he meets Fabrissa, a beautiful mysterious woman. Mosse cleverly allows us to see the psychological effects of grief. As in the Labyrinth trilogy she embeds the story in the medieval history of the Cathars (an ancient sect of Christianity, long since destroyed) in the region. Are there such things as ghosts or do we create them in our mind to deal with the events that appear doomed to reoccur throughout history? Or are ghosts merely the reminder of mistakes that we are condemned to repeat? When September arrives Katie is in heaven. She gets to dance all day and soon makes friends with some of the other girls. Her mum is planning to stage Sleeping Beauty at the end of the year and Katie would love to play Princess Aurora. However, one of the new students, Leo, seems to be about to put a dampener on things. She arrives with a private chauffeur and pony and clearly thinks she is better than everyone else. Katie begins to worry that she is not as good at ballet as she thought she was. Can she win the role of Princess Aurora? Combined with a discovery in the grounds of Cloudberry Castle which may well reveal some long-hidden secrets, this novel is perfect for a young ballet fan. Katie is a very likeable narrator and Jones is an engaging writer. This is aimed at readers aged 8+ and its 141 pages are split into 28 manageable chapters for young readers looking to gain more confidence.

Divorce Finance

Keeping your divorce stress free and simple If you have decided your marriage is over you will most probably want to make the whole process of divorce as painless as possible. So what is the secret? 1. Firstly, don’t only take advice from your friends and family, seek professional advice from a family lawyer committed to resolving disputes in a non-confrontational way. 2. Listen to the professional advice given to you and try to act upon it. Always negotiate before you litigate. Compromise is the essence of any agreement. 3. Inevitably there will be disagreements with your spouse but try to keep emotions under control and avoid verbal abuse and threats. This will simply lead to them becoming difficult and inflexible. You do not want a war. 4. Try to avoid involving the children or using them as a pawn. They are innocent in this situation and they will need the love and support of both parents. 5. You may have been thinking about a divorce for years whereas your partner may only have received the news a matter of weeks ago. You might have to slow down for a while, be patient, and wait until they are ready to discuss matters. 6. Consider all the options available to resolve matters, such as solicitor negotiation, mediation and only consider court proceedings as a last resort. A Resolution committed lawyer will explore the best option with you, suited to your individual case.

Recipe

Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 20-30 minutes.

Five Greens Lasagne Method  Half fill and boil the kettle.  Pour a little oil from the anchovies (if using) into a thick-bottomed saucepan and place on a medium heat. If not using anchovies use a tablespoon of olive oil. Finely slice the spring onions and half of the anchovies and then add them to the saucepan.

Serves 2-4 depending on appetite.

Ingredients A bunch of spring onions Few anchovies in oil (optional) 3 cloves of garlic 175g asparagus 175g broccoli 250g frozen peas 150g frozen broad beans Handful fresh mint 150ml single cream 1/2 lemon (zested) 150-200ml vegetable stock 250g cottage cheese 1 packet lasagne sheets (dried or fresh) Parmesan cheese Fresh thyme (or a pinch of dried thyme)

 Crush the cloves of garlic into the pan and fry until soft but not too coloured (burnt garlic is bitter).  Snap the woody ends from the asparagus and discard. Finely slice the remaining stems asparagus into 1.5cm pieces. Break the broccoli into small florets of a similar size and add both broccoli and asparagus to the pan with a splash of boiling water from the kettle.  After five minutes, add the peas and broad beans along with a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir well.  Roughly chop the mint leaves then add them to the saucepan along with the cream. Grate in the zest of the lemon to taste.  When the vegetables are soft, use a potato masher to mash some of the filling to create

texture. Add the vegetable stock; bring to the boil before lowering to a simmer and adding half the cottage cheese.  Give everything a good stir and cook for a few more minutes.  Preheat the oven to 200°C.  Take the vegetables off the heat and spoon around one third to a half of the mixture into a deep lasagne dish (approx dimensions 20cm x 15cm). Top with a lasagne sheet and a generous grating of parmesan cheese.  Repeat the layers of vegetable and lasagne sheets until you have used all of the filling and then top with a final sheet. I prefer less pasta to filling so use fewer layers but it works as well with three layers.  Mix the remaining 250g of cottage cheese with a splash of boiled water and then spread over the lasagne.  Sprinkle over the thyme along with another good grating of parmesan and a final drizzle of olive oil.  Bake in the oven for around 15 minutes until the topping has browned. Serve immediately with a green salad.

Chairman’s report to the Yaxley Annual Parish Meeting 7 March 2016 Full Council – Chairman Myself and Vice Chair Rodney Butcher With the elections held in May 2015 I welcome all the new faces and fresh ideas brought to Council. Through the year we have had 2 Councillors stand down and following the advertising of these posts, it was pleasing to see there were a number of candidates wishing to become Councillors. I therefore welcome Philippa Crooke and James Reed who were co-opted to the Council and thank the unsuccessful candidates for their interest in standing to represent the community. It has been a very busy but interesting year and the Council has continued with existing programmes and more importantly taken on other projects which will be evident in this report. I am happy to report that the council have awarded grants by way of free use of council facilities, this year totalling £5,530. Special consideration of these various grants is given when organisers are also offering their services free to the village. My appreciation and thanks go out to all of our Parish Councillors who have given freely of their time and knowledge, working to deliver improvements within the village. Each councillor brings something different to the table to ensure a balanced view of subjects to be discussed. Thank you.

Personnel–Chairman Andrew Wood I am pleased to say that the Bookings Clerks position has been filled by Sue Finch who brings a wealth of knowledge from her previous 16

role with Huntingdonshire District Council. The ground maintenance team comprising of, Graham Hill, Mark Maltby, Peter Marchant, Ray Allen and Jason Thorne. They have continued with the maintenance programme improving and decorating Queens Park, the Pavilion and the Austin Hall this year. We have delivered training plans to increase our workforce skills thereby reducing external contractor costs to the Council. Our facilities are looked after by Beryl Maltby and Olive Lenaghan. I am pleased to report that following a suggestion from Beryl Maltby and after gaining the required qualifications, Beryl has made herself invaluable for spectators and players alike with the introduction of hot and cold refreshments at Queens Park has been a success on match days, well done. Delivery of our financial reports is by Beverly Porter who has restructured our operating cost reports to such an extent that high cost elements can be focussed on and reductions made in managing our estate to allow improvements to our facilities in a timely manner. Finally administration of the day to day running of council and therefore responsible for delivering a major part of our ongoing cost reduction, keeping council informed of all new laws, regulations, liaising with District, County, various authorities and the village businesses and residents alike to name just a few goes to our clerk Helen Taylor. As you can see all of our workforce continue to rise to all challenges, helping improve our facilities and reduce costs to the benefit

of the community. Therefore my personal appreciation goes out to our whole workforce whose motivation and dedication in helping with the changes that are required to bring improvements to the Parish of Yaxley are a must. Thank you.

Community Amenity Chairman Graham Bellamy This is a very busy committee that has a wide range of responsibilities including cemeteries, play areas, equipment and allotments. One of the major improvements in this year’s programme has been the upgrade of the old sand based astro pitch to a 3G pitch. Bookings have increased and is being used by all age groups more recently we have an interest for a walking football session. We are pleased to report that the 3G pitch will be inspected this month for inclusion on the FA register that allows for use in match play in all competitions. Work has started on improving the Queens Park pitches by verti draining to improve the drainage and playing surface, this work is ongoing. Discussions where local people were asked what improvements the council could make for the youth of the village. One request was to have the have the Multi Activity lighting switched on in the evening to allow free play in the facility. Following an inspection and upgrade of the lighting this work was completed in January. Agreement has been reached on a junior play area for Middleton's recreation ground

@ Marc Wheatley

Kevin Gulson, Chairman, Yaxley Parish Council and should be set for installation in the new financial year. Work has commenced in the old cemetery, gravelling areas that have been hard to maintain. This will deliver long term cost savings with maintenance of the area. The Council has continued to work with local groups and volunteers making improvements to our community. One group is the Yaxley Countryside Trust led by Reg Bingham and his small band of volunteers on a planting scheme, pruning and hedge laying in areas around the village. Another is Des Watt with his scheme to improve footpath access for all between Yaxley and Holme. The first section at the Wykes has been met with approval. We hope to continue with these and any other programmes in the coming year. Council has collaborated with Fenland Trust in raising the funds for a defibrillator in the village. While funding has been successful we are awaiting sourcing from the British Heart Foundation and completion of this installation. On the downside one of the continual issues raised by the whole community and more recently even our younger residents, is that of dog mess. We have installed additional bins, used footpath spray signage and called in the Huntingdonshire Dog Warden who has been successful with prosecution in areas. But this remains a constant issue that defies sense or reason when a majority of the community are trying and succeeding to make marked improvements our village.

Property - Chairman Rodney Butcher As reported last year structural surveys have highlighted areas for maintenance to the chimney and bell tower on the Owen Pooley building due to their listed building status this work has been delayed and will now take place during the Easter break. We have taken receipt of the new liveried vehicle; its cage gives an element of safety in transporting waste, security of tools whilst working on site and reduces drive time of our specialist vehicles. Have also renewed various machines and

tools, the main being purchase of a new Kubota mower and tools to allow some maintenance work to be taken in house again reducing expenditure.

Planning - Chairman Clive Thorne Our planning committee continue to strive to ensure plans are in keeping with the needs of the village aspects. This committee meets every 2 weeks and attends District meetings when required therefore can be a very busy team of councillors.

Going forward



Our action plan going forward into next year include:• Provision of adult external exercise equipment within the village • Improvement to Austin hall and council office • Village youth to assist with plans to extend the skate park • Continued support of the Yaxley Festival with resource, facilities and further £10,200 sponsorship of the stage • Collaborate with The Fenland Trust over the heritage Trail through the village

Refurbishment of Queens park facilities heating and lighting We will continue to review all finances, however we are finding certain services being cut by County and District and therefore costs are being passed down to parish level. More recently the decision to change the operational times of the streetlights in the coming year has added to our budget as the council decided on grounds of safety and security to have the lights left on. Finally, having seen what a few volunteers and small community groups can do for the village. I would again like to extend this into the coming

years. We can have teams working with and through the Council to develop local initiatives for all to enjoy. Therefore if you have time and are looking for a project or have an idea for a local scheme you think would help others within the community, please come along to any of the Council meetings or forward a letter to the Clerk with your ideas. While we may not be able to do all and where funding is required may mean pushing into following years, some however may be low cost and easy to implement therefore your ideas are welcome.

COMMUNITIES AGAINST CRIME

Safe Local Trades teams up with Yaxley community to promote Neighbourhood Watch Scheme It is said that everybody needs good neighbours, and that certainly seems to be the case for the Yaxley residents.

M

ore than 30 years after the UK’s first Neighbourhood Watch scheme was established, the initiative aimed at developing close liaison between households in a neighbourhood, the local police and the local authority is going from strength to strength. The aim of NHW is to help people protect themselves and their properties, to reduce the fear of crime and improve their local environment. It has been proven that areas which operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by crime, rogue traders and distraction burglars. There are many advantages associated with being part of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme; including a sense of greater contentment and security amongst participants and a feeling of

being involved in the community - bringing back the community spirit and giving you peace of mind. Safe Local Trades, covering the PE Postcode area, has worked with many local neighbourhood watch groups over the years – providing numerous lamp-post signs as well as giving free talks on the dangers of doorstep callers. Our latest collaboration has been with the Yaxley community, where Safe Local Trades has been delighted to provide 20 free signs to the Yaxley Neighbourhood Watch. Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, said: “It has been a pleasure to donate these signs to a community which cares about each other and the safety and security of their homes and surroundings.”

Stewart Howe, chair of the Yaxley Neighbourhood Watch, was recently presented with the signs by Eileen. (photo of Eileen and Sally Howell YNW Co-ordinator)

With over 4 million memb ers, Neighbourhood Watch is the largest voluntary organisation in the country. Established in 1982, it is free to join and open to everyone. He said: "Eileen and Safe Local Trades have supported the Yaxley Neighbourhood Watch scheme from the very beginning, offering advice in addition to donating signs for use in and around the village. We look forward to working together as the scheme develops and promoting our collective aim to build a safer community."

If you live in the PE Postcode area and would like to inquire about obtaining free Neighbourhood Watch lamp-post signs, please email eileen@safelocaltrades.com or for advice visit www.safelocaltrades.com/consumers/advice/your-neighbourhood-neighbourhoodwatch

FARMING 

Farmer Tom

Date for your diaries:

Open Farm Sunday - Sunday 5 June www.farmsunday.org

“I’d never leave the farm in May”. Those were the words of my grandfather. For him, May was the best month; his cattle enjoying the fresh grass, the morning mists and spring sunshine, the birds singing their courtship theme tunes.

F

or me, the abundance of May is in the colour green; through winter’s grey-scape I forget how many shades of green there are until May erupts in a seasonal reminder. On the farm the spring lambs are running around and annoying their mothers (perhaps in your house too?!), the birds are nesting in the hedgerows, and the crops are growing in the fields. Hopefully your vegetable patch is thriving too if you have one? I’ll be planting lots of seedlings now that the major threat of frost has passed. One of the joys of May is that there is light in the evenings for longer which means there’s more time to enjoy the countryside. For me though, the golden hour isn’t sunset, but sunrise. As a farmer, I’m often up early in the morning, and this really is the best time of day. It’s still, peaceful, and we’ve been having some spectacular sunrises veiled in May mist. As well as working with our beautiful English countryside, and all the tests that nature and the weather can bring us, the

greatest challenge today for farmers is the prices that are paid for our produce. Supermarkets have so much power that they can drive prices down to the point where farmers can no longer make a living. The dairy industry has been hit as hard as any, and in the past 20 years over 60% of dairy farmers have had to sell their herd – that's 1,000 herds a year! But here’s the secret: supermarkets don’t have all the power – we do. In seeking out best quality, locally produced, seasonal British produce, we’re not only reducing the distance our food has to travel which is better for the environment, we’re not only buying from the country with the best animal welfare standards globally, and we’re not only getting the freshest, best quality product; we’re also sending a message to the supermarkets that we want to see the ‘best of British’ on the supermarket shelves, and to support our farming neighbours at the same time. We had considered selling our property for sometime and eventually called on 3 estate agents to give us a valuation.

At the time of the market appraisals SMART MOVE were the agents who took most time in talking through the market conditions with us. They were the most genuinely understanding of the sensitivity of us selling our property and in addition supported us greatly in the search for our new house taking into consideration our needs and essential criteria we gave them. Our house was on the market just 24 hours before Lewis confirmed an offer had been made. From this moment Lewis was always on hand to answer any queries we had even on occasions out of business hours. The whole experience was considerably less painful thanks to Lewis. He certainly knows how to go that all important extra mile. We would definitely recommend SMART MOVE to anyone considering selling. Peter and Sue Marchant, March 2016

Secure your garden against green-fingered thieves

by Eileen Le Voi

Let's face it – when it comes to our property, most of us ensure the alarm is switched on, doors and windows are locked and a light is left on when the house is empty but when considering our outdoor space and belongings, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security?

A

s the fine weather settles in and the gardening bug bites, the temptation and opportunities for greenfingered thieves grow faster than weeds in the driveway. The brighter days and longer weekends present more time for mowing lawns, pottering in the garden, and spending time with friends and family al fresco. But according to the Crime Prevention website (www.thecrimepreventionwebsite.com) garden crime affects around one in seven households in the UK – with thieves targeting pretty much everything from plants and paving labs to garden statues, lawn mowers, fish from ponds and even newlylaid turf. While most of us see the garden as an extension of our living space – with nice ornaments and stylish furniture – we don’t always think about the value and security of our outdoor possessions in the same way as we do as those inside the home. However, we can all take some simple precautions to protect the garden and possessions against green-fingered thieves, particularly during weekends or summer holidays when the home is empty.

• Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief - an unlocked back gate or shed (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools / machinery or bikes) • Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds • Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home • CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcomed activity from your home • Install some sensory / outdoor lighting • Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors • If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels • If you are going away, even for the weekend – lock any back or side gates or other entrances to the garden to limit access • Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment; even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves • Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball • Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or When thinking about having any security, trampolines, with your postcode garden maintenance or crime prevention work • Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs carried out in your home and / or garden, • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group – where you and your neighbours can always use someone reputable and trustworthy. look out for each other (see www.ourwatch.org.uk to find your local group)

FA Cup FACTOIDS

 The FA Cup kicked off in 1871, making it the world's oldest football cup competition.  The only club still in existence to win three FA Cup finals in a row is Blackburn Rovers (1884 to 1886). They had 24 consecutive match wins in that time.  In 1888, a match was held on Christmas Day, between Linfield Athletic and Cliftonville.  Ashley Cole holds the record for the most wins – he’s won seven times! Three wins were with Arsenal and four with Chelsea.  The current cup itself is a replica of one created in 1911, by Fattorini & Sons in Bradford.  Jimmy Speirs scored the winning goal for Bradford in 1911. He went on to be awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the First World War.  Arsenal hold the current record for most FA Cup wins (12). Arsenal also holds the record for the most wins in the FA Women's Cup (13).  Manchester United was the first team to win the Cup after only playing top-division teams (1948).  In 1985, Kevin Moran became the first player to be sent off in an FA Cup final.  The FA Women's Cup began in 1970, although it was then called the Mitre Challenge Trophy.  The first FA Women's Cup winner (in 1972) was Southampton.

At a meeting of committee members and sponsors, Brett was seriously grilled for more than 90 minutes and to his credit gave an good account of himself, historical events and future ambitions, if he hadn’t he wouldn’t be back. Ferns is very happy to work with Brett and it’s a partnership that we as a club are confident has a good chance of success.” Brett Whaley said “It's been a very busy few days, but I'm delighted to be back and that everything has been resolved so quickly. Leaving the club was one of the hardest decisions I've had to make and a decision that didn't work out. I feel I've learnt a lot this season, and I'm really determined to have success

here. The club has continued to grow in the short time I've been away and the next few weeks are really important in preparing for next season. I can't wait to get started!” Lenton added “Brett has come back with a renewed hunger and much tougher attitude that we trust will give us a positive run-in for the end of this season. We also intend to send strong signals about our intentions for the future. Saturday saw some true grit individual performances that pulled the whole team through when most would have not unreasonably expected a collapse. We’re delighted to bring Brett back into the fold and extremely grateful to Ian Benjamin for taking on a very difficult job, he won a lot of friends here at In2itive Park and will always be welcome.

Yaxley Infants At Yaxley Infant School the children in each year group have been developing their enterprising skills through supporting different charities. In the Spring Term, Year Two children decided to support Sport Relief as their chosen charity. They thought about how they could best support their charity and then planned an event. The children decided that in keeping with the theme of sport they would plan and take part in an obstacle course. The children worked collaboratively to develop which activities they would carry out in the course and on the day donated money to take part. Some of the activities that they took part in on their obstacle course included; skipping, balancing on stilts, catching a ball in a cone and jumping on a trampette. They used a wide range of physical skills during the event and really challenged themselves. The children and teachers also used this event to develop other areas of the curriculum. The children wrote their own Yaxley Gazette articles to publicise the event. They had to think about headlines, interesting vocabulary to

Folksworth pre-school hold the reader and illustrations for their text. Deciding unanimously that being a journalist was a tricky profession. The children also counted the donations to practise their maths skills. What the children said about their obstacle course and raising money for sport relief; “It made me happy,” Alfie. “It made us out of breath,” Nalia and Phoebe. They had great fun planning the event, taking part, working on the follow up activities and raising an impressive £285.50 for Sport Relief. Well done Year 2!

This is our final term to prepare ready for big school and we have a jam packed time ahead of us. Together we will look at science, nature, measurement, acting, segmenting, blending, musical instruments and movement to music. Look out for regular updates on our Folksworth Pre-school Facebook page to see what we have been up to. Last term we celebrated Pancake Day, Valentine's Day, St Patrick's Day and Easter. We enjoyed a visit from some snakes and tortoises that will be visiting our summer fete. On Monday mornings we have a lovely lady called Yasmine teaching us how to be musical and we have all learnt the song Kumbaya. To book a free taster session contact Jade Smith on 07542 172075 or message us on Facebook.

Stretton Pre-school

In April, the children at Main Street had a trip to Jo’s farm in April where they got to see and feed the animals. They also enjoyed lots of Farmthemed activities at pre-school including milking cows and making cup cakes in the shape of cows and pigs. At Fourfields the children enjoyed hairdresser week. They put spaghetti on dollies heads and used scissors to practice their fine motor skills. They also decorated hats with hair. We have some budding hairdressers! We are looking forward to the Yaxley Festival in May and have lots of exciting things planned! We are also in full swing preparing for our Summer Fete which is on 26 June. As well as a huge raffle, we are arranging bouncy castles, slides and inflatables, pony rides, stalls, craft activities, food and drink and much, much, more. We look forward to seeing you there! Holme Primary

Mrs Allen,Headteacher

Holme Church of England School is a good school situated in the heart of Holme village. We are a small school with a big heart! We strive to provide a safe, happy, challenging learning environment where all children are supported to reach their learning potential. We have been lucky enough to have some extensive refurbishments to our school as well as a brand new front office, visitor waiting area, small rear extension and a wonderful new outdoor space for the reception children. In March we had a fantastic ‘Faith Week’ which encouraged our children to not only reflect on their own faith but also develop their understanding of the beliefs of a range of visitors outside of the Christian faith. The

older children also visited a Hindu Mandir and Peterborough which they thoroughly enjoyed. We have a fun packed term ahead with visits from a wide range of people to enhance our already broad curriculum. We are particularly excited about the children working with two fantastic tree sculptors who will be helping the children create a permanent indoor sculpture in our school. If you are looking for a place for your child, we still have a handful of places across the school; please contact Cambridgeshire admissions for more details. In the meantime, please do visit the school website www.holme.camb.sch.uk or telephone 01487 830342.

Spring term was a very busy one for us all, and it ended with our long-awaited Ofsted Inspection. We are delighted that we have been judged as a good school in every respect, with the Inspector recognising the good provision that we have for our children, and the good outcomes that they have as a result. This is a tremendous platform from which we can move forward with confidence in what we are doing, and with the desire to improve further. On the last day of term we had our Easter Celebration, to which we invited the members of St Helen's Church. Our celebration ended with everyone placing flowers on our cross as a symbol of the new life that we were celebrating. The coming term has lots for us all to look forward to - including our annual Residential visit. This year we are taking the children from Years 4, 5 and 6 to Scarborough. We also have lots of sporting events and other activities to enjoy. This includes our annual May Fair, where we will have traditional Maypole dancing and other activities for all to enjoy. We are also looking forward to celebrating the Queen's 90th Birthday, and hope that this will make special memories for each of the children as they mark this great event in history.

This Easter, the Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT) celebrated its fifth birthday – did you know that Sawtry is part of the Trust alongside six other academies? Principal Sarah Wilson provides the latest update. The spring term was a busy one, with many different trips taking place across our different subject areas and year groups. Our year 7 geography students carried out an investigation into whether Connington should install wind turbines, and the year 8 students created their own river using sand and gravel. Most notably, three of our students took part in the Geographical Associations Quiz and they came sixth out of 21 schools – a great achievement! Our GCSE historians were also busy last term as 45 students and 5 members of staff spent 3 days in Poland learning more about the Holocaust. As well as a walking tour of Krakow and a tour of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, students had the opportunity to meet with a concentration camp survivor – an extremely moving and memorable experience. And the final mention has to go to Mr Sethi, one of our Maths teachers. Earlier this year, Mr Sethi travelled over to Turkey and neighbouring countries including Syria, distributing aid packs to over 200 refugee families. He raised over £4,200 with donations coming in from all over the UK. His achievement is inspiring, and we congratulate him on all of his efforts.

Holme Pre-school The children and staff are delighted to now be able to play and explore our new Nature Station and Mud Kitchen. This wonderful new investigation zone will provide our children with the learning, skills and development vital to children of Pre-school age. Did you know that digging in mud, for instance develops those important muscles used for writing? The ‘cosy corner’ with log seating will set the scene for class discussions and story time, while investigating the array of new insects living in their Bug Hotel. We would like say a special thank you to all those who sponsored this project and gave very generously enabling us to create an amazing opportunity for the children of Holme Pre-school. Is your child planning on attending Holme C of E School in September? Our Pre-school is a great stepping-stone as we work closely with the school by introducing the transition gradually. Your child will also make friends before they start as the majority of our children naturally move on to Holme School making the giant step feel less daunting for them. For more info on available sessions please contact the school. Details on adjacent page.

PETS

Neutering Part 1 If you own a pet, we’re certain you’ve been recommended (at least once, probably more) to neuter them. But have you ever wondered why Vets (and other pet authorities) go on and on about it? By Cromwell Vets

I

n this short series, we are going to tell you about the main reasons why we recommend neutering. First up – female dogs. There are many reasons to spay female dogs including helping to control the pet population by preventing unwanted litters, reducing the risk of mammary tumours and preventing a lifethreatening condition called Pyometra.

What is a Pyometra?

r Vet nsult you Please co ncerned co if you are etra or to m o y P t u abo ur aying yo p s s s u disc free l lease fee dog. Or p ll e e Cromw 1. to call th 60 01480 52 team on

Pyometra is a womb infection, which in the worst case scenario, can cost the dog her life. Although it can happen at any age, it is most common in middle aged and older bitches.

What causes a Pyometra? During oestrus (“season” or “on heat”), bitches undergo dramatic

hormonal changes whether they get pregnant or not. The hormone progesterone is elevated after the season which is needed to increase the lining of the womb in preparation for nourishing foetuses. If pregnancy does not occur and the progesterone level continues to rise, it results in further thickening and a cyst can form in the womb. Along with the fluid produced by the cyst, this becomes the perfect environment for bacteria to flourish – causing a womb infection or pyometra.

Now the scary stuff The infection alone can cause the dog to be tremendously ill (and very rapidly) but there can be more serious consequences. The infection causes massive swelling of the womb and if left untreated, it can rupture causing the infected

contents to spill into the abdomen. This is an extremely serious and lifethreatening condition. The treatment of choice is surgery to remove the infected womb as soon as possible. If the womb is not removed, there is more than 60% chance a Pyometra will happen again. This surgery is essentially the same as spaying/neutering but with a much higher risk due to a higher chance of complications and operating on a sick animal. This emergency complex surgery is reflected in the cost – it can be anywhere from £850 to £1200! Now compare that scenario to having your dog spayed when they are young. The surgery risk is much lower, the cost is significantly reduced (around £150-£400, dog size dependent) and the risk of lifethreatening Pyometra is completely eliminated.

Cromwell Vets will happy answer any questions you may have 01480 52601

GARDE N VIEW

Bring on the biological warfare! I’m a huge fan of biological warfare. But before you all write in to complain about my radical stance, I’m really not talking about anthrax and Ebola: I’m talking about using nature to tip the balance in favour of us gardeners. By Rachael Leverton

L

adybirds are my favourite biological control. They feast on aphids (greenfly) and during their year long lifespan they can scoff 5000 of them! Ladybird larvae are long and black with orange spots. They look a bit mean but don’t be tempted to squish them as they are also voracious aphid-eaters. Lacewing larvae eat 300 aphids each before turning into adult lacewings and guzzling down even more, and even the much maligned wasp has a taste for greenfly so don’t be too quick to swat it with your gardening glove; it’s actually protecting your roses. The beautiful song thrush is in decline, but it loves to eat slugs and snails. Thrushes were very susceptible to slug-bait poison based on methiocarb and this was banned by the EU in 2014. The

most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic animals). And slug bait is a very inefficient way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%. Frogs and toads are great slugeaters, as are hedgehogs. The former can be encouraged by providing them with a tiny pond: it really doesn’t have to be much bigger than a bucket sunk into the ground. Hedgehogs prefer a pile of logs to hide under, or you could invest in a hedgehog house. There are many handsome ones about, though if you’re a bit of a handyman you could probably make one yourself. The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years was the arrival of pre-packed nematodes and mites. Nematodes are tiny parasites

which are watered on to a problem area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. When the pest dies they are then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants. Predatory mites are also available to target red spider mite and thrips. All of these methods have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment. Of course with organic gardening you’re unlikely to get a pristine plot but don’t despair about the odd blemish. See it as a positive sign that you care about the environment and the wildlife in your garden then repeat after me, blemishes are beautiful...

MICROBLADING Eyebrow embroidery, also known NOW AVAILABLE as microblading, is the Japanese

method of semi-permanent brows and is relatively new to the UK. It is considered to be semi-permanent, as it’s compared to the traditional hairstroke machine technique.

The eyebrow treatment that Uses a very fine blade (made up of everyone 10-16 tiny, fine needles) to deposit is talking pigments into the epidermis. about Because we’re impacting colour closer to the top skin surface, the strokes appear and remain crisp and extremely fine.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Skin deep The Cosmetic Clinic has an extensive range of treatments for the skin but so many clients come back each year for another VI peel. Anyone wanting younger, healthier, smooth and clear skin will benefit from this fabulous and superior peel. The VI peel will improve the tone, texture and clarity of the skin. It's highly effective in clearing acne and impurities without any preparation of the skin beforehand with minimal or no downtime. A major plus for this peel is that it suits all skin types to type V1 and does not cause the discolouration that was once a problem for women with coloured or black skin and is therefore a safe, collagen producing peel without the worry of hyper-pigmentation. The VI peel is designed to reverse the signs of ageing and sun damage and

as well as the face it is also as effective for sun damage on the dÊcolletage and hands. This amazing peel also reduces or eliminates acne scars, treats rosacea and even softens lines and wrinkles as it contains a synergistic blend of gentle yet powerful ingredients suitable for all skin types – it really is just so convenient, painless and can be used on patients as young as 12 years old. The VI peels represent a new generation of peels unlike any others you might have experienced. You can enjoy younger and more beautiful skin in about a week.

Book for a free consultation at our Peterborough clinic 01733 310090 and Lea will be pleased to advise on the best peel for your skin.

Cosmic Katie ‘ sStars COMMUNITY NEWS

By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer

Aries March 21-April 20

May2016

You can afford to spoil yourself as you discover good news on both a personal and a professional level which gives you the ego boost you’ve been lacking since you entered 2016. The coming month offers hard work, but incredible rewards as you work out your base plan to achieve such results. Contracts signed now promise luck.

Taurus April 21-May21

As you take control of your love life, so too you take control of the sexier side of your nature. Not in years has your confidence been this strong. You won’t be afraid of asking for what you want and this could also see some of you bulls turning a friendship into love.

Gemini May 22-June 22 You can cover more ground in the coming month than you have in the last six. You’ve worked out what and who was holding you back and cut all deadwood from your life. Mercury hands you the power of communication on a silver platter. New attractions are different, but say a lot about how you’ve changed. Cancer June 23-July 23 Your psychic nature steps up a level from the 9th and you see with clarity who you need to spend more time with and who you need to cut from your life. Decisions you reach by the 20th surprise your family but put the smile firmly back on your face. Travel opportunities could lead to exciting romance. Leo July 24-August 23

This is a time of great changes for you professionally. Important faces will soon know your name. Don’t be tempted to take more than you want, just because it’s being offered to you. It's better to work out what you want before you set out on this ambitious path ahead. Now is the time to take the lead in love.

Virgo August 24-September 23

Faces who called themselves your friends have proved otherwise in recent weeks. Take a step back and look at the big picture though, as long term this can only be a good thing. Pressure both personally and professionally could be pushing you to the edge, book a much needed, restorative break away before you burn out completely.

Libra September 24-October 23

There appears to be a lot of confusion about your career this month and Jupiter hinders as much as he helps your progress in the workplace. Try not to tell people what you’re being offered until you’ve signed and sealed the deal or it could come back on you. Your charismatic nature attracts admirers from the 15th.

Scorpio October 24-November 22

Why are you being pushed into something you don’t want? Stand tall and, more importantly, stand your ground. News of a wedding or engagement answers an important question which has been on your mind about a certain relationship. Your leadership qualities open exciting opportunities for work, get your CV ready and prepare to dazzle everyone.

With spring relentlessly turning to summer like a sausage charring disappointingly on a barbecue, I find myself with a problem I tend to suffer with for at least nine months a year; it's too hot. Despite my half a bodyful of Mediterranean blood, I hate the hot weather. I go out of my way to avoid being anywhere that isn't air conditioned, I try to lead as nocturnal life as possible (made more difficult by BST - thanks early twentieth century farmers), and the need to drink sixteen gallons of fluid a day lest I turn into some giant repulsive raisin grips me and won't let go. Whilst I could be outside frolicking in the sunshine I stay inside, sitting six inches in front of a fan in a desperate attempt to keep cool (I'm not opening windows, a bee might get in). Summer, without a shadow of a doubt, is not for me. Technically, hot weather and I should be much happier bedfellows. I mean come on - I look

fantastic in shorts, I own about nine million pairs of sunglasses, and if there's someone out there who loves a barbecue more than me I'm yet to meet him. It's just being OUTSIDE IN THE HEAT that I hate. It's a wonder that I never took up skiing as a means of holidaying in the snow. There is however one redeeming feature to all the heat based misery of the long dry summer months. There is no joy in the world that even comes close to comparing to an ice cold drink on a hot day, and those sweet moments are just about enough to get me through each intolerably hot day to the next. See you all at the Yaxley Festival - I'll be the one sitting in the car with the air conditioning on full blast.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 There is a really passionate feel to your stars which could see you doing things which others will be shocked by. It is your life Sagittarius and as long as you are happy with the standards you are keeping then that is all that matters. Phone calls, texts and messages bring happy family news.

Capricorn December 22-January 20 A face from your past brings new opportunities which can go a long way towards financial security. Working as a team and signing joint documents makes this a turning point for many of you. Travel plans talked about for the summer are confirmed, which proves how far a close one is willing to go to please you. Aquarius January 21-February 19 Your emotions have been so unpredictable recently that you’re not sure how you feel. This month presents you with the chance to get some very honest answers from close ones, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. You'll finally know where you stand regarding a relationship and vll be able to plan your future accordingly. Pisces February 20-March 20 Family issues have proved harder to deal with than you thought and you may be finding it hard to tell close ones about what’s really been going on in your life. Be civil to all you meet this month. Certain faces hold higher positions than you may at first think and any rudeness could have a negative effect.

Planetary activity this month could see you pursuing a relationship which you know deep down is not for you.

BUSINESS FOCUS

Macmillan – Sian Clarkson by Claire Larrington

A group of local women are working together to raise money to send 27 year old Sian Clarkson and her two beautiful children, 5 year old Joshua and Bella who is 4, on the holiday of a lifetime. Sian was diagnosed with stage 4 Melanoma in February 2014. She has undergone numerous operations and is receiving treatment, to which she is currently responding well. The funds raised will enable Sian to build upon and create valuable memories with and for her children. Her current goal is to live life to the full. Longer term, she is hoping that this will raise awareness of skin cancer and the importance of looking after yourself when in the sun. The organisers, Toni Stimpson,

Rebecca Mott, Erica Tee and Rachel Cox, have children who go to the same school as Joshua. They said that wanted to help and do something for the family. They commented upon how upbeat and positive Sian is and how she thoroughly deserves what they are doing for her. They have been humbled by the generosity of the local businesses in Yaxley. They would particularly like the thank the Three Horse Shoes for hosting an amazing day of fundraising on Saturday 23 April.

Please take the time to visit http://macmillan.org.uk/information-and-support/melanoma and follow the links for further information relating to melanoma. If you would like to make a contribution to this very worthwhile cause please visit https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/toni-stimpson

Cambs Oven Clean

Ian Morley ran a successful oven cleaning franchise in this area for almost 5 years and has advertised consistently in Yaxley Gazette during that time. Last Autumn the opportunity arose to leave the franchise and set up as an independent oven cleaner. Ian chose to take this opportunity and set up Cambs Oven Cleaning. The business has continued to thrive, with existing customers Ian has spoken to pledging to support his new venture. As one customer said “It is not the franchise that cleaned my oven over the last three years but you, Ian, you’re the one I rely on.” Would your oven, range, AGA, hob, microwave or extractor hood benefit from a spring clean by a trusted professional? Eco

friendly products are used during the clean, floors are covered and everything is left clean and tidy at the end of the clean, which takes from approximately 1½ hours depending on the size of the oven or number of appliances being cleaned. Oven or hood bulbs can be replaced and hood filters changed. Some minor repairs can also be undertaken i.e. hinge or door seals replaced. Ian looks forward to hearing from anyone who has had their oven cleaned by him in the past or new customers who are interested in the service he provides.

Contact 07584 684853 or e-mail: cambsovencleaning@gmail.com The telephone number has not changed from his former franchise contact details, but the old 0800 number is no longer applicable.
