W
e are now on the countdown to Christmas, only eight weeks to go! So, maybe this is a particularly important time to support our local community; whether this is bringing in a neighbour’s bin, fetching a prescription or just wishing someone a ‘good morning’ as we pass them. In this issue, as we head for a busy Christmas, we extend the community spirit to the local shops. You can check out our feature on local shops and services on pages 21-28. If you’re looking for something to do in November we have lots of activities/events on pages 30-31, whether it’s a Christmas Fayre or a Trinny and Susannah style event on 9 December, I am sure we have an something for everyone. If you have a few hours spare, maybe you can become a Speed Watch volunteer. More details are on page 29. Our community is really thriving and it’s great to be a part of it. Always let us know if you are investing in the local area, it would be good to hear your story. We’d also like to learn about your triumphs and achievements as a community, charity work, forthcoming events and any information that you wish to share with our readers. Thanks again for your continued support.

Reader’s letter On Sunday, 2 October I was travelling to London with my husband. Along with nearly 300 Peterborough people we were on the train that collided with the cows on the track. We cannot think of the right words to express our thanks to the driver, I believe her name Is Sandra. Her shock and fear must have been terrible. How she managed to appear calm and in control and, therefore was able to keep us calm, was amazing. We know that the train could have easily derailed and the horror of a rail crash so
near to Yaxley would have been devastating and to some of us possibly fatal. The police, fire service and ambulance service helped to make the safe transfer of all of us to another train and after 4 hours we reached our destination. Most of us would have been enjoying our day while Sandra would have been reliving what she had seen and felt in those few seconds. Thank you Sandra. Please know how grateful we are that you were our driver that day.
Cambridgeshire Alliance for Independent Living is a local independent charity that works to improve services by raising the voice of people living with all disabilities. One of the ways we do this is by bringing people with all disabilities and carers (called Independent Members), Health and Social Care teams, and voluntary sector organisations (such as Age UK, Voice Ability, Cam Sight and the Carer’s Trust) together at ‘Partnership Board’ meetings. The Partnership Boards are opportunities for you to have your say about what is good about Health and Social Care
services, such as home care and day centres, and what you would like to improve or where you would like to see changes. Recent activities by the Partnership Boards include raising concerns about Home Care, which are now being examined closely by the County Council, involvement in helping to develop a new Carers Strategy and involvement in the process for choosing organisations to run Carers Services.
Interested in getting involved? We are looking for new Independent Members to join our boards. We offer full training and support, out of pocket expenses and reimbursement of travel. If you think this could be you, please contact Leisha O’Brien, Development Officer at Cambridgeshire Alliance for Independent Living by phoning 0300 111 2301 or email (leisha@cambridgeshirealliance.org.uk) To find out more, take a look at Partnership Board pages on our website www.cambridgeshirealliance.org.uk

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Fireworks and bonfires can be plenty of fun for all the family to enjoy. The fire service highly recommends going to an organised firework display instead of holding one at home. However, if you do use fireworks or light a bonfire at home, we would ask residents to take on board our safety advice to ensure it is just their fireworks that go off with a bang: • Keep fireworks in a closed box and always follow the instructions. • Light them at arms length using a taper and stand well back. • Never go back to a lit firework. • Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them. • Don’t light bonfires in unsuitable weather, particularly in windy conditions. • Don’t leave bonfires unattended. • Build bonfires well clear of buildings, fences and hedges. • Never use flammable liquids to start the fire, and never burn dangerous rubbish such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, rubber tyres, and batteries. • Before you light the bonfire, check that children and animals are not hiding inside and are a safe distance away. For more information on fire safety call 01480 444500. Find us on Twitter, Facebook & Instagram www.cambsfire.gov.uk

BLOG Remember remember the 5 of November – 400 years ago, a Spanish sympathising Catholic terrorist was caught with a difficult to explain amount of by Drew Pontikis gunpowder, preparing to blow up the House of Lords and the King of England. 400 years, several tortures and executions, many millions of bonfires and cockney scamps saying ‘penny for the guy guv’nor?’ later, and bonfire night has become synonymous with the phrase ‘lol – look I can make an S with this sparkler!’ Despite my sarcasm, I love bonfire night. As someone who has a significant dislike of long hot summers, the 5 November heralds the arrival of cold weather,
dark evenings and the anniversary of the Christmas decorations being up in the shops for the past three weeks. What’s more, I get to wander round saying ‘Winter is coming’, reaffirming my allegiance to House Stark and feeling very pleased with myself at how funny I’m being. Nothing makes me happier than being out in the cold, wrapped up in a jumper next to a massive bonfire, probably eating a burger, watching the fireworks.
All the cares of the world are forgotten, all the denial of telling yourself ‘yeah I totally know what I’m getting the wife for Christmas’, the memory of the painful sugar crash after Halloween; nothing to care about except watching stuff blow up in pretty colours. I’m not a pet owner, so I’m inexperienced in the stress and unhappiness that dog owners (and more specifically, dogs) go through once the fireworks start
flying. I am however the owner of three children, and nothing is more fun than going to see a big fireworks display with them. And besides – once dawn breaks on November 6 all that’s left to look forward to is two months of miserable Christmas shopping, an office party with a disappointing lack of inappropriate behaviour, and the dark shadow of January diets looming on the horizon. Still ... winter is coming...
Whittlesey Wind Ensemble
Whittlesey Wind Ensemble began life in September 2012 and has seen many changes over these four years.
W
e currently have over 20 musicians of mixed ages and ability, many from Whittlesey, with some traveling from Peterborough, March, Wisbech, Market Deeping and Stamford. Stefen Dicks, our new Director of Music, was appointed this September, bringing with him knowledge he learnt from Kneller Hall, the Royal Military School of Music, and Birmingham Conservatoire. WWE are now more than an ensemble, really a small Concert/Wind Band with an aim to continue growing, so always looking for more musicians to join
us. We would also like to be able to develop some small ensembles from within the main band e.g. Brass Quintet, Clarinet Quartet and small chamber ensembles. WWE have staged some local concerts plus performed annually for Wisbech Armed Forces Day and the Whittlesey Festival, plus carols for John Lewis and residential Care Homes. Our music is varied, from challenging Overtures, which we may never perform but just want to have fun, to other classics, popular and film music. Our latest concert was full of film music. We try to buy new music with
the players in mind and are keen to take suggestions from what people want to play and hear. A Whittlesey Charity, Defibrillators For All, have asked us to work with them to help raise funds and provide the music for a Christmas Musical Evening on 16th December in Childers, Whittlesey. We will be playing traditional favourites plus some newer festive music and hope to see you there for a fun filled evening, suitable for all the family. Give us a try! We meet at the Methodist/United Reform Church, Whittlesey on Thursdays at 7.45 - 9.15pm.
If you would like book the band for an event/concert or if you play a brass, wind or percussion instrument, please do get in touch, either via our website www.whittleseywindensemble.com or our email whittleseywind@gmail.com Yaxley Gazette | November 2016 | T: 01733 757342 | E: info@yaxleygazette.co.uk | www.yaxleygazette.co.uk

LEGAL ADVICE
Your local, family Lawyer I began my legal career in a property department but soon came to realise that I preferred the more personal side of law and moved to work within a family department. That was in January 2000, and I fully qualified as a family lawyer in October 2003. I enjoy helping family clients achieve an outcome which is best for them and their children and moves them forward to a happier future. Clients come to us when they are going through a difficult time and my job is to guide them and find the best outcome for their particular circumstances. Many of my clients say I am approachable, unflappable, organised and friendly. Clients say I have an ability to explain complex issues to them in a straight-forward, easy to understand way which in turn allows them to make informed decisions about their case. I have a young family of my own and understand just how difficult it is to juggle the demands of a family and how that is even more difficult in the face of a family breakdown or separation. I am a Resolution accredited family law specialist in financial provision and children law and a qualified family mediator. I am based in the Peterborough and St Neots area and help clients locally but also from all areas of the country. With the IT available now it is not always essential to be close by. I am just has happy assisting clients by telephone email or Skype rather than the more traditional office environment. This also means that I am not restricted to office hours and can speak to clients at other times when the need arises. Testimonials “Abby was recommended to me and from that very first call, I was
very happy I’d found the right person. She was sympathetic to my situation but told me as it was and in a way I could understand. I would highly recommend Abby to anyone.” Rachel (July 2014) “It was the best service I have ever used. Personnel were very helpful in each step. Received lots of information on how to deal with divorce and what to do after. The best thing I liked was that it was dealt very quickly.” Mrs K “Abby listened to our complex case with compassion. Her ongoing support and advice has been exceptional, she always returns E-Mails promptly and telephones when arranged. Her support throughout this harrowing ordeal has been invaluable and we couldn’t have asked for more from any lawyer.” Anton How can I help I can assist clients with any family law enquiries including divorce and separation, financial disputes, pension queries, arrangements for children, domestic violence, pre-nuptial agreements, civil partnerships, living together agreements and cohabitation disputes. I offer all new clients a free initial 30 minute no obligation telephone consultation at a time to suit them.

W
e have had a very busy few months I recently met up with Samantha Ronnay from The bgl group who kindly donated £400 which was split between the Yaxley & Farcet fund, this allowed us to buy a cabinet for Farcet & donate £299.50 towards a cabinet for the new Yaxley fire station defibrillator. Last week we had the pleasure of meeting Justine Eldred from the Yaxley Gazette, The Yaxley Gazette kindly donated £25 to the Yaxley fund which let us hit our £5000 target which is a big milestone for us. A big thank you to our volunteers which were Rachel Spencer, Terry Barrett, Belinda Barrett, Simone Wilsdon, Rebecca Wilsdon, Kevin Wells, Ashley Wilsdon, Chris Venni & Holly

Barry’s Heartbeat The objectives of Barry’s Heartbeat are to raise awareness of high blood pressure, encourage people to get their blood pressure checked and raise funds for The British Heart Foundation. We aim to spread the word by word of mouth, broadcasting and social media to raise awareness. There is no way of knowing you have high blood pressure unless you get it checked. The symptoms do not usually present themselves until it’s too late. Unchecked, high blood pressure can lead to stroke, kidney failure and heart disease. There will be over 40 stalls offering a variety of crafts and gifts suitable for all the family. We have
stalls for the kids including face painting, hook-a-duck, and sweets/ candy floss. The African Pygmy Hedgehog Rescue Association will also be there with hedgehogs for people to handle! HEALTH MATTERS Repeat prescriptions
Important announcement
Repeat prescriptions may be requested on line, in writing or by faxing (01733 244645). Written requests are left in the post box by Reception. Please note it is practice policy NOT to accept repeat prescription requests over the telephone due to safety concerns, as errors can be made when taking verbal message. SystmOnline is the quickest, easiest and safest way to request repeat prescriptions. If you would like to register for this service, please complete a registration form on our website yaxleygp.nhs.uk or speak to the reception. Repeat prescriptions require at least 48 hours to process and possibly longer, if you need to see or speak to a doctor to authorise a repeat. (Please note this does not include the time required for the Pharmacy of your choice to dispense the prescription, this can vary and sometimes could take up to 72 hours.) Repeat prescriptions are not processed on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Following the successful introduction of our Doctor First appointments system, we have noticed a change in the pattern of calls to the Practice. We try hard to manage our staffing levels to meet the predicted call volumes. Our analysis shows there is an extremely low volume of calls after 18.00 and very few of these are ever of an urgent nature. We have therefore decided to make a change to our opening times. With effect from Wednesday 19 October the Practice will be closed at 6.00pm Monday to Friday. This new closing time will also match the current in-house pharmacy closing time. We have agreement that NHS 111 will be available to our patients from 6.00pm to provide medical advice and, if required, make arrangement for medical assessment with our local Out of Hours service the same evening. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG is aware of these changes and this will bring our practice in line with the opening hours of many surgeries in Cambridgeshire.
In addition to this our analysis has also revealed that from 2.00pm is best time to call for test results, this is due the timing of the results arriving on our system and also telephone lines being less busy. Food for thought quiz William De Yaxley school on Saturday 26 November 7.30pm Cost: £8 includes fish & chip supper. Tickets available from Linda in the patients library or call 01733 246727 Raffle Please bring along your own drinks. No more than 6 people in a team All monies raised go to the patients association. Carer Support Group Meeting The next meeting of the Carer Support Group will be on Wednesday 2 November between 2 - 4pm in the Health Education Room. St Peter’s Church
This month we have a guest post from Alex Agboke, a member of our St Peter’s family, with an invite for you to ‘A Stylish Christmas’… We live in a world where a woman’s worth is largely judged upon her physical appearance and where fashion moguls dictate who and what we should be wearing on a weekly basis. We don’t tend to think much of this as we bumble through our teens and early twenties but it becomes a hard reality as we settle down, perhaps decide to start families, or simply live lives which don’t feature on the front pages of magazines or reality TV. When it happened to me, in my early thirties, after my first child, I found myself having an identity crisis. Who am I? What’s happened to my body? How will I achieve my career goals now?
Overnight I had become someone’s long term 24 hour caregiver with a wardrobe I could only ever dream of getting back into. Just washing my hair had become a longed for luxury. Looking back, perhaps the question I was really asking was - where do I find my beauty and value now? As modern millennium women, where should we find our true value? How do we recognise and adorn the beauty that God designed us for? Not the aesthetic and impossible standard of the advertising world or fashion industry but a beauty that glows brighter with age and wisdom, reflection and restraint. A worth that is innate and not determined by our salaries or postcode. A few of my friends feel as passionate about this as I do so
we have organised a fabulous evening out for the women of Peterborough on 9 December. St Peter’s Church in Yaxley, with its stunning architecture, serves as the perfect backdrop to a charity style and fashion event which hopes to encourage and affirm women in their own unique beauty and value. Invite your friends, sisters and mothers to what promises to be a stylish evening. Enjoy a glass of bubbly, guest speakers and peruse our Christmas stalls, all in aid of a wonderful charity which helps women in the Cambodian sex industry gain their freedom and self-worth. Tickets are £10 online (early bird price of £8). Please visit (astylishchristmas.eventbrite. co.uk)

Advent Carol Service Christmas is just around the corner really but before that we have to open all the windows in the Advent Calendar. Advent, of course, comes from the Latin word meaning ‘Coming’. Yes, it is the warning that the festive season is nearly here. But in the church we regard it as the sign that our saviour Jesus Christ is about to burst onto the scene as a beautiful baby boy. We sing lots of lovely carols to celebrate the birth, but what about the preparation? What does the word ‘carol’ mean to you? Well it actually comes from an old French word ‘carole’ which means a circle dance accompanied by singers. We tend to think that we only have them at Christmas but in fact today we regard a carol as a festive song, generally religious but not
necessarily connected to church worship. This means that we have Advent Carol Services on Advent Sunday as well as the 9 lessons and carols on Christmas Eve. Locally, you will find a candle-lit service in St Giles Church, Holme at 4pm on Sunday 27 November. We will be singing such Advent carols as ‘Come, thou long-expected Jesus’ and of course ‘O come, O come, Emmanuel’. It is a lovely way to prepare for the festivities; a peaceful, calm start to the rush of preparations for Yuletide. Why don’t you come and join us? You will be very welcome.

Holme Afternoon Tea Club – October meeting We welcomed Marie Carden and her dog Smithy to our meeting in October. Marie told an extraordinary story of the how a dog can transform someone’s life. Marie had an operation which left her unable to look after herself. After a very active life she had found this hard to endure. Eventually, despite the odds, she taught herself to walk a few feet in her home. Before her operation she had been a keen horse woman and she decided she would like an animal in her life. She contacted Dogs for Good who provide dogs to assist disabled to live independently. The dog undertaking tasks such as helping the person to dress and doing their shopping and fetch and carry anything they need . Before a dog is placed with someone they both have to pass a test to ensure that they are compatible. Fortunately.
Marie and her first dog passed the test which meant she could dispense with her human carers and was even able to take herself to Newmarket races on her own. She described her difficulties with great humour and can be thoroughly recommended as an excellent speaker for a worthwhile charity. The talk was followed by sandwiches and cake. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 10 November when we will travel to Pidley to play bowls.

Remembrance Sunday 13 Nov The Remembrance service is going to be a joint service at St Mary’s together with the Salvation Army, at 10.30 am, with a short ceremony at the cemetery afterwards for all those who are able. Tea and coffee will be served in church as usual after the service and for those who attend the cemetery.
The scheme, which allows the public to get involved in monitoring the speed of vehicles travelling through their neighbourhood, has been presented with 50 new high-visibility tabards. Volunteers need the tabards to get involved but there is a limited supply. The new tabards will now be used in communities across the county. The donations came about after a volunteer on a new scheme in Yaxley approached his brother, who is the managing director of Peterboroughbased specialist clothing retailer Howsafe. Superintendent Laura Hunt said: “Speedwatch is an excellent example of volunteers making a difference in their community by working in partnership with ourselves. “However, they need the right equipment to operate and we are grateful for this generous and worthwhile donation, which will allow more volunteers to get involved across Cambridgeshire.”
Speeding is routine ly in the top five is sues of co n ce to local co mmunitie rn s a we whole heartedly nd s u p local peop le working port with us to tack le it and m ake our roads.safe r. Speedwatch is used in areas where speeding has been identified as a priority at quarterly neighbourhood panel meetings. It is run by the force alongside the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership and is about educating motorists in the law and monitoring any speeding trends.

Hampton Gardens Preparations for the opening of the new Hampton Gardens School are reaching an advanced stage, with less than a year to go until it opens to Year 7 students in September 2017. Al Greenwood has been appointed as the Head of School for Hampton Gardens School. Al is currently the Deputy Headteacher at Hampton College and is known to many locally as an outstanding teacher of mathematics. Around 450 parents/carers and prospective students attended an Open Evening held at Hampton College on 6 October. They were able to hear about plans for the school and meet the architects and construction team. Parents and children were able to get a feel for the new school through virtual walk-through films, models and plans and viewing drone footage of the site during construction. They were also able to see areas of Hampton College with similar design features to the new school. There was excitement about the range of facilities at the new school, including a full sized 4G all weather pitch, impressive
performing arts spaces and state of the art Science facilities, including a show-lab for events and demonstrations. The Hampton Academies Trust also confirmed that substantial improvement works will be made to the walking/ cycling route from Yaxley by Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council. In addition, the Trust stated that there would be a bus link through Yaxley to the school ready for September 2017. As a new Free School, Hampton Gardens is now in a phase of official consultation. You can take part and share your views about the plans for the new school by visiting the consultation section of the school’s website hamptongardens.org.uk or by requesting a hard copy consultation form from Hampton College.

ICA save Yaxley footballers
ICA Sports Football Club have stepped in to save a group of 6-8 year old footballers after their coach was unable to continue with sessions after a change of work commitments. The parents of the squad then put out a desperate appeal and when other clubs were not able to assist Total Sports & ICA Sports FC did the honourable thing and worked out a way for them to play again. Luke Weston from Total Sports had worked with the players during school sessions and when he learned of their predicament he contacted ICA Sports FC to see if they would be able to accommodate the young footballers. ICA Sports already run both boys’ and girls’ teams for players from 4 years old and upwards at their Bretton base, but have
extended a helping hand to keep this group of players at a Yaxley base. Sessions for this group, that has been named as ICA Fiorentina, started training on Sunday 16 October at the Middletons Road 3G pitch. The club are also keen to establish additional teams in Yaxley and would be very pleased to hear from any parents who may like to run a team that their child would play in. The club membership includes an FA qualified Coach Mentor who would work with any new volunteer to ensure they settle into the role, before being left to take the reins.
If you like the idea of becoming part of the future of youth football in Yaxley you can contact Steve Purnell for an informal chat on 07964 496259 or steve@icasports.com

Changes for Landlords of Buy-to-Let Properties: From April 2017 the way landlords receive tax relief on their mortgage or loan interest will change. Landlords will no longer be able to deduct their mortgage interest relief from rental income before calculating their tax liability. Instead they will get a tax credit equivalent to 20% basic rate tax on the interest amount. All mortgage interest tax relief will gradually be cut back to 20% between 2017 and 2020. In addition to this if they receive child benefit they will have to pay an additional charge as their income level subject to tax will have increased. One way around this could be to incorporate a limited company but many factors have to be taken into account and professional advice should be sought before doing so. A landlord could also transfer ownership of the property to a spouse or partner who is a lower rate tax payer, but again there are CGT implications to consider before doing so. The generous wear and tear allowance on furnished lettings was abolished in April 2016. Landlords will now be able to claim relief on a replacement basis, but no relief is available for the initial expenditure. Restrictions will also apply to integral fixtures. Landlords providing furnished holiday accommodation will not be affected by these changes and they will continue to receive relief under the capital allowance regime.

Folksworth Primary Holme Pre-school Term has begun with great enthusiasm here at Folksworth C of E Primary. We have been delighted to welcome Mrs Jennie Bolton and Mrs Sam Hayward to our teaching staff, and they have both settled really well into our school. Following a village-wide competition, we were able to unveil our new cross in our hall during our Harvest Celebration. The cross is made up of Biblebased pictures painted by members of the school, church and village. It is an impressive sight, and a fabulous focus for worship in all our Assemblies. We hope that the ‘Family Folkus’ (part of St Helen’s Church) congregation that meets in school each month will also love it as much as we do. We have lost a number of families over the summer as they have moved to other parts of the country. This leaves us with a number of spaces in many classes. As always, visits to the school are welcome. Caroline Adams Headteacher
Looking for a Pre-school setting but need those longer hours? At Holme Village Pre-school we realise that not all families suit the traditional hours of a Pre-school. Which is why we are very pleased to be able to offer the extended session times of 8:30am to 5:30pm Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to help those parents returning to work. We pride ourselves in offering a small and personal setting for children aged 2, 3 and 4 years old. Where outdoor learning is at the core of the Pre-school and every child is valued and recognised as having a voice. The Pre-school also understands the importance of preparing children for their transition to Primary school. Sessions such as P.E. and a good lunchtime routine are tailored to encourage independence.
The Pre-school is registered for both the 3+ and 4+ nursery education grant scheme which entitles you to 15 hours FREE per week per child in pre-school settings. We are also registered for funded 2 year olds should the families qualify. If you would like to come and see us we very much welcome you and your child to book a visit where you can see the Pre-school in action along with meeting the staff and the rest of the children. We do currently have some availability but would advise registering your child early to enable your preferred sessions. For more info on available sessions contact Victoria on 07842 192 052 or visit holmevillagepre-school.co.uk
Little Acorns September has been a busy month at Little Acorns; we have lots of new children who we have welcomed to the nursery together with their families. The babies have been enjoying the change in seasons, they have been exploring the leaves in the garden which are now falling from the trees and they have made autumn pictures using their hand and foot prints the leaves they have collected.
•
Our toddlers and pre-school have enjoyed taking part in “The Little Acorns Bake Off.” They have made different treats throughout the week which they have had for their snacks and also taken them home for their families. The Pre-school have been out in the village for a Nature walk where they collected conkers, leaves and twigs, they have also been learning about road safety.
Fourfields October brings an exciting week for the children at Fourfields. The 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings is here and Fourfields will be holding a whole school history week to celebrate one of the most momentous events in British history. ‘1066 week’ will see an incredible range of learning opportunities for the children. Critical thinking as well as historical knowledge will be combined to get children excited about history. The week will finish with a whole school re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings. All children will be able to take part in bringing to life the day that changed the history of Britain for ever. Mr Heather has never been happier. The school football team had their first match of the season. The children from years 3 and 4 came out winners against a team from Eye primary school. We hope for another successful year on the sporting front. The new reception classes are fully settled in to life at school and the new entrance to the school has been a big success. We would like to thank all the parents who park appropriately and leave the area around the entrance clear for children to enter school safely.

SCHOOLS
Yaxley infants It is Minibeast Madness at Yaxley Infant School where the children are enjoying finding out all sorts of amazing facts. In Year 1 and 2 the children have watched as caterpillars have changed from the tiniest creatures into huge caterpillars then spun their chrysalis. After waiting patiently for what seemed like many days they were finally rewarded by dozens of beautiful butterflies unfurling their wings. We are now looking forward to letting them fly off into the Autumn sunshine hopefully to lay more eggs and repeat the life cycle. The caterpillars have fascinated the children and have generated great writing from stories, to factual writing and keeping diaries of the changes they observe. Our monthly coffee mornings are always popular but this month was especially so as it was in aid The Macmillan Big Coffee Morning . Our parents and teachers had been busy baking delicious cakes and many visitors stopped to chat and if they didn’t have time they grabbed a take away. We raised a fantastic £102.21. Parents of our Foundation Stage children this year chose us because we are a “nurturing, caring school with great teaching ethos” and because “it was so friendly and welcoming”. If you have a child due to start school in September 2017 we still have a few spaces left to visit the specialist early years school in the village during the week of 14-18 November. Please call 240918 to arrange a visit. Come and see for yourselves why they think we are so great!

Stretton Pre-school Our children have settled into the swing of things at pre-school and have been learning all about dinosaurs, transport, the ocean and firemen! We had a great turnout at our Halloween Spooktacular on 16th October! The children enjoyed dressing up and there were some great costumes - we had all sorts of witches, vampires, spiders and skeletons! It was a very successful event and all the proceeds go straight back into the pre-school to buy new equipment and toys for the children. Plans are underway for our Christmas Fayre on Sunday 27th
November from 12pm at Austin Hall, Main Street, Yaxley, PE7 3LU so please save the date. We are hoping this will be our biggest event yet! We already have lots of stalls confirmed as attending; a massive raffle; the children will be giving a concert and we are hoping Father Christmas will make an appearance! We have spaces for two, three and four year olds at both our Main Street and Fourfields sites. Please pop in to see our friendly and welcoming preschool. HERITAGE
Yaxley: Eight centuries of commerce Yaxley is one of the largest villages in the United Kingdom, yet looking at the sprawling Fen Edge settlement today, most are unaware that It was once a bustling market town with a thriving fishing industry. Under the control of the Benedictine monastery of Thorney, the market at Yaxley, granted by William the Conqueror, was a lucrative possession. During the 13th Century the parish was the most important place in the Norman Cross Hundred, an administrative division of Huntingdonshire. This status was not without challenge however and in 1201 the Burgess of Northampton took Abbot Ralph the Simple of Thorney Abbey to task over what amounted to tax avoidance. With jurors ruling in Thorney’s favour, the market would continue to flourish as a place for the sale of fish, cattle, horses, sedge and reed. By the second half of the 13th Century a familiar name was presiding over Thorney Abbey and overseeing trade within the parish of Yaxley. This was Willielmus Yakesley (William de Yaxley), whose heart was supposedly discovered by the Reverend Charles Lee (more on him later) in a stone cavity in St
Peters Church in 1842. The abbot, whose gruesome endowment inspired the heart on the village sign of Yaxley and on the crest of the William de Yaxley School, ruled the parish with an iron fist. Preferred methods of punishment for local wrongdoers could be as extreme as the gallows or as unpleasant as the whirligig, a cagelike contraption designed to cause severe nausea or for unfortunate women folk, the scold’s bridle. The original market at Yaxley was worth 60s annually in 1279 but activity disappears from the historical records after the dissolution of the Abbey of Thorney on the 1 December 1539. An attempt to revive it in 1562 by supressed by the Dean and Chapter of Peterborough. Although Yaxley’s ancient market was extinct, the Ascension Day Fair, which was granted by Henry III in 1227, would continue until the early part of the 20th Century before elements were revived in the Yaxley Festival in 2013. One
peculiar custom that has returned is the ‘turf law’. During the Yaxley Fair, villagers were permitted to hang a piece of turf above their door and freely sell alcohol for the duration of the festivities. A market of sorts would return to Yaxley during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1796 the Royal Navy Transport Board identified Norman Cross as a suitable site to build the world’s first purpose built prisonerof-war camp. During its occupation Prisoners were permitted to sell objects twice a week at the local market, or daily at the prison gate. Exquisitely carved bone objects and complex straw work boxes, hats and plaits were sold, allowing the inmates to buy clothing, food, tobacco, alcohol and raw materials to produce more works of art. A rather fanciful painting of this, painted long after its closure by Arthur Claude Cooke (1867-1951) is attached to this piece. In its heyday, the numbers imprisoned at Yaxley meant that the population of the parish eclipsed
that even of Peterborough but by 1814 after Napoleon’s defeat, the prisoners were being repatriated. Two years later the prison depot was disassembled. In the first half of the 19th Century Yaxley would look surprisingly different to modern eyes. In addition to windmills we would see oast houses at breweries along Main Street, or Town Street as it was then known. The oast houses were used for drying hops as part of the brewing process and it would be this brewing legacy that would give its name to the Broadway Shopping Centre at Maltings Square. Here the rich tradition of Yaxley commerce continues with a collection of unique shops and great characters that has so far resisted high street homogenisation and continues to serve the local community in a tradition that has lasted for over 800 years. Buying local has never been more important, to not only help local business but to preserve the character of our village.
The Great Explosion of 1838 Perhaps the most gruesome tale in Yaxley’s history of business occurred on the anniversary of the Gunpower Plot in 1838. It was Monday evening on the 5 November when the wife of Jacob Deboo of Yaxley was working in the family grocer’s store on Main Street. Deboo was famous as the village’s last boatbuilder and as the water levels had fallen and river traffic decreased, the family had become increasingly reliant upon the income generated by the Main Street shop. A contemporary newspaper reports states that Mrs Deboo was “engaged in the selling gunpowder to boys, for the purpose of fire-works, and so 22
incautious was she, that she continued to weigh and sell the combustible by candle-light”. The article adds that several children were stood around the counter, waiting to be served, when a boy lit a cracker at the candle, instantly igniting 12 to 14 pounds of gunpowder. The resulting explosion blew out the window and entire gable end of the shop. Remarkably Mrs Deboo and the children inside the shop were unhurt, but a boy called Garratt, who was standing outside, was not so lucky. The
newspaper reports that he “had one of his eyes literally blown out”. Fortunately for the Deboos the charity of the parish would come to their rescue. The Reverend Charles Lee and his wife Harriette of St Peters raised donations from parishioners to rebuild the shop. The story ends on a happy note in 1854 when Jacob, having successfully rebuilt his business sold his grocer’s shop and bakehouse and drifted into retirement. The Reverend Lee is remembered by a monument in the chancel at St Peters.

Supporting
local
business
Stay independent and make loyalty on your doorstep pay. Small and independent businesses are the heart of our communities and it's now more important than ever for the community to get behind them and show our support. By Justine Eldred he Broadway Shopping centre has been open for 55 years; the last year has seen vast improvements with new businesses opening up and it's now a thriving centre. Yes, parking has been an issue, however, it's been addressed and is now working effectively. It concerned the shop owners as much as it did the rest of our community, but we can now all put this behind us and support local business, whether that is in the Broadway Centre, or any of the local businesses that advertise in this magazine. All offer a great service and without them we wouldn't have local resources and trades for people to utilise. Local businesses are a crucial part of our communities, bringing variation and vitality to our villages, keeping money circulating within local economies and maintaining
T
a sense of community. In order to survive against the large commodities, local businesses are increasingly finding they need to work together, putting aside the natural urge to compete. When businesses work together everyone benefits, the businesses themselves as well as the communities they serve. If you don't use them you will lose them. Remember, when you shop locally you are not buying a CEO a third holiday home, you’re probably helping a little girl get dance lessons, a new football kit for the young lad and helping their parents put a meal on the table! All the advertisers in the Yaxley Gazette are local advertisers, so bear this in mind when you need a reputable local trades person or company, we all live in the same area so lets keep supporting each other.

5
reasons to shop locally
1. Beneficial for the local economy Local businesses are the backbone of our community. Research on spending by local authorities shows that for every £1 spent with a small or mediumsized business 63p stayed in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business. High streets populated with thriving independent businesses boost the prices of nearby homes.
shops often support local artists, food producers and growers, so you’re often buying products that are unique to the area where you live.
2. Creates local jobs When you shop at, and invest in, your local business, you will help create employment in the local community.
4. Quality of Service Local business owners provide a much better quality of service because they are passionate about their service and really care about their customers. Local shop owners often go above and beyond the call of duty. Local shopkeepers listen to our individual needs and requirements … if they don't have it in, I bet they offer to get it by your next visit!
3. Better shopping experience Buying from your local shop is so much more rewarding, you get to know the local faces, these are the people we get to know and trust, and who often take the time to give us great advice. Independent shops often stock items which are made locally and aren’t available elsewhere. Local
5. Building Communities Communities can be defined by the local shops and businesses and the personalities of the owners who run them. Recently, the local area has enjoyed an influx of new businesses opening, such as Arabellas, Head2Head, and GGM Accountancy moving to the centre.

Tom N FARMING
Farmer
Who are the farmer’s servants? … geology and chemistry, the quarry of the air, the water of the brook, the lightning of the cloud, the castings of the worm, the plough of the frost. Ralph Waldo Emerson
ovember is the month that farming gets technical. On the third of the month is the East of England Farming Conference here in Peterborough with the theme “Tomorrow’s World; Rising to the Challenge”. On the same day, the World Agri-Tech Investment Summit in London showcasing the most exciting innovations agricultural technology. The REAP conference on Wednesday 9th November in Cambridge focuses on how biological (broadly soil ecosystemfocused) farming has helped soil and plant health in Wisconsin, USA, and all that week is Agri-Tech week starting on 7 November, this year focusing on agricultural waste processing, and maximising pea and bean yields. I’ll miss all this, however, as I’ve been generously sponsored by the East of England Agricultural Society to attend the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth conference in Singapore examining how we ‘Bridge the Rural-Urban Divide’. I’ll
share more of this in future notes, and on social media, however my point is that never has an industry better encompassed the phrase ‘Think Global, Act Local’. Though coined 100 years ago in town planning, it is agriculture today that thinks globally in following the best examples from across the globe, sharing information across international borders, and operating with global environmental concern, and yet acting locally, focusing all its energy on each farmer’s own, small patch of land. On our farm, we’re looking at soil analysis testing developed in USA and championed in Australia, we’re investigating tillage techniques first embraced in Argentina, and we’re working to conserve the skylark (we have loads), lapwing, woodcock, grey partridge, fieldfare, yellowhammer, linnet and more. And yet 100% of our activity is focused on a few fields to the west of Peterborough. We can all ‘think globally, act locally’. Here’s three ways:
1. Go to www.sustainweb.org and see how you can change your fish eating habits, for example swapping cod for UK-landed pollack, coley, hake or whiting, all of which haven’t been overfished like cod. 2. Look for the Red Tractor logo when you go to the supermarket, signifying that produce is from the UK, and has been farmed to a high standard of welfare and stewardship. 3. Where you can, buy your food from a local fishmonger, butcher, or greengrocer, who will know the origin of their goods. Or better still, buy direct from a local, trusted farmer, like, er…me! …and this month, don’t forget to look out for lovely, seasonal, ABC’s – that’s apples, Brussels sprouts, cabbages. And pumpkins, pheasant, duck, venison, parsnips, kale. Have a great November. Enjoy Bonfire Night, but do be careful if there are farm animals and pets nearby.

Garden A
view
ctually, in spite of the improvements in fancy fencing panels over the years, there really is nothing nicer than a well kept hedge. Suburban hedgerows not only soften an otherwise built-up landscape, they provide a lifeline for the wildlife which lives in towns and cities. Hedges provide shelter, privacy and - if chosen for fruit and flowers - food. Even the much maligned Leyland cypress has a part to play. It can provide a brilliant buffer against traffic noise for a start, and will screen unsightly views very quickly. Unfortunately it can easily become an out-of-control monster if left unchecked. Some have reached 36m/120ft!
Garden boundaries are emotive subjects. There have been any number of feuds between neighbours over this very issue down the years and the main cause of aggro seems to be the humble hedge.
The trick with Leylandii is to remove their tops about 1m/3ft before they reach the desired height then clip them twice a year: once in April, once in September. This keeps them looking very smart but makes them rather highmaintenance hedges. Fortunately there are many slower growing hedging plants which don’t require such intensive care. On the whole, it’s best to choose a hedge which is in keeping with the style of your house and the area in which you live. So smart Victorian terraces look great fronted by evergreen privet or box while rural properties might consider a more natural hedge of holly, hawthorn, beech, rowan and blackthorn. While not entirely
evergreen, a mixed hedge like this will provide beautiful autumn colour and plentiful food for wildlife. I’ve seen gorgeous fuchsia hedges on my trips to the south coast, while slow-growing Yew is attractive and works well on poor, chalky soils. Euonymus does well even in polluted areas or coastal regions plagued by salt winds. November is a great time to plant a new hedge. No matter which type you choose, the secret of success lies in the soil preparation. Dig over the ground thoroughly and don’t skimp on the organic matter. Decide on the planting line and dig out a trench about 12 inches/30cm deep. Fill the base with well-rotted manure or
THIS MONT hedge H s
compost then replace the soil, adding in more organic matter as you go. Make sure you mulch around the young plants to help suppress weeds and retain moisture. You can trim the hedge even when it is young. It encourages stronger growth and a denser hedge structure. Plus a well maintained hedge will ensure that you and your neighbours stay on good terms for years to come. By Rachael Leverton

Cat facts • Cats are obligate carnivores which means they cannot survive on a vegetarian diet. • Cats have no biological requirement for companionship like dogs or humans they are quite happy on their own. • Cats do not form structured packs like dogs and there is no dominance hierarchy among a group of cats. • Sharing territory with another cat can be extremely stressful. • The cat is the ultimate survivor! If their territory is not providing what is necessary then they will often move on to another. • Cats respond well to routine and predictability. This reduces stress and improves the cats quality of life. • A house with lots of cats needs lots of feeding stations as cats prefer to eat alone. • Site water bowls away from feeding stations. • Do not use plastic or metal bowls as this can taint the water always use wide ceramic bowls filled to the brim so that cats can lap from the top. • Cats enjoy eating 10 - 16 times a day the equivalent of 23 calories a time.
• Cats are lactose intolerant so should never be given human dairy products. • Cats must scratch to maintain their claws and mark their territory; if provisions are not provided then they will scratch furniture. Tall scratching stations are best so they can stretch up high. • Cats are driven to keep their coats in tip top condition; this can mean that they will groom off poisonous substances which they would normally avoid. • Prolonged eye contact with your cat is a threatening and assertive signal so should be avoided. • Like all mammals, cats are fast learners. • Cats, unlike dogs, are not domesticated, in the sense that selective breeding has had very little impact on the basic patterns of the cat’s behaviour. • Allowing a cat to come to you rather than vice versa, is a good way to ensure you will be viewed in a positive light. • There are 8-9 million cats in the UK and this number is growing. • Cats are becoming Britain’s most popular pet.

teve and Gareth have grown the business over the last 12 years and have turned Trains4U into one of the largest specialist model stores in the East of England. With an impressive showroom spread over two floors, customers can choose from thousands of products. It is no wonder Trains4U is the place to go to for modellers, wargamers and railway enthusiasts. Trains4U doesn’t only stock model railways, they also stock Airfix , construction kits from a variety of brands, Games Workshop, model making materials, such as balsa wood, plastic and metals, paints, glues, scenic materials, tools and the largest range of Scalextric in Cambridgeshire. especially for those on a budget or looking for something unusual, perhaps even as a reminder of their childhood. Trains4U also purchase and part-exchange used model railways, unmade plastic kits, Scalextric cars and collectable diecasts, so you could make some cash from those old models in the loft! Trains4U’s team of knowledgeable and friendly staff are always happy to help, whether offering guidance on the right gift for a friend or relative, advice on how to start a new model railway, or demonstrating the latest digital control systems and sound-onboard models. With their expert team you can be sure of excellent service. There is free parking outside the door, it is easy to drop by and pay a visit, perhaps even leaving with inspiration for a new hobby!

It’s never too early or late to learn, and the guitar is easily the best and most enjoyable instrument to play, in my completely unbiased opinion. Regardless of whether you’re a beginner, or have an advanced knowledge of the guitar, I can work with you to become the guitarist that you want to be. If you want to play rock, pop, metal, classical, jazz, etc, it’s doable. The guitar is an incredibly versatile instrument, suitable for all styles of music.
I've been teaching guitar and bass for ten years, and now teach ukulele too! I’ve worked with students of all abilities, all ages, and even students who struggle to speak English. I also have a Music Degree, which I earned back in 2011, and I’m DBS checked. As well as educating myself in music, I've also spent a lot of time performing as a guitarist with bands, in various countries.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, or even just for guitar related advice 07972 590152

Just Nails Every woman likes to look her best and a relatively inexpensive and simple way to do so is to step up on your nail care regime. For all of us who are not blessed with long, perfectly formed and strong nails we have to cheat a bit. Nail biting is a problem that lots of women suffer from and causes nails to become unattractive and brittle. This is why the fake nail business has taken off in the way that it has. It boosts a woman’s confidence to look down at her hands and see a perfectly polished set of nails gleaming back at her. Not to mention the pleasure of receiving compliments on your beautiful talons. Michelle established Just Nails 9 years ago and offers LCN Nails as well as Gelish Nails. LCN stands for Light Concept Nails, and is a material that is as strong as acrylic and looks like a gel. Gel nails are commonly known as the safest form of fake nails as they do not chip off easily and are durable due to the gel. LCN Nails can last up to 4 weeks.
Just Nails also offers a Paraffin Wax why not compliment your LCN or Gelish nails with a Paraffin Wax? As a special offer, this will be just £10 when booked with your nail appointment. Skinny Tan is the first self-tanner that combines a natural tanning active with naturally derived skin smoothing actives to tan, contour and reduce the visible signs of cellulite. All Skinny Tan products are free from animal testing, free from parabans and use naturally derived tanning and cellulite actives. Just leaving a beautiful healthy smooth looking skin. Or, for that last minute invitation when you need to tan quickly, there is the 30 minute tan. Yes it really does develop in 30 minutes, ready to shower off and you are good to go! Eyebrow shapes: how to get the best brows for your face
before
We all know that defined eyebrows can instantly make you look polished and put together, if they’re sculpted to suit your particular face. The pros of having the perfect eyebrows speak for themselves, it will give you an instant facelift!
A
nd this is where the ancient art of threading, which originated in the Indian subcontinent, offers a natural, safe, simple and fast method of facial hair removal and eyebrow shaping, providing an effective alternative to waxing and tweezing. A cotton thread is used in a twisting motion to trap and lift hair right out of the follicle. It’s a gentler way of removing unwanted facial hair. Becky, a regular customer at Unique Brows in Yaxley, will be the first to vouch for this ancient technique. “Having started threading my eyebrows about 6 years ago I would not go back to other techniques. Threading gives my eyes great definition. Rina offers a friendly and professional service and always makes me feel comfortable. I have complete confidence in Rina’s professional judgement who always provides attention to detail and lasting results.” Whilst threading provides definition, eyelash and eyebrow tinting gives further boldness, and eyelash extensions add extra beauty and elegance.
Rina is a qualified beauty professional with over two decades of experience in facial beauty and has recently made the decision to open her own business, Unique Brows. “I wanted to give my clients a much more personal service, free of distractions, and to also expand the range of services I could offer”. Rina has been in Yaxley for 16 years and is married with two sons. Unique Brows offers a full range of facial beauty – threading, eyelash and eyebrow tinting, eyelash perming and extensions, and facial waxing – as well as waxing treatments for arms and legs and Indian head massage.

Minute morning workout for busy people We can all struggle at times to balance a healthy life with our busy schedules but I’ve found the perfect morning weight loss plan for you if you’re short for time during your day. Losing weight doesn’t take as much time as you think and if you don’t want to spend hours slogging at the gym then this is the workout programme for you. 10 knee push-ups
10 calf raise on stairs (both legs)
Begin with your knees on the floor and your body straight. Start to lower yourself until your chest is close to touching the floor, then you need push yourself back up. Repeat 10 times.
Place your feet half on and half off the stairs. Drop until you feel a stretch in your calf muscle, then raise your body back up. Try holding onto something in front of you for balance.
10 chair squats
10 bicycle crunches
For this you will need a chair. Stand in front of a chair, sit down, then rise. Do not use your arms whilst doing this and always keep a slight inwards curve to your lower back. Tense your bum and legs throughout.
Lie on the floor with your hands behind your head. Raise your legs so your thighs are vertical with the ground and your calves are parallel to the ground and touch your right elbow to your left knee and your left elbow to your right knee.
Happy workout, makes for happy people!

Cosmic Katie‘ s Stars COMMUNITY NEWS
November 2016
By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer
Pisces February 20-March 20
More people than you think are watching what you say and do, so try not to act in a way you will regret later. Your life is changing on so many levels right now and it’s important you maintain control and don’t allow others to take it from you. You’re particularly susceptible to emotional blackmail. Beware.
Aries March 21-April 20 Try not to judge new faces too quickly, but allow them to reveal themselves at their own pace. This month, some really strong and lasting friendships will be made, but your need to rush is only going to cause problems for you. Younger people prove expensive but are sure to remember your kindness as the year closes.
Taurus April 21-May21
Travel is being planned, but just check what you have already spent as it could be that you have to delay your arrangements in order to do them in the style your sign demands. A new face in the workplace links to a change you have long desired, but so far never been able to achieve.
Gemini May 22-June 22 Try to think of how your actions are affecting your close ones, as you may have been acting without really thinking and, if you’re not careful, it’s going to come back on you. The written word can save you time and money on two important projects. It’s worth putting money into the home now. Cancer June 23-July 23 Are you making more out of current problems than is necessary, or do you really need to shake up and organise your personal circle and issues? It seems that some fine tuning is needed, and the sooner you’re more honest about what you want and need, the sooner you’ll find out if loved ones can give it to you or not.
Leo July 24-August 23 You’ve had a lot to deal with lately, but you haven’t done a very good job of delegating and it’s only by asking others for help that they will give it to you. News in your career gives you reason to plan several journeys in the weeks ahead. This is gearing up to be a progressive and exciting time. Virgo August 24-September 23 There seems to be a distance which has developed between you and a close one and you don’t seem to know what to about it. Be yourself is the answer. Stop trying to create an atmosphere to prove a point. They want normality back as much as you do! Speed is of the essence at work, but stay focussed.
Libra September 24-October 23 Stress is evident in your chart and you may find it hard to know who you can trust in business. If you want a job done well, then do it yourself as no one is going to be working to the high standards you’ll be keeping this month. A new attraction in love leaves you with some big decisions to make.
Scorpio October 24-November 22
This is a great month to tie up loose ends and to deal with difficult faces, for you’ll be thinking and speaking with clarity. News from far away helps you to realise that the world is a bigger place than you thought. It also offers you options for the future you’d never previously thought were a possibility.
Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Those you thought you knew well could soon surprise you with the announcements they make. You thought you were working as part of a team, but other’s actions now could prove that you are not. Don’t worry, you will soon see that this was a blessing in disguise. Strive for balance with work and home life.
Capricorn December 22-January 20 You may have to invest either financially or emotionally in something you have not really got your heart in. Bide your time and do a little more research, as with a few more conversations you can find a happy medium to suit all parties. Cash flow could be a problem, so only commit to what is most important. Aquarius January 21-February 19 Passion is strong in your chart and you start to take more of an interest in you again -You’re back on form and in your dramatic mode. You now know how far is too far to go and, with these restraints in place, you’ll start to enjoy life again. This month is well starred for love and romance.
Winter car care with Excel Auto Care With shorter days and colder weather approaching us, it’s important to keep up to date with your car maintenance to prevent breakdowns or even accidents. Excel Auto Care offer free winter health checks to ensure you and your family don’t get caught out Here are a few essential tips to keep you safe this winter: Tyres should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety and check tyre pressure regularly. Battery - the most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of a breakdown. Antifreeze Check the coolant level and if required, topup with the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection.
Fuel keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delays or traffic. Lights check and clean all lights regularly to make sure you can see and be seen clearly. Carry spare bulbs, your garage will be able to provide the correct sort. Windscreen reduce dazzle from the winter sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Ask your garage to check if wiper blades need renewing. Screen wash use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather. Carry de-icer with you. Locks and door seals help prevent doors freezing shut with a thin coat of Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of WD-40 in locks will help stop them freezing.

Neighbourhood watch The Neighbourhood Watch scheme has been developed as a partnership to bring people together to make their communities safer. The Yaxley Neighbourhood Watch Facebook page has been well used recently. Issues relating to problems as well as crimes have been raised. Although bringing these to the attention of the wider community via the page is brilliant, anything crime or anti-socialbehaviour related should be reported to the police using the non-emergency number 101. I know there will be a cry of “but they won’t do anything”, they probably won’t be able to do anything this time, but by reporting it and getting it into the system, they have a better view of what is actually happening, so when resources are allocated they put it where it is needed, if they don’t know about crime and antisocial behaviour then they can’t allocate the resource to tackle it.
Speedwatch results from the first time out are as follows, by the time this is published there will have been some more scheduled times and these statistics will follow. In the 90 minutes we were checking speeds, we checked 281 vehicles of which 10 were classed as reportable. The highest speed recorded was 42mph. This check was undertaken on Broadway which is a 30mph limit. In the meantime, we are looking for more volunteers for Yaxley Neighbourhood Watch and Community Speedwatch. If you would like to join or find out more information, please join us at our next meeting or contact us via our website at www.yaxley.watch You can also engage in discussion on Facebook on both the Yaxley Neighbourhood Watch group and the Yaxley Gazette group.
