Welcome to the October issue of the Yaxley Gazette. As we increasingly learn to face the wrath of global warming, it is fascinating to gain more insight into an historical journey by local pastoral people who challenged the force of nature and the hugely significant impact of draining Whittlesea Mere, and how this has dramatically shaped our fenland story to this day. You can discover more about England’s Lost Lake on page 17. The battle continues in earnest as lone crusader Drew Pontikis also wages war against an angry planet ... well, hornets, to be precise. Read it and weep on page 7. On the subject of buzzing, there’s news of businesses coming to Yaxley. Our community is really thriving and it is great to be a part of it. Always let us know if you are investing in the local area, it would be good to hear your story. We’d also like to learn about your triumphs and achievements as a community, charity work, forthcoming events and any information that you wish to share with our readers. The Yaxley Festival might still be months ahead, but the planning is well underway. We introduce two more of the bands that will be performing on page 27. Thanks again for your continued support.

In 1964 the Pru had 20,000 agents but now sadly they no longer do home insurance visits. Afternoon tea was then served and enjoyed by the members. Next month on Thursday 13 October at 2.30pm we have a highly recommended speaker, Marie Carden, who will speak about ‘Dogs for Good’ (Assistance Dogs for the Disabled). This will be an open meeting with no age limit and everyone is welcome to attend. Farcet Scarecrow Trail Coming to our village on the weekend of 8 / 9 October is Farcet Scarecrow Trail and Yard Sales.

by Drew Pontikis

There aren’t too many things that I’m scared of – spiders, darkness, male pattern baldness; I’m untroubled by any of these common phobias. I have, however, mentioned before that I am terrified by wasps. Bees I have made my peace with; I’ve got no beef with what are basically nature’s flower power loving hippies, as long as they stay away from me. Wasps, on the other hand, are just flying nuggets of stripy nastiness, intent only on stealing anything delicious you may have about your person and spoiling family trips to theme parks. You can imagine then my unhappiness when my wife called me upstairs one evening saying there’s a wasp in the bathroom and to come and get rid of it. Unhappily, I trudged up the stairs, rolled magazine in hand, cursing the wife on my way past and OH MY DAYS THERE IS A DIRTY GREAT HORNET IN MY BATHROOM! A huge, flying torpedo of horror,

buzzing round my bathroom light, sounding like a helicopter and THERE’S ANOTHER ONE SITTING ON THE WALL NEAR MY FACE! In my entire life, this was the worst thing that has ever happened to me. So began a 20 minute battle of attrition between me and two hornets. The odds were evened quite early on when one flew out of the window of its own accord, whilst the other sat watching me in the corner of the room. There was no way that I was going to swat it unless I was 100% sure it was going to die; the thought of having an angry hornet out for revenge was too much for me to cope with. I was shaking. I was sweating. My wife, in a way that only wives can in times of

stress, was telling me to hurry up as she wanted to go to bed. It once flew at me and I ran out in the hallway screaming like a girl, leaving only my dignity behind. Then it landed in the middle of the wall. Screaming, I smacked it so hard I thought I’d take the tiles off the wall. My ordeal finally over, I ran and shut the window, worried that the other might come back with its mates, and then spent the next two hours trying to calm down and wondering who was going to play me in the movie. Just to be clear to everyone – if you see another hornet anywhere, don’t hesitate. Don’t ask questions. Just burn the whole village to the ground to be on the safe side.

Women born in the1950s have been unfairly prejudiced by state pension age changes The 1995 Conservative Government’s State Pension Act included plans to increase women’s state pension age from 60 to 65 so that it was the same as men’s. WASPI agrees with equalisation, but does not agree with the unfair way the changes were implemented. Because of the way the increases were brought in, hundreds of thousands of women born in the 1950s (on or after 6th April 1951) have been hit particularly hard. We are angry that we have been treated unfairly and unequally just because of the day we were born. Significant changes to the age we receive our state pension have been imposed upon us with a lack of appropriate notification, with little or no notice and much faster than we were promised – some of us have been hit by more than one increase.

As a result, hundreds of thousands of us are suffering financial hardship, with not enough time to re-plan for our retirement. Women are telling us that they can’t believe their retirement age has increased by 4, 5 or 6 years and they didn’t even know about it!! With no other source of income (until the 1990s many women weren’t allowed to join company pension schemes, many of us are carers or in poor health) securing work is proving impossible and zero contract hours or Job Seekers’ Allowance are the only alternative for many.

How have 1950s women been treated unfairly and unequally?

1950s women have been singled out for unfair and unequal treatment because of the way the increases to our state pension age have been brought in. Women of a similar age have to wait disproportionately longer for their pension - a ONE year difference in birthday can make an almost THREE year difference to state pension age. Letters were sent out to women born on or after 6 April 1951 - 5 April 1953 14 years after the 1995 Pensions Act Many women report receiving NO letter at all We are starting a local WASPI group to find out more email joan.wayland@btinternet.com or go online to the WASPI website: www.waspi.co.uk

Please help us make this a success by entering a scarecrow, with the theme of ‘historical icons’. There are prizes for the best scarecrows. You do not have to be in the village to enter but you will need to place your scarecrow in the village somewhere for viewing! This should be a great community event which will also include a BBQ and line dancing on the Saturday and harvest celebrations with the Salvation Army on the Sunday . This event is being organised by Farcet Salvation Army. You can pick up entry forms from Farcet Salvation Army or Farcet Post Office or contact Dawn on 07720 135059 / dawn. bristow@btinternet.com.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue

Winter is coming and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging all residents to get their chimney professionally swept before the cold sets in. Top tips to enjoy an open fire safely: • Sweep your chimney at least once a year and get brickwork inspected, especially the chimney breast and roof space. • Do not bank fires too high or overload the grate, and remember to let them burn down well and check the hearth before going to bed. • Use a fire or spark guard to prevent accidental fires. • Do not place objects on or over the mantle-piece which may cause you to stand too close to the fire to reach or use them. • Burn only suitable fuels and avoid burning resinous woods as soot builds up quickly. Above all, ensure you have a working smoke alarm fitted on each floor or your home and a carbon monoxide alarm installed. For more information on fire safety log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk, follow us on social media or call 01480 444500. Find us on Twitter, Facebook & Instagram

LEGAL ADVICE

Divorce & finance FAQs

Divorce & finance questions answered Q. Will I get spousal maintenance from my ex and if so, how much? A. Whether you get spousal maintenance and how much depends on various factors, including the length of your marriage, your own income or ability to work, and your age. If you are entitled to claim spousal maintenance (on top of child maintenance) this would be paid depending on your “needs”, not simply to give you with an equal income to your spouse in the future. Q. Are money, pensions and the house split 50/50 on divorce? A. Many factors will need to be considered before a division of assets can be agreed – for example; the needs of any children; fairness to both parties; the age of the parties; length of marriage; and the ability of the parties to work. There is no formula for financial settlements on divorce and no “one size fits all” answer. Couples may reach an agreement between themselves, they may ask solicitors

to negotiate on their behalf, attend mediation or ultimately allow a judge to decide. This really is a specialist area of family law and talking to an experienced family lawyer can really help. Q. What if the marital home is not in my name? A. It almost certainly makes no difference provided you’ve been married a while. All the assets of a marriage are considered to be joint, no matter whose name they are in. BUT it is very important that you take advice before you think about leaving the house as that will affect some important legal rights. Q. Can I change the locks? A. The general rule is that you should not change the locks on a jointly owned property as you are both entitled to have access. That said, we’d certainly encourage you to protect yourself, your children and your property in other ways, so if there is a genuine reason to be concerned about this, talk to a lawyer.

Children’s Flu Clinics 2016/2017 (Issues due to vaccine supply)

HEALTH MATTERS Flu jabs This year’s flu vaccination campaign will start in October. Two flu clinics are scheduled for: Saturdays 1 and 15 October between 9 - 11am. No appointment is necessary. The vaccination is available for all patients over the age of 65 and those in at risk groups, who have been routinely vaccinated in the past. Please bring your letter, email or SMS text message invitation with you, as this will speed up the booking in process and reduce queueing time.

IMPORTANT – Do not bring children to the Saturday flu clinics unless invited to do so. Children who require the flu vaccination/nasal spray flu vaccination this autumn will be carried out as follows:  • Healthy 2, 3 and 4 year old children will be vaccinated during the latter part of October and will be notified of clinics nearer the time  • At risk children will be called at a date to be arranged • Years 1, 2 and 3 will be  vaccinated within the school’s immunization programme as well as at risk children within those year group

London Road Dental Practice Dr Romeo Young BChD, MSC Ortho, PG Cert Dental Education

From 1 September 2016, Yaxley Group Practice started routinely sending SMS text messages and email reminders about upcoming appointments, clinic dates and other health related information, to all patients who have supplied mobile number and/or email address. It is a quick, efficient and environmentally friendly way for us to contact patients regarding important reminders/messages. Therefore, it is very important that we have your up-to-date contact information. You can update your contact details via ‘update your records’ on our website, in person, or by telephone on 01733240478 option 2 (we would appreciate if could call from 10am onwards to avoid a prolonged wait). Please be assured that we will not share your contact details or personal information with any third parties. If you do not wish to be contacted by SMS/email, please let us know and we will update your records. Again, this can be done online, by phone or in person. Remember you can change your mind regarding this any time and as many times as you like.

Ear Syringing Service The numbers of patients requiring ear syringing is increasing. As a result of this the amount of nurse time taken up to do this is limiting appointments being made available for other things. Ear wax is a common problem which can be easily managed at home with simple measures. Ear syringing can be fairly traumatic to the lining of the ear canal and can lead to infections and pain. Therefore, we are encouraging patients to use an over the counter remedy such as: 1. Self syringing kits like the Otex

Combi which breaks up and disperses ear wax is much gentler and is easy to use. 2. Or Sodium Bicarbonate or Otex Ear Drops - these ear drops are used to soften dry or hardened earwax. If neither remedy works for you then syringing is still available.

The Bobby Scheme is now in the old Yaxley Police Station We have two Bobby security advisors who visit people over the age of 60 and victims of domestic abuse victims. They fit security devices such as door chains, window alarms, locks etc, as well as offering advice to give them confidence and reassurance and help reduce their fear of crime. The scheme also visits older, vulnerable and disabled people to reduce the chance of them becoming victims, reduce their fear of crime and provide peace of mind. Key safes can be fitted, allowing carers to gain access to residents who wish to stay in their own homes and live independently. We also work in partnership with the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and carry out a

home fire safety check at every visit and fit smoke alarms where necessary. The service we offer to victims is free of charge. As a small charity we are continually seeking funding to support the work we do. Last year we helped over 1400 residents across the county, more than half lived alone and many were over the age of 80. Without donations and other external funding our work cannot continue. It costs the charity on average £130 to work at each home. For non victims we ask for a minimum donation of £30.

We would also be happy to come along and give talks to local groups. If you know of anyone who would benefit from a visit by The Bobby Scheme, please call our office on 07866 602100 or 01480 413311.

HOT OFF THE PRESS ....

It seems Yaxley is the place to be, as over the last few weeks there has been lots of talk about new businesses coming to the local area. It might be cooling down outside but Yaxley is hotting up! Rob Tyler, owner of the well known Head 2 Head Barbers is taking over a unit in the Shopping Centre, plus a new vets will be coming to Yaxley very soon. Also, Arabellaz Beauty and Nail Salon has recently opened. For more information on all they have to offer you, please see page 29.

Stallholders needed

Yaxley based cyclists Andy Bell, Dave Murfitt and James Warrener joined forces with Ian Gilchrist of Alconbury for a recent trip to the high Alps of France. The riders had long term ambitions to scale a number of the mountains made popular by the Tour de France each summer. James told us “I have waited to get into the Alps since I was at Stanground School. I loved the atmosphere, scenery and good weather.

Some of the drops were a bit scary for a bloke from the fens though!” He added “The people we met couldn’t believe that they could live 3,000 feet above sea level while we lived on the cusp of being below it!”

Knitting donation for dementia Patients at Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals have been given a generous donation from a local knitter.

Freefall in love with YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Margaret Long

Alison Gray Dementia Nurse

Margaret Long, from Yaxley, has been working hard to make the knitted sensory bands which provide a distraction for patients with dementia or learning disabilities. The bands, which are tube-shaped and non-restricted, have buttons inside and are used by patients with dementia or learning disabilities. This diverts their attention by fiddling with the buttons rather than the tube administering medication. Alison Gray, Dementia Specialist Nurse, said: “We would like to thank Margaret for her hard work and kind donation. St Peter’s Church I am writing this on the day when David Cameron has announced that he is stepping down as an MP. Just a few hours after his announcement the BBC website had an article headed up: Into the Sunset: Charity, academia, obscurity. Life after No 10. This article looked at the options for Mr Cameron going forward and looked at some of the experiences of his predecessors on leaving 10 Downing Street. The implications of the article were that life is going to be pretty tough for Mr Cameron for the next few years. This article reminded me of a letter I received about a year after I gave up my career as an accountant to train to be a Vicar. A letter came on headed notepaper from the institute of accountants I had previously been a member of. The letter was addressed to “The estate of the late Mr Jonathan Randall”. I wrote back (having decided not to employ a ghost writer) and said that I was very

pleased to report that there was indeed life after accountancy. I didn’t get a response, but later discovered that a computer error had caused the institute to assume that everyone who gave up a career in accountancy had died! Life presents its challenges to us all. A change of career, leaving 10 Downing Street, a new school, retirement and other events can cause considerable uncertainty in our lives. We can either worry about the future or we can choose to make the best of where we currently are. Jesus discourages us from worrying by asking which of us is able to add an hour to our life by doing so. Rather Jesus encourages us to live for the Kingdom of God and for the things which will have eternal value. One of the many privileges of being a Vicar is that I am often asked to conduct funerals. When I ask the family to describe their loved ones it’s rare that their job is mentioned. Even less often

do I hear how much money or property the person had. Rather, people tell me about the personality of their relative, their characteristics, how (s)he showed their love for family or friends, treasured memories and much more. We most remember our relatives by who they were rather the material things they owned. In other words it’s those attributes of eternal value which we most treasure. May all of us live to store up treasure which has eternal value. You are all welcome to join us at St Peter’s or any other local church at any service. If you would like details of our services or any of the other activities in and around the church then please contact me or visit our website. One event which you might like to attend is at St Peter’s on Friday 7 October at 7.30pm. It’s a concert by Duo Diez (violin and guitar). For tickets please call 01832 274734 or visit www.oundlefestival.org.uk.

Nobody should face cancer alone and we would love you join us at the Chapel at 10 am. to help this worthy cause. Those of you that joined us for the Queen’s Birthday Strawberry Tea will know that we are pretty good at making rather delicious cakes. If you have just moved to the Village it’s a good way to meet new friends too. Our Junior Church is held at 10.30 a.m. every Sunday. The children stay with the congregation for the first part of the Service and then go upstairs with our Youth Leader, Heather, to learn, while having fun, about Jesus. They join us again at the end of the Service to show us what they have been doing. SAFETY ADVICE

As the nights pull in – make sure your elderly neighbours aren’t left in the dark

by Eileen Le Voi

At this point in the year, we start to think about the dawn of a new season – autumn. Along with its rich colours, crisp walks and atmospheric sunlight also comes darker nights, colder weather and later this month – Halloween, heralding trick or treaters.

Share these tips with family and friends, and older relatives:

s the nights start to gradually pull in, and with the clocks going back at the end of October, now is the idea time to get into the habit of keeping an eye on an older friend or neighbour. The winter months can be lonely and isolating for those who are less mobile; a knock at the door after dark can be frightening and cold callers on the phone can leave the recipient feeling vulnerable.

about yourself on social media  Set your privacy settings  Keep your media profiles, such as Facebook and LinkedIn to a minimum (your name) and don’t post your address or date of birth  Be very cautious about giving out personal information to people you don’t know – age, address, phone number etc  In public places make sure nobody can hear your conversations or look over your shoulder when banking, shopping or making other confidential online transactions.

A

The situation isn’t helped by the many rogue traders who try to tout for work in the local area, often suggesting to the home owner that a roof or gutting are in need of repair before winter sets in. This can lead to vulnerable people parting with their cash, and getting nothing but shoddy work and a huge dent in their savings in return. Then there are phone scams, which may on the surface seem to be less intrusive, but are equally as dangerous. These can range from callers claiming to be from companies to check non- existent faults on your computer, banks claiming to check your account details and even socalled medical companies suggesting the need for mobile aid from electric chairs to stair lifts.

With winter on the way, maybe now is a good time to join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme within your community. Safe Local Trades, covering the PE Postcode area, has worked with many local Neighbourhood Watch groups over the years – including those in Yaxley and Cardea - providing numerous lamp-post signs as well as giving free talks on the dangers of doorstep callers and other scams. It has been proven that areas which operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by crime, rogue traders and distraction burglars. Don’t be fooled by rogue or cowboy traders making an offer that seems too good to be true – as it most probably is.

 Be careful what you say

If you live or know anyone in the PE Postcode area who would like to inquire about obtaining free Neighbourhood Watch lamp-post signs, please email eileen@safelocaltrades.com or for advice visit http://www.safelocaltrades.com/consumers/advice/your-neighbourhood-neighbourhoodwatch Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval. Go to www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone 01733 530019.

HISTORY

The German polymath Friedrich Schiller is perhaps best known for his work “An die Freude”, a text that Beethoven famously dissected and set to music for the final choral movement of his 9th symphony.

England’s Lost Lake T

he text of ‘Ode to Joy’ as it is more commonly known, is regarded by many as the greatest literary and musical expression of universal brotherhood but what is far less known, is Schiller’s quasi-ode to the people of the Fens, quoted by J.M Heathcote in the preface to his 1876 tome, Reminiscenses of Fen and Mere: “a pastoral people, inhabiting a neglected corner of Europe, which by industry they have won from the waters of the ocean; the sea their profession, the source of their wealth and their disquietude; their highest good, their glory, and their virtue have all sprung from poverty and freedom.” It is my belief that the story of these people, of their ingenuity and industry, can be encapsulated in a single story – the drainage of the Whittlesea Mere. The term epoch-making event is often overused, but the affairs of 1851 in many ways justify such a label. Indeed, scientists are now debating the scientific criteria for a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene, or the age of man, the point at which human activities began to have a significant global impact on the planet’s geology and ecosystems.

It was 1851 and Prince Albert and Henry Cole’s grand theatre of nationalism, the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations at Crystal Palace was proving to be immensely popular. Whilst the public flocked to view countless tableau depicting the Empire’s cultural and industrial prowess, a fellowship of gentlemen from the Fens had only one destination in mind – the Hall of Machinery and Mechanical Inventions. William Wells of Holme and his team of adventurers and investors had travelled to Hyde Park to look at the revolutionary centrifugal pump, and to meet its inventor, George Appold. This technological marvel promised to arm its officers with the ability to discharge water at an unprecedented rate and transform a landscape of bog into fertile agricultural land. Their target was the watery expanse was the Whittlesea Mere, a vast area of open water in the parish of Holme, close to the Fen Edge. In 1702, the travels of Celia Fiennes took in the view of the mere and she described it “like some sea it being so high and of great length; this is in part of the ffenny country and is called Whitlsome Mer, is 3 mile broad and six long”. Whilst that observation, specifically

the dimensions are perhaps dubious, the epic size of the lake is illustrated in the famous silk map of 1786, produced by the Stilton cartographer John Bodger. The panel beneath the map, exquisitely penned by Bodger’s own hand describes the mere as “One of the greatest curiosities in this Kingdom, being a most spacious and beautiful fresh-water lake, on which have been exhibited several Regattas, at which were present many Thousands of Nobility, Gentry, and Others, from various Parts, who were accommodated with upwards of 700 sailing Vessels and Boats”. And so the drainage began. The steam engineers Easton and Amos were commissioned to erect the pump and engine to drain the Whittlesea Mere. After coupling the pump to a 25 horsepower steam engine, tweaks to the equipment raised the performance of the pump from a 74 tons per minute discharge rate to 101 tons. This performance could drain an inch of water from an acre of land every minute. Having existed since approximately 800BCE, the great lake was quickly tamed. Though subsequent floods and bank breaches in the following years would temporarily restore the mere, the landscape was changed

By Stewart Howe

irrevocably. The famous Holme posts, driven into the ground by William Wells to measure the rate of peat shrinkage, graphically illustrate how the parched land has become the lowest place beneath sea level in the United Kingdom. As we move into the 21st Century, the Great Fen promises to at least partially restore the habitat of the land in and around the Whittlesea Mere. As the work of William Wells has been labelled “an act of ecological vandalism”, there were dissenters when this new millennium project was first unveiled. Yet, increasingly the agricultural community has come to embrace the work that offers regional benefits in the form of economic diversification and the introduction of a tourist economy for settlements along the Fen Edge. The age of the Anthropocene is upon us and once again, with the turn of Appold’s impeller blade, a new chapter is being written in our landscape heritage. Whether scientists opt to measure the impact of humanity upon our planet in radioactive isotopes or by the deeds of a pastoral people who dared to challenge nature, one thing is certain – our local history has helped to shape the modern world.

Yaxley Infants At Yaxley Infant School it was lovely to hear the exciting stories of the adventures that everyone had got up to over the summer holiday and to see their lovely smiling faces again as they returned at the start of the Autumn Term. We have also welcomed our new Foundation Stage children this week who are starting to settle in and make new friends as well as be reacquainted with some old ones. In Key Stage One the children will be finding out all about our world

through the topic ‘Environmental Extravaganza’. The Year One children have been assisting ‘Mrs Gardener’ who wrote to the children asking for their help as she has lost all of her plants. She knew they were the home to many minibeasts and she wondered if the children would help her find them. The children were, of course, happy to assist. The Year two children, meanwhile, have been thinking about questions that they would like to know the answers to. They include “What do butterflies

do all the time?” and “Why do centipedes have poisonous front claws?” If you have a child who is due to start school in September 2017 and would like to visit the specialist early years school in the village we will be holding an open week from 14-18 November. Please call the school office on 01733 240918 to make an appointment and come and see us in action to find out what makes us so special. We look forward to meeting you and your child.

next year. The staff and children are enjoying making the room their own. We are holding a Halloween Spooktacular on 16 October in Austin Hall, Main Street from 4pm to 6pm. There will be fun and games and a competition for the best

MONEY MATTERS by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest we will publish them here.

Paper Self-Assessment Tax Return: The 2015-16 tax return deadline for taxpayers who continue to submit paper Self-Assessment returns is 31 October 2016. Late submission of a Self-Assessment return will become liable to a £100 late filing penalty. The penalty will apply even if there is no liability or if any tax due is paid in full by 31 January 2017. We would recommend that anyone still submitting paper tax returns consider the benefits of submitting the returns electronically. In this way they will benefit from an additional three months (until 31 January 2017) in which to file their return. Taxpayers with certain underpayments in the 2015-16 tax year can elect to have this amount collected via their tax code (in 2017-18), provided they are in employment or in receipt of a UK-based pension. The coding adjustment applies to certain debts and the amount of debt that can be coded out ranges from £3,000 to £17,000 based on a graduated scale. The maximum coding out allowance only applies to taxpayers with earnings exceeding £90,000. Daily penalties of £10 per day will apply if the tax return is still outstanding three months after the filing date up to a maximum of £900. If the return still remains outstanding further higher penalties will be charged from six months and twelve months. Taxpayers that received a letter informing them that they have to submit a paper return after 30 July 2016 have an extended deadline which runs for three months from the date they received the letter to submit a paper return.

e spent the previous six years in an office based from Gemma’s house about a half a mile away from our new location -- our old office served us well, and we made great memories there, but we couldn't be more excited about our new space. The new office is actually an old Barclays bank, putting us right in the centre of Maltings Square, Broadway Shopping Centre. We're excited about the complete transformation we have made as you can see and all have been involved in the decor and layout. The front of the unit we have sublet to Arrabellaz which is a brand new Beauticians which we ourselves look forward to visiting. While we were happy with our space, there were several motivating factors to make a move: 1. Space. When we first moved into our last office, there was only Gemma and Diane with plenty of room. When we left, there were four of us and space was getting very tight. The new

office offers a lot more square footage, but more importantly it allowed us to rethink our layout. We were able to start from scratch by knocking down walls and putting up others that better fit our team and how we’re growing. Overall, we now have more of an open plan as well as a separate meeting room and reception and kitchen area which betters us as well as our clients. 1. Visibility. In our last office, we were working from Gemma’s home . While we really liked our neighbours, we lived a pretty anonymous existence only seeing existing clients. There was no way for anyone in the community outside of that building to know we existed, and we’re hoping our new location right in the centre of Broadway Shopping Centre will help bolster our visibility in the area and help us more quickly come to mind as local businesses see us.

1. Location. What a difference half a mile makes. Our last office was from home and although separate to the main house meant home and work life often integrated. The new space is in the main shopping precinct where Gemma can now actually drive to a work place. We all look forward to meeting and seeing new and old Yaxley faces and as advocates for this community we’re excited that our office location now furthers that commitment.

It has been an exciting and busy six years for GGM, and we look at this new location as the start of another chapter in our history. We’re still working on getting settled in and adding artwork to the walls, but we’re incredibly excited to be in the new space. Thanks for everyone’s support through the years and with the office move.

Need advice on your pensions? Looking after our clients is at the heart of Heartstone With all the recent changes in pensions rules people have been confused by the various options. We have been able to help many new clients understand these changes and we would like to share the thoughts of one of them. Dont just take our word for it! “I needed advice on my pensions. Wayne explained my options and listened to, and answered my questions making sure I understood. I found him very approachable and I am very pleased with the whole experience. I would not hesitate to recommend him. His fees I found were very competitive. He made, what seemed to me at first a daunting experience, a pleasurable and informative experience.”

A big thank you to our mystery client who left this lovely review on a national website! If we can help with your pension or investment questions, give Wayne or Helen Clark a call - we aim to please!

PETS

Remember, remember ... YOUR PETS this November! Imagine you’re snuggled up for the night at home, then BANG! It comes from nowhere. BANG! The room flashes. Where’s it coming from?

A

nother room might be safe. BANG! It’s here too! You’re scared, you’re confused. BANG! Run to find the family just to be told, ‘get down’. BANG, FLASH! It’s everywhere! None of your usual places are safe but you find something to hide underneath and cower low to the floor, hoping that whatever it is won’t hurt you. This is the experience many pets have this time of year – firework season. The bangs and crackles of the displays can be bewildering and terrifying for animals. There are many ways pets show they are stressed:

• Trembling and shaking • Toileting in the house • Inter-animal tension • Excessive vocalisation • Pacing and panting • Refusing to eat • Hiding • Clinging to owner A staggering 80% of pet owners have a pet who is scared this time of year with dogs far more likely to suffer. Fireworks are no longer restricted to a few nights a year, instead displays are held at any time over the winter season. Sound phobias in dogs can spiral downwards and with no let up. Some animals struggle to cope and can take months to get back to their normal selves.

Preparation is key Managing an animal with sound phobia can be challenging and can be approached with three methods; specialist products, behavioural preparation and with common sense. Specialist products – pheromone diffusers and natural ingredients in a capsule designed to help to calm the animal. These products are most effective when given for at least a month before the fireworks start. For extreme cases a vet may prescribe a sedative for the safety of the animal and their owner. Behavioural preparation – firework fear doesn’t just go away on its own, in fact it’s likely to get worse. For the long term, behavioural therapy is recommended.

And common sense ... There are lots of little things you can do while fireworks are going off to help your pet cope: • Keep them indoors after dark • Provide them with a den in their favourite place in the house • Ignore fearful behaviour, stay calm and don’t get angry – it might sound counter-intuitive but comforting a fearful animal only confirms to them that there’s something to be afraid of. • Muffle the sound – shut the windows, doors and curtains and turn up the TV or radio. • Provide distraction – perhaps a new toy or chew.

If you need any advice on how to prepare your pet for the fireworks season and how to help them through it, book a FREE appointment with our Nurses at Cromwell Vets by calling 01480 52601

GARDENING

Transform

your lawn

The warm late summer/ early autumn temperatures make it an ideal time to sow grass seed. Whether it’s repairing thin, problem areas to completely renovating a tired and worn out lawn, now is a good time to do these jobs.

S

isters Sarah and Jo who run GreenThumb Peterborough and Oundle give their tops tips for doing this work if it didn’t get done in the spring. Jo says “how to seed bare or thin patches is one of our most common enquiries. We often see lawns where grass

seed has just been scattered on the ground and then left not watered making the chances of quick and successful germination really slim”. Here are our 5 easy steps to getting it right: ready to withstand the winter.

1. Prepare the ground With a hand tool, rake away any dead grass or moss to expose the surface of the soil. The soil surface needs to be crumbly (not compact and hard) to ensure good contact with the seed. Fill any sunken holes with soil to bring them up to one level before sowing the seed. 2. Sow the seed Lightly scatter the grass seed but resist putting a thick covering down as this is unlikely to germinate well. As a rough guide the seed should be around 5 and 10mm apart. 3. Cover with a thin layer of soil This only needs to be between 1 and 5mm, just enough to cover the seed for good germination and to help keep the birds off. 4. Keep the ground moist Water is absolutely essential to swell the seed and encourage growth. You must water regularly if the weather is dry but don’t flood or puddle the areas. Ideally, use a sprinkler on a hose and water just enough to keep the surface moist. Little and often is the best method. 5. Mow when the new grass is long enough With your mower on a high setting give the new grass a light cut when it’s about 5cm high. Avoid the new grass getting too long so a first cut when it’s about 5cm high will help the grass thicken, and get stronger, ready to withstand the winter.

One month closer to the Yaxley Festival touchdown, although May 2017 still seems a long way off! Here’s introducing a further two of the bands that will be performing. This month, in my quest to keep the different genres flowing, and for those who don’t know these busy musicians already ... I’m introducing Children Of The Revolution and The Gangsters.

Music is life.. That’s why our hearts have beats. Different styles of music, yet both bands give a particularly energetic, get up and dance, party feel to their performance. Can’t wait. And there’s plenty more to come ... watch this space!

Cosmic Katie‘ s Stars COMMUNITY NEWS

October 2016

By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer

Pisces February 20-March 20

Be aware of situations both personally and at work that are starting to break down, and plan how these can be rebuilt in a new more productive way. It’s all about planning ahead this month so start to see the bigger picture. You have the energy to do anything you want now.

Aries March 21-April 20 Take responsibility for your actions this month. That way when things go well you can feel proud and when they don’t go so well, you can learn. News of a birth or pregnancy brings great surprise. You’re at last taking into account what you want and not just pleasing others.

Taurus April 21-May21 What you think about expands thanks to the very sociable and communicative links which Mercury is now bringing to the fore. Plans you lay down this month form the beginning of the future that dreams are made of. You were aiming too low, but this month that all changes.

Gemini May 22-June 22 Don’t go back to something or someone which didn’t make you happy the first time round. You can fool others but you can’t fool yourself. Setting higher standards sees a more attractive and confident Gemini emerge. Don’t allow a bad work experience to stand in the way of exploring a new one which has success written all over it. Cancer June 23-July 23

If you’re tired or you need a break then rearrange your schedule, but don’t carry on regardless or you are going to run yourself into the ground. Foreign contacts in business bring fresh options. Don’t cancel meetings for the end of the month as someone has gone out of their way to accommodate your needs.

Leo July 24-August 23

A business associate who you didn’t think you could trust this time last month is about to pleasantly surprise you with the support and admiration they shower upon you. Family want a favour you’re not willing to give and the longer you lead them on, the more you’re going to damage your relationship when you say ‘no.’

Virgo August 24-September 23

You don’t get what you don’t think about, so try to allow your mind to open up and think. You’ve closed yourself off recently for fear of upsetting those you love, but the only person you upset was yourself. New faces help you discover a more fun and youthful side to your character which puts the laughter back in your life

Libra September 24-October 23 If you know you need to say you’re sorry, do it. Don’t act in a way which casts you in an arrogant light or you’ll lose important support - It’s time to speak some truths. It is also the time when you can tie up contractual and financial issues to your advantage.

perfect lips Unfortunately the lips age too! Lips become thinner, get vertical lines at the top and bottom, and the lines from the corners of the mouth start to give a 'puppet' look which makes us look sad by showing lines down towards the chin making the corners droop. With a little professional help, lips can be given back the fullness, naturally and painlessly, with vertical lines smoothed, marionette lines reduced and the corners uplifted to give back that lovely natural smile again.

Scorpio October 24-November 22

Why are you making decisions based on what other people would do, when you should be forging ahead in your own style? It’s what will ensure the projects you’re setting up can last. Someone wants to spend more time in your company but you don’t feel the same. Let them down gently.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21

You’re on the edge of making some really big decisions about your life, but you’re listening to advice from those who’s own lives sometimes look unattractive to you. You self image is given a boost and you decide to aim higher and maybe even do something you wouldn’t usually dare dream of by the 30th!

Capricorn December 22-January 20

You were focusing on results, which is why you weren’t getting any. Instead this month, focus on change. It’s the answer to your problems and will also boost those declining energy levels. From the 11th you find out who was lying and who was telling the truth in financial matters.

Aquarius January 21-February 19 If you’re not proud of what you’ve done, start to act as the person you’d like to become. We’re all capable of change and have the right to it. Living in the past is not acceptable. Eyes forward Aquarius. You’re about to find out how much fun life can be when you put fear to one side and take on new experiences.

FARMING

October had tremendous possibility. The summer’s oppressive heat was a distant memory, and the golden leaves promised a Sarah Guillory, Reclaimed world full of beautiful adventures. October is a celebration of summer’s abundance, and a messenger of the winter months to follow. Though her mornings are cold, the night drawing in to steal daylight at either end of the day, and the first autumnal rains quenching the parched summer soils, October’s larder is filled with seasonal pheasant and partridge, with plums and pears from the orchard, and pumpkins from the allotment (or greengrocer. Or Tesco). With the last of the raspberry, radish, and rocket as it goes out of season, I regret taking the summer days for granted, and when the first ‘proper’ storm seeks out the hole in my coat, boots, or more likely both, I regret not fixing or replacing them. We’re now on the seasonal conveyor belt of conkers, fireworks, carol services, Christmas parties, New Year hangovers, snowdrops, and snow of course. Before we know it, it’ll be 2017! But we can’t get ahead of ourselves; there’s far too much to do before then. On the farm, we need nothing more than a good rain early in the month to heighten the sense of urgency in preparing the land for

Tom Farmer

winter. Fields left unsown at the end of this month are unlikely to be tilled or drilled with seed until the spring, ahead of the deep freeze of winter, insect, fungus, disease, and pigeon are already stealing the potential of next year’s harvest, and we bring lambs born last spring on to our farm in October to graze the grass through the winter. And there’s admin. On the farm, this is a little different from domestic admin with its tax returns and parking permits; we’ll be trimming hedges, repairing fences, and checking the pipes taking water to the animal drinking troughs can’t freeze. And fixing leaking roofs, unblocking guttering, and clearing drains. Anyway, that reminds me, I must get on… I’ll see you for sparklers and toffee apples in November. Have a great October, and thanks for supporting local, British farmers. P.S. Don’t forget to look out for apples, walnuts, and mushrooms all growing wild and fruiting at this time of year. Do keep to the footpath, and as a sheep farmer I would ask, do please shut the gates, thanks!
