Don’t put yourself and others at risk – get a flu jab! Due to the changes in influenza vaccine guidance and manufacturing issues, our vaccine order this year will be split into several smaller deliveries and delivered over a much longer period of time than in previous years (between the end of September and mid-November). Please be aware that we will be inviting you to special clinics, as there are now two different vaccines to be used for adults: FLUAD vaccine - for patients aged 65+ years. Quadrivalent vaccine - for patients aged between 18 and 64. As a result of this there are some changes to our usual Saturday Flu Clinic setup, as follows:29 September

Stay warm, stay safe Throughout the year and particularly as the winter months draw in, we use our fires, burners and chimneys to warm our homes. Follow our ‘top tips’ below to ensure your home is kept safe and warm all year round. Chimneys and Fires • • • • • • • • •

Have your chimney swept once a year or more frequently if you burn wood Avoid burning resinous woods that quickly build up soot Only burn fuels suitable for your burner (eg. never burn anything other than wood in a wood burner) Do not overload the grate/ appliance Do not bank fires too high and remember to let them burn out well before you go to bed Check the hearth, floor and furnishings near the fire for hot sparks/embers Do not place objects on or over the mantelpiece which cause you to stand too close to the fire in order to reach them Use a fire/spark guard to prevent accidental fires and make sure it has the kite mark or conforms to British/ European standards Inspect your chimney breast, particularly the roof space. Make sure it is sound and sparks/fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks.

We experience an average of 81 chimney fires a year in Cambridgeshire alone. Whatever fire you have, or fuel you burn, it is vitally important you have your chimney swept to avoid a build-up of ash and soot. Wood/Multi-Fuel Burners • • • • • • • • •

A qualified and competent engineer should install all wood/multi-fuel burners and boilers – regular maintenance should be undertaken to prolong the working life of the appliance. Specialist servicing and maintenance will usually be provided by the company you purchase the appliance from but you can also refer to www.solidfuel.co.uk for advice and information Ensure correct ventilation is in place when the appliance is in use Wood burning appliances should only use the right quality wood recommended by the supplier Regularly inspect the chimney and flues Generally wood should be well-seasoned (usually wood kept dry and stored for around two years) Avoid wet or newly felled wood as this will cause tars/ creosote deposits forming in the burning appliance and chimney Using laminated chipboards will leave binding glue deposits For each slow-burning period, there should follow a quick burn to dry out unwanted tar/creosote deposits and to warm up the chimney again At the end of each burning season and at least once during the season, the entire system should be cooled and thoroughly cleaned to maintain top performance.

I have recently met with some upset and angry parents, who are finding out that their teenage children are causing problems within the village. As you know, over the last few months I have been observing and dealing with the issue of anti-social behaviour in public spaces in the village by groups of youths/young adults. Some of those issues have been littering, criminal damage, drugs taking, and the bullying of younger children. I have been engaging with them and made it clear that their behaviour is not acceptable, however my words of advice have not been listened to and the peer pressure among these young people seems greater than ever. With the school summer holidays comes the issue of child care and dealing with the boredom that often sets in at this time of year. Unfortunately, things have changed considerably since we were that age and youngsters are exposed to quite a few things that we probably weren’t, and sadly, that includes drugs. “When I was a kid my parents didn’t know where I was, but there was a respect for the law and other people.” I hear this day in and day out when talking to people/parents but those days are behind us and we have to remember that we live in a different society today. Our kids are exposed to more hazards than we wish to think about – from gangs, to cyber bullying, to drugs etc. During my work, it has become apparent that not everybody knows what their children are up to and who they are hanging around with and the potential harm their children are exposed to. So I ask the parents reading this, do you know where your kids are?, do you know where they go, with whom and what they get up to once they leave the house? We are all responsible for our children until they are 18 years old, and while there are plenty of support organisations available, if you see that your child is heading in the wrong direction, seek advice. Contact the school, talk to other parents/family, talk to the family doctor. For the young person who is suffering peer pressure from the older youths who may lead them into trouble, or just want someone to talk to about what is going on in their lives, there is also advice and counselling available at the Annabel Davis Centre on Broadway. Please help us to tackle this issue and begin by remembering to ask yourself ‘Do I know where my kids are?’

Fit a smoke alarm that carries the kite mark or British Standard Number 5446 and test your alarm weekly by pressing the test button and know the life of your battery. Always also install a CO alarm in the room where the burner is installed. Chimney Fires continue to be a common occurrence in home fires in the winter months.

Halloween was always the most anticipated time of year, behind Christmas, as a kid! All of those sweets and scary costumes were amazing! Adults, on the other hand, love Halloween for the horror films that grace our cinema screens. Horror has taken a bit of a dive bomb lately, with most large film companies preferring to milk a popular series of films (Saw, The Purge, Paranormal Activity et al anyone?) as opposed to bringing out anything original and actually offering up something that can really terrify audiences. In my honest opinion, they do not make films like they used to anymore. It is all about instant gratification and getting to the punch without that building of anticipation and suspense before the kicker. When I think back to the horror films of my youth (even though they were well before my time) I still feel the spine-tingling chill whenever I watch them. Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and Scream (this is not before my time, obviously!) are some of the most amazing films to watch on All Hallows Eve to really get the fear back into you. The suspense, anticipation, punch ... all executed to perfection! Modern ‘Hollywood horrors’ lack this in spades, which not only disappoints

true horror fans but also deprives them of that rush, that feeling of leaving a cinema in the dark, fearing for what may be lurking in the shadowy corners! Thankfully, indie movies are leading the way with this. There are some seriously sinister, sickening and downright gruesome indie films out there, that would give anything Hollywood regurgitates badly, a run for their money. A very good friend of mine, Kate Davies-Speak is a very well known horror actress and is kick ass in her roles! Her films The Barge People and Cannibal Farm will leave you feeling shell-shocked, in the way that the classic horrors and the original Saw did. Another of my friends, Charlie Bond, has similar films such as Patient Seven, Slumber and Curse of the Witching Tree. None of these films are readily available but can be brought if you look hard enough! And trust me, they are well worth your time!

If you struggle to find any of those, I have some excellent suggestions to bring the fear factor back to your All Hallows Eve: The Devils Rejects – Rob Zombie takes house-raiding down a gruesome path, with the first appearance of Sid Haig’s brilliantly portrayed Captain Spaulding, who is sickeningly murderous.

On the verge of spooky! The leaves are turning from sun-parched yellow and green to beautiful autumn red, the scorching sun has been replaced by rain and … slightly less scorchy sun, and we have forgotten the sweaty and sticky clinginess of summer t-shirts for the warm embrace of winter jackets and coats. Its finally here, summer has gone and autumn is upon us. Traditionally I would now write about Halloween, and the golden week of the year for a horror film enthusiast such as myself. I would write about how kids love dressing up for trick or treating, the sugar coma that follows, or even some epic tricks to pull on unsuspecting visitors. I could even write about that period a few years ago where people were dressing up as clowns and lurking around parks at night (remember how weird that was?). I’m not going to though. Instead I’m going to tell you about the Norman Cross phantom, said to be the spirit of a man who wandered into the wooded area next to London Road and got lost. There have been reported sightings of him dating all the way back over the past forty years. Late on moonless nights, there have been reports of a tall, broad shouldered man standing on the verges of the road staring into the trees, and those few who have stopped to see if he needed help have found no trace of anyone being there. Those who were bolder still and ventured into the woods to see if he’d wandered

in reported that they’d ran back to their cars with the frightening feeling of many eyes watching them. In the early 2000s a cyclist was riding home along London Road in the early hours of the morning and reported seeing a tall man standing on the side of the road. Unlike all other reports, she was particularly frightened as this was the only reported case of the phantom not staring into the woods, but instead watching her intently as she rode past. He didn’t pursue her, but as a car drove the other way down the road she looked back over her shoulder to see he had stepped out to the edge of the road and was watching her ride away. Attempts to track down the driver were made and were eventually successful, but whilst he remembered seeing a cyclist looking distressed and pedaling faster, he saw no one else standing by the side of the road. Sightings are often reported around Halloween, so if you find yourself driving late at night along London Road – keep one eye on the verge!

Scream – ‘Ghostface’ gives a new meaning to the word scream in Wes Craven’s brilliantly original suspense horror. Hellraiser – Clive Barker gives us the ultimate sadist in Pinhead, a being hellbent on bringing the pain in unimaginable ways! Pet Sematary – Stephen King’s horror book comes to life with disturbing consequences. Candyman – Tony Todd dares you to say his name three times in the mirror, his hook waiting to meet you! Change can be a new adventure

Welcoming the autumn changes

It’s starting to feel like autumn is approaching. Change is definitely upon us at St. Peter’s as It is a fun and friendly guide designed to help them make that transition. We hope that this has helped them in some way and pray that they are settling into their new schools and are enjoying learning new things. Most of us find change a little unsettling or maybe even frightening, especially if it is sudden or life-changing. I recently met Bob Champion MBE and felt privileged to have a conversation with him. Bob was a famous jockey in the 70s and 80s. Even if you were not interested in horse racing, at that time you would have read that in 1979 he was diagnosed with cancer and given six months to live. But despite this diagnosis in 1981, he won the Grand National on Aldaniti. He finally retired from racing in 1983 having won 500 races in his career! He is now a motivational speaker at numerous events. This year he is a cast member in BBC 1’s The Real Marigold Hotel. He is a charming, charismatic gentleman, as I discovered first-hand. With this change in the season before winter approaches why not come and join us and maybe make new friends? Next Coffee morning - 13 October, 10 am. (Held on 2nd Saturday each month) This is a nice social time to meet new friends or catch up with old friends. People come from Farcet and Stilton as well as Yaxley to enjoy homemade cakes, warming drinks and a chat. Sunday Services - 10.30am. Everyone is welcome to join us. we enter a period of time without a vicar; an interregnum. Change is so often deemed as negative and scary; however, the Bible tells us change is good. We, at St. Peter’s, are embracing this and believe God has a plan for us and we need to allow change to grow us as a church. The process is already underway to find a replacement for Jon; however, this will take time to ensure we find the right fit for our church. During this time, we’d like to reassure everyone that things will resume as normally as possible. Sunday services will be led by visiting clergy or members of the church and the majority of services will go ahead as scheduled, with the exception of 9am services on 30 September, 21 October, 4 & 11 November and 2 & 16 December. On the majority of these dates there will be a 9am service at St. Giles in Holme, please check the notice sheet for details. Birthday Celebrations, Walks and Hauntings! We were blessed with a lovely sunny day on 1 September as we celebrated our 100th birthday with tea and cakes at the Queens Pavilion, Yaxley. It was great to see so many members old and new and, of course, members of the public, and to reminisce over old times. The members worked very hard baking cakes, doing flower decorations and the washing up and clearing away but it was all very worthwhile. On 8 September, 5 members took part in a walk in Ramsey, splitting into two groups for either two or 6 miles. The walk leader was very informative about the history of Ramsey and despite a bit of light rain, we all enjoyed it. When we arrived back we were served a very nice ploughman’s lunch followed by a choice of delicious cakes. Our next meeting will be held on 11 October as usual at the Lancaster Club, Main Street, Yaxley when speaker Mark Egerton will be talking about his book, ‘The Haunted History of Huntingdonshire’. The book is not just about hauntings, it also contains many pictures and facts about Huntingdonshire. Mark can also be found on Facebook. A ‘space age’ radio play With the evenings now turning autumnal, we enjoyed a play at our September meeting in the style of the radio plays. The Court Players entertained us with a radio play set in the year 2120 on board a spaceship with 30 minutes left before it takes off for the planet Mars. The crew of three, which unintentionally included the cleaner, end up being launched into space with the cleaner worrying about what her husband will have for tea. An entertaining evening and something a little different to explore. We are now busy preparing for the 1940s weekend, where we will be having our usual stall selling cakes, bakes and goods, so please come along and see us. If anyone is interested in joining, just come along and see what we are about. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. Whilst I don’t think I could muster the enthusiasm for October that Rainbow Rowell has in the book ‘Attachments’, it is an exciting month; a month of transition. The leaves are changing colour on the trees, we’ll be sowing our autumn-sown barley and wheat crops, and the sheep that were shorn (or is it sheared?) in June look decidedly more ‘sheepy’ and less naked. But October, too, in some years stakes a claim to be the new September. She sometimes brings glorious days of blue skies and once the morning chill that nips reminding us of the coming winter has receded, warmth that reminds us of summer.

Oh summer. Anyway, to avoid fulfilling the stereotype of a farmer who talks about nothing but the weather, I’ll move on. But as a point of note, please Lord, we’d like warm, moist soils, and half an inch of gentle rain just as we put the seed drill away in the barn. Right, no more weather. “Hey, October, can I pick sloes yet to make sloe gin?” “NO! (well, not unless we’ve had a good frost). Try in November.” “Sorry I asked.” You can pick apples, figs, medlar, and pears in

October though, and any remaining blackberries and elderberries. If, like me, you try to celebrate the culinary seasons, you’ll be pleased that walnuts, hazelnuts, quince (yum!), swede, and parsnips are coming back into season, as are pheasant and partridge, and in fact what a dream of a meal it would be to include all of these. That’s set me thinking. So this month, stick candy bars in your pockets, dig out the corduroy, revisit your soup recipes, and have a glorious October! Thanks for supporting British farmers, fishermen, and food producers – we’ll need it in the coming months of Brexit.

Spiders in your house? Relax, they’re just looking for love … This is the time of year when spider stories start to dominate the news and everyone asks where they have all come from. Crops and hay are traditionally cut in the autumn, displacing rural spiders and some of these spiders may end up in our homes. But the real reason that

so many are visible indoors at the moment is mainly because this is the season for spider mating. Most of the spiders that appear in our houses have been there all along, unobtrusively killing flies and similar behind our backs, but now they are in the mood for love. A male spider has to woo a female with a courtship display that often incudes dancing and the provision of a tasty wrapped morsel. Failure to adequately display these intentions is likely to lead to the male ending up on the female spider’s menu for dinner which, despite the fancy footwork, is often still the case post-mating. There is a lot of fear and mythology surrounding spiders yet on the whole they

are quite harmless in the UK. Spiders are not aggressive towards humans and would only attempt to bite if feeling threatened. Only the fur species have a bite strong enough to puncture human skin, of which just one, the noble false widow, is also venomous. Even their bite, however, should be no more painful than a wasp sting. The key thing to remember should you be bitten is to keep it clean and avoid scratching as this can lead to a bacterial infection. So, put away the rolled-up newspaper and play some Barry White for our amazing arachnids instead!

Team and individual performances With the summer outdoor season coming to an end, there is lots to report, on both team and individual performances. In the league, the highlights were in the Weekend League, with our Sharks Team, captained by Ray Bass, winning promotion to the Premier division and our Seals team, captained by Tony Belson finishing as runners-up in the Premier division, to Blackstones, a very strong Stamford team. The best result for a Yaxley team for many years. Our Hurricanes Team had mixed fortune, finishing bottom of Division Two, but in contrast to their league form, they had an astonishing cup run, winning the Mick Lewin trophy, in a very exciting game against Market Deeping. The game was won 62-61 with the very last bowl sealing the victory. For the first time in three years we also won the Oundle Cup. The final league positions for the season are: Midweek league Yaxley Kites finished 8th in the Premier division and look like being demoted to Division One. Yaxley Falcon finished 2nd in Division One and will be promoted to the Premier Division. Yaxley Eagles finished 6th in Division 4. Weekend League Yaxley Sharks finished 2nd in the Premier Division. Yaxley Seals won Division One and will be promoted to the Premier Division.

Over 60s League Yaxley Spitfires (with one game left) finished mid-table in the Premier Division. Yaxley Hurricanes (with one game still left), look like finishing bottom of Division Two and will be demoted.

With a cheer from the gathered support Marlene Osborne won the Ashton Cup, after being runner-up in the previous two years. Club Finals Day Our inter-club finals day was held on the weekend of 8/9 September, with the green still bowling well, keen competition and good support. All had an enjoyable afternoon, of particular note and with a cheer from the gathered support Marlene Osborne won the Ashton Cup, after being runner-up in the previous two years. In probably the longest game of the afternoon, the Drawn Pairs couldn’t be separated after 21 ends went to the ‘penalty shoot out’ of an extra end, Ann Cooper and Fred Browning just beating the pairing of Tony Belson and Michael Ratcliffe. The Ladies’ and Men’s 4-Wood Competition was won by husband and wife Julie and Andrew Cooper respectively. They will now represent the club in 2019 in the inter-club ‘Champion of Champions’ competition.

An area the club are keen to progress is the development of youth players in the village who one day, may go onto the play for the first team and possibly beyond. With this in mind, the club now has youth teams from u7’s right through to u16’s. The PJAL league kicked off on Saturday 8th September and all teams got off to a great start to the season, long may this continue. We have some teams that can still accommodate squad players, so if you have a child interested in joining, please get in touch with Aaron Coulson, Youth Development Officer on arron.coulson@yaxleyjfc.co.uk We are also running Under 6’s training sessions which are all about having fun. This session is held at In2itive Park on Sunday 9-10am. The facts about MTD by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

As reported a year ago, Making Tax Digital (MTD) is being introduced for all tax payers and many self employed taxpayers and property landlords are still unaware of HM Revenue and Customs’ radical plans to transform the tax online filing system.

The Facts The way that you report your business profits to HMRC is changing. From April 2017 the cash reporting rules change for the self employed and for property landlords. l From April 2019 VAT registered traders, whose taxable supplies exceed the VAT registration threshold (currently £85,000) at some point on or after 1 April 2019, will have to report to HMRC under a new Making Tax Digital reporting sequence. l From April 2020, the self assessment tax return is being replaced by five new reporting obligations made during and after the tax year, but more on this at a later date when further details are replaced. l Your first tax return under the new system is due in the fourth month of your accounting period, you will then have to file with HMRC every three months. l If you are not already using software for your record keeping/accounting, you will need to learn how to use a spreadsheet, or some type of accounting software or App. l You will need a reliable internet connection and a facility to store your electronic data. l l

MTD for VAT l If you are a VAT registered business with taxable supplies (non-exempt turnover), which exceeds the VAT registration threshold you will be mandated into MTD for VAT from 1 April 2019. l You will have to keep digital records and file returns under MTD for the first VAT return commencing after 1 April 2019. l If you are not VAT registered but your taxable supplies exceed the VAT registration threshold on or after 1 April 2019, you will be mandated into MTD for VAT from your VAT registration date. l If you are VAT registered but your taxable supplies do not exceed VAT registration threshold at 1 April 2019, you are exempt from MTD for VAT until the first day of the month following the end of the first 12 month period ending after 1 April 2019 where your taxable supplies do exceed the threshold. For example, if the first time you cross the VAT threshold is the 12 months ending 30 November 2019, you are mandated into MTD for VAT from 1 December 2019, even if you have been VAT registered for many years. l Once in MTD for VAT, you remain in MTD for VAT unless you deregister for VAT. l Under MTD for VAT, you complete the same number of VAT returns as currently (4 for quarterly, 12 for monthly, 1 for Annual Accounting). The due dates remain the same.

Looking ahead We are all very excited for the year ahead and here the teachers share their topics for this half term. Newton Adults are very happy to be welcoming back Year One children at the beginning of term. As I write, we are looking forward to our new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) children starting. Our topic this half-term is ‘What happens when I fall asleep?’ and we would be very grateful for any donations of torches, bedding and nightwear to support our learning. We are hoping that the good weather continues so that we can extend our learning outside. In Edison Class, it’s a sailor’s life for Years One and Two as we get ready to navigate, investigate and explore the world, just like Captain Cook. Over the term, we will write an adventure narrative based on the story of The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson, we will look at infamous pirates as well as explorers who discovered parts of the world, we will focus on learning about Britain and its seas and learn sea shanties! Brunel Class’ first topic is called ‘Traders and Raiders’. Years three and four pupils are going to be looking at the Vikings; who they are, where they came from and what they did once they arrived in Britain. Over the term, we will be creating our own Viking shields and acting out some of the battles the Vikings fought in. Also, we will be exploring some Viking sagas with the aim of writing our own by October half-term. Stephenson Class are settling in very quickly to the new school year. Our topic this term is ‘Allotments’. Year 5 and 6 will be learning about where different types of food are grown in the UK, as well as plotting where food comes from on a world map. In our science lessons, we are going to be studying plant and animal life-cycles and will be conducting our own experiments. We are also looking forward to a trip to Ely Cathedral later in October. The power of community My journey began when I became interested our youth groups and realised that they were being stigmatised and blamed for everything. I believed that this issue required support and understanding. By Paul Underwood To change anything you have to be part of it, not the problem but the solution, so I made it my mission to become friends with groups of young people in the recreation ground. It was difficult at first as they are a tight knit group who look out for each other and indeed our younger ones. They are basically

a family with their individual personal issues and feelings just like a family would have. The young people told me that they wanted a memorial in honour of their friends and all those young who sadly left them; a memorial positioned in the recreation ground adjacent to the shelter in a new

position, so I wanted to assist. I listened and four of the lads then attended a full council meeting with me. We put a case forward and everyone was impressed that these lads attended. From here the young people fund raised for their memorial and it was finally unveiled at the Great Get Together on the 23 June 2018. I would firstly and most importantly like to thank the young people and their families for making this happen. I would also like to thank those who offered their support, both professionally and financially including Michelle Lay, David Sanders, Stewart Howe, Mark Oliver, Nath Murdoch and Rodney Butcher. The memorial is not just a wonderful memorial to those sadly missed, but also a testament to the power of community.

The nights may be getting longer but there’s still plenty going on at your local library. We have some fantastic events from The Library Presents and Arts Alive for you this Autumn; Sunday 14 October - Comedy 4 Kids Join James Campbell with his stand-up show for anyone who likes comedy without the rude words. Making fun of everything from coucous to penguins to Nintendo Wii, James Campbell’s unique blend of storytelling and anecdotes will have your whole family in stiches! Firework Display As in previous years, and with the kind permission of the landlord, the display is held on the Three Horseshoes pub field, Main St, Yaxley, PE7 3LD. The gates open at 6pm with the fireworks launched at 7pm. There is also a large bonfire that will be lit at approximately 6:15pm (conditions permitting). Traditional bonfire party food at sensible prices, hot drinks, a licenced bar will be available, plus other attractions. The display has once again been upgraded and will include more fireworks with much anticipation surrounding a very special grand finale. As always, this promises to be a fantastic evening, with a professionally fired display by our friends at 1805 Fireworks ltd. The display offers fantastic value for money with a family ticket costing only £12.00, and all single tickets £4.00. Less fear of fireworks for four-legged friends Fireworks night can be terrifying for many dogs but teaching dogs to cope with noise fears in advance can help lessen the stress they experience when they hear the unexpected whizz, pop and bang of fireworks. To avoid the fear and anguish many dogs will go through during fireworks displays, it’s important that owners plan ahead to help them and their dogs feel prepared and comfortable when the time surrounding 5 November arrives. Gradually teaching your dog that noises are not scary will help them be able to cope with unexpected bangs and pops over time. This usually involves playing recorded versions of the scary noises

but starting at such a low volume that your dog is not worried by them. The volume and direction of sounds are changed over time, but so slowly that your dog does not show any signs of fear. The sounds should also be associated with something that they enjoy, such as their favourite treats or a game. Dogs who are very frightened already may require support from a qualified, experienced behaviourist.
