Welcome to the September issue of the Yaxley Gazette. I hope you are all enjoying the summer so far, I am enjoying the sunshine but not the intense heat as it means I have to get up extra early to get my dogs out before it gets too hot, but I am not moaning, I would just like that extra hour’s sleep! Holme WI
Yaxley WI In August, instead of our normal meeting, we visited Holmewood Hall for a delicious cream tea. It was a lovely change not to do the cooking ourselves and to leave the washing-up behind! The weather was beautiful so we were able to enjoy a stroll in the beautiful grounds after tea. Our September meeting ‘Social Evening & Autumn Auction’ will be held on the 8th of the month back at the Lancaster Club at 7.30pm.
Yaxley Car Boot The August car boot was a great success, so if you have anything to sell, get yourself a pitch. Just turn up on the Saturday morning, 3 September, at The Three Horseshoes. It’s £5 per pitch, set up from 7am, open from 7am to 11am. Entrance by donation to the Scouts and Guides.

Our speaker for this month was unable to make the meeting, but at short notice Pat Wallace-Hope stepped in to come and tell us about her profession; she is one of only a few people in the UK who are authentic kilt makers. A very interesting talk. It was with great sadness that one of our members, Andrea Barker, a very respected and former president of our Wi passed away, she had a great sense of humour and always went out of her way to welcome new members. Andrea he will be very much missed. Our meeting next month will be on Thursday 1 September when our speaker will be Sam Davis who will be telling us all about her work for the ‘Little People’ charity. Come along and join us at Holme village hall at 7.30pm.

Bowls Club With the season drawing to end, we start to approach the most important games. Which teams will make that push for promotion and which could face the dreaded demotion?
A
s we currently stand in weekend league, Div.1 the Yaxley ‘Sharks’ head the table and look good for promotion back to the premiership, but in the same division, the 'Seals' are propping up the rest of the league, both teams need points for different reasons. In the midweek league, the 'Kites' in the premiership need to pull up their socks to avoid dropping in to a relegation battle, but in Div.1 the Falcons, with a few good results could be in the mix for promotion. The Over 60s midweek league sees both our teams at the top of Div.1, the 'Spitfires' seem to be running away with the league and look good for promotion to the Premiership and with a few good results the 'Hurricanes' could join them. Congratulations to our club secretary, Kathy Browning on winning the Cook cup, with runner up Les Robinett. Yaxley have had a very good cup run in many of the team

Yaxley are in the final of the Munday Shield later this month, so lets hope we go one better and secure a win. All internal club completions are well underway and we now are looking forward to an enjoyable but competitive club finals day mid September.

BLOG
t was when walking home from the shops one morning that I happened to arrive back to my house at the same time as the recycling bins were being emptied in my street. Well, I say bins emptied; mine was. But only half the bins in the streets got emptied. The other half had the little tag of shame attached to them saying that no – you couldn’t cope with the rules attached to owning a bin. I can’t help but feel like this is the most tedious type of bureaucracy and it just shouldn’t be necessary. First and foremost if you put rubbish in with the recycling, you’re an idiot. You’re an idiot who deserves to have to sit and filter through week old potato peelings and plastic bottles, and separate them. Frankly, the bin men should be well within their rights to throw your manky refuse over your fence into your garden for you to do deal
with, but fortunately society deems this to be unacceptable. Similarly, if your regular waste bin is overflowing, you should have to take it to the tip. Fair’s fair, if you’ve gutted your house and thrown its entire contents out, you need to deal with it ... you just leave it for someone else to get rid of for you. The same, however, cannot be said of recycling. When you see bins being rejected because they’re overfilled by an inch, you really have to despair at the tediousness of it. No wonder the councils are missing their recycling targets – just use some common sense! Let’s be honest – if you reject my recycling because there’s too much of it, what do you really think I’m going to do with it? It’s going in the normal bin, and heading to the landfill. Let’s just all try to work together and do our bit, and not waste our efforts binding ourselves to the letter of the rules.

Shopping centre car parking update This is the official statement from the Managing agents. Please take the time to read it all, and bear in mind that the shop owners are not responsible. The Managing Agents for the Broadway Shopping Centre are anxious to ensure the fair and proper working of the parking control measures. To this end we are liaising closely with the parking operatives, Gemini Parking Solutions London Ltd, in order to sort out initial teething problems. Gemini are currently investigating each of the Parking Control Notices (PCNs) issued in order to check their validity and we have their assurance that any found to be issued in error will be cancelled. Please be aware that these parking control measures have been introduced reluctantly because of the need to free up car park spaces for genuine shoppers to the centre who, at times, previously found it impossible to park. Neither the owner of the shopping centre nor the shop owners receive any of the parking charges collected but these measures are for the benefit of the shop owners who were finding their trade affected by customers unable to park. The shop owners are not responsible for these initial hiccups so please bear with us and do not avoid shopping at the Broadway Shopping Centre. If you abide by the rules (maximum duration 90 minutes with no return within one hour of leaving) you will be fine. If your visit requires a longer duration, (eg. hair appointment or café visit), then inform the shop owner and give them your vehicle registration so that extra time can be given for that day. If you are issued with a PCN and you think that it is incorrect, please email Gemini at appeals@geminiparkingsolutions.com

LEGAL ADVICE
Pensions and Divorce – the Facts We read and hear about celebrity divorces all of the time. The press is full of articles about who got the ‘City Apartment’ or ‘Villa in Marbella’, but what about the less glamorous, but often more valuable asset – The Pension? When couples divorce, the Court must consider all of the assets, including the available pension provision. In many cases, other than the home, the biggest asset is a pension, especially if one party has worked in the public sector or has a final salary scheme pension. Quite often, one party has a greater pension provision than the other, particularly if one partner has spent time out of the workplace looking after the children. The Court has three main options in dealing with pensions upon divorce: • Offsetting – the pension owner keeps their pension and the other retains another asset i.e. house or savings • Attachment orders – the pension remains in the name of the owner but the other “flags” a share of the pension to become payable to them when the pension owner retires
• Pensions sharing orders – pension is split (not always equally) and some of the pension is transferred from that party’s pension to the other party’s pension – they are then in control of how to invest and manage the pension and when to draw the pension. This is the most usual way to split pensions on divorce Pensions are difficult issues to deal with as they are not easy to value. Anyone thinking of divorce or separation should give consideration to all financial issues including pensions but regardless of the issues it is always advisable to obtain some legal advice. Abby Smith of Woolley & Co Solicitors always approaches matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting couples to reach a swift, amicable agreement, specific to their needs.

Conington Autumn 2016 The Church Times have just e-mailed me with details of next year’s diaries and I am only half way through this year’s! How about you? I do hope that you have already included the 2nd ‘Big Event’ of the year at Conington Church. What? You have not heard about it? Just south of Norman’s Cross and to the East of the A1M lies the village of Conington. It has a beautiful church dedicated to All Saints which was ‘closed’ in 1976. The building is now in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust who permit two services to be held per year. These are 1662 Traditional Sung Evensong and the next one is on 25 September at 3 pm. The 6 bells are rung to welcome the congregation and the service is accompanied by a robed choir. If you have never been in Conington church or just miss the old ways of worship, you are invited to join us for the next service. We hope to see you there. Our biggest recruitment challenge to date...
F
ostering has changed dramatically in recent years, making it harder than ever before for local authorities to recruit good foster carers. Peterborough City Council explain why they are having to ask for more than ever before from prospective new foster carers, and how to get in touch if you can help. We’ve had great success over the past few years recruiting more than 80 new fostering households - however this, combined with several other factors have resulted in some significant changes in local fostering. So what does that mean for a prospective foster carer in Peterborough? “You’ve recruited 80 new foster carers, how can you still need more?” we hear you ask… Government led adoption reforms and newer initiatives such as “Fostering to Adopt” have
seen greater numbers of younger children securing permanency at an earlier stage, meaning less are placed in temporary foster care – an excellent result, but one which means we’ve seen a drop in the need for foster carers able to care for babies and toddlers and with many foster carers already approved for these groups, demand currently outweighs supply. Today, more than 60% of the children in our care are aged 10 and above and it’s in this area we intend to focus our recruitment efforts for the next 12 months. So what do you need to know? Whilst the welfare of young people is our top priority, ensuring the wellbeing of our carers is equally important and we will always look to avoid making placements which would compromise your existing family dynamic. Caring for older children, whilst undoubtedly more
rewarding carries a greater risk making it difficult for us to place teenagers with fostering families who already have younger children at home – for this reason, we are looking for carers whose children have already grown up, moved out or are leaving for university later this year. As a foster carer, you’re so much more than just a bed for the night, you’re an advocate for young people and will need to attend various meetings, to contribute to the development of their care plan, or to review their progress with your supervising social worker. It’s important you are available to attend these meetings, which isn’t always possible when working full time. That’s why applicants will need to demonstrate their availability, so if you’re working part time, semiretired, or have the security to put your skills and experience to good
use without reliance on fostering to provide a regular income, then we’d love to talk to you. Finally, you must have a spare bedroom. It might sound obvious, but young people in care are already in a period of significant change, a personal space to call their own is essential to give some stability during an otherwise confusing time. We’re realistic about the challenge we face, and we know that many of the people who might make the best carers will have other commitments which prevent them from doing so right now, but if just one percent of Peterborough residents could nominate one potential carer who ticked the boxes above, that could mean dozens of new foster carers, better futures for children, and more money for the local authority to invest back into the services families need most.
If you’d like more information on becoming a foster carer for Peterborough City Council, you can request an information pack by calling 01733 317427 or visiting our website www.peterboroughfostering.co.uk

WILDLIFE
Help the Wildlife Trust preserve
summer meadows A walk through a wildflower meadow at the height of summer is one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences - from the song of the skylark overhead, the swish of long grasses swaying in the breeze to watching bees and butterflies flying over fields, the scent of wildflowers in the air, these treasured moments can be magical.
H
owever, since the 1930s over 97% of wildflower meadows have been lost, with species-rich grassland covering only 1% of the UK’s land area, small fragments of vulnerable habitat are under threat from development and poor management. In Cambridgeshire, a dozen of the very best meadows and species rich grassland are protected by the Wildlife Trust BCN, places such as Upwood Meadows, 10 miles south of Yaxley. Upwood is awash with life - in Bentley meadow medieval ridge and furrow and ant
hills provide differing micro habitats for plants and invertebrates; plants including cowslip, green-winged orchid and dyer's greenweed provide summer long colour and nectar sources for bees and butterflies. Seed collections are made to preserve these ancient wildflower species - cowslip, ox-eye daisy, bird’s foot-trefoil, Saw-wort, meadow sweet, dropwort, meadow vetchling, black knapweed, betony, pepper saxifrage, yellow rattle, self-heal, goats beard, Great burnet, green-winged
orchid, quaking grass, red, white and sulphur clover and many more. CHURCH
St Peter’s Church I am writing this a few hours after two very contrasting events at the Rio Olympics. Adam Peaty has just won Britain’s first gold of the Olympics in a new world record time and by doing so became the first British man for 28 years to win an Olympic swimming gold. At around the same time World No 1 Novak Djokovic lost in the first round of the tennis and left the court in tears. Their contrasting emotions reminded me of the line from Rudyard Kipling’s poem If which is inscribed above the entrance to Centre Court at Wimbledon. It reads: “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster, and treat those two impostors just the same....”. That might be a great quote from a wonderful poem, but it’s surely incredibly difficult to treat a first round defeat and an Olympic gold as “just the same”. At the start of a new academic year some of you will be changing schools, moving on to higher education and starting new jobs. Doubtless too some of you reading this will be struggling to find work or going through other difficulties. How can we treat starting a new school / job or failing to find a job as “just the same”?
I don’t underestimate how hard this is (and I don’t know how Kipling expected his readers to do this). However, for me, my Christian belief is definitely the answer. Whatever might happen in my life I know that Jesus Christ has won the ultimate victory – death itself and all the powers of darkness have been defeated. This knowledge enables me to begin to treat triumph and disaster as impostors and to treat them just the same. Whether you are currently enjoying triumph or struggling with disaster you are welcome to join us at St Peter’s or your local church. If you would like us to pray for you about anything at all please let me know or complete one of the cards available in St Peter’s which is open every weekday from 10.30am to 12.30pm until the end of this month. Also, if you would like details of our services or any of the other activities in and around the church then please contact me or visit our website.

Yaxley Methodist Chapel I wonder if you have noticed that The Olympics is currently being held in Brazil? With the merchandise in the shops, the television, radio and news broadcasts it is difficult to not know. The spectacular views of Copacabana beach and the surrounding views of Rio de Janeiro are overlooked by the 98 foot tall magnificent Christ The Redeemer statue on the top of Mount Corcovado. At night it is lit by floodlights. This is a symbol of Christianity across the world. A symbol of Peace! The Statue was designed by a Brazilian; sculptured by a PolishFrenchman and the face sculptured by a Romanian. They were working together! And at the time of writing this, the Olympics have not been blighted by acts of violence or hatred. The Spectators are vociferous, supportive, encouraging the athletes (and having a great time). The Volunteers are enjoying meeting, greeting and helping the spectators. The sportsmen and women are self disciplined, they have trained hard and as well as striving to win an event or medal they are entertaining the spectators. They are working together! We may not be involved in the Olympics as sportsmen or women
or as those involved in encouraging or those volunteering help. But we can work together. We can help each other, we can encourage others and we can volunteer to help those in need. Last year the Peterborough Night Shelter rotated between 7 churches each offering accommodation for 1 night per week. They opened their doors overnight to people who live on the streets and suffer particularly during the freezing winter nights. An evening meal, a bed and breakfast were offered along with fellowship, someone to chat with and advice about help available. Transport was available to assist people in getting to the venues. This year the Peterborough Night Shelter will be running from the 12th December until the 12th March. Training will be offered to volunteers. I understand that this year there will be 2 churches taking part on this side of Peterborough. If you are interested in helping, more information is available on the website lpp.churchinsight.com

HISTORY
“Glatton Round Hill, Yaxley Stone Mill and Whittlesea Mere, Are the three great wonders – of Huntingdonshire.”
by Stewart Howe
Part I
The three wonders of Huntingdonshire
S
o reads the archaic Huntingdonshire rhyme, oft misquoted since its inclusion in Fenland Notes and Queries, the quarterly antiquarian journal. Sadly, the three great wonders no longer exist, at least not in their original form. The belvedere and deer park at the arrow-shaped Round Hill are no more, the stone mill has been demolished and Southern England’s greatest expanse of water was drained in the middle of the nineteenth century. Whilst their importance has faded, the significance of this triangular arrangement of places did not escape the attention of English landscape painter Peter de Wint (1784-1849), whose canvases offer a tantalising glimpse into a time when our region was truly wondrous. The Yaxley Stone Mill, later called the Black Mill, due to its later plastered and tarred appearance was said to have existed in various forms since the 16th Century. According to a 1927 article in the Peterborough Advertiser, the dates 1500, 1677 and 1742 were visible on the structure.
Referencing its significance as a local landmark, it seems to take precedence even over St Peter’s church on a couple of early maps. This is probably due to its function as not merely an agricultural building, but as a “lighthouse of the Fens”. Standing on the proud glacial deposits of the undulating Fen edge, the mill had a commanding view of the boggy lands below and most importantly the Whittlesea Mere. This great lake, very much the economic engine of the region at least since Anglo-Saxon times, was so important that its shoreline dictated the boundaries of both old Huntingdonshire and local parishes who shared its fish, reed and fowl. The mill itself offered a clear view of Ely Minster on a clear day. The structure therefore served as visual point of reference for lighter barges crossing the Whittlesea Mere. The waters, though shallow, were treacherous with more the one historical report of squalls upsetting vessels. A local legend recounts how the sons of King Canute were
drowned during a “violent storm and whirlwind” while travelling from Peterborough to Ramsey. The abbey stones at Engine Farm on the Great Fen may have found their way to the lake bed in similar circumstances. Those caught in a fierce Fen Blow need not exercise too much imagination to conjure a picture of water farers in trouble on the fen. Yaxley Stone Mill was demolished in 1935, in a time when conservation and heritage very much played second fiddle to industry and commerce. The aforementioned article describes the process – “With the upper storeys to the level of the white cross in our picture, and surrounded by the debris of ancient stones and hand·made bricks from the four-foot thick walls, the romantic structure presents a derelict with the worn-out millstones, the massive appearance at the moment. But all this, 16ft. cast-iron spindle on which the sails revolved, the robust oaken rafters of the floors and the rotting cone of the roof, scattered higgledy-piggledy
round the base will be cleared away and stacked and the inside cleaned out to enable the foundations to be investigated”. Tales of an eighteen-foot deep dungeon beneath the mill containing buried gold (rumoured to be a medieval prison) and a tunnel network connecting the structure to St Peter’s church and the manorial Burysted are mysteries that remain unsolved. A hand-written note in the Norris Museum in St Ives by a Reverend Vigers details an unsuccessful attempt to locate the tunnels; it seems that a local had directed the gentleman to the incorrect location – the Tower Mill on the Broad Way! What is true however is that when it was demolished, large blocks of Barnack stone were discovered beneath its foundations and a millstone at Manor Farm might possibly be a relic from the mill’s illustrious past. A mysterious standing stone, hidden in undergrowth close to its location might also be a component of a structure that was far more than the sum of its parts.

Mobile Phone Tax Relief for Limited Companies HMRC allow limited companies to provide a director / employee with one mobile phone which can be used in both a business and personal capacity without causing benefit in kind tax issues. However, in order to be able to claim the cost, the phone contract has to be in the name of the limited company, as opposed to a personal contract. You cannot simply pay the monthly phone bill from the companies bank account, the contract itself needs to be between the limited company and the phone provider. It is possible to speak to your mobile phone provider to ask them to officially transfer the contract to the company. If you are going to do this you need to be careful that they don’t put you on a more expensive plan.
Yaxley Flower Club The Club’s July meeting was Wendy Goodliff''s demonstration ‘A Stitch in Time’. The remaining meetings are:
Patchwork Quilting Club However, if you are on a low price monthly plan and do not wish to change your contract, what you could do instead is simply have your limited company purchase a new mobile phone handset directly. This would be allowable as a business expense, meaning 20% corporation tax would be saved on the cost of the handset. Depending on whether the company is VAT registered and what VAT scheme they are on, they may also be able to claim the VAT back on the handset. Please be aware that when it comes to claiming mobile phone expenses, the handset will be an asset of the company, so if it is sold any proceeds will be taxable income for corporation tax purposes (and if VAT registered, VAT will be charged on the sale).

Time to get prepared for the big boiler switch on – winter’s on the way
by Eileen Le Voi
September – late summer or early autumn?
W
hatever your take on it – it’s the perfect month to get your boiler checked and serviced before winter kicks in. The days might be warm, but the nights are already turning a bit chilly. With most people ‘hanging out’ until October to turn on their boilers after the summer months, it is essential that you use the next few weeks to ensure your boiler gets the professional once over. Your boiler has been working throughout the year giving you all the hot water you require, and as we are about to enter the autumn and winter months when your boiler will also be providing your home with heat and taking on an additional workload – it’s time to get in touch
gas/oil, boiler and central heating plumbers and engineers all over the PE area. So, for peace of mind and to avoid the misery of a boiler breakdown this winter, what should you do to prepare your central heating for the cold weather? Annual boiler services The weeks leading up to winter are the best times for boiler services and safety checks; months of disuse can create problems in gas appliances, and these problems can lead to central heating system failures when the appliance begins operating in winter. The best way to nip boiler faults in the bud is to arrange a boiler service. If you can get your boiler serviced before the winter strikes, you can identify and resolve any problems swiftly. The last thing you want is to have no central heating or hot water on a freezing winter morning! Visit www.safelocaltrades.com to find a recommended engineer in your area. Insulate your pipes

When the weather drops below zero, standing water in your pipes can freeze, which can block up your plumbing system. As water expands
when it turns into ice, frozen pipes are also particularly likely to rupture and break. Pipe insulation is a simple, cost-effective solution to this problem. Check your radiators The approach of winter is also a good time to bleed radiators. This will ensure that your central heating operates efficiently – if there is air trapped in the radiator, then it will not warm up as well as it would if it was full of water, and might not even properly warm up at all. Test it in the autumn British households typically switch their central heating on in October. You may not realise that a fault has developed in your boiler until you turn it on just before winter, and by this point, all the reputable plumbers may be extremely busy. SPORT
GOOD SPORT Yaxley FC Yaxley FC go into another season of step 5 football with high expectation around the whole club. Step 5 is the United Counties Premier League and their path into league football would be as follows. UCL Premier (1st or 2nd place promoted) >> Southern League South and East (1st place or play off winners promoted) >> National League South (1st place or play off winners promoted) >> National League (1st place or play off winners promoted) >> League 2 and so on… For a village the size of Yaxley and with the level of support and available players, we are already punching about our weight, but the club still believes it is capable of operating at a higher level. With your help we can get there. You may have seen some articles this summer in the press about the search for further investment in Yaxley FC and that remains an ongoing process. That funding is to continue promoting the village nationally via the FA Cup and FA Vase whilst working on a pathway to develop younger talent in locally. To this end we have seen expansion in the Ladies teams at the club and a tweak of the U18s structure. It’s not a perfect picture, but for a club solely run on good will by volunteers there aren’t enough hands to complete every task. To that end we are always keen to add to our off field team and if you can help us out please contact the club via www. yaxleyfc.com. The first team will be looking to get off to a strong start with what many seasoned observers of the club (A core of mature gentleman supporters, known as the “Cuckoos Ultras”) feel is the strongest squad ever assembled. The front line of Phil Stebbing and skipper Dan Cotton will look to cause defences a lot of problems this season and the return of Rob Hughes in the centre of the park alongside Liam Hook and Kyle Nolan adds creativity alongside hard work and steel. The defence is reinforced by Stuart Wall and hometown lad Ross Watson, both of whom have recently been playing at a higher level. The junior teams have been hard at work in preseason and will be looking to match their impressive haul of trophies from 2015/2016. It’s shaping up to be a really exciting season and I hope you all can’t wait for it to start.
Girls’ football Yaxley Girls Football Club is a growing grassroots football club offering young girls aged 7-15 football, fitness and teamwork from qualified coaches. Training sessions are held during the week to keep the girls in top condition for competing in football matches against other girls teams in the Cambridgeshire area which are held on Saturdays Friendlies and tournaments are also held over summer. An open day will be held on Saturday 3rd September from 9am-12pm, everyone is welcome to attend and find out more about Yaxley Girls FC. There will be games and family entertainment plus a visit from Peterborough United Ladies. Coaches and players will be on hand to answer any questions and share their experiences.
Tough Mudder
By Susan Brookes-Morris
The phrase ‘tough mudder’ is usually heard in relation to events which combine mud and obstacle courses. Inspired by British Special Forces training, they are designed to take participants out of their comfort zone and test physical and mental strength. They also encourage team work as runners often need to help each other in order to complete the course.
Events take place throughout the UK all year round. There are variations on the theme, including shorter ‘half’ courses and special events for children, but all include huge challenges. MUSIC
The Yaxley Festival returns in May 2017. My role is to arrange the music and liaise with the bands and sound crew, both on the day and in the months before the event. Exciting times ahead. The vivid dreams of an amazing wall of sound, showcasing the best in, (predominantly local) music at what is rapidly becoming one of the area’s most massive parties, has only just begun. The sound and lighting crew, the committee as a whole, and myself, are already very busy working to make these visions and hopes come true, for everyone involved. Although bands can usually be put into a genre category, most great musicians rightly draw on multiple influences in style. Therefore, we will not be doing specific genres on certain days. My aim with this Festival is to celebrate with you an eclectic musical journey, through both time and genres, befitting of the fundametal diversity within the ethos of Yaxley Festival, whilst keeping the standard of performance and prowess particularly high, and creating an atmosphere that encapsulates a summer festy vibe on behalf of everyone. This space will introduce some of the musicians who have been booked to play at the Festival, giving a sneak preview of what is to come, alongside links where you can find out more and listen to their music. Specific times and dates of performances will follow and all the latest information will also be on the Yaxley Festival Music Facebook page. So ... let’s get this show on the road!

Mummas and Bubbas On Monday 11 July 2016 Lou Evans, the founder of Mummas & Bubbas Meetup, hosted a Reunion for the first set of Bubbas from 2012 who are due to start big school in September.
There was Bailey, James, Jack, Imogen, Annabelle, Josie, Layla, Louise and Isla who got involved in decorating their initial, making Minion and Ninja Turtle paper plates, where mess was made and fun was had. Which was followed by eating cake and getting to bounce on a bouncy castle. Good luck to those Original Bubbas starting the next step in life at Big School.
Lou runs this group voluntarily for Mums and Babies up to a year old. It’s a friendly, welcoming group based at the British Legion, Yaxley. Starts 1030 till 1130 and costs a £1. It is on every Monday (unless it’s a bank holiday or half term). If you have a little one under a year old and fancy meeting other Mums with similar age children, pop along, Lou will greet you with a smile and make a great cuppa.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact her on 07710 465711.

TASTY HOME COOKING
Recipe Preparation time 35 minutes + cooling. Approximately 2 hours. Serves 6.
Game Pie
Ingredients • 2 tbsp sunflower oil • 800g/ 1lb 12oz boneless mixed game (rabbit, venison, pheasant etc), cut into 2.5cm / 1 inch cubes • 225g / 8oz shallots, peeled and halved • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • 100g / 3.5oz smoked bacon lardons • 175g / 6oz carrots, chopped • 2 sticks celery, roughly chopped • 2 tbsp flour, plus extra for dusting • 300ml / 10fl oz chicken stock • 200ml / 7fl oz red wine • 2 tbsp redcurrant jelly • Few sprigs of fresh thyme • 500g / 1lb 2oz pack puff pastry • Salt and pepper • Beaten egg to glaze
Method Heat half the oil in a large saucepan. Fry the game cubes in batches until brown. Remove the game to a plate and add the remaining oil to the pan, fry the shallots, garlic, lardons, carrots and celery for 10 minutes, stirring until lightly golden in colour.
Preheat the oven to 220C / Gas mark 7. Transfer the game casserole to a large pie dish. Place a pie funnel (if using) in the centre and dampen the rim of the dish with water.
Add the flour to the pan and cook for one minute, then gradually stir in the stock, followed by the red wine, then the redcurrant jelly, and bring to the boil.
Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to about 5cm / 2 inches wider then the dish. Cut a 2.5cm / 1 inch strip of pastry from the outer edge, brush with water and use to line the rim of the dish. Then brush the pastry rim with water and top with the pastry lid. Seal, trim and crimp the pastry edges, and decorate the top of the pie with pastry trimmings.
Return the meat to the pan and add the thyme. Season with salt and pepper, cover and simmer gently for about an hour, until the meat is tender.
Glaze the pie with the beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until the pastry is risen and golden.

ut it doesn’t have to be that way. Exercises such as pilates and yoga can really help to increase strength and flexibility. Physiotherapist and pilates instructor Sue Holmes explains, “Pilates and yoga are both fabulous exercise regimes to help increase the flexibility of your muscles. Both disciplines benefit you by actively working the muscles into an end range stretch, but yoga tends to encourage you to hold the positions for longer than pilates would. A weekly workout is a great way to enhance
your joint and muscle range of movement, which would not be gained by usual day-to-day activity alone.” Pilates and yoga can also help to realign any imbalances. We often favour one side of our body and over time this can limit our range of movement. For example, if you injure your leg, you may adjust your walk so that you’re favouring your good leg. Before long, this can become habit and lead to one side becoming weaker than the other. Pilates and yoga can alert you to these types

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Stiffness, inflexibility, aches and pains… They may seem like an inevitable part of aging, particularly if you have a desk job. By Kate Duggan
of imbalances, and help you to correct them. Pilates and yoga are suitable for most people, whatever their age or level of fitness. The focus is on lowimpact, slow movements. You’ll need comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily, and an exercise mat. Other equipment, such as a pilates ball, will usually be provided by the instructor, although you may want to invest in one to practice on at home. You should be able to find a class that specifically caters for beginners, and there are also several types of yoga classes available to choose from,
including ashtanga, hatha and power yoga. Do choose your instructor wisely. It can be quite easy to hurt your back when exercising, if your instructor doesn’t guide you correctly. Make sure your instructor is fully qualified and, if possible, ask current students for their opinions of the class, before you start. Don’t be put off by the images of size 10 twenty-somethings pulling impossible looking moves. You’ll find all ages, shapes and abilities in a class, and you won’t be expected to tie yourself in knots or push yourself past the point you’re comfortable with. Most people are far too busy trying to figure their own stretches out – they’re not interested in whether you have perfected your downward dog or not.
Key benefits of pilates and yoga include: • Improving and maintaining flexibility • Promoting better posture • Easing lower-back pain • Increasing the strength of core muscles • Improving balance and co-ordination • Reducing stress

PETS
Neutering Part 5 Rats, hamsters & mice There are health risks for keeping small rodents entire (un-neutered) but it is far outweighed by the risk posed to them by general anaesthesia during the intricate neutering surgery. This high risk coupled with their lifestyle of living alone or in same sex groups means neutering is not generally recommended.
Guinea pigs Aggression and unwanted behaviour in entire guinea pigs is not usually a problem. Neutering is normally only needed to avoid unwanted litters if males and females live together. In these cases, it’s usually the boar (male) who would be neutered due to the lower risk compared to spaying the sow (female). Another consideration if you have boars and sows is the risk of pregnancy for older females. If they
As you’ve read in our previous articles, neutering our pets has many benefits for their health, behaviour, safety and the pet population. In our final part we talk about the small furries, but it’s fair to say things are a little more complicated for our pint-sized pets.
are to breed, the sow must have a litter before 9-12 months old. If they are older it is highly likely her pelvis has fused, meaning natural birth is not possible. A caesarian section would be necessary and this poses a high risk to the female.
Ferrets Neutering ferrets is a complicated subject and has many aspects to consider with regards to behaviour and health. Castrating hobs (males), vasectomizing hobs, contraceptive implants and hormone injections for jills (females) are all options but they are not without associated risks. We recommend you discuss your individual circumstances with a Vet to choose the right option for your ferrets.
relatively high for does (females) as they age and neutering eliminates this risk. Aggression is also common in un-neutered rabbits of both sexes, and this can be directed towards other rabbits and other species (including their owners!). Neutered rabbits are generally calmer, more affectionate and easier to manage, making for a more amenable family pet. Rabbits are social animals and the best pairing is a neutered buck and neutered doe.
Rabbits We do recommend neutering male and female rabbits for both health and behavioural reasons. The incidence of uterine cancer is
If you have any questions about neutering, please ask your vet or call Cromwell Vets on 01487 800199 (Sawtry surgery).

How would you like to have an allotment? Fresh veg and fruit, lots of exercise and a great family project!
T
here might soon be some vacant plots on the Belle View site, on the fen soil at the end of Askews Lane, Yaxley. Full size plots are 10 metres by 40 metres, although it is very possible to split a plot with another new tenant. Currently the vacant plots need to be cleared of weeds but this is being done soon. The plots haven't got water on tap but all the current plot holders manage to collect enough rainwater to grow successfully. We are down a rough road/dirt track
but many manage to drive there. It is not too far to walk or cycle either. It is a very peaceful site and we are a friendly, helpful crowd! A great hobby for less than ÂŁ1 a week in rent. Anyone taking on an allotment has to appreciate the time commitment involved. The weeds will grow if they aren't kept in check! But the rewards are an abundance of healthy fruit and veg, not to mention the offers of excess produce from neighbouring plots. A slice of the countryside could be yours to feed your family from!
If you are interested in an allotment call Yaxley parish council on 01733 241958

FARMING
Tom
Farmer By all these lovely tokens, September days are here, with summer’s best of weather, and autumn’s best of cheer
“I’m not depressed; I’m clinically fed-up”. So says Norfolk’s best-known radio DJ, and the same rings true on the farm at a rate of about two days a week. When working with the elements and machinery, the difficult times are when the machinery breaks and the weather is just right for the task, or when the machinery is in good order but the weather says ‘NO’. For me this morning as I write, the weather is beautiful, but my sprayer is, well, you get the picture. It’s hard to be miserable when the sun is shining, but at times, farming pushes all the right (wrong) buttons. When you add animals in to the picture, you more than double the potential for a down day. It could be a lamb in peak condition one day and with four legs in the air the next, or possibly staying up through the night to get a newborn calf to suckle only to watch it slip away. As one wag said: ‘if you’ve got livestock, you’ve also got
H. H. Jackson
deadstock’. No wonder many farmers aren’t interested in football; there are enough highs and lows on the farm before breakfast without opening the back pages. Despite numerous reasons not to be cheerful, September is a joy of a month on the farm. Gone are the humid days of high summer; in their place a chill in the morning air, but warmth and often sunshine throughout the day. We’ll be planting our winter crops in late September – the later we wait, the more chance of beating the weeds, but also the more chance of rain spoiling the crop before the seed is even in the ground. By the end of the month, the early wheat will be sown, and we’ll see the young oilseed rape that we planted in August emerging to battle slug, pigeon, and their nemesis ‘cabbage stem flea beetle’. Spring-born lambs will be growing their winter coats and feasting on the grass, still fresh and
green after all the rain we had in June. This month we’ll enjoy the last of this year’s courgette, cucumber, French beans, marrow, runner beans, spring onions, tomatoes, and greengages, but as they go out of season in September, we also welcome fresh butternut squash, cabbage, and pumpkins from the allotment, damsons, pears, and plums from the orchard, mackerel and oyster from the fishmongers, grouse, duck, and partridge in the game bag, and elderberries, blackberries, and sloes fresh from the hedgerow. Don’t forget to wait for the first frost to prime these last ingredients though; sloe gin drinkers need patience at this time of the year! The ankle-biters will be back to a new school year, and for farmers too, the new season begins here. The only difference is: we’re still in the same class as last year! Have a great September, and thank you for buying local, British produce.
