Yes, I have got married, and I am now Justine Widdall. We enjoyed a fabulous wedding day and it even involved my two boys, the four legged kind, which was a complete surprise to me! A big ‘thank you’ to Sally Howell who looked after the magazine while I was away. I can’t recommend Busy Bee Admin more highly. Rinks open for play Despite all of the bad weather, the green has held up well and with spring finally here, we can get back out on the bowls rinks once again.

1st Yaxley Brownies needs a leader or two to enable the group to stay open after September. Due to many different reasons the existing team of leaders are leaving or taking a break and if the unit is to continue providing Guiding activities to its members,18 girls between 7 and 10 years, then we need some more leaders to run the group. An experienced Brownie leader would be ideal; I am sure there are some out there who would be ready to take on this position. A trained leader with another age group would be fine as conversion training is provided. Even if you have no Guiding/ leading experience I like to hear from you as Unit helpers or Leaders in Training are always needed, not just with this unit but all over the area. You would offer an hour and a half a week, with training in Safeguarding and First Aid being compulsory at the outset and a DBS check will be carried out by Girlguiding. Unit leaders also need to plan activities and attend the occasional area meeting. Someone who could take on the paperwork/accounts would also be very welcome; liaison with the leaders would be required but not necessarily helping at meetings. Training is provided. All positions are open to anyone over 18. 1st Yaxley Brownies currently meet at the Scout and Guide HQ building in Yaxley on a Monday night at 6.30 till 8pm (but this could be changed!) The ‘Green’ will be open for play on Friday 13 April, and we can’t wait! New members are always welcome, so come along for a ‘rollup’ on a Saturday morning, just to see if you like it or not. If you liked the curling at the Winter Olympics, you’ll probably enjoy bowls. This year we will be fielding three teams in the Peterborough and District Midweek League, (the Yaxley Kites, Yaxley Falcons and Yaxley Eagles), two teams in the Weekend League (the Yaxley Sharks and Yaxley Seals), and two teams in the Club 60 League, (the Yaxley Spitfires and the Yaxley Hurricanes), along with a friendly side that plays games across the county. Our members compete for various trophies that are awarded at our Annual Presentation Night, which this year was held on very snowy Friday 2 March at the Farmers Carvery. We all had a very enjoyable evening, with the prizes being presented by Hazel, the wife of this year’s President, Ray Bass.

Les Sharp, pictured above receiving a cup, from Hazel Bass, was the stand out player of the year and won three trophies, including the coveted men’s 4-wood singles. Les will go on to represent the club in the ‘Champion of Champions’ this year, playing against other club winners.

You are no doubt reading this in April. I am however writing to you from a cold and snowy March, deep in the grips of the ‘Beast from the East’. I’m sure by now, future you has forgotten all about it, enjoying as you are a warm, balmy spring/ delightful April shower/post-apocalyptic nuclear winter.

Even so, I think it’s worth considering that climate change might not actually be one of those things that, if we all look the other way, possibly happens to someone else. This could become a regular occurrence. Year in year out we could be dealing with frozen-up boilers, frantic warnings to stay indoors and the sheer desperate panic of shops selling out bread. Whilst it’s fresh in my mind, I’ve decided to put together some actions that we can all work on before next winter to avoid a similar frosty experience… • Firstly, let’s learn the lessons of other countries that regularly have snow and don’t grind to a shuddering halt – they don’t use piddly little gritters, they use snow ploughs. I don’t think its beyond the scope of imagination that we could all chip in for a plough and some industrial strength gloves, and the council could fit it to the front of one of their ride-on lawnmowers. Hey presto the roads are clear, we’re not wading ankle deep through sludge and we can all carry on with our lives!

• Buy a bread maker. Everyone panics at the sight of a single flake and immediately begins stockpiling loaves of bread like they’re preparing for a duck uprising. Suddenly there’s no more bread in the shops, and we all resort to sitting on the kitchen floor weeping, clumsily dabbing the block of cheese into pickle smeared on the front of the cabinets. Stick it to Mr Hovis and bake your own bread, and avoid next year’s panic buying session. • Don’t go jogging in the snow. I saw you – you’re just doing it for attention, don’t pretend you’re not. • Don’t drive like an idiot. Obviously the roads will be clear now thanks to the lawnmower snow plough, however, if we could all just calm down a bit and be sensible, maybe we can make it through a couple of frosty weeks without people limply bashing their cars into each other. Trust me – take my advice now and next years’ snow-pocalypse will be a walk in the park. Although it probably won’t snow next year and we’ll all have forgotten about it by then anyway.

The Haunted History of Huntingdonshire by author, Mark George Egerton The Haunted History of Huntingdonshire explores many of the old county’s ghosts, myths and legends; providing a comprehensive collection of Huntingdonshire ghost stories, along with a wealth of interesting historical facts relating to each haunted location. In some of the stories featured the author was able to spend a night inside the haunted property. A balanced and honest account of what happened is well documented. The book provides a fascinating insight into the world of paranormal investigations. Readers will soon discover that these investigations can vary enormously, from absolutely nothing at all happening, right through to the quite extraordinary! A4 in size, the book also contains over 300 unique colour images. These images and illustrations are all set out to allow the reader to actually see what they are reading about. Without wanting to give too much away, the reader might also find the odd image of a REAL ghost or two!

Fresh Perspectives in Volunteering

Yaxley WI In February we welcomed back Chelsea Pensioner Madge Coles (one of only 15 women amongst 650 men as it is only fairly recently that women have been admitted). Madge gave such an interesting talk last year we wanted to hear more. Madge did not disappoint with her fascinating tales of life as a Chelsea Pensioner and the opportunities to take part in events such as Remembrance Day, not to mention free entrance to Chelsea Flower Show and Chelsea Football Club. Although Madge enjoys the life she said that it doesn't suit everyone and that after a trial run some people don't stay on, however I think some of us were quite envious of her! We had a completely different meeting in March when Robin Wilson and three colleagues performed a radio play that he had written with a surprise ending. They all worked really hard to entertain us and provided lots of laughs! Our next meeting is at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm) on Thursday 12 April in the upstairs room (stairlift available) at The Lancaster Club, Main St, Yaxley when our speaker will be Sue Stephenson talking of her memories of the Swinging Sixties. Visitors very welcome.

People Powered is hosted by Living Sport, a charity that’s dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of people in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough through participation in sport and physical activity, and Hunts Forum, which provides support to help voluntary and community organisations in Huntingdonshire set up, develop and grow. For the most part, social media networks offer great opportunities for young people to make new friends, share common interests, learn and have fun. However, the use of social media also brings risks, with internet safety being one of the most pressing issues facing parents in the digital age.

cyberbullying?

yberbullying continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing young people online, with one in five young people experiencing it. Cyberbullying has all the hallmarks of playground-type bullying, but doesn’t stop at the school gates – it follows young people home as they use phones, tablets and computer games. And it can have a devastating impact, sometimes causing those subjected to it to experience social anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, self-harm and eating disorders. So, it’s important to take a young person seriously if they tell you they

are being bullied. However, parents may not always be aware that their child is being bullied. Some common warning signs may include low mood, loss in appetite, a desire for isolation, sudden changes in behaviour and a decrease in the time spent focusing on their studies. And let’s not forget the bullies. Some young people who bully others do so as a coping mechanism for their own trauma and stressful situations. They too may need help. Sometimes all a young person needs is someone to talk to.

Yaxley Public Hall soon to be 100 Yaxley Public Hall will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2021. The hall opened as a memorial to the Yaxley boys who lost their lives in the First World War. It was built by volunteer labourers and farmers who sent their men with a horse and cart to collect the bricks from the Norman Cross brickyard. The hall was formerly an officers’ mess which was found on Main Street. In the 1950s a brick extension was added, providing a large upstairs room which could be used for meetings or family parties and gatherings. The hall has, during its time, seen different user groups come and go. It has enabled many and varied services and pastimes to be offered to the people of Yaxley and surrounding villages, depending on the preferred activities of the time. In the 40s and 50s tea dances and whist drives were the order of the day. More recently, martial arts, table tennis, dog training, drama groups for both adults and children, war games, band practice, jumble sales, fêtes, quizzes and much more. Currently there are three main user groups; Yaxley Amateur Players, Yaxley Table Tennis Club and the Norman Cross Crusaders. There are also various bands who hire the hall to practise and occasional parties are held here. The hall is a registered charity, given over by the militaryvto the people of Yaxley to meet and pursue activities which benefit the community. We are determined that this should continue. The population of Yaxley is set to rise in the next few years. The Public Hall has enormous

potential to provide a fantastic space to help meet the needs of this growing community. We want to ensure that this legacy of those who lost their lives continues to serve the people by providing them with an accessible and suitable community hall. To this end we have set up a fundraising committee to refurbish the hall and ensure that it can continue to provide a quality venue. Our first target is the refurbishment of the toilets, for which we aim to raise £5,000. We are asking for help to regenerate Yaxley Public Hall and ensure its lasting legacy as one of Yaxley’s older monuments!

Calling all budding gardeners ... Are you are keen to learn about the joys of allotments? We would also like to hear from allotment holders willing to pass on their knowledge to others in our community. Yaxley Parish, Huntingdonshire District and Cambridgeshire County Council and Care Network are working together to provide an allotment for the community off Broad Drove. Within this allotment we are providing a section with stable paths and raised beds for our less mobile residents and other sections for Yaxley people to learn while enjoying the fruits of their labours. We already have local businesses interested in assisting this project with grants or supplying tools, seeds etc. Schools have also shown an interest in working on this project including their request for a strawberry bed. The community allotment is about different parts of our community coming together, young and old, able and less able bodied and people willing to learn with others wishing to pass on their extensive knowledge. God’s holy spirit was to ‘embiggen’ us

Many of you will know that I am a big fan of The Simpsons. Well, the other day I read that a word made up by the writers in 1996 has entered the American dictionary.

The Night Shelter ended on 11 March and was, once again, a wonderful rewarding time. The seven Churches involved around the City welcomed the ladies and gentlemen , who through various problems in their lives, have ended up living on the streets of Peterborough.

The word is ‘embiggen’ and means to make bigger! It’s used in the motto of Springfield, the town where the Simpsons live. The motto is “A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man”. We’ve just commemorated Jesus’ death and celebrated his resurrection at the first Easter. Just before he died, Jesus told his friends that it was in their best interests that he returned to heaven. That was because when Jesus returned to heaven God sent the Holy Spirit to the disciples and all who believe in Jesus. Why? In order to ‘embiggen’ them and us. One of the many great privileges of believing and trusting in Jesus is that we are embiggened by God’s Holy Spirit. To re-state the Springfield motto: “The Holy Spirit embiggens the smallest person”. However small we might feel we are able to act powerfully when we are filled with God’s Holy Spirit. If you would like to find out more about the God who both loves us and embiggens us, you would be very welcome to attend the Alpha course which starts at St Peter’s this month. Alpha is an opportunity for you to ask your questions and to explore the basics of the Christian faith. The weekly course is free and starts at 7.30pm on Thursday April 12. There was extra provision during the days when we were all sheltered from the icy, snowy conditions in our warm houses, not able to go to school or college or struggling into work. St Marks Church in partnership with the City Council opened a temporary day time centre. Providing food, warmth, companionship, games, papers and advice. In the less snowy days many of these guests helped out at the Olive Branch Community Garden in Dogsthorpe. Their days were less lonely and passed more quickly than they would out on the streets. There were successes with people finding work, being offered and accepting accommodation and a couple of people having medical help that they desperately needed. Watching their spirits lift and hearing how they have been assisted in moving to a more positive life in some way is reward enough for giving just a little time.

Coffee Mornings

Our coffee mornings are becoming so popular that we are having to make more cakes to meet the demand. It is lovely to see our regulars and new people coming along and enjoying tea, cakes, scones and companionship. With ladies from Farcet joining us and a rush on the cheese scones don't miss out, why not come along on the second Saturday morning every month. Our Sunday Service and Junior Church start at 10.30 every week. Everyone is welcome to come and join us. Coffee Morning is on the 14 April starting at 10am. t’s April! Happy Birthday to me, and ‘Happy Easter’ to you all! Although spring technically began on Thursday 20th March this year, it felt like winter clung on to the bitter end. The fertiliser that we typically spread in early March and the spring wheat and barley that we aim to sow around 15th March will be lucky to be in the ground by Easter. I hope by the time you’re reading this that it’ll be a lot warmer, and a LOT drier. And no more talk about April showers please – we have enough moisture in the land to keep us going until June! I’m hoping for the kind of April day described by Harriet Prescott Spofford (what a great name!)

Lamb is very much in season in April and we’ll be delivering boxed lamb throughout the local area in April – you can order on the website at www. villagefarm.org.uk. As well as lamb, and ‘spring’ onion of course, the three wonderful ‘W’s are in - watercress, wild garlic, and winkles, as well as venison, rocket and a treasure trove from the sea including cockles, oysters, crab, and sardines. In your garden you can plant out your second potatoes as well as sowing beetroot, carrots, Swiss chard, summer cauliflower, kohl rabi, lettuce, leeks, radish, turnip,

spring and pickling onions, peas and perpetual spinach. You can sow marrows, courgettes, pumpkins, squash, sweet peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, celery, celeriac, salads and globe artichokes, but indoors as it’s still a bit too chilly for them outdoors. April will be a busy month this year, as although Easter is early, spring has sprung late (and brought the monsoon rains with it) so we’ll be squeezing all that March labour into an already busy April. Have a fantastic April, look out for quality, British food in the shops, and I’ll see you again in my favourite month, MAY!

Sing for Life for charity Once again raising money for the city’s much-loved Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. Launching in May, the project will take 40 local women with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset Theatre on 21 July. “I’m so pleased I got involved!” says Rachel Francis, who took part last year. "I would walk out of every rehearsal in a fabulous frame of mind, and the progress we made every week was incredible – it was so exciting! Standing on stage and performing in front of my friends and family was amazing, I’ll never forget that feeling! Add to that the fact you’re raising money for a brilliant cause, why wouldn’t you come along and find out more?” “Sing for Life is not about finding the next Adele; it’s about helping ordinary women find their voice” says William Prideaux, the project’s director. “So many

Tax Deductions for Family Member Wages? Many adults are likely to embrace the offer of help with technology from the younger generation! So where a child is employed in a family business to work on, say, website creation, management and social media, how can the owner make sure that their wages will be tax deductible? The recent case of Nicholson v HMRC, in which the first tier tax tribunal (FTT) examined a deduction made in sole trader’s accounts for his university student son, gives us some food for thought. In this case, Mr Nicholson claimed that his son had been employed in promoting the business through internet and leaflet distribution and computer work. His wages had been calculated at a rate of £10 per hour for 15 hours per week, but unfortunately there was no evidence to support wages being paid on this basis. HMRC rejected the claim because of a lack of contemporaneous records preventing a successful reconciliation from the business bank statements. Mr Nicholson claimed that payments to his son had been paid partly through the ‘provision of goods’. He only managed to identify some bank credits and a monthly direct debit pf £18.51 for home insurance costs. However, the bulk of the claim was based on Mr Nicholson buying food and drink to help support his son at university. The tribunal made reference to an earlier judgement in Dollar & Dollar v Lyon (HMRC), which also involved payments to family members, and concluded that Mr Nicholson’s payments were made out of ‘natural parental love and affection’. There was a duality of purpose as the ‘wages’ had a major underlying ‘private and personal’ motive, and thus not for the purposes of the trade. The tribunal subsequently dismissed the appeal on the grounds that Mr Nicholson was doing nothing more than supporting his son at university. In particular, this case highlights the importance of keeping proper records regarding the basis in which payments are to be made to children. The FTT commented that the likelihood of a successful claim would have been increased had there been correct records of payments and hours worked. A direct link between the business account and the recipient’s account would clearly be advisable. Whilst there was no suggestion here that employing relatives is an issue in itself, the importance of paying a commercial rate for the work undertaken should be noted. The concept of ‘equal pay for equal value’ should help prevent a suggestion of dual purpose and thus, in turn, also help refute allegations of excessive payments to family members as a means of extracting monies from the business. Finally, wherever payments are made to a family member, legal issues such as the national minimum wage should also be borne in mind.

Growing up beyond the camp As we grew older and were allowed to venture further. A field opposite the entrance of the camp was a big playground, if you could avoid Bonny the horse that was sometimes there.

he field was pasture, with cowslips, wild flowers and mushrooms growing in it. There was a big pond in the middle, which we kept well away from. At the bottom of the field was the brook which ran through Holme and beyond that, the airfield. In summer this was a great place for picnics; quickly made jam or

another meeting point, and a place of fascination as to where the path went. Walking further along the lane there were two lay-bys on each side of the road. On the left was an entrance to a strip of waste ground with a concrete road through it and at the bottom you came across the brook again, where you could

sugar sandwiches were made by mums for the kids to take to the field. At the entrance to the field was a big wooden gate, just right for climbing and sitting on. Car spotting was another activity, mind you, the cars were few and far between. Further down the lane (the B660 running towards the A1) was a big white gated entrance to the woods, which was

get down to it and paddle. On the waste ground there were remnants of the airfield again; good for fun and games. We used to be out all day exploring and playing, our bellies used to tell us when it was time to go home for tea. Both of my grandparents lived at the opposite end of the village, but visiting them both was always an adventure. One gran lived near the

railway – we are talking steam trains here – and the railway yard was full of buildings and hidey places, if we didn’t get caught! It was nothing to play on the tracks behind the house looking out for the trains either going off to Peterborough or London. We would sit on the fence waving to the engine drivers and passengers (a touch of ‘The Railway Children’). There was a bridge over the tracks near the station where we would go to spot train numbers and stand on the top when the trains went under, watching them disappearing in the smoke. My other grandparents lived in Pig and Whistle Yard, which ran down beside the then Railway Arms public house. At the entrance to the yard was a pond full of goldfish. Their house was tiny and always smelling of my grandad’s pipe. We would walk everywhere, as we did not have cars, always finding apples to scrump and having lots of fun. A field in Short Drove used to flood and, especially in winter, freeze over, making a skating rink for the brave to skate on. I remember our dog once fell through the ice and we spent a long time fretting to see if she would get out, which she did in the end. When I was about 10 they started to build the council houses that you see today, and gradually one by one the Nissan hut dwellers moved into them and the huts were pulled down. Gradually, the big circle turned into a big round grassy green, ready for the next generation to play on. Next month - School Days

Farcet C of E This has been a fabulous month at Farcet with visits, visitors and lots of hands-on learning! As part of their Towers, Turrets and Tunnels topic, our Year 1 and 2 Edison Class visited Oakham Castle. The children had a fantastic time experiencing medieval life first-hand and were great representatives for our school. The children took part in activities such as preparing decorations for the banquet table, making gingerbread using a traditional recipe, creating a toy similar to one which children of the time played with and getting muddy building a traditional wall! However, it is fair to say that the highlight of the day for everyone was the knight training with Sir John! All the children thoroughly enjoyed this, particularly as they were allowed to charge at Sir John with their swords! Uncle Wedzi from the African Heritage Centre visited our

Reception and Year 1 Newton Class to 'kick-off' in style their topic - Why do zebras have stripes? They experienced African drumming and other native musical instruments along with lots of dancing and storytelling. The children also learnt about African animals, foods and dress. They had a fantastic time, enjoying every minute and are now very eager to further explore Africa. The great learning experiences have also continued into KS2. As part of their Tremors topic, our Year 3 and 4 Brunel Class designed volcanos with words and phrases to capture the reader’s attention. They are reading the book "Pebble in my Pocket" and created artwork inspired by the text. Year 5 and 6 in Stephenson Class have been investigating shapes and had great fun building 3D shapes using cocktail sticks and sweets!

Family Sessions start at Yaxley Infant School Family SEAL (Social, Emotional, Aspects of Learning) started this term. Every Friday afternoon parents are invited in for coffee and biscuits to discuss parenting. These sessions are always popular and Mrs Dean and Mrs Warcup our fantastic Family Link Workers who facilitate the sessions were over the moon with parental responses. We are now fully booked! As part of the discussion a programme is delivered which helps parents with the complex job of being a parent. We are also thrilled to have our Family Worker from the district team attend the sessions to provide further support and advice. At Yaxley Infant School our key focus is our children’s well-being as well as PSHE (Personal, social, health and emotional education). Providing these sessions is testament to our core value of children’s emotional well-being. This has also been confirmed by our recent visit from Holly Hodge at “Keeping your head” to see the good work we do here. In last month’s article we mentioned our school’s priority in pursuing “Maths Mastery”. Our children’s views or “Pupil Voice” as it is sometimes referred to as incredibly important to us. We use this to shape and mould our practice to provide the best education. This is what our children said;

April is peak season for solitary bee activity in the garden and countryside.

Solitary Bees If you have been planning to make or put up a solitary bee home make sure it is up early this month otherwise there will be few tenants before 2019. There are over 250 types of solitary bee in the UK alone of which less than one percent are capable of stinging. The majority are early season specialists, though a few, such as the ivy bee, come out in autumn. As the name implies these bees neither live in hives nor colonies but on their own, with fertilised females laying eggs with individual pollen bundles to hatch out in the spring of the following year. Many of the solitary bees are ground nesting, creating little mounds similar to worm casts

especially in more sandy ground, others can be found nesting in lime mortar walls digging tunnels into the mortar, or nesting in hollowed tubes which is where the solitary bee homes come in. If you have a solitary bee home you can generally divide the users into two categories; the leafcutters who seal off the tubes with carefully cut leaves and the mason bees who seal off with mud. It can be interesting o measure the balance of these two groups nesting from year to year to see if there is much change. Solitary bees are the most important pollinators of flowers and vegetables in the country so their appearance is most welcome and fruitful.

In most cases the answer is 'no'! If you have a very weedy and tired looking lawn, even after our first visit, you’ll notice a huge difference. We aim to remove at least half of the weeds after our first visit and our unique fertiliser feeds the lawn to give it a lush green colour.

Acupuncture for animals You might have heard that we are imminently opening our very own Animal Rehabilitation Centre (ARC) in Sawtry offering physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture and K-Laser®. In the last few months we’ve told you more about physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. This month we are going to tell you about another service Cromwell ARC offers – acupuncture.

cupuncture is the use of very fine needles to stimulate specific points in the body for the treatment of illness and injury. Acupuncture has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years, but there is a lot of evidence for its benefit in modern western medicine too. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is thought that acupuncture stimulates the flow of positive energy (Qi pronounced ‘Chee’) through set meridians or channels in the body. Western theory is that the needles stimulate sensory nerves under the skin and that this causes both a neurological and hormonal response within the body. There is a lot of evidence that acupuncture has an effect via the autonomic nervous system which controls most of the bodily functions that occur without conscious thought.

Is it safe for my pet and will it hurt them?

Acupuncture is an extremely safe treatment. The needles are very small and most animals, even cats and rabbits, will accept acupuncture without discomfort. It is rare for there to be a pain response to such a fine needle. Far from hurting the pet, acupuncture has been shown to cause an endorphin response which is the happy hormone, making them come away feeling relaxed and possibly sleepy.

What can acupuncture help with?

Acupuncture can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions. At Cromwells we mostly use it to treat musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis, hip and elbow dysplasia, after injury, and

intervertebral disc disease. It can aid healing and can provide relief from pain.

Can my pet have acupuncture if they are having other treatments?

Acupuncture is best used in conjunction with other treatment modalities including most medicines (with a few exceptions) and it can work very well in

combination with physiotherapy and hydrotherapy.

Can I claim on insurance?

Most insurance companies do pay for acupuncture. This falls under complementary therapy and often has a separate excess and separate limit to any veterinary treatment. Always check with your own insurance policy to clarify what type of cover you have.
