Alison McGuinness, President
Celebrating 70 Years Holme WI celebrated 70 years at our March meeting. With special guests invited, we had a very busy but thoroughly enjoyable evening with our guest speaker the actor and tv presenter, Warwick Davis. Warwick arrived at the hall with his wife Sammy, and they brought a cake to help us celebrate. Warwick thoroughly entertained us with his life as an actor and tv presenter, starting out as an Ewok in The Return of the Jedi, part of the Star Wars franchise, and how film director George Lucas wrote the film Willow with Warwick in mind for the lead role. Although film director Ron Howard insisted Warwick audition for the role as he wanted to see if he was good enough. During the making of this film he struck up a friendship with actor Val
Kilmer, a friendship that is still going strong today. Although Warwick was upset when Val Kilmer broke his specially brought sunglasses as they were waiting to fly to New Zealand, Val Kilmer thought he didn’t look right in his cheaper sunglasses and instead gave him a pair of genuine Ray Bans. Warwick has spent quite a lot of time in pantomime, and it was during one of these that he met Sammy, who became his wife, after what he called ‘lots of wooing’. Today he is still busy with the Star Wars franchise, who thought it would still be going strong 40 years after the original film. He also presents the quiz show Tenables, and will soon be heard as the voice of Sniff in a new adaptation of The Moomins. Warwick gave us an amusing insight into the world of film and television, with our

members and guests rolling with laughter, but was also very frank about his size and the heartache both he and Sammy have suffered through the years. Holme WI has been extremely fortunate to have Warwick as our guest speaker at our special birthday, although he lives in the village, it doesn’t mean that he drops in all the time, although he would always be welcome and so is Sammy. Anyone interested in joining, please come along and see what we are all about and what we get up to. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. Please contact holmewi2015@gmail.com for further details. All ladies will receive a warm and friendly welcome.
YAXLEY WI Unfortunately our February speaker cancelled at the last minute (hopefully this will be the only one this year!) so we decided to have a social evening which gives everyone a chance to catch up with friends who they may only see from month to month. We had a few games of bingo for small prizes which everyone seemed to enjoy and this was followed by drinks and a slice of delicious valentine cake after which we held a cake auction. This is always a good fund raiser and in the absence of our usual auctioneer Phyllis Black who was ill Joyce Johnson was a very able stand in. Our next meeting is at our usual venue of The Lancaster Club, MainStreet, Yaxley and takes place at 7.30 on 11 April when our speaker will be David Wallwork who will be speaking about a school founded by him.

Your Local Family Lawyer
by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
I began my legal career in a property department but soon came to realise that I preferred the more personal side of law and moved to work within a family department. That was in January 2000, and I fully qualified as a family lawyer in October 2003. I enjoy helping family clients achieve Testimonials an outcome which is best for them and their children and moves them forward to a happier future. Clients come to us when they are going through a difficult time and my job is to guide them and find the best outcome for their particular circumstances. Many of my clients say I am approachable, unflappable, organised and friendly. Clients say I have an ability to explain complex issues to them in a straightforward, easy to understand way which in turn allows them to make informed decisions about their case. I have a young family of my own and understand just how difficult it is to juggle the demands of a family and how that is even more difficult in the face of a family breakdown or separation. I am a Resolution family law member and a qualified family mediator. I am based in the Peterborough and St Neots area and help clients locally but also from all areas of the country. With the IT available now it is not always essential to be close by. I am just as happy assisting clients by telephone email or Skype rather than the more traditional office environment. This also means that I am not restricted to office hours and can speak to clients at other times when the need arises.
“Abby was recommended to me and from that very first call, I was very happy I’d found the right person. She was sympathetic to my situation but told me as it was and in a way I could understand. I would highly recommend Abby to anyone. Rachel It was the best service I have ever used. Personnel were very helpful in each step. Received lots of information on how to deal with divorce and what to do after. The best thing I liked was that it was dealt very quickly. Mrs K Abby listened to our complex case with compassion. Her on-going support and advice has been exceptional, she always returns E-Mails promptly and telephones when arranged. Her support throughout this harrowing ordeal has been invaluable and we couldn’t have asked for more from any lawyer..” Anton
How I can help I can assist clients with any family law enquiries including divorce and separation, financial disputes, pension queries, arrangements for children, domestic violence, pre-nuptial agreements, civil partnerships, living together agreements and cohabitation disputes. I offer all new clients a free initial 30 minute no obligation telephone consultation at a time to suit them
Do you know how much state pension you will receive when you retire? You can find this figure through your online personal tax account (PTA) or sign up for one at https://www.gov. uk/personal-tax-account and click on ‘view state pension forecast’. People who reach state retirement age after 5 April 2016 need 35 full years of national insurance contributions (NIC) to qualify for the full state pension. Your personal tax account also shows any gaps in your NIC record. An incomplete NIC year will be recorded for periods in which you were contracted out of the state pension. If you are still under state pension age (which is gradually increasing to 68)
you can continue to pay NIC or collect NIC credits to boost the amount of your state pension. Self-employed individuals need to pay class 2 NIC of £153.40 for 2018-19 to achieve a full NIC year. If you are employed you can accrue a full year of NIC for free by earning between £6,032 and £8,424 for 2018-19. If you are neither employed nor self-employed you can pay class 3 NIC on a voluntary basis at £14.65 per week. Class 3 NIC can also be used to fill gaps in your NIC record for the last six years. Please note that these rates were increased for the current 2019-2020 tax year.
If you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.

This month I’m going to talk about The National Garden Scheme. This wonderful initiative gives garden-lovers unique access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales. It also raises money for nursing and health charities through admission fees, teas and cake. Beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute. By opening your garden to visitors, you’ll give people a great day out, and raise money to help those in need. Even better you’ll connect with a community of like-minded garden-owners, all passionate about their beautiful gardens.
Is your garden worth visiting? Do friends and family wax lyrical about your plot? Do neighbours ask for advice and cuttings? Do you sometimes wish you could show other people the result of all your hard work? If you answered yes to these questions, then it’s very likely other people would love to see your garden too. It might seem a somewhat daunting experience but opening your garden to the public can be very enjoyable. Many people get the bug and open their
gardens year after year. Most people start by opening once in a year, but many go on to open twice a year, to show off their garden in different seasons. You don’t need a big garden. There are some tiny plots in the NGS. What matters is quality, character and interest. NGS will support you all the way with their network of helpful, friendly volunteers. Initially you’ll be visited by one of the team during the season you
feel your garden would look best. And if you don’t feel as though garden is worthy of being part of the scheme, why not visit open gardens in your area to gain inspiration, hints and tips, make new gardening friends, and raise a bit of money for charity. Happy gardening. Call 01483 211 535 to speak to one of the NGS team or visit www.ngs.org.uk

Youth Development The Yaxley FC youth development continues to go from strength to strength. with all teams progressing really well this season. The 2018/19 season saw YFC launch their first under sevens team for quite some time, and their addition to
Great Day Out
the league has been very successful and not to mention popular. In fact so much has the popularity been that in January we began development of a second team in this age group to ensure more children get to play the beautiful game. Yaxley Under sevens blacks are now running strong and have just taken part in their third embankment tournament of the year to good success, it is certainly smiles all round. With multiple tournaments booked for over the summer the plan is that Yaxley Football club will have two teams running in the under eights category next season, which is quite the achievement considering this age group was non-existent last season and this reinforces the YFC policy of development and football for all. With the under seven blues firmly established in the league all ready, we are excited about this addition of the blacks to the cuckoo family and look forward to seeing the continued development and smiles that comes from playing for YFC.
In February the under seven players got treated to a great experience when they were invited to be mascots for the Yaxley first team. The boys got to play a game on the main pitch, before walking out with all the players as mascots for the match. At half time they then took part in a penalty competition against James Blake, the YFC goalkeeper. A late winner for Yaxley topped off a perfect day and it was great to see so much of the community cheering them all on.
U7s as Mascots for the Day Another team progressing well under their coaches guidance are Yaxley Black U10’s who recently travelled to play Nottingham Forest Academy Elite team. The Blacks came away winners and really enjoyed the experience. Well done Yaxley Black at Nottingham Forest Academy.
Cricket returns to the village this summer Cricket in the village has a great history going back to well before the 1960s (I’ll research how far back) when players from the village would take on teams in the old Peterborough League, often with success but always with the intention of people getting together to have a good time with friends and to play some sport. Yaxley Cricket Club was also a breeding ground of talent, it’s young cricketers regularly winning the Hunts U17s cup and many of the players from that side represented their county at U15, U17 and U19 level, some even went on to trial for professional counties. In recent years the cricket club folded and cricket has since totally disappeared from the village, leaving parents with boys and girls who have an interest in cricket to look outside the village, and for senior players to find new teams to play for.
That is all set to change with the re-introduction of cricket to the village in 2019, which is being led by Dominic McMullan, a former Yaxley player who has a plan to get the country’s favourite summer sport back on the agendas of the people of Yaxley. The first step has been to engage with the Huntingdonshire Cricket Board, to put plans in place for Yaxley to deliver the ‘All Stars Cricket’ programme, a nationwide scheme to give kids from 5-10 years old a taste of cricket for the first time.
More details on All Stars Cricket in the village are to be confirmed soon, with dates, venues and details soon to follow, if you’d like more information on All Stars Cricket go to: www.ecb.co.uk/play/all-stars Everything needs a starting point, and Dominic believes there will be high levels of interest from parents in the village who want to get their children involved in All Stars, which could in the future lead to the creation of junior teams, and maybe a little further down the line the reintroduction of Senior Cricket too.
2019 is one of the most important years for cricket in this country, we have the Cricket World Cup being played in June and July, which England are the favourites to win, and a visit from the old enemy Australia for a home Ashes series, so what better year to bring back the great game of cricket to the village. If you want to get in touch with Dominic and the Cricket Club, all contact details are below including how to find the clubs social media accounts, so please drop him a line and get following and liking!

Folksworth School Bringing our learning to life What a busy time we have had at Folksworth recently. Well, I say ‘at’ Folksworth…as we break up for the Easter holidays, we pause to reflect on the term of trips we have just had! Although we invest a lot of time and resources making sure our school is an inspiring learning environment, we also seek lots of opportunities to take our children out of school to enhance their education. Trips carried out this term include: Oak Class had a day at the Think Tank Museum in Birmingham, exploring the many ways science impacts on our everyday lives - yesterday, today and for many tomorrows to come A group of students from years 3, 4, 5 and 6 went on a residential to the Horstead Centre, where they pushed themselves to complete a huge range of challenges and outdoor activities. We are so proud of their achievements, but not as proud as they are! We also arranged a trip to KidZania in London – the indoor city where children get a chance to try different careers and earn money for their efforts Whatever else we may have given up in Lent, you can see that it certainly wasn’t getting out-and-about to bring our learning to life!
Folksworth Pre-School Thanks to the kind generosity of Folksworth Parish Council and NISA at Stilton, our children have had a busy month learning about time and space. We have been testing simple concepts, such as timing how long it takes a car to travel down a tube using a stop watch and exploring space and how long it takes the planets to travel around the sun. The children have been building their vocabulary by naming the planets and moons. They all became astronauts after one child told us “girls can’t be astronauts.” We discussed this as a group and agreed girls most certainly can be astronauts and used our imaginations to travel into space using our giant space pod! We still have a few remaining spaces for the summer term and are now taking bookings for September 2019. If you would like to come and have a look round and meet the team, please call Niki on 07542 172075 or email manager.folksworthpreschool@gmail.com

William de Yaxley The Year Six Journalist group have chosen to write about the topic of “Caring for our Yaxley Community” in this edition in response to ongoing issues that they feel passionate about. They want to raise the following issues with you all to consider: Yaxley is a lovely family place that has, until recently been clean and safe, but now rubbish has started to be dumped, property is being broken and damaged and some of us are feeling unsafe in our own village. The children at William de Yaxley are not happy about this situation. We want the residents of Yaxley to take action with us now. At school we have and follow three simple rules: “Take care of yourself, Take care of others, and Take care of the school”. We feel that if everyone applied these rules to our community it would be a much better place to live and play. Litter is being carelessly thrown away and this is putting the younger residents of Yaxley at risk of danger, not to mention how untidy and unkempt it makes our village look too. Please make sure YOU put your rubbish in the bins provided. Dog Owners are not taking responsibility for their animal’s mess. We frequently see dog mess left on paths and walkways. This is causing us to feel worried and upset. Dog mess is thoroughly unpleasant and if trodden in can cause distress. Dog Owners, please ensure that you always have Pooh Bags with you when you walk your dog, and pick up their mess – this is your responsibility! Vandalism appears to be a growing problem in Yaxley. One of the most disgusting habits we have seen is people spitting out chewing gum and
not disposing of it in the bins provided. Please stop this! We have also noticed Graffiti. Destruction and defacement of public places, play equipment and park areas– this is ruining the chances for children to have fun outside. Please take care of our parks and public spaces. Public smoking concerns us for a number of reasons: It will make Yaxley, a once happy place, a deserted wasteland where people will not want to meet and play The amount of smoke in the area could impact on the health and wellbeing of all through passive smoking Litter and dropped cigarettes will make our village unclean and unpleasant Please, if you are a smoker, have some thought for those of us who are not. Finally, our biggest worry is that of Gang Culture and how this seems to be growing and affecting our community. Gangs are setting a bad example to all through their use of bad language, poor behaviour and inappropriate use of facilities and parks. We urge all gang members to think about the effect they are having on the children and community where they live. The important message we would like the residents of Yaxley to take from this is to help us to keep safe and keep Yaxley clean and tidy. We would really like for things to change for the better. We are hopeful that the Community of Yaxley will take on board the points we have raised and take joint responsibility to ensure our community is treated correctly by all of us – we all have a responsibility to be the best example that we can be!
Year 5 and 6 pupils recently enjoyed a visit to the Space Centre in Leicester
Farcet C. of E. Primary School We always look forward to educational visits and our Year 5 and 6 pupils recently enjoyed a visit to the Space Centre in Leicester as part of their topic on Stargazing. The children loved the hands-on exhibitions and learnt many things during the day. Without a doubt, the highlight of the visit was the film shown in the planetarium. The graphics were amazing to watch and it taught us what it was like to be an astronaut. The writing that we completed after the trip showed how much the children had learnt during the day, but also how much they had enjoyed it.
We are currently taking part in Bishop Stephen’s Lent Challenge which this year is all about considering older members of our community and their needs as they grow older. As part of this, our school community are busy knitting little hats for the Age UK and Innocent ‘Big Knit’ campaign, we have had some wonderfully creative hats sent into school which our inspiring our Year 5 and 6 knitting club! A big thank you to all involved!

Janice Osborn , District Commissioner, Yaxley
Guides is for girls from 10 to 14 years of age. You don’t have to have been a Brownie to become a Guide, in fact it’s about 50:50 in most units. Guides in Yaxley meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and in Holme on Mondays. They are led and supported by volunteer leaders. Guides is a safe, girl only space which is very valuable at this age and we provide something for the girls which is not provided at school or in other youth groups. Being a Guide from the age of 10 provides a little continuity when girls change schools at 11, which is a big scary step for them. We welcome all girls, Guiding is an inclusive organisation. Girls with special needs may need extra family support and we welcome their carers too. There is lots of information about the Guiding programme on the website but briefly we work on Skills Builders together, girls try new things and gain awards. We have some pre-planned Unit meeting activities which take about half the meeting time and leaders have freedom to go “off piste” the rest of the time. Girls work on badges at home and if they gain enough points in all these 3 areas they can achieve an award. Along the way they learn, working alone and as a team, pick up leadership, listening and
co-operative skills. And we all have lots of fun and laughs along the way. This can be a challenging age group to manage; girls aged 10 are very different from 14 year olds and they are all beginning to assert their independence and build their confidence . We always have a need for happy, confident women to come in as leaders to provide great role models. We also love to have Young Leaders (aged 14 to 18) to help with Guides –you don’t need to have been in guiding before. Both Yaxley groups are in need of an adult Assistant Leader or Unit Helper – no qualifications are required but a positive attitude and a smile are both assets. You would need to undergo ID and DBS checking which is paid for by Girlguiding. There is a Leader Training scheme leading to the Girlguiding Leadership Qualification for those who want to become qualified but it’s not compulsory! You can find out more on the website www.girlguiding.org and when you’ve had a look there is a link to the registration site for girls to join at any age from 5 to 18, and also for adults to volunteer for whatever you have time for.
I am more than happy to chat to anyone about getting involved in Guiding, or if you register on the website we will get in touch with you. My number is 01487 831451 e: janiceo.girlguiding@gmail.com
Fourfields Whether it’s inside the school day or outside of it, our Fourfields children know how to make the most of their time! An amazing girls went to The Dance festival at The Cresset Theatre and stormed onto the stage in Wild West Costume to perform a really fantastic dance. There were a few line dancing steps thrown in as well as an opportunity for some of our cheerleading and gymnast stars to shine in tumbles and cartwheels. They really impressed. Of course, this sort of performance doesn’t happen
overnight and the team have been working hard after school and over some lunchtimes to perfect their routine and did us all proud on the night. We have Miss Smith to thank for these well-rehearsed moves and for giving up her time to get all the dancers stage ready! We really are so fortunate to have our own school garden and the amazing Mrs Warrener and were lucky to have been able to make the most of the glorious weather in later February to open the garden officially
and start planting. The gardeners have all been in attendance and have worked hard every lunchtime to get us back on track. Special thanks to Mr Warrener too for re-building our raised beds. Our Year 2 children came back to a really exciting start of term when on Monday they spent the day with Circus Sensible for their learning “What makes a show great?”They learned lots of new skills on the day including juggling, stilt walking, plate spinning and balancing. a wonderful time and got to grips with some new skills. 7 March saw the whole school celebrate World Book Day in style. There was a vast array of different book characters walking the school corridors and everyone enjoyed sharing in a wide variety of reading activities. We’re still looking for ‘Where’s Wally?’ though!
New governers required We are trying to recruit new governors. As a governor you would offer support to help with the running of the school. Governors’ meetings are termly and usually held in the evenings although some meetings can be during the school day. If you are interested in this rewarding role and want to give something back to the Yaxley community then please give us a call on the number below. Governors with local knowledge and links to other industries can make a huge difference to the development of the school and our children.

pawsforthought Cromwell Vets ‘extracurricular’ Not just caring for your pets Every summer there are lots of community events – fetes, carnivals, festivals – and we just love them at Cromwell Vets. We attend events all over our region and run fun dog shows, have-a-go agility and gundog scurry (with our fabulous friends from St Ives Dog Training Club) and have lots of fun games and competitions. Not only does this give us the chance to meet you great people but also it also helps us raise lots of money for charity – something else we love. Every year or so we choose a new charity and raised thousands of pounds. So far we have saved a moon bear with “Animals Asia” (we still send money for his upkeep in the sanctuary), paid for the training of an assistance dog for “Hounds for Heroes”, sent a puppy off on their journey to become a “Medical Detection Dog” and provided much needed support for the network of “Cinnamon Trust” carers. So what’s in store next? Let us introduce you to StreetVet. Registered charity StreetVet is a multi-award winning RCVS registered practice delivering free care to the homeless and their pets. It was started by 2 vets with backpacks walking the
streets in London back in 2016. Since then the charity has expanded to have over 300 volunteers helping the homeless in eight cities around the country. Homelessness is an increasing problem in the UK and many homeless people find comfort in the companionship of their dogs. The bond between them is often very strong and the health and wellbeing of the dogs is a major priority for their owners. Now the charity’s ever increasing volunteers can help, by providing accessible fundamental vet care. The charity have vaccinated and microchipped; treated for fleas and protected against lungworm; prescribed pain relief and helped fight
infections; performed surgeries; and sometimes just sat and listened. The Cambridge branch of StreetVet was set up with the help of some our very own Cromwell vets, Amanda and Jo. Along with other volunteers from the area (including other Cromwell Vets colleagues) they can now provide much needed veterinary care on a regular basis for the dogs living on the streets of Cambridge with their owners. How you can help Come along to the community events and join in the fun! We have
seven (maybe eight) events lined up this summer and all our proceeds will go to StreetVet. Keep an eye on our Facebook for more information of where we’ll be and when. Hope to see you soon! Alternatively you can donate at any of surgeries, online on the StreetVet website (www.streetvet. co.uk) or you can purchase items from their “Amazon wishlist” via their website too. You will also help greatly by notifying the charity about a dog and owner in need of help.
FACEBOOK Cromwell Vets Facebook We’ll be posting all the information for the events we’ll be attending this year and look out for our great competitions too! We’ll also be following the progress of Sarah on her “Medal A Month For StreetVet” challenge. Sarah is one of our nurses and a regular volunteer with StreetVet Cambridge. So far she’s completed 50 miles running in January, completed a 10k and a half marathon; three months down, three medals earned! You can keep track of Sarah’s challenge on our Facebook page, where you can also find the link to sponsor her if you wish.

We had a dog attack sheep on our farm last year. I was alerted to it by a phone call from a neighbour who happened to be passing our field, and spotted a dog chasing down sheep and attempting to maul them.
We need to talk about
DOGS I was at the field within three minutes, but despite my best efforts, I was unable to catch the dog who ran on to the next sheep when I got close. And the next, and the next. At that point, I made the call that no-one wants to make and had someone bring their gun down to the field. That was one lucky dog, as the owner got to the field before the gun. He was apologetic, his dog was a ‘lovely, family dog’, he had lost sight of his dog for ‘only a moment’, and this behaviour was ‘so unusual for dear Harry’. The sheep too were lucky (if you can call it that) as the alertness of our neighbour and my immediate
presence meant that the sheep were shaken and cut but not badly injured. According to the organisation SheepWatch UK, 15,000 farm animals were killed by dogs in 2016. Further to this, a recent survey highlighted that just 39% of farmers reported all incidents to the police, so the figure is likely to be much higher. My message this month is a serious one: every dog - yes even your dear, beloved pooch - has it in them to be a killer. Please keep them on a lead at all times. Oh, and please clear up their mess wherever they leave it. You see, the second most horrific incident
/FarmerTomUK) @Farmer_Tom_UK
I have seen on our farm is a sheep affected by coenurosis (Gid). Coenurus cerebralis is the larval stage of Taenia Multiceps; a tapeworm that infests the small intestine of dogs. Contamination of pastures grazed by sheep with dog faeces can result in larval ultimately feasting on the poor sheep’s brain and central nervous system. The symptoms, and slow death, are extremely unpleasant. Please clear up after your dog, even on empty fields or footpaths, as who’s to say the farmer may not move sheep there just a few minutes after you pass. Do please also follow your vet’s advice regarding worming your pets.
As a Red Tractor farmer, their high standards demand that all farm dogs must be treated for worms and other parasites on a set, regular basis. We need your help in ensuring that disease and parasites are kept away from the livestock we care for. Our farm dog is a lovely dog; truly man’s best friend, but, much as I wouldn’t leave him alone with a small child, I’d never allow him to stray near sheep, and when he poops, I scoop!
So, whether you’re the pooper, or the scooper, have a fantastic April!

Being a loser makes Julie Pullan a winner! Being the best at losing wouldn’t normally help you to scoop an award - yet one woman from Yaxley has done just that after being named the town’s ‘Greatest Loser’ 2019. That’s because Julie has lost a lifechanging 5st 6.5lbs to take the title, which is awarded to the member of the Yaxley Slimming World group who has lost the most weight, and feels great as a result. Julie says: “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being a loser when it feels this good! I feel like a new woman since losing weight – in fact, I look so different that people who I haven’t seen for a while often can’t believe I’m the same person. For me though it’s the change on the inside that’s been the greatest – I’m happier, healthier and much more confident now.” Julie is a member of the Yaxley Wednesday group. Julie says: “My weight impacted on so many aspects of my life, from struggling to find clothes that I like to fit to not being able to do simple everyday tasks without feeling tired and out of breath.
Yasmin, who runs the Yaxley Wednesday Slimming World group, says: “The changes we’ve seen in Julie are incredible. I hope her success will inspire other people in Yaxley who’d like to lose weight. There’s a warm welcome waiting at any of our Yaxley Slimming World groups”.

Handwritten dedications, known as ‘back signs’, worn at Race for Life events.
This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life. There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place at Ferry Meadows on Sunday 30 June
Make a Date to Join The Race For Life Emily Rowling, Cancer Research UK’s Peterborough Event Manager, said: “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients in Peterborough access to the latest treatments”. “Our Race for Life events have been women-only since they started, over 25 years ago. But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone - women, men and children – has the chance to participate together.
The Race for Life is anything but a race. It’s your time to get together with friends and family and show cancer it won’t win. It’s not about being the fittest or the fastest, it’s about crossing the finish line any way you want. Let’s rally, raise money and beat cancer. Beating cancer doesn’t take gold medal-winning athletes. It takes someone much more important; you. Whether you take part because cancer has affected you or someone close to you, you’re motivated to beat it – and that’s all you need. We’re not athletes, we’re cancer beaters.

The main focus of our activity was on a small Island in Lake Kivu called Ishwa, where we were tasked with providing water filters and handwashing stations for the households of two of the four villages on the Island (more will follow as funding allows). Currently, the only water supplies on the island are either directly from the lake or from a couple of boreholes – all of which are contaminated and sources of infection. The water filters provide clean drinking water without the cost of firewood to boil the water and have been shown to dramatically reduce the rate of stomach infections in the community. In all, we gave training on health and hygiene,
and care of the water filters to 220 households, visiting a number of households afterwards to reinforce the use of the filters. Whilst on the mainland we also visited a church and village supported by St Peter’s Church Yaxley. After the church service, Sue and Carrie taught a group of about 60 teenage girls and young women about feminine hygiene, providing them with packs of reusable feminine hygiene materials. This is a significant issue for school age girls in rural Rwanda, who often can’t afford to buy menstrual products and who consequently often miss three or four days school every month. We also visited a new soccer project for

the young men of the locality. Proper footballs are expensive in Rwanda and they often play with homemade footballs. We were able to present each of the teams with a new football and pump, which were received very enthusiastically! When we visited in 2014, the Yaxley surgery and the Patients’ Association kindly donated the ultrasound machine which was due to be updated. Sue and I took the opportunity of visiting the clinic and maternity unit, where to our delight we discovered that the machine was still working perfectly. In fact, the midwife described to us how only three days before our visit the machine had saved the life of a
mother and unborn baby. Apparently, the mother turned up in early labour, not having had her antenatal appointments. She was scanned and found to have a problem where the placenta was covering the neck of the womb. This blocks the birth of the baby and often causes fatal bleeding during labour. The early discovery enabled her to be transferred to the nearest hospital where she had an emergency caesarean section. The director of MPUK and Bishop Nathan Amooti from South-West Rwanda will be joining us at St Peter’s on Sunday 19 May for the 11:00am service and all who are interested in the work in Rwanda are welcome to attend.
Monthly Closure Dates - The Practice will be closed on the Wednesday 17 April and 15 May 12.30pm and 4pm for staff training. Emergency No: 01733 240478.

to join a gym today towards their goal. That sense of being part of a like-minded community is very motivating. Socialising – Some of those people you nod and smile at in the gym will go on to become friends. The gym is an excellent place to hang out with people whose goals are aligned with yours. Uninterrupted workout routine – While your running or cycling routine might be interrupted by the weather, if you’re a gym member you can simply rock up there and exercise all year long. Professional guidance – Good gyms have well-trained professional staff who can instruct you how to use equipment safely and give advice about technique and nutrition. So, there’s no excuse. Pop along to your local gym today and start reaping the benefits of regular exercise.

Health benefits – Regular exercise has been proven to reduce your risk of cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease. It’s also been proven to increase your good blood cholesterol and improve mental health. Stronger mind – Exercise actually increases brain function. Because it improves the flow of blood to your brain it helps the brain remain healthy, increasing the ability to grow new nerve fibres and replace damaged ones, thus reducing your risk of Alzheimer’s. Weight management – Exercise helps to burn unwanted fat and increase muscle mass, helping you control your weight and maintain it at a healthy level. Motivation – Committing to a regular workout is not easy. And sometimes when we don’t get quick results, we tend to give up. At a gym you will see and meet people like you, slowly building
7 April each year marks the celebration of World Health Day. From its inception at the First Health Assembly in 1948 and Well done to the staff at the Chime cafe in Hampton, a customer had since taking effect in 1950, the celebration has aimed to create become unwell & they took the defibrillator as a precaution, reassured awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area and kept the customer calm until the emergency services came of concern for the World Health Organization. Progress is being made in countries in all regions of the world, but millions of people still have no access at all to health care. Millions more are forced to choose between health care and other daily expenses such as food, clothing and even a home. Over the past 50 years this has brought to light important health issues such as mental health, maternal and child care, and climate change. The celebration is marked by activities which extend beyond the day itself and serves as an
opportunity to focus worldwide attention on these important aspects of global health. This campaign aims to help people better understand what universal health coverage means – what services and support should be available and where. We will provide visual material that helps people who have access to quality, affordable health care to understand what life is like for people without it and to advocate for equal access to care, everywhere.

Well done to everyone who has donated towards these life saving defibrillators. We have some brilliant news for Yaxley, BGL has kindly donated £1300 towards a defibrillator. Although the location for this defibrillator has not been confirmed, we are hoping for it to
be installed in the Mere View Industrial Estate area and we should be able confirm location next month. We are very excited to be the charity partner of Yaxley FC and on 20 April Yaxley FC will be hosting an Easter egg hunt at 6.45pm followed by live entertainment with Soul Alliance at 8.30pm. East Anglian Air Ambulance Last October with a lot of help, we raised £1,021 for East Anglian Air Ambulance in Yaxley shopping centre. I am unable to hold further fund raising events due to mobility problems but am working behind the scenes for EEAA, with authority from the Community Fundraiser, Tammy Swiderski I would ask if anyone has items suitable for tombola or raffle (bottles, tins unwanted Christmas gifts, teddy bears etc) to drop them into D & A Sanders Pet Care Specialists, as David Sanders has very kindly agreed to act as a dropping off point for donated items and is conveniently located for most people. I will collect donated items from him and pass them on to EAAA. Additional funding of £1,000,000 is necessary to enable the air ambulance to provide a 24 hour service, which would save another 600 lives annually across the UK. No one thinks they will ever have to call upon this emergency service but if they do, time saving is critical. For further information regarding East Anglian Air Ambulance and its fundraising please contact community fundraiser Tammy Swiderski t: 07917 227066 or e: tammy.swiderski@eaaa.org.uk

What is Reiki?
By Louise Addison
Reiki is a form of complementary therapy commonly referred to as energy healing. It has been around for thousands of years but it’s current form was first developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist called Mikao Usui.
It is said to involve the transfer of universal energy from the practitioner’s palms to their patient. Some controversy surrounds Reiki, because it is hard to prove its effectiveness through scientific means. But many people believe it works. The word ‘Reiki’ means ‘mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign.’ It comes from the Japanese words ‘rei’ (universal) and ‘ki’ (life energy). The idea of Reiki is that is channels energy from the practitioner to target and work on the energy channels of the patient. According to practitioners, energy can stagnate in the body where there has been physical injury or emotional pain. If not released these these energy blocks can cause illness. By improving the flow of energy around the body, practitioners say they can enable relaxation, reduce pain, and speed healing. Reiki is held in a peaceful setting. The patient will remain fully clothed, and sit in a comfortable chair, or lie on a table. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or over specific areas of the head, limbs, and torso using different hand shapes, for between 2 and 5 minutes. The hands can be placed over 20 different areas of the body. If there is an active injury, the hands may be held just above the wound. The transfer of energy takes place while the hands are held over the patient. During this time, the practitioner’s hands may be warm and tingling. Each hand position is held
until the practitioner senses that the energy has stopped flowing. When the practitioner feels that the heat, or energy, in their hands has abated, they will remove their hands and place them over a different area of the body. Sessions can last 15-90 minutes. The number of sessions will vary, depending on what a client wishes to accomplish. According to practitioners, the healing effects are mediated by channeling the universal energy known as qi, pronounced ‘chi.’ It is the life force energy that some people believe surrounds all of us. Reiki experts say that while this energy is not measurable by modern scientific techniques, it can be felt by those who can tune in to it. Reiki is said to induce deep relaxation, help people cope with difficulties, relieve emotional stress, and improve overall wellbeing. People who love Reiki describe it as ‘intensely relaxing.’ Reiki is used to help treat many conditions including: cancer, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. Patients report feeling better after a session. Research from Cancer Research U.K. says that one reason could be that the therapist spends time with them and touches them. This is soothing for patients who may be overwhelmed by invasive therapy, fear, and stress. Individuals report different experiences. Some say that the practitioner’s hands become hot, others report cooling hands and some people feel pulsating waves. The most common reports are of a release.

Time to hang up on the telephone tricksters – don’t be fooled this April A recently-launched crackdown on scammers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is gathering pace with the aim of making the county scam-free.
Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which includes Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. CAPASP is committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal to online fraud, to telephone, romance and doorstep scams. Over the next few months, we will be looking in more detail at these scams and the warning signs which could prevent you from parting with your hard earned cash. So, telephone scams – potentially a lot more damaging and sophisticated than your average nuisance call about PPI, direct sales call or automated offer. Here is an at-a-glance guide to the types of scam calls, and some tell-tale signs which can help us hang up on the fraudsters.
Vishing - A telephone call is used in an attempt to steal personal information. SMShing - An SMS text message is used in an attempt to steal personal Yaxley Methodist Chapel 01733 314147 information. Reverend Gareth Baron – Main Street Investment or ‘Boiler Room’ Scam - A telephone call offers worthless, Reverend Gordon Limbrick 01733 243170 overpriced or non-existent shares. revgordonlimbrick@gmail.com Pension Scam - Designed to lure St Peter’s Church people to cash in their pension with lauraashley@saintpeters.co.uk 07939 449 255 promises of upfront cash, guaranteed returns and one-off deals. From the 9th Yaxley Amateur Players Youth Section 01487 832131 January 2019, it is illegal for genuine akrills@btinternet.com pension companies to cold-call. PC, laptop or tablet has been infected with malware (or a computer virus), and that they can help you solve the problem. The scammer will attempt to confuse you with jargon or ask you to open common Microsoft utilities and services that list what may appear to be problems with your computer.
Stay safe: NEVER give out any bank / financial / personal information over the phone. A scammer will try and persuade you on the phone to hand over your bank card to a courier or taxi driver and they often say they’re from your bank or the police. They may ask you to give them your card and PIN, set up a ‘safe’ account, or buy expensive goods like watches or mobile devices and hand these over to them. Fraudsters can sound extremely professional and will do all they can to convince you that their call is genuine. ALWAYS be wary of any unsolicited phone calls, especially when they ask for your personal or financial details, hang up and report ANYTHING suspicious. Your bank or the police will NEVER: Ask you to transfer money to a new account for fraud reasons, even if they say it is in your name. Phone you to ask for your 4-digit card PIN or your online banking password, even by tapping them into the telephone keypad. Ask you to withdraw money to hand over to them for safe-keeping. Send someone to your home to collect your cash, PIN, payment card or cheque book if you are a victim of fraud. Ask you to purchase goods using your card and then hand them over for safe-keeping.
If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it. To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, visit www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk
