Important patient announcement Dr. Richard Withers, Senior Partner, Mrs. Aija Selby, Practice Manager

From 1 January, the partners of Yaxley Group Practice and Lakeside Healthcare Group are delighted to announce that they will be working together as a single ‘GP Super-Practice’ to supply NHS services to the patients of Yaxley and surrounding villages.

I

t is important to note that we remain a traditional GP partnership, upholding all the values of traditional family doctor services, only bigger. This is very exciting news for all patients and staff as it ensures sustainability and continuity of NHS service provision in our region, as well as terrific opportunities for future growth. One of the key things that it is important for us to stress to you, our patients, is that this joining-up of practices is an opportunity to build something bigger, better and more effective for the people we see, treat and serve. It is a hugely positive move for us all and puts us all in a very strong position for the years to come. We would like to reassure patients that you will still be able to access services, staff and clinics in the same way that you have become accustomed to in recent years. There are no plans to move patients or staff or to introduce materially different working practices and obviously patients will still be registered at their own practice. This proposed merger will give us the opportunity to deliver truly excellent healthcare services to across a broader geography. We will do this by taking the very best things that we do individually and gradually introduce those ideas to the expanded organisation. In this way we shall all benefit: • our patients, from a high quality, consistent service that is safe and effective; • our staff, from being part of a bigger organisation that shall be more financially sustainable and able to offer greater training and

employment opportunities; • our commissioners (those who buy our services on behalf of patients), from the wider range of services that can be provided more cost-effectively out of hospital. You will have read in the national press over recent months that the NHS is facing a lean and challenging financial future. Health economies across the NHS have to think about how money can be saved and in many instances they are contemplating cutting services and jobs and closing practices. It is this that we intend to avoid by this merger. Our future is largely down to us - what we do and how we do it, but with the key goal of preserving and enhancing great care to our patients. We believe we can develop a different, better solution by becoming bigger. Our solution is to expand GP primary care services and to be able to see and treat more patients in a community setting. Being bigger will allow us to do a number of things: • Offer a greater range of services, including more minor surgical services and outpatient services and offer a different service to the very many patients we have with multiple long term conditions. • Partner our local hospitals as equals and develop care packages that relieve much of the growing pressure on hospitals. • Allow us to win more contracts to provide different services, thereby increasing our collective revenues which in turn will allow us to invest more in people, premises and equipment.

If you have any questions at all please contact us and we shall be happy to discuss this exciting next stage of development for primary care services in our expanded region.

BLOG

I spend a lot of time online. I like the fact that I can talk to people without the crushing inconvenience of talking to people and, if I can’t be bothered to respond, just wait a few days until I can then say I was driving through a tunnel and had no signal.

I

t does seem however, that a lot of people can’t really do online – people really do share some appalling things on the internet and over social media. So this month, I have decided to use my blog to help you find the right social media platform for you. If you’re the kind of person who is either a teenager or old, and you like to share massively regrettable things with everyone you’ve ever met, then Facebook is for you. It’s a nice easy place to look at pictures of other people’s dogs, complain about people setting off fireworks in June and make poor life choices. If you don’t have too much to say but like to pretend you have some sort of connection with celebrities, then Twitter is the place to be. Don’t be put off by the Donald Trump thing, it’s a great place to make seemingly innocuous comments that go viral for thousands of people to be offended by. If you like looking at pictures of other people’s food and glasses of wine, definitely head over to

Instagram. Its great because you don’t have to talk anyone while you’re snooping on what food their cat might be sitting next to. If you’ve always wondered what you’d look like if you had a face like a dog or suddenly had a really tiny head – congratulations you’ve discovered Snapchat! Do you like pretending work isn’t boring? You do? Boom! LinkedIn. Tinder…yeah, you don’t need to go on that. If you have no creativity of your own but like to look at wedding cakes covered in handmade jewellery and applique tea cosies, then you should be heading over to Pinterest, a site where you don’t even have to talk to anyone to enjoy what you find. Hopefully this guide is useful to you and your journeys online, but take with you this one piece of advice – if you think to yourself ‘I should post that on Facebook’, its almost certainly the type of thing you should definitely not be posting on Facebook.

“Even though February was the shortest month of the year, sometimes it seemed like the longest.” J.D. Robb

I take no issue with February being the shortest month; we often have the coldest, wettest, darkest days, and there’s many a time when I can’t wait for the spring. That said, there can be beautiful, fresh, bracing days too, and the first spring flowers are already in full bloom, so there is joy amongst the hardship.

W

e’ve been feeding the overwintering birds since midDecember now; research has shown that giving some extra help through the days when food is scarcest is – along with predator control – the most effective way of ensuring our most vulnerable bird population stabilises and grows. Our hedgerows are now devoid of fruit (and so we’ll use this month to give half of them their biannual trim) and clouds of birds can now be found on our speciallyplanted overwintering bird areas. It’s great that the government support this activity as, although it doesn’t make us a profit, it’s a rewarding part of my role as a steward of the countryside. A recent study by DEFRA showed that farmland bird numbers can increase by anything from 19% to nearly 100% in just six years if some simple measures are taken. I hope the government continues to see the value in this. Aside from hedge cutting and bird feeding, we’ll be ensuring the land is ready for the planting of spring crops in March and April, and starting to give the sheep a little supplementary feed this month as the grassland is at

its poorest, and an extra provision of energy and key nutrients really helps them. Many farmers will be starting the busy weeks of lambing meaning they’ll be up through the nights ensuring the lambs all arrive successfully! In January, we took our tractor in to a local school as part of National Breakfast Week, and, in one of a series of events run by the East of England Agricultural Society, we met with children and teachers, and made sausages, and pancakes, and discovered how the food which they have for breakfast is grown and prepared. Next month, on March Sunday 11th March, I’ll be helping with ‘Lambing Day’, at Morborne, where you’ll be able to come along and, as well as sit in a tractor, hold a one-day-old chick, scratch a pig, and raise money for charity, you’ll (almost certainly) be able to watch lambs being born! Put it in your diary! Don’t forget to look out this month for wonderful, seasonal, fresh, British leek, rhubarb, cabbage, purple sprouting broccoli, venison, parsnips, and kale, and thanks for supporting British farmers by buying British, seasonal food! Bring on the spring…

The legion invites the nation to say ‘thank you’

Childhood depression is a reality According to research, almost one in four young people will experience depression before the age of 19, with a quarter of girls and nearly one in 10 boys showing signs of depression at 14. Moodiness in teenagers can be normal, but if they are withdrawing and seem disconnected from their friends too, it could be a sign of something more serious. Depression affects people in different ways, but symptoms can include: • not wanting to do things that they previously enjoyed • eating or sleeping more, or less, than normal • feeling irritable, upset, or lonely • being self-critical and feeling hopeless Just because your child may be experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it doesn’t mean they’re definitely affected by depression, but if you are concerned, make an appointment with them to see your GP to get a full diagnosis. How are you supposed to know how your child is feeling? Try to watch out for clues. Common triggers could be an upset; such as falling out with an important friend or not doing as well in something as they’d hoped. These events may not seem a big deal to you, but they may be major for your child. Acknowledging they’re upset by listening and talking is really important. Sometimes planting the seed that you’ve noticed they’re not happy and are ready to talk when they are can set the ball rolling. If your child doesn't want to talk to you, encourage them to talk to someone else they trust. Most importantly, listen to your instincts. If a voice is telling you something is wrong then don’t be afraid to seek help. Yaxley Parish Council

The Legion is launching a movement to say ‘thank you’ to a generation who shaped our society. Activities will take place in the last 100 days from 8 August – 11 November. To mark the final year of the World War One centenary, The Royal British Legion is inviting the public to take part in a movement to say ‘Thank You’ to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world. The charity is calling on the nation to remember not only the 1.2 million British and Commonwealth Armed Forces who lost their lives, but also those - military and civilian - who played their part on the home front and those who returned to build a better life for the benefit of generations to come. During the last 100 days of the centenary from 8 August to 11 November, the Legion is inviting the British public from all cultures and faiths, community groups, schools, companies and sports clubs to join the movement to express their gratitude to those who gave themselves to the war and its aftermath, and rebuilt a better nation from its darkest hour. The Legion’s Director General, Charles Byrne said: ‘The end of the First World War centenary is a chance for each of us to say thank you in our own ways and in our own words not only to those who gave their lives, but those who returned, those who worked in the factories and on the land, and those who pioneered advances in medicine, technology and the arts in response to the experience of the war. ‘Whilst the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the fighting 100 years ago marks a poignant time of reflection, it is also a time to look forward to the future with the promise to make it a better place. Everyone living in Britain today has a reason to say ‘thank you’ to this special generation.’ The Legion is asking the nation to plan their ‘thank you’ activity to take place from the 8 August onwards, while the first day of daylight savings – itself an outcome of the First World War – will be a focus for ‘thank you’ activity on Sunday 28 October. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue On-call firefighters are a vital part of today’s fire and rescue service, providing an efficient, effective service that gives emergency cover to more than 90 per cent of the UK. In Cambridgeshire they make up 56 per cent of the workforce. An on-call firefighter is not based at a fire station but carries a pager and responds to emergency incidents as and when they happen. They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit to being available, plus additional payments for attending incidents and drill nights (one evening a week for two hours). On-call firefighters are men and women who may have other jobs and are able to provide evening, daytime, or weekend cover. When they are on-call they may be at home, working for themselves or for a nearby company, or out in their local community within our 5 minute radius of the station itself. Our on-call Firefighters are mainly located in rural communities, small towns and villages, and we will be able to tell you if you are within range to apply to be an on-call firefighter.

February fun for everyone This February half term Vivacity has got it covered. With a range of fantastic holiday activities all the family can enjoy and Vivacity’s fun-filled childcare solutions there’s lots to keep the kids entertained during the school break.

V

ivacity’s sports holiday club, powered by Club Viva, is at four locations across Peterborough; Hampton Leisure Centre, Werrington Leisure Centre, Jack Hunt Pool & Gym and Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre. Each day is jam-packed with exciting activities and is uniquely themed. From Lego to Around the World days, there is truly something for all the children to enjoy keeping them entertained and having fun all day, every day. Here’s what some of the kids have to say: “Oh I love it here because everyday everyone makes me happy. The teachers and my friends are all so funny they always make me laugh. I definitely want to come back” Leon 7 “I love when the bouncy castles are out, I love going outside

and I love lunchtime, definitely lunchtime” Jamie 8 “I’ve made a lot of new friends coming here and my favourite part of the whole day was in gymnastics when I got to do flips on Amar [the instructor]” Olivia 5 It’s not just the kids that love Vivacity’s sports holiday club, parents are benefiting too; “When I found out that Vivacity’s sports holiday club goes up to age 13 I was so relieved because it’s quite hard to find childcare for children aged 11+… because of the staff I feel extremely comfortable leaving him, their communication with parents is excellent and I can’t fault them.” Nicola Stevens (Parent) If it’s not childcare you’re after this February half term then check out Vivacity’s family activity at

the Peterborough Museum and become a Secret Agent. Work as a team to find the hidden clues, decode messages and identify friend from foe before it’s too late. Vivacity’s Museum events have been proving a hit with parents and kids alike. “I love that there is something for different age groups and that it’s really interactive. The staff are brilliant. Fantastic!” Cathey Notts-Clark, 39 And there’s more ... Sayeh Stone, author of the acclaimed children’s

book ‘Shaped Animals’ will be visiting selected Vivacity libraries reading her books and getting both you and the kids creative, by helping you make your very own shaped animals.

Yaxley Yaks

Chairman’s update The Club spent the last weekend before breaking up for Christmas celebrating with a tournament which joined families together for a festive fun competition.

C

hairman James Warrener told club sponsor RLFans.com “Our core values as a club have been family, fitness & fun, and we were keen to apply that to our Winter Family Festival.” “As a player, the chance to line up with my 6 year old daughter in the same team is something quite special. All of the kids in our club run their little legs of each and every weekend and it’s a real inspiration. The support from RLFans has helped us book a 3g pitch for the winter and enter competitions. I took up rugby at the age of 42 and was part of the group who founded the club soon. We have had a brilliant first year having played in three tournaments promoting six tackle rugby. We are now affiliated with the England Touch Federation and have sent

players to age group trials. We would love to have an international to tell you about in the future, or a Super League player. In our ranks there are Catalans, Wigan and Leeds fans. Our juniors have trained weekly all year and managed a massive upset win over Peterborough Rugby during the summer. The senior competition at Peterborough ran over four Friday nights in the summer, and we took on the running and promotion of the event. It caused plenty of grey hairs but lots of fun and competitive rugby was played. If you are in the East Midlands, please get in touch as we would love to expand that competition in the coming years. What pleased me as a Chairman the most was the enthusiasm the local teams have for

the event and the fact that the rules of the game allow all ages and sexes to play the game together with a smile on their faces. As part of our social scene we enjoyed the world cup final in our hosts Yaxley FC’s club house. Such was the keenness of some of our players, they trained before the match and went out again at half time. That sums up the spirit of the Yaks.” The club is planning for more tournaments next season along with a trip to Magic Weekend in Newcastle. “It’s important we keep moving forward and looking to develop a competitive edge whilst preserving our core values. We want to win matches and keep everyone having fun and that’s a tricky balance”

You can learn more about the club via http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/yaxleyyaks and search them out on Facebook and Twitter.

Yaxley businesses get behind Grassroots sport Three Yaxley-based businesses have proved their commitment to the community and helped support the growth of ICA Sports Football Club in the village, by supporting the purchase of new kit for three teams.

W

ith generous financial support from TGA Haulage, Smart Move and Inbox has allowed three new teams to be created in Yaxley, filling the void of organised youth football in the village. TGA Haulage have provided the new Under-11 Napoli team with playing kit, sweaters & player match day bags. The Under-11 Napoli team play league games on Sunday mornings, with home games being played at Queens Park on Daimler Avenue. Yaxley based Estate Agent, Smart Move have sponsored a brand-new playing kit for the Under-8 Fiorentina team. The Under-8 Fiorentina team play league games on Saturday mornings, with home games being played at Queens Park on Daimler Avenue. Village based self-storage providers Inbox Storage have kindly provided new playing kit for the U9 Fiorentina. Full details about the opportunities ICA Sports provide for young people to play football in the village can be found at www.icasports.com

Bowls Club

Would you like to be involved in the bowls club? The nights are starting to draw out, the grass is growing and as always the bowls green looks superb! We all can’t wait to be playing again. Bowlers old and new take note - the green will be open on Friday 13 April - with a our first friendly club game, the President’s team v Captain’s team on Saturday 21 April, which always proves to be a fun day. Over the winter break our social committee works hard to organise entertaining events like quizzes, race nights, parties and drives. Not only does this keep people in touch, it also raises valuable funds for the club, so try and support these events if you can. Our membership was down in 2017, so in 2018 we will be trying hard to recruit new members. Young and old can enjoy the pleasures, companionship and, in some cases, competitiveness that bowls offers. We offer a warm welcome to any new members, so if you are interested in joining us, please phone our club secretary Kathy Browning (01733 241967), for a chat about how to become involved. Getting together as a club to celebrate success is always a good way to begin a new year and motivate members for the start of the season ahead. This year we will be holding our 2017 dinner and presentation night, at The Farmers, Broadway, on Friday 2 March, 6:30pm for 7pm. Tickets will be available soon. We welcome our new club president for 2018, Mr. Ray Bass, Ray has long been captain of our weekend team the Yaxley Seals. We wish him every success in his presidency for the year ahead.

enjoy the day/weekend. Families and “non-fans” can go and have an enjoyable day, enjoying varied activities, meeting celebrities & other likeminded people. Everyone is so friendly & approachable. You don’t always get the same “stars” or things to do, which only adds to the uniqueness of each Con. You will always find props from films and TV shows; usually ones that have been on high profile popular ones like the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones, as well as cars like the Delorean from Back To The Future. There is always something different. There are artists and stalls, all varied in their wares, that will always have something for someone. Plus, you can get a personal drawing done too! There is always a fantastic atmosphere and a real buzz around the event, generated by people who ‘dress up in costumes’; this is called Cosplay. You can find all the Comic Cons on Facebook & Twitter. I would highly recommend checking them all out!

Winter is ending February traditionally counts as the last month of winter, the time for pruning roses, buddleias and similar shrubs before the sap rises in spring.

I

t is also the time of year when much work starts in earnest in the vegetable patch with digging over of beds for planting, the sowing of parsnips, a last chance to plant garlic and the sowing in warmth of many other vegetables and bedding plants. It is the time of year when robins will often perch on a fork, whilst gardeners take a break from digging, peering with eagle eyes for any worms disturbed by turning the soil. The cold means it is still a time of great vulnerability for hibernating

bugs and of course for those dug up to the surface by gardeners. It is tempting to start clearing away piles of dead leaves and vegetation but this is something that should really be avoided until the weather has warmed up to protect the delicate bugs through the last of the cold snap. Similarly now is not a good time to start moving slabs, rockery rocks and similar especially in Peterborough where the lifting is quite likely to expose amphibians such as newts as well as bugs to the cold weather.

Finally, in December this article mentioned leaving out a jar of honey to feed the bees. It should be emphasised that caution needs to be taken in positioning the jar as should it fill with water or be of still liquid honey there is a real danger

that bees will become stuck and drown. So put the jar on its side or place a small quantity of honey on a saucer. Make sure it is local honey otherwise you run the risk of bringing in diseases. Bee keepers often feed with a sugar solution as an alternative.

localhistory

Local historian’s efforts allow residents to own a remarkable piece of history Thanks to the efforts of local historian Roy Butters, residents can now own a remarkable piece of Yaxley’s history in the form of the 1827 map of Yaxley Town, Enclosures and Fen.

T

he map has been carefully copied from an original document in private ownership, digitally cleaned and repaired by Annette of Far-Away Art Print Services of Yaxley. The map features many points of interest, not least of which is the site of the musket shooting range, which has been the focus of Roy’s recent research (more on that soon). Keen eyes will also spot the New Inn at Norman Cross, the Norman Cross Toll Bar, village lock-up and the water course that followed east Main Street (then Town

Street). Also featured is Trundle Mere, the drained fishery of the Earl of Carysfort and the reed beds that lined the banks of the great Whittlesea Mere. The map provides a fantastic snapshot of Yaxley at a time after the closure of the Norman Cross prisoner-of-war-depot and prior to William Wells’ incredible drainage scheme. This is an age before the railway transformed local industry and the great expanse of the Whittlesea Mere was a haven for entomologists, botanists and boaters.

1827 was a year of note. The industrial revolution was transforming the economy and despite victory in the Napoleonic Wars, the British Empire and British-allied African states were still engaged in conflict, this time with the Ashanti Empire, battling for control over the coastal areas of what is now Ghana. 1827 was also the year that the world lost two visionaries in the form of Ludwig van Beethoven and William Blake, whose artistic trajectories in some small way intersected with events that shaped the parish of Yaxley.

One can imagine Beethoven furiously scribbling out the dedication to Napoleon on the manuscript of his third ‘heroic’ symphony as French soldiers trudged along the turnpike to the Yaxley barracks. Or perhaps Blake chastising the destruction of a way of life in the poem ‘And did those feet in ancient time’, whose dark satanic mills are often linked to the fate of the Albion Flour Mills and John Rennie, who published plans that included the drainage of Holme and Yaxley Fen.

The map can be printed on canvas and ordered from Far-Away Art Print Services. Visit their website at www.far-awayart.co.uk or call 01733 247461 for more information. Copies can be ordered in a range of sizes and formats. Yaxley Gazette | February 2018 | T: 01733 757342 | E: info@yaxleygazette.co.uk | www.yaxleygazette.co.uk

Yaxley Infants

Happy New Year from Yaxley Infant School Yaxley Infant school are looking forward to another exciting year in 2018! Reception children are now well underway in their topic “Dinosaurs”. Teachers follow the children’s interest and in the Autumn term during circle times they asked all the children what they wanted to learn about. Many of the boys and girls showed particular interests in Dinosaurs. Teachers have worked incredibly hard to give children first hand experiences! Children have been palaeontologists this term, digging up and studying bones and writing about dinosaurs. Year 1 children are engrossed in their topic “Food, Food Glorious Food“. As part of their topic they have completed food tasting and a cultural week looking at different foods from around the world. Children have also made their own food leaflets using their senses, to describe a food from the main food groups. Year 2 started the term with a mysterious visitor who had a tea party, left paw prints and ate all the biscuits!!! Can you guess who it was? Later in the term they learnt about food chains and wrote some fantastic stories.

Before we move firmly away from 2017 and focus our attention on all that 2018 has to offer, we must say a huge thank you to our wonderful Friends of Fourfields who worked their socks off to provide us with an amazing Christmas Fayre! They raised the fantastic amount of £2500 which will go a very long way to providing the children with more play equipment. We are so grateful to all you do for us! Keep an eye out for some new outdoor equipment Friends of Yaxley Infant School have being installed in the also been very busy raising funds for coming months! our Outdoor classroom. Our Christmas We were extremely privileged Fayre was an amazing success and the to have the visit of England kitchen staff also provided hotdogs, International netballer, Sasha Corbin. biscuits and hot drinks. In total they Sasha spent the afternoon coaching raised over £1000 pounds and are the netball team in Year 5 and 6 now hard at work to raise even more before moving on to the netball club money! We would like to say a special after school. It was an extremely thank you to local businesses for their inspiring visit, not only for the kind donations to the raffle. The Friends children but for our netball mad staff are hoping to build on this success later and parents who also paid a visit! in the year so keep an eye open for future fundraising events. If your child is due to start school in September this year and you would like to visit us please contact us on (01733 240918) or email us office@ yaxley.cambs.sch.uk we look forward to meeting you and your child.

Stretton Preschool

The staff and children at Stretton Preschool would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. The children have returned full of energy, ready to start the new term. January has been a busy month and we have really enjoyed getting to know our new starters and their families. It's lovely to see new friendships forming. We have lots of exciting things planned for the upcoming month and hope parents will enjoy our recently new feature of the online journal, which allows preschool to share photos and children's development but also gives parents the opportunity to add photos, news and comments themselves. The committee are planning a cake sale this month and can also announce that we raised an amazing £1437 at our Christmas fundraiser, so once again, thank you to all our families, staff, and the community for supporting our preschool.

Folksworth

Farcet C of E Primary School After welcoming our pupils back after the Christmas break, we had a wonderful start to the 2018 with a visit from the Life Education Centre. All classes took part in sessions which taught them how amazing their bodies are and how the human body can be affected by drugs. Our children found the experience very exciting and we hope that they now have the knowledge, skills and selfconfidence to enable them to make healthy choices. We have many more interesting learning experiences planned for the rest of the term and are looking forward to another term of learning together.

20

Folksworth takes off! We firmly believe in encouraging our children to ‘aim high’ and our recent trip certainly did that! What could be more ‘out-of-this-world’ than a visit to the National Space Centre? The children were wonderfully inspired – they saw a rocket in the rocket tower, got a chance to give a weather report in the weather pod, and thoroughly explored all of the exhibits.

However, for any budding astronauts amongst the party, the best was yet to come. Not only did we learn all about what it takes to become an astronaut, but we could have our photo taken with Tim Peake (albeit the cardboard one!). It may have been one short trip, but it was one giant quest for keen minds.

William De Yaxley

January has been a month of looking back to our past with the help of ‘History off the Page’. A Viking village nestled in the school hall and the Year 5 children experienced a whole range of activities including weaving, pottery, candle making, ink work, rune making and even battle formations and how to fight like true Viking warriors. In the afternoon the pupils returned to the Viking village, but now in the present day as an archaeological site. They investigated this by brushing through dig boxes, exploring what objects were buried and who might have lived there. Some groups uncovered bones, pottery, keys and wooden objects providing clues as to the village inhabitants and their job. Having survived the Viking invasion, the following week the Romans invaded our school. Our Year 4 Pupils had a fantastic Roman Day, learning about their lives, food and drink, where they conquered and how they shaped the world we live in today. This ‘hands-on’ experience included pottery making, decorations, writing

with feather quills and experiencing the formations of Roman soldiers preparing for battle! The day ended with a Roman feast including grapes, cheese and wine…well juice! All of the resources really helped add to the authentic feeling of both days, from the shields and banners to decorations and pottery, we would like to say a huge thank you to "History off the Page" for providing such an incredible day, our parents for some inspired costumes and to those parents and everyone else involved in making this day happen! The knowledge gained from these experiences really helps history to come to life and to engage the children in their learning. Looking forward, Year 3 will be travelling further back in time to discover the wonders of Ancient Egypt; and we will be once again taking up the Bishop Stephen Lent Challenge, so watch this space for more information.

Simple steps to get your finances in order – professionally and hassle-free

There aren’t many of us who particularly enjoy talking about financial planning (unless of course it’s our chosen career path!) – and perhaps even less of us who fully understand the many courses of action available.

F

inancial Planning is an ongoing process to help us make sensible decisions about money that can ultimately help us achieve our goals in life It’s not just about buying products like a pension or an ISA. There are many decisions which we have to make during the course of our lives, and at significant life stages, that means carefully planning our cash. There’s choosing the right mortgage; saving or investing for our family, and protecting them in the event of the unexpected, and let’s not forget about planning for later life and retirement. There is also the legal side to consider. It may be a surprise to know that – according to research – only one in four people aged 55 and over do not have a Will, a legal document which determines who receives your assets and estate when you die. And while many of us don’t feel comfortable about talking openly on the subject of Wills – or Lasting Power of Attorney – a greater understanding of the process and banishing the taboo could prevent your affairs being left in the hands of strangers when you die.

Will making is certainly not just a thought that should be reserved for the older generation. In fact, making a Will or an LPA while younger, healthy and of sound mind can allow you to get your finances in order and continue to enjoy your life – knowing that things will be taken care of when you are not long able to or have the mental capacity to do so. Other important topics can include; wealth preservation, inheritance tax and planning/ paying for your funeral. So with all this to think about – as well as constant changes in legislation – where is your first port of call for advice and help? As the sister company of the highly successful and respected Safe Local Trades, the relatively new and fast growing Safe Local Services has members who are experts in all these financial fields; each offering a professional and friendly service to customers in and around the PE postcode area.

Keeping our pets moving this winter

pawsforthought

This is the time of year when many people think about starting a new exercise regime. Exercise can have more benefits than just the weight loss we seek after our festive over-indulgences, exercise helps our muscles and joints too.

T

his is one of the many principles physiotherapy works with – if muscles and joints are flexible and strong they are healthier, less prone to injury and most importantly less painful. A form of physiotherapy has been used on people for centuries but it wasn’t until around 35 years ago that the principles started to be applied to our pets. After all, animals are essentially made up of the same things we are, their bodies prone to problems and their joints susceptible to degeneration just like us. As physiotherapy exercise programs help people, it can also help our ailing pets. A huge range of conditions can be treated with physiotherapy and this time of year it’s the older pets who can really see the benefits.

The New Year brings with it colder weather and this often makes life for those with arthritis more difficult as their joints become more painful and stiff. You may have noticed your older pet is sleeping more, maybe less willing to move around the house, perhaps slower walking. The key for arthritis sufferers is to exercise little and often – enough to keep the blood pumping and joint fluid flowing to help ease joint stiffness, but not too much to cause joint inflammation and pain. An animal physiotherapist can guide you how you can do this safely for your pet and during sessions, they can also address pain levels and offer bespoke treatments to help your arthritic pet. Arthritis isn’t the only condition

physiotherapy can help with, others include: post-operatively (such as after a cruciate ligament or fracture repair), neurological conditions (such as Wobbler’s), intervertebral disc disease (or ‘slipped disc’) and muscle and soft tissue injuries (common in sporting dogs).

We have some exciting news! With many animals seeing the benefits of physiotherapy over the last 4 years at Cromwell Vets, we’re really excited to be able to expand our service with the Cromwell Animal Rehabilitation Centre (ARC). In our brand new purpose-built centre at our Sawtry surgery, we will not only be offering physiotherapy but also hydrotherapy, k-laser treatment and acupuncture.

For more information, please speak to Cromwell Vets or call 01487 800199. As always and throughout the festive season, our Veterinary team are available 24/7 at our Huntingdon Hospital. 24hr Emergency Service: 01480 52222

General Data Protection Regulation From 25 May 2018, any business that stores the personal data of staff, customers, suppliers and other business contacts will need to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). GDPR affects everyone, businesses and individuals alike, so knowing as much as you can about this new EU regulation now and preparing for its impact now will help you be compliant and avoid a huge potential fine in the future. GDPR exists to give people better control over what businesses and organisations can do with their data. It also makes data protection laws identical across all EU countries, making things clearer and simpler for everyone, seeks to systemise and unify data privacy laws across all EU member countries. Currently, in the UK, the handling of data is governed by the 1998 Data Protection Act. GDPR will supersede the Data Protection Act, introducing new rules and penalties for those who fail to adhere to them, but more on that later. Right now. GDPR first came into force on 24th May 2016, though at present GDPR is a regulation and not a directive, meaning companies have until 25th May 2018 until the regulation becomes law and will apply to them. Having said that, it’s essential to start preparing for its arrival now while you still have some room. GDPR applies to “controllers” and “processors” of data, which covers just about every organisation out there as most organisations handle people’s personal data at some point, whether it’s the data of customers, suppliers, the public or staff. The most important question of all - it’s all well and good knowing what GDPR is and why it’s here, but how are we supposed to comply with it? One key point to make note of in terms of collecting people’s data is that you must always ask for their explicit and informed consent to give it and do so in a very timely, clear and obvious way so that they fully understand what you are collecting, why and what you intend to do with it thereafter. You can no longer rely on automatic, assumed or inferred consent e.g. where a box on a website form is already ticked for instance. Instead, the person has to tick the box to agree to your Terms and Conditions for instance.

We have discontinued showing dates to remember, but they are still available on our website at www.birdandco.ltd/News

We specialise in sole traders, partnerships, small limited companies and all types of self-employed businesses, as well as all aspects of accountancy and taxation concentrating on the personal approach. Speak to Pete any time, for a free initial chat.

Delicious gluten-free recipes to tickle everyone’s taste buds! In recent years supermarkets have recognised the demand for gluten-free alternatives, and the majority now carry their own ‘free-from’ ranges. However, whilst undoubtedly representing choice for the consumer, these vacuum-

packed products are often a poor substitute for home-baking (despite their hefty price tag!). It’s therefore well worth making your own: not only is gluten-free flour as easy to use as wheat flour, you tell the difference between the end results!

Chocolate Fudge Traybake Ingredients 250g butter, melted then cooled for 5 mins 300g caster sugar 3 eggs 200g Dove’s Farm Gluten-Free SelfRaising Flour 50g cocoa powder 100g chocolate drops

Topping: 85g butter 85g caster sugar 200g light condensed milk 50g chocolate drops (plus some for decoration

Method 1. Preheat oven to Gas 4/180°/160° Fan 2. Grease and line a 20 x 30cm tin 3. Beat together eggs, sugar and melted butter until smooth. 4. Fold in the sifted flour, cocoa and a pinch of salt. 5. Fold in the chocolate drops and bake for 35 minutes. Cool on a rack.

6. For the topping, melt the additional sugar and butter, stir in the condensed milk and bring to the boil. Cool for 5 minutes before stirring in the chocolate drops and spreading over the cake.

Basic Shortcrust Pastry This pastry is easy to work with, although it tends to stay quite pale: if you prefer more colour, brush with a little beaten egg prior to baking. Ingredients 200g Dove's Farm Gluten-Free Plain Flour 100g block margarine 1 egg, beaten 1-2 tsp water

Can you taste the difference?

www.birdandco.ltd

Method 1. Use a food processor to blitz the flour and diced margarine to the breadcrumb stage. 2. Add the beaten egg and 1 teaspoon water; process briefly until it forms a dough. 3. If it needs another teaspoon of water to bind, add that and process again.

4. Turn onto a floured surface (gluten-free!) and knead lightly. 5. Wrap in clingfilm and leave to rest for about 20 minutes before using in quiches, tarts, pies, etc. For a sweet pastry, sift a little icing sugar in with the flour.

Meet the new super mineral: magnesium by Ginny Forest If you are anything like me then the topic of health can sometimes send your mind into a slight over spin (only because I love it!).

O

n a daily basis we hear the good, the bad and the ugly about almost everything we consume, whether this is through various media channels, friendly gossip or supermarket food packets. This summer give your system a spring clean. Ditch the processed foods, caffeine and carbonated drinks and reap the benefits of one super mineral; magnesium. Statistics have shown that not nearly enough of us are consuming the recommended daily allowance which can be the cause of so many of those ‘under the weather’ days. If you commonly suffer from muscle cramps, poor sleep, migraines and anxiety to name just a few read on… Magnesium is an essential mineral required by the body for maintaining normal muscle and nerve function, keeping a healthy immune system,

maintaining heart rhythm, and building strong bones. Many of the common food and drinks we love to consume are having adverse effects on our intake of magnesium. These are flushing magnesium out of our body and therefore causing us to become deficient. Try incorporating our top 10 magnesium super foods into your diet and monitor your progress… q Dark leafy greens (spinach) w Nuts and seeds (pumpkin seeds, almonds and brazil nuts) e Fish (mackerel) r Beans and lentil (soya beans) t Whole grains (brown rice, wholemeal bread) y Avocados u Low fat dairy (plain low fat yoghurt) i Bananas o Dried fruit (figs) a Dark chocolate

For fast results discover the gel and oil forms of magnesium which topically allow the magnesium to become rapidly absorbed into the skin, encouraging the cells in the body to detoxify and cleanse themselves. If you regularly suffer from joint pain, stiffness or old sports injuries try either of these products as they will vastly improve these issues. Additionally try taking magnesium citrate which can be found in most good local health food shops as it is also a good form for being absorbed by the body. Avoid taking directly after food as this neutralises stomach acidity similarly avoid taking the supplement with caffeine as this inhibits the absorption of magnesium.
