community Barry’s Heartbeat In 2012 whilst out walking my husband, Barry, suffered a heart attack and passed away. It was discovered that his heart attack was caused by high blood pressure. He was 50 at the time and never complained of feeling ill. Barry’s Heartbeat launched on 26 November 2016 at our Christmas Fair with the aim of making people aware of high blood pressure and encouraging them to get their blood pressure checked. At the same time we aim to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation through a series of events. Our total raised this year is: £765.93. NEXT EVENT: ‘New Year New You’ Ladies Pamper & Shopping Evening To be held at the Austin Hall, Main Street, Yaxley, PE7 3LU on Friday 27 January 2017 doors open at 6.30pm for pre-booking. Are you looking to kick start your year with a new regime then come and join us for an evening of pampering and indulgence. Enjoy a glass of Prosecco or a soft drink and partake of the treatments on offer which include nail painting, massages, reflexology, manicures, pedicures and facials.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Looking for something new to do in 2017? Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for volunteers in your area to join our successful Community Champion scheme. Community Champions encourage local residents to carry out fire safety checks in their homes, visit community groups and educate about fire safety and escape plans. We will train you, give you a uniform and provide you with a wide range of activities to choose from, all of which will help to keep our communities safe from the risk of fire. No previous qualifications or specific skills are needed to become a Community Champion

as CFRS is always seeking people from diverse backgrounds. The scheme is run by the charity Groundwork on behalf of CFRS. Broadway Bowls Well the green has been put to bed, with a blanket of winter dressing and the leaf clearing and other jobs are mostly completed. This year one major renovation was fixing the suspended walkway around the green; some of the woodwork holding it up was starting to rot away making the paving insecure and potentially dangerous. The committee continue to look into getting a permanent electricity connection to the club house, we currently run off a generator, but this isn’t any good for our automatic watering system, or to keep the chill out of the club-house during the extreme cold spells we get in the winter. Cecil Bradshaw was a member of both Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Club and Yaxley outdoor club and in his honour we play a ‘friendly’ game home and away each year, club against club. Yaxley have been on top in the past few years, but at Whittlesey this winter, they went down to a very competitive Whittlesey indoor team. Lets hope we can win the trophy back in the summer. Throughout the winter, members keep in touch through the activities of our fund-raising committee who put on Race Nights, Quizzes, Beetle Drives and a Xmas bazaar etc. Our first event of the New Year will be a Whist drive, open to all, so please come and join us: Saturday 14 January -7pm for a prompt 7:30pm start. Your £3 entry fee will also include tea and biscuits and of course a raffle The picture is taken at the league presentation night, showing the spoils of a winning season for our Yaxley teams with all their trophies.

Protecting older or more vulnerable residents in Yaxley, Farcet and Stilton Did you know that there are a number of No Cold Calling Zones (NCCZ) in your area? These include Andrew’s Close in Farcet, Oak Court in Yaxley and Church Close in Stilton. These zones were set up to discourage cold callers and to give residents the confidence to say ‘no’ to uninvited sales people – helping to prevent people falling victim to distraction burglars and rogue traders. Whilst the zones were originally introduced by Cambridgeshire Trading Standards, it is recognised that community-led action is much more effective in

protecting local people from unscrupulous tradespeople. Indeed, the best prevention and support for residents comes from within their own community. We can offer a range of materials for your residents including door stickers, advice on how to spot a rogue trader and tips to prevent unwanted mail and phone calls. We invite a local coordinator to disseminate this information and look

after a NCCZ on behalf of its residents. This would preferably be someone living within the zone but could also be someone residing close by. Could that be you? If you feel you can help, even if your time and ability is limited, we would love to hear from you. A NCCZ can really be reinvigorated with a little community action; just a good neighbour keeping an eye out makes all the difference.

Make learning your new year goal!

A

re you stuck in a rut with your own development? Do you need a push in the right direction or simply some motivation to kick start the changes you want to make in your life? The start of the new year is a time for reflection and resolution. Many people focus on fitness or wellbeing goals, such as losing weight or quitting smoking, but how many of us consider improving our personal skills and getting our mind as fit as our body? Often, with the busy lives we lead, improving our skills can be pushed to the bottom of the list; we might

start off with the best intentions and make a good start but lose the momentum we need to fulfil our goals, leaving us feeling like a failure and unlikely to try again. Hundreds of studies demonstrate the links between goal setting and motivation and furthermore goal setting and the successful achievement of those goals (Latham & Locke 2007). Despite the research, so few of us set written goals, or we use the excuse “I know what I want to do, I just keep it all in my head” or “I will get round to that one day”.

LEGAL

Keeping your divorce stress free and simple If you have decided your marriage is over you will most probably want to make the whole process of divorce as painless as possible. So what is the secret? 1. Firstly, take advice and support from your friends and family but also seek professional advice from a family lawyer committed to resolving disputes in a nonconfrontational way. 2. Listen to the professional advice given to you and try to act upon it. Always negotiate before you litigate. Compromise is the essence of any agreement. 3. You may have been thinking about a divorce for years whereas your partner may only have received the news a matter of weeks ago. You might have to slow down for a while, be patient, and wait until they are ready to discuss matters. 4. Inevitably there will be disagreements with your spouse but try to keep emotions under control and avoid verbal abuse and threats. This will simply lead to them becoming difficult and inflexible. You do not want a war. 5. Try to avoid involving the children or using them as a pawn.

They are innocent in this situation and they will need the love and support of both parents. 6. Consider all the options available to resolve matters, such as solicitor negotiation, mediation and only consider court proceedings as a last resort. A Resolution committed lawyer will explore the best option with you, suited to your individual case. Whilst getting a divorce is clearly not an ideal situation it does not have to be a time consuming, stressful, unpleasant money pit. Sensible advice coupled with sensible people can help to ensure the experience is as painless and cost effective as possible but more importantly that you and your children can move forward with your lives in the best possible way. As a Resolution accredited lawyer and a qualified family mediation I can assist you in trying to deal with this difficult transition as painlessly as possible.

Yaxley WI Our November speaker was Derek Harris who spoke most enthusiastically about canals and the people who live and work on them. His stories were interspersed with songs (one of which was censored so as not to offend our delicate ears!) and we were able to join in with some of them. He also greatly improved our singing of Jerusalem at the start of the evening! Derek is dedicated to the preservation of canals and, in particular, Foxton Locks which is well worth a visit. I hope all members past and present enjoyed a good Christmas and I wish a happy new year to you all. The speaker for our meeting at 7.30pm on 12 January will be Emma Sanders of MAGPAS. This will be held at the Lancaster Club, Main Street.

A very Happy New Year to all!

Just before I wrote this it was announced that Andrew Sachs had died. He is best known for playing Manuel in the 1970s sitcom Fawlty Towers. As a memorial BBC 1 screened an episode (the one with Mrs Richards and her lost cash). Watching this episode I was struck by two things. Firstly, the number of lines from this episode which I regularly quote in response to situations around the home! Secondly, this programme does not seem to have dated much. I appreciate that the scenery is dated, but not the humour which I think is timeless. I’m very well aware that the humour of Fawlty Towers does not appeal to everyone. However, the programme’s success must lie at least partly in the fact that we can all see people we know in the various

characters, albeit their personality traits are exaggerated for comic effect. There is great truth behind the timeless humour. As we start 2017 none of us knows what will happen during the year. However, my prayer for us all is that we would know the great truth of how much we are loved by Jesus Christ whose birthday we celebrated not so long ago. Jesus may have been born over 2,000 years ago, but the message heralded by the angels to the shepherds is timeless: “We bring you tidings of great joy”, they proclaimed. Not only is their message timeless, but the great truth is that it is also for the whole world, young and old, poor and rich. May this timeless truth be an inspiration and an encouragement to you throughout 2017 and beyond. With my prayers for you all for 2017.

If you would like to start this new year by finding out more about God’s love for you please do come along and join us at St Peter’s or the church in the community where you live. You are all welcome at any of our services. For details of St Peter’s services see www.saintpeters.co.uk Vicar: Jon Randall T: 01733 240339 E: vicar@saintpeters.co.uk www.saintpeters.co.uk

Fourfields

Google came to visit Fourfields in November. The fantastic Google Expeditions team led each Key Stage 2 class through an incredible virtual reality experience. Through the use of Google Cardboard the children visited locations ranging from the Grand Canyon to outer space! It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and a valuable learning opportunity. December sees the advent of the Christmas plays. Reception and Key Stage 1 classes are busy preparing for the performance of the year. Friends of Fourfields also hosted their annual Christmas Fayre and were able to raise a fantastic amount of money to help the school. The enjoyable event for all the family saw the most successful

Christmas Fayre yet! The staff of the school even got involved in the fun with a Christmas music video (with some questionable dance moves). More sporting success for the Fourfields children came this month in the form of girls and boys football. The boys saw wins against St Michael’s Primary and Orton Wistow. The girls team were also in action and won their first tournament of the year without even conceding a goal. The local A1 quiz event occurred in early November. The Fourfields year 6 team performed brilliantly to come second in the tournament (by only half a point!). A massive thank you to Folksworth School for arranging this brilliant event every year.

Yaxley Infant School We zoomed into 2017 with and exciting trip to the Space Centre in Leicester and a mysterious alien visitation. This has led us to be space explorers for our Spring Term Topic of ‘To Infinity and Beyond’. Look out for more information about our exciting discoveries in the next edition. It was lovely to see lots of potential new parents in November when we held our school tours week. We hope you enjoyed looking around our friendly school and seeing all

the children busy playing and learning. Thank you for your compliments about the nurturing and caring ethos you observed and the outstanding behaviour of the children. If you didn’t manage to make the tours week and would like to visit us please call the school office on 01733 240918.

The children have enjoyed a great build up to Christmas at Pre-school. From decorating the tree in the Village Hall to creating letters for Santa, activities which have encouraged their fine motor skills through cutting, mark making, handling small items, etc. It was very funny seeing our parents faces when they checked the Santa lists ... we think there may have been some panic buying afterwards! We also had lots of fun with our Christmas performance for parents and carers and our Christmas party for all our families old and new. The children have particularly enjoyed learning all the Christmas songs, this

helps them extend their language, it also supports counting e.g. 10 little angels, 5 jolly snowmen whilst taking turns with actions and words. We are also lucky at the Preschool when the weather gets really bad that we can utilise the main hall so, we have set up our large indoor space with gym equipment, tunnels, climbing apparatus ensuring the children don’t miss out moving about every day. We will be adapting this in the coming weeks should the New Year weather not be kind to us. For further information please seeholmevillagepre-school.co.uk or our Facebook page.

William de Yaxley

The Christmas celebrations at the William de Yaxley Academy kept us all busy through December. The children donated 61 shoeboxes for the Samaritans Operation Christmas child shoebox appeal; we all looked very festive as we took part in the Save the Children Christmas Jumper Appeal; and our fabulous Christmas tree, kindly donated by Dobbies, provided the focal point for our Christmas Fayre, with the choir singing beautifully to deliver the entertainment. The excitement of the Hot Chocolate and Pyjama Christmas Film Night and Christmas Discos were followed by the calm of our Year 3 Nativity service and Christingle Service, both held at St Peters church. Thank you to the worship council for making our Christingles this year and for Church

Warden Paul Russell, who we could not perform without. After such a great December we are looking forward to starting the New Year, with all the exciting events the children have to look forward to: Year 3 will be visiting Flag Fen, aspart of their Stone Age and Bronze Age Topic work; Year 4 will be finding out what life was like in Roman Britain, while Year 5 will be invading our school as Vikings! Year 6 will be learning about Parliament and the Suffragette movement in preparation for their three day residential in London. We look forward to sharing the children’s experiences with you. May we take this opportunity for the children and staff of the William de Yaxley Academy to wish you all a happy New Year.

Happy New Year! Christmas is no more than a fleeting memory lost in a blizzard of wrapping paper and eating far too much cheese. Goodbye 2016 and hello to a month and half of writing sixteen instead of seventeen every time I write down the date.

B

ut enough of me and my first world problems ... to business! There’s something very important that I need to discuss with you this month, something that stokes the flames of rage in me like no other. No it’s not the inexplicable return of Rick Astley, it’s worse. Is there anything more annoying than pulling up to busy car park, spotting an empty space, only to be thwarted by the fact that it is not empty, because someone in a

knackered Corsa has parked over two spaces. We know why they’re doing it; its because they are so concerned that someone might accidentally hit their car with their door that they need to leave room on both sides just in case. I could understand that if it were a Ferrari and you’d pulled up at Activity World or Bertie Billings’ Restaurant for the Chronically Clumsy, but it isn’t. Invariably, it’s a skip on wheels - a Fiesta, or a Corsa, or a Golf - so

old that its probably a member at an actual golf club, and always, ALWAYS, with a ridiculous exhaust that looks like they’ve run over a bin! It’s one of those things that makes me instantly furious. I can’t see it without immediately wishing that the car was on fire, and one day I will master telekinesis to the extent that every cack-mobile driving yob will fear me. Today however, I will just have to be furious.

There is only one thing worse – the BMW that occasionally parks behind the shops in the middle of four spaces to make sure nothing goes near them. Oh, never have I wished for a microlight to spontaneously fall from the sky as much as the day I saw that. I wanted a sinkhole to bubble up and plunge it down to the depths of the Earth. I wanted Jedward to smash their way in to the back seat and claim squatters rights. Whoever it is, know this ... I really don’t like you!

History Yaxley 1967-2017 by Stewart Howe

“History repeats itself. Historians repeat each other” is a great quote by the travel writer Philip Guedalla. A case in point is this month’s feature, which draws upon a treasure trove of information from our archives and the inquisitive mind of a Yaxley resident some fifty years ago.

B

etween April 1966 and February 1967 Ronald Moore penned a ‘Geographical Study of Yaxley in Huntingdonshire’, which provides a fascinating snapshot of the village half a century ago. It was in 1967 that my parents first moved to the village and the changes that have taken place since are quite remarkable -Yaxley’s population has quadrupled, the brick industry has gone and massive development has fundamentally altered the character of the parish. Over the next few months we will delve into the study to sketch a picture of a very different village in a very different time.

Part I: Industry and Agriculture

For those who are not familiar with the village sign of Yaxley, amongst the motifs incorporated into the design are three sheaves of corn and three chimneys. These elements symbolise the importance of both agriculture and the brickmaking industry to the history of the village. Back in 1967, this was very much evident in the studyBrickmaking was the most important industry in the Yaxley area. Geology determined the location of the brickyards and the abundance and accessibility

of Oxford Clay on the Fen Edge brought the industry to Yaxley and Norman Cross, with most of the local yards owned and operated by the London Brick Company. By 1967 brick sales had reached a peak and the London Brick Company began to look at diversification, forming the London Brick Landfill, which would eventually merge with the Shanks Group. Their plan was to fill the disused knotholes with bulky waste and fly ash from coal-fired electricity generating stations. The pressurised materials, brought in by train were covered with soil from the Peterborough Sugar Factory to allow landscape architects to create gradients to make the land usable. Controversies around subsidence aside, residents of Hampton benefited from this technology, with residential and retail estates constructed on the sites of the old bricks pits. Today even after they have fallen, the shadows flung by the chimneys and brick making industry still loom large. Shifting focus from the Oxford clay to the peat soil, we arrive at Manor Farm, once the manorial seat of the Earl of Carysfort. Today the farmhouse is an attractive residential property, but half a century ago it was the headquarters

of a working farm, owned by the London Brick Company and managed by Ralph Pinder. Mr Pinder oversaw 700 acres of land, split into four areas, two of which were in the parish. Crops included barley and oats with land set aside for grazing. It is interesting at a time when anti-social behaviour is considered a big local problem that Mr. Pinder’s chief complaints included vandalism and fly tipping by residents of new estates within the village. Meanwhile Pretoria Farm, owned by the Crown Brick Company, was managed by a Mr. Poppel. He ran the farm with his son and their agricultural equipment included a combine harvester, two balers and three tractors. Yaxley was also home to the Pea Research Station, which was the only facility of its kind in the British Isles. PGRO was a facility dedicated to the research of canning methods and the packaging, processing, freezing and rehydrating of peas and beans. Seeds samples from the station were sent all over the world and Mr. Baine and Mr. King, who were in charge of the station were recognised experts in their field, offering consultation to the industry. Russell Burgess Ltd specialised in the packaging of potatoes and

carrots, employing upwards of twenty staff, mainly from local villages. Next door on the B1091 was Newman’s Heavy Haulage Co Ltd, running a fleet of twenty to twenty-five lorries. In 1967 Yaxley was home to three businesses operating in the mushroom industry: White Queen (a spawning plant), Noble’s Mushrooms and Snowcap Mushrooms. The soil acidity/ alkalinity and proximity of the railway (the station closed in 1958) made the village an ideal location for the mushroom companies although by 1967 local peat had been replaced by manure for the growing process. Clarke and Sons Ltd, which would eventually become Clark Drain Ltd, was a family-run business making ornamental wrought iron gates. They were based at the site of the old Yaxley and Farcet Railway Station and their products were displayed and sold at Mr. Clarke’s shop in the village. Beerite Boxes was founded in 1947 and produced tomato crates, potato boxes and industrial crates and cases for Perkins Diesel and Peter Brotherhood. They also manufactured sheds, garages and conservatories. Next month: Part II: Commerce

S

tanding at the door to 2017 - a year that may hold famine, feast or flood, or drought, disease or disaster - we can employ the best minds to guestimate weather, or market prices, or the likelihood of disease with some accuracy for the next few days only. Beyond Twelfth Night (the fifth of January), we’re flying blind. That’s why Brian Brett’s quote “Farming is a profession of hope”, is almost perfect. You see, the seeds that we saved our money to buy are now under the ground at risk of being eaten by slugs or drowned in waterlogged soils, the lambs that were born in the spring are out in the fields with the chances of illness (or sadly, and increasingly, dog attacks), and the final remnants of last year’s harvest are in the store shed where (with market prices moving) they may be worth less when we wake tomorrow than they are today.

FARMING

“Farming is a profession of hope” Brian Brett

BUT (and it does deserve capitalization) they’re all in the very best place they can be. And they were put there by a farmer - full of hope, and care. That’s the key, because as farmers, we can protect the seed using the latest technology and expert knowledge, we can support the lamb using years of accumulated wisdom and care, and we can make agreements to sell the right produce at the very best time to our customers. We’re ‘hope-full’ but not ‘help-less’. And did you know, dear reader, that you are the most powerful person in agriculture today? As a consumer, I’d implore you to be hopeful for 2017, and less helpless. Be hopeful, as I am, for ever-increasing standards of production and welfare in world farming, be hopeful for further integration of low-environmentalimpact farming practice into the mainstream, and be hopeful that we can better serve our nation’s

need for food whilst protecting the amazing natural world around us, but don’t, whatever you do, be so helpless as to think that a decision today doesn’t affect the welfare of our countryside, and the future of the farmer custodians of the world around us. Where I buy my milk from, whether or not I buy assured British Farm Standard (Red Tractor) assured meat, if I look to buy free range eggs, line-caught fish, local and seasonal vegetables etc may well be (outside government elections or whether to have one last drink) the most important decisions we make. My resolutions for 2017 are to continue to buy local, buy seasonal, buy British, and buy best quality wherever I can, and to spread the word. There’s lots more on social media, and lots in store for Farmer Tom in 2017, but for now, I’d like to wish you, and you loved ones a very happy and healthy 2017.

ONLINE when searching for a January bargain

B

ut while many of us rejoice in a post-Christmas spending spree, so do the online fraudsters and fake traders. A country-wide campaign run by Action Fraud has been warning people of the dangers of online shopping fraud throughout the festive period, as well as all types of fraud which people fall victim to during the season of spending. New figures released in December show that last year, victims reported losing over £10 million to fraudsters when shopping online for Christmas presents. The largest loss was one

by Eileen Le Voi

As a nation of bargain hunters, we love nothing more than the satisfaction of snapping up a juicy January deal – from cut price clothing to low cost luxuries.

victim who lost £86,000 when he tried to purchase a boat from a fraudster on Ebay. The advice is also very relevant to the January sales, and here are some tips on how to avoid getting caught out by the New Year misery makers. One of the worst offenders are the counterfeiters. Counterfeit goods range from clothes, bags, watches, perfume, cosmetics and electrical items as well as pirate DVDs, CDs, computer software and games. However, more and more people are now prepared to

knowingly buy fake items as gifts, but there are serious risks involved with counterfeit goods. Fake goods are often bad quality and in most cases unsafe. Counterfeit electrical goods are not put through the same vigorous safety checks and fake cosmetics and fragrances have been found to contain toxic levels of chemicals and unpleasant substances. Our advice, as well as that of the police and Action Fraud, is don’t rush into spending your cash on what looks like it is a great offer. Take a few minutes to check and research what you are buying and

where/who you are buying it from. If the deal looks too good to be true, the chances are it probably is. And be vigilant when it comes to snapping up offers and deals which appear on your social media channels - as research shows that these are popular and preferred platforms for the fraudsters to target victims. PETS

Winter warnings!

S

It’s true to say that there are hazards for our pets at all times of the year, whether they be seasonal hazards like grass seeds in the summer or everyday substances that are poisonous to our pets such as rat poison or lilies. But winter, it seems, does have more potential perils than any other season.

early signs of poisoning resemble drunkenness – uncoordinated wobbly movement, nausea, vomiting etc. Ensure you thoroughly wash down spillages, keep lids on securely, store bottles out of reach of our pets and take them to the Vet immediately if you think they may have ingested any antifreeze.

adly, every winter Vets all over the country need to treat pets with poisonings, injuries and gut blockages many of which are preventable given the right precautions. Last month we went through our Top 5 Christmas Cautions. This month we talk about other warnings for this time of year

Fireguards & candles Injury, increased fire risk

Antifreeze poison Antifreeze is extremely toxic to our pets but they seem to be attracted to drink it, picking it up from contaminated puddles, the bottles themselves or cleaning it off their fur after walking through a spillage. The active, yet poisonous, ingredient is ethylene glycol. As it’s an alcohol,

Please keep your pet safe around naked flames and watch those waggy tails! Salt & grit Irritant Although it’s great for grip on the icy paths and roads, it can irritate the skin on our pet’s feet and make them quite sore. Brush down or even rinse their feet after a walk.

Routine – exercise and treatments Health & wellbeing Now we know it might be colder out there but our pets still need their exercise - make sure you continue walks and play time. Also remember to continue with parasite control (worm and flea treatment) because thanks to the wonders of central heating they don’t go away over the winter! Outside pets Health & wellbeing Any pets who live outside will need some additional attention over the colder months – they need more bedding and extra food (they use more energy) to help keep themselves warm. Remember to check on them regularly too!

For more information, please speak to Cromwell Vets or call 01487 800199. As always and throughout the festive season, our Veterinary team are available 24/7 at our Huntingdon Hospital. 24hr Emergency Service: 01480 52222

Station Bridge OPEN NOW Veterinary Surgery The communities of Yaxley, Farcet & surrounding areas have a new vet. Station Bridge Veterinary Surgery is now open.

O

n Saturday 28 January they will be open for the public to take a behind-the-scenes look around the practice. Edward and Emma Jones, married with two young children, had always planned to open a small animal veterinary surgery that could provide a caring and supportive service with a homely atmosphere for pets and their owners. “We wanted to create a welcoming and informal reception and a waiting room with overtones of a living room, whilst still adhering to all clinical requirements,” said Emma. “Cats prefer to be off the floor so we have provided table-top space for cat baskets in a dedicated cat-waiting area.” Edward, an experienced Veterinary Surgeon, graduated from Cambridge University and initially worked with both large and small

animals in Lincolnshire and North Yorkshire before moving South to concentrate on being a pet vet – and to marry Emma. “Having worked at various surgeries the length and breadth of the country I felt that I could offer an excellent standard of care to pets and their owners and wanted to strike out on my own,” said Edward. “Yaxley, Farcet and surrounding areas will benefit from a practice that will listen to their needs and provide a service tailored to them. That is one of the reasons why we will offer appointments seven days a week so that pet owners can book an appointment at a time that suits them.” Sarah, a first-rate Registered Veterinary Nurse with six years experience, has joined Edward and Emma. Sarah has a particular interest in anaesthesia, canine and

Paws for thought feline life stages and behaviour. The Station Bridge team all feel that getting your pet used to going to the vet helps when they really do need to go. “Feel free to pop in for a chat and look round if you are going for a walk,” says Emma. Station Bridge Veterinary Surgery is full of fresh ideas including their own Health Plan, which provides instant savings to clients for their routine procedures as well as discounts on many other purchases. Additionally, if you have a new kitten or puppy, Station Bridge Veterinary Surgery will provide FREE first vaccinations, a discounted neutering, and a half price microchip if you sign up to one of their health plans.

Arabellaz

Rochelle Owen, massage therapist at Arabellaz, started her training at Stamford College and went on to do a degree in holistic therapy at Huddersfield University.

T

o say that Rochelle is a specialist in massage therapy is an understatement. She has been working for ten years as a therapist and her intensive training has seen her rise to the top of her game and as such, there is a high demand for her services. Rochelle prides herself on her attention to detail and tailors all treatments to each customer’s

personal needs. She always starts with a consultation to discover what her customers require and monitors results after each appointment to see the progress of any injury or illness that the customer has. She offers a whole host of holistic therapies including reflexology, Indian head massage, full body Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, Hopi ear candles, hot stone therapy and

aromatherapy. And it’s not just women to flock to Rochelle to be treated either… she has many male customers too. For men, she offers deep, strong massage and sports massage, which really do feel like you’ve just had a work out! Her customers include boxers and footballers and she is an expert at ridding the tissue of ‘knots’, which can cause much pain and tension within the body.

Rochelle also specialises in abdominal massage, which is increasing in popularity and primarily relieves the discomfort of constipation and bowel disorders whilst aiding digestion. During each consultation, Rochelle takes time to understand her clients and take into consideration hair colour and skin type before prescribing the perfect holistic therapy for each individual.
